Tillerson Issues Tough Ultimatum to Putin

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a ultimatum to Russian President Vladimir Putin over his support of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. He made the comments Tuesday to reporters after a meeting with diplomats in Italy.

Tillerson pressured the G-7 countries to join together against Assad’s regime, and demanded that Putin choose between his ally in Syria accused of war crimes and Hezbollah, or join his detractors, led by the United States. He also made it clear that the United States placed at least part of the blame on Russia for the chemical attack.

“Last week Bashar al-Assad’s regime killed even more of its own people using chemical weapons,” he explained. “Our missile strike in response to his repeated use of banned weapons was necessary as a matter of U.S. national security interests. We do not want the regime’s uncontrolled stockpile of chemical weapons to fall into the hands of ISIS, or other terrorist groups who could and want to attack the United States and our allies” . . .


“It is also clear that Russia has failed to uphold the agreements they had entered into under multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions,” Tillerson added. “These agreements stipulated Russia as the guarantor of a Syria free of chemical weapons, that they would also locate and destroy all such armaments in Syria. Stockpiles and continued use demonstrate that Russia has failed in its responsibility to deliver on its 2013 commitment. Anonymous US Official: Russia Knew Syrian Chemical Attack Was Coming

The United States has concluded that Russia knew ahead of time that Syria would launch a chemical weapons attack last week, a senior U.S. official says.

The official offered circumstantial elements to back up his claim, but no concrete proof. And others in the Trump administration cautioned that final American determination had been made that Russia had advance knowledge of the attack, which killed more than 80 people and prompted retaliatory U.S. cruise missile strikes.

The senior official said Monday that a drone operated by Russians was flying over a hospital as victims of the attack were rushing to get treatment. Hours after the drone left, a Russian-made fighter jet bombed the hospital in what American officials believe was an attempt to cover up the usage of chemical weapons. Idaho’s ‘Free Market’ Education Program Is Just Another Form of Government Control

A new program the Idaho Department of Education is calling “Advanced Opportunities” is being hailed as a “revolutionary” and “free-market” approach to improve student outcomes. The program works by giving public school students a $1,500 scholarship for every year skipped and graduated early, which can then be used for post-secondary education in the state.

The term “free market” appears to have slowly morphed into code for the insidious meddling of behavioral economics, invariably carried out with the power of government. In fact, there’s nothing market-based about subsidies, wealth redistribution, and a centrally directed incentive structure that treats students as pawns in a master plan rather than as capable, self-actualizing individuals.

In fairness, I can see where the program’s proponents are coming from. Students who are too bright to be stuck in high school for four years are allowed to leave early, and use the taxpayer resources they would have consumed for more productive endeavors. Sounds great. But, in fact, this reeks of social engineering.


In a free market, people pay for services they wish to consume. You pay for school, because you want what it has to offer, including classes and a diploma. In Idaho’s perverse model, it is the schools that effectively pay students for obtaining a diploma, which is precisely backward from how business is supposed to work.

If families were receiving back the same amount they pay in taxes for schools, that would be one thing, but in most cases not only will they receive significantly more (also known as a government subsidy), it is the state that gets to choose how those funds are spent. This is the illusion of choice — not actually allowing students to self-direct their learning.

Furthermore, the Idaho program assumes that early graduation is the best thing for students. Government always presumes to know what students need. And while some would undoubtedly flourish from graduating early, others would not. Yet the incentives are purposely lined up to encourage one behavior over the other, without any regard for individual variation.

When you establish these centralized incentives, it can push students in the wrong direction, or make them feel forced into a path they wouldn’t have chosen.

There’s a simpler and better way to reform education without all this technocratic tinkering. If you want to give students more options, repeal mandatory education laws and let them choose. If you want people to have more resources for education, stop taxing them for schools they don’t want to go to.

The problem with education policy is that it has all become about the details, while failing to examine fundamental philosophies of learning and childhood. It would be hard to think of a better example of missing the forest for the trees.

Policy becomes an endless debate about which forms of control work best, with nobody stopping to ask whether we need to control people at all. Freedom is never on the table.

You can tinker with funding and incentive structures forever, arguing over the minutia of whether vouchers are preferable to charter schools. But until we start to examine seriously the basic assumptions of the government-run education system, we are unlikely to make any real progress. Red Crayons That Identify as Blue: The Latest in the Radical Indoctrination of Public Schools

Sixth graders quizzed on what they’d do if asked to go to a gay bar, high schoolers forced to write the Islamic creed “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammad is his prophet,” first graders forced to read about a red crayon that self-identifies as blue. The push of radical ideology onto our public school children continues. These latest examples shock, but don’t surprise.

The Invitation to a Gay Bar

Students at a Florida middle school recently brought home a disturbing survey, reported The Blaze. A teacher asked her students to answer questions about how they would feel in different situations. The only problem? They were questions designed to teach the children liberal morals.

One question asked how the sixth-graders would feel if they were asked to a gay bar. Or if they went to a gay bar and someone of the same sex asked them to dance, if they saw their brother kiss a boy, or if two women down the hall (in a dorm) were lesbians.

Others were designed to detect racism. Students were asked how they would feel if they lived in a black neighborhood. Or how they would feel if they saw black men approaching them on the street.

Even the kids knew something was wrong. One sixth-grader named Tori told WFTS-TV that she felt the questions on the survey were “very inappropriate.” “I thought some of them were racist, I thought some of them were sexist, I thought it was completely intolerable.”

At some point, the teacher realized what she did. When kids asked if they could take the survey home to mom or dad, the teacher seemed to panic, said Tori. “She was going, ‘No, don’t show your mom, don’t take that home. I’m taking it back up.’” The survey came from a book titled Exploring White Privilege by Robert P. Amico.

This is not an isolated event. Schools nationwide thrust the liberal agenda on their students. Here are three more examples.

Islamic Creeds, Boys in Dresses

At least one lawsuit arose over a Maryland high school’s telling students to write out the Islamic creed, the Shahada, and recite the Five Pillars of Islam. According to The Free Beacon, students “were subjected to disparaging teachings about Christianity.” They were taught Christianity for one day but Islam for two weeks. So not only were the Christian students’ religion demeaned, but they had to memorize another religion’s tenets in opposition to their own.

Last year the Obama administration threatened to pull funding from schools that did not let transgendered students use the bathroom they wanted. More than one school buckled under the pressure.

A first-grade book called Jacob’s New Dress was in every first-grade classroom in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina. After outrage from state legislators, the schools pulled the book. They replaced it with Red: A Crayon’s Story about a red crayon that self-identifies as blue. The Charlotte Observer reported that the school board is getting ready to add sexual orientation and “Gender identity/Expression” to its multiculturalism policy.

The Need for Vigilance

The drive to force radical ideas onto our children is alive and well in the classroom. Even at the first-grade level. “The purpose of our elementary schools is to teach writing, reading and arithmetic, not to encourage boys to wear dresses,” said Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition.

Thomas More Law Center’s President Richard Thompson urged parents to “be ever vigilant to the Islamic indoctrination of their children under the guise of teaching history and multiculturalism. This is happening in public schools across the country.”

Conservative and Christian parents must watch like hawks the education their children receive, especially if they go to public school. Too many schools in too many places want to feed our children information hostile to conservative or Christian values. The Cancer Eating Away at College Campuses

The average American has little knowledge of the extent to which our institutions of higher learning have been infected with a spreading cancer.

One aspect of that cancer is akin to the loyalty oaths of the 1940s and ’50s. Professors were often required to sign statements that affirmed their loyalty to the United States government, plus swear they were not members of any organizations, including the Communist Party USA, which sought the overthrow of the United States government.

Fortunately, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down loyalty oaths as a condition of employment in 1964.

Today we’re seeing the re-emergence of the mentality that gave us loyalty oaths, in the form of mandating that faculty members write “diversity statements,” especially as part of hiring and promotion procedures. They are forced to pledge allegiance to the college’s diversity agenda.

For example, the University of California, San Diego requires that one’s “Contributions to Diversity Statement” describe one’s “past experience, activities and future plans to advance diversity, equity and inclusion, in alignment with UC San Diego’s mission to reflect the diversity of California and to meet the educational needs and interests of its diverse population.”

George Leef, director of research at the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, has written an article titled “Loyalty Oaths Return with Faculty ‘Diversity Statements.’”

His article documents the growing trend of mandated faculty diversity statements—such as that at Virginia Tech, in which “candidates should include a list of activities that promote or contribute to inclusive teaching, research, outreach, and service.”

College diversity agendas are little more than a call for ideological conformity. Diversity only means racial, sex, and sexual orientation quotas.

In pursuit of this agenda, colleges spend billions of dollars on offices of diversity and inclusion, diversity classes, and diversity indoctrination. The last thing that diversity hustlers want is diversity in ideas.

By the way, the next time you hear a college president boasting about how diverse his college is, ask him how many Republican faculty members there are in his journalism, psychology, English, and sociology departments.

In many cases, there is none, and in others, the ratio of Democrats to Republicans might be 20-to-1.

Nearly 100 percent of political campaign contributions from liberal arts faculty go to Democrats. At Cornell University, for example, 97 percent of contributions from faculty went to Democrats. At Georgetown University, it was 96 percent.

A study by my George Mason University colleague Daniel B. Klein, along with Charlotta Stern, titled “Professors and Their Politics: The Policy Views of Social Scientists,” concluded:

The academic social sciences are pretty much a one-party system. Were the Democratic tent broad, the one-party system might have intellectual diversity. But the data show almost no diversity of opinion among the Democratic professors when it comes to the regulatory, redistributive state: They like it. Especially when it comes to the minimum wage, workplace-safety regulation, pharmaceutical regulation, environmental regulation, discrimination regulation, gun control, income redistribution, and public schooling.

The fascist college trend that we are witnessing today is by no means new. As early as 1991, Yale University President Benno Schmidt warned:

The most serious problems of freedom of expression in our society today exist on our campuses. The assumption seems to be that the purpose of education is to induce correct opinion rather than to search for wisdom and to liberate the mind.

What diversity oaths seek is to maintain political conformity among the faculty indoctrinating our impressionable, intellectually immature young people. Vladimir Lenin said, “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.”

That’s the goal of the leftist teaching agenda.

You might ask, “Williams, what can be done?” Parents, donors, and legislatures need to stop being lazy. Check to see whether a college has diversity mandates for faculty. Check to see whether campus speakers have been disinvited.

College administrators have closed minds about their diversity agenda, but there’s nothing more effective ‘in opening up closed minds than the sound of pocketbooks snapping shut. By Brian Mark Weber: All eyes were on the Senate this week as Democrats and Republicans engaged in a battle over whether to confirm Neil Gorsuch as the next justice of the Supreme Court. Already, Republicans have invoked the so-called "nuclear option," a rules change that allows them to confirm Gorsuch with a simple majority vote rather than face an unprecedented partisan filibuster from Democrats. It's worth noting that Democrats started us down this road in 2003, when they filibustered Miguel Estrada, George W. Bush's nominee to the influential DC Circuit, long a stepping stone to the Supreme Court. Then they nuked it in 2013, leaving the filibuster for only the Supreme Court.
          Democrats aren't opposed to Neil Gorsuch because of their feigned ideological concerns, or because he'll restore balance to the court, or because he's not Supreme Court material. Rather, they fear Gorsuch doesn't accept the judicial dogma of all true progressives: that the Constitution is a "living document" to be interpreted so broadly that it basically means whatever progressives want it to mean.
          The problem with progressive justices today is not that they merely exaggerate the concept of a "living Constitution" or even that they're allowing leftist ideology to determine their interpretation of law (although both of these are certainly part of the problem). It's that judges responsible for ensuring the integrity of the judicial system do everything they can to circumvent the system, all in the name of social justice and progressivism. The real concern is that they view the courts as a vehicle to deliver their agenda rather than as a component of constitutional government.
          In the progressive mind, the only thing that matters is the long-term objective. As National Review's David French writes, "Never mind the actual words on the page. Never mind the common meaning of the words then or now. All that matters is the right result — the triumph of the social-justice 'super clause' that is hidden in every law, regulation, or constitutional provision."
          Hardly a week goes by without a new case popping up in which leftist judges have twisted the intent of constitutional law in order to serve a progressive end. This week, the Seventh Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals (which covers Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin) ruled in Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits sex discrimination, also covers sexual orientation.
          Let's take a look at just one of the arguments made by the concurring judges: "The compelling social interest in protecting homosexuals (male and female) from discrimination justifies an admittedly loose 'interpretation' of the word 'sex' in Title VII to embrace homosexuality: an interpretation that cannot be imputed to the framers of the statute but that we are entitled to adopt."
          Now that's a bold statement revealing the true intent of these judicial demagogues. And they actually have the audacity to spell it out in the ruling.
          Members of the Rainbow Mafia may be celebrating this ruling, but they had better think twice about what this precedent might do to our system of government in the coming years. Whether one believes that sexual orientation should be a protected class, in the end turning the courts into a quasi-legislature will ultimately undermine all of us. The Founding Fathers certainly didn't want to empower the judicial branch with legislative powers, but that's where we're heading.
          Writing for the Washington Examiner, Joseph Murray asserts, "Few would argue that it is just for an employer to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. It is why many states have passed civil rights laws prohibiting such discrimination. But what happened in a federal court in Chicago on Tuesday is not about protecting the LGBT community. Instead, the Seventh Circuit has used the LGBT community as a conduit to further distance the federal judiciary from the checks and balances that once contained it."
          Sensing the non-activist jurisprudence of Judge Neil Gorsuch, Democrats who previously recognized the nominee's qualifications have now threatened to undermine his candidacy by attacking his character and professionalism. Remember, the Senate unanimously confirmed Gorsuch to the Court of Appeals in 2006. Now Senate Democrats think he's an imminent threat to the Constitution.
          Progressives have issues with Gorsuch because his views on the purpose and function of the Supreme Court are too close to that of the Founding Fathers. In other words, Gorsuch believes the Constitution's provisions should not be re-interpreted to mean what we think they should mean for the convenience of political expediency, but rather what the Founders intended them to mean.
          People in a free society change their views on a wide range of issues over time, but our Founders gave us various mechanisms to respond to contemporary mores and morals such as amending the Constitution. But for progressives, constitutionalism and the separation of powers are serious roadblocks to the enactment of their sweeping agenda.  ~The Patriot Post

Before we begin the more detailed narrative of the Gospel accounts in the next chapter, let’s look at a short sketch of Christ’s life and ministry, which will provide an overview before we dig deeper.

Jesus was the only person who came into the world to die. “Death,” writes Bishop Fulton Sheen, “was the goal and fulfillment of His life, the gold that He was seeking. Few of His words or actions are intelligible without reference to His Cross. . . . The story of every human life begins with birth and ends with death. In the Person of Christ, however, it was His death that was first and His life that was last. . . . It was not so much that His birth cast a shadow on His life and thus led to His death; it was rather that the Cross was first, and cast its shadow back to His birth. His has been the only life in the world that was ever lived backward.”

Though He was born to die and He intended from the beginning to do just that, His death would be in God’s time. Before He and the Father would allow Himself to be captured, He had to complete His ministry. He came to preach a message of redemption, salvation, and life. But it wasn’t as if He said to Himself, “I am going to say the most controversial things I can to antagonize the religious authorities into killing Me.” No, His message was what it was—and is—and some would accept it and others would reject it, because the Truth causes division (Luke 12:51). Yet His message is precisely why they wanted to kill Him. He challenged their authority, traditions, and interpretations of their sacred Law, including the right to heal on the Sabbath. He “blasphemously” claimed to be the Messiah and the King, and made a triumphal entry into the Holy City. He claimed to be the Son of God who had the authority to forgive sins, and He had the audacity to cleanse their Temple.

In his sermon to the Gentiles recorded in the Book of Acts, Peter provides a summary of Jesus’ ministry and His substitutionary death. In this brief, inspired account we see an apostle on fire for Christ and evangelizing to the Gentiles:

So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name” (10:34–43).

Let’s not pass over Peter’s declaration lightly. Everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness. “There are no incurable cases under the gospel,” writes J. C. Ryle. “Any sinner may be healed if he will only come to Christ.”

Because the Gospels don’t provide complete biographical data and sometimes present material thematically rather than chronologically, the precise order of some events is uncertain. Matthew (1–2) and Luke (1–2) both provide information on Jesus’ birth and early life. Both report that Jesus’ birth is pre-announced and that Mary gave birth to Him as a virgin. Both include genealogies tracing Jesus’ human ancestry, whereas John opens his Gospel declaring that the Word—the second person of the Triune God—is eternal and an agent in the creation. In Luke the shepherds visit the baby in Bethlehem after an angel of the Lord appears to them. In Matthew, the wise men visit to worship Him after seeing His star, and Herod, after trying unsuccessfully to find the baby, orders the murder of innocent children in Bethlehem in an attempt to kill Jesus (2:1–18). Herod fails because Joseph obeys an angel of the Lord who appears to him in a dream and tells him to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt until it’s safe to return (Matt. 2:13–15). When Herod dies, the angel tells Joseph to return to Israel with Jesus and Mary (Matt. 2:19–21). Other than Luke’s brief reference to Jesus at the Temple when He is twelve years old, we have no other information about Jesus’ life until shortly before He begins His ministry.

In preparation for Jesus’ public ministry, John the Baptist announces His coming and calls all to repentance (Matt. 3:1–12; Luke 3:1–17). John baptizes Jesus (Matt. 3:13–17; Luke 3:21–22), who undergoes the temptations of Satan, each time invoking Scripture as a defense against Satan’s wiles and demonstrating His obedience as the Son of God (Matt. 4:1–11; Luke 4:1–13).

Jesus begins His ministry when He is about thirty years old (Luke 3:23). He ministers in Judea following His baptism and makes contacts there with some of His future disciples (John 1:35–42). He next goes into Galilee (John 1:43) and performs His first miracle, or sign, by turning water into wine (John 2:1–11). He generally ministers in Galilee at this point because the Jews in Judea are seeking to kill Him (John 7:1). But He makes periodic trips into Judea, such as when He goes to Jerusalem for the Passover, where he drives the money-changers from the Temple (John 2:14), and meets the Pharisee Nicodemus (John 3:1).

Jesus calls His disciples (Mark 3:13–19) and does extensive teaching. He delivers the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5–7), calls for repentance and belief in the Gospel (Mark 1:15), and announces the arrival of the kingdom of God (Luke 11:20). He performs miracles of healing (Mark 1:40–3:12; Matt. 8:1–9:34), exorcisms (Matt. 8:28–34), and miracles involving nature, such as quieting a storm (Mark 4:35–41). He is well received by many people (Matt. 4:23–25) who are impressed by His miracles, though they don’t fully understand His mission. But the religious authorities oppose Him (Mark 2:5–12), and their antagonism intensifies as the news spreads about His works and ministry (Matt. 12:24).

While Jesus is busy with His own ministry, He appoints His twelve disciples and trains them before sending them out to preach repentance, cast out demons, and perform healings (Matt. 10:1–42; Mark 6:7–13). During this period, He often instructs in parables (Matt. 13:1–53; Mark 4:1–34). He is rejected in His hometown of Nazareth (Matt. 13:53–58), feeds the five thousand (Matt. 14:13–21), and is further challenged by Pharisees from Jerusalem (Matt. 15:1–20; Mark 7:1–23), leading Him to shift His ministry into the Gentile areas close to Tyre and Sidon (Mark 7:24–31).

Some believe Jesus’ ministry reaches a turning point at Caesarea Philippi (Matt. 16:13–20; Mark 8:27–38; Luke 9:18–27), when He fully acknowledges to Peter that He is the Messiah. Shortly thereafter He proves His assertion when He is transfigured before Peter, James, and John (Matt. 17:1–8).

Jesus tells His disciples many times over an extensive period that He is the Messiah and that He must die, and even predicts His own death, but they don’t fully grasp His message until after He dies and is resurrected. He doesn’t broadcast publicly that He is the Messiah, however, because He isn’t yet ready to be captured. But He does tell some people, such as the Samaritan woman at the well, because they are outside the region where His life could be threatened. He must complete His ministry before He allows the authorities to capture Him, which is why we see Him narrowly escaping capture numerous times long before His final week.

Jesus heads from Galilee back toward Jerusalem (Luke 9:51; John 7:10) and continues His ministry with His disciples. Luke devotes a large portion of his Gospel to this period, when Jesus goes to the home of Mary and Martha, teaches about prayer, tells many parables including the Good Samaritan, clashes again with the Pharisees, and lectures His disciples on the great costs of discipleship and servanthood. He casts out a demon from a mute man, which so threatens the Pharisees that they accuse Him of doing it through the power of Satan, to which Jesus responds that Satan wouldn’t cast himself out. He announces that blasphemy against the Son of God is forgivable but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not—for Jesus cast out demons through the power of the Holy Spirit. He rebukes the Pharisees for their obsession with external observances of righteousness while neglecting their souls. They care about the trappings of power but do not serve the poor or otherwise do God’s work.

Jesus makes His triumphal entry into Jerusalem as was prophesied in the Old Testament and pursues His controversial ministry, further challenges the Pharisees, and teaches His disciples about the future, the End Times, and the coming of the Son of Man—His Second Coming (Mark 13). During this week He and His disciples eat the last supper (Matt. 26:17–30).

Jesus predicts His betrayal, and that night He is arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane at the behest of His traitorous disciple, Judas Iscariot. He is tried before Annas, the Sanhedrin (the Jewish tribunal), Herod Antipas, and Pontius Pilate. The Jewish authorities charge Him with blasphemy, but since they have no power under Roman law to crucify Him, they pressure Pilate to convict Him of treason against Rome for claiming He is the King of the Jews. Pilate finds no guilt in Him and tries to avoid administering punishment by offering the Jews the opportunity to call for the release of one prisoner, which is a Passover tradition. Pilate is hoping he can pacify them by punishing but not crucifying Jesus. The Jews, however, want Him dead and call for the release of Barabbas, a criminal prisoner, instead of Jesus.

Knowing Jesus is innocent, Pilate could have released both Him and Barabbas, but he finally acquiesces and orders Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus is mocked, spit on, flogged, and crucified with two common thieves on the eve of the Sabbath at Golgotha (Mark 15:22). He is buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea (John 19:38), a member of the Sanhedrin and follower of Jesus, who requests permission to bury Him. Though Roman guards are posted at the tomb because of the Jews’ fear that His disciples will steal His body, Jesus’ body disappears from the tomb, and He rises on the third day just as He had predicted (Luke 24:1–7). For the next forty days He makes many appearances to His followers and others, then ascends into heaven (Acts 1:1–11), promising to send His disciples the Holy Spirit, Who would empower them to carry on His ministry.

President Donald Trump decided Thursday to send 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at Shayrat Air Base in western Syria in the wake of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's use of chemical weapons against civilians earlier this month. (It's worth wondering whether these are some of Saddam Hussein's WMD, which we have long suspected were transported to Syria ahead of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.) Trump's move, the first time the U.S. has directly targeted Assad, serves America's foreign policy interests in three ways.
          First, the speed with which the retaliatory strike was launched sends the very clear message that Trump will act decisively to protect what he called America's "vital national security interests." The scale of the strike also sends a message. Fifty-nine Tomahawks made a mess of the base and the three squadrons of fighters based there. This base is going to need a lot of repairs — and its Russian Su-22s and MiG-23s won't be easy to replace. In other words, Assad's feeling the pain, and it goes a little way toward repairing the damage done when Barack liar-nObama didn't back up his "red line" declaration.
          Second, a certain pudgy psychopath in Pyongyang just received 59 warning shots. Trump earlier said that unilateral action against North Korea was an option. Now, that warning is much more credible.
          Third, and, we would argue, most important, Vladimir Putin has to be feeling nervous. Between sequestration and the liar-nObama administration's slashing of weapons procurement like the F-22 and Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle, the Pentagon was in a world of hurt. Yet within 72 hours, the United States still crushed Shayrat Air Base. What will the United States be capable of after Trump rebuilds our military capabilities? Putin would be smart to avoid finding out. Russia may be developing some modern systems, but there aren't many of them in service yet. That hasn't stopped the Kremlin from pledging to help its client Assad defend against future strikes.
          Meanwhile, we expect the Leftmedia will try to paint Trump's attack as being aimed at countering the Russia-collusion narrative. It does serve that purpose, but we don't think it was Trump's motive for risking American blood and treasure. For one thing, the missile strike isn't Trump's first move to anger Russia, so if he's supposed to be bought and paid for, he's not showing it.
          Indeed, strategically, this strike isn't nearly as important as the tremendous disruption and pain for Putin's economic base caused by increased American oil production. Russia has been handicapped by this stout competition, and Trump's moves on energy have only made the U.S. stronger.
          Whether this missile salvo signifies a true change in U.S. policy toward Syria or whether we soon return to business as usual remains to be seen.  ~The Patriot Post

{city-journal.org} ~ Years ago, when I was a financial journalist covering the greater New York region, one of the biggest stories I covered was the relocation of the area’s major companies to states like Texas, North Carolina, and Florida. Back then, a typical response of local political leaders to every departure was that those firms were short-sighted, preferring to save a few bucks on taxes for the sake of moving to places that “under invested” in quality of life. Their hospitals didn’t save as many lives as ours, the story went, and their schools didn’t create an educated workforce like ours did. Their infrastructure was “rural,” at best. Still, for some reason, the firms kept going. Some of us began wondering whether things weren’t quite as bad elsewhere as the defenders of the New York/New Jersey region’s model of high taxes, high costs, and deference to special interests made them out to be.

I can’t help recalling those days whenever the region experiences one of its increasingly common meltdowns—like the current commuting fiasco that’s plagued New Jersey Transit riders thanks to a Monday derailment in Penn Station. The spillover effects are also slamming commuters from Long Island and riders of the PATH trains. If you follow these issues closely, you know that the derailment itself—the second in ten days at Penn—is only a small part of the story of how the political culture of one of the nation’s richest regions has managed to squander its resources so thoroughly over the past several decades.

Consider the agencies tasked with dealing with the most recent mess. While it’s not clear yet whether Amtrak which manages Penn Station and owns the tracks or NJ Transit whose train derailed is at fault for the derailment, the accident has already led to a chain of negative consequences. When Penn Station riders were rerouted to Hoboken, for instance, they entered a station still under construction to fix the damage caused by the September 29 crash of a NJ Transit train that barreled in after the train’s operator apparently fell asleep or blacked out at the wheel. The construction work on the Hoboken platform worsened the overcrowding. Meanwhile, NJ Transit riders directed into the PATH system, operated by the giant bi-state Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, found that switching problems had overburdened that service, too, so that a system that could barely accommodate all the extra traffic under the best circumstances became unbearable for some commuters, who just gave up. Delays are expected to continue until Friday.

These are not isolated incidents. NJ Transit, after all, is the agency that parked trains below sea level during superstorm Sandy, causing $100 million of damage and contributing to service shortfalls. It’s also the agency that stranded thousands of people at Met Life Stadium after the Super Bowl in 2014, prompting fans to chant on the platforms, “New Jersey sucks.” The Port Authority, meanwhile, has already given the region some of the world’s worst airports. Neither Newark nor LaGuardia make the list of the world’s top 100 airports; Joe loose lips-Biden famously described LaGuardia as “Third World.”

In the wake of accidents like Monday’s, you will inevitably read that the region needs to invest more in infrastructure, even if that means ever-higher taxes. What you won’t read about much is what resources we already have and how our political culture—the product of our voting habits—has frittered them away. One consequence is that we get higher taxes—as when New Jersey raised its gasoline taxes after the Hoboken crash—without reform, guaranteeing that many of the same practices that led to trouble in the first place will continue. New York and New Jersey are, respectively, first and third in taxes per capita collected from residents (Alaska and North Dakota collect more, but much of their tax revenue comes from energy companies). Even with all this tax revenue, transit agencies impose stratospheric fees. The Port Authority’s tolls for bridges and tunnels and its airline fees at Newark Airport rank among the highest in the nation, while NJ Transit charges riders the highest fares of any U.S. commuter train system.

Where this money goes is a mystery only to those who don’t pay attention. Less than a decade ago, the big story about NJ Transit, for instance, was not underinvestment but the upward-spiraling subsidies that the state had to pay to keep the agency afloat. One big reason: the rich contracts it awarded workers, which resulted in the agency spending 80 cents on employee benefits for every dollar it paid in wages. In the private sector, the average is about 43 cents for every dollar in salary for the average worker and 53 cents per dollar for those in transportation. Though NJ Transit has tried to hold down costs for years, employee benefits alone consume half of all revenues the agency collects from riders. Reforms have failed at least in part because workers can strike—a devastating tool for a government transit monopoly.

The Port Authority, for its part, infamously spent $4 billion on one PATH station, a classic boondoggle that came in at twice the original price.  In addition, thanks to years of rich worker contracts and poor controls over overtime and other costs, the average worker at the Port Authority’s steeply unprofitable PATH service earned $91,000 in 2014, while officers who police its facilities took home an average of $153,000 in cash compensation. Those high tolls and airport fees, in other words, finance salaries and benefits that are rich even by the luxe standards of New York and New Jersey public-sector contracts. Not to be outdone, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority has taken a project to build a rail tunnel under the East River from Queens to Manhattan—originally priced at $3 billion and slated for completion in 2010—and turned it into at least a $10 billion undertaking that won’t get finished until 2022, according to current projections, largely because the original estimates purposely hid the real price of the work and union featherbedding, among other things.

This history suggests that the parties associated with planning and building two new rail tunnels under the Hudson River—New Jersey, New York, the Port Authority, and Amtrak are all involved—will do nothing to prevent something similar from happening again. Given that preliminary costs for the Hudson rail tunnels are already estimated at $23 billion, the project might well turn out to be the one that finally breaks the region financially. It wouldn’t be the first time that such a megaproject undermined the stability of an economy.

Why do residents put up with it? I’m often asked. Many don’t, actually. Faced with a political system rigged against reform both states’ political districts are among the most gerrymandered, making it difficult to oust incumbents, people are voting with their feet. New York and New Jersey are leaders in outmigration of residents, and they rank among the states whose residents would most like to leave if they could. New Jersey, despite its wealth, is broke; New York’s budget sustains itself on the taxes that Wall Street throws off, but vast regions of the state resemble Appalachia, as Eliot Spitzer once said.

At times during my years covering the relocation story, I wondered how many of the businesses that fled the region would regret it. I’ve stopped wondering.

By Arnold Ahlert: In law, preponderance of evidence is a term used to describe a case-winning standard of proof, absent incontrovertible evidence. Did the liar-nObama administration "spy" on members of the incoming Trump administration? The outing of former National Security Advisor Susan Rice as someone who obtained "unmasked" names of Trump officials is not definitive, in and of itself. What makes it compelling is that it represents one of several efforts undertaken by an liar-nObama administration to keep tabs on, and/or intimidate, people it considered threats to its agenda.
          "The liar-nObama administration, which has a chilling zeal for investigating leaks and prosecuting leakers, has failed to offer a credible justification for secretly combing through the phone records of reporters and editors at The Associated Press in what looks like a fishing expedition for sources and an effort to frighten off whistle-blowers," The New York Times reported in 2013.
          The liar-nObama administration insisted the effort was necessary to protect national security. In reality it was a message that the normal process of government-press negotiations regarding the protections of news sources with sensitive stories had been kicked to the curb. "When that happens, sources clam up and dry up," columnist S.E. Cupp explained at the time. "That silence, especially in matters of war, diplomacy and peace, makes it that much harder for the press to expose government injustices to the public." Exactly.
          Shortly thereafter it was revealed that Fox New reporter James Rosen was also "monitored." The government obtained Rosen's phone records, those of his parents and his personal emails, as well as searched his security badge access records to track the reporter's visits to the State Department. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder authorized the spying, but apparently "forgot" his did so. Testifying under oath before the House Judiciary Committee, Holder — asked if the DOJ could prosecute reporters using the Espionage Act of 1917 — claimed it was "not something I've ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy." Neither is lying, but Holder did that anyway.
          In 2015, liar-nObama CIA officials "penetrated a computer network used by the Senate Intelligence Committee" and "sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department based on false information," the Times revealed. That effort included the use of a false online identity enabling CIA access to computers used by the committee staffers. Irony of ironies? The committee was tasked with monitoring CIA activities.
          Reporter Sharyl Attkisson, the former CBS correspondent who worked diligently to counter the administration's "narrative" regarding the Fast and Furious gunrunning scandal and Benghazi, sued the DOJ in 2015, alleging it hacked into her personal computer. The DOJ issued a denial, but on March 19, 2017 U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan denied the DOJ's motion to dismiss the case.
          In her blog, Attkisson describes the Orwellian atmosphere she and her husband endured in their own home. It included "anomalies" on her computer, TV, telephones and home alarm system, confirmation by forensic experts that "sophisticated surveillance spyware" had been installed on her laptop, and an "extra" Verizon FiOS fiber optics line — that subsequently "disappeared" — installed in her home. She also observed her laptop being remotely accessed and controlled, resulting in data deletion.
          In 2015, The Wall Street Journal revealed the liar-nObama administration's NSA monitored Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders opposed to liar-nObama's deal with Iran. In the course of that effort, the NSA "also swept up the contents of some of their private conversations with U.S. lawmakers and American-Jewish groups."
          A pro-Israel political operative insists "the administration weaponized the NSA's legitimate monitoring of communications of foreign officials to stay one step ahead of domestic political opponents" that became "a means of gathering real-time intelligence on Americans engaged in perfectly legitimate political activism — activism, due to the nature of the issue, that naturally involved conversations with foreigners." Sound familiar?
          Last week on Mark Levin's radio show, reporter Eli Lake used the term "reverse targeting" to explain how liar-nObama could gather intel on Trump and his associates while maintaining the plausible deniability attached to getting that intel while legitimately monitoring Russian exchanges with them — making any assertion they were targeting Trump, et al, virtually impossible to prove.
          Yet the outing of former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn's name to the press is a felony, and no matter how hard Democrats and their media lapdogs try to obscure that reality, it cannot be denied. Moreover, if assertions by House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) are accurate, the "unmasking" of people other than Flynn occurred — and it was not related to Russian exchanges.
          Compiling a preponderance of evidence against the liar-nObama administration would not be complete without reminding Americans how the IRS was also weaponized. Last week, Judicial Watch (JW) released another 695 pages of documents the administration failed to produce during the DOJ's IRS investigation. They reveal "admissions by the liar-nObama IRS that it inappropriately targeted conservative groups," JW President Tom Fitton explained, and "that the abuse continued — as the liar-nObama IRS tried to force conservative applicants to give up their First Amendment rights in order to finally get their applications granted."
          That scandal also included the systematic destruction of hard drives despite court orders to preserve evidence.
          The fact that liar-nObama's DOJ ultimately concluded there was no evidence of wrongdoing was one of the most corrupt moments in the history of the republic. Documents obtained in 2015 by JW revealed Lois Lerner, the FBI and DOJ officials had planned to target nonprofit organizations for criminal prosecution arising from alleged illegal political activity. In other words, the DOJ investigated itself and determined it was innocent.
          Then there is Susan Rice — the consummate ideological hack, more than willing to advance an agenda by any means necessary. Lying is her specialty: On five different TV shows, she flacked the disproven assertion the Benghazi attack was precipitated by an "offensive" video. She was "coincidentally" soon promoted by liar-nObama, from U.S. ambassador to the UN, to national security advisor. She topped that whopper with the assertion that deserter Bowe Bergdahl "served with honor and distinction."
          Now, after first claiming during a PBS interview she "knew nothing" about the unmasking of Trump officials, she subsequently admitted she did, but that nothing was used for political purposes.
          How deep does the rot go? As National Review's Andrew McCarthy explains only three agencies — the FBI, NSA and the CIA — are allowed to "unmask" the identities of "Americans caught up in other foreign intelligence efforts." Moreover, Rice and the White House are intelligence "consumers," not producers, as FBI Director James Comey stated during House testimony. Comey also insisted the FBI has "minimization" standards that are "obsessive" with regard to protecting the identities of Americans.
          Nonetheless, Rice was able to get the names. Moreover, former liar-nObama deputy defense secretary — and liar-Clinton campaign operative — Evelyn Farkas revealed that the effort was made to spread classified intel to members of Congress before it "disappeared," which is "why you have the leaking."

{city-journal.org} ~ News last night, that threats of violence by left-wing student activists at the Claremont Colleges disrupted an appearance by my colleague Heather Mac Donald, was as unsurprising as it was dispiriting. A year and a half ago, when highly publicized protests at Missouri and Yale led to copycat eruptions on campuses across the country, protesters at the schools of the Claremont consortium were especially notable for both their militancy and their unreason, with mob leaders at the five schools competing with one another in the sheer idiocy of their “nonnegotiable demands.” Worse, rather than condemn those threatening to shut down their campuses if they didn’t get their way, the administrators responded to the intellectual thuggery with sympathy and understanding.

As a graduate of the oldest of the Claremont Colleges, Pomona, I wrote at the time of how dramatically the character of the school had changed in the half-century since my arrival on a quiet, conservative campus in 1966; and, specifically, of the damage done by student protesters during my years there. The key event—the juncture from which there was no turning back—was the morning 50 or so demonstrators, including me, surrounded an Air Force recruiter in the campus placement office, chanting and heckling and otherwise preventing him from speaking to interested students. We had been forewarned that there would be severe repercussions if we disrupted the session, including possible expulsion, and we took the threat seriously. So when our punishment was announced, we were almost as surprised as we were relieved: “suspended suspension.”

Who, at the time, could have guessed that administrators, those surrogate-parent figures, were such pathetic wimps?

It was all too short a step from that moment to this past Thursday evening, when several hundred student thugs screaming “Fuck white supremacy” and “Black Lives matter here” surrounded the hall where Mac Donald was speaking, threatening with physical violence those seeking to enter. Eventually, Heather addressed an empty room, with a camera livestreaming her talk, even as the protesters screamed and banged on the doors from outside. Things grew so heated that campus cops, concerned for her safety, stopped her talk early and hustled her out.

There are differences, of course. Back then, wrong-headed and irresponsible as we were, we weren’t mean-spirited. Pomona wasn’t Berkeley; we didn’t take ourselves all that seriously. To the contrary, there was an antic element to it all; on some level, we knew perfectly well we were kids, doing what kids do—acting out against the grown-ups. Even the members of the Black Student Union, with their huge Afros, serious demeanors, and just-like-the-Panthers black leather jackets, were, at heart, polite middle-class kids like us, their menace a pose. I’ll never forget the day Jerry Rubin, the Yippie provocateur, spoke on campus, exhorting the crowd to spike the water supply with LSD. Instead of wild applause, the student audience just stared at him in silence; Rubin stalked angrily off the stage. I’d never been prouder of Pomona.

Indeed, though in those days as in these, leftism was the norm, those who took a different view got a respectable hearing in the dorms and dining halls.

No more. These kids have no regard for the once sacrosanct principle that even your enemies have a right to be heard. They are ugly-minded and vicious. And, unlike us, they know for an absolute certainty that there will be no consequences for their behavior. They make me despair for the future—if not of the country, then certainly for Claremont.

SOUTH DAKOTA: Former Muslim from Iran, now a Christian Pastor, scares the bejeezus out of people by speaking about the rising menace of Islam in America

 Washington state-based Pastor Shahram Hadian spoke about “Sabotaging America: Islam’s March Towards Supremacy” at a private presentation to large group in Sioux Falls.

Argus Leader Pastor Hadian was joined by Tennessee author Brannon Howse who spoke on “Genesis to Revelation: A Biblical Worldview Briefing on the Past, Current and Future World Events.”

Hadian, who was born in Iran and came to the U.S. as a young boy, warns audiences that Islam is not just a religion but a totalitarian system governing people’s lives. Americans must not let political correctness and tolerance keep them sidelined while Islam destroys their way of life, he said.

Wisely, the media were banned from the Sioux Falls event and were relegated to talking to the Muslim protestors  and their non-Muslim useful idiots. (The Muslims, as usual, had to show their supremacy by lifting their asses to Allah and praying outside the event)

Hadian planned to speak on the importance of “extreme vetting of Muslim immigrants,” the event’s registration page said, due to the “clear and present threat ISIS poses to America as they have boasted of placing their terrorists among the refugees flooding into America.”

Hadian’s messages, which paint Islam as a religion of violence, have drawn criticism from Islamic groups as representing a message of intolerance.  In February, Hadian’s ministry was listed as a hate group (as are ALL anti-Islam groups) by the George Soros-funded Southern Poverty Law Center.

Outside the conference hall Ismael Mulamba, 32, stood alongside Ali Elkafifi, 14, holding a sign that said, “No hate in SF.” The two men booed as a man in a pickup truck drove by and shouted out the window that “Islam is evil and that Muslims worship a false god.”

“We are all sons of God, whether we’re Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Hindu,” Mulamba said. He then looked toward the hotel and said, “They preach loving your neighbor as yourself, but the reason they are there is to promote hate and fear.”

BERLIN — The case of a British Jewish child forced to leave his Berlin school after being subjected to anti-Semitic violence has provoked outrage and soul-searching in Germany.

The 14-year-old, who cannot be named under child protection laws, was beaten, kicked and threatened with a replica gun after he revealed to fellow pupils that he was Jewish.

He endured a campaign of intimidation by Muslim pupils who told him “Muslims hate Jews. All Jews are murderers.”

His British mother, who asked not to be named to protect the identity of her son, told the The Daily Telegraph the school had done little to stop the bullying.

“They told us this is normal for adolescents from this background, that they’re just trying to find their identity,” she said. “But it shouldn’t be normal. I’ve never experienced such direct anti-Semitism before in all the years I’ve lived in Germany.”…

“In some German mosques, anti-Semitism is being actively encouraged,” said Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

The boy at the centre of the most recent case was born in London to a German father and British mother, but the family moved to Berlin when he was a baby and he has lived there all his life.

Ironically, his family chose the Friedenauer Gemeinschaftsschule in part because they were attracted to the school’s ethnic mix. The majority of pupils at the school are Muslim.

The trouble started when he attended a class on religion and told his fellow pupils he was Jewish.

“It was natural for him to tell them. It wouldn’t occur to him to hide it,” his mother said. “The next day was his birthday. He was looking forward to going to school – he had this friend and they were planning to rap together.”

But the other child asked her son if he was really Jewish. “He said, ‘Listen, you’re a cool guy, but I can’t be friends with you. Muslims aren’t friends with Jews, ” she said.

The boy was later pushed and threatened. On one occasion, another pupil hit him twice in the back.

The family arranged for the boy’s grandparents – both Holocaust survivors – to give a talk to pupils. But his mother remained dismayed at the lack of support from the school. “They didn’t want to know,” she said.

One older pupil pulled a replica gun on the boy, leading to his parents decided to move him to another school….

Australia: Muslims assault Orthodox Christian while screaming “F*** Jesus”

Transport police stood by and did nothing. After all, Greek Orthodox Christians do not have protected victim status; Muslims do. The officers no doubt did not want to appear “Islamophobic.”

WHILE we constantly are lectured about Islamophobic violence, despite little evidence of its existence, there is official silence about its flip side: religiously motivated attacks on Christians.

One Greek community leader, Rev George Capsis, has gone so far as to warn Christians not to wear overt religious symbols when they are travelling though Muslim enclaves of southwestern Sydney.

But last Tuesday afternoon, 30-year-old Greek Orthodox Christian, Mike, discovered too late the risks of wearing a large cross outside his clothing while travelling on the train from Campsie to Bankstown with his girlfriend.

He says he was minding his own business talking on his mobile phone, when four young men of Middle Eastern appearance allegedly violently ripped the crucifix off his neck, and stomped on it while swearing “F*** Jesus” and referring to “Allah”.

He says they punched him and kicked him in his face, back and shoulders during the attack which began about 3pm, just after the train left Belmore station.

When his girlfriend tried to defend him, two Arabic-speaking women also allegedly hit and kicked her.

The crucifix, which his mother had given him, was bent, and the silver chain broken in two places.

“I was born in Australia of Greek heritage,” says Mike. “I’ve always worn my cross. For him to rip it off and step on it has to be a religious crime… It’s not on to feel unsafe in your own country.”…

He claims that five uniformed railway “Transport Officers” watched the attack and did nothing to help him, although police were waiting for the train when it reached Bankstown station.Two police officers took the names of three alleged assailants and a statement from Mike, photographed his injuries, told him they would review CCTV footage from the train and that he should expect a letter in a month, which may require his attendance at court….

Capsis claims Mike is the fourth Christian who has complained to him of a religiously-motivated attack in the past six months.“This is not an isolated incident. There are gangs of these young fellows of Muslim background who have been harassing people they identify as Christian… You don’t hear about it because no one’s reporting it.”

The other three attacks Capsis says have occurred around public transport in southwest Sydney: “It’s like their territory; they don’t want Christians or other types of infidels there…

“People like Greek Orthodox carry a big cross. I tell them to be practical and if they’re in those areas and wearing a big cross and a group of young guys comes, hide it in your shirt. Why provoke it?

“If this keeps up, someone will be hurt. It’s got to be nipped in the bud.”…

There have been isolated reports of anti-Christian abuse in recent years, such as churchgoers in Sydney’s west copping death threats from men driving past in a car bearing the Islamic State flag….But there are no hashtags for Christians like Mike when they ride on Sydney trains.

Globalist Google Now Unilaterally Labeling Stories It Dislikes as ‘Fake News’

Google is to start displaying fact-checking labels in its search results to highlight news and information that has been vetted and show whether it is considered to be true or false, as part of its efforts to help combat the spread of misinformation and fake news.

The fact-checking feature, which was first introduced to Google News in the UK and US in October, will now be displayed as an information box in general search results as well as news search results globally.

The small snippets display information about the claim made by a particular page or site and who made the claim, as well as the results of fact checking on the highlighted claim. The fact checks are not performed by Google, but by named trusted publishers and fact-checkers using an open system to mark claims as having been checked.


Cong Yu from Google and Justin Kosslyn from fact-check partner Jigsaw said: “With thousands of new articles published online every minute of every day, the amount of content confronting people online can be overwhelming. And unfortunately, not all of it is factual or true, making it hard for people to distinguish fact from fiction . . .

College May Punish Students Who Disrupted Conservative’s Speech

Claremont McKenna College officials have announced possible repercussions for students who protested a conservative speaker’s speech last week.

Protesters successfully blocked students and professors from entering an on-campus building to hear Heather Mac Donald’s pro-police speech, as reported by The Daily Signal last Friday. Mac Donald is a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank.

In response, Hiram Chodosh, the president of Claremont McKenna College, or CMC, released a statement Friday, saying, “Blocking access to buildings violates College policy. CMC students who are found to have violated policies will be held accountable.”


Joann Young, director of media relations for CMC, elaborated on Chodosh’s statement, telling The College Fix in an email that students could face a variety of repercussions, including “temporary or permanent separation from the college.”

Steven Glick, a senior at Pomona College, one of the five undergraduate institutions that make up the Claremont Colleges alongside CMC, covered the protests as editor-in-chief of The Claremont Independent, an “independent journal of campus affairs and political thought” that is dedicated to “upholding truth and excellence at the Claremont Colleges,” according to its website. The publication receives no school funding.

“I wasn’t able to speak with many of the protesters and about what they were doing,” Glick said. “Several protesters prevented me from conducting interviews by pushing me, putting their hands and clothing in front of the camera, and shouting over anyone who did try to talk to me. Another correspondent from The [Claremont] Independent was threatened with physical violence while he attempted to interview protesters.”

Glick’s interactions with protesters were shared on The Claremont Independent’s Facebook page through Facebook Live.

Glick said it was evident many protesters “had no clue what was going on.”

“They chanted about Palestine for quite a while, which had nothing to do with Heather Mac Donald’s planned lecture,” Glick said. “It seems that protesters simply viewed Ms. Mac Donald as an opponent of progressivism, and felt it apt to chant about any progressive cause they could think of.”

Since CMC is one of eight institutions that make up the Claremont Colleges, many of the protesters were not students of CMC, and some, according to Glick, were not students at all. “Some of the protesters were middle-aged people who were clearly just there to help organize the protest,” Glick said.

When asked how students have responded to the protest, Glick said, “I get the sense that most students were disappointed that the protests led to the cancellation of the event, whether they agreed with Heather Mac Donald or not.”

As The Daily Signal previously reported, Peter Uvin, vice president of academic affairs for Claremont McKenna College, said in an email to students after the incident that he understands that “words hurt” and “people have strong opinions and different—often painful—experiences with the issues Heather Mac Donald discusses.”

Uvin went on to add that he “could not accept” students’ attempts “to make it impossible for her to speak, for you to listen, and for all of us to debate.”

In reaction to the administration’s response, Glick said:

The CMC administration should have had a bigger presence at the protest and told the students what consequences, if any, they would face for their actions. By remaining largely absent from the scene, they effectively gave the protesters a free pass.

The Left Seeks to Silence Pro-Life/Pro-Family Voices

Silencing your opponent. That is now the main response of the political left in America.

You have seen the footage of speakers on college campuses being shouted down. You have heard about the liberal professor attacked by students for defending a conservative professor. You have watched black-masked rioters smashing the windows of stores and burning cars.

We are told that views that may conflict with the liberal world-view are no more than violence and hate and therefore may be silenced.

The Troubling Relationship Between Soros and US’ Biggest Foreign Aid Agency

Foreign aid can help advance U.S. national interests, for example, by promoting our values globally or by demonstrating to the world the goodwill of the American people. Calls to eliminate funding outright often fail to weigh this important function.

But our lead aid agency has itself been jeopardizing this effort, and risking all-important public support, by irresponsibly funding leftist agitprop around the world—and enlisting the help of billionaire progressive activist George Soros in the process.

Trying to persuade Colombians, Macedonians, Kenyans, and the Irish to accept violations of traditional norms that are still being debated here was surely not what Congress had in mind when it passed the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and thereby created the U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID.

Support for wooly leftist causes around the globe, and teaming up with the vast network of Soros organizations trying to transform the world, isn’t new for USAID.

But for the past eight years, President Barack Obama politicized the agency to such a degree that six Republican senators in mid-March rightly called on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to launch an investigation into how the agency spends billions of taxpayer dollars.

The response from a mid-level career official at the Bureau of Legislative Affairs, Executive Secretary Joseph E. Macmanus, offered a pro-forma defense of USAID with sentences like, “The Department of State’s foreign assistance programs are rigorously designed, implemented, and monitored to ensure that they are based on core American values.”

Soros supporters are naturally pleased. But was the letter reflective of the administration’s political leadership? The slow pace of political appointments at the State Department—and throughout the executive branch—has created a situation where career bureaucrats and caretakers put in place by the previous administration retain an outsized influence.

In this instance, sources tell us that the letter the senators sent Tillerson never reached him. As I explained in the New York Post last Saturday, the Macmanus letter didn’t even acknowledge the senators’ request for a probe. Telling six senators, in essence, to take a hike is not wise at the best of times.

But it is especially unwise when the senators are raising legitimate concerns that resonate with Trump voters. What core American values were served in Colombia when USAID funds a Soros-owned media portal that attacks President Donald Trump, capitalism, and “patriarchal society”?

And what American values are served when USAID and Soros’ Open Society Foundations team up to teach Macedonians Alinskyite tactics, continuing a lamentable trend here in the states to redefine civics as street mobilization and representative democracy as “participative democracy”?

And what core American values, indeed, are served when we support same-sex marriage in countries like Ireland? The Supreme Court only read this right into the Constitution two years ago, in a hotly contested 5-4 decision that is far from settled even here.

Indeed, many of these ideas continue to be hotly debated between one part of the population that wants to retain traditional norms and another that wants to transform society.

As the senators’ letter asked, what do these things have to do with our national interests?

By refusing to heed the senators’ call, the career civil servants who have taken over our agencies were doing exactly what the Open Society Foundations requested. In an op-ed in Foreign Policy magazine two weeks ago, the head of the Open Society Initiative for Europe, Goran Buldioski, wrote that “Tillerson should ignore the letter, because there’s nothing to investigate.”

Buldioski smeared the U.S. senators, saying that their letter was “littered with inaccuracies about the foundations’ work,” and he trotted out the most tired trope in the Soros arsenal, that the “senators echo Kremlin talking points.” As I have argued here and here, it is precisely our promotion of tendentious radical ideas overseas that often drive conservatives who would ordinarily side with us into the arms of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But the most important part of the piece came not in these clichés, but in the argument Buldioski made when he said that the senators were asking Tillerson “to shut down democracy promotion that is ‘disrespecting national sovereignty.’ Such an interpretation assumes that governments are sacrosanct and sovereign, not the voters who elect them.” (Emphasis added).

That is a tempting argument. The individual certainly is ultimately sovereign in that his own conscience is the ultimate arbiter.

This separation between “national sovereignty” and “individual sovereignty” is not new, however, but has been emphasized by those who argue for transnational governance.

In a speech in Stockholm in 2009 in which he expounded on the subject, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said, for example: “We are now living in a true global age. We are interconnected as never before. Frontiers are increasingly irrelevant. Nation-states are increasingly powerless to act alone in the face of global forces.”

But as my friends and colleagues David Azerrad and Arthur Milikh reminded me in an email exchange on this subject, classical liberalism views countries as sovereign in the international realm.

The opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution—“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another” and “We the people”—make this amply clear.

When a government stops securing the unalienable rights of people, it is their right “to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government.” But individuals form a sovereign “people,” and we can remain sovereign only if we remember the common good and the social contract.

Let’s debate these things some more here at home before we spend billions trying to persuade our friends to buy into them. How Free Trade and Economic Freedom Help the Poor

Today, many people argue that trade disproportionately hurts poor Americans.

They say free trade creates a wage gap between low- and high-income earners, and constructs barriers that make it increasingly difficult for the less fortunate to climb the economic ladder.

But recent data from The Heritage Foundation shows that this simply is not true.

The Heritage Foundation’s 2017 Index of Economic Freedom shows that removing tariffs and other trade barriers leads to a number of tremendous benefits.

The creation of freer trading conditions establishes a mutually beneficial relationship between both parties—people voluntarily trade with each other only if it is in their own interest.

As a result, those who have greater opportunity to participate in the global exchange of goods and services find themselves with increased prosperity and diminished poverty.

According to the Pew Research Center, from 2001 to 2011, the number of “poor” individuals—those living on less than $2 a day—decreased by 14 percent globally.

During the same period, world trade (as a percentage of gross domestic product) increased by over 9 percent, from 51.5 percent up to 60.7 percent.

This strong correlation between trade freedom and reductions in poverty seems to refute the narrative we often hear. Rather than hurting the poor, the removal of international trade barriers allows millions of impoverished people to escape poverty.

A recent report from the World Bank Group gives further support to this correlation. Based on the most recent estimates, while 35 percent of the world’s population lived on less than $1.90 a day in the year 1990, that percentage had dropped to 12.4 percent in 2012.

The percentage dropped even further in the year 2013 to 10.7 percent.

For a practical example of how trade barriers hurt the American poor, consider U.S. import restraints on food and clothing.

These inflict substantial financial burdens on the poor because they drive up the price of these goods, which make up a larger proportion of poor people’s incomes than of wealthy people’s incomes.

The Heritage Foundation’s Patrick Tyrrell and Daren Bakst show the effects of these restraints in their recent special report: Americans paid a 20 percent import tariff on some dairy products in 2016, a whopping 132 percent import tariff on certain peanut products, and up to a 35 percent import tariff on canned tuna.

Reducing or getting rid of tariffs will clearly reduce these prices for consumers, and will relieve a disproportionate amount of pressure from the poor.

But the benefits of economic freedom extend well beyond aiding the poor. The data show a strong correlation between economic freedom and other positive outcomes.

As James M. Roberts and Ryan Olson of The Heritage Foundation report, countries with higher levels of economic freedom have citizens who enjoy a longer life expectancy, take better care of the environment, and spend more time in school—an important factor for poverty reduction.

On trade and economic freedom, the data speak loud and clear. In order to further reduce global poverty, governments should promote economic freedom and allow their citizens to participate in and enjoy the benefits of free trade. 3 Reasons Democrats Just Made a Dumb Mistake

Now that the judicial filibuster in the U.S. Senate has been nuked, it’s time to look at the political fallout going forward. And for Democrats, the news is all bad. Here are three reasons why Democrats just made a dumb mistake by filibustering Neil Gorsuch.

1. The GOP is now free to put real Scalia-Thomas types throughout the judiciary

The argument for years as to why Republicans needed stealth Supreme Court candidates like David Souter, Anthony Kennedy, and John Roberts (who have all gone on to be disappointments to varying degrees) was the filibuster.


However, now that it’s no longer necessary to get 60 votes for confirmation, there’s no need to appoint another Gorsuch-type whose record on Roe v. Wade is a gaping void. Nor is there anymore need to “play the game” during confirmation hearings, either, by having the “conservative” appointee approvingly repeat progressive talking points back to Democrats in an effort to gain their support.

Since it only requires a simple majority now, the GOP can freely confirm real heirs to Antonin Scalia. Where this could be a real benefit is throughout the federal circuit and district courts, which need an overhaul after decades of stockpiling progressives.

2. Let’s face it: Republicans were never gonna have the stones to partisan filibuster Democrat judicial nominees anyway

There’s literally no tradeoff here for Democrats, because we all know Republicans weren’t gonna have the stones to partisan filibuster in the future anyway. The GOP is the party that actually nominates for president the people who support — and vote for — the Democrats’ most progressive judicial nominees after all (see John McCain).

So this isn’t a case of “what goes around comes around” that benefits Democrats in the future; this is being too smart by half, and negotiating against yourself. In other words, this is a case of Democrats tactically acting like Republicans for once. They needlessly cornered the GOP into a position that forced them to actually draw a line in the sand, which isn’t exactly the GOP’s thing. (They ain’t called the “surrender caucus” for nothing.)

By doing so, Democrats helped set a precedent that will only benefit Republicans from here. For they gave Republicans leverage they never would’ve asserted on their own, while at the same time Democrats gave away leverage they’ve had all along.

3. This literally did nothing to elevate any Democrats politically

Even if you think the “Stand with Rand” and “Make DC Listen” filibusters by Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, respectively, were publicity stunts doomed to fail, at the very least both of those events inspired the GOP grassroots and elevated the national profiles of two of the party’s emerging stars.

Unfortunately for Democrats, the Gorsuch filibuster didn’t even do that. For example, the lackluster attempt by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., at filibustering this week didn’t generate nearly the attention Paul and Cruz’s did, even from a more-than-sympathetic media.

At the very least, if you’re going to contrive political theater, have someone who excites your base and could be your future standard-bearer as the face of it. Instead, Democrats came out of a fake fight without any real stars to rally behind. A missed opportunity, especially with the country already seeming to start to tire of President Trump.

In short, the Democrats’ Gorsuch filibuster accomplished more for Republicans than it did for Democrats, because it accomplished nothing for the latter. If this is what the “resistance” looks like, it’s going to have to try a lot harder. No one else would act to punish Syrian President Assad for using chemical weapons. Ideally, it would be the United Nations, but nobody has taken them seriously since Korea. How about we just quit the UN, tell them to leave New York City, and go somewhere else — like Brussels maybe? That city can have two useless international bureaucracies to COEXIST with the 300,000 Muslims who live there. Can you picture it? One big, multicultural city full of smiling, happy people holding hands? It’s a  fitting image for the capitol of the EU and the UN, right? Just watch out for airport bombers and careening trucks.

Trump let the world know last week that he’s not Barack liar-nObama, and that’s worth something. He’s not a wuss and he’s not predictable. Now Kim Jong Un can worry that Trump might do to him what he’s threatening to do to us — at any time. Iran can worry too. It won’t likely capture any more US sailors in the Persian Gulf with President Trump as commander-in-chief. All that is great.

It’s not good, however that Trump has put US Marines in Syria. That is contrary to what he said during the campaign. A month ago I wrote about the danger:

[Ethnic groups like the] Sunni Kurds, for example, are a minority in the border areas of Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey — all of which, along with Russia now, are fighting ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Kurds want to be a nation-state too, but none of the aforementioned countries will cede them their ancestral territory which overlaps all. The US is arming Kurds. Last week, President Trump put US Marines on the ground in Syria. US soldiers must now fight alongside all these groups — some of which are still fighting each other — against ISIS. What could possibly go wrong?

A lot could go wrong, of course, especially after last week’s missile attack. Trump got a lot of votes promising not to mess around in the Middle East without a clear US national interest. Sending in the Marines contradicts his “America First” rhetoric.

Among the sixteen Republicans running in 2016, Trump was my last choice, below John Kasich. He won the nomination and I resigned myself to vote for him, but I wrote several columns detailing my concerns last fall. I won’t go into detail again here: suffice it to say that liar-Hillary was “the devil you know” and Trump was “the devil you don’t,” but I went against the prevailing wisdom that the devil you know is preferable. However Trump turns out, I figured, he wouldn’t be nearly as bad as liar-Hillary would be.

People from different parts of the country who read those columns wrote me about their support for Trump. He alone, they claimed, had guts enough to kick a** in Washington. He certainly had the confidence, but my misgivings remained. Democrats and Republicans both needed serious a**-kicking, yes, but would Trump be the best one to do it? I’m still not sure.

During transition, he picked an outstanding cabinet but it also became evident early in that process that liar-nObama was laying mines for him. Days before his term ended, liar-nObama signed an executive order making wiretap transcripts of Trump campaign officials available to hundreds of people in sixteen different intelligence agencies. This made leaking hundreds of times more likely. If that wasn’t liar-nObama’s intention, it’s hard to imagine what was. Democrats and Mainstream Media — please excuse the redundancy— were, and are, out to get Trump, no question. They’ve pulled out all the stops, but Trump is fighting back and they’re not used to that. They coined the term “fake news,” to use against him, for example, only to have Trump immediately turn it around on them. That was brilliant.

Trump’s inaugural speech was wonderful, echoing what he promised during his campaign. Many of his tweets, however, reflect an obsession with inaugural crowds and the number of electoral votes he got compared to other recently-elected presidents. His claims were obviously erroneous and they undercut his leadership. I found myself wishing his advisors would take his phone away or at least temper his impulsivity. It’s embarrassing. When asked my opinion of our president lately I say I still don’t like him, but I like what he’s doing — except for the tweets and the troop deployments.

After Missile Strike in Syria, Trump Must Avoid Mission Creep!-Posted on The Daily Signal-By James Phillips-On April 9, 2017:

On April 6, President Donald Trump ordered a cruise missile strike against the Syrian airfield used by the warplanes that launched last week’s chemical attack against Syrian civilians.

This strike was an appropriate, proportional, and carefully calibrated response for the Assad regime’s repeated use of illegal chemical weapons.

While it was a bold tactical strike that sent a powerful message that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s behavior was unacceptable, it is merely the opening bid in what is likely to develop into a protracted diplomatic crisis.

Trump reacted viscerally to the pictures of poisoned babies and moved decisively to launch the punitive reprisal. But that limited military action is unlikely to be decisive in and of itself.

Since the missile strike, Assad has already sent warplanes from the same base to bomb the rebel-held village of Khan Sheikhoun again, this time with conventional weapons.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose government guaranteed that Assad had given up all his chemical weapons in 2013, has chosen to remain entrenched in denial.

Moscow has raised the stakes by dispatching a Russian destroyer to patrol off Syria’s coast and by ending the deconfliction arrangement, which had lowered the risk of Russian-American military clashes in the skies over Syria.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson travels to Moscow on Tuesday to further engage diplomatically on Syria with Putin’s government. But the prospects for a quick resolution of the crisis are very poor.

The Humanitarian Impulse

No good deed goes unpunished in the Middle East. The Trump administration should keep this in mind, as well as the experience of past U.S. administrations, as it charts its future course.

President George H.W. Bush also reacted viscerally to news reports of starvation in Somalia and mounted an admirable response when he launched Operation Restore Hope in December 1992, airlifting emergency food aid to that failed state.

But that humanitarian aid mission was later expanded into a failed nation-building experiment by the Clinton administration, which discovered that one of the biggest obstacles to feeding starving Somalians was pilferage of food supplies by warlords leading local militias.

This oxymoronic “humanitarian war” in Somalia saw U.S. troops back up a United Nations peacekeeping force and clash with fierce local militias, some of them trained and assisted by al-Qaeda.

The death of 18 American special operations troops in Mogadishu in October 1993, when two of their helicopters were shot down, led to the termination of the operation in 1994.

Humanitarian operations also produce unintended consequences. The U.S. humanitarian intervention in Somalia was perceived as an unacceptable act of imperialism by Osama bin Laden, then living in nearby Sudan.

Al-Qaeda launched its first attack on Americans in December 1992 when it planted a bomb in a hotel in Yemen, which was being used by U.S. Marines traveling to Somalia to assist the food distribution. Although the Marines had already departed, two people were killed at the hotel.

President Ronald Reagan was not so lucky when he dispatched U.S. Marines to Lebanon as part of an international peacekeeping force to stabilize that country in 1982 after Lebanese President-elect Bashir Gemayel was assassinated by a Syrian agent.

Hezbollah terrorists directed by Iran later launched a truck bomb attack against the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 Americans on Oct. 23, 1983.

As a result, the international peacekeeping force was withdrawn in 1984 and Lebanon increasingly fell under the malign influence of Syria and Iran for years after that.

If Trump now introduced U.S. troops into Syria, they too would become a lightning rod for Islamist terrorism launched by al-Qaeda, ISIS, or Hezbollah and other Shiite extremist militias from Iraq, which Iran has deployed to prop up Assad.

The Trump administration should bear this in mind and rule out the idea of expanding its current military commitment to destroy ISIS in eastern Syria into a broader military push to topple Assad.

What Next?

Washington has warned that it will take prompt action if the Assad regime launches another chemical attack.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley, who has quickly emerged as the moral voice of the administration, told a special session of the U.N. Security Council on Friday that: “The United States will no longer wait for Assad to use chemical weapons without any consequences. Those days are over.”

She warned that “[the] United States took a very measured step last night. We are prepared to do more, but we hope that will not be necessary.”

It would be foolhardy for Assad to use chemical weapons again. If he did, Trump could respond with a targeted strike on Assad similar to Reagan’s 1986 airstrike targeting Libyan dictator Muammar Qadhafi.

Reagan clearly did not expect to end Libyan terrorism in a one-shot quick fix when he launched the 1986 airstrike. He described the reprisal as “but a single engagement in a long battle against terrorism” and threatened future reprisals if Qadhafi continued to support terrorist attacks against the U.S.

Focus on Chemical Weapons, Not Regime Change

The Trump administration should remain focused on the key problem at hand—Assad’s chemical weapons threat—and not seek to expand the military mission to include regime change.

That kind of mission creep would bog down U.S. military forces in Syria for years, fighting not only the Assad regime, but Hezbollah, Iran, and possibly Russia.

Regime change is a bridge too far. Once crossing it, the Trump administration would inherit the responsibility to spend more blood and treasure to cobble together the shards of a failed state infested with over 1,000 fractious militias, many of them anti-American.

While Assad has lost all legitimacy as the leader of the Syrian government, his eventual removal from power should be a long-term diplomatic goal, not a military goal.

But the Trump administration can indirectly raise the military costs of Assad’s chemical aggression by providing greater aid to select Syrian rebel groups—who have no links to ISIS, al-Qaeda, and other Islamist terrorists—or to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.

The defeat of ISIS should remain the top U.S. military priority in Syria, not regime change in Damascus. The most practical and effective humanitarian policy that Washington can provide to Syrians is to quickly destroy ISIS and relentlessly deter future chemical attacks by the Assad regime.

Our Broken Promises in Iraq

More important than bad intel from past conflicts, remember the promises we made to Iraq and its people. We swore that we would bring freedom, order, and prosperity. Do we even remember that now?

Iraqis do. With bitterness.

In January I traveled to Iraq and Kurdistan, researching a film I’m making. Its heroes? The one million Christians who were purged from their ancient homeland, right under our soldier’s noses. (Our men were following orders, and the Bush administration never ordered them to prevent it.) I’m documenting these and other religious refugees as they fight for their faith and their families. As they cling to their human dignity in the wasteland we left behind.

As I made my way toward Mosul, I passed through the legacy of our last “humanitarian” intervention. Our last war against a war criminal. Our proud patriots’ achievement stretched out before me as I snaked down the dusty roads: one abandoned settlement after another. Some places with noble and ancient names were now neatly organized piles of rubble.

While I was still in Kurdistan I finally got overwhelmed. I met with local imams, whose people had suffered alongside the Christians. As The Stream has reported, those groups now fight together against ISIS. They also fight al Qaeda, and its Turkish sponsors and allies. After I heard their stories, I blurted out an apology. “I’m sorry. Americans are sorry that we invaded then abandoned you.”

The imam nodded solemnly, and addressed me with great dignity. “We know that Americans think they are responsible for the actions of their government. We are not so naive. Americans are good people. Your elite must play on your goodness even to do evil.”

A Long Series of Half-Truths & War Propaganda

As responsible citizens, it’s our duty to listen skeptically when men with power call us to war. We owe at least that much to the victims of past mistakes. It has become standard practice in American war-making to take some atrocity, inflate it or invent it and use it to sell a war to the general public. The spurious “Gulf of Tonkin Incident” sold us the whole Vietnam War.

We were sold the first Gulf War in part by the fiction that Iraqi soldiers were yanking premature babies out of incubators in Kuwait. (The “witness” who spoke before Congress was a relative of Kuwait’s ambassador, coached by a PR firm.) There were good reasons for liberating Kuwait. So why did our leaders decide to lie to us? Do they think we can’t be trusted with the truth?

In the three months since I’ve returned to our peaceful shores, I’ve been haunted by what I saw. By the fathers who choked up as they told me what happened to their daughters. By the pastors who were still picking through the ruins of ancient churches. By the ruin left behind by irresponsible politicians. Now I wonder whether my son will risk his life to pile up rubble in yet another country.
