Conservative Christian author, radio broadcaster and family counselor Dr. James Dobson is calling it “pure barbarism on a scale rarely seen since the Middle Ages.” The new law permits abortions if the mother’s life is at risk, which can be interpreted broadly to include protecting “mental health.” To celebrate the law, evil-Cuomo ordered that One World Trade Center be illuminated in pink. The law also moves abortion violations from the state’s penal code to the health code. Dobson, founder and president of Family Talk as well as the James Dobson Family Institute, is an author and psychologist, has written dozens of books, counseled multiple presidents and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2008...

Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson, went to Beijing this month. Chinese officers were ready for Richardson: they issued hostile words, especially about U.S. relations with Taiwan. In response, CNO Richardson stuck to Washington's decades-old script of cooperation. It is time for American policymakers to change that script by, among other things, dropping themes of engagement, introducing notions of reciprocity, and showing resolve of their own. Richardson struck an upbeat note as he left China on his second official visit as America's top admiral. "I very much appreciate the hospitality I received in China," he tweeted on January 16. "I had some great discussions with my counterparts and I look forward to strengthening our relationship as we move forward." The admiral's words were in sharp contrast to those of the Chinese counterparts. They threatened military action against the United States. Moreover, Global Times, the tabloid controlled by the Communist Party's People's Daily, in an editorial, made veiled threats directed at Richardson. "Beijing needs to take practical action to help the U.S. correct its vision," the paper noted, after referring to military action to enforce Beijing's expansive territorial claims. The Democratic Party Is Alienated

{americanthinker.com} ~ At the high school where I formerly taught for 15 years in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Pledge of Allegiance was not recited when I arrived there in 1997. I was told that it had not been recited since 1966 because of the anti-Vietnam War protests... At that time, students, faculty, and administration agreed, the USA was supporting a corrupt government in Vietnam to protect oil interests, to promote a phony anti-communist script, and to deny the Vietnamese people their true national identity – namely, a united nation under their national hero, Ho Chi Minh. According to those antiwar activists, there was no sense in which we could be standing for "liberty and justice for all." Now, since the 9/11 attack of 2001, the Pledge is recited on a daily basis, but students are allowed not to stand for it. In 9th grade, most stand. In 10th grade, about half stand. By 11th grade, if two or three stand, a patriotic teacher may consider himself lucky. However, most of the teachers do not stand and do not recite the Pledge. And in 12th grade, none stands. Thus, there is a clear correlation between academic progress in the high school and patriotic respect, or rather lack of same. One of my communist colleagues said to me, "Standing and reciting the Pledge has nothing to do with love of country or patriotism. It's just a gesture." Is it not an expression of commitment to our country despite there being different levels of enthusiasm or "love" motivating the saying of that pledge? Shutdown's Economic Impact: Most Shrug, Others Suffer

by Thomas Gallatin: As the partial government shutdown enters day 33, what impact is it having upon the U.S. economy? It is certainly having at least a temporal impact upon the economic lives of roughly 800,000 federal workers, half of whom have been furloughed and the other half are currently working without pay. However, these government employees represent approximately 0.5% of the entire U.S. workforce. So, how significant an impact is the partial shutdown having upon the U.S. economy as a whole?

People who live and work in the DC metro area are most certainly feeling the shutdown effects. Bloomberg estimates that about 1.2 million federal contractors are being impacted by the shutdown to the tune of $200 million a day in lost or delayed revenue.

Some economic forecasters are projecting a first-quarter slowdown of 0.2% to 0.4% due to the shutdown, which would amount to a loss of $10 to $20 billion in GDP. However, the Hudson Institute’s Harold Furchtgott-Roth argues, “Such forecasts are too pessimistic. U.S. GDP is more than $20 trillion annually, or approximately $55 billion daily. The daily compensation of furloughed federal workers is about $52.5 million, or less than 0.1% of GDP. This figure does not include affected government contractors, but even doubling or tripling this figure yields only a small share of GDP.”

In fact, after a month of a shutdown standoff that shows no signs of ending anytime soon, the stock market appears unconcerned. As Furchtgott-Roth further notes, “The Dow and the S&P 500 are up nearly 9% since the shutdown began Dec. 22.” He adds, “Experience also gives reason for optimism. The last major government shutdown occurred in 1995-96. It affected the entire federal government, not only part of it. Yet U.S. GDP growth increased from 2.7% in 1995 to 3.8% in 1996.”

While there are indeed hundreds of thousands of federal employees as well as thousands of private government contractors currently feeling very real financial pain from this shutdown, the larger lesson here is that the strength of the U.S. economy is found in the very fact that it is independent of the federal government. Government doesn’t build and grow the economy; free-market enterprise does. ~The Patriot Post

Once again, the mainstream media went over the abyss and down rabbit hole reporting fake news and embracing lies in their demented, pathological attempt to “get” President Trump.

Last week, BuzzFeed published what turned out to be nothing less than yet another manufactured diatribe meant to overthrow President Trump. BuzzFeed offered absolutely no evidence of their baseless allegations, and the rest of the mainstream media, like pit bulls on a pork chop, went into a feeding frenzy.

Make no mistake, that BuzzFeed sack of crap story regarding President Trump ordering his attorney, Cohen to lie to congress was every bit as truthful, and factual as the Steele dossier, and their manufactured claims against Nick Sandmann the rest of the Covington Catholic students last week.

But that’s the point, isn’t it? After two years, the Mueller “investigation,” which in reality is nothing more than an orchestrated, taxpayer funded witch hunt, has turned up exactly nothing regarding any illegal activities by President Trump…so…the liberal mainstream media has been relegated to a position of simply making crap up in an attempt to baselessly smear the President.

They are so in thrall to their special interest financiers and extremist base that they can’t accept a compromise favored by 70 percent of the voters on the government shutdown. House Speaker Nancy Pulosi’s arbitrary dismissal of President Trump’s latest offer as “a non-starter” is not merely unreasonable — it does genuine harm to millions of her own party’s most loyal constituents. Even the Washington Post editorial board urged her to take the deal: Unquestionably a deal would contain galling elements for both sides; that’s the nature of compromise. But a measure of statesmanship for a member of Congress now is the ability to accept some disappointments, and shrug off the inevitable attacks from purists, if it means rescuing the lives of thousands of deserving people living among us. Pulosi’s predecessors — legendary Democratic Speaker Tip O’Neil for example — would have grabbed Trump’s compromise offer, loudly declared victory, and proceeded to run like Hell. But the caucus over which Nancy Pulosi presides today has far more in common with the Bloomingdale Lunatic Asylum than any viable political party. Her response to President Trump’s offer has been to cancel the State of the Union Address in an attempt to prevent the American people from hearing about the proposal directly from him unfiltered by the “news” media. 'Sanctuary' Politics vs. Law and Order

by Political Editors: One of the major reasons why House Speaker Nancy Pulosi (D-CA) and her fellow Democrats refuse to provide President Donald Trump with the $5.7 billion in border-wall funding to end the partial government shutdown is due to the growing so-called “sanctuary” movement. In response to Trump winning the presidency, Democrat-controlled cities and states have sought to frustrate his ability to crack down on the long-running and increasingly dangerous problem of illegal immigration by enacting “sanctuary” policies designed to limit the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to track down and deport illegal aliens. Out of more than 300 “sanctuary” communities, four “super sanctuaries” have emerged.

These “super sanctuaries” are defined by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) in a report as “jurisdictions, often major cities” that “are now using taxpayer funds to actively support and assist illegal aliens living there. Some of these cities provide free legal advice to illegal aliens fighting to stay in the country. Others provide discounted housing specifically for illegal aliens. Alarmingly, some dole out voting rights to their illegal residents.”

The CIS has determined that there are currently four “super sanctuaries,” which include Washington, DC, with its surrounding suburbs, New York City, Chicago, and the entire state of California.

Much of the Democrats’ #Resistance to Trump’s border wall is tied inextricably to a calculation that these “sanctuaries” are not merely reactionary against Trump but are indicative of a new and emerging political force. Therefore, Democrats are tailoring their political agenda to cater to these illegal aliens. As CIS observes, “The new and creative ways [Democrats] have accommodated their illegal residents indicate their willingness to continue the political battle over the illegal population.”

Democrats are changing their rhetoric on the border wall, calling it immoral in a deliberate effort to dupe Americans into believing the false narrative that Trump’s “real” agenda for tackling illegal immigration and enforcing our nation’s laws is in fact an expression of his racist, white-nationalist instincts. They along with their cohorts in the Leftmedia foment this absurd and false narrative incessantly in an effort to obfuscate from the fact that their lawless agenda of creating an unending pipeline of illegal Democrat voters is causing American citizens real and unnecessary suffering.

Declaring a once-universally accepted law to be immoral simply because one views it as a hindrance to attainment of greater power is neither just nor moral, and it is in fact the very tactic so often employed by the self-righteous authoritarian despots. ~The Patriot Post

Dems' 70% Tax Proposal Is Classist

by Louis DeBroux: Freshman Democrat Congresswoman commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the renowned economist and climatologist whose intellectual luminescence was previously hidden while she worked as a bartender, has added prophetess to her repertoire, warning us this week that “the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.” Just in case that wasn’t dire enough, she called “climate change” her generation’s “World War II.”

But fear not, ye masses trembling in apocalyptic fear, for Ms. commie-Ocasio-Cortez has the solution — a “Green New Deal” eliminating fossil fuels by 2030 while lowering inequality! And while “progressives” laud the Green New Deal, they are less comfortable attaching a price tag, and no wonder. Though commie-Cortez is short on details, a similar plan offered by Green Party chairman Jill Stein would cost an astronomical $700 billion to $1 trillion per year.

So how to pay for it? According to commie-Cortez, through more debt spending and raising the marginal income tax rate on high earners ($10 million/year and above) to 70%. Unfortunately, higher tax rates have historically resulted in only modest revenue gains while creating a drag on the economy.

Why? As the Tax Foundation’s Kyle Pomerleau and Huaqun Li explain, promises of increased revenue from higher tax rates “do not account for behavioral effects.” For example, “A tax rate that high could encourage individuals to shelter their income, thus reducing potential revenue from this proposal.”

In other words, those earning enough to be taxed at the 70% level have myriad ways to shelter their money from such immorally confiscatory tax rates, so the net result is that rather than investing that money and creating new jobs, the money is sheltered. Counter intuitively, historical tax records show the lower the marginal tax rate, the greater percentage of total taxes are paid by the wealthy.

Because high earners react to higher tax rates by shifting income to lower-tax uses, the Tax Foundation estimates commie-Ocasio-Cortez’s plan would only generate an additional $189 billion over 10 years. Some pro-tax-increase economists argue up to $700 billion could be raised over a decade, but they ignore the behavioral changes resulting from higher taxes. And if, as some Democrats propose, capital gains were treated as normal income and taxed at the 70% rate, government would actually lose an estimated $63.5 billion. Either way, the tax increase would not come close to funding the Left’s green-energy pipe dream unless Democrats follow historical precedent and tax the rich on the way to also hitting the middle class.

commie-Ocasio-Cortez and her socialist Myrmidons should also take a lesson from history and reject public policy driven by jealousy and envy. While “the rich” make an easy target, we should remember that the income tax itself, which now impacts most Americans and makes the IRS feared and hated, only passed because Congress claimed it would punish only the so-called rich.

After passage of the 16th Amendment, President Woodrow Wilson called a special session of Congress to pass the income tax. It started off as a 1% tax on incomes above $3,000 (roughly $76,000 in 2018 dollars) with surcharges of between 2% and 7% on incomes between $20,000 and $500,000 (between $500,000 and $12.7 million in 2018 dollars).

But the tax rates soon increased, and the threshold at which the tax kicked in decreased, until everyday Americans working hard and sacrificing to make ends meet discovered the tax man now considered them “rich” and wanted their tax money.

In 1914, the income tax generated just $28 million from a tiny handful of wealthy Americans. Two years later the rate was raised to 15%, generating $68 million from a few more workers. In 2017, nearly every working American had become subject to the income tax, and the top marginal rate had skyrocketed to 39.6%, generating a staggering $1.688 trillion.

And as bad as the income tax is for economic growth and individual prosperity, it has done far more damage to individual liberties. In 1913, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Richard E. Byrd warned, “A hand from Washington will be stretched out and placed upon every man’s business. … Heavy fines imposed by distant and unfamiliar tribunals will constantly menace the taxpayer. An army of Federal officials, spies and detectives will descend upon the state.”

But alas, driven by greed and envy, Americans chose to punish their neighbors, foolishly thinking punishment would never come for them. Too many Americans are perfectly happy to raise taxes on others as long as it doesn’t impact them.

In 1965, former IRS Commissioner T. Coleman Andrews warned of the need to abolish the income tax, declaring, “Congress went beyond merely enacting an income tax law and repealed Article IV of the Bill of Rights, by empowering the tax collector to do the very things from which that article says we were to be secure. It opened up our homes, our papers and our effects to the prying eyes of government agents and set the stage for searches of our books and vaults and for inquiries into our private affairs whenever the tax men might decide. … The income tax is bad because it was conceived in class hatred [and] is an instrument of vengeance.”

With “progressives,” government is never big enough and taxes are never high enough. But maybe President Donald Trump should call out their hypocrisy by agreeing to the tax increase so long as every penny is used to pay down the national debt. It would be a poison pill for Democrats.

Better yet, we should repeal the income tax altogether and restore individual liberty. ~The Patriot Post

H.R. 1: Democrats Act to Strip State Powers Over Elections

Democrats in Congress have announced their top legislative priority, and it isn’t health care, immigration, or taxes. Instead, they want to centralize power over elections in Washington, D.C. H.R. 1 is number one on the legislative agenda because it is the number one priority of House Democrats, leftist groups, deep-pocketed dark money, and those who use election process rules to help win elections—or at least to cause chaos. The bill is a 571-page dreamscape of wild wishes and federal mandates on states. The Constitution decentralizes power over American elections and puts states in charge. H.R. 1 would undo that. Decentralization promotes individual liberty. When power over elections is centralized, it is easier for that power to be abused. When power over elections is decentralized, no single malevolent actor can exert improper control over the process. That is precisely why Democrats are so eager for Washington, D.C., to have more power over our elections. H.R. 1 has 218 cosponsors. It forces states to implement mandatory voter registration. If someone is on a government list—such as receiving welfare benefits or rental subsidies—then they would be automatically registered to vote. Few states have enacted these systems because Americans still view civic participation as a voluntary choice. Moreover, aggregated government lists always contain duplicates and errors that states, even without mandatory voter registration, frequently fail to catch and fix. H.R. 1 also mandates that states allow all felons to vote. Currently, states have the power under the Constitution to set the terms of eligibility in each state. Some states, like Maine, have decided that voting machines should be rolled into the prisons. Other states, like Nevada, have chosen to make a felony a disenfranchising event... The Iron Dome missile defense system had intercepted a long-range missile fired by Iranian forces in Syria. The missile was an Iranian-made surface-to-surface model with a range of some 200 km with a payload of hundreds of kilograms of explosives that was fired from the outskirts of Damascus. The launch of this type of missile doesn’t happen at a moment’s notice, it took months of preparation and the approval of the highest officials in Tehran. Israeli intelligence must have identified the chatter. They knew it was coming. While the primary targets of the Iron Dome system are short-range rockets and other artillery rounds that have been successfully intercepted, like the Iranian surface-to-surface missile on Sunday, the job should be done by the David Sling missile defense system. Supreme Court Puts New York City Gun Ban on Trial

by Jordan Candler: It’s been close to a decade since the Supreme Court wrangled with a case pertaining to the Second Amendment, that most critical of Amendments because it ensures all others, but that’s about to change. The 2010 case McDonald v. City of Chicago currently denotes the last instance in which the Supreme Court intervened on an issue directly related to the Second Amendment, though McDonald largely piggybacked on the benchmark 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller.

On Tuesday, however, “The justices agreed to consider a petition backed by gun owners’ groups asking them to strike down New York City’s strict rules for carrying legally owned guns outside the home,” USA Today reports. “The rules do not allow gun owners to transport firearms outside city limits, even to practice ranges or second homes. Lower courts have upheld the city’s regulations.”

Gun-rights activists explained to the Supreme Court, “It is business as usual for draconian restrictions in New York, and this court’s transformational rulings remain theoretical for the city’s 8.5 million residents.” Yet the city contends, “Unlike golf clubs and musical instruments, firearms present public safety risks that the city has a legitimate interest in protecting against. Limiting their possession and use in public minimizes the risk of gun violence.” Assuming expectations become reality, the city’s argument won’t pass muster with the Supreme Court.

The Wall Street Journal notes, “The case will put a spotlight on the court’s newest justice, Brett Kavanaugh, whose expansive view of gun rights while a lower-court judge came into focus during confirmation hearings last fall. In 2011, while serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, then-Judge Kavanaugh dissented from an opinion upholding a D.C. law prohibiting semiautomatic rifles it classified as ‘assault weapons’ within city limits and barring large-capacity ammunition magazines.”

The Journal adds, “Judge Kavanaugh … wrote that ‘the Constitution disables the government from employing certain means to prevent, deter, or detect violent crime,’ a position that helped inspire the National Rifle Association to back his confirmation last year with a major advertising campaign.”

In November, our Brian Mark Weber observed, “The [Heller] ruling came far too late to push back against decades of leftist propaganda and activism designed to convince millions of Americans that the Second Amendment was far different from the other nine rights — that it was neither individual nor narrowly limited but collective and extremely limited. Since then, lower courts have had a field day misinterpreting the Constitution and upholding laws making it harder for citizens to acquire guns.”

He added, “All this would be of less concern if the Supreme Court and its new, more conservative majority would simply take up more Second Amendment cases and decisively reestablish the self-evident right of American citizens to defend themselves. Indeed, the High Court may be the last best hope for securing this right against a leftist obsession to take it away.” The Supreme Court this week made a positive step toward doing just that. What if dirty cop-Mueller

doesn't give Democrats what they want?

{washingtonexaminer.com} ~ The position of most Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill is that lawmakers are waiting until Trump-Russia special counsel dirty cop-Robert Mueller delivers his report... before considering whether to impeach President Trump. But what if dirty cop-Mueller does not accuse the president of wrongdoing, or at least impeachable wrongdoing? Would Democrats say, 'Never mind,' put away thoughts of impeachment, and move on to the next item on their agenda? That seems unlikely. Many Democrats are deeply, emotionally committed to resisting Trump. Sixty-six House Democrats voted to allow impeachment articles to move forward a year ago. Now, with the House in Democratic hands, and after another year of media-hyped Trump-Russia allegations, there's no reason to believe Democrats would abandon the Russia issue regardless of what dirty cop-Mueller does. In addition, some Democrats are warning that the public might not see all of dirty cop-Mueller's report. Justice Department rules don't require it, and attorney general nominee William Barr, in recent confirmation hearings, did not promise to release the whole thing. So now there is talk about starting a new House Trump-Russia investigation that would essentially replicate what dirty cop-Mueller is doing now, but with the assurance that the proper anti-Trump result would be reached and that it could be used for impeachment purposes. When dirty cop-Mueller poured water on the BuzzFeed report claiming that Trump directed fixer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, Rep. scumbag-Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, pledged to take up where BuzzFeed left off, no matter what dirty cop-Mueller said. "Are you still going to investigate the claims?" scumbsag-Schiff was asked on CBS's "Face the Nation."...They will be wasting time and tax money. But they don't care.

Netanyahu to Hamas: ‘If you escalate,

The officer was struck by a bullet that hit his helmet. The IDF responded with tank fire on a Hamas observation post that killed one. Speaking to cadets of the IDF's officer course currently training at Shizafon, Netanyahu also addressed Iran, reiterating that it is Israel's “principal enemy.”...

Four days after they began their hunger strike, the two women were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The women say they will not end their hunger strike unless the PA releases Abdel Rahman Shaheen, who was detained in early January. The mother of another Palestinian being held in PA prison, Murad Fattash, has also gone on a hunger strike to protest the continued incarceration of her son, who was also detained by the PA in early January. Palestinians say that Shaheen and Fattash are among dozens of "political detainees" who are being held in PA prisons and detention centers in various parts of the West Bank. Most of the detainees were taken into custody for criticizing the PA and its leaders and policies. They include engineers, lawyers, university lecturers and students, journalists and political activists affiliated with opposition groups like Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the PLO's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The First Step Act’s first steps are stalled

Advocates for prisoners, the American Civil Liberties Union, White House advisor and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, prosecutors, and the Fraternal Order of Police all praised the legislation. With provisions to reduce sentences, steps to limit recidivism, and rewards for well-behaved inmates, the law is seen as an important effort to ease crowding in the federal prison system, which holds about 180,000 people, 14 percent more than it is allowed to house, according to the Federal Prison System’s budget request for 2019. Crowding at high security facilities remains a particular challenge, the agency said. The First Step Act was touted as beginning a reversal of decades of tough-on-crime policies. But just hours after the bill was signed by President Trump, the federal government began a shutdown of “nonessential” government operations, which, now more than a month later, has stopped efforts by the federal government to meet the new law’s first deadline - the selection of a team to develop and help implement a tool to assess risk and needs. As part of the “Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person Act,” the First Step Act’s formal name, the National Institute of Justice - part of the Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs - was supposed to establish an Independent Review Commission within 30 days of the law’s enactment. The review commission is supposed to assist the attorney general and the Bureau of Prisons in the design and deployment of the risk and needs assessment tool, which will be used to determine the risk of recidivism and violent misconduct as well as assign the types, lengths, and rewards for recidivism reduction programs...

The ordeal has caused some of Trump’s advisers to urge the president to pull Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, from television appearances, though there is not a push for the lawyer to be fired, the AP reported. Trump's State of the Union Options

Speaker Nancy Pulosi has given President Trump an opportunity to change the dynamic of the State of the Union address, an event that has become predictable and often boring. It has featured members of Congress popping up and down like whack-a-moles, interrupting the president with applause if they agree with him, or stone silence if they don’t.

Pulosi claims that because of the partial government shutdown, the security of the U.S. Capitol cannot be guaranteed. The Department of Homeland Security debunked her claim, saying that the Secret Service and Capitol Police will perform their duties whether or not they are receiving paychecks.

President Trump might consider reverting to the pattern of previous presidents, sending his address to Congress in writing. Then he might deliver the speech from the Oval Office, or at one of his rallies instead of in the Capitol Building. Democrats wouldn’t be able to instantly respond on television, as they did following the president’s border wall speech, and even if they did, they would likely look as small as Pulosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck scumbag-Schumer (D-NY) did then.

The truth is that the economic state of the union is good. According to Labor Department data, more people than ever are working and unemployment figures, especially in the African-American and Hispanic communities, are at record, or near record lows. The stock market, after a recent decline, has rebounded, for which retirees are no doubt grateful.

Unfortunately, the political state of the country is anything but unified; not even close. For decades the media and their Democrat allies have blamed Republicans for dividing the country when they stand on their principles, only praising members of the GOP when they submit to Democrat demands.

The Constitution requires a president to deliver an annual assessment of the state of the union. George Washington delivered the first one before Congress on Jan. 8, 1790 in New York City, which was the new nation’s provisional capital. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson, believing an in-person address would have made him look like a king appearing before his subjects, set the precedent of writing his state of the union address and having it delivered to Congress by a clerk.

Woodrow Wilson re-established the practice of an in-person speech, but the practice was not consistent even during the latter part of the 20th century. Jimmy Carter delivered a written report in January 1981, shortly before Ronald Reagan was inaugurated. Every president since has delivered a State of the Union address before Congress with Reagan adding a twist, the recognition of balcony guests he and his successors wished to honor.

When radio and especially television offered an opportunity for presidents to be heard and later seen, most have delivered their remarks in person. The House of Representatives offers an impressive backdrop, but shots of some members of Congress smirking, texting and otherwise not paying much attention, do not demonstrate the respect the speech deserves.

Most people who pay attention to the childish and partisan behavior that characterizes Washington these days can do their own assessment of the state of the union. If they have jobs and are prospering, they probably think it is pretty good — the pettiness in Washington notwithstanding.

Should President Trump decide to do an alternative report, either in writing, or from the White House, or even a retro address on radio, he is likely to get more attention than he would receive from delivering it in person. He could also go ahead with a speech in the House of Representatives and by doing so challenge Democrats and Pulosi’s claims of insufficient security. Maybe Pulosi and scumbag-Schumer would boycott the speech; it would certainly appeal to their liberal base. It would also demonstrate who the real culprits are when it comes to the country’s disunity. ~The Patriot Post

Trump: Maduro is no longer president of Venezuela

Treasury Department Sanctions Venezuelan

Officials Who Stole Billions

{fdd.org} ~ On January 8, the Trump administration sanctioned a network of corrupt Venezuelan businessmen and senior officials for their role in a multi-billion dollar bribery and embezzlement scheme... just days ahead of the inauguration of Venezuelan strongman Nicholas Maduro as president. That the Treasury Department targeted senior Venezuelan officials ahead of Maduro’s inauguration is unsurprising; what is novel is Treasury’s newfound willingness to compel a sanctioned person to relinquish their ownership and control of a large business by offering to lift sanctions on that company if new non-sanctioned parties assume ownership and control. Globovision is now subject to sanctions because any company that is owned by a single person or multiple persons subject to sanctions – meaning they have an ownership stake of 50 percent or more – is automatically sanctioned. This is commonly referred to as a “derivative designation.” What was novel in this case – going beyond similar actions such as the efforts to force Russian SDN Oleg Deripaska to give up ownership and control of EN+ and Rusal – is that Treasury did not just issue the designation, but clearly spelled out what actions Globovision would have to take to get sanctions lifted. In May 2013, Globovision was sold to a consortium of businessmen – including Gorrin and Gustavo Perdomo, who was also designated along with Gorrin – with close ties to the Maduro government. Up until that point, it was Venezuela’s last major television station still critical of the government. The prior ownership group claimed that mounting government fines and political harassment compelled them to sell. The use of sanctions to wrest this station from Venezuelan government control could restore some of the network’s independence. Gorrin was well known to U.S. authorities before his designation, as the Justice Department indicted him this past August on corruption and money laundering charges. Gorrin’s main partner in this scheme, former Venezuelan Treasurer Alejandro Andrade, pleaded guilty in U.S. court to money laundering charges and reportedly admitted receiving $1 billion in bribes from Gorrin...

Illegal Wolves Enter Among the Sheep

by Nate Jackson: Kate Steinle. Ronald da Silva. Sarah Root. Mollie Tibbetts. And most recently, amid the heated debates about border security, police officer Ronil Singh. These are just some of the names among countless other Americans who have been murdered by illegal immigrants — people who shouldn’t have been in the country, some of whom had already been deported and returned here anyway. Sadly, we can add four Nevada residents, three of them elderly, to that list: Gerald and Sharon David, Connie Koontz, and Sophia Renken, all of whom were allegedly murdered this month by Wilbur Ernesto Martinez-Guzman, a 19-year-old illegal alien.

Since Nevada is not a sanctuary state like neighboring California, law-enforcement officials were able to hold Martinez-Guzman on immigration charges while they collected additional evidence on the murder cases. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the suspect “was likely in the United States illegally and was detainable.” And Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said authorities “feel confident” they have “evidence that will link him to all four homicides,” as well as burglary and possession of stolen property.
There are, of course, success stories of apprehending criminal illegal aliens before they harm any Americans. The Washington Times reports, “Zabi-Ullah Hemmat wasn’t just one of 415,816 illegal immigrants caught at the southwest border in fiscal 2016. Nor was he just another of the 84 people from Afghanistan apprehended by Border Patrol agents that year. … Mr. Hemmat is one of the terrorism suspects caught trying to sneak into the U.S. from Mexico.” Authorities found him on the no-fly list.
The Department of Homeland Security says 3,000 similarly “special interest” migrants were “encountered” by border agents in 2018. But, warned DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, “These are just the terror suspects we know about who reach our border.”
Exactly. But rather than secure our border, Democrats want to keep the government shut down and expand “sanctuary” cities. It’s worth noting that the vast majority of illegals truly are just trying to make a better life for themselves in America. No, the Pentagon did not waste $28 billion

{aei.org} ~ Last week, headlines blared with claims that the Defense Department had failed to spend $28 billion in time... forfeiting all that money back to the US Treasury. The story said the Pentagon had “let $28 billion go to waste,” with “tens of billions of dollars unspent” as “time ran out.” This would be an awesome and scandalous story, were it true. Fortunately, it’s not. Just about all of this $28 billion in taxpayer funds will be spent. What this story really highlights is the arcane complexity of the budget execution process at the world’s largest organization. The Pentagon receives a lot of criticism on many different topics, but this is one instance in which piling on is unwarranted. The implication of the stories, of course, was that “The Pentagon Literally Has More Money Than It Knows What To Do With.” These stories pulled from a report on the first year of the consolidated Pentagon audit released by the office of the DoD Inspector General, which oversees the annual audits. In fairness to reporters, the Pentagon itself remains unable to effectively communicate, with its spokesman only clarifying that the $28 billion came from a running tally since fiscal year 2013. Were the Pentagon unable to spend the money provided it by Congress, Capitol Hill would be abuzz. The scene of congressional appropriators finding $28 billion between the proverbial cushions would make Wall Street’s Black Friday look orderly. More seriously, appropriations committee staff keep very close watch on the Pentagon’s execution of government funds to ensure money is not being misused or going unused, which is why the Pentagon has an entire chapter of the Financial Management Regulation dedicated to processing expired funding in a responsible fashion...

The 80-year-old big government advocating, bitterly partisan race baiter has led the calls to impeach President Donald Trump, harass Cabinet members in public, and basically pour vitriol on anyone and everyone who doesn’t follow socialist dogma. She is unapologetic about her caustic rhetoric, she is out to hurt political opponents — and she is now in charge of the House Financial Services Committee.

The big news on the street right now is that socialist pop star of the moment commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be joining the Financial Services Committee. She has called for the breakup of the nation’s largest banks and “taxing Wall Street to support tuition-free public universities and trade schools.” commie-Ocasio-Cortez will fit right in with scumbag/mad-Waters.
We know all about the leftist freshman and her ambitious plans to remake America in the failed socialist tradition. She is the “new face of the Democratic Party,” after all. But people may need a refresher on scumbag/mad-Maxine Waters.
scumbag/mad-Waters has been part of the Financial Services Committee since being elected to Congress, and she has been a ranking member or chair of all its subcommittees at one time or another. She is the first woman to chair the committee.
A puff piece by the lefty news site Vox laid out the  scumbag/mad-Waters agenda for this session, and rest assured, she’s looking to return to the bad old days of the Barack  scumbag/liar-nObama years. This includes shoring up the Consumer Financial Protection Board and other Dodd-Frank creations, and of course going after Trump and other Republicans with all sorts of investigations into whatever she can conjure up.
The media would rather forget, but let us all remember that scumbag/mad-Waters was under investigative scrutiny herself back in 2010. She was accused of violating House ethics rules when she put together a meeting between Treasury Department officials and executives of a bank in which her husband was an investor and a former board member.
Boston-based OneUnited was supposed to be a “community bank” that aided minorities, but it had been flagged by several oversight agencies as an unsatisfactory lender that wasn’t doing a whole lot of community investing or lending. It was heavily leveraged in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and when both loan entities went into government conservatorship, OneUnited was nearly wiped out. The bank later received a $12 million bailout through the TARP program.
scumbag/mad-Waters was hit with three counts of violating House ethics rules for not disclosing her personal connection to the bank through her husband. She immediately went on the attack, claiming the investigation was racially motivated. She vowed a loud public fight. The House Ethics Committee eventually blinked, and charges against  scumbag/mad-Waters were dropped in 2012 — by a GOP House.
scumbag/mad-Waters also vehemently denied taking campaign donations from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, agencies that she publicly stated were working just fine in 2004. Of course, that was not the case. When each blew up five years later, taxpayers were stuck bailing out everyone caught in the wake, including OneUnited, to cover bad bets made by people like scumbag/mad-Waters’s husband.
scumbag/mad-Maxine Waters has been named one of the most corrupt members of Congress by the nonpartisan  Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. She is not an honest person. She speaks a lot about helping minorities and protecting consumers from the banks, but somehow the only people who seem to cash in are those associated with Waters. Now that she is in a position of real power that could directly affect our economy, maybe we should devise a way to protect consumers from scumbag/mad-Maxine Waters.

The Border Wall Standoff: What Do Latinos and Hispanics Think?

by Mark Alexander: Donald Trump upped the ante Saturday in the poker standoff with House Speaker Nancy Pulosi and her gang of Democrat obstructionists.

In my analysis on the partial government shutdown showdown over the border three weeks ago, I predicted that Trump would seek “some concession from Democrats by using Barack scumbag/lianObama’s illegal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) deceit as a bargaining chip. That could come by offering green cards to the children of illegal immigrants already in the U.S., but not a path to citizenship.”
In exchange for the $5.7 billion he has requested for border security, Trump formally put that DACA offer on the table, offering a three-year extension of protections for 700,000 immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally as children and were protected from deportation under scumbag/liar-nObama’s DACA political charades. He also included an extension of protection for 300,000 aliens who have been granted Temporary Protected Status — those who can’t safely return to their home countries. Again, no amnesty and no fast-track to citizenship.
Trump is also requesting 2,750 new Border Patrol agents and 75 new immigration judges, $805 million for drug interdiction efforts at ports of entry and $800 million in humanitarian assistance at the border.
Endeavoring to corner Democrats, Trump noted, “Our immigration system should be a source of pride, not a source of shame as it is all over the world. … If we are successful in this effort, we will have the best chance in a long time at real, bipartisan immigration reform. And it won’t stop here; it will keep going until we do it all.”
Amid some protests from Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Trump had offered a “bold solution,” adding, “Compromise in divided government means that everyone can’t get everything they want every time. The President’s proposal reflects that. It strikes a fair compromise by incorporating priorities from both sides of the aisle.”
Predictably, Pulosi rebuffed the offer, noting, “It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter.” She then, in effect, provided a counteroffer, saying, “For one thing, this proposal does not include the permanent solution for the Dreamers and TPS recipients that our country needs and supports.” House Democrats plan to pass six bills to reopen government operations this week, which Pulosi insists Trump must sign before any further debate: “I am ready to sit down at any time after the government is opened and work to resolve all outstanding issues.”
Notably, even The Washington Post suggested Pulosi erred: “To refuse even to talk until the government reopens does no favors to sidelined federal workers and contractors. … A measure of statesmanship for a member of Congress now is the ability to accept some disappointments, and shrug off the inevitable attacks from purists, if it means rescuing the lives of thousands of deserving people living among us.”
According to Pew Research, the standoff has created the sharpest partisan divide on record. According to the survey, 88% of border-wall opponents “say it would not be acceptable to pass a bill that includes Trump’s request for wall funding, if that is the only way to end the shutdown,” while 72% of border-security supporters “say a bill to end the shutdown would be unacceptable if it does not include Trump’s funding request.”
But there is another poll from a reputable source that caught my attention last week. An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll found that Hispanic and Latino approval of Trump surged 19 points in just one month and is now at 50%.
This finding seems counterintuitive. But Democrats, who are in effect advocating for open borders, hoping to appease their Hispanic and Latino constituencies while creating a future-voter pipeline, have run into a problem. A growing number of those constituents don’t want the deflationary job and wage competition from more illegals flooding in from Mexico and Central America. In December, the employment rate for Hispanics and Latinos fell to a record low. Democrats say they support a “living wage” but then advocate, in effect, an open border, which ensures that millions of working men and women will never break free of the minimum wage. ~The Patriot Post

For instance, NATO is not just a military alliance, but “a political alliance as well,” von der Leyen admitted. But amid historic skepticism about the alliance expressed openly by President Trump and the millions of American voters who elected him, the pro-NATO propaganda smacks of desperation. In short, it seems NATO's future is uncertain at best. And globalists, apparently recognizing the threat to their dangerous agenda, have launched a full-blown public relations campaign to shore up support for the scheme. A “stronger NATO will serve the security interests of all members,” claimed whoever wrote the piece for von der Leyen, probably PR professionals. “Most of all, it will send a clear signal to those opposing the rules-based international order: We trans-Atlantic allies are ready and willing to defend our soil, our people and our freedom.” Did you catch that? A strong NATO is needed to protect against those who oppose the “rules-based international order.” Indeed, she argued that NATO was not just about bases and troops, but about defending the “world order,” a term often used by globalists to refer to the institutions of global governance foisted on humanity — primarily using deception — since the end of World War II...

The satellite images released by the Israeli satellite company ImageSat International show Iranian weapons depots at the Damascus International Airport before and after the strikes. The images showed that while the IDF hit and completely destroyed the targets in the vicinity of the airport, the nearby civilian passenger terminal remained intact. They also showed the damaged sustained by the Syrian army’s anti-aircraft systems following the attack. Israel’s military made a rare admission of responsibility as it was carrying out the strikes, writing on Twitter at 1:42 a.m. that “We have started striking Iranian Quds targets in Syrian territory. Harb is the nonpartisan judge of the 3rd Circuit Court in Michigan. Harb was appointed on October 22, 2015, by Republican Governor Rick Snyder to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Daniel Ryan. He ran unopposed for election in 2016 to serve out the remainder of Ryan’s term. George Abdallah Jr. is the nonpartisan judge of the Superior Court of San Joaquin County California Office 12 in California. Abdallah earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California and his J.D. from Humphreys College of Law. Halim Dhanidina is a nonpartisan Division 3 judge of the California 2nd District Court of Appeal. Gov. Jerry Brown (D) appointed Dhanidina to replace Justice Richard Aldrich on July 24, 2018, and he was confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments on August 23, 2018. Dhanidina was previously a judge on the Superior Court of Los Angeles County in California from 2012 to 2018. He was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in May 2012 to a newly created position...

{townhall.com} ~ When you receive your paycheck and look at the withholding for federal, state and sometimes city taxes, along with Social Security and Medicare, you probably don't think you're underpaying governments and want them to take more.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio believes that if you have played by what used to be called "the rules" and are making a decent living, taking care of yourself and your family and not relying on government, your taxes should be increased.

In his State of the City address last week, de Blasio said, "...brothers and sisters, there's plenty of money in the world. There's plenty of money in this city. It's just in the wrong hands." He continued: "You haven't been paid what you deserve for all the hard work. You haven't been given the time you deserve. You're not living the life you deserve. And here is the cold, hard truth: It's no accident. It's an agenda." He blamed presidential administrations from Reagan to Trump.

The mayor ignores the tax cuts and in some cases spending reductions that have fueled an economic boom, producing more wealth for individuals and more revenue for governments.

The mayor is not alone in promoting unvarnished liberalism, which the many on the left have tried to mask behind the "progressive" euphemism. Rep. commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) suggests we institute a 70 percent tax rate on the wealthy. Julian Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio and HUD secretary, who just announced he is running for president, has resurrected the "fair share" lingo of past Democrats. In an interview with ABC News, Castro seemed nostalgic for a time when the top marginal tax rate was 90 percent.

Sen. Elizabeth dinky-Warren (D-MA), who has formed a presidential exploratory committee, hasn't said what top tax rate she favors, but she told CNBC last July that "Ninety percent sounds pretty shockingly high." Why, because it would stifle incentive? What about Eighty percent? Why not confiscate all private-sector money and let the government decide how much each of us should be allowed to have? Wouldn't pure socialism be a dream come true for the far left?

It's not that higher taxes and more government spending hasn't been tried. Lyndon Johnson's Great Society, a series of U.S. programs charged with totally eliminating poverty and racial injustice in the country, is but one example. Johnson failed to achieve his goal of wiping out poverty because his social programs began in Washington, not in individual hearts and minds.

The Wall Street Journal recently carried a column about Sweden's experience with socialism. It was written by Jesus Fernandez-Villaverde, a professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania, and Lee E. Ohanian, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and professor of economics at UCLA.

The authors noted, "Until the mid-20th century, Sweden pursued highly competitive market-based policies. By 1970 Sweden achieved the world's fourth-highest per capita income. Then increasingly radical Social Democratic governments raised taxes, spending and regulation much more than any other Western European country. Economic performance sputtered. By the early 1990s, Sweden's per capita income ranking had dropped to 14th. Economic growth from 1970 to the early 1990s was roughly 1 percentage point lower than in Europe and 2 points lower than in the U.S."

In 1991, they write, a market-oriented government assumed power and instituted major reforms. As a result, the country is now "richer than all of the major EU countries and is within 15 percent of U.S. per capita GDP. While Sweden still has a larger government than the U.S., its tax code is flatter. The progressivity of the U.S. tax code distorts incentives." Precisely!

Sweden's experience with socialism has a lesson for Americans and especially millennials, a majority of whom favor socialism over capitalism, according to a 2016 Harvard University survey. Maybe they should take a closer look at their pay stubs and ask themselves whether they would be OK with handing over more of their net pay to federal, state and local governments that irresponsibly and unnecessarily spend their money on programs that don't work.

In his statement, the Senate Minority Whip explained that he could not accept the deal Trump offered. “I cannot support the proposed offer as reported, and I do not believe it can pass the Senate.” The president’s plan included a three-year extension of legal protections for DACA recipients and those in Temporary Protected Status (TPS) — concessions that mirror those proposed in December 2016 in the bipartisan Bridge Act. The Bridge Act was drafted to protect Dreamers after then President-elect Trump promised to tear up the scumbag/liar-nObama-era executive order that put DACA on the books in the first place... Another idiot.

Israel Air Force strikes southern Syria

{jpost.com} ~ Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted a projectile launched from Syria after Damascus accused Jerusalem of carrying out a rare daytime attack on the south of the country on Sunday... Pictures from Israel’s popular Mount Hermon ski resort, which was full of tourists enjoying the snow-filled hill, showed two trails from Iron Dome missiles while screams from children were heard in a video from the scene. The interception came shortly after the Syrian regime accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes in the south of the country, triggering air defenses that intercepted several of them. “A military source said that our air defenses had successfully engaged an Israeli aerial attack targeting the southern region and prevented it from achieving any of its objectives,” read a report by the official Syrian news agency SANA. Al-Manar, Hezbollah’s media network, reported the attack near Damascus but gave no further details. Syrian regime supporters said that a total of nine Israeli missiles were intercepted by regime air defenses. The Wall by the Numbers

by Brian Mark Weber: Historian Victor Davis Hanson recently wrote, “There are 11 million to 13 million Mexican citizens currently living in the United States illegally.” (It may be closer to 22 million.) He continued, “Millions more emigrated previously and are now U.S. citizens. A recent poll revealed that one-third of Mexicans (34 percent) would like to emigrate to the United States. With Mexico having a population of about 130 million, that amounts to some 44 million would-be immigrants. Such massive potential emigration into the United States makes no sense.”

Currently, the number of individual border apprehensions is decreasing, but the number of families crossing the border is increasing. This is due to the poor economic conditions and unstable political climate of Central American countries. The Washington Post reports that the percentage of border crossers that are families has increased from 55% to 64% in recent months.
The border runs for about 2,000 miles, with about a third of it running along the Rio Grande. In other areas, mountainous terrain makes it challenging to construct a wall. A wall, then, would be very helpful but would not alone solve the problem.
“Nearly half of all the unauthorized migrants now living in the United States entered the country legally through a port of entry such as an airport or a border crossing point where they were subject to inspection by immigration officials,” according to a Pew Research Center study. “As much as 45% of the total unauthorized migrant population entered the country with visas that allowed them to visit or reside in the U.S. for a limited amount of time.”
This prompts the question: Do we really need a literal wall stretching for 2,000 miles?
In April 2017, the president of the National Border Patrol Council, Brandon Judd, testified before Congress, “I will not advocate for 2,000 miles’ worth of border. That is just not necessary. But what I will advocate for is a border wall in strategic locations, which helps us secure the border. … The building of barriers and large fences, a bipartisan effort, allowed agents in part to dictate where illegal crossings took place and doubled how effective I was able to be in apprehending illegal border crossers.”
About one third of the 2,000-mile border already includes some type of barrier due to the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which mandated nearly 700 miles of border fencing. Nearly all of that is already in place, but there are long stretches where the border is wide open. And since nearly 12 million people live along the border, the impact of illegal immigration is immediate and serious. As the president mentioned in his recent address to the nation, it’s not just about illegals taking American jobs but also about the flow of drugs across the border.
Jim Geraghty at National Review writes, “The good news for those who wish to see a wall built along the U.S.-Mexican border is that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has built seven miles of 30-foot-high wall in the past few months, and roughly 30 more miles of high fencing are slated for construction. The bad news is that there’s still a lot of border to go.” As of now, the funding isn’t there.
Carlos Ballesteros wrote at Newsweek early last year, “Nearly a year into his presidency, Trump has not been able to secure the funding — or the support — he needs to build his border wall.” He adds, “The border wall has become a serious wedge between Democrats and Republicans.” Twenty-eight days into a partial government shutdown over its funding, that’s an understatement. But what the president wants is reasonable.
Despite the fact that we have a third of the wall built, Stef W. Kight writes at Axios, “That still leaves more than half of the almost 2,000-mile border uncovered, and there are gaps and dilapidated fencing in the barriers that are in place. The fight that has shut down the government is basically about 234 miles of new border wall that President Trump wants, according to the Trump administration’s latest request.”
With Nancy Pulosi refusing to give in — she has threatened to cancel the State of the Union address — the president must continue to hold firm in the face of both wobbly Republicans and intransigent Democrats. Maybe his strategy is working. In recent days, some House Democrats have expressed a willingness to compromise with the president. Even House Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland recently admitted that a “wall that protects people is not immoral.”
With Democrats having been on board for a border wall in the past, it’s time to do what’s best for the American people. Trump’s request is minimal in its cost but critical in its ability to help us secure our southern border. ~The Patriot Post

How Democrats came to love 'coequal'

Back then, Democrats controlled the White House and Senate... while Republicans had recently taken control of the House with a big victory in the 2010 midterm elections. Today, Republicans control the White House and Senate, while Democrats have recently taken control of the House with a big victory in the 2018 midterm elections. It's the same situation, essentially. But today there is a vastly different public conversation about the balance of power in government. These days, we are often reminded that Congress is a coequal branch of government, and therefore, Speaker Nancy Pulosi, D-Calif., stands on an even level with President Trump. Back in 2011, when the two players were Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and President Barack scumbag/liar-nObama, there wasn't as much of that kind of talk. A comparison, from the Nexis database of newspapers, magazines, websites, and television transcripts: From Election Day 2010 until Jan. 20, 2011, there were 18 mentions of "Boehner" and "coequal." From Election Day 2018 until Jan. 20, 2019, there were 683 mentions of "Pulosi" and "coequal."Democrats have been saying it every day, starting with Pulosi the morning after the election. Congress' role is "not to be a rubberstamp, but a coequal branch," she said, adding that she and her colleagues had a "responsibility for oversight as an independent, coequal branch." Pulosi said much the same many more times by Jan. 3, when she officially won the speaker's gavel. In her first speech on the House floor, she said, "The legislative branch is Article I: the first branch of government, coequal to the president and judiciary."... She needs to read the constitution not what she feels or thanks.

A few weeks ago, she took a run at a Trump judicial nominee for that high offense, treating him as the moral equivalent of a KKK member. It appears that lowlife-Harris and her colleague Dianne Fein-stein are in a competition to see who can strike a greater blow for anti-Catholic bigotry. While Fein-stein worries about the “dogma living loudly” within Catholic judicial nominees, lowlife-Harris wanted to know if Brian Buescher was “aware that the Knights of Columbus opposed a woman’s right to choose when you joined the organization.” For lowlife-Kamala Harris, the only good Catholic is a bad one. But of course she has received almost no flak for her open display of anti-Catholic bigotry. {tommclaughlin.blogspot.com} ~ Men aren’t doing well here in the 21st century. Male life expectancy has always been lower than that of females by about five years but lately, it is declining further. Researchers cite what they call “deaths of despair” in non-college-educated white men aged 45-54. “The mortality rate for that group… increased by a half percent each year from 1999 to 2013,” according to NPR, mostly because of suicide, drugs, and alcohol, yet progressives insist men should renounce their “white male privilege.” It would appear that white men are feeling anything but privileged.

Fifty years ago, 60% of those with bachelor’s degrees were men. Today the reverse is true. Boys are behind girls in primary and secondary schools as well and according to a 2002 60 Minutes report they’ve been falling behind for along time. Increasingly, boys simply don’t like school. For many parents, it’s a fight to get their sons to school every morning.

During my teaching career, it was clear that the culture of most public school classrooms suited girls much more than boys, many of whom found it confining and restrictive. They needed more active, hands-on activities such as a vocational school environment would provide. Unfortunately, those were reserved for high school boys only — by which time many had developed profoundly negative feelings about school and themselves that were very hard to penetrate.

Men who do go to college might be considered part of a “rape culture,” especially white men. Ask the Duke Lacrosse team. Ask the University of Virginia’s Phi Kappa Psi fraternity about “rape culture.” With no evidence, and only on the word of a single woman in each case, two large universities made these young men’s lives hell because both institutions denied the men any presumption of innocence and automatically assumed the worst. The same phenomenon led to the Kavanaugh Hearings debacle.

This is not to deny that a lot of men behave abominably toward women and always have. Such men have little or nocontrol over their sexual urges and don’t think they need to either, no matter who is hurt by their actions. Relatively recent laws against sexual harassment were much needed and overdue, but presumption of innocence and due process must be enforced at all times.

Last week’s news included articles on “toxic masculinity” and a Gillette commercial titled: “Is This The Best A Man Can Get?” Several conservative pundits objected but I saw little problem with it. It dramatized examples of men and boys bullying others and disrespecting women, but also of good men speaking up and acting to intervene.

Conspicuous by its absence in any of this was the plague of pornography to which so many men and boys have become addicted, and which contributes enormously to the dehumanization of women. That scourge was never mentioned.

At the March For Life

Last weekend there were two women’s marches in Washington. Friday saw the 44th March for Life. It was attended by a hundred thousand or more conservative women and a few men marching against abortion. Saturday it was the 3rd annual Women’s March with liberal women and many themes: Mostly it was a march against President Trump because the 1st march occurred the day after his inauguration. Second to that was a pro-abortion theme. Then there were climate change, black lives matter, and an anti-male theme. One sign called for the extinction of old white men.

Numbers were down at the Women’s March after a controversy over anti-Semitism — especially that of Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam. One of the March’s organizers, Tamika Mallory, has a close association with Farrakhan and refused to denounce his Anti-Semitic statements. Ironically, it was Farrakhan who organized the Million Man March which drew more than 400,000 in 2005 and pushed themes of black unity, personal responsibility, and respect for black women — all good things it would seem. Anti-semitic remarks by Women’s March organizer Linda Sarsour, a Palestinian Muslim, drove down numbers as well.

Meanwhile, $4.4 million in taxpayer money funded an American Psychological Association study that purports to define “traditional masculinity” and especially what it sees as negative aspects of it. Psychologists from Clark University and other institutions contributed to the "First-Ever Guidelines for Practice with Men and Boys," which includes, for example, a "Male Role Norms Inventory-Short Form” by former APA President Ronald Levant — an analysis of how much “toxic masculinity” men have as determined by questions like: “Do you think men should be macho, or do you lean more to the metrosexual?” That is the highlighted question on his web site.

Levant discounts biological differences between men and women, believing masculinity is entirely a social construct. I suspect that when men learn more about the APA’s new guidelines, even fewer will seek counseling from guys like Levant. They’d rather kill themselves.

They claim to disagree with his crass anti-Jewish and anti-gay and anti-feminist preaching -- although there is reason to doubt this, as it relates to Jews -- but they admire him for his impact on elements of the Black community. They must understand that this impact includes influencing hundreds of thousands of Blacks to consider Jews to be "termites" and destroyers of the world. But they do not care. They regard him as great — Mallory has called him "the GOAT" ("Greatest of All Time"). Marching with these supporters of an anti-Semite is the equivalent of marching under the banner of David Duke, who inspires white supremacists with the same sort of bigotry with which Farrakhan preaches Black supremacy. Hitler inspired pride in Aryans, Mussolini made the trains run on time, and Stalin spread the wealth. But would the women who marched with Farrakhan's admirers have marched with these bigots. What is the difference? The painful difference is that anti-Semitism is more tolerated on the hard left than other forms of racism. Moreover, anti-Semitism can mask itself as anti-Zionism -- singling out only the nation state of the Jewish people for unique opprobrium, an act which is itself a form of bigotry, although one that is acceptable on the hard left. Consider the front page story in the New York Times Sunday Review, which singled out the Palestinian issue as "one of the great moral challenges of our time" -- ignoring Syria, Ukraine, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Chechnya, Tibet, Cyprus and many far greater moral challenges, which are largely ignored by the hard left. The Palestinian issue receives center stage on the hard left, not because of how the Palestinians have been treated -- they did, after all, reject offers of statehood and the end of the occupation on numerous occasions -- but because of who is allegedly oppressing them: namely the nation state of the Jewish people...

According to Syrian state media, there were “consecutive waves of guided missiles”… Syrian state media cited a Syrian military source as saying Israel launched an “intense attack through consecutive waves of guided missiles”, but that Syrian air defenses destroyed most of the “hostile targets”. by Nate Jackson: El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico, are neighboring cities separated only by a border wall. Juarez is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. El Paso has a low crime rate. The only thing separating the violence from the nonviolence is a border wall.

Now Texas congresswoman Veronica Escobar, who replaced Beto O'Rourke, thinks that wall should come down. “We know that walls don’t work, that they don’t stop drugs, that they don’t stop migration.” But when asked if she would tear down that wall, she responded, “You know I, I, it’s, it’s really ugly. It, it, it is I think a monument to division.” Yeah, division between violence and non-violence.
Former Border Patrol chief Mark Morgan, who we quoted last week as supporting the wall, lives in El Paso. “I see a lot of the pundits talking and they have never been to the border, and they never talk to the experts, and they’re absolutely dismissing the facts,” said Morgan.
“Wall work,” he asserts. “If you saw the previous caravans, what stopped them? What stopped them was a multi-layered strategy that the Border Patrol has been using for decades, and they say they need now. And that’s that trifecta of infrastructure, technology, and personnel.”

This came to mind when I read the following about President Trump by a little old lady named George Will: By his comportment, the president benefits his media detractors with serial vindications of their disparagements.… For most Americans, President Trump’s expostulations are audible wallpaper, always there but not really noticed.… And as balm for his base, which remains oblivious to his likely contempt for them as sheep who can be effortlessly gulled by preposterous fictions. Will contends that Trump’s “deportment” is what drives the abuse and lies to which the President is subjected by the frauds of the Fourth Estate. Likewise, Grant’s exaggerated drinking was an excuse the northern press employed to denounce his tactics during the Civil War, as well as the necessity, when he was President, to keep troops stationed in the southern states. A CBS instant poll showed: 97% of Republicans liked it; 72% of independents; and 43% of Democrats. 80% stated they believed the President was trying to unite the country rather than divide it. When the TV cameras panned the audience, the Democrats, as Wayne Allyn Root observed in his report, “The Night the Democratic Party Committed Political Suicide,” “frowned, grimaced, groaned and looked sick to their stomachs” when they heard the President report on huge job creation over the year, jobs in manufacturing, jobs in construction, lowest employment ever among African Americans, lowest employment ever among Hispanics, lowest employment in 18 years for women. “Democrats were outed as the party that is rooting for America’s failure.” The Democrats were so anti-Trump, they evidenced no sympathy for a couple in the gallery who were victims of MS-13 gang violence — the murder of an American in their own country by illegal aliens. Dems' $15 Minimum Wage = Two Million Lost Jobs

by Political Editors: Congressional Democrats rolled out their latest vote-fishing and yet economy-crippling legislative proposal Wednesday — a nationwide minimum wage of $15 an hour to be fully implemented by 2024. With the announcement, Speaker Nancy Pulosi opined, “A $15 federal minimum wage affirms the bedrock idea of fairness in our country: that hard work deserves a decent wage.”

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) declared, “When we put money in the pockets of American workers, they spend that money in their communities. So this bill will stimulate the economy on main street.” Scott failed to elaborate on who the “we” is that he’s referring to, but it’s a good bet he wasn’t talking about business owners who pay wages. Instead, he was no doubt referencing himself and Democrats, given the party’s long history of believing that the government, not private citizens working in a free-market economy, is responsible for producing wealth.
Naturally, socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders voiced his support for the Demo legislation: “We are living today in an American economy that is doing very well for the people on top. Not so well for working families.” Clearly, Sanders has been ignoring the reality on the ground, as both jobs numbers as well as wages have been rising precisely because taxes have been cut for everyone and government has gotten out of the way. Funny how the government taking less of people’s hard-earned money actually works to stimulate more economic growth, as opposed to any government-run wealth-redistribution scheme. But admitting that reality would be self-defeating for Democrats, who believe that government’s job is to control everyone.
Speaking of controlling, Prof. David Macpherson, chairman of Trinity University’s economics department, found that, based on the Congressional Budget Office methodology, implementing a federal $15 minimum wage would lead to the loss of two million jobs, with small businesses suffering the most. In fact, those who would be most negatively affected by the minimum wage hike would be the poor and the young. In other words, it would do exactly the opposite of what Democrats are currently claiming. It would also serve to slow much of the economic progress the nation has experienced under a particular president they detest so much. ~The Patriot Post

O'Rourke's Coming Constitutional Crisis

by Michael Swartz: While Robert “Beto” O'Rourke is regularly in the news, it’s interesting to hear these particular words from him: “I trust the wisdom of people. And I’m confident — especially after having traveled Texas for two years — people are good, fundamentally, and if given the choice to do the right thing, they will; to do the good thing, they will.”

O'Rourke may or may not be running for president in 2020, but we can be certain that neither his previous comments on the “exhaustion” of the Constitution nor his favored “progressive” policies square with that bit about trusting people to do the right thing. Naturally, conservatives have had a field day criticizing Beto’s notion that the Constitution is an outdated document, but they’re also giving some thought to the state of our government and whether it’s even trying to keep the checks and balances that were designed into it. For example, Congress has repeatedly ceded authority to the president because it’s easier than taking tough votes.
Is congressional oversight really a thing of the past? For the cynic, perhaps so. Even the progressive Left gets it. This passage comes from one of their political bibles, the Indivisible Guide:

Constant reelection pressure means that MoCs [members of Congress] are enormously sensitive to their image in the district or state, and they will work very hard to avoid signs of public dissent or disapproval. What every MoC wants — regardless of party — is for his or her constituents to agree with the following narrative: “My MoC cares about me, shares my values, and is working hard for me.” [Emphasis added.]

Our nation came into being because men with deep foresight and a love of Liberty wanted to live their lives free from tyranny. They carefully set up a government with three co-equal parts in the hope that this would maintain a balance and keep one branch from dominating. But that freedom came with the vital responsibilities of diligence and morality, and as we became ever further removed from the generation that founded our nation, we backslid away from those twin supports. “It’s not my job” practically became the national mantra.
In the case of Congress, it meant figuring out ways not to have to take unpopular votes — and risking electoral defeat — by delegating its authority. Something had to fill the vacuum, and ambitious progressive chief executives have too often been happy to do so, winning elections on the emotional appeal of promising a life of ease to those who didn’t mind ceding just a little bit more of their freedom and fortune in the process.
Perhaps the earliest example of this was President Woodrow Wilson, whose election in 1912 (by a mere plurality of the vote thanks to a Republican Party torn between its own Roosevelt progressives and its Taft conservatives) ushered in a plethora of radical changes in the form and powers of government. In Wilson’s first term, the Constitution was changed to allow for taxation of income and direct election of senators, and the Federal Reserve was formed. Wilson’s second term brought with it Prohibition and women’s suffrage. All those changes, enacted within an eight-year period, permanently altered the direction of the American republic and set the stage for a century of eroded Liberty by way of, among other things, the New Deal, the Great Society, and scumbag/liar-nObamaCare.
Some might call what Wilson began “fundamental change,” but the problem with its evolution from Wilson to Barack scumbag/liar-nObama is something we’ve addressed before: “If you believe government has whatever power it desires and is the answer to every problem, as scumbag/liar-nObama clearly does, you should at least competently run it. Instead, systemic bureaucratic corruption and craven political considerations rule the day.” Career bureaucrats have thus jettisoned the Rule of Law for the rule of men.
Those who — perhaps naively — believed the days of incompetent progressive government were over when Donald Trump rolled into town have certainly been disappointed with his lack of progress in draining the Swamp. Surely many of those Trump believers were also confident the Tea Party would restore the vision of our Founding Fathers based on a single election only to be disappointed by the buck-passing excuse that their House majority only gave them control of one-half of one-third of the government. But that House majority added the Senate four years later and grabbed the White House in 2016.
So, the good people thought, finally, all the pieces are in place for reform that would restore our constitutional republic. But then the goalposts were moved again. The Republicans, we were told, would need 60 votes in the Senate to override Democrat obstructionism. And then came the 2018 midterms.
Given those grim electoral results, one might wonder whether the people even want a constitutional republic. In the midst of the 2017 scumbag/liar-nObamaCare battle, writer W. James Antle pointed out an inconvenient truth about modern America: “In practice, the American people want a much bigger federal government than the Constitution currently authorizes. Not long ago, a conservative wag quipped that if a president actually tried to enforce the Constitution’s limits on federal power, he or she would be impeached.”
On Jan. 3, 2019, articles of impeachment against President Trump were introduced in Congress. While it’s claimed that the impeachable offense is obstruction of justice, the reality is that Trump was obstructing the transfer of power to the unelected bureaucrats amassing their fiefdoms and making their favored friends wealthy on the backs of the long-suffering taxpayer. It’s a process that results in a few well-connected “haves” lording it over the many hapless “have-nots.”
If power is ceded to the unelected few, or if differences in philosophy become so great as to be irreconcilable, the last resort becomes violent revolution — and our nation has already tried that, twice. The harder and more necessary responsibility is for good people to demand that their elected representatives return to honoring their oaths of office and abiding by our foundational documents. The Kentucky Republican’s move to bring the deal up for a vote will put political pressure on Democrats in both chambers, who through their leaders publicly rejected Trump’s proposal Saturday afternoon. It would take 60 votes to advance the measure in the Senate, which means Republicans will need the support of seven Democrats to pass the measure, assuming no GOP lawmakers vote against it. The shutdown has increasingly hurt the operations of dozens of partially closed federal agencies and has left 800,000 federal workers without paychecks. “I intend to move to this legislation this week,” McConnell said in a statement after Trump’s announcement. “With bipartisan cooperation, the Senate can send a bill to the House quickly so that they can take action as well. The situation for furloughed employees isn’t getting any brighter and the crisis at the border isn’t improved by show votes. But the President’s plan is a path toward addressing both issues quickly.”...

In fact, in 2012 – just "a few days after Gaza-based Hamas terrorists had launched more than 150 deadly rockets into the Jewish state, prompting an Israeli military response – she tweeted that 'the apartheid Israeli regime' had 'hypnotized the world' in order to conceal its own 'evil doings.'" In fact, the only apartheid in the Middle East comes from Arab countries and is clearly documented by Muslim reporter Khaled Abu Toameh, who regularly highlights the Arab apartheid against Palestinians. Furthermore, "in 2016, Omar stated that she was in favor of completely divesting the University of Minnesota of its Israel bonds. The following year, she opposed a bill designed to counter economic boycotts targeting the Jewish state." In addition, "in 2018, Omar ran for the U.S. House of Representatives seat formerly held by scumbag-Keith Ellison. Her campaign was supported by ... the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which held three fundraising events on Omar's behalf."... DNC Quietly Dumps Women's March

by Jordan Candler: The Democratic National Committee (DNC) finally purged the Women’s March from its ranks — but only because the political optics had made the action unavoidable.

National Review’s Jack Crowe says that the DNC “has joined a number of prominent progressive advocacy groups in withdrawing its support for the Women’s March in the wake of reports detailing anti-Semitic conspiracy-mongering and support for notorious bigot Louis Farrakhan among its leadership.” This year’s Women’s March will occur Saturday in DC, but with relatively meager support.
“The list includes fewer than half of the 500 sponsors who supported the march last year,” Crowe reveals, “and many of the most prominent past supporters, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, Emily’s List, and NARAL, are among the defectors. The DNC was initially listed as a sponsor when the list went up on Sunday but it, along with the NAACP and the National Organization for Women, were removed at some point thereafter. The DNC’s withdrawal came after Women’s March co-chair Tamika Mallory defended her past description of Farrakhan as the ‘GOAT’ or ‘greatest of all time’ during a Monday morning appearance on ABC’s The View.”
Farrakhan, of course, would love nothing more than to exterminate the Jews, whom he considers to be insects. As recently as October, he groused, “You know what [my foes] do: call me an anti-Semite. Stop it! I’m anti-Termite.” This prompted even Chelsea scumbag/liar-Clinton to fire back, “Comparing Jews to termites is anti-Semitic, wrong and dangerous.” According to The Washington Free Beacon, “He has also attacked ‘that Satanic Jew,’ called Jews ‘the mother and father of apartheid,’ and said that ‘when you want something in this world, the Jew holds the door.’”
Tellingly, the entire Women’s March leadership is composed of bigots. As our Nate Jackson reported in November, “Theresa Shook, founder of the Women’s March, called for Bob Bland, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, and Carmen Perez of Women’s March, Inc. to step down because they ‘have steered the Movement away from its true course.’” All this and more eventually forced the DNC’s hand. And while it made the right decision not to sponsor the March, it had nothing to do with morality or conscience. This was all about damage control.
Ironically, while the Women’s March takes place tomorrow, a far larger and more endearing event is happening today in DC — the March for Life. These gatherings occurred back to back last year as well. As we wrote at the time, “One side features love and science. The other has distorted those things beyond recognition.” This year is no different. Nor will the media coverage be any different. And at least one survey that asks about the congressional GOP’s responsibility for the shutdown, independently of Trump, shows that the public might give them a pass this time. A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted Jan. 9-11 questioned 1,470 adults about who they believe is responsible for the standoff and government closures. Only 3 percent blamed congressional Republicans. A plurality blamed Trump (47 percent) and 30 percent blamed Democrats in the CBS/YouGov survey, while 20 percent blamed “all equally” for the mess. “Polls show the bulk of the blame falls on Trump, and not Republicans in Congress,” Ron Faucheux, president of Clarus Research Group, a polling and research firm, told the Washington Examiner... Trump, Cohen, and the 'Russian Deal

by Mark Alexander: There is more trouble in Trumpville this week — more fallout from the scumbag/liar-Clinton/Demo Party collusion to set up Donald Trump for a post-election takedown.

Regarding dirty cop-Robert Mueller’s investigation and the convictions of Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, I wrote last August that the investigation doesn’t “have anything to do with ‘Russian collusion,’ but the worms are out, and in the case of Cohen, so much for ‘lawyer-client privilege.’ … As his former attorney, Cohen knows where, on Trump’s behalf, he hid corporate and personal legal skeletons.”
To date, Trump’s Cohen problem has centered on campaign-finance issues. But in late November, when it became clear that Cohen’s plea deal included perjury charges related to his congressional testimony about the timing of discussions about a future Russian building project, there were questions about why Cohen would lie about the timing.
A report broke last night that Cohen lied at Trump’s direction. According to the Washington Examiner’s Timothy Carney, “President Trump now stands accused of directing his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress about Trump’s attempt to court Vladimir Putin during the campaign and build a hotel in Moscow.”
During his presidential primary campaign, Trump asserted that he had no “business” in Russia at the time. It can be argued that it was fair enough for Trump to make that claim, because an ongoing conversation about the prospect of a future project does not constitute “business” in the present, as if Trump owned a property in Russia at the time. Trump has admitted he had conversations with Russia about a project.
However, given that Cohen admitted to lying to Congress about when the 2016 discussions regarding a potential future project in Russia ended, if there is irrefutable evidence that Trump instructed Cohen to lie to Congress about it, that does constitute suborning perjury — a serious offense. Keep an eye on this one.
That speculation notwithstanding, now that Democrats control Congress, expect to hear a renewed chorus of howls to investigate and impeach Trump. ~The Patriot Post

A Kentucky catholic school has issued an apology to a group of native Americans for “mocking” them at an event a week ago at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. but if you ask me, it is the native Americans who owe those students the apology.

According to the diocese, the students might face expulsion.

In issuing a joint statement, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School apologized and stated that they are investigating, and will take “appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.”

Naturally, liberals and the Pravda mainstream media seized on the event to scream “racism” because some of the students were wearing “Make America Great Again” hats, and their socialist collective outrage was focused on one particular student, Nick Sandmann, who stood there, smiling, as native American, Nathan Phillips, a 64-year-old man stood about six inches from the student…beating a drum, and chanting.

If all it takes for a catholic school, and their diocese to issue an apology and threaten to expel their students is an absurd claim by liberals…then it is the school and their diocese that should lose the support of their community.

Pulosi and others in her party have referred to the proposed border wall as being “immoral,” “racist” and wholly ineffective at stopping illicit cross-border traffic. However, while Pulosi may remain staunchly opposed to any sort of negotiations with Trump that would include the appropriation of taxpayer funds for border wall construction, there are signs that not everybody in her party may be quite as strong in their resistance against working with Trump on this issue. Reports had already begun to circulate in the past week that some members of the Democratic caucus were signaling an openness to granting Trump the requested funding in exchange for some unspecified liberal priority on immigration — such as a possible trade for legal status for enrollees of the scumbag/liar-nObama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — if only to bring an end to the lengthy shutdown, and now it appears that even a top House Democrat has undermined Pulosi’s obstinate refusal to negotiate by contradicting her messaging. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer appeared on Fox News‘ “Special Report” with anchor Bret Baier on Wednesday, and proceeded to suggest that border walls were, in fact, not immoral or racist, and were actually quite effective in some locations, even contradicting himself in one instance. Following some dialogue about the dust-up between Pulosi and Trump over the State of the Union address scheduled for Jan. 29, as well as the stalled negotiations over the partial government shutdown, the conversation soon shifted to focus on the proposed border wall. After a few moments, Baier played a clip of Pulosi righteously intoning that a border wall was an “immorality,” but when pressed by Baier if he agreed with that characterization, Hoyer disagreed. {city-journal.org} ~ Congresswoman commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—AOC, as she’s often now called—claims that her so-called Green New Deal will help end global warming and cure several societal ills. The effort, she concedes, will be expensive, but the dangers we face from climate change and other social problems warrant national mobilization, on the level of the Second World War. Paying for the plan, she suggested, might involve a dramatic hike in the top marginal income-tax rate—up to 70 percent. That figure shocked some, but not Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, who considers it “reasonable.” Details remain vague, but some context on the AOC plan, and on the sleight of hand that Krugman uses to support it, is revealing.

So far, the only concrete step commie-Ocasio-Cortez describes to enact the Green New Deal is the formation of a House select committee to formulate specific goals. On the environmental side, these would include, among other things, expanding renewable-energy sources until they provide 100 percent of the nation’s power; building an energy-efficient “smart grid;” upgrading every residence and industrial building in the U.S. for energy efficiency, comfort, and safety; eliminating greenhouse-gas emissions for industry and agriculture; funding “massive” investments to draw down greenhouse-gas levels; and making the United States a leader in the use and export of green technology.

To these ambitious goals, commie-Ocasio-Cortez adds a long list of social objectives: providing training and education for the energy transition, including “job guarantees at a living wage for everyone who wants one”; diversifying the economies of regions dependent on fossil-fuel extraction; helping communities most affected by pollution; protecting the “sovereign rights of tribal nations”; mitigating racial, regional, and gender-based inequalities; developing universal health-care and income-support programs; and ensuring that organized labor has a major role in all these efforts.

Achieving even a small portion of this to-do list would have enormous costs. At last count, there were some 136 million housing units in the United States. Upgrading each unit to high standards of energy efficiency would cost, conservatively, at least $10,000 per home, adding up to a total cost of $1.3 trillion. Doing the same for industrial structures would easily exceed that amount. The single-payer health-care part would cost another $3 trillion or more, annually. Stabilizing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would add another $1 trillion to $2 trillion to the price tag—and all these still only account for three items on AOC’s list.

To be fair to commie-Ocasio-Cortez, she does not downplay the costs. She did, after all, draw a parallel to World War II. She has also acknowledged that a 70 percent marginal tax rate would increase annual federal receipts by only about $225 billion—far short of what would be needed. For the rest of the cost, she would rely on debt, “printing money,” and government willingness to take an equity stake in some of the enterprises involved.

AOC’s proposals to expand government ownership and take on more debt didn’t cause much of a media stir. What did get attention was her suggestion to raise taxes on the wealthy—in part because Krugman has taken up the fight on her behalf. Krugman argues that higher taxes hurt the rich less than they hurt the non-rich, that scholarship has shown that a high marginal rate is “optimal,” and that the U.S. economy has prospered in the past with a 70 percent top rate—and, in fact, in the 1950s and early 1960s, it thrived under an even higher (92 percent) maximum rate. Krugman’s point about relative levels of pain is irrefutable but also beside the point. Of course, the rich can cope better with a higher marginal tax rate—that’s why the United States has a progressive system. The more important issue is what such a high rate would do to work incentives and business expansion and innovation. Krugman denies that higher rates would have a negative impact, but several studies either differ with him or find the answer at least ambiguous.

On the question of an “optimal” tax rate, Krugman quotes two academic studies, one by Nobel laureate Peter Diamond with Emmanuel Saez and another by David Romer and his wife Christina, former head of President scumbag/liar-nObama’s Council of Economic Advisors. The first study puts the optimal tax rate at 73 percent; the Romers say 84 percent. What Krugman fails to mention is that neither figure takes account of state and local taxes. When Diamond and Saez include these taxes in their calculations, they adjust the optimal federal rate down to 48 percent—much closer to the present maximum rate of 37 percent. The Romers don’t offer that adjustment, and their work has other problems. It concentrates on the U.S. interwar period, when a statistically insignificant number of American taxpayers were in the highest tax bracket. The authors admit that this matter may introduce biases into their conclusions, as would the number of other shocks befalling the economy at the time, such as the Great Depression. Krugman fails to mention these points as well.

Krugman and AOC play fast and loose when it comes to the country’s prosperity under high tax rates. It’s true that the United States prospered with a top rate of 70 percent and higher in the mid-twentieth century. But the tax code then included loopholes that drastically reduced the amount of income subject to those rates. All the tax cuts since then have closed those loopholes. One can forgive commie-Ocasio-Cortez for missing the difference, as she has consistently shown economic and historical ignorance, but Krugman should know better.

In the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, for instance, when the 70 percent maximum rate prevailed, taxpayers could write off all state and local taxes, with no limit—including sales taxes, licensing fees, property taxes, and income taxes. They could also write off all interest expenses without limit—on their mortgages (no matter how many), all credit-card debt, auto loans, or home-improvement loans. Imagine the benefits to a plutocrat, buying a third home or a fifth Bentley. His tax would be calculated on net income, reduced by any fees, sales, or transfer tax, as well as all the interest expenses on the mortgages or auto loans over the years. The code included dividend exclusions and generous provisions for capital-gains preferences. Taxpayers back then could shelter unlimited amounts in IRAs. Social Security payouts were tax-free, no matter how high a person’s income. Individuals could write down their taxable income through averaging provisions and transfer as much income as they liked to their children, who paid at lower rates. There was no limit to rental-loss deduction. Business losses counted against all income.

Given these breaks and loopholes, it’s no surprise that few people actually paid those high rates on much of their income. The nonprofit Tax Foundation estimates that in the 1950s, for instance, when the top statutory rate was 92 percent, the top 1 percent of taxpayers wrote off so much income that their effective average federal tax rate was about 17 percent. If our highest earners today were offered the 2019 code or the old one, they might well go for the old rules, even at a 92 percent top rate.

Defending the proposed high marginal tax rate, Krugman displays a graph showing the top tax rate mapped against economic growth—growth being strongest when the top rate was highest. But perhaps that period of high growth was driven by the low effective tax rate on the wealthy during those years of ostensibly high statutory rates. This explanation is as plausible as any other, though Krugman does not discuss how much tax the wealthy actually paid in the 1950s. Nor does he concede that economic growth rates over the last 70 years may have been affected by anything besides the movement in the top statutory tax rate.

Perhaps all the stir over AOC and Krugman matters little. The Green New Deal has no evident support from House Speaker Nancy Pulosi, or even many Democrats. Media coverage, however, has made commie-Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—and her innumerate economics—part of our national conversation.
