Thousands Of Americans See Their Health Plans Canceled

Health plans are sending hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters to people who buy their own coverage, frustrating some consumers who want to keep what they have and forcing others to buy more costly policies.
The main reason insurers offer is that the policies fall short of what the Affordable Care Act requires starting Jan. 1. Most are ending policies sold after the law passed in March 2010. At least a few are cancelling plans sold to people with pre-existing medical conditions.
By all accounts, the new policies will offer consumers better coverage, in some cases, for comparable cost -- especially after the inclusion of federal subsidies for those who qualify. The law requires policies sold in the individual market to cover 10 “essential” benefits, such as prescription drugs, mental health treatment and maternity care. In addition, insurers cannot reject people with medical problems or charge them higher prices. The policies must also cap consumers’ annual expenses at levels lower than many plans sold before the new rules.
But the cancellation notices, which began arriving in August, have shocked many consumers in light of President Barack Obama’s promise that people could keep their plans if they liked them.
“I don’t feel like I need to change, but I have to,” said Jeff Learned, a television editor in Los Angeles, who must find a new plan for his teenage daughter, who has a health condition that has required multiple surgeries.
An estimated 14 million people purchase their own coverage because they don’t get it through their jobs. Calls to insurers in several states showed that many have sent notices.
Florida Blue, for example, is terminating about 300,000 policies, about 80 percent of its individual policies in the state. Kaiser Permanente in California has sent notices to 160,000 people – about half of its individual business in the state. Insurer Highmark in Pittsburgh is dropping about 20 percent of its individual market customers, while Independence Blue Cross, the major insurer in Philadelphia, is dropping about 45 percent.
Some Policies Targeted
Both Independence and Highmark are cancelling so-called “guaranteed issue” policies, which had been sold to customers who had pre-existing medical conditions when they signed up. Policyholders with regular policies because they did not have health problems will be given an option to extend their coverage through next year.
Consumer advocates say such cancellations raise concerns that companies may be targeting their most costly enrollees.
They may be “doing this as an opportunity to push their populations into the exchange and purge their systems” of policyholders they no longer want, said Jerry Flanagan, an attorney with the advocacy group Consumer Watchdog in California.
Insurers deny that, saying they are encouraging existing customers to re-enroll in their new plans.
“We continue to cover people with all types of health conditions,” said Highmark spokeswoman Kristin Ash.
She said some policyholders who may have faced limited coverage for their medical conditions will get new plans with “richer benefits” and the policies “in most cases, will be at a lower rate.”
Paula Sunshine, vice president of marketing with Independence, said the insurer hopes the cancelled policyholders will “choose Blue when they decide on a new plan.”
Higher Costs?
Some receiving cancellations say it looks like their costs will go up, despite studies projecting that about half of all enrollees will get income-based subsidies.
Kris Malean, 56, lives outside Seattle, and has a health policy that costs $390 a month with a $2,500 deductible and a $10,000 in potential out-of-pocket costs for such things as doctor visits, drug costs or hospital care.
As a replacement, Regence BlueShield is offering her a plan for $79 more a month with a deductible twice as large as what she pays now, but which limits her potential out-of-pocket costs to $6,250 a year, including the deductible.
“My impression was …there would be a lot more choice, driving some of the rates down,” said Malean, who does not believe she is eligible for a subsidy.
Regence spokeswoman Rachelle Cunningham said the new plans offer consumers broader benefits, which “in many cases translate into higher costs.”
“The arithmetic is inescapable,” said Patrick Johnston, chief executive officer of the California Association of Health Plans. Costs must be spread, so while some consumers will see their premiums drop, others will pay more -- “no matter what people in Washington say.”
Health insurance experts say new prices will vary and much depends on where a person lives, their age and the type of policy they decide to buy. Some, including young people and those with skimpy or high-deductible plans, may see an increase. Others, including those with health problems or who buy coverage with higher deductibles than they have now, may see lower premiums.
Blue Shield of California sent roughly 119,000 cancellation notices out in mid-September, about 60 percent of its individual business. About two-thirds of those policyholders will see rate increases in their new policies, said spokesman Steve Shivinsky.
Like other insurers, the Blue Shield letters let customers know they have to make a decision by Dec. 31 or they will automatically be enrolled in a recommended plan.
“There is going to be a certain amount of churn in the marketplace as people have to make their decisions,” Shivinsky said.

Inside, on page #1 is a section titled "Affordable Care Act Transition Reinsurance Fee". This section describes a "fee" all employees will pay each paycheck (bimonthly).
Here is the full text from this section;
The Affordable Care Act transition reinsurance fee is payable to the Department of Health and Human Services. This new fee will apply to all employees and their dependents who will be enrolled in medical coverage. The fees are:
Employee-only coverage: $2.30/paycheck
Employee+Spouse/domestic partner coverage: $4.60/paycheck
Employee+child(ren) coverage: $6.24/paycheck
Employee+family coverage: $9.43/paycheck
What this says is that as an employee - you are going to be charged a "fee" every paycheck, paid to HHS.... and there are NO limits on exactly how long this "fee" is going to be taken out of your check!! From all appearances (and what I can discern in the ACA) this "fee" will exist for as long as you are employed - and I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg - as eventually people are going to start looking at their paycheck stubs and questioning why there are so many additional taxes coming out of their check they have never seen before.....
Bottom line:
If there are 100 million single people employed in the US (I just pulled a number out of the air) that means that if we take the "Employee only" "fee" of $2.30/paycheck, multiply it by 100 million people - the federal government is raking in $460 million dollars a month! ON THIS "FEE" ALONE!!!!!
If you make that 100 million "Employee+family" coverage the federal government is raking in $1.886 TRILLION dollars a month!!!
Now do you understand why the democrats find obamacare non-negotiable?

When Christians Destroy Marriages And Families
Not everyone who call's him or herself is a real Christian. This couldn't be more clear and evident than what we see in how people who call themselves by the name of Christ in relation to one-another in terms of marital relationships and family matters these days. As a former Chemical Dependency Counselor and Family Counselor/Mediator, I have seen more than I wish to remember, the number of Christians and so called “Christian Pastors” aiding in destroying, and not helping marriages or families in crisis. Unfortunately, many so called Christians and Pastors these days have left the wisdom of the Bible and now propagate such man-made ideas such as psychology or relying on “feelings.” Rather than the Word of God being the instrument of wisdom on such matters, sadly many are instead running to read and learn from James Dobson or Mark Driscoll books instead.
With the rise of Feminism over the last 40 years, the Spirit of Jezebel has sadly not only worked it's way into the hierarchy of our Government and courts, it has also wormed it's way into our educational institutions, schools and even into many American churches as well. I remember some years ago meeting a man who was a radio program and television host who proudly touted to me and a few others how his wife was a “Pro-Life Feminist.” My reply to him directly, (while editing his program) was that what he was sharing with myself and everyone else in the room regarding his wife's beliefs could be compared to “jumbo-shrimp, an oxymoron.” As you can quite imagine, he was not too pleased with what I told him but he was not a Christian, but he was to some degree, very religious. I went on to explain to him the facts surrounding rebellious attitudes of Feminism, Machoism and gave him some Bible Scriptures to back it all up. What occurred after that, was he became so incensed about what the Bible declared, I never seen him again. He chose like so many involved in “religion” and “feelings” to become irate over Biblical truth rather than accept it's wisdom. Feminism and Machosim(“love 'em and leave 'em) attitudes and ideologies belong to the devil and have no place in a Christian's heart nor a church.
That's the main problem with many so called “Christians”, they are not abiding by the Bible but instead, are following some sort of religion which may have a claim to Christianity or appearance on the surface of Christianity, but in reality is far from what the Bible plainly teaches. Specifically in regards to marriage and family, as I shared earlier, most Christians destroy God's design for marriages and families much more than help them. I believe some of the largest and visible evidence of what I am sharing here is that of divorce. What does Jesus plainly say in the Bible regarding divorce ? Well, Jesus spoke of only one reason to divorce(if the offended chooses to do so), and that is for adultery(Matt 19:9). I have heard so many so called Christians and Pastors advocate for divorce for a multitude of reasons over the years calling it “a form of adultery”(marital infidelity) justifying a divorce, but these Christians and Pastors are doing great harm and doing the devils work instead. There is no “out” of a marriage in the Christian Bible for domestic violence, arguing, rebelliousness and so on. I know some of you are saying “Oh ! pastor you are sooooooo wrong, you have no idea what she/he did to me !!!! ” I can tell you that I have been greatly abused, both physically and verbally. I could have divorced and could have found plenty of so called “Christians” and “Pastors” to enable me to do so, but I didn't. I can tell you also that in the Bible, it does mention regarding “separating for a season” but most have no real Biblical venue to get their marriages repaired while “separated” for the purpose of healing. Real Pastors with Biblical authority know exactly how to stop a man/woman engaged in terrorizing their spouse but sadly, they love their IRS 501c3 tax Exempt Status more. Often times, so called Pastors these days only end-up choosing sides or give up and let the marriage get destroyed. Thus, even if one party in a marriage wishes not to be divorced, they get dragged before the corrupted Government and attorneys anyway, thus the devil wins again and the marriage and family destroyed.
Pastors these days do not hold folks that attend their churches accountable for their actions. Sadly, most Pastors in churches these days are more concerned about their pay, their parking spot or getting their Starbucks Coffee then they are about following the Word of God. Marriages and families suffer greatly and teachings such as what is written in Titus Chapter 2 regarding teaching/following family values/roles are totally ignored. The void of good Biblical Pastors in our nation has led to more Mark Driscoll's out there who put beds next to pulpits and teach openly and inappropriately about sexual matters to their congregations. The lack of sound Biblical teaching in most churches in America has allowed men and women to divorce and remarry over and over again with little to no real accountability at the local church level. I hardly know anyone alive in America who has been married just one time in their life time(I'm not speaking of a spouse dying and remarriage). The vast majority of American adults these days are either divorced, divorced/remarried or cohabitating. None of these fore mentioned interpersonal type relationships are Biblical. Divorce and or Biblical separation should be rare. But they are not. This is not only a problem, the negative consequences of such is playing it's self out in the nightly news everyday.
So, the churches, Pastors and Christians are involved in unbiblical actions regarding marriages and families. The best you can get and hope from many of them to “help” is either a “Divorce Recovery Workshop” or a “Men's or Women's Bible Study Group.” Neither of these are very helpful other than possibly being a good place to vent. Other than that, they are useless. The fruit of Pastors and Christians involving themselves in wicked things such as divorce for unbiblical matters, has allowed an increasing amount of children alienated from their parents and an increasing amount of men(who have little to no social support) who are killing themselves and or others http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2441911/Father-distraught-access-son-killed-eating-poisonous-leaves-berries.html. The blame for all this is squarely blamed on Christians and their Pastors who ignore the Bible and marriages as well as families in crisis. As Child protective Services, corrupted family courts, lawyers, domestic violence programs and cops increase their illegal activities in stealing children from good parents all to make cash(Federal Title IV Funding). It is only Christians and their pastors that can be blamed for ignoring these same marriages and families being purposely destroyed. Equally sharing in the evil, I have been finding more and more so called Christian “Attorneys” who are just as much to blame for the failure of these same marriages and families. Perhaps there is a special place in hell for those so called “Christian lawyers” who screw people out of a lot of money, refuse to help and in the end, the troubled marriage end up divorced, lose their children or in end-up in the “poor house” anyway. Someone must call “foul”, and I'm calling out so called “Christians”, “Christian Pastors” and “Christian Lawyers.”
The bottom line here is this; if you dare, yes...that is dare to call yourself a “Christian” or even more so, a “Christian Pastor”, your job, your command, your Biblical responsibility is to help heal, help teach, help enforce Biblical teachings, not to do as you “feel.” Stop feeding the devil and go help a marriage and or family in need today !

Last night i had a dream
In the dream i was floating above the earth and watching as thousands of Demons were coming from everywhere 2nd heaven to the earth
at the same time was given to me a word a story and a song that i will post

The Story was a story in the Bible where a servant of the the profit Elisha went out to spy out and evading army and the servant became afraid because the evading army was great .

Once you have that kind of control and you find a problem, you give them a written prescription, and they have 48 hours to fix it. Now you’ve taken back the whole system, and the New World Order crumbles. If we can do this in 26+ states, the whole New World Order crumbles. It’s a very simple thing. People look at this through complexity and are trained to fight every battle when all you have to do is win the courts to take the entire country back.
We have been studying law for about four years, looking at common law and trying to figure it out. Over time, we did figure it out and found some great people to learn from. We heard about the grand jury about two years ago, and we knew it was something we wanted to get involved in. We needed to learn common law and processes of the court procedures, and we were working on all of those things. At the beginning of June of this year, someone sent me a copy of United States v. Williams, which I had seen but never read. They said, “John, you have to read this.” So I looked at it and read it, and I called a few people up and they read it, and we decided we needed to change gears from “committeemen” to “grand jury.” By July 18, the first grand jury was elected here in New York in my county, and now we have 17 grand juries elected in New York, and hopefully within the next 60 days, maybe 90 at the most, we’ll have a grand jury in every county here in New York.
We have 47 states that have come on board with us. We are doing our meetings online, and some people had come in and were interested, and they wanted to copy what we were doing. So we were sharing information, and we ended up going national. We went from NewYorkCommitteemen.org to NationalLibertyAlliance.org in July, and we kept building state after state until we had 47 states on board. Some states will probably beat New York as far as getting their counties involved throughout the entire state. We have Florida, Utah, California, Ohio, Pennsylvania – just a lot of states across the board – and Washington is starting to move now.
We had the prerequisitional requirements of understanding how things worked before we found United States v. Williams. If we had found it two years ago, we probably would be making the same mistakes everybody else has made. So we were blessed to have the knowledge so that we would have the right tools to use. We have other people around us with good knowledge. We did all of this without a plan; it’s just something that happened.
Even though we’ve accomplished a lot, our accomplishments were speedy and unplanned. Every time we’d try to make a plan, we’d find ourselves going in different directions. We’re finding the right thing at the right time. Numerous times, we tried to get word out to the media, and we realized, “Well, we didn’t want you anyway.” We did interviews on radio; we talked with small groups, networking, but we didn’t want to talk to the major news networks.
Now we’re at a point where we have a major story. We’re at the point where the shot heard around the world has just happened. What we are about to do is going to bring this country back to 1789. The repercussions of what is happening here are just as great as the Declarations of Independence was, which was the birth of our country. We’re going through what I would call a rebirthing. That’s where we’re headed, and as Jefferson said, “Those who expect to be both ignorant and free, expect what never was and never will be.” So we teach people that they have to become re-educated. They have to come to the realization that their heritage is the law. They thought they had to give it to the New World Order or a lawyer, but no…you can’t give your life force to an individual who is controlled by other individuals, anyway. This is your heritage; your heritage is common law. If you get rid of common law, you’ve gotten rid of the heart of America.
We all have to become “lawyers,” lawyers of true law, which is natural law. And it’s really pretty simple because it’s so logical. Natural law runs off of maxims, and maxims of truth cannot be denied. For example, water doesn’t run uphill. Nobody can argue that point. That’s how true law is built; it’s built upon maxims and principles. It’s all about the facts. The whole focus is to find the injured party and repair it, and that’s what it’s all about. It doesn’t get any more difficult than that. Anything that may appear complex is made of complexities.

Questions haunt the families of Extortion 17, the 2011 helicopter mission in Afghanistan that suffered the most U.S. military deaths in a single day in the war on terrorism.
Every day, Charlie Strange, the father of one of the 30 Americans who died Aug. 6, 2011, in the flash of a rocket-propelled grenade, asks himself whether his son, Michael, was set up by someone inside the Afghan government wanting revenge on Osama bin Laden’s killers — SEAL Team 6.

“Somebody was leaking to the Taliban,” said Mr. Strange, whose son intercepted communications as a Navy cryptologist. “They knew. Somebody tipped them off. There were guys in a tower. Guys on the bush line. They were sitting there, waiting. And they sent our guys right into the middle.”
Doug Hamburger’s son, Patrick, an Army staff sergeant, also perished when the CH-47D Chinook descended to a spot less than 150 yards from where armed Taliban fighters watched from a turret.
He asks why the command sent his son into Tangi Valley toward a “hot landing zone” in a cargo airship instead of a special operations helicopter. The souped-up choppers — the MH-47 and the MH-60 Black Hawk, which SEAL Team 6 rode the stealth version of to kill bin Laden — are flown by Night Stalker pilots skilled in fast, ground-hugging maneuvers to avoid detection.
“When you want to fly them into a valley, when you’ve got hillsides on both sides of it with houses built into sides of the valley, that is an extremely dangerous mission,” Mr. Hamburger said. “The MH, the new model, they’ve got radar that will pick up an incoming missile or incoming RPG. They’re faster. They’re quicker on attack. They’re more agile. So there was every reason in the world to use the MH that night.”
Sith Douangdara, whose 26-year-old son, John, was a Navy expeditionary specialist who handled warrior dog Bart, said he has lots of unanswered questions.
“I want to know why so many U.S. servicemen, especially SEALs, were assembled on one aircraft,” he said. “I want to know why the black box of the helicopter has not been found. I want to know many things.”
Not all families believe the fact-finding investigation, conducted by Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Colt covered all issues. Gen. Colt, who has since been promoted to major general, told commanders that his job was not to find fault and his report did not criticize any person or decision.
“I want people held accountable,” said Mr. Strange, a former union construction worker who deals blackjack in a Philadelphia casino.
A spokesman for U.S. Central Command, which overseas the war and conducted the probe, declined to answer the families’ questions and referred a reporter to Gen. Colt’s report.
Congress gets involved
More than two years later, more answers may be forthcoming.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, led by Rep. Darrell E. Issa, California Republican, is making inquiries after meeting with some families.
Larry Klayman, who runs the nonprofit watchdog group Freedom Watch, has filed suit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the Pentagon, as well as the Air Force, Army and Navy. He wants a judge to order the military to turn over an array of documents under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. He said the Defense Department stonewalled his written requests, so Freedom Watch went to court last month and succeeded in forcing the government to turn over records.
For the first time, Mr. Klayman allowed The Washington Times to view the military’s investigative files turned over to family members two years ago.
“The families of our fallen heroes, who I am proud to represent, need closure to this tragedy,” Mr. Klayman said. “There are many unanswered questions and the military’s explanations of the causes of the crash do not add up.”
He said families also want changes to the military’s restrictive rules of engagement that made it more difficult for U.S. helicopter pilots to fire back at the Taliban fighters they believed brought down the Chinook.
“The families also want our military’s rules of engagement to be changed, as a testament to and in honor of their dead sons,” Mr. Klayman said. “When our nation enters into battle, it must be to win the battle, not the ‘hearts and minds’ of the Islamic jihadist enemy and the Muslim civilian population it uses as human shields.”
He also wants to know the identities of Afghan soldiers onboard, and why the aircraft’s black box, washed away in a fierce rainstorm, was never found — even though it has a homing device.
“We want to make sure our fallen heroes are respected and that answers are provided,” he said.
About an possible insider betrayal, he says: “We’re not saying that happened, but it needs to be explored because increasingly Americans are being killed at the hands of Afghans.”
Even some military personnel involved that night questioned the operations afterward.
The navigator aboard the AC-130 gunship that loitered for three hours over Tangi Valley expressed in 2011 what the families are thinking today.
“One of the other things that we did talk about — kind of what you’re hitting on, sir, is about the fact that, you know, for three hours we had been burning holes in the sky,” the officer told Gen. Colt’s team. “You’ve got [Apaches] flying around, so there’s a lot of noise going on and, basically, this entire valley knows that there’s something happening in this area. So, to do an infil on the X or Y, you know, having that element of surprise in the beginning of an operation is good, but by the time we’ve been there for three hours, and the party’s up, bringing in another aircraft like that, you know, may not be the most tactically sound decision.”
The mission
After Gen. Colt’s report became public in September 2011, the military arranged for him to brief next of kin Oct. 12 in Little Creek, Va., home to Naval Special Warfare Development Group, popularly called SEAL Team 6. The crash took the lives of 17 SEALs and five special warfare development group operators, making it the worst one-day loss in the history of U.S. naval special operations.
The chopper’s manifest included five Army soldiers, three Air Force airmen, seven Afghan soldiers and one Afghan interpreter. All 38 died. Twenty-two of them, such as Petty Officer Strange, were thrown from the aircraft. The rest died inside the fireball.
The military morgue at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware reported that all succumbed within seconds. Gen. Colt said they were “most likely rapid fatalities.”
President Obama went to Dover to receive the fallen and console the families.
“‘Your son changed America,’” Mr. Strange said the president told him. “I grabbed the president by the shoulders and said, ‘I don’t need to know about my son. I need to know what happened.’”
The nation mourned as 30 funerals were held across the country, many in small-town America.
The public was transfixed by the service in Rockford, Iowa, for Petty Officer 1st Class Jon Tumilson, a SEAL. His beloved Labrador, Hawkeye, stayed loyal to the end, lying at the casket as more than 50 SEALs sat in attendance.
The military probe
Gen. Colt had the right experience to lead the probe: He is a decorated Iraq and Afghanistan veteran and career helicopter pilot, including time in the storied 160th Special Operations Regiment. He is now deputy commander of Fort Bragg, N.C.
For the families on Oct. 12, he went over his main conclusions, then his staff handed out DVDs.
But the questions the next of kin have today did not materialize until they began poring over 1,300 pages of maps, charts, briefings and interview transcripts of task force commanders and planners connected to the incident.
The tragedy unfolded at 10:55 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2011, when 47 Army Rangers set down in two CH-47 Chinooks in high ground overlooking Afghanistan’s Tangi Valley. The mission was part of an intensified campaign to kill or capture Taliban leaders, a drive that put tremendous demands on the helicopter fleet and left newer special “ops” models in short supply.
That night, the quarry was Qari Tahir, identified as the top leader in that critical area south of Kabul where the enemy moved in and out of Pakistan.
The Rangers raided a house thought to hold Tahir. The fleeing enemy — the military calls them “squirters” — escaped through a back door. The Rangers’ leader then made a pivotal decision: He asked the special operations task force to send an immediate reaction force to help catch the squirters, though whether any of them was Tahir was not known. It turned out he was in another village.
Commanders assembled the reaction force in 50 minutes and loaded them on one conventional CH-47, call sign Extortion 17, for the brief flight piloted by a seasoned National Guardsman and a younger reservist.
At that point, it was a far more risky flight than the insertion of Rangers 3 hours earlier. The Rangers had the benefit of surprise. Extortion 17 did not. It was flying into a firefight, with the noise of Apache attack helicopters, AC-130 gunships and drones above telling everyone in the valley that a military operation was underway.
It lifted off a forward operating base at 2:22 a.m., held for several minutes at one point, then announced it was one minute out at 2:38. At that moment, Extortion 17 slowed to 58 mph, at no more than 150 feet, approaching a spot framed by trees and mud-brick huts, and “sparkled” by the infrared designator on an AC-130 gunship.
In darkness, the Taliban fired two or three rocket-propelled grenades, a Soviet-designed OG-7 anti-personnel version that is accurate inside 170 yards. The shooter had positioned himself well within the weapon’s effective range.
One of the rocket-propelled grenades clipped a rotor blade and sent the Chinook into a violent spin, then fiery crash. Within 30 minutes, bragging about the hit from Taliban fighters started appearing on communications nets.
The command press office in Kabul at first told reporters that Extortion 17 was on a rescue mission. But the Rangers did not need rescuing. They had secured the target compound and were chasing squirters.
“A reactionary force is usually sent in as a rescue, meaning our guys are in trouble and you send them in,” Mr. Hamburger said. “You don’t send a reaction force to stop a group of the enemy escaping out the back side of the village, especially in a dangerous valley in a dangerous entry like they were doing.”
The Colt report supports Mr. Hamburger’s position. The special operations command in Afghanistan rarely assembled a reaction force, much less the elite SEAL Team 6, for the chore of chasing fleeing Taliban fighters.
A Colt investigator asked the task force operations officer, “How often do [you] employ the [immediate reaction force] on a target?”
“Rarely sir,” he answered. “It is rare to have a separate IRF element that is planned like this one.”
Likewise, an officer in the combat aviation brigade that provided Extortion 17 said he knew of no previous mission to send a reaction force to catch squirters.
“It has not happened sir,” he told Gen. Colt.
This officer said Extortion 17 already had taken off before he had a chance to tell the brigade’s top officer. There was little intelligence information about the landing area, except that it was 2.5 miles from the compound raided by the Rangers.
“I think he [the commander] called directly to try to get more information,” the officer told Gen. Colt.
The officer then acknowledged that the brigade never fully assessed the possible dangers that could await Extortion 17.
“But the immediacy of it, we didn’t delve as much as we needed to into the threat at that location,” he said.
Betrayal?
Some family members believe the Americans were betrayed by the Afghan government, that someone tipped off the Taliban.
One reason they cite is that the Taliban had begun planting loyalists inside the international security force to kill Americans, a practice known as “green on blue” assassinations.
They say SEAL Team 6 had a target on its back since it became known through various Obama administration leaks to the press that the unit killed bin Laden three months earlier.
Commanders told Gen. Colt’s investigation team that the Taliban put 100 fighters into Tangi Valley for the express purpose of bringing down U.S. aircraft. A flight with 17 SEALs would be a coveted target.
Then there is the fact that a group of Taliban fighters, equipped with hand-held radios, shifted positions and gathered near Extortion 17’s landing zone — a spot never before used by the Americans.
Two Taliban fighters armed with rocket-propelled grenades just happened to be stationed in a high turret less than 150 yards from Chinook’s “hot landing zone,” or (HLZ).
One paragraph in the Colt report grabbed the families’ attention. In it, crash investigators were interviewing the top leadership of the joint special operations task force that put together the mission. One of them was asked about a manifest.
“Yes, sir,” a commander answered. “And I’m sure you know by now the manifest was accurate with the exception of the [redacted] personnel that were on. So the [redacted] personnel, they were incorrect — all seven names were incorrect. And I cannot talk to the back story of why.”
The “seven,” family members say, refers to the Afghan soldiers. The open Colt report makes no reference about why the manifest was inaccurate. Military censors redacted any reference to the Afghans. Some families believe the task force at the last moment was forced to remove seven Afghans whose names remained on the manifest and replace them with seven others.
Senior Afghans had been aware of the mission because each operation must be approved by a joint operational coordination group made up of Americans and Afghan national security forces.
A Central Command spokesman declined to discuss the issue.
“My thought is they were being set up by the Afghanistan military,” Mr. Hamburger said. “I really have a feeling that is why the Afghans were switched at the last minute. That is why they were not on the manifest. I think that our military discovered that and did not want to disclose that truth to the families. I don’t know that for sure, but you just add everything up that wasn’t right with the mission that night, it really worries you.”
Gen. Colt wrote that he believes the Taliban stood ready to fire for one simple reason: The 3-hour Ranger operation, with aircraft continually buzzing overhead, alerted every enemy in the area that more helicopters might be on the way.
“The [Apache helicopters’] early arrival at both HLZ [redacted] coupled with earlier kinetic engagements of enemy elements, likely provided early warning to Taliban fighters that additional helicopters may be inboard to the area,” he wrote.
The wrong aircraft
Family members also believe the SEALs took off in the wrong aircraft.
The CH-47D, a conventional helicopter flown by a non-special operations pilot and co-pilot, is fine for ferrying cargo and troops to uncontested areas.
But to insert commandos into a “hot” zone, specialized choppers such as the MH-47 and MH-60 flown by special operations pilots should have been used, family members say. Army Special Operations Aviation aircraft fly fast and low, while the CH-47D descends to a landing zone from a significant height, making it an easy target.

I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, and my elementary and high-school education was infused with the history that was all around us, so I was very curious to know just how the shutdown of the nation’s parks had affected my most favorite part of Minute Man National Park—the Old North Bridge.
Had the Park Service wrapped the iconic Minute Man sculpture by Daniel Chester French in burlap, so the tourists couldn’t see it? I took a few minutes on a perfectly gorgeous Columbus Day to find out.
As I expected, the parking lots had been chained off, the bathrooms were locked, and the park headquarters (the old Stedman Buttrick Georgian-style mansion) was closed up. Monument Street (foreground in the picture) is actually a long residential street with parking allowed along most of it, and with parking prohibited only in the immediate vicinity of the Bridge. So some tourists had parked by the side of the road and walked a few hundred feet to the Bridge.
Fortunately for visitors, The Old Manse, the Revolutionary-era home of the Rev. William Emerson, and situated on a nine-acre parcel abutting the Bridge and the Concord River, is owned by the Trustees of Reservations—and is not part of the national park system. It was not shut down.
The Trustees thoughtfully provided parking in their big open field for people who dared to defy the shutdown of the park.
It’s only a short walk from The Old Manse to the pathway running from Monument Street to the Old North Bridge. You can see that “Area Closed” signs were posted, but there was no further effort to barricade people from walking on the public’s property.
On most Columbus Day holidays, with such beautiful weather, this walkway to the Bridge would be teeming with tourists. Not this year.
No barricades were erected to prevent tourists from crossing the Bridge. (This would have been the easiest and most effective place to erect barricades to hassle people.)
As you can see, people could freely walk the park grounds on both sides of the river. They could learn about and enjoy the history of the place, using their own resources, just as had been done for the 185 years before the National Park Service took over the place. No “recreating” prohibited here!
The Minute Man—enduring symbol of our hard-won freedoms.
Perhaps the park rangers, who instruct thousands of visitors each year on how America’s freedoms were fought for and won, actually had absorbed the lessons they were teaching, and would have been so deeply ashamed about shutting off public access to land the public owns (and which our forebears fought to set free) that they couldn’t bring themselves to do it.
Or perhaps, the further away we get from the cesspool that is DC, and the more removed we are from the vindictive actions of Obama and Valerie Jarrett, the more likely it is that common sense will prevail.
