  The Baghdad Bob Index—Domestic Edition Strategic Commentary by Gary N. Darby, Marine Corps Combat Veteran, Law Enforcement Retiree, and Memoirist

  In an era where optics override evidence, I propose a new metric for evaluating political rhetoric: the Baghdad Bob Index. Named after Iraq’s infamous information minister who denied U.S. tanks were in Baghdad while they rolled past him, this index measures the disconnect between public statements and observable reality.

  Let’s apply it to two domestic figures: Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

  • Brandon Johnson touts crime reduction while residents endure surges in carjackings, assaults, and retail theft. His press briefings echo Baghdad Bob’s classic denialism: “There are no tanks in Baghdad!”—except the tanks are stolen Kias and Hyundais.

  • JB Pritzker paints Illinois as a beacon of equity and economic growth. Meanwhile, the state hemorrhages residents, businesses, and solvency. His speeches rival Baghdad Bob’s “We are defeating the invaders!”—as the fiscal walls crumble.

  This isn’t satire—it’s strategic diagnosis. These figures aren’t just misinformed; they’re engaged in rhetorical insulation, where narrative control trumps ground truth. Baghdad Bob did it under dictatorship. Johnson and Pritzker do it under progressive governance, often with media cover and institutional inertia.

  As a lifelong defender of the Republic, I find this dangerous. Civic amnesia, institutional rot, and narrative warfare are not just political problems—they’re operational threats. When students can’t name George Washington or recall the Gettysburg Address, and when elected officials deny the reality outside their own windows, we’re not just misled—we’re compromised.

  Let this serve as a tactical warning and a call to vigilance. The Republic deserves leaders who confront reality, not curate illusions.
