DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The U.S. and Israel launched a major attack on targets across Iran on Saturday, and U.S. President Trump called on the Iranian people to “take over your government” — an extraordinary appeal that suggested the allies could be seeking to end the country’s theocracy after decades of tensions.

The first strikes of the attack appeared to target the compound home to Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in downtown Tehran. It wasn’t immediately clear if he was there at the time. Smoke could be seen rising from the Iranian capital.

“For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted Death to America and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder, targeting the United States, our troops and the innocent people in many, many countries,” Trump said in a video posted on social media that sought to justify the attacks. He urged Iranians to take cover during the strikes, but then: “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take.”

The attack quickly expanded beyond Iran. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said it responded by launching a “first wave” of drones and missiles targeting Israel, where a nationwide warning was issued as the military said it brought down Iranian fire.

Meanwhile, Bahrain said that a missile attack targeted the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in the island kingdom. Witnesses heard sirens and explosions in Kuwait, home to U.S. Army Central. Explosions could also be heard in Qatar.

Iraq and the United Arab Emirates closed their airspace, and sirens sounded in Jordan. Shrapnel from an attack on the capital of the UAE killed one person, state media said, the first known fatality in the Iranian counterattack.

The Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen, meanwhile, vowed to resume attacks on Red Sea shipping routes and on Israel, according to two senior Houthi officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement from the Houthi leadership.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a defiant statement, saying that the country “will not hesitate” in its response. In a statement posted on X, the ministry said: “The time has come to defend the homeland and confront the enemy’s military assault.”

’Major combat operations’

Tensions have soared in recent weeks as American warships moved into the region, and Trump said he wanted a deal to constrain Iran’s nuclear program. He saw an opportunity while the country was struggling at home with growing dissent following nationwide protests.

On Saturday, Trump said in the video that the U.S. had begun “major combat operations in Iran.” Trump claimed that Iran has continued to develop its nuclear program and plans to develop missiles to reach the U.S. He acknowledged that there could be American casualties following Iran strikes, saying “that often happens in war.”

But Trump’s statement indicated the U.S. was striking for reasons far beyond the nuclear program, listing grievances stretching back to the beginning of the Islamic republic following a revolution in 1979 that turned Iran from one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East into a fierce foe.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel — which considers Iran its archenemy — said the joint attack was to “remove an existential threat posed” by Iran.

“Our joint operation will create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their fate into their own hands,” Netanyahu said.

Targets in the Israeli campaign included Iran’s military, symbols of government and intelligence targets, according to an official briefed on the operation, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss nonpublic information on the attack.

Iran had hoped to avert a war, but maintains it has the right to enrich uranium and does not want to discuss other issues, like its long-range missile program or support for armed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.

Iran has said it hasn’t enriched since June, but it has blocked international inspectors from visiting the sites America bombed during a 12-day war then. Satellite photos analyzed by The Associated Press have shown new activity at two of those sites, suggesting Iran is trying to assess and potentially recover material there.

Iran currently has a self-imposed limit on its ballistic missile program, limiting their range to 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles). That puts all the Mideast and some of Eastern Europe in their range. There is no public evidence of Iran seeking to have intercontinental ballistic missiles, though Washington has criticized its space program as potentially allowing it to one day.

Iran retaliates

Hours after the strikes, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said it launched a “first wave” of drones and missiles targeting Israel. It had vowed to respond if attacked, including saying American military personnel and bases spread across the region would be targets.

Explosions rocked Israel as the country worked to intercept incoming Iranian missiles.

Several hospitals in Israel launched their emergency protocols, including moving patients and surgeries to underground facilities.

U.S. Embassies or Consulates in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Israel posted on social media that they told staffers to shelter in place and recommended all Americans “do the same until further notice.”

Strikes hit targets across Iran

Iranian media reported strikes nationwide. Roads to Khamenei’s compound in downtown Tehran had been shut down by authorities as other blasts rang out across the capital.

In Tehran, witnesses heard the first blast by Khamenei’s office. Iranian state television later reported on the explosion, without offering a cause.

More explosions struck Iran’s capital after Israel said it was attacking the country. Authorities have offered no casualty information from the strikes.

‘We’re Not Going To Put Up With It Any Longer’: President Trump Announces ‘Massive And Ongoing Operation’ Against Iran!-Posted on The Daily Caller-By Thomas Wong, Weekend editor-On February 28, 2026:

The United States military launched targeted strikes Saturday against the Islamic Republic of Iran, following the escalation of tensions between the two powers and an apparent breakdown in diplomatic negotiations.

President Donald Trump posted an eight-minute video to Truth Social announcing the “massive and ongoing” attacks, identified as Operation Epic Fury, which are targeting Iran’s military and its nuclear program, as well as to facilitate a change in its government.

“Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime, a vicious group of very hard, terrible people,” the president declared in the video posted Saturday at 2:30 a.m. EST. “Its menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas, and our allies throughout the world.”

“We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground,” Trump vowed. “We are going to annihilate their navy, we are going to ensure that the region’s terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region and the world.”

Iran, he claimed, “attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and continue developing long range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas and could soon reach our American homeland.”

While it remains unclear if any U.S. troops have been deployed alongside the strikes, Trump warned that “the Iranian regime seeks to kill. The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties. That often happens in war, but we’re doing this for the future.”

He also urged the Iranian military to “lay down your weapons and have complete immunity or, in the alternative, face certain death.”

To the Iranian people, Trump noted, “For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it. No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight. Now you have a president who is giving you what you want, so let’s see how you respond.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a video statement that his country launched Operation Lion’s Roar, a preemptive “joint operation” with the U.S. against the “existential threat” posed by Iran. The operation would, he said, “create the conditions for the brave Iranian people to take their destiny into their own hands.”

“This murderous terrorist regime must not be allowed to arm itself with nuclear weapons that would enable it to threaten all of humanity,” he stated.

The U.S. ally’s military subsequently announced it “identified missiles launched from Iran toward Israel.” U.S. Embassy staff in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain were instructed to shelter in place. Non-emergency personnel at the U.S. embassy in Israel were authorized Friday to immediately depart the country due to “safety risks.”

“Now is the time to defend the homeland and confront the enemy’s military aggression,” Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in a statement responding to the strikes. “Just as we were ready for negotiations, we have been more prepared than ever for defense. The armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will respond to the aggressors with authority.”

“History testifies that Iranians have never surrendered to foreign aggression and hegemony; this time too, the response of the Iranian nation will be decisive and determining and will make the aggressors regret their criminal act,” the Iranian statement concluded.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, hours before the attack, also announced the U.S. designation of Iran as a “State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention.” In addition, the congressional leadership comprising the “Gang of Eight” were reportedly briefed of the attack hours before it began, following a separate Tuesday briefing by Rubio. He will reportedly travel to Israel in the next week.

The assault was supported by an armada of American naval and air assets recently amassed within striking distance of their targets. The Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, and its strike group sailed into the Mediterranean Sea, complementing that of carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. Fourteen destroyers, in addition to dozens of support vessels, fighter jets, unmanned drones, helicopters, and defense systems, further manifested Trump’s Jan. 13 promise on Truth Social to “Iranian Patriots” that “HELP IS ON ITS WAY.” (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Department Of War Reveals Game Plan For Massive Armada It’s Creating)

Trump previously hinted at consequences for Iran if the weeks of negotiations in Switzerland — conducted as recent as Thursday — failed to make meaningful progress, remarking at the Feb. 19 convening of the Board of Peace in Washington, “It’s proven to be, over the years, not easy to make a meaningful deal with Iran. Otherwise bad things happen.”

“We’re going to make a deal or get a deal one way or the other,” Trump said Feb. 18 to a room full of the nation’s governors.

Trump claimed Feb. 20 that 32,000 Iranians had been killed after the regime cracked down on weeks of widespread protests and unrest over the deteriorating national economy. At one point, Trump has claimed, Iran was set to execute over 800 detained dissidents until the president publicly weighed in on their behalf. Iran’s top prosecutor on Jan. 23, however, called Trump’s claim “completely false.”

While Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, admitted Feb. 14 that thousands of Iranians had been killed during chaos, he blamed Trump for having “openly encouraged” the dissidents’ uprising by offering “military support.” He also called Trump a “criminal” responsible “both for the casualties and the damage,” Reuters reported.

Khamenei was reportedly not in Tehran when the strikes were launched.

The strike follows U.S. military action in June 2025 targeting Iran’s weaponized uranium enrichment capabilities. Operation Midnight Hammer involved seven B-2 stealth bombers flying 37 hours across the world armed with 14 30,000-pound GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators bunker-busting munitions.

Trump has ordered seven military strikes in other nations since returning to the White House in January 2025.

“As president, I will make peace wherever I can, but I will never hesitate to confront threats to America wherever we must,” Trump declared Tuesday night during his State of the Union address. “For decades, it has been the policy of the United States never to allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon. Many decades. Since they seized control of that proud nation 47 years ago, the regime and its murderous proxies have spread nothing but terrorism and death and hate. They’ve killed and maimed thousands of American service members and hundreds of thousands and even millions of people.”

“They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words, ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon.’ My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy,” the president vowed at the time. “But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s No. 1 sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon. The U.S. and Israel launched a massive joint military attack early Saturday against Iran, as President Trump urged the Iranian people to “take over your government” and called on members of the Islamic republic’s military to immediately surrender or be killed.

The attack appears to be a U.S.-led attempt at regime change after decades of hardline Islamic rule in Tehran and represents the most sweeping American military operation in the Middle East since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Unlike past U.S. and Israeli strikes, which were more targeted, the ongoing mission is vast in scope and appears designed to topple Iran’s political leadership and crush its military.

Iran responded quickly by firing waves of missiles at targets across the region, including Israel and U.S. bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and elsewhere across the Middle East. There were explosions reported near the Saudi capital of Riyadh as the spiraling conflict spilled over into at least six other countries.

Mr. Trump warned there could be American casualties from the operation, which is targeting key Iranian military sites and government sites, including a reported strike on the compound home of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in downtown Tehran. The 86-year-old’s whereabouts weren’t immediately clear.

The operation effectively ends what had been an intense U.S. diplomatic campaign to pressure Iran into a new deal limiting its nuclear program. Key Trump administration officials met with an Iranian delegation on Thursday in Geneva, but the talks ended without an agreement.

The U.S. also wanted limits on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for violent proxy groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Mr. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the way those talks were unfolding and signaled that he was considering a major military strike.

Mr. Trump has been threatening military action against Iran since the country’s security forces unleashed a violent crackdown on domestic protesters last month. Thousands were reported to have been killed in that crackdown, which drew widespread condemnation abroad and exposed what some analysts viewed as the regime’s underlying vulnerability at home among its citizens.

The president promised Iranian demonstrators on Jan. 13 that “help is on its way.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was preparing Congress for the administration’s attack on Iran in the days leading up to the strikes, a State Department official explained to the Daily Caller.

President Donald Trump announced via video message at 2:57 AM on Saturday that his administration had begun to strike Iran in order to eliminate imminent “threats from the Iranian regime.” Ahead of the attacks, Rubio consulted with the “Gang of Eight” in an hour long briefing Tuesday, a State Department official told the Caller. The Gang of Eight consists of both Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress who are briefed on classified matters by the executive branch.

Rubio was able to connect with seven of the eight members, as one was unreachable, the official added. The Department of War also provided notifications to Armed Services Committees early this morning after strikes had commenced, the official told the Caller.

Rubio is currently in Mar-a-Lago with the president, the official added.

Democratic Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes, the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said the administration has entered a “war of choice with no strategic endgame.”

“As I expressed to Secretary Rubio when he briefed the Gang of Eight, military action in the region almost never ends well for the United States, and conflict with Iran can easily spiral and escalate in ways we cannot anticipate,” Himes added.

Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the Senate Select Committee Vice Chairman, stated “The president owes the country clear answers: What is the objective? What is the strategy to prevent escalation? And how does this make Americans safer?”

Speaker Mike Johnson struck a more optimistic tone, writing on X, “Today, Iran is facing the severe consequences of its evil actions. President Trump and the Administration have made every effort to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions in response to the Iranian regime’s sustained nuclear ambitions and development, terrorism, and the murder of Americans—and even their own people.”

The White House and the Department of War referred the Caller to the president’s video message for insight on his thought process behind the attack.

The president said in his message that Iran “rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions.” He called the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and the armed forces to lay down their weapons in order to have complete immunity. 

“It has always been the policy of the United States, in particular, my administration, that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I’ll say it again, they can never have a nuclear weapon,” the president said in his message.

“We are going to destroy their missiles and raise their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again, obliterated. We’re going to annihilate their navy,” Trump continued.

“We’re going to ensure that the region’s terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or the world and attack our forces and no longer use their IEDs or roadside bombs, as they are sometimes called, to so gravely wound and kill 1000s and 1000s of people, including many Americans. And we will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon. It’s a very simple message,” he added.

He told the outlet his main concern is “freedom” for the Iranian people, and added that his administration is “is working to make Iran a place that’s ‘safe.'”

In his video message, Trump encouraged the Iranian people to stay inside until the attacks were over and then work to take over the government.

“When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations. For many years, you have asked for America’s help, but you never got it. No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight,” Trump said.

Just days before the attack, Department of War press secretary Kingsley Wilson explained the game plan in Iran to the Caller. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Department Of War Reveals Game Plan For Massive Armada It’s Creating) 

“We’ve got a lot of assets over there, a lot of aircraft over there, and we’re going to make sure that the Iranian people know we mean business, and the regime and the mullahs there particularly, know we mean business. They remember Midnight Hammer and the success of that operation. They also, like the rest of the world and our enemies, watched the Maduro raid,” Wilson told the Caller.

“They see what the United States military, and only the United States military is capable of doing so, it would be very wise for them to make a deal with this president. And I would also add that the president has been clear, whether on the campaign trail or throughout his entire presidency, that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. That is a red line, and we at the Department of War are in full support of that initiative,” Wilson concluded.

A State Department official confirmed to the Caller that they have set up a task force to assist American citizens in the Middle East and support diplomatic efforts in the region.
