What to know about the Iran war today:

• Senior Trump administration officials met at Camp David on Friday to discuss the war with Iran and escalating conflict between the Iran-backed Houthi militia and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government army.
• President Trump claimed at a rally Friday night that if the U.S. were to end the war immediately, it would still take Iran years to rebuild the damage to its infrastructure. "We could leave tomorrow, and it would take them years to rebuild from what we did to them because they just wouldn't negotiate," Mr. Trump said. "They played their cards. They played their cards too tough."
• Mr. Trump said European leaders agreed on Friday to release a massive amount of their diesel oil stockpiles to help alleviate high prices following an emergency meeting of the Group of Seven leaders. The news came as multiple vessels were struck transiting the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, with the latest incident reported Sunday morning.

Referencing "decision" he'll make on Iran, Trump says "we'll have it the easy way, or the hard way"

Prior to traveling to Vandalia, Ohio, to host a midterm campaign rally on Saturday, President Trump referenced "a decision" he's going to make regarding Iran while speaking to reporters at the White House.

"We have a decision that I'll make about Iran," said Mr. Trump. "Iran's been decimated, so the only question is, it'll either be the easy way or the hard way, or we'll have it the easy way, or the hard way." 

His comments followed reports that senior Trump administration officials met Friday at Camp David to discuss the Iran war and escalating conflict between the Houthis and Saudis. Among the officials at that meeting was Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who told reporters Saturday that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is "ironclad," but said Mr. Trump has "all the options he needs on the table" if Iran continues to "play games" with the waterway.

With midterms approaching, high gas prices prompt states to waive taxes and other regulations

As critical November midterm elections approach, state officials across the U.S. are focusing on rising gas and diesel prices tied to the Iran war, as affordability remains a leading concern for voters. 

Ohio is among about one-third of states that have instituted fuel tax relief in some form or another, with its lawmakers on Wednesday passing a 90-day state gas tax holiday that earned broad bipartisan support. 

A number of other states have taken action to ease fuel costs within the last week. Some have suspended their fuel taxes, while others have temporarily reduced theirs or adopted targeted relief measures for farmers, loggers and others who use a special type of diesel fuel.

Yemen announces military operation to "retake the remaining territories" from Houthis

Yemen will begin military operations to retake all territories currently held by Iran-backed Houthi fighters, the head of Yemen's presidential council, Rashad al-Alimi, announced Sunday.

"I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory," Alimi said in a statement, marking the latest major escalation in the conflict between Yemen's internationally recognized and Saudi-backed government and the Houthis.

On Sunday, Alimi called on "the armed forces, security forces and all military formations to begin carrying out their assigned missions, in accordance with the approved plans, until the country is liberated from the grip of the Houthi terrorist militia."

The announcement followed a rapid offensive by the Houthis last month, which saw them seize large swaths of the Red Sea coastline.

Earlier Sunday, several security sources also told AFP that the group had effectively encircled Taiz after cutting the main supply route to the city, which is held by Yemen's government.

Unknown projectile strikes tanker in Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO says

An unknown projectile struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, a British maritime security agency. The projectile damaged the tanker's engine room, but its crew was safe, the agency said Sunday. It didn't specify when or exactly where the incident occurred.

No environmental impacts were reported in connection with the strike, the agency said, adding that authorities had opened an investigation into the incident. Vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz are advised to transit with caution.

Hegseth calls U.S. blockade of Strait of Hormuz "ironclad"

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is "ironclad" and that President Trump has "all the options he needs on the table" if Iran continues to "play games" with the strait.

"Iran wants to play games with things like the Strait of Hormuz. They don't control it, we do," Hegseth told reporters. "They have literally gotten nothing through. Our blockade has been ironclad and we're running almost at prewar levels every single night through that, you see that as far as the throughput."

He added: "So we feel like we're in a very strong position. Iran ought make the right choice. If they don't, the president is going to have all the options he needs on the table. But he is not going to let these things extend unnecessarily. He understands what the mission is and we can get it done when called upon."

Hegseth also said that Mr. Trump is "hellbent" on Iran not having a nuclear weapon.

"The message is very simple: Iran will never ever ever have a nuclear weapon. President Trump is hell-bent and determined to ensure that they do not; they will not," Hegseth said.

325 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves released, IEA says

Member countries have so far released 325 million barrels of oil and oil-derivative products from strategic reserves, from 400 million barrels promised in March, the International Energy Agency said Saturday.

The update came a day after G7 countries, in coordination with the IEA, agreed to immediately release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil to ease global energy supply concerns caused by fallout from the U.S.-Iran war.

The G7 did not say whether the 100 million barrels included the outstanding 75 million barrels from the March IEA commitment, or came on top of that.

President Trump has been pressuring allies to release diesel reserves to ease a spike in prices for the fuel, being felt in America and elsewhere.

Restricted diesel supplies are one of the consequences of the war in the Middle East, where Iran has been throttling ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli attacks.

DUBAI, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The Strait of ​Hormuz will not reopen until seven Iranian conditions set out in a June interim agreement with the US ‌are met, state media reported Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as saying on Sunday.

Iran presented a proposal during the UN General Assembly under which the Strait of Hormuz waterway could be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days if the conditions were met, with the US replying to ​this proposal last week via Qatari intermediaries.

"The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and firm, and ​the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions, based on the Islamabad ⁠Memorandum of Understanding, are met," Qalibaf, who is Iran's top negotiator, was quoted as saying.

He said Washington "must understand that the period of ​dragging out the (diplomatic) process and dictating one-sided demands is over".

IRAN SAYS NO NUCLEAR DISCUSSIONS

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Sunday that Tehran ​had clarified its broad positions via mediators to the US response but that additional points remained to be communicated to Washington.

"The Americans' propositions are more or less in line with their previous positions, specifically on the nuclear issue. We told them our focus in this stage is the issue of the ​Strait of Hormuz and the return to security in this waterway requires clear steps from the US," spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said.

He ​also denied Tehran had offered UN nuclear watchdog inspections of its nuclear facilities in exchange for US sanctions relief, saying Iran had not entered into ‌nuclear ⁠discussions with Washington.

The document being circulated outlines a seven-day period of trust-building aimed at returning the two sides to an enhanced version of the memorandum of understanding agreed in June, including concrete steps on Iran's nuclear programme, an official briefed on the talks said last week.

The disagreement centres on the sequencing of the steps rather than the components of the plan, the official added.

WARNING FROM ARAQCHI

Qatar has been ​shuttling messages between Washington and Tehran ​in an effort to end ⁠the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas before the war that began at the end of February with US ​and Israeli attacks on Iran.

The June memorandum of understanding led to a brief ceasefire and included ​provisions on the ⁠strait and Iran's nuclear programme.

Separately, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told foreign ambassadors and diplomats in Tehran on Sunday that Tehran hoped Washington would choose diplomacy but warned that Iran was prepared to respond if the US again chose military action.

On Thursday, sources told Reuters that Iran was preparing ​a broader and more forceful response if Washington resumed large-scale military attacks.

“If they again ​move towards military solutions, we are more prepared than before and will take whatever action is necessary to defend ourselves,” Araqchi said on Sunday.

Army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia told ​Fars news agency on Sunday Iran would upgrade the range of its missiles.

Iran is weighing how to respond to growing US pressure as nuclear negotiations with Washington remain stalled, creating an increasingly complex regional situation, a senior Israeli defense official said on Friday.

"The Iranians are looking for tools within this campaign. They are asking themselves how they can get out of this situation. It is reasonable to assume that they are also discussing the possibility of influencing the elections in order to understand the other side," the official said.

The senior defense official said there had recently been a large number of unresolved incidents, some of which could potentially develop into attacks on the Israeli home front from a variety of directions, and not necessarily from Iran.

"There were many warnings and many nights when the system was occupied with clarifying the situation and raising and lowering the alert level. There were many nights of heightened readiness. Hezbollah? It definitely factors into Iran's calculations if Iran enters into a confrontation with Israel," the official said.

According to the defense official, the Iranians are constantly assessing the situation in the US and the extent of Washington's readiness to enter into a confrontation with them, and this affects Tehran's own assessment of the situation.

Economic pressure mounts on Iran

The official also stressed that conditions in Iran are deteriorating and that the effect of US sanctions can be clearly seen.

The number of tankers leaving the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz has been rising, and according to IDF data, an average of 30 to 40 tankers are now passing through each day. That figure reflects levels seen before the war. In other words, Iranian influence in the strait is declining.

The official also noted that the Iranian rial had reached a new low in recent days, with nearly 2.5 million rials now equivalent to one US dollar. At the same time, he clarified that Iran had not yet reached hyperinflation.

The official illustrated the economic situation by citing a critical article in an Iranian newspaper identified with the regime that compared the price of eggs in Iran with the average salary, adding that the cost of living in Iran was now "unbearable."

Compounding the economic pressure is what the official described as a US naval blockade of Iran that began this week. In addition to the sanctions, he said, the measure contains elements that are humiliating for Tehran because it prevents even family visits to neighboring countries.

As a result, the Iranians quickly approached neighboring countries and asked them to restore civilian flights. So far, according to the official, only Iraq has agreed, while there are currently no flights with Azerbaijan.

Israel prepares for risk of escalation

Israeli defense officials assess that Tehran is considering how to respond to the situation, what tools remain available to it, and what form its response should take. As evidence, they point to Iranian efforts to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz that have so far failed.

The defense establishment believes Iran's range of options has narrowed significantly because of the naval blockade. This comes alongside Iranian attempts to carry out attacks abroad that have also failed, according to the assessment.

Israeli defense officials further assess that unless Iran attempts to break the blockade through a deliberate military move or reaches understandings with the US, it will be forced to contend with worsening domestic problems caused by the sanctions.

The IDF is therefore preparing for the possibility that an Iranian initiative could spiral out of control, such as a cruise missile striking a US vessel and causing fatalities, creating a situation in which it would be unclear how Washington would respond.

Israeli defense officials also assess that if the Iranians conclude that they are about to come under attack, or that the regime is losing ground in its confrontation with the US, they could potentially launch attacks against US assets in Jordan or Israel.

A senior official said the Iranians understand very well what the price of such a move would be, and that this is why they have not attacked Israel.

DUBAI, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has resigned ​and Hamid Bovard, chief executive ‌of the government-owned National Iranian Oil Company, will be in charge of the ​ministry as acting minister, state ​media said on Sunday, without ⁠providing a reason for the resignation.

Mohsen ​Paknejad has been the oil ​minister of the OPEC member country since August 2024 and resigns as the seven-month ​war between Iran and the ​US puts pressure on the country's economy.

"With acceptance of ‌Mohsen ⁠Paknejad's resignation by Dr. Pezeshkian [the country's president], Hamid Bovard has been appointed as acting oil minister", state ​media ​cited an ⁠official at the president's office as saying.

Paknejad was ​cited by state media, ahead ​of ⁠the news of his resignation, as saying "revenues of the oil that we ⁠have ​sold are still ​coming and that will continue God willing".
