NATO on Thin Ice. The Trump administration is questioning the value of NATO, given some member nations’ refusal to allow U.S. bases to be used in support of the ongoing Iran operation!-Posted on The Patriot Post-By Thomas Gallatin-On April 6, 2026:President Donald Trump is understandably frustrated with America’s European allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He repeatedly criticized NATO during his first term, primarily over the failure of most of its members to meet their defense spending obligations. Now, it’s because of foot-dragging and obstruction over Iran.

Thanks in large part to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which proved Trump’s criticism correct, NATO members have sought to meet and expand their defense spending obligations. Yet leading NATO members continue to bristle at Trump, even though his actions are in their own best interests.

The latest example of NATO’s obstinacy has come from a number of member nations, including France, Italy, and Spain, by way of objections to the joint U.S.-Israel operation against Iran. Rather than recognizing the legitimate and imminent nature of the threat that the Islamic Republic poses not only to the Middle East but to the globe, these NATO members have pointed the finger of blame at Trump and Israel.

Spain has barred U.S. bases in its territory from being used to transport supplies and troops bound for Operation Epic Fury. France wouldn’t even let the U.S. use its airspace, to which Trump responded on Truth Social, “The Country of France wouldn’t let planes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory. France has been VERY UNHELPFUL with respect to the ‘Butcher of Iran,’ who has been successfully eliminated! The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!!”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also expressed his frustration regarding America’s supposed allies in NATO, saying, “If NATO is just about us defending Europe if they’re attacked but then denying us basing rights when we need them, that’s not a very good arrangement.” Indeed.

The Strait of Hormuz is essentially closed due to Tehran’s continued willingness to attack civilian shipping. This has caused global energy prices to jump, putting downward pressure on economies worldwide, especially in Europe. NATO’s unwillingness to assist the U.S. in reopening and defending the Strait is telling.

Thus, when Trump was recently asked if he would reconsider U.S. membership in NATO following the Iran operation, his answer was unequivocal: “Oh yes, I would say beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way.”

And Trump is right: NATO’s power is almost entirely dependent on the U.S.

NATO was born during an era when Europe was struggling to rebuild from the devastation of World War II and was facing the growing communist threat from the Stalin-led Soviet Union. It made sense for the U.S., the world’s new superpower, which had come to Europe’s aid in defeating the Nazis and Imperial Japan and was lending significant economic aid, to also seek a means to counter the suddenly nuclear-armed Soviet Union. That came in the form of a military alliance of Western European nations, backed by the economic and military might of the U.S.

NATO protects Western Europe and benefits the U.S. by bolstering our national defense and expanding our military presence through numerous bases in NATO member states. These, of course, allow the U.S. military to respond rapidly to sudden threats raised against our allies and interests across Europe and beyond.

While NATO nations sought to cover some of their own defense costs, the true strength of NATO lies in the U.S. military. American taxpayers have long footed the bill for NATO, doing so not only for Europe’s benefit but also for our own.

The trouble is that, following the end of the Cold War, many NATO nations have effectively viewed investment in their own military security as nonessential and instead invested heavily in building welfare states. In doing so, most failed to meet their military spending obligations, an issue Trump addressed during his first term.

However, even as NATO has expanded over the years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has, ironically, also lost respect for and appreciation of the one superpower that has upheld and ensured the alliance’s enduring strength since its founding. If the U.S. had never proposed and invested in NATO, would Western Europeans be speaking Russian today?

Therefore, given this latest obstinacy from America’s supposed NATO allies, a reevaluation of the U.S.‘s membership in the alliance is entirely reasonable and necessary. What good is it for the U.S. to have military bases within NATO countries if we are not permitted to use them for our own military interests? As Secretary of War Pete Hegseth observed, “You don’t have much of an alliance if you have countries that are not willing to stand with you when you need them.”

The question of whether Trump would have the authority to unilaterally withdraw the U.S. from NATO is not really the issue. That can be debated, and any action he takes would obviously be challenged. The point is that Trump is effectively sending a message to NATO nations: If they refuse to act like allies, then they shouldn’t look to the U.S. to have their backs should Russia or some other unforeseen enemy come knocking.

A massive search-and-rescue operation commenced, leading to another aircraft, an A-10 Warthog, taking fire and ditching in the Persian Gulf. That pilot was safely rescued.

“U.S. forces rescued an American aviator trapped in Iran in a daring mission early Sunday morning, according to two U.S. officials. The crew member had been stuck in Iran for more than 24 hours. A specialized commando force extracted the crew member with the help of air cover, one of the officials said. 

All forces involved in the rescue are safely out of Iranian airspace, according to the officials. The aviator, who has not yet been identified, was one of two aircrew flying in an F-15E Strike Eagle when it was shot down by Iranian forces on Friday. 

A U.S. military team rescued the other crew member on Friday and that person is now safe. The rescue comes less than two days before President Trump’s deadline for Iran to negotiate a deal with the United States or open the Strait of Hormuz.” 

From CBS News:

“The downing of the F-15E fighter jet marks the first time a U.S. fighter jet has been shot down in combat in over 20 years, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot, told The Associated Press. 

At least four U.S. fighter jets have been shot down since the Iran war began on Feb. 28, but three of those were in a friendly-fire incident, the Pentagon said. On March 1, three American F-15s were "mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses," U.S. Central Command said at the time, and there were no casualties from that incident.  

CBS News national security analyst Aaron MacLean on Friday provided insight on how the search and rescue operation for the missing F-15E crew member might play out, explaining the U.S. military uses highly trained forces known as Air Force Pararescuemen who are "dedicated" for such missions.

The missing crew member would have had first-aid gear and "training in how to administer self-care in case they're injured," MacLean explained, and would be equipped with communications gear to "let their chain of command know that they are OK, and ideally participate in their own rescue."

“Finding the downed airman, who had been hiding with little more than a pistol as defense, had been the U.S. military’s highest priority over the last 48 hours.

The mission to save the crew member employed hundreds of special forces troops, dozens of U.S. warplanes, helicopters, and cyber, space and other intelligence capabilities. 

U.S. attack aircraft dropped bombs and opened fire on Iranian convoys to keep them away from the area where the airman was hiding. As U.S. forces converged on the downed airman, a firefight erupted, two former senior military officials briefed on the operation said. 

The airman was equipped with a beacon and a secure communication device for coordinating with forces mounting the rescue. 

A senior U.S. military official described the mission to rescue the airman as one of the most challenging and complex in the history of U.S. special operations. 

In a final twist after the weapons officer was rescued, two transport planes that would carry the commandos and the airmen to safety got stuck at a remote base in Iran. Commanders decided to fly in three new planes to extract all the U.S. military personnel and the airmen, and they blew up the two disabled planes rather than have them fall into Iranian hands. 

The F-15E fighter jet was shot down in a region of Iran where there is significant opposition to the Iranian government As a result, the airman may have been able to rely on locals for shelter and assistance. 

The crash also drew the attention of Iranian military forces, who were reported to have been scouring the area. The Iranian government asked locals for help finding the downed airman, and had offered a reward for the airman’s capture.

Vast mountains deep inside enemy territory and only a pistol: that is all this injured US airman had for survival before he was rescued in a daring mission on Sunday.

Extracted by US special forces before he was captured by Iranian forces, the still unidentified weapons systems officer’s rescue mission went on for 36 hours across the rugged Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province in southwest Iran.

According to reports, this “highly respected colonel" — as hailed by President Donald Trump — survived by hiding in the mountains. Trump has called his rescue the “most daring search and rescue operations in US history".

As details of the operation emerge, his survival is now being painted as extraordinary followed by a sophisticated intelligence deception to enable his rescue.

WHAT WENT DOWN?

On April 3, when an advanced F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was downed by a ground-launched projectile, one pilot was reportedly rescued soon after the crash but the second crew member remained missing.

The F-15E uses a CKU-5 rocket propellant system to blast the airman’s seat through the canopy at a staggering 200 metres per second squared. While sophisticated, this system carries a high probability of spinal fractures and other severe injuries.

American officials said the airman was indeed wounded following his ejection but remained capable of walking and, for 36 hours, he disappeared into the mountains. Armed with only a standard-issue pistol and, perhaps, a flare, his survival depended on his SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape) training.

All US aviators are equipped with a combat vest containing a radio/GPS-coded beacon, minimal food and water, and first-aid material, but in terms of defence, he was almost entirely vulnerable while being “hunted down" by Iranian forces closing in “by the hour".

HOW DID HE SURVIVE?

The Telegraph reported that the US airman’s survival depended on who found him first: his own side or the other side.

Realising the immense value of capturing him alive, Iranian authorities urged local tribesmen and citizens to join security forces in combing the countryside and even offering a reward for his discovery. Social media footage appeared to show dozens of local residents rising to the challenge, searching the arid, mountainous terrain where he was believed to be hiding.

But he managed to evade them all by hiding within a mountain crevice. Later, despite being injured, he hiked up a 7,000-foot ridgeline to reach a position where extraction might be possible.

HOW WAS HE RESCUED?

The Telegraph said while the US airman navigated the physical terrain, the CIA was tracking him to provide the rescue teams with the necessary window of opportunity.

The report said the CIA launched a sophisticated “deception campaign", designed to mislead Iranian authorities into believing he had already been located or recovered in a different area. The feint proved successful, allowing the White House and Pentagon to maintain an “uncharacteristic silence" while the real rescue operation took place.

It said behind the scenes, President Trump remained in the Oval Office receiving constant updates on the airman’s status as the rescue force prepared to cross the border. The final extraction was anything but quiet and involved “dozens of aircraft" and hundreds of special operations troops, spearheaded by the elite Navy SEAL Team 6 – the same unit famed for the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden.

To protect the “extraction zone", The Telegraph reported, the US military established a massive air corridor as MQ-9 Reaper drones and fast jets circled overhead providing a shield for the special forces. These assets were authorised to use “overwhelming firepower", striking any military-aged person deemed a threat within a 3-km radius of the operation.

The final moments of the rescue were reportedly a scene of intense combat. As the airman broke cover to meet the rescue team, US forces dropped bombs and opened fire on approaching Iranian military convoys. A firefight erupted but he was successfully loaded onto a transport plane.

Are U.S. troops ready to face Iranian drone swarm attacks?-Posted on The Washington Times-By Ben Wolfgang and John T. Seward, The Washington Times-On April 4, 2026:

Ground operations in Iran could put U.S. forces directly in the crosshairs of Iranian drone swarms at a moment when American troops may not have the equipment needed to handle the threat, former defense officials and military analysts say.

Unlike Russian, Ukrainian and even North Korean troops, all of whom have faced down modern drone swarms in Eastern Europe over the last four years, U.S. ground forces have never confronted live enemy drones at scale on the battlefield.

Many of the Pentagon’s most promising counter-drone technologies — from microwaves to lasers and other directed energy weapons — also haven’t had much real-world battlefield experience, raising the prospect of significant U.S. casualties from Iranian drone attacks.

U.S. forces have surged into the Middle East in recent days, even as President Trump has pushed a message that Operation Epic Fury, the U.S. campaign against Iran, is nearing completion.

Significant detachments of U.S. ground troops may be tasked with seizing key Iranian energy infrastructure sites such as Kharg Island, smaller islands in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

American ground forces may also be ordered to remove Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium at locations across the country.

Each of those possible U.S. missions carries major risks, as it’s virtually guaranteed that Iran would respond to any ground incursions by launching waves of drone assaults. 

“If you go ashore, there’s clearly risk to force in the new warfare,” says Mark Montgomery, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Since the war began more than a month ago, Iran has used its drones to target missile radars, planes on airfields and command and control centers across the Persian Gulf that weren’t yet prepared to handle the threat.

Mr. Montgomery, a retired Navy rear admiral and former policy director for the Senate Armed Services Committee, told the April 3 episode of The Washington Times’ Threat Status podcast that U.S. forces may not be entirely ready either. 

“We were not ready for long-range drones, Shaheds,” he said, referring to Iran’s highly effective Shahed drones, which come in several models ranging dramatically in size and range, with the Shahed 136 boasting a range of well over 2,000 miles. 

The biggest problems would likely be Iran’s slate of “suicide” drones that are often deployed in swarms and have proven difficult to counter.

Mr. Montgomery said he fears the U.S. is not fully ready to counter suicide drone attacks in large numbers on the battlefield.

The one-way attack drones have become the norm in modern conflict, with the Russia-Ukraine war highlighting their capability. Iran was an early adopter of the new method of war, switching to bombardments of much cheaper, directed glide-bomb style drones that can be produced quickly and at scale. 

Despite massive investments in promising counter-drone technology, the U.S. and its Gulf allies have, over the past five weeks, relied heavily on traditional, expensive munitions to counter cheap drones.

It’s not entirely clear what specific counter-drone capabilities would be deployed directly with individual ground units operating deep inside Iranian territory. 

‘A disaster waiting to happen’

The Trump administration has cast its recent military action in Venezuela, during which U.S. special forces captured then-Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as a model for modern operations.

But that mission, which the administration called an overwhelming success, was over in less than three hours. 

Any operation in Iran would be more difficult, analysts say, because troops would have to take and hold terrain for days, perhaps even weeks. That would give the Iranian military time to scout positions, identify any weaknesses in American capabilities and plan waves of drone attacks against U.S. troops.

“If they’ve got 100 Shaheds coming at them, how are they going to deal with that?” said Jim Townsend, former deputy assistant secretary of defense for European and NATO policy.

“If they let 10 of them through, it will cause mass casualties. It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Mr. Townsend, now a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, told The Times in an interview. “The percentage of this going really well is about 10%.”

That description, while a hypothetical, is already a worst-case scenario that’s played out on a battlefield some 1,400 miles northwest of Iran.

In Ukraine, drone swarms have become a coordinated option to destroy a target.

Mr. Townsend pointed to videos that have circulated on social media in recent years showing North Korean troops, who fought alongside Russian forces, running from Ukrainian drone swarm attacks.

Those North Korean units appeared to have not been trained to deal with the threat and lacked the necessary counter-drone capabilities to combat it. 

“The nightmare is the photos of the North Koreans when they first had to deal with drone swarms [in Ukraine],” Mr. Townsend said. “Running and turning to shoot at them while they’re being hunted down by the drones. That’s what we’d be facing: U.S. Marines being chased by drones.”

The U.S. and Israel have aggressively targeted Iran’s drone stockpiles over the past five weeks. It’s unclear how badly degraded Iran’s drone capabilities truly are, but before the conflict, the Islamic republic was the region’s leader in the field.

A 2024 U.S. Institute of Peace analysis said that Iran had at least 10 different models of suicide drone in its arsenal.

Relatively small models, such as the long-range Shahed 136, can carry about 100 pounds of explosives. One of the smallest, the Meraj-521, carries only 6 pounds of explosives but is tough to shoot down because of its small size and quiet motor. Some of the largest models, such as Iran’s Arash series, can carry nearly 600 pounds of explosives and travel over 1,200 miles.

Tehran produced those drones by the thousands. Its models were so effective that Russia relied on them heavily for its war in Ukraine and now produces its own versions of the Shahed inside Russia. 

Iran also has another dozen combat and surveillance drones models, including its Shahed 149, which can reportedly carry up to 12 precision-guided bombs. 

Weighing the risks


One government official who spoke on condition of anonymity with The Times said
Mr. Trump has been briefed on casualty projections for different ground operations in the region.

Analysts outside the government say the potential for U.S. casualties is a major concern for the administration.

Jonathan Hackett, a former special operations capabilities specialist and Marine, now a military special operations analyst, notes the complexity of a possible mission to take Kharg Island, the main island port for 90% of Iran’s oil export business.

In an interview, Mr. Hackett pointed to how much manpower would be at risk.

Both of the Marine Expeditionary Units currently in the region, as well as major elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne, would be needed to take the island, he said. 

The catch is that the Marine units are not designed for sustained operations holding territory. And analysts do not believe the units currently have equipment that would enable them to protect themselves against drone swarms.



“Once you touch the beachhead, you’re a fixed point, for artillery, for any kind of close and direct fire or these modern weapons,” said Mr. Hackett. “Completely exposed.”

Controlling any operations in the air would, in theory, decrease that risk. 

But that could be difficult.

On the Threat Status podcast, Mr. Montgomery said a ground operation would effectively end the broader air campaign against Iran and would instead force the U.S. to focus most of its assets on protecting the ground troops.

Furthermore, the use of troops would push assets toward a single fixed point amid an already dangerous fight in the sky, as evidenced by Iran’s recent downing of a U.S. F-15E fighter jet.

“If you put troops ashore, I don’t think people understand that with the current buildup size we’re at, that would pull the airpower and maritime power to wherever those forces were,” said Mr. Montgomery. “It would become the only line of effort. And we’re supposedly working five or six lines of effort right now.”

Countering Iranian missiles, destroying drone manufacturing facilities, destroying air defense capabilities, strikes on Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps leadership and nuclear facilities — all of those could immediately take a backseat to protecting U.S. personnel.

Such calculations are under deliberation at the highest levels of the U.S. government.

“Is the U.S. domestically willing to accept that level of sacrifice to open up an oil strait that they force-closed themselves?” asked Mr. Hackett, referring to the Strait of Hormuz. “That’s a very important question that the president is trying to go through right now.”

Michael Knights, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy who has spent decades studying the region, said any option that would tie U.S. troops to the landscape could become disastrous.

Even if the U.S. were able to spread across much of the Iranian coastline, they would be fighting with their backs to the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Mr. Knights described it as a potential standoff campaign, where direct engagement would favor U.S. troops, so Iran would instead use drones and missiles to harass American forces and cause sudden mass casualty events.


“The Iranians are probably smart enough to let us go sit on the southern coastline or at a nuclear facility and then bombard the s—- out of us,” Mr. Knights said. “They’re not stupid. They’re patient, cold-blooded.”

Yesterday, a US fighter jet was shot down in Iran. One pilot was rescued, but the second is still missing. The aircraft involved was an F-15. The rescue effort also ran into trouble, with an A-10 Warthog taking fire, leading to its pilot ejecting over the Persian Gulf (via CBS News): 

“A U.S. F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran on Friday, and one crew member from the plane was later rescued by American forces, U.S. officials confirmed to CBS News.   

The F-15E is flown by a two-member crew, and the search for the second crew member, a weapons system officer, is continuing, two U.S. officials said.  

The jet was shot down by Iranian forces, the officials said, and the combat rescue mission ensued shortly after. An A-10 Warthog was part of the search and rescue mission when it took fire and was damaged. The Warthog pilot ejected over the Persian Gulf and was successfully recovered, according to the officials. 

Two helicopters also took part in the search and rescue mission and successfully retrieved the F-15E pilot who had ejected, officials said. The helicopter carrying the recovered pilot was hit by small arms fire, wounding crew members on board, according to the officials, who said the helicopter landed safely. All service members are receiving initial medical treatment and will be transported for further medical care.”

The second pilot from the F-15 remains missing.

That guy is basically their Baghdad Bob, Tehran Tommy. Virtually nothing he says is true. 

After that bridge was hit, they're now threatening the bridges of the surrounding Gulf neighbors. But doing that just makes those states madder and more convinced Iran has to be stopped. It drives the neighbors closer to the U.S. So it's been a very bad strategy for Iran to run with, but they keep digging the hole deeper. 

Also in the report, the Israelis say they hit the headquarters used to finance Iran's military operation. That's going to put Iran in even more trouble economically, with a system that already had some incredible inflation and other issues. One of the reasons the people suffer is because so much money is spent on terrorist proxies, like Hamas and Hezbollah, as Fox explained.

Add that to the report we covered previously, that the Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, supposedly was worried that if they didn't make a deal soon, the economy was going to collapse. So both militarily and economically, they're not in a good place.

What Trump’s Speech Was and Wasn’t. During an address to the nation last night, our commander-in-chief told us that the end is near, but that we must also stay the course until we complete the mission!-Posted on The Patriot Post-By Douglas Andrews-On April 2, 2026:

“You have midterm elections. It shouldn’t be, but it is too often a factor. … Sometimes politics gets in the way.”

So said Joe Biden’s secretary of state, Antony Blinken, to The New York Times’s David Sanger at a Harvard forum last Tuesday.

To be clear, politics should never get in the way of our national security, but it did with the Biden administration, and the Obama administration, and every American presidential administration that kicked the Iranian nuclear can down the road during the past 47 years.

Yesterday, in a rare primetime address to the nation, President Donald Trump told the American people that the fight in Iran is winding down — that we’ve made great progress and are near to completing all of our military objectives, but that we’re not there yet. “Shortly, very shortly,” he said.

“They were right at the doorstep,” Trump said. “For years, everyone has said that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. But in the end, those are just words if you’re not willing to take action when the time comes.”

The time did come, and Donald Trump did take action. And here we are.

The president’s 20-minute speech was short on military specifics, but that makes sense, since he wanted to reassure the American people while at the same time keeping what’s left of the Iranian regime guessing. He did say, however, that more very serious pain is headed Iran’s way if a ceasefire deal can’t be reached with those who purport to be in charge of what’s left of the regime.

He also, once again, called out his predecessors in the White House, especially Barack Hussein Obama, for having paid mere lip service to the longstanding U.S. policy that Iran can never have a nuclear bomb.

Perhaps the most interesting point that he made was that the United States doesn’t need a drop of oil from the Strait of Hormuz, and he called on those who rely on oil shipped through those Straits to either buy oil from the U.S. or “build up some delayed courage” and secure that vital international waterway themselves. This in itself is a radical and welcome departure from the so-called Pottery Barn Rule — You break it, you own it — coined by The New York Times’s Thomas Friedman and adopted by former George W. Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell in the days leading up to the Iraq War.

Trump refrained from criticizing our erstwhile NATO “partners” directly, and he said in an interview yesterday that withdrawing from the NATO alliance was “beyond reconsideration.” Ultimately, though, it will likely require a coalition naval effort to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and safe for transit of oil tankers and other shipping.

It’s one thing not to help, but another thing not to even allow our planes flyover permission. Unforgivable, in my humble opinion. Article 13 exit, anyone? Why are our NATO allies behaving like such cheese-eating surrender monkeys? No doubt because, as our Mark Alexander noted at the onset of the conflict, “The UK and France have allowed so many Islamic extremists into their country that they fear any participation will result in domestic terror attacks.”

The big open question is whether victory can be declared at this point, or whether we need to secure and remove Iran’s nuclear stockpile. The president hinted at the former, saying that we’ve hit their nuclear sites hard, that we’ve got them under satellite surveillance, and that “if we see them make a move, even a move for it, we’ll hit them with missiles, very hard.”

“They were the bully of the Middle East,” said Trump, “but they’re the bully no longer.”

It’s Holy Week, by the way, and what better time to remind ourselves why it was that Donald Trump attacked Iran: namely, because the posture of prior American presidents toward Iran was wholly weak.

Oh, every American president of the past 47 years talked a good game. “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” they all announced, one right after another after another. But talk is cheap, and the mullahs knew it. And so, they kept on working, kept on enriching, kept on progressing toward a nuclear bomb.

Until Donald Trump said: No more. We’re done.

When push came to shove, only Trump dared to shove back. Indeed, he did more than shove back. He knocked Iran into next week — or was it the Stone Age?

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said, somewhat comically, that they will “fight until your eventual surrender.”

Trump paid tribute to our 13 fallen warriors, adding, “We must honor them by completing the mission.” Trump said that our Middle East allies have been great, and that what Iran is doing now in the Strait of Hormuz is just more proof that it can never be allowed to have a nuclear bomb.

Ultimately, this was a speech for many audiences, including the vast majority of the American people — those who aren’t following this war as closely as some of us, and haven’t considered too carefully what was really at stake.

In his private diary, then-President Harry S. Truman said this about the fearsome new weapon that our brilliant team at Los Alamos had developed:

We have discovered the most terrible bomb in the history of the world. It may be the fire destruction prophesied in the Euphrates Valley Era, after Noah and his fabulous Ark. Anyway, we “think” we have found a way to cause the disintegration of atom. An experiment in the New Mexican desert was startling — to put it mildly.

To put it mildly.

Of course, President Truman wasn’t there on July 16, 1945, at the Trinity blast site on a remote part of Alamogordo Air Base, 120 miles south of Albuquerque. But Robert Oppenheimer was there. Some 20 years later, Oppenheimer recalled the moment of the explosion in an NBC News documentary:

A few people laughed; a few people cried; most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. … ‘Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.’ I suppose we all thought that one way or another.

For around a decade now, Donald Trump has been saying that the Iranian regime can’t have a nuclear weapon. Just like all the presidents before him had been saying. The only difference is that Trump meant what he said, and he backed it up with force.

And we should all be grateful for it — higher gas prices and November midterms be damned.

You might not like him, you whiny, sniveling Democrats. And you might not have the onions to admit it, but you want him on that wall. You need him on that wall.

President Trump said Monday that a deal with Iran was “probably” close to winding down the conflict — but warned the US would obliterate the regime’s power plants, oil wells, and its main export hub, Kharg Island, if negotiations fell through.

Trump noted, however, that a deal was “probably” close.

“The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island.”

Kharg Island is Iran’s main export hub.

Trump said the US purposefully hadn’t touched the sites after having previously given an April 6 deadline to Iran.

“This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror’,” he said.

The renewed threat came just hours after Trump said late Sunday that the US was negotiating “directly and indirectly” with Iran.

He flagged the possibility, too, of taking Iran’s oil — a move that would require seizing Kharg Island, the terminal through which nearly all of Iran’s oil exports pass.

“Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don’t,” Trump told the Financial Times, noting that any US presence “would also mean we had to be in there for a while.”

“We have a lot of options,” he said, boasting that the US could “easily” take the island.

Trump added that the US had about 3,000 targets it would still like to hit in Iran — after having “bombed 13,000 targets” since Feb. 28 — but insisted: “A deal could be made fairly quickly.”

The president gave Tehran a 10-day deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after its closure caused oil prices to spike as much as 50%.

Tehran allowed 10 Pakistan-flagged oil tankers through the strait last week as a “present” to the White House, Trump said in his Financial Times interview, but it has since allowed 10 more, bringing the total number exiting the bottlenecked channel to 20.

On Friday, 3,500 US Marines and sailors also arrived in the Middle East on the USS Tripoli, amid a broader Pentagon order to deploy 10,000 troops to the region.

Trump has said the forces could be dispatched to secure the Strait as well as Iranian nuclear facilities.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” Monday: “They are making threats about controlling the Hormuz Strait in perpetuity, creating a tolling system and the like. That’s not going to be allowed to happen.”

“Over time, the US is going to retake control of the straits,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted on Fox News. “And there will be freedom of navigation, whether it is through US escorts or a multinational escort.”

Rubio emphasized that the US was “going to achieve our objectives in a matter of weeks, not months.”

The Trump administration has engaged in mediated talks with Iran, and has seen its hardline parliament speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, as a potentially useful negotiating partner.

“He’s the one who authorized the ships to me,” Trump revealed to the Financial Times. “Remember I said they’re giving me a present? And everyone said: ‘What’s the present? Bulls–t.’ When they heard about that they kept their mouth shut and the negotiations are going very well.”

But Ghalibaf publicly denounced the US on Monday, according to Iranian state media outlet IRNA, saying: “The enemy, openly, sends messages of negotiation and dialogue, but secretly is planning a ground attack.”

Ghalibaf threatened the US that its officials were “unaware that our men are waiting for American soldiers to enter on the ground so they can set them ablaze and punish their regional partners forever.”

Officials in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have primarily mediated talks with the US — foreign ministers from each nation met in Islamabad on Sunday.

6 Things to Know as Iran Conflict Hits 1-Month Mark. President Donald Trump has recently raised the prospect of a peace deal, but his administration is preparing additional military options as fighting continues!-Posted on The Epoch Times-By Ryan Morgan-On March 28, 2026:

A month has passed since U.S. and Israeli forces jointly launched a surprise attack on Iran, delivering the opening blow in an ongoing effort the U.S. military has dubbed Operation Epic Fury.

Iranian forces have since retaliated with attacks on targets across the region and spooked international trade.

President Donald Trump has recently raised the prospect of a peace deal, but his administration is also preparing additional military options.

Here’s where things stand after four weeks of fighting.

Iranian Military, Intelligence, and Political Leaders Killed

The opening U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran, on Feb. 28, included decapitation strikes aimed at killing numerous senior Iranian military and political leaders.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the 86-year-old Shia Islamist cleric sitting at the pinnacle of leadership in the Iranian regime, was killed in those initial strikes.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the late ayatollah, has since replaced his father as the supreme leader of Iran. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has said the younger Khamenei was likely disfigured in the strikes on the first day of the conflict, but the exact status of the new Iranian leader remains unclear.

Other senior Iranian leaders killed on the opening day of the conflict included Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour. Israel’s military reported a senior Iranian intelligence official named Saleh Asadi was also killed in the opening attacks, along with dozens of other senior Iranian military and intelligence leaders.

An Israeli strike killed Ali Larijani on March 17. Larijani was a senior security advisor to the late Khamenei and had previously served as a top international negotiator dealing with Iran’s nuclear program.

On March 26, Israeli forces killed Commodore Alireza Tangsiri, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s naval component.

Iran’s Forces Battered, Still Fighting

As of March 26, U.S. forces have reported striking more than 10,000 Iranian targets during Operation Epic Fury.

The Israeli military has reported several thousand more strikes on Iranian targets over the past month.

In addition to targeting top Iranian leaders, U.S. and Israeli forces have worked to destroy Iran’s offensive military capabilities.

At a March 26 White House cabinet meeting, Hegseth said more than 150 Iranian vessels have been sunk. Those vessels include larger traditional warships as well as numerous smaller vessels capable of laying mines in key regional waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz. 

The joint U.S. and Israeli operations have also sought to drive down the number of Iranian missile and drone attacks.

The Pentagon has said Iran’s missile and drone attacks are down around 90 percent from their peak. Officials have declined to specify how many missiles, drones, or launchers have been destroyed.

Meanwhile, countries around the region are dealing with dozens of drone and missile attacks each day.

Ongoing efforts are also focused on destroying Iran’s military industrial capacity.

A Pentagon official said U.S. operations have “damaged or destroyed over 66% of Iranian missile, drone, and naval production facilities and shipyards.”

Conflict Awakens Iranian Proxy Network

Tehran’s regional partners and proxies have rallied to their side since the start of Operation Epic Fury.

Fighting has intensified along the Israel-Lebanon border over the last month. There, Israeli forces have renewed skirmishes with Hezbollah, a designated terrorist group long considered an ally to Iran’s Shia Islamic leadership.

Israeli forces have reported dozens of strikes and ground raids targeting Hezbollah positions. Israel’s military has also confirmed several of its troops have been killed or wounded in the fighting.

Hezbollah has also launched rocket and drone attacks against Israel.

In Iraq, U.S. forces are fighting with Iranian-aligned militia groups that exist within Iraq’s state-sponsored Popular Mobilization Forces. At a March 19 Pentagon briefing, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine reported U.S. airstrikes targeting these Iranian-linked groups.

Yemen’s Houthi movement, another designated terrorist group aligned with Iran, has also threatened to resume attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, as they did in the fall of 2023 and throughout 2024.

 Rising Demands on US Forces

Weeks into the Iran conflict, the Pentagon dispatched two separate amphibious ready groups to the Middle East. Each group can consist of up to 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines, including amphibious landing forces, fighter jets, and troop transport and attack helicopters.

More recently, the Pentagon also dispatched elements of the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, including the division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team.

A growing number of U.S. ground troops have been diverted to the region. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the recent troop deployments are just to provide contingency options.

Speaking with reporters as he arrived in France on March 27 for a G7 Foreign Affairs Ministerial meeting, Rubio said the United States is ahead of schedule on its military objectives in the Iran conflict and can complete them without needing ground troops.

“We can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops, but we are always going to be prepared to give the president maximum optionality,” Rubio said.

13 US Military Personnel Killed

Thirteen U.S. military personnel have been killed in operations against Iran since Feb. 28.

Of these, six U.S. soldiers were killed in a single drone strike on a tactical operations center at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait on March 1. Another six U.S. airmen were killed when their KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft crashed over western Iraq on March 12.

On March 27, around a dozen U.S. military personnel were injured at the Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia, a U.S. official familiar with the matter told The Epoch Times.

There have been more than 300 U.S. troops wounded in action, according to a U.S. Central Command spokesman. Of that number, 273 have returned to duty.

Three U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets were shot down in an apparent friendly fire incident early in the conflict.

An F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter was damaged during combat operations over Iran on March 19.

A U.S. official has told The Epoch Times that 10 more unmanned U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones have been shot down in the conflict.

The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, which was dispatched to the region shortly before the conflict began, sustained fire damage on March 12. The carrier subsequently relocated to Greece to undergo maintenance and repairs.

Peace Talks Ongoing, US Leaders Say

At a U.S.-Saudi investment conference in Miami on March 27, Trump’s special presidential envoy Steve Witkoff said meetings on the Iran conflict are expected within the week, adding, “We’re certainly hopeful for it.”

Witkoff confirmed during a White House Cabinet meeting on March 26 that he has relayed a 15-point proposal to end the ongoing armed conflict with Iran.

“I can report to you today that we have, along with your foreign policy team, presented a 15-point action list that forms the framework for a peace deal,” Witkoff told Trump.

Witkoff declined to specify the terms of the U.S. proposal, which he said was relayed through Pakistani intermediaries.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have downplayed any such talks.

In a statement shared by Iranian state media, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had received messages from Washington by way of intermediaries, but said, “this is not considered a negotiation.”

In recent days, Trump has highlighted progress in negotiations with Tehran to end the conflict.

“They say, ‘Oh, we’re not talking’ ... They are begging to work out a deal,” Trump said during the March 26 Cabinet meeting.

Trump also revealed that Iranian leaders had offered permission for 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz unharmed as a gesture of goodwill.

In a separate comment on Truth Social on March 26, Trump threatened worsening consequences for Tehran if a deal isn’t reached soon.

“They better get serious soon, before it is too late, because once that happens, there is no turning back,” he wrote.

The push to negotiate an end to the fighting comes as Iranian attacks have targeted fuel facilities along the Persian Gulf, as well as commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz—through which around 25 percent of the world’s oceangoing oil and other global commodities pass.

Gas prices in the United States have risen by an average of $1 a gallon since the start of the conflict, as the fighting continues to threaten fuel markets.

Additional Middle East energy sites hang in the balance.

On March 21, Trump issued a 48-hour deadline for Iran to completely reopen the Strait of Hormuz or see its energy sites destroyed. Following Trump’s initial ultimatum, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened to completely close down access to the Strait of Hormuz and target energy facilities in Middle Eastern countries that host U.S. forces. They also threatened to attack crucial water desalination facilities operated by those neighboring countries.

Trump has since postponed his strike deadline to April 6.
