President Trump railed Monday against the Iranian leadership and promised to respond after Tehran launched attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East overnight, signaling that the regional conflict could start again after a monthlong lull in fighting.
In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump called Iran a “failed nation” and repeated his assertion that the U.S. military had eliminated Tehran’s ability to fight back or pay its soldiers. He added that the country’s leadership is in “total disarray and incapable of properly representing the country.”
Later Monday, Mr. Trump told Fox News’ Trey Yingst that the U.S. would deliver a military response to Iran’s overnight strikes.
“We’re going to hit them hard,” he said. “There will be a response.”
Iran on Monday launched a new wave of retaliatory strikes against targets in the Middle East in response to U.S. attacks on an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes marked the first kinetic exchange since July.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had launched missiles and drones at the King Hussein and Al Azraq air bases in Jordan overnight, causing “heavy damage” to infrastructure, maintenance facilities and enemy fighter jet positions. Al Azraq, known officially as Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, hosts the U.S. Air Force’s 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing. King Hussein focuses on more specialized units.
The Jordanian military contradicted Iran’s claims, asserting that its forces intercepted eight missiles that breached its airspace before they could threaten any infrastructure or troops.
The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense also reported intercepting a drone launched from Iran attempting to enter its airspace. The interception caused no damage or casualties, the ministry said.
Iranian military officials had previously claimed to have launched a series of ballistic missiles at the Al Minhad Air Base, which the UAE denied. The air base also hosts a small U.S. contingent alongside Australian and British forces.
The IRGC also said its forces downed an MQ-9 Reaper drone near the Strait of Hormuz. Some estimates say Iranian air defenses have downed at least 45 MQ-9 drones since the start of the war, or about 25% of the pre-war U.S. inventory.
Both strikes were in apparent retaliation for a U.S. attack on Larak Island, a small Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz, southeast of Qeshm.
U.S. Central Command said it launched the strikes Sunday after determining that Iran was preparing to fire rockets carrying sea mines from the island into the strait.
Iranian officials say at least three people were killed in the strikes on Larak Island.
U.S. Central Command said the attacks Sunday were not a change in U.S. posture and constituted only a “limited, precise action” against an “imminent threat” in the Strait of Hormuz. Mr. Trump and other administration officials asserted at the start of the war on Feb. 28 that the U.S. launched strikes to eliminate the imminent threat posed by Iran’s conventional weapons.
Last week, CENTCOM announced that the U.S. had successfully demined the Strait of Hormuz, paving the way for the safe transit of commercial ships through the waterway. Other reports said the U.S. had also begun ramping up its efforts to guide tankers through the strait via Omani waters, indicating that Iran was losing its leverage over the waterway.
Iran closed the strait in March, and commercial traffic in the waterway has been sharply reduced since. The price of Brent crude oil rose to about $90 per barrel Monday.
Shortly after fighting restarted in July, Mr. Trump publicly called off another round of airstrikes, citing positive steps toward diplomacy. The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding — which called for an immediate halt to military operations and opened the door to further technical negotiations — had been signed by both nations in June, but was effectively set aside when hostilities resumed. Most of August was dominated by U.S. officials insisting that there would be no further kinetic action for the time being as the Trump administration’s economic pressure campaign continued.
The pressure campaign, which includes expanding secondary sanctions on Iran’s trading partners and a comprehensive naval blockade, aims to either collapse the Iranian economy or force Tehran back to the negotiating table.
Tehran, however, has been far from willing to return to the negotiating table and has promised to respond forcefully to the pressure campaign and the U.S. strikes over the weekend.
The Iranian Armed Forces General Staff and the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, the joint operational command center in Tehran, vowed Monday to respond forcefully to further U.S. military action in the region.
“As we have demonstrated in practice so far, while respecting the national sovereignty of our neighbors, we will never tolerate any form of aggression and will deliver a much heavier response,” the agencies wrote in a joint statement. “We warn you: you have repeatedly tested the strong resolve of our armed forces and our courageous and resilient people. Do not test it again.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that the only way to resolve the current situation is for the U.S. to live up to its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which both nations signed in June.
The agreement, which included a regional ceasefire and called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, has effectively been dead since July, when fighting resumed over control of the waterway.

U.S. forces struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sites in Iran on Tuesday after attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the day, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM did not specify which locations were targeted for strikes. Reports from state-affiliated media in Iran indicated that U.S. strikes hit several targets in southern Iran near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, along with sites in Konarak, Chabahar, Qeshm and Sirik.
The attacks were in response to what CENTCOM termed “attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping” and threats against U.S. forces in the region.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre reported Monday evening that a Saudi Arabian tanker and a South Korean tanker were struck by unidentified objects within minutes of each other while traveling in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump confirmed separately that the U.S. strikes were in retaliation for Iran’s attempted mine-laying operations and for recent attacks on a U.S. military base in Jordan.
“If the failed Nation of Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran!” he added.
Mr. Trump warned earlier this week that he would hit back at Iran over its strikes on U.S. military assets and commercial vessels in the strait.
The IRGC, Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff and the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, its top joint operational command, issued statements condemning the attacks on Tuesday and vowed to launch a “crushing” response.
“Armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will deliver crushing and devastating blows to the vile and hostile American enemy,” Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff and the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters wrote in a joint statement. “We have repeatedly declared, and are determined, that under no circumstances will we retreat from the rights of the heroic Iranian nation, and we will impose heavy costs on the American enemy.”
The U.S. strikes on Tuesday come as the Iran war heats up again this week, shattering a month-long pause in fighting and a pivot to economic warfare on the part of the Trump administration.
The Tuesday attacks are likely the most extensive strikes since kinetic action restarted this week. The U.S. on Sunday struck Larak Island, off Iran’s southern coast, asserting that Tehran was prepared to launch rockets with sea mines attached.
CENTCOM categorized the strikes as precise and not a change in overall U.S. strategy, which had been publicly focused for weeks on using the naval blockade and heavy sanctions to pressure Iran into economic collapse or to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran retaliated early Monday with attempted attacks on U.S. military assets in Jordan. The Jordanian defense ministry reported no casualties or damage resulting from the strikes.
The United Arab Emirates also reported an attempted drone strike from Iran on Monday that was intercepted before it could reach its intended target.
Iran is likely to respond militarily to the latest strikes as well.
Iranian parliament speaker and chief negotiator with the U.S., Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Tuesday that if the U.S. expanded its pressure campaign against his country, then Tehran would be forced to respond militarily.
“If they intensify the blockade, we will definitely respond militarily,” Mr. Bagher Ghalibaf said in a video message. “If the enemy is determined to prevent us from exporting oil from the Persian Gulf, no one will be able to export oil.”
The U.S. is also poised to expand its sanctions campaign against Iran this week.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent teased more sanctions Tuesday targeting banks that do business with Iran and indicated that they could be announced as soon as this week.
The Treasury Department last week announced sanctions targeting the UAE branch of Egypt’s state-owned bank Banque Misr but has stopped short of targeting Iran’s largest economic partners, China, Russia and Turkey.
Mr. Bessent said he has had private discussions with Chinese representatives concerning Beijing’s economic relationship with Iran, but did not confirm whether any Chinese banks would be targeted by sanctions this week.
“We are probably going to announce a bank sanction this week, and we will announce one the week after. We are speaking to our allies here, who have all come forward, and we have had a great show of support,” Mr. Bessent told the crowd at the Group of 20 summit in Asheville, North Carolina.
The expansion of the kinetic war and the economic pressure campaign come as Iran continues to push for a return to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, the now-defunct agreement signed between Tehran and Washington in June.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Kyrgyzstan, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said that despite recent flare-ups over control of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran is prepared to enter an era of peace under the terms of the memorandum.
“Unlike the United States, my country has an outstanding record of honoring its international commitments and agreements and has always acted in accordance with the principles of international law,” he said. “Lasting security is achieved not through confrontation but through mutual trust, respect for national sovereignty, noninterference in domestic affairs and cooperation among governments.”
He added that the U.S. adhered to the terms of the agreement only for a few weeks before the pact collapsed in July.
Mr. Pezeshkian stressed that Iran is willing to respond forcefully if the U.S. continues to violate its commitments under the agreement.
The U.S. and Iran signed the Pakistani-mediated memorandum in June after weeks of backchannel diplomacy. The agreement mandated a temporary ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and at least 60 days of direct negotiations between the two countries.
Pakistan has been one of the loudest voices urging a return to the memorandum over the past month, working alongside Qatar to ferry peace proposals between the U.S. and Iran.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told his counterparts at SCO on Tuesday that the memorandum “offers the most viable and enduring pathway to lasting peace.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not mince words at the G20 this week. Iran’s regime, he said, is already finished, it simply has not accepted it yet.
Drawing on an image from his South Carolina childhood, Bessent compared Tehran to a poisonous snake after its head has been cut off, still capable of thrashing and biting for a time, but no longer able to really survive. That, he said, is the purpose of Operation Economic Outcast. Not necessarily to trigger an immediate economic collapse, but to cut off the financial lifelines sustaining the regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps until the remaining danger finally burns out.

"Larry, I was thinking about it over the weekend, and Iran reminds me of, when I was a kid in South Carolina. We lived near a swamp and as a result, we'd end up with a lot of poison snakes in our yard. And you would take either a rake, or a machete, or a paddle from a boat, and you'd cut the head off. But the snake, the tail kept wiggling. And you had to bury the head of the snake, because the head of the snake was still poisonous, and there was venom there," Bessent said. "So we are burying the head of the Iranian snake. The snake doesn't know it's dead yet, but it will stop wiggling when the sun goes down. And so the Iranian regime, they are demised, and they will figure it out."
That message comes as Bessent leads Operation Economic Outcast, a Treasury-led campaign intended to sever the Iranian regime’s remaining economic lifelines through sanctions on its oil trade, banking channels, and foreign partners. The administration has made clear that it is willing to pressure even friendly countries and institutions that keep Tehran’s financial networks alive.
Bessent argued that the military and economic campaigns work in tandem: U.S. strikes have weakened the regime’s ability to threaten the region, while Operation Economic Outcast is meant to deny Tehran the money, trade, and financial access it would need to rebuild. In the secretary’s metaphor, military action cut off the head of the snake and now the sanctions campaign is helping the sun set, ensuring the regime cannot keep moving indefinitely.
This comes as the United States launched a fresh round of strikes against Iran on Tuesday afternoon, after Iranian forces fired on commercial vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night.
