CAIRO—The latest attack on the King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia's capital of Riyadh killed 12 people and injured over 300 others, civil aviation authorities said early Sunday, with some in critical condition. A Saudi-led coalition blamed Iran-backed Houthi terrorists in neighboring Yemen.
It was the deadliest attack in any Gulf Arab country since the start of the Iran war, whose fronts have expanded to include the recent surge in fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces.
The Saudi statement said the dead included four Saudi citizens as well as two Bangladeshi nationals, a Palestinian, a U.S. citizen, an Egyptian, a Jordanian, a Syrian and a Sudanese. It said the injured were being treated at several hospitals.
Footage posted on social media following the attack and analyzed by The Associated Press shows emergency vehicles outside the airport.
Saudi civil aviation authorities on Saturday said airport operations were suspended. The closure was later extended by 24 hours until 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the flight tracking platform Flightradar 24.
Trump Said He Would Consider Joining Strikes Against Houthis
Shortly after the attack on Saturday afternoon, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was evaluating whether the United States should join Saudi strikes against the Houthis. “We may. We’re going to look at it,” he said. “We just found out about the recent attack. So we’ll make a decision. We move very quickly.”
Trump later Saturday said he planned to speak to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and said “what happened in Saudi Arabia is not acceptable.” Asked if the U.S. might get involved, Trump responded, “We’ll find out.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged in a social media post that an American citizen had been killed in the attack, which he condemned.
“These reprehensible attacks demonstrate a blatant disregard for innocent civilian life. They must stop now,” he said.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis blamed them for the attack, calling it a “fully-fledged war crime” and vowing a firm response. The airport has no military facilities.
There was no immediate statement from the terrorists, who earlier Saturday accused Saudi Arabia of striking Sanaa International Airport in the Houthi-held Yemeni capital.
The Houthis claimed attacks earlier in the week on King Khalid International Airport that killed three Saudis, including a pilot. The surge in attacks, including against other Saudi airports, military facilities and oil infrastructure, has come in the week since a Saudi-led coalition launched a major military offensive against the Houthis.
The airport had a heavy police presence on Saturday, with all entrances blocked, and lights around the complex were dimmed. Flights diverted elsewhere, Flightradar24 said. Countries including the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, and Canada warned citizens to avoid the airport.
Also Saturday, U.S. Central Command said a fighter jet struck and disabled a commercial cargo vessel with a precision munition in the Gulf of Oman, part of U.S. efforts to maintain a naval blockade of Iranian ports. The Panama-flagged M/V Ocean Molica had departed an Iranian port and did not heed repeated warnings. The ship’s crew was unharmed, CENTCOM said.
The Saudis and the Houthis began fighting in 2015 when the kingdom entered Yemen’s civil war on behalf of the internationally recognized government. Relative calm after a 2022 ceasefire ended in July when the Houthis resumed attacks, saying the Saudis fired on the Sanaa airport as a plane from Iran was trying to land. That revived anger over the Saudi-led blockade that has largely isolated Houthi-run areas.
Now fighting has escalated, with the Saudi-led coalition providing air support for Yemeni government forces attempting to reverse recent Houthi gains along the Red Sea. Those gains gave the terrorists better surveillance of shipping on a corridor that is a crucial alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has been attacking ships.
While the Houthis have said they are only targeting Saudi shipping as part of a blockade in retaliation for the one imposed on them, concerns about wider attacks persist. The Houthis previously attacked dozens of ships after the war in Gaza began, calling it solidarity with Palestinians. A U.S. bombing campaign sharply limited that.
On Saturday, Saudi Arabia said its foreign minister and Omani counterpart spoke by phone about the importance of “supporting diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions” in the region. Oman, which lies across the Strait of Hormuz from Iran, has played a mediator role at times in the region.
Saudi Flight Disruptions Are Growing
The Houthis this week warned global airlines “for the last time” about the potential consequences of operating in Saudi airspace, which they described as a theater for their military operations.
Before the latest attack, Air India, FlyDubai, Lufthansa Group, and Pakistan International Airlines were among airlines suspending flights to and from Riyadh and other Saudi airports for varying periods.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency had expanded its guidance on Saudi airspace, noting the Houthis’ ability to strike targets deeper inside the kingdom, including Riyadh, and a “greater focus on aviation infrastructure.”
The missile and drone attacks and interception efforts “create an increased risk of misidentification of civil aircraft,” it said.
The Saudi national carrier said one of its aircraft was damaged while it was on the ground, with no passengers on board.
Meanwhile, Saudi authorities warned the public this week that “filming, publishing or sharing information related to countering missiles and drones and their impact sites exposes you to legal liability.”

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has vowed to retaliate after a suspected Houthi missile attack on Riyadh airport killed 12 people and wounded more than 300, as Donald Trump said the US could join its military campaign.
Saudi Arabia blamed the Iran-allied Houthi rebel movement for the strike on the airport on Saturday, which damaged passenger terminals. It was the deadliest attack on a Gulf country since the war with Iran started in March and an apparent escalation in the Houthis’ war with Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni government that it sponsors.
Videos circulated on social media showing travellers walking through debris-strewn ground in the airport as sirens blared. Four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals, a Palestinian, a US citizen, an Egyptian, a Jordanian, a Syrian and a Sudanese were killed in the missile strike.
On Sunday, Saudi authorities extended the airport’s closure and said schools would be moved online until Thursday.
On Saturday night, the spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, Maj Gen Turki al-Maliki, said the coalition “will respond firmly” to the attack, offering little other details.
The Houthis doubled down on their threats on Sunday, warning airlines, passengers and staff to stay away from Saudi airports. The group said “the worst is yet to come” if Saudi military action in Yemen continued.

“We renew our warning to all airlines, experts, employees, workers and travellers against using Saudi airports and airspace, as they are vulnerable to attack and have become a theatre of operations for our forces,” the Houthis said in a statement on X.
Trump said he was evaluating whether the US would join the military campaign against the Houthis, saying on Saturday: “We’re gonna look at it.” He said he would speak to the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, on Saturday night.
US involvement against the Houthis would be a further widening of the regional war that grew out of the US-Iran conflict, which so far has included fighting in Lebanon and Iraq.
The US has already been assisting with intelligence cooperation and targeting, with about 200 US military advisers stationed in Saudi Arabia to assist with the campaign. Until now, the US has not directly taken part in fighting against the Houthis.
Direct US involvement could lead the group to resume its targeting of ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab strait, through which about 10% of global maritime goods transit.
Saudi Arabia is already carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen. The group blamed the country for two airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, on Sunday. The Houthi government’s health ministry said coalition airstrikes over the last six weeks had killed 91 Yemenis and wounded 168, 60% of whom it said were women and children.
Saudi-backed government forces in Yemen launched a campaign to push the Houthis back from the areas the group conquered over the last month. Despite claiming initial successes, the government forces have not been able to loosen the Houthis’ grip over areas closest to the Bab al-Mandab strait such as Perim Island.
The Egyptian woman killed in the attack on the airport was a flight attendant identified as Azza Ramzy, 28, who worked for the Saudi airline Flynas, according to Egyptian state-run TV.

The Syrian woman was a widowed mother of four who had been living in Saudi Arabia for five years, a relative told the Associated Press. The Syrian embassy in Riyadh identified her as Buthaina Ahmad Oweida.
Her niece, Nisreen Oweida, said her aunt was 56, from Syria’s northern Idlib province, and had left during the country’s civil war. She was living in Mecca and had been returning from a visit to her sister in Riyadh when she was killed, the niece said.
The airport attack was met with a wave of international condemnation, including from the UN secretary general, António Guterres, and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
“Attacks by Iran’s proxies are pushing the region into a spiral of violence,” von der Leyen wrote on X. “They are destabilising crucial global transport and energy nodes.”
The increasing intensity of Houthi attacks against Riyadh and its energy infrastructure has brought more foreign involvement in the Yemen war. Governments are facing pressure over oil prices, already high from the US-Iran war since March.
On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey issued a joint statement saying they would move quickly to implement their mutual defence pact, including by speeding up the deployment of military forces in the kingdom.
The UK said it would assist with defensive military support of Riyadh, providing refuelling for aircraft working to intercept Houthi missiles into Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia has asked for further assistance from France, Egypt, the UK and Pakistan as its stock of interceptor missiles are running low.

The Houthis launched a military campaign to take Yemen’s Red Sea coast in early September after months of escalating tensions with the Yemeni government and its Saudi patron. The campaign interrupted years of relative calm in the country after a 2022 UN-brokered ceasefire froze frontlines between the Houthis and the government.
Despite the Saudi-supported counteroffensive, the group seems to have held on to its recent gains. It is unclear what further Saudi military action would look like against the Houthis, which resisted years of strikes by an international coalition, as well as by the US.
Saudi Arabia led an international coalition that intervened against the Houthis in Yemen in 2015 after the group took over Sana’a and toppled the Yemeni government. Recent Houthi attacks against Saudi energy infrastructure, as well as Houthi military advances, have pulled Saudi Arabia back into the Yemen war.

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Oct. 10 that Ukraine needs a new leader, one day after his administration announced a deal with Russia to supply diesel to the global market amid rising fuel prices.
Trump told reporters on Saturday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has had the opportunity to settle the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine “many times” but has chosen not to.
“That’s a war that should have never started, and I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said.
He has repeatedly urged both Ukraine and Russia over the past several weeks to stop carrying out military strikes on energy infrastructure.
On Sept. 4, Trump announced that the two countries had agreed to cease additional attacks on energy infrastructure, including oil refineries. However, Ukraine has since continued to target Russian oil and gas refineries, while Russia has continued to target Ukrainian gas stations and other energy infrastructure.
Trump echoed on Saturday his previous calls for Ukraine to stop targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure, noting that Russia supplies “a large portion” of the diesel fuel used throughout the world.
“We said you can do whatever you want to Russia. Don’t hit the refineries because that’s a world problem that’s caused,” Trump said. “And what does he do? He goes and hits the diesel fuel.”
In his comments to reporters on Saturday, Trump accused Zelenskyy of wanting to create problems for American farmers and ranchers, as well as for the rest of the world.
Trump also told reporters that if he had been president in 2022, the war would not have taken place. He added that there was “no reason” for the war to have started between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting it was due to “incompetence.”
The president said Ukraine has lost 30 percent of its country as a result of the war and that more than 2 million people have been killed between the two sides.
Trump’s remarks followed Zelenskyy's criticism of the deal between the United States and Russia in a statement released by the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, describing it as a “weak decision by strong partners.”
On Oct. 9, Trump announced that Russia had agreed to immediately export more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the global market. An additional 500,000 tons of diesel will be shipped out in November, followed by an additional million tons in December, he said.
Another 3 million tons of diesel could be delivered following the initial exports depending on the condition of Russia’s refineries, Trump said in a Truth Social post announcing the deal.
The president said the deal would result in decreased diesel prices, which have increased in recent months during the conflict between the United States and Iran and the continued war between Russia and Ukraine.
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control granted Russia a temporary general license on Friday as part of the deal to supply diesel exports.
The deal was announced on the same day as a meeting between U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and Ukrainian officials. A senior administration official told The Epoch Times that the negotiators would discuss “a new, unified proposal that is focused on all aspects of the conflict to try to end the war.”
“I believe our team is simply being used as a smokescreen. And that is certainly not fair. It is certainly not how partners should treat each other,” Zelenskyy said following Trump’s announcement of the diesel deal with Russia.
In a separate statement, Zelenskyy said the money Russia gains through diesel exports will be used to manufacture more weapons, produce missiles, upgrade drones, and recruit mercenaries to fight in the war.
“Russia’s choice is war. And they will be ready to end it only when they feel that their ability to drag the war out is diminishing,” he wrote in a statement on X.
The Trump administration’s deal with Russia came less than a month after the president signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, which included new sanctions on Russia. The bill was intended to prevent Russia from continuing to fund its war against Ukraine through oil and gas sales.
“Enough is enough. The President must end his war with Iran instead of funding Russia’s war machine. Putin only responds to strength, which means cracking down on Russia and the enablers of its war against Ukraine,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote in a joint statement on Friday.
