President Trump told the United Nations on Tuesday that he is confronting global challenges while others dither and would not let the midterm elections dictate whether he strikes a deal with Iran or moves to “annihilate” the Middle Eastern country.
Mr. Trump threatened to drive Iran “into hell” if the regime refuses to drop its nuclear ambitions, an eyebrow-raising threat during a whirlwind day that featured his address to the General Assembly, a Greenland security pact and meetings with the leaders of Britain, Japan and Ukraine.
“I have a big decision to make,” Mr. Trump told gathered leaders. “Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?”
Later in the day, Mr. Trump said the U.S. and Iranian delegations had a “very good meeting,” though he reissued his threat.

“I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t want to. It’s greatness, potential greatness, or obliteration,” Mr. Trump said during a series of bilateral meetings.
Mr. Trump used Iran as an example of his do-it-now approach to leadership, which served as the theme of his annual address to the United Nations General Assembly.
He said great leaders must use the little time they have to shape the world, so he refuses to let problems such as Iran fester.
“While others have talked, I have acted. While others have spoken of peace, I have made it. While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them,” Mr. Trump said. “While others have talked of courage, America has shown it.”
Mr. Trump said Iran is the “No. 1 sponsor of terror” whose “mad dash” toward a nuclear weapon left him no choice but to launch airstrikes with Israel on Feb. 28.
Tehran retaliated by hindering oil traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and striking America’s allies in the Persian Gulf region, sparking nearly seven months of military bombing, ceasefires and attempts at diplomacy.
Mr. Trump said Iran is waiting to see how Republicans fare in the November elections, given the war’s unpopularity at home. The president told Tehran not to bother.
“It doesn’t even enter my mind. The only thing that does is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” Mr. Trump said.
Michael Rubin, director of policy analysis at the Middle East Forum, said he is critical of Mr. Trump, “but it is a breath of fresh air for a president to lead irrespective of polls.”
“There is a fundamental breakdown of logic among those Republicans who demand an end to the war for the sake of the economy,” Mr. Rubin said. “Iran gets a vote, and if the U.S. turns around and leaves Iran in charge of the world’s most vital waterways, the pain we feel will be just the tip of the iceberg.”
The U.N. General Assembly is an annual gathering in New York that brings together all 193 members of the peace and security organization.
Leaders address the large hall, debate hot issues, make budget decisions and pass nonbinding resolutions.
Mr. Trump is skeptical of global alliances such as the United Nations. He says they are often ineffective and seek outsized funding from the U.S. while delivering little in return.
Last year, Mr. Trump used his speech to criticize other Western nations for allowing unchecked migration and promote his “America First” agenda in place of “destructive globalism.”
Also in 2025, the president’s teleprompter malfunctioned, and the U.N. escalator stopped working just as Mr. Trump and first lady Melania Trump stepped onto it.
Mr. Trump formed a Board of Peace to resolve global conflicts and serve as an alternative to the United Nations. More than two dozen countries agreed to join, according to White House diplomatic logs.
Despite his recurring criticism, Mr. Trump thanked the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday for voting overwhelmingly to pass a resolution condemning Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
He also thanked the United Nations for supporting his plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip after Israeli strikes on Hamas terrorist leaders.
Mr. Trump told gathered leaders that his aggressive approach to leadership includes America’s backyard, pointing to his January raid to capture Venezuelan “outlaw dictator” Nicolas Maduro and extradite him to the U.S. on drug charges.
“The United States will no longer permit threats to America to gain a foothold anywhere in the Western Hemisphere,” he said. “And if necessary, we will use our unmatched military might to secure the vital national interests of the United States.”
He defended his lethal strikes on cartel drug boats in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, dubbing traffickers the “ISIS of the Western Hemisphere.”
Mr. Trump said Cuba is a “failed state” that will fall — which prompted Cuba’s delegation to walk out — though he promised to allow space for negotiations with the communist regime. He hailed an agreement with Denmark to allow the U.S. to control security in Greenland, a pivotal Arctic region coveted by the U.S., China and Russia.
He said the U.S. plans to build two major military bases on the massive island, in addition to the one already there.
More generally, Mr. Trump defended U.S. sovereignty by saying his administration would not accept “global taxes,” including a levy on carbon emissions.
Mr. Trump’s speech was the marquee event in a busy day at the U.N. headquarters in Manhattan.
The president praised British Prime Minister Andy Burnham as a “natural business person” who “gets it” during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the assembly.
“He’s going to be, I think, a great prime minister,” Mr. Trump said. “I think he’s got a lot of assets on his side. We talked about everything from the Rolls-Royce to energy to immigration. We’ve covered a lot and we’re with him.”
Mr. Trump told Mr. Burnham and gathered reporters that he remains optimistic about striking a deal with Iran.
“They want to talk to us. They have been talking to us even today,” Mr. Trump said. “They’ve been talking to us, and the relationship is developing.”
Mr. Trump also praised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, saying her country’s industries are “doing very well.”
“She’s going to go down as one of the great prime ministers,” Mr. Trump said in their meeting. “It’s an honor to be with you.”
The president put his stamp on the U.N. gathering while his Republican Party, which controls the House and Senate, tries to stave off a Democratic wave in the November midterm elections.
Mr. Trump’s address resembled a campaign speech at times. He boasted about Republican tax cuts, a string of foreign investments in American factories and his efforts to seal the southern border.
Voters, however, remain worried about the cost of living and high energy prices from the Iran war.
The average U.S. price of gas is nearly $4.50 per gallon, up from $3.18 at this time last year, according to AAA.
Mr. Trump says costs will nosedive once the Iran war ends, possibly after the midterms, but it is unclear how the conflict will wind down.
The president is also pressing to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries, combined with the conflict in Iran, are driving diesel prices to record highs above $6.50 per gallon.
Mr. Trump, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said he is considering a ban on diesel exports while he works with Kyiv and Moscow to settle the war.
“We will get that one done,” Mr. Trump said of the war in Ukraine. “It’s going to happen more quickly than people understand. They’ve had it.”
Mr. Trump visited the United Nations ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day state visit to Washington.
The U.S. and China are the world’s foremost economic superpowers, and Mr. Trump is looking to defeat Beijing in the race to develop artificial intelligence.
At the same time, U.S. voters are leery of AI’s potential impact on jobs and society, as well as the massive data centers needed to power the industry.
Mr. Trump said the U.S. has to “be careful” and use the Justice Department to monitor the technology, but he would not “stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution.”
“We will only encourage ’super intelligence,’” Mr. Trump said. “We’re going to encourage it, not rein it in.”

OPINION:
Each year at the gathering of world leaders known at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the president of the United States has the opportunity, as the U.N. host country, to speak to the world before almost everyone else. It is an opportunity to address world affairs, mark out American positions and exercise diplomacy on steroids.
President Trump took to the podium Tuesday morning. The two parts of the speech highlighted by nearly every news outlet will be when he mused about the option to annihilate Iran and when he spoke of the Venezuelan oil deal and then offhandedly muttered, “to the victor belong the spoils.”
While those two comments will certainly provide ample fodder for network talking heads to stir the international political pot, Mr. Trump’s speech was actually well-crafted, calmly delivered and, in total, on target. It even managed to draw some applause from the normally stoic U.N. audience a couple of times.
In remarks intended as much for his domestic audience as the international one, Mr. Trump set the table with a victory lap on his administration’s achievements this term, including immigration enforcement gains, military strength and dramatic crime drops in American cities. As elections draw near, Mr. Trump and his political party have been subject to intense criticism and this offered an opportunity for him to remind people of accomplishments as well.
He then pivoted to achievements on the international stage, specifically in Gaza. He noted where things stood when he came back into office in January 2025, paying close attention to the plight of Hamas hostages and how his team was able to negotiate the return of all hostages, living and deceased.
Mr. Trump then tackled the thorny and unpopular issue of the U.S. conflict with Iran. He laid out Iran’s track record of chaos throughout the region and used it to explain why they should never have access to a nuclear weapon. He talked about them being the bully of the Middle East.
On substance, it was an effective argument. He courted controversy, however, when he mused aloud about having a decision to make on whether to annihilate the Islamic Republic or to come to a deal. He followed it up by clearly stating he preferred a deal, but that part will surely be lost on most news outlets. The clicks and views will come from the annihilation option. Largely ignored will be his comments on Iran’s great potential if it chooses a wise path.
He then completed the positive sandwich around Iran by talking about his administration’s role in settling eight wars and conflicts, quoting from letters and conversations with affected world leaders. Again, on the actual content of the speech, it was quite effective.
He dove into Venezuela and how, together with the South American country’s reserves, the U.S. controls more than 60% of the world’s oil market. Make a note of that because if Mr. Trump is eventually successful in Iran, you can expect agreements that drive the U.S. controlling interest number even higher. If the goal is long-term stability, America controlling upwards of 2/3 of the world’s oil could go a long way towards achieving it.
Moving on, Mr. Trump pointed out there is no global government and there must never be a global tax. He also criticized the International Criminal Court and was clear about why the U.S. has not and will not sign on.
He hit one more hot spot before winding up. He is a cheerleader of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a world that is growing fearful of it. Realizing the term AI may be compromised, Trump offered up a rebrand, terming it Super Intelligence (SI) rather than AI. He joked at his own expense about whether or not others will follow his new suggested name of SI.
He concluded with comments about unity, about hope and about a bright future.
There is no shortage of media pundits and world leaders who dislike Mr. Trump and vilify his every word. There are certainly times when he says things that shock even the most seasoned anchors.
This Trump speech, however, taken as a whole, addressed all the topics one would hope for and explained the American position with clarity. Agree or disagree with him, Mr. Trump left no ambiguity. The scorecard? A solid A.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Iran’s president said Wednesday that his people have been “victims of terrorism” by the United States, delivering a rare wartime speech at the U.N. General Assembly a day after President Donald Trump said he may “annihilate” the Islamic Republic if a deal isn’t reached soon to end the nearly seven-month war.
The defiant speech by President Masoud Pezeshkian marked a striking instance of a foreign leader addressing the world body while their country is at war with the host nation. While defending his country, Pezeshkian held up large photos of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the more than 150 Iranian schoolchildren killed on the first days of the war.
“We have only defended ourselves. We are not terrorists,” Pezeshkian said at the General Assembly. “Our innocent people have been the targets of cowardly attacks and aggressions imposed upon our country. And we defended ourselves with utmost strength. America and Israel attacked us.”
He added of the United States: “Yes they did hit us, but we did not bend the knee.” Toward the end of his speech, Pezeshkian called out Trump by name.
“It must be understood by Mr. Trump and those who seek to bully us that we are ready for dialogue and diplomacy and negotiations without accepting the language of force,” he said.

Shortly after, both U.S. and Israeli officials blasted the speech, saying that it was hypocritical for the Islamic Republic to present itself as the victims of the world.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters: “I don’t know what standing Iran has to lecture anyone on human rights or the international system when they habitually violate it.”
A busy 24 hours for US-Iran relations
Arriving in New York under heavy security and scrutiny, Pezeshkian — who, within Iran’s political landscape, is considered a moderate politician — addressed world leaders a day after Trump used the same stage to mull whether to massively escalate a war that has already spiraled out of control.
“I have a big decision to make,” Trump said in his wide-ranging address Tuesday. “Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world. Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?”
Hours after those stunning threats, Trump told reporters that his chief envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, met for about three hours with the Iranian officials on the sidelines of the annual gathering. But he offered few details about how the discussions transpired or the substance of the exchange.
“It was a very good meeting,” Trump said. The president later added that the Iranian officials were “not the highest level, but it’s something.” Also on Tuesday, Rubio said Trump is open to meeting with Pezeshkian while he’s in New York.
But Tehran downplayed Tuesday’s unscheduled exchange, which were the first indirect talks between U.S. and Iranian officials since a June ceasefire unraveled. Esmail Baghaei, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, maintained the country’s negotiating position in talks with U.S. officials, demanding that Washington end its blockade of Iranian ports and release frozen Iranian assets,
Baghaei said the talks — conducted indirectly through Qatari mediators — were “not anything new.”
Rubio echoed that sentiment Wednesday, saying that “it was a continuation of conversations that have occurred in the past.”
“If there’s an opportunity to exchange ideas and messages, we will. And that’s what largely yesterday was — it was positive in that regard,” he said. “But ultimately, I don’t want to mischaracterize this as a major breakthrough.”
More than a year of negotiations have taken place
Pezeshkian’s address elaborated on where Tehran stands as more than a year of start-stop negotiations between the two longtime adversaries have failed to produce a sustainable solution. His speech came as intermittent attacks continued in the Strait of Hormuz off Iran’s coast, where commercial shipping remained below prewar levels.
His address last year came months after the 12-day Israel-Iran war that saw the assassination of many of the Islamic Republic’s highest military and political leaders and once again broke down weeks of negotiations with the United States.
“Ladies and gentlemen, you all bore witness that this past June, my country was subjected to a savage aggression and flagrant contravention of the most elementary principles of international law,” Pezeshkian said at the time.

The Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was to speak at the United Nations on Wednesday.
Things did not go well for him.
As the emcee announced Pezeshkian's impending speech, that's when the boos from the "Free Iran" protester crowd could be heard in the room.
But that wasn't all.
He began speaking and attacking the United States with a complete lack of self-awareness: "We have only defended ourselves; we are not terrorists!"

Could there be a bigger lie? They've been behind and/or funded terrorism for 47 years, all over the region, with a lot of the terrorism directed against the United States. They've propped up a boatload of proxies for terrorist attacks. Their chants of "Death to America" are not the chants of the innocent victim. They have absolutely no credibility at all to try to criticize us for finally standing up to all that and finally stopping them from developing a nuclear weapon that could harm even more people.
The U.S. delegation had the perfect response — they walked out of the room when Pezeshkian dared to try that spin, telling him and the rest of the world exactly what they thought of that lie.
The U.S. wasn't done with their response quite yet.
Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio was asked about Iran. He said he didn't think they understood our system very well.

Rubio said he thought the Iranians were "under this illusion that Democrats were going to win in November and the president will no longer be able to do things against them."
He explained that when it came to the imposition of sanctions and the use of military force, the president has "extraordinary powers...he's the Commander in Chief...So I think the Iranians are fundamentally misreading the issue." He said that for almost 50 years, people, including prior U.S. presidents, have said Iran should not get a nuclear weapon, but only President Donald Trump was making sure that wouldn't happen.
The Iranian president tried to argue in his speech that they only wanted to develop peaceful nuclear power. But that doesn't align with the facts.
“Typically, civilian nuclear power plants require uranium enriched to only about 3% to 5%.
However, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reports that Iran has accumulated a massive stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% purity. This 60% threshold has no credible civilian justification and is widely considered to be a short, technical step away from the 90% enrichment level required to create weapons-grade nuclear material.
Currently, Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state in the world that is producing and stockpiling uranium enriched to this 60% level.”
As we noted, Pezeshkian may have a little trouble getting home to Iran since this is the day on which the sanctions kick in regarding providing fuel and services to Iranian airlines.
