Hormuz traffic nears prewar levels as Iran war simmers!-Posted on The Washington Times-By Vaughn Cockayne, The Washington Times-On September 29, 2026:

Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz increased dramatically in September, according to maritime tracking firms on Tuesday, inching closer to prewar levels as some speculate that Iran is losing leverage against the U.S. in the seven-month-long war.

An average of 10 million barrels of oil have passed through the strait daily, according to data from maritime tracking agency Kpler.

Approximately 17 million to 20 million barrels traveled through the strait daily before the war began in February and Iran closed the waterway.

It’s a marked improvement in traffic levels during the height of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Commercial traffic in the strait hit record lows in August, with only a single vessel making it through safely on certain days.

Since vessels traveling through the waterway still run the risk of being attacked by Iranian drones or missiles, most reportedly travel under cover of darkness through Omani waters and often turn their transponders off before entering the strait.

That makes it difficult to get an accurate number from maritime tracking firms, which have all presented diverging figures this week on September daily averages. Still, most point to a noticeable uptick in traffic.

The increase could be attributed to the efforts of U.S. Central Command to protect commercial ships as they move through the strait. CENTCOM has also maintained a blockade of Iran’s ports since July in an attempt to cut off Tehran’s oil exports.

President Trump and other administration officials have for months asserted that the U.S. controls Hormuz and that ships should feel safe to move through the waterway. But as traffic levels remain well below prewar levels, it’s clear his rhetoric has not totally convinced insurance and shipping companies.

Additionally, the increase in traffic has not translated to lower gas prices for Americans or lower international oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark for crude oil, stood at $102 a barrel on Tuesday, down from this week’s high of $108 but far above the $89 price from the same time last month.

The U.S. national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.46, according to AAA data.

Iran has also indicated that it’s prepared to increase its attacks on energy infrastructure and U.S. military assets in the Middle East, which could throw oil prices into further disarray and tighten traffic in Hormuz.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s Parliament speaker, said Tuesday that regional oil infrastructure would not be spared if the U.S. fails to agree to Iranian demands to end its blockade and remove military assets from the region.

“If we do not sell oil in a region, no one will sell oil there, and if our security is not guaranteed, no infrastructure will be safe,” Mr. Ghalibaf said.

Iran has shown a capacity to target oil infrastructure, including plants in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Tehran’s allies in eastern Iraq and Yemen have also dealt significant damage to Saudi oil facilities in recent weeks, with the country’s major East-West pipeline having to pause operations after a drone attack from an Iran-aligned Shiite militia.

Mr. Ghalibaf’s comments come as Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, held talks with Qatari mediators in New York City this week in hopes of brokering a ceasefire agreement and reopening Hormuz.

Mr. Trump, however, has been insistent that any deal with Iran that does not include a full elimination of Tehran’s nuclear ambitions is a nonstarter.

On Tuesday, the president implied that he was in no rush to see a diplomatic end to the conflict, adding that America’s economic pressure campaign targeting Iran’s exports and banking sector will facilitate Tehran’s collapse.

“That’ll be over with very soon,” Mr. Trump said. “They will not have a nuclear weapon, and oil prices are going to be tumbling down just like they were before I had to make that little excursion to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Pakistan vows to defend Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed Houthis by ‘whatever means!’-Posted on The Washington Times-By Trisha Thomas, Associated Press-On September 29, 2026:

ROME — Pakistan will use “whatever means are available” to defend Saudi Arabia against Iran-backed Houthi rebels, the country’s defense minister said Tuesday, offering one of Islamabad’s clearest indications yet that it could become directly involved in the widening regional conflict.

Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif declined to say whether Pakistani forces had already participated in airstrikes. He said, however, that Pakistan’s military capabilities would be available to Saudi Arabia under a new mutual defense pact with Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

“I’m not going into detail, but obviously when I say that we are bound by this arrangement to defend Saudi Arabia, that means whatever means are available at our disposal, they’ll be available to Saudi Arabia also. I think that’s a categoric statement,” Asif told reporters during a visit to Rome when asked whether Pakistan had been involved in airstrikes against Iranian operators in Yemen.

His response did not explicitly confirm Pakistani participation in any strikes. He also did not say whether Saudi Arabia, which has been repeatedly attacked by the Houthis in recent weeks, had asked for assistance.

Military commanders recently met

His comments came days after the army chiefs of Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia met in Riyadh to discuss responses to Houthi attacks.

Asif said the Houthis had intensified missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia and expanded their control along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

The Houthis recently captured the strategic port city of Mokha and several Red Sea islands, extending their reach toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a maritime route through which about 12% of global trade passes. They, along with allied militias in Iraq, also have attacked Saudi oil facilities and sought to prevent Saudi tankers from using the strait.

New alliance is still taking shape

Asif described the Houthis as aggressors and said Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia was unambiguous.

“Any enemy of Saudi Arabia is enemy of Pakistan. That should be very clear,” he said.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement on Aug. 7, declaring that an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all three. The countries have described the pact as defensive and said it is not directed against any particular state.

The agreement brings together oil-rich Saudi Arabia, NATO member Turkey and nuclear-armed Pakistan. Asif did not mention nuclear weapons or suggest they were part of Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia.

The fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has created an early test for the alliance. The pact’s full text has not been released, and its command and operational structures are still being developed. Asif said the three countries were establishing a secretariat and putting the alliance’s framework in place.

Other countries have expressed interest in joining, he said, but there were no immediate plans to expand the alliance.

Asif said the alliance reflected a belief among its members that existing security arrangements had failed to protect Gulf countries as the conflict involving Iran spread across the region.

“Once you start a conflict, you cannot control the outcome of that conflict. You cannot control the trajectory of that conflict,” he said.

Pakistan retains ties with Iran

Iran has long supplied the Houthis with weapons and other assistance, though Tehran denies directing their military operations. Asif suggested the Houthis and some Iraqi militias might now act with substantial independence from Iran.

“Some of these proxies, they become rogue,” he said.

Despite Pakistan’s willingness to support Saudi Arabia militarily, Asif said Islamabad also was pressing for negotiations to end the broader conflict involving Iran and supported reviving a negotiated agreement over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Pakistan sought to establish itself as a mediator earlier this year, working with other countries in the region to end the conflict. While indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran have resumed through mediators, Asif provided no details on Pakistan’s involvement in the latest efforts.

In April, Pakistan hosted rare direct talks between Iran and the United States in Islamabad. The two sides reached an interim agreement in June and committed to trying to reach a final deal within 60 days, but the deadline passed after hostilities resumed.

Top diplomats from Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia also met recently on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to discuss implementing the new defense pact and coordinating a response to attacks targeting Mecca and other sites in Saudi Arabia.

BAGHDAD — The U.S. military announced on Wednesday that it has completed the withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq, ending a 12-year mission to fight the Islamic State group. The last U.S. troops left an air base in northern Iraq under a deal between Baghdad and Washington.

The withdrawal, agreed on two years ago, comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war between the United States and Iran that has also sometimes spilled over into Iraq, with Iran-backed militias firing on U.S. troops and the U.S. striking the groups’ strongholds.

In recent years, Washington has appeared to seek to shift its focus from the Middle East toward Asia, but that shift has been inconsistent, with the Pentagon alternating between reducing its Middle East presence and then finding itself engaging in new conflicts — including the ongoing war in Iran.

Baghdad touted the end of the U.S. mission as a sign of the country’s increasing strength and sovereignty.

The withdrawal was also celebrated by Iran-backed groups but raised concerns among some other Iraqis, particularly in the Kurdish region, where many fear a resurgence of IS as well as more attacks by Iran-linked groups, possibly emboldened by the departure of U.S. forces.

Meanwhile, questions loom around the future of the Iraqi militias, which the Baghdad government has sought to disarm, with little success so far.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement that U.S. troops and equipment had completed an “orderly departure” from the air base in Irbil, in northern Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region.

“This milestone reflects the success of a 12-year campaign that defeated ISIS as an organized military threat in Iraq and across the region,” he said. “It also marks a transition from a wartime coalition mission to an Iraqi-led security effort supported by a more normal bilateral security relationship.”

He added that the U.S. military “will continue to provide targeted training and intelligence support to our Iraqi partners.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi presided over the handover ceremony and described the U.S. withdrawal as the beginning of a “new phase, one defined by Iraq’s sovereignty, the strength of its institutions, the readiness of its forces, the unity of its decision-making, and balanced partnerships with its friends.”

He said Iraqi security forces will continue the fight against IS and the government will ensure that non-state groups no longer hold weapons.

U.S. troops invaded Iraq in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein. They departed in 2011, but three years later, Iraqi authorities invited a smaller U.S.-led mission to fight the Islamic State group, which had rampaged across Iraq, seizing large swaths of territory.

With the extremist group reduced to scattered sleeper cells, Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 to wind the mission down.

U.S. troops pulled out of bases in most areas of Iraq last year but maintained a small presence of hundreds of troops in the semiautonomous northern Kurdish region. Bases there have regularly come under attack since the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran on Feb. 28. Iran-backed Iraqi militias also have coordinated with Yemen’s Houthi rebels to attack Saudi Arabia.

The future of militias remains unclear

The Iraqi government initially linked the Sept. 30 deadline for U.S. withdrawal to the disarmament of non-state armed groups by that date.

While a handful of less-influential militias have agreed to turn over their weapons, powerful groups close to Iran rejected the prospect or set conditions for disarming that the government would be unlikely to meet.

Al-Zaidi has since walked back the deadline. He told The New York Times earlier this month that the deadline for militia disarmament has been pushed to June 2027.

The effects of the U.S. withdrawal may not be immediately visible, particularly since the U.S. military presence had already been scaled down. But officials in Iraq’s Kurdish region have expressed anxiety about the departure and particularly about the removal of U.S. air defense systems.

The Kurdish regional government’s Peshmerga Ministry said the Kurdish region had faced more than 1,000 drone and ballistic-missile attacks during the recent U.S.-Iran conflict.

“The departure of the United States from the Kurdistan Region under these complex regional circumstances, without the provision of a defense system, is a matter of concern,” the statement said.

Iran-allied groups in Iraq, meanwhile, have celebrated the U.S. withdrawal.

“The expulsion of the occupation forces, defeated, from the land of Iraq is the beginning of full sovereignty,” Abu Mujahid al-Assaf, a security official with the powerful Kataib Hezbollah militia, said in a statement.

He added a warning to al-Zaidi and his government not to carry out American plans, threatening that “any government that does not work for the benefit of the people will be overthrown by all means.”
