Days after President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth argued that the April ceasefire with Iran reset the 60-day War Powers clock, the U.S. and Iran are exchanging fire once again.
On Sunday, President Trump announced Project Freedom, in which U.S. Navy ships and aircraft would guide commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz after having swept for mines in recent weeks. Obviously, it’s an effort to break Iran’s blockade of the Strait and restore commerce, particularly oil (which would reduce gas prices here in the States). Within 24 hours, U.S. Central Command declared “an enhanced security area” on the Oman side of the Strait, but Iran responded by firing on multiple ships.
The U.S. quickly sank seven Iranian boats, and Trump warned that Iran would be “blown off the face of the Earth” if it fights back against efforts to open the Strait. Hegseth asserted that the Iranians “don’t control the Strait.”
The United Arab Emirates announced that Iran had fired upon one of its tankers, as well as launching a drone attack on its Fujairah Oil Industry Zone. In response, the UAE will coordinate with the U.S. and Israel, which could be a major new development in the war effort.
As for the U.S., the president wants to maintain a posture of strength. “We have more weapons and ammunition at a much higher grade than we had before,” Trump said. “We have the best equipment. We have stuff all over the world. We have these bases all over the world. They’re all stocked up with equipment. We can use all of that stuff, and we will, if we need it.”
Trump’s clear hope is that he can economically strangle Iran, but the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which maintains real power in the nation, is not exactly in tune with the economic struggles of the Iranian people. That doesn’t mean the IRGC won’t resist efforts to reopen the Strait, the blockade of which is its only real remaining leverage against the U.S. and Israel. As one IRGC commander put it, “We warn foreign armed forces, particularly the US aggressor army, that if they attempt to approach or enter the Strait of Hormuz, they will be attacked.”
So far, Trump seems up to the challenge. He doesn’t hold all the cards yet, but he’s awfully close. And though Iran’s current regime won’t concede much of anything at the negotiating table, Trump has avoided accepting concessions the way Barack Obama and Joe Biden so readily did. Unlike his predecessors, he knows the mullahs are not to be trusted.
Americans are losing patience with our own economy and with Trump personally, but despite the Leftmedia’s best efforts to misinform, 74% of Americans — including 60% of Democrats — believe we’re winning the war with Iran.
