On August 5, 2015, Barack Obama gave a speech at American University in Washington D.C. spelling out the imagined fruits of his recently signed Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and six world powers including Russia, China, and the US. It was Obama’s signature achievement, and he and his minions had been selling it hard for the previous two years.

Boasted Obama, “After two years of negotiations, we have achieved a detailed arrangement that permanently prohibits Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. It cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a bomb. It contains the most comprehensive inspection and verification regime ever negotiated to monitor a nuclear program.”

Obama never said the exact words “peace for our time” as British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had in selling out Czechoslovakia to appease Adolph Hitler in 1938, but he might as well have. The immediate price Obama paid to get the Iranian deal was $56 billion in unfrozen assets. He sweetened the deal a few months later with $1.7 billion delivered in cash. The long term price was peace in the region.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin smiled throughout the bargaining like the Cheshire Cat. The New York Times noted Russia’s “lightning effort to capitalize on the deal.” The Russians had been indispensable, and they knew it.

As Obama told Tom Friedman of the New York Times, “We would have not achieved this agreement had it not been for Russia’s willingness to stick with us and the other P5-Plus members in insisting on a strong deal.” In July 2015, it was still respectable for an American president to cozy up to Putin. Just a year later, Team Obama would be framing Putin as Donald Trump’s evil collaborator.

The Iran deal’s chief salesman was Obama policy advisor, Ben Rodes, brother of then CBS News president David Rhodes. Rhodes understood the way the media worked in the realm of foreign policy. Major newspapers used to have foreign bureaus, he told David Samuels writing for the the New York Times Magazine. They no longer did. “They call us to explain to them what’s happening in Moscow and Cairo.”

Ben Rhodes and Obama “mind meld”

Rhodes boasted, “We created an echo chamber. They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.” This did not surprise Rhodes given that the “average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.”

Back to American University. “Now, let me pause here,” Obama told his audience, “just to remind everybody that when the interim deal was announced, critics—the same critics we’re hearing from now—called it ‘a historic mistake.’ They insisted Iran would ignore its obligations. They warned that sanctions would unravel. They warned that Iran would receive a windfall to support terrorism.”

“The critics were wrong,” said Obama. No, Barry, they weren’t. Although Obama dismissed the notion that “all this money,” namely the $56 billion, would be “funneled into Iran’s pernicious activities,” he knew better himself and all but admitted it.

“Let’s stipulate that some of that money will flow to activities that we object to. We have no illusions about the Iranian government, or the significance of the Revolutionary Guard and the Quds Force. Iran supports terrorist organizations like Hezbollah.” He rationalized this concession by saying, “Iran has always found a way to fund these efforts.” To achieve this seeming success, Obama was willing to overlook “these efforts.”

What particularly troubled David Samuels was Team Obama’s willingness to put false stories into play to get public support. One such story was that Obama and his people began to engage with Iran only after moderates came to power in 2013. According to Samuels, that story was “largely manufactured for the purpose for selling the deal.”

The Obama White House entered these talks well before the moderates took power, and “power” in this case was an illusion. The Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had “handpicked” these alleged moderates, who did little more than provide cover for the nuclear deal. Rhodes preferred they turned out to be reformers, but, as he admitted, “We are not betting on that.” Rhodes made no bones, said Samuels, that his efforts represented “a potentially dangerous distortion of democracy.”

Concluded Obama, “I’ve had to make a lot of tough calls as President, but whether or not this deal is good for American security is not one of those calls. It’s not even close.”

Said Chamberlain upon returning to 10 Downing Street from his comparable success in Munich, ”My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time...We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Now I recommend you go home and sleep quietly in your beds.”

What Churchill was to Chamberlain, Trump is to Obama: the guy left to clean up the mess.
