The Democratic Fork in the Road and the Woke Repudiation Imperative!-Posted on Townhall-By Josh Hammer-On March 7, 2025:

Yogi Berra, the mid-century New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher known for his pithy and often humorous life observations, once famously quipped: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." It was sound advice, perhaps, for a traveler on the go and in search of a quick meal. But the modern Democratic Party, rudderless and confused and reeling from a pitiful collective performance during Tuesday evening's presidential joint address to Congress, now confronts a fork in the road that's no joke.

On the one hand lies the path of least resistance: doubling down on the status quo -- the progressive culture-warring, woke/identity politics-driven agenda that has dominated the party ever since Barack Obama upset Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary. On the other hand lies the more difficult but ultimately more promising path: repudiation of that post-2008 legacy and a conscientious return to a politics of the prudential center. Which path Democrats choose from here will go a long way toward determining their relevance as a national political party for the foreseeable future.

Obama's shocking upset over the madam-president-in-waiting was an inflection point for the institutional trajectory of the Democratic Party. Voters rejected the cultural centrism that was a Clinton-era hallmark in favor of the "hope" and "change" promised by Obama's "coalition of the ascendant." Initially, perhaps, that may have looked like a smart bet: Obama trounced John McCain in the 2008 presidential general election. But the one-time "coalition of the ascendant" transmogrified into an identitarian and deeply off-putting "coalition of aggrieved interests." Culturally militant wokeism eventually reached its pernicious apex during Joe Biden's presidency -- which saw the first explicitly "DEI" Supreme Court justice selection (Ketanji Brown Jackson, after Biden vowed to nominate a Black woman) and a DEI vice presidential running mate (Kamala Harris, after Biden was pressured to choose a Black woman).

This version of the Democratic Party, which featured the progenitor of wokeism, Obama himself, as the leading presidential campaign trail surrogate for Harris, was thoroughly rejected in November by the American people. It turns out that voters didn't really know what they were signing up for when they embarked on an extended political journey of "hope" and "change." They weren't interested -- and aren't interested -- in legitimizing the juvenile genital mutilation and chemical castration that has been euphemistically sold as "gender-affirming care." They weren't interested -- and aren't interested -- in assenting to wide-scale importation and resettlement of foreigners whose cultures and customs are antithetical to our own.

Some leading Democrats do finally seem to get the memo. Former Clinton strategist James Carville, for instance, has called for Democrats to distance themselves from the excesses of woke civilizational arson. But many others disagree. There is no indication at all, for instance, that the ladies of "The View" have done any introspection: Shortly after November's electoral shellacking, cohost Sunny Hostin attributed Harris' loss to Donald Trump to "racism" and "misogyny." Surveying the left-of-center punditocracy scene, it often seems that there are far more Hostin-like voices of escalation than there are Carville-like voices of sobriety.

Democratic elected officials are also deeply split. California Gov. Gavin Newsom made headlines this week by repudiating certain facets of wokeism during an interview with Charlie Kirk, but congressional Democrats attending Trump's joint address to Congress on Tuesday evening took the opposite approach, beyond refusing to applaud: Rep. Al Green (D-Tex.) obnoxiously heckled the president and was kicked out of the House chamber within the speech's first few minutes -- deservedly so. In general, their conduct was positively buffoonish.

In what world do Democrats think they do themselves any political favors with these antics and, more important, these underlying substantive political stances? One guest of Trump on Tuesday, Payton McNabb, is a female former high school athlete who was grievously injured during a match against a team with a biological male player. On this issue, recent CNN polling indicates that roughly four-fifths of Americans oppose biological male participation in female athletic competitions. Even Newsom, in his podcast episode with Kirk, called the practice "deeply unfair."

Newsom seems to be reading the tea leaves -- unlike congressional Democrats. There is a similar divide on the issue of illegal immigration and so-called "sanctuary" jurisdictions; consider, for instance, New York City Mayor Eric Adams' high-profile flip on the issue, which has brought him into line with Trump.

To make matters even worse, a majority of Democratic elites too often now come across not merely as schoolmarmish and excessively self-righteous -- but as heartless and lacking compassion, to boot. Party leaders undoubtedly think of themselves as "compassionate," especially for those perceived as being "oppressed" (on the neo-Marxist intersectional scale of victimization status). But where is the compassion for McNabb? Where is the compassion for the family of Laken Riley, the Athens, Georgia, student whose life was tragically cut short by an illegal alien who never should have been on our soil?

In order to recover their standing and regain lasting relevance as an electorally feasible national political party, Democrats are going to have to repudiate the entirety of their post-2008/post-Obama cultural legacy. That is the simple truth. The American people want a stable pocketbook, a stable border and a stable world stage. They're not interested in the Obama-Biden-Harris Democratic Party's idiosyncratic conception of waging a culture war.

Are Democrats up to such a challenge? The intraparty civil war is on -- but I certainly have my doubts. Unless and until they do repudiate their cultural militance, however, Democrats will continue to flounder about in irrelevance. Perhaps they'll need to get their clocks cleaned at the ballot box a few more times. That wouldn't be the worst thing.

Back when the Democrats were a formidable political party, it was easy to identify their core constituencies, mostly because of the egregious pandering they did to get their votes. Last year's presidential election made them a little wobbly after two of those constituencies — black men and Latinos — became Trump voters. The Dem elites had relied on their voting bloc remaining intact in perpetuity, and the change in their status quo set them to spinning out of control.

They should be wrapping up a painful journey through the five stages of grief or at least be deep into it. Instead, they've set up camp in stage one: denial. That's really not a good place from which to plan a political comeback: a focused one, anyway. They've been flailing a lot, but these past few days have really been out of control.

This is from something my friend Stephen Green wrote yesterday:

It can't be easy, striving for relevance as members of a political party so far out of the mainstream that they can't even golf clap for a cancer kid getting his presidential Make a Wish moment on national TV or for the widow and daughters of a slain veteran. 

When you stand for nothing aside from looting the Treasury — any excuse will do, including chemically castrating children — and opposing the Bad Orange Man, you've got to figure out ways to distract the American public from your complete moral vacancy. 

What they did was record a video that will make you want to shower after seeing it and bleach everything in the room where you watched it. Just as with their infamously bad memes, these video attempts by the Dems to connect with the people are beyond painful. They think they're cool, though. It's like an entire political movement full of people who didn't have friends in high school. Or get good grades. 

In other "What in the hell are these people thinking?!?" news, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) continues to rack up "hold my beer" moments when it comes to stupidity. This is from my RedState colleague Rusty Weiss:

Crockett's comments surfaced during a segment for a "24-Hour State of the People Marathon," which was a protest event designed to counter the president's address to Congress earlier this week.

The livestream featured a never-ending assembly line of guests providing racially charged and provocative commentary. Crockett did not disappoint.

“As they have decided to go after immigrants and these — and things like that, and they’ve said, ‘Oh, they’ve taken your black job, they’ve taken your black jobs,'" she told viewers. "Not really, they are obviously jobs that they want us to go back to, such as work in the fields, alright?"

She seems super stable. 

In our latest episode of "Unwoke," Kevin and I talk about Jasmine Crockett's obvious attempts to try and steal the Democratic Party's mean girl crown from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. That will turn into an entertaining catfight soon. I don't think Crockett's mouth has been shut since the election. As Stephen said in his column, "if there's anything both stupid and attention-whoring going on anywhere near Congress, it's a safe bet that Crockett's fingerprints are all over it."

It's a mystery just who the Democrats think they are appealing to with these kinds of antics. OK, Crockett is obviously trying to get all of the Black voters back in line with the "work in the fields" nonsense, but she's also in the cry-for-help video. At this point, she's practically making in-kind contributions to the Republican National Committee with her antics. 

Keep barking at your reflections in the mirror, Democrats. The longer you're distracted, the better chance the country has to heal from the damage you've inflicted on it.

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) is unapologetic about his disgraceful antics during President Trump’s first joint session of Congress. He was tossed during the address, vows to file articles of impeachment against Trump, and got slapped with a censure motion yesterday. It was a shambolic proceeding, with House Democrats more inclined to put on shoddy summer stock than actual governance. We’re dealing with children who frankly need the belt:

"This is a really sad day for our institution," Johnson shared on Thursday with Fox News, reminding that what "Representative Al Green did in the midst of the president's speech, as our honored guest to the chamber, was disruptive. He did it intentionally, as everyone saw. I gave him plenty of warnings, and he refused it. It was a deliberative action, it needed to be met with swift punishment, that's the tradition of this place to maintain decorum, and that's what we just did." 

The speaker went on to mention the breakdown of the vote, 224-198-2. "I can't believe that" 198 Democrats voted against the censure motion, Johnson mentioned. "It was critically important... because we have to maintain the dignity of this place. We're the greatest deliberative body in the history of the world. There's a deep and rich tradition here, and it is violated," he continued. 

Johnson also stressed just how unprecedented that Green's outburst was. "To our understanding and to our review of history, that was the first time that any member of Congress has ever had to be removed in the middle of a president's address. And it's shameful."

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate whether former President Joe Biden’s staff exploited his mental decline to implement far-left policies, according to a letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Biden’s executive actions — including last-minute clemency grants to violent criminals and sentence commutations for death row inmates — are “legally void” if he did not give his knowing approval, Bailey wrote Tuesday in a letter to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz.

“By now, Biden’s mental decline is famous,” Bailey wrote. “Under the 25th Amendment, his inability to make decisions should have meant a succession of power. Instead, it appears staffers and officers in the Biden administration may have exploited Biden’s incapacity so they could issue orders without an accountable President of sound mind approving them.”

Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents described him as “an elderly man with a poor memory.”

Biden was not aware he signed a moratorium on energy exports to Europe when Speaker of the House Mike Johnson asked about the decision, Johnson revealed during a January interview with The Free Press.

Aides carefully controlled Biden’s schedule and took on some of his responsibilities amid his decline, the Wall Street Journal reported in December.

“I thus ask you to launch an investigation, or refer my request to another investigative body, to determine which of Biden’s purported orders were knowingly issued by a competent President and which were not,” Bailey wrote.

In his final days in office, Biden pardoned his son Hunter Biden. He pardoned several family members and issued preemptive pardons to Dr. Anthony Fauci and Gen. Mark Milley, along with members of the Jan. 6 committee, in the hours before Trump’s inauguration.

Biden’s list of 2,500 individuals convicted on drug offenses, whom he described as “non-violent” when commuting their sentences, included two men whose actions led to the death of a police officer and another who murdered an eight-year-old boy and his mother. Biden ignored recommendations made by his own DOJ when he commuted sentences for some of these violent criminals, according to an internal email reported by the WSJ in February.

On his way out, Biden also declared the Equal Rights Amendment was part of the Constitution, despite the National Archives clearly stating otherwise.

“Who has been running the country for the last few years?” Bailey wrote. “I fear that Mr. Biden, while he held the office of President, did so in name only and was a mere puppet for far-left, unelected staffers. The people deserve to know the truth.”
