It is hard to see what President Donald Trump could have done differently.
He faced the usual Trump Derangement Syndrome from his political opponents. He faced resistance from those who oppose almost any military action abroad. He faced public frustration over rising gas prices — even though gasoline was higher under Biden and, adjusted for inflation, higher under Obama. He faced weak poll numbers and the possibility that Republicans could lose the House and perhaps even the Senate in the midterms.
Yet Trump acted.
He ordered military strikes against Iran. He attacked a regime that for decades has funded terrorism, threatened America’s allies and repeatedly vowed the destruction of Israel, America and Western civilization.
Critics insist the threat was exaggerated. Iran has long denied it was building a nuclear weapon. It claimed it needs nuclear capacity for civilian purposes.
But the evidence points in the opposite direction.
In February 2025, a confidential report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, obtained by the Associated Press, found that Iran had accumulated 274.8 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity — a level the IAEA described as only a short technical step away from weapons-grade material. The report also found that Iran’s stockpile had grown dramatically in just a few months.
Seven months later came another warning. In September 2025, the Associated Press reported on yet another confidential IAEA assessment. According to that report, Iran had increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels to more than 440 kilograms before Israel launched military operations against its nuclear facilities.
The trend line was unmistakable. Iran’s negotiators reportedly told Trump’s negotiators the regime possessed enough enriched uranium to make 11 nuclear bombs. Iran was not moving away from nuclear-weapons capability. It was moving steadily toward it.
Supporters of President Barack Obama’s Iran deal often forget two important facts.
First, the agreement contained sunset provisions. Key restrictions were scheduled to expire. Even if Iran had complied fully with the deal, many of the most important limitations would by now have been approaching expiration or already gone. Second, Iran was not complying fully. For years, the IAEA raised questions about undeclared nuclear material, restricted inspections and unresolved safeguards issues. The agency repeatedly complained about a lack of cooperation from Tehran and warned about the unprecedented size of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Peaceful nuclear programs do not require massive quantities of uranium enriched to levels that are a short technical step from weapons-grade material. Nor do peaceful programs generate confidential reports expressing grave international concern over undeclared activities and unanswered questions.
How much longer could the United States ignore the top state sponsor terror as it marches steadily toward building nuclear bombs while its leaders chant, “Death to America”? Critics call Trump’s action “a war of choice.” It was. He had the choice to push this existential threat on to the desk of his successor as did other presidents.
Asked if he would give Trump credit if the not yet released memorandum of understanding achieved Trump’s objectives, Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the leading Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, responded by defending Obama’s Iran Deal.
Iran is significantly weaker than it was three months ago. Its military prestige is in shambles. Its ability to support terror proxies is diminished. Its nuclear infrastructure sustained serious damage. Now comes the next phase. The deal’s details remain unsettled. But one thing seems certain.
Iran will cheat.
The only questions are when and to what degree. That leads to the real issue: What will Trump do when this happens?
He has demonstrated a willingness to use force. He has demonstrated a willingness to ignore popular opinion when he believes American vital interests are at stake.
If Iran violates the agreement, Trump will likely intensify pressure, military and economic, and continue squeezing its leadership until it either changes course, pays a much higher price or until the unpopular regime collapses.
Three months ago, Iran’s nuclear ambitions appeared stronger than ever. That is clearly no longer the case. Our military remains in the region with a gun pointed to the heads of the Iranian leaders. For all the outrage and hand-wringing from much of the country and the “international community,” America and the world are better off than they were before Trump acted.
History may ultimately judge that the greatest risk was not acting. It was waiting too long.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz in early March after strikes from Israel and the U.S. aimed at destroying Tehran’s military strength and its ability to build a nuclear weapon. At least 20% of the world’s oil travels through the strait each year, and its closure caused oil prices to skyrocket for weeks.
The U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, signed by both parties last week, requires Iran to immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz and charge no fees for at least 60 days while the two sides negotiate.
Well before the memorandum was signed, Iran said it would maintain control over the strait after the war and that ships transiting through would need to pay a fee for navigational and security services provided by Iranian authorities.
U.S. and European leaders have routinely rejected allowing Iran to control the strait, saying that charging fees would violate international law.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who attended the talks Thursday, reaffirmed that the Strait of Hormuz would be toll-free under any final agreement with Iran.
“You can call it a toll, you can call it a fee — whatever you want to call it, it’s a game of semantics. The reality of it is that no country on earth has a right to charge for the use of international waterways, and that will never be an acceptable condition of any deal,” Mr. Rubio said.
Mr. Rubio finished a three-day visit to the Persian Gulf countries, aimed at shoring up support for the memorandum. Gulf leaders are particularly interested in ensuring that the final agreement between the U.S. and Iran provides some guarantees for regional security.
Mr. Rubio assured Gulf leaders that any comprehensive deal with Iran would include a settlement of Iran’s ballistic missile, drone and proxy operations, which he said have destabilized the region.
The memorandum of understanding does not address Iran’s missile and drone program, the destruction of which was a key war goal of the Trump administration, or Tehran’s support for proxy groups such as the Houthis, Hamas or Hezbollah.
President Trump also said Thursday that he was open to Iran keeping its ballistic missiles because other countries in the region have them as well.
The U.S. and Iran continued to disagree publicly over the use of frozen assets.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly and a key negotiator in peace talks, rebutted U.S. claims — floated by officials earlier this week — that Tehran would use its unfrozen assets to buy American farm products.
“America falsely claims our unfrozen assets will buy their agriculture. Interesting,” he wrote on X. “The only crop we’re harvesting is what you planted: decades of mistrust. It’s organic, abundant, and homegrown. But apparently, the U.S. only exports GMO soybeans, broken promises and trash talks.”
The memorandum says the U.S. and Iran must “mutually agree on the procedures related to the release of these funds” before Iran can access the nearly $24 billion in frozen assets.
Trump administration officials have repeatedly said that the release of the funds would be conditional and could be used only in ways the U.S. approved.
“As the MOU states, the United States must approve how the funds are used. As Vice President [J.D.] Vance announced this week, if Iranian assets are released, they will be used to purchase American agricultural products to feed the Iranian people,” a U.S. official told The Washington Times.

The Senate late Wednesday held a second vote in as many days on a measure to end the war with Iran, this time with a different result designed to please President Trump.
It worked.
Two of the four Republicans who helped pass the war powers resolution on Tuesday changed their positions the following day, acquiescing to the president who argued their previous positions undermined his leverage to negotiate a peace deal.
“Wow! The Senate just changed its vote on Iran,” Mr. Trump posted on social media, thanking Republicans who ensured the redo vote to end the war failed. “This vote puts Iran on notice!”
Senate Democrats have forced procedural votes on war powers resolutions to end hostilities against Iran nearly weekly since the conflict started.
On Tuesday, they took advantage of GOP absences to bring up a House-passed version of the war powers resolution for a direct up or down vote.

The measure passed 50-48, but would have deadlocked in a tie had Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and David McCormick of Pennsylvania voted.
Mr. McConnell has been absent for nearly two weeks due to an unspecified medical issue. Mr. McCormick left the Senate that afternoon to travel with Mr. Trump to his home state for a factory visit and rally focused on the economy.
The president was livid that four Republican “losers” voted for the measure and allowed it to pass, saying it undermined his leverage in peace negotiations with Iran and effectively “provided aid and comfort to the enemy.”
“Iran asked my people, ’what does that all mean?’” Mr. Trump posted on social media. “These Senators have just made my job more difficult, but I will get it done, one way or the other, because I always get it done!”
Mr. Trump took his frustrations over the vote into a Wednesday lunch meeting with Senate Republicans at the U.S. Capitol, where he asked why any of them would have supported the war powers resolution.
Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, one of the four Republicans who voted for it, asked whether it was a rhetorical question or whether the president really wanted to know. Mr. Trump welcomed an answer, so the senator gave him one.
“I stood and said, ‘You have not told the American people what’s going on. It was supposed to last four weeks; it’s lasted four months. Our original objectives have not been achieved, and I want to know what’s going on,’” Mr. Cassidy said, recounting the conversation to reporters after the meeting.
He said Mr. Trump “did not particularly care” for that assessment and raised his voice in response.
The senator admitted he also lost his temper, saying it was inappropriate, but he matched the president’s tone and volume and the argument went back and forth.
“I make no apologies for standing up to the president, if you will, trying to demand that more information be shared with the Senate, and more information be shared with the American people,” Mr. Cassidy said.
Senate Republicans quickly orchestrated the redo war powers vote after the president’s blowup.
“The president’s concern about Iran being emboldened by this vote in the middle of negotiations to end this war is not unwarranted. Frankly, it’s just common sense,” South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said on X. “What’s ironic is that votes like this have the unintended consequence of extending the conflict.”
Mr. Graham suggested the Senate revote on the measure and defeat it. But the Senate could not take up the same resolution that had already passed, so they held a procedural vote on another war powers measure Democrats successfully advanced a few weeks ago – again due to GOP absences.
This time, they killed it in a 47-50 vote, with Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul voting “present.”
Mr. McConnell was still absent for the vote, as was Sen. Michael Bennet, Colorado Democrat.
Mr. Cassidy flipped his vote to “no” just hours after his blowup with the president, attributing his change of heart to finally receiving a briefing from the administration on how it plans to achieve the objectives laid out at the start of the war.
“I want to thank Vice President Vance and Special Envoy Witkoff for the thorough briefing this afternoon on Iran,” Mr. Cassidy posted on X, referring to Vice President J.D. Vance and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. “I appreciate the quick invitation to the White House to address many of my concerns.”
Mr. Paul, the only Republican who has sided with Democrats on every single war powers vote, changed his vote to “present” based on the president’s argument that it was sending the wrong signal to Iran.
“My opinion on the debate over war and executive power has not changed,” he said on X. “But since hostilities seem to be over and the President asked me to give consideration to his negotiating position, I will do so.”
Mr. Paul said his “present” vote is a way to give Mr. Trump “more space and leverage to negotiate a lasting peace.”
Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska maintained their support for ending the war, which Congress has not authorized.
Democrats say the measure Republicans rejected on Wednesday does not override the one they passed on Tuesday.
Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat who authored the resolution Republicans called up for Wednesday night’s vote, said he would still vote for it, but it is now “completely superfluous” since both chambers have already acted.
“Congress has clearly spoken and rebuked the president for starting an illegal war and saying he can’t restart it without us,” he said.
There is a key difference, however, between the war powers resolution Congress passed and the others the Senate has rejected.
The latter have been joint resolutions of disapproval that carry the force of law. Had the joint resolutions reached Mr. Trump’s desk, he would have vetoed them and Congress would not have been able to muster up the two-thirds majority to override it.
The House structured its war powers measure as a concurrent resolution, which is effectively a message approved by both chambers of Congress that does not go to the president for signature. That is what both chambers passed.
Concurrent resolutions do not typically carry the force of law, but Democrats argue that this one is binding because of authorities that the 1973 War Powers Act gave Congress to prevent or stop armed conflicts that don’t have congressional approval.
Democrats said they are prepared to enforce the congressionally approved war powers resolution through the courts if necessary, but Republicans say they are not worried since the Supreme Court has previously ruled concurrent resolutions unconstitutional.

A new poll of New York City Democrat voters should serve as a warning sign not just for Democrat leaders, but for anyone paying attention to the direction of American politics.
According to a new survey from Honan Strategy Group, only 25% of New York City Democrats believe the national Democrat Party is effectively standing up to President Donald Trump. An overwhelming 74% say the party is falling short. Even more striking, just 22% believe the Democrat Party is doing a good or excellent job advocating for working people, while 78% rate the party’s performance as only fair or poor.
The message is clear: even Democrat voters in one of the most left-wing cities in America are increasingly dissatisfied with their own party.
But what makes this poll especially significant is where voters appear to want the party to go next.
Half of New York City Democrat voters say electing a new generation of younger, more progressive Democrats should be a higher priority than protecting incumbent lawmakers. Among voters who expressed a clear preference, younger progressive challengers outpaced experienced leaders by more than two to one.
This comes at a time when younger Democrats across the country are increasingly embracing ideas that would have been considered politically radical just a few years ago. Socialist candidates continue to gain traction in major cities, particularly among younger voters who feel disconnected from traditional Democrat leadership.
We have already seen this trend emerge with politicians such as Zohran Mamdani, whose rise has been fueled largely by younger voters frustrated with the political establishment. Similar movements have appeared in cities across the country, where candidates running on more progressive platforms have successfully challenged longtime Democrat incumbents.
The problem for Democrat leaders is that dissatisfaction alone does not guarantee better outcomes.
Many voters are frustrated because they believe the party has lost touch with working-class Americans. Ironically, however, many of the younger candidates gaining support often advocate policies that move even further away from the economic concerns of ordinary voters and toward ideological issues that dominate college campuses and activist circles.
For years, universities have increasingly promoted the idea that America’s economic system is fundamentally unfair, that capitalism is the root cause of inequality, and that government intervention is the primary solution to social problems. Students are often taught to view issues through a framework of oppressors and the oppressed, while alternative viewpoints receive far less attention.
As a result, many young voters are entering politics with a deep distrust of existing institutions, including the Democrat Party itself.
That does not mean every criticism of the Democrat Party is wrong. In fact, many concerns expressed by voters in this poll are understandable. Working-class Americans have faced rising housing costs, economic uncertainty, and declining trust in institutions. Voters have every right to demand better representation from their elected officials.
The question is whether replacing establishment Democrats with candidates who are significantly further to the left will actually solve those problems.
The poll suggests many Democrat voters believe the answer is yes. Yet history offers reasons for caution. Political parties often respond to dissatisfaction by moving toward their most energized activists rather than toward the broader electorate. That strategy can generate enthusiasm within a primary but create challenges in a general election.
What this survey ultimately reveals is a Democrat Party experiencing an identity crisis.
Its own voters are unhappy with its leadership. They are unhappy with its messaging. They are unhappy with its ability to challenge Trump. And increasingly, they are looking for an entirely new generation to take control.
The danger for Democrats is that the political energy filling that vacuum is not necessarily moderate reform. It is a movement being driven largely by younger progressives who believe the party has not gone far enough.
If these trends continue, New York City may offer a preview of where the Democrat Party is headed nationally. The party’s voters clearly want change. The question now is whether that change will bring Democrats back toward working-class voters — or push them even further toward the progressive activism that helped create this dissatisfaction in the first place.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville said on Wednesday that it may be time for Democrats to split with the party’s Marxist wing after a string of primary victories in New York City on Tuesday.
Rep. Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, lost his primary to Brad Lander, a democratic socialist challenger who has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
Goldman, a two-term incumbent, was one candidate defeated as allies of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted victories across the city.
Two other candidates endorsed by Mamdani also won their races Tuesday.
Assemblywoman Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier both won their races.
Each of them identifies as “democratic socialist.”
Speaking on Wednesday’s “Politicon” podcast, Carville said the results had convinced him Democrats should consider a formal break with that faction of the party.
Referring to Avila Chevalier, Carville cited a New York Times report that she had previously said white people should not be in interracial marriages.
“Lady, I ain’t in the same party as you,” Carville said. “I’m sorry. I’m just not.”
He continued by saying Democrats should begin discussing a breakup within their party.
“I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk the ‘s’ word: schism,” Carville said. “I really do. Everybody’s always said, ‘No, no. We’re a coalition. We’re a big tent.’ And there’s just some s**t I can’t be in the same tent with.”
Carville argued that despite their primary victories, he does not view democratic socialist candidates as members of the same political movement to which he belongs.

“These people are not Democrats,” he said.
Carville added that party leaders should “negotiate the terms of a schism” with socialists.
“But I’m done,” he said. “I’m not in that f***ing political party.”
“I am totally comfortable in a political party that spends time questioning the policies of the government of Israel. In fact, I’m enthusiastic about that,” Carville added.
He concluded, ”I don’t want to be in a political party that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist. That’s just not — I just can’t do that.”
