It turns out cleaning up crime wasn’t the only thing President Donald Trump wanted to take care of in our nation’s capital.

Last August, Trump declared “Liberation Day” in the capital, promising that “we’re going to take our capital back” from criminal activity. Over the subsequent months, his approach has worked so well that crime in Washington, DC, is down — even from the phony numbers that led to the firing of several members of the police department.

The cleanup hasn’t stopped there, though. We all know that Trump demanded a fix to the Reflecting Pool in front of the Washington Monument. Now, instead of algae-crusted gunk thanks to an ill-advised “fix” back in the Barack Obama days, the pool’s “American blue” lining provides the perfect backdrop for photogenic views as it has been refilled in recent days — just in time for the semiquincentennial celebration.

“I can’t remember the last time I looked into the water of that thing and didn’t see something resembling the creature of the black lagoon looking back at me,” quipped Jarrett Stepman at The Daily Signal. “I may not have Hollywood looks, but I don’t look that bad.”

And that’s not all for the waterworks. “We had 22 fountains that didn’t work,” Trump marveled. In an email to reporters, White House spokesperson Katie Martin added, “Obama and Biden neglected this upkeep for decades. D.C. residents and visitors are experiencing working fountains across the district, safe streets, and clean park land for the first time in decades, all thanks to President Donald J. Trump.”

These fixes, though, come with a cost. Republicans worry that Trump’s fixation on the nation’s capital doesn’t address pocketbook issues for regular Americans, while Democrats continue to thwart repairs to the East Wing of the White House and try to stop the planned UFC Freedom 250 fights slated for the White House’s South Lawn next week. (As PJ Media’s David Manney explained, “Trump’s critics have now reached the point where a prizefight needs courtroom rescue.”) In addition, the planned Great American State Fair, which was supposed to feature a series of concerts, has instead become something of a laughingstock as several of those musical acts have pulled out.

But even leftist Bill Maher believes it makes Democrats appear unpatriotic. “Now it’s just a big MAGA rally, this whole thing,” noted Maher. “Wouldn’t it have been better just to play this gig? Can’t we all celebrate America itself and leave Trump out of it?” We all know the answer to that rhetorical question.

That’s especially true when you compare events Democrats seemed to have no problem with, such as bathing the White House in rainbow-colored lights and flags for Pride Month or hosting a pride celebration in which one “transgender” guest bared his artificial breasts to celebrate. The Biden administration simply dismissed his action as “not reflective of the event,” but as our Nate Jackson said at the time, “It was exactly reflective of the prideful and hyper-sexualized movement Biden and crew were ostentatiously celebrating.”

Whether or not you agree with the idea of a UFC fight or a massive fair on the hallowed grounds of Washington, DC, at least these are events most Americans would be interested in or take part in, not just a chosen few. It’s not like certain politicians who clean out the homeless only to impress a foreign leader.

Overall, though, the words of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum ring true: “All D.C. needed was President Trump.” It’s a happy circumstance of history that Trump is our nation’s leader as we celebrate 250 years of independence, as he is doing his level best to make our nation’s capital worthy of the celebration we’re about to have. It may not feature events that are everyone’s cup of tea, but the legacy he’s trying to establish can well serve our nation’s capital for many more Independence Day commemorations.

As Stepman explained, “The projects around D.C. demonstrate a return to the ‘can do’ ethos that built this country,” and its resurgence is appropriate to celebrate 250 years of a great nation that does good.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, one of the more unusual events on the celebration calendar has become the subject of a legal fight. President Donald Trump’s planned UFC event on White House grounds is drawing criticism from a pair of plaintiffs who have gone to court in an effort to stop it, arguing that the spectacle is inappropriate for such a historic setting.

The lawsuit, filed just days before the June 14 event, targets a celebration being organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Preparations for the event have already transformed portions of the White House grounds, with a massive steel structure erected on the South Lawn as part of the venue setup. The event is also expected to include ceremonial fighter weigh-ins at the Lincoln Memorial.

According to the lawsuit, the White House and other federal spaces are being used in a way that was never specifically authorized by Congress. The filing also argues that UFC President Dana White and his company stand to benefit from the exposure and branding opportunities that come with staging a major sporting event at some of the country’s most recognizable landmarks. The complaint further points to Trump’s investment interest in UFC’s parent company as a potential concern.

The New York Times framed the dispute largely around questions of government property, private profit, and executive authority. But the lawsuit itself also contains another element that is difficult to ignore.

The plaintiffs, Susan Douglas, a retired political organizer, and Paul Romano, a Vietnam veteran, state that they frequently visit the area and object to the appearance and atmosphere created by the event. They argue that the transformation of spaces surrounding national monuments is offensive and inconsistent with the character of those locations.

That aspect of the case has drawn just as much attention as the legal arguments. Critics of the lawsuit see it as an attempt to block an event simply because they dislike its aesthetics or its association with Trump. To them, the complaint reads less like a pressing constitutional dispute and more like a protest dressed up as litigation.

The timing has also fueled that perception. With the anniversary celebrations approaching and construction already underway, opponents of the lawsuit question why a pair of individuals who merely claim to visit the area should have the power to derail a nationally publicized event.

Whether the court agrees with the plaintiffs remains to be seen. What is clear is that a UFC fight card on White House grounds was always going to attract attention. Now, thanks to a lawsuit from two individuals who say they are offended by the spectacle, the legal battle surrounding the event is becoming almost as prominent as the event itself

This Sunday, 14 June, is both Flag Day and Army Day.

The 250th anniversaries of the founding of our historic Armed Service branches was in 2025: U.S. Army (14 June), U.S. Navy (13 October), and U.S. Marine Corps (10 November), all of them born in 1775.

But pause with me for a moment to contemplate the history of our flag.

Though earlier Patriot flags had been pieced together, it was on 14 June 1777 — more than two years after the first shots of the American Revolution at Lexington and Concord, and almost a year after the signing of our Declaration of Independence — that the Second Continental Congress adopted the familiar Betsy Ross 13-star banner as our American flag.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation, originating with the signing of our Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, our flag has become the beacon of the American Liberty embodied in that Declaration and its irrevocable assertion of the unalienable rights of man, as later enshrined in our Republic’s Constitution.

Our flag is a symbol of hope for all people who embrace these eternal words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed — that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

We, the current generation of American Patriots, honor the history of our national flag and display it with pride. Those who denigrate our flag — and by extension our nation — deeply offend the honorable service of all who have served under its banner, and their families.

More than 1.3 million American Patriots have given their lives under our flag, another 1.4 million have been wounded in combat, and tens of millions more have served honorably, surviving without physical wounds but many with wounds unseen.

Of that service and sacrifice, my friend and Medal of Honor recipient Britt Slabinsky notes: “Comfort did not buy your freedom. Sacrifice did. It was forged in the fires of the crucible, shaped by the hands of those who fought, bled, and died for it. … Too often without recognition. … They were our sons. Our daughters. Our brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, friends, and neighbors. They followed the strength of their convictions and paid for it with every dream they would ever have. … Never let comfort make you forget the cost.”

It is so significant as the symbol of our nation that our national anthem, penned by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812, is all about it. On 14 September 1814, while being detained on a British ship, Key witnessed the 25-hour British Navy bombardment of Fort McHenry above Baltimore harbor. It was “by the dawn’s early light” the next morning that Key could see the Fort’s large garrison flag (30 by 42 feet) flying high. Originally a poem, “Defence of Fort M'Henry” was popularized as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and on 3 March 1931, by joint resolution of Congress, it became our national anthem.

Our flag has flown high above hundreds of battles since the War of 1812, and perhaps the most iconic raising was on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, on 23 February 1945. On the other side of the world, it flew over the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. It was raised over the shores of Inchon and the jungles of Vietnam. It flew on the Moon with Apollo 11 and subsequent missions. It was raised above the Ground Zero rubble in New York City after the 9/11 attack on our nation. It covers the caskets of our war dead.

It is of such importance that for generations, we have pledged our allegiance to it, “and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Shamefully, it has also been used as a political rag to advance political agendas — most recently by the Biden/Harris regime regime, which repeatedly ordered American flags to half-staff to align with their political race-hustling or gun control agendas. Five times in his first six months in office, Biden ordered flags to half-staff after firearm deaths and continued to do so over the next three and a half years.

Of course, such proclamations are for federal installations only — though, unfortunately, states, local governments, and many private organizations reflexively follow those orders.

In 2023, Biden even had DoD restrict patriotic flag displays.

President Donald Trump has consistently advocated respect for our national banner: “Imagine what our country could accomplish if we started working together as one people under one God saluting one American flag. … We all salute, with pride, the same American Flag. And we are equal — totally equal — in the eyes of Almighty God. … There is no global anthem, no global currency, no certificate of global citizenship. We pledge allegiance to one flag, and that flag is the American flag.”

That resonates with words from the famous poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., who declared, “One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, One Nation evermore!”

There are annual days when flags should be lowered over federal installations: Peace Officers Memorial Day (15 May, sunrise to sunset); Memorial Day (last Monday in May, sunrise to 1200); Patriot Day (11 September, sunrise to sunset); National Firefighters Memorial Day (first Sunday in October, sunrise to sunset); and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (7 December, sunrise to sunset). It is appropriate and fitting that private organizations also honor these annual days by lowering flags, most notably Memorial Day.

Some other memorable quotes worth repeating:

“We identify the flag with almost everything we hold dear on earth, peace, security, liberty, our family, our friends, our home. … But when we look at our flag and behold it emblazoned with all our rights, we must remember that it is equally a symbol of our duties. Every glory that we associate with it is the result of duty done.” —Calvin Coolidge

“When we honor our flag, we honor what we stand for as a nation — freedom, equality, justice, and hope.” —Ronald Reagan

And there is the poem “Ragged Old Flag” by Johnny Cash, which you can listen to here.

Of our flag, the 19th-century clergyman and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher wrote:

If one asks the meaning of our flag, I say it means just what Concord and Lexington meant, what Bunker Hill meant. It means the whole glorious Revolutionary War. It means all that the Declaration of Independence meant. It means all that the Constitution of our people, organizing for justice, for liberty, and for happiness, meant.

Under this banner rode Washington and his armies. … It waved on the highlands at West Point. … This banner streamed in light over the soldiers’ heads at Valley Forge. … It crossed the waters rolling with ice at Trenton.

Our flag carries American ideas, American history, and American feelings. Beginning with the colonies, and coming down to our time, in its sacred heraldry, in its glorious insignia, it has gathered and stored chiefly this supreme idea: Divine right of liberty in man. Every color means liberty. Every thread means liberty. Every form of star and beam or stripe of light means liberty. Not lawlessness, not license, but organized, institutional liberty — liberty through law, and laws for liberty.

This American flag was the safeguard of liberty. Not an atom of crown was allowed to go into its insignia. Not a symbol of authority in the ruler was permitted to go into it. It was an ordinance of liberty by the people, for the people. That it meant, that it means, and, by the blessing of God, that it shall mean to the end of time.

While the first verse of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is familiar to most Americans, it is the fourth and final verse that speaks most directly to the humbling legacy of American Patriots, who have stood in harm’s way since the earliest skirmishes of the American Revolution:

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

“In God is our trust” was shortened to “In God We Trust” and first appeared on U.S. coins in 1864. In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law as our national motto.

Notably however, the first stanza of our national anthem concludes: “Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

The answer to that question rests with you and me.

A poll shows many Democrats would rather live in a different country and wave goodbye to the United States of America, the news coming as more in the party view socialism favorably.

The Elon University/YouGov America 250 National Survey that was performed between April 30 and May 4th asked respondents “Is there any other country on Earth you would rather live in than the United States today?” to which 55 percent of Democrats said yes.

Thirty-eight percent of Independents said yes while only 10 percent of Republicans gave the same answer:

The survey targeted U.S. adults with a sample size of 1,000 and a +/-3.95 % margin of error via an online, web-based survey.

A poll in 2025 found a majority of Democrat voters aligned with socialism over capitalism and supported far-left candidates, Breitbart News reported in September.

“Unsurprisingly, the survey found that socialism is largely toxic to Republicans and many independents, explaining why far-left Democrats have had more success in places like New York City but have struggled in red and battleground areas. The poll also found that a plurality of independent voters and Republicans prefer capitalism,” the outlet said.

A few months later, another poll showed a majority of Democrats had a favorable view of socialism. The Breitbart News article highlighted the fact that New York City voted in Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who is Muslim and openly socialist.

President Donald Trump responded by stating “After last night’s results, the decision facing all Americans could not be more clear. We have a choice between communism and common sense.”

In 2013, former Marxist-turned-conservative icon David Horowitz gave a speech at the Heritage Foundation in which he said his communist parents had described themselves as progressives.

“The agenda was a Soviet America…the slogan of the communist party in those days was peace, jobs, democracy. Sound familiar?” he said.

Per the Breitbart News article:

That was the theme of Horowitz’s speech as he continued: how the communists had taken over the Democratic Party. “The communist party is the Democratic Party,” Horowitz stated. “In The Great Gatsby, [F. Scott] Fitzgerald describes the rich as people who break things and leave them for others to clean up. That is a wonderful description of the left.” Horowitz, who began as a radical Marxist, said that the modern left had learned stealth from their failures in the 1960s: “The left have learned from the 1960s…we in the 1960s didn’t want to pretend to be Jeffersonian democrats…That’s why we failed in the 1960s. That’s why they’ve succeeded now.”

American voters currently appear to be leaning away from Democrats as the critical midterms approach, with a recent CNN poll showing Democrats sliding, according to Breitbart News.

In April, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) simplified the battle for the midterms by stating the argument in favor of Republicans came down to something quite simple.

Once again, that uber-leftist state of California is fully displaying a new and different definition of “election day.” One would tend to believe that the very words would offer a sense of finality to an election, a campaign for a particular political office. Sadly, we witness, yet again, that it appears to the Marxist leftists as the quote attributed to Josef Stalin says, “Those who cast the vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.”

Imagine being a voter in California, truly any leftist state, and you cast your vote early or on election day, but the results take a week, or longer, well, until those counting decide that they get the outcome they desire. This is why I coined the phrase “the margin of cheating.” One must win beyond the margin of cheating, limits of rigging, to make it far more difficult for the forces of leftism to succeed. We first saw this in the Minnesota Senate election between Republican Norm Coleman and challenger Al Franken, a pathetic comedian. Things kept going past election day as more and more ballots for Franken kept appearing in the strangest of places.

I have my very own experience with said voter fraud issues during my reelection race in 2012 against Patrick Murphy. Somehow, in St. Lucie County, there were polling locations reporting a greater than 100% turnout. As well, somehow, after midnight, a switch was flipped, and I went from being up by a certain number of votes to being down by almost the same number of votes. Not to mention, St. Lucie County Election Supervisor Gertrude Walker was seen after hours at the ballot location.

Federal law establishes a uniform Election Day for federal offices in order to promote finality, public confidence, and administrable election rules. See 2 U.S.C. §§1, 7; 3 U.S.C. §1. That uniformity is undermined when states extend ballot receipt beyond Election Day, effectively prolonging federal elections after voting has concluded. Of course, there will be those who say, well, Colonel, the recent elections in California were not federal, pardon, yes, you had congressional races in that primary, along with state and local, mayoral. When the left goes down this path, there is no greater evidence of voter disenfranchisement than this.

And this is why the American Constitutional Rights Union has joined the Public Interest Legal Foundation in filing an amicus brief in support of a case before the U.S. Supreme Court concerning the definition of election day. This is a critical issue, especially in a time when leftists are always crowing about “threats to democracy.” Here are some examples of Marxist leftists’ threats to our representative democracy:

• Counting illegal immigrants in our census.
• Advocating for illegal immigrants to vote in our elections.
• Unsolicited mail-in ballots, the process of mailing out ballots to addresses where there has not been voter roll auditing. Absentee ballots require a request and signature verification.
• No support for the SAVE America Act, which requires a picture ID for voter registration and voting.

If I had a say, we would have only two ways of voting in America: absentee and in person. And with in-person voting, the early voting period would be limited to just ten days before the election, not the absurdity of a month or two before. We should end these insidious leftist practices of ballot drop boxes and ballot harvesting, unless you see votes as a crop.

As well, we must follow the law when it comes to mailing our absentee ballots for our military. Too often these ballots are not mailed on time, and there should be harsh criminal penalties to those who do not. One of the arguments about “extending” election day is to ensure military ballots are returned and counted. Back in my day in the military, one of the additional duties you could have as a young Second Lieutenant, Ensign in the Naval forces, is Voting Officer. It was your duty to track those members in your unit who would need to submit a request for a ballot. As well, you had to brief the entire unit, company/battery level, 100-200 troops, about upcoming election cycles and timelines. When I was in Congress, I served on the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Military Personnel. Rep. Joe Wilson was the Chairman. We heavily focused on the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), which requires a ballot to be issued 45 days before the election. This must be enforced, and no, the SAVE America Act does not jeopardize UOCAVA. What jeopardizes UOCAVA is the willful and intentional nefarious actions of election supervisors who wish to disenfranchise our uniformed service men and women, yet they would allow illegal immigrants to vote.

This recent election in California should be an embarrassment. It is not, because it is about controlling the results. Florida was once embarrassed by the whole “hanging chad” episode. Now the Sunshine State is a model for election integrity and efficiency. If there are no consequences and ramifications for the behavior we just witnessed in California, our electoral processes will be degraded. Marxists believe in the ideal that “the ends justify the means” and their insatiable hunger for power and control leads them to the other ideal, “by any means necessary.”

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California on Tuesday raised the stakes of the midterm elections and the landscape for 2028 by issuing an implied threat of incarceration to President Donald Trump.

“Trump says voter fraud should land people in prison,” Newsom wrote on the social media platform X.

“Agreed,” the governor added. “And let’s start with the politicians spreading election lies with the goal of illegally interfering with counting ballots.”

Last week, California held open primaries, most notably for governor and Los Angeles mayor.

In the seven days since, mail-in ballots have slowly altered projected results.

For instance, in the Los Angeles mayoral race, election-night projections showed former reality TV star Spencer Pratt advancing to a November runoff against incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass. Now, however, progressive City Councilwoman Nithya Raman looks poised to advance.

Meanwhile, the largest U.S. state continues counting ballots at a snail’s pace that even prominent liberals have criticized.

This banana republic-like method of conducting an election has raised suspicions, notably from Trump. The president, of course, has always maintained that Democrats used mail-in ballots to cheat him out of the 2020 election.

Newsom, however, was not finished making threats.

“In California, I just signed a law making that punishable with up to 3 years behind bars. More to come. FAFO, Donald,” the governor concluded.

In a May 27 news release, Newsom’s office announced that the governor had signed Senate Bill 73.

As the release makes clear, the bill is aimed at “growing threats of election interference and intimidation, including efforts by allies of President Donald Trump to undermine confidence in elections and disrupt lawful election administration.”

The text of the bill contains nothing about “politicians spreading election lies with the goal of illegally interfering with counting ballots,” as Newsom put it, but the wording of Newsom’s post implies he has creative ideas on how it could be enforced.

The implicit message is that questioning the clearly questionable election process in California constitutes “election interference and intimidation” by undermining “confidence in elections.”

Newsom writes, the punishment for that is “up to 3 years behind bars.”

Newsom, meanwhile, has tried to position himself as Trump’s chief antagonist, most likely in anticipation of a 2028 presidential run.

And that was the real message of Tuesday’s post from the governor. The anti-Trump lawfare of the Biden years is on the agenda if he gets into the White House.

And he wants the whole country — but especially Democratic primary voters — to know it.
