OPINION:

President Kennedy asked a generation what it could do for its country. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, Michigan Democrat, has an answer for the next one: If you serve your country in a Republican administration, you will go to prison.

Ms. Slotkin delivered that threat to students at the University of Chicago on Oct. 13 and said the quiet part aloud: “I want that deterrence message sent.”

Deterrence is a word for Soviet tanks, Chinese missiles and Iranian centrifuges. Ms. Slotkin, a former CIA analyst, knows the word. She aimed it instead at young Republicans who are deciding whether to work for their own government.

When the backlash hit, Ms. Slotkin tried to walk it back, saying Democrats would go only after Republicans who actually broke the law.

Yet that is the trick of weaponized injustice. Josef Stalin’s secret police chief, Lavrentiy Beria, put it in nine words: “Show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime.”

I know this from personal experience. In April 2022, then-Rep. Slotkin voted along party lines to hold me in contempt of Congress for declining to testify before Congress after President Trump invoked executive privilege.

I was the first senior White House adviser ever imprisoned for honoring that privilege. For half a century, Justice Department policy under both parties held that if Congress can jail the president’s aides for keeping his confidences, the privilege is worthless. A 1984 Justice Department opinion put the rule in writing. It was not invented for Mr. Trump. It protects whoever holds the office.

I kept my oath. Ms. Slotkin put me in prison. She did it with the help of 217 other House Democrats, a Democratic judge, a Democratic jury and an all-Democratic appeals court panel.

When the justice system enables such partisan weaponization, it is no longer just. That is why my case remains on appeal.

Please know this: Lawfare’s punishment starts long before any verdict. Every subpoena means an attorney. Every accusation becomes a headline that follows you forever. Families drain their savings. Employers back away. Friends stop calling. You can win and still be ruined.

Consider the Democrats’ targets: John Eastman was disbarred in California, then indicted in Georgia and Arizona for giving a client legal advice; Jeffrey Clark was hauled before a Washington disciplinary board that recommended disbarment “to send a message to the rest of the Bar”; Rudy Giuliani was stripped of his law licenses in New York and Washington, hit with a $148 million defamation verdict and forced into bankruptcy.

Then there is Mark Meadows, who spent $2 million in legal fees to fight a Georgia case that was thrown out and an Arizona case that collapsed. Walt Nauta, a Navy valet, was indicted for moving boxes before a judge found the prosecutor had no lawful authority. Dan Scavino was held in contempt by the same House vote that took me.

Cleta Mitchell was run out of her law firm three days after sitting in on a phone call. Gen. Michael Flynn endured four years of prosecution and had to sell his house to pay the attorneys before a pardon ended the charade.

Then there is the president himself: four indictments, 91 counts, a half-billion-dollar civil judgment and not one of them standing today.

Ms. Slotkin is hardly the lone Democrat preaching the gospel of such weaponized injustice. The list of Democrats waving the bloody shirt of lawfare is long: Susan Rice (“This is not going to be an instance of forgive and forget”), J.B. Pritzker (“The tables will turn one day”), Jason Crow (“We are taking names”), Eric Swalwell (“I hope that deters people”), Hakeem Jeffries (“To all members of the Trump administration. … Donald Trump will leave office long before the five-year statute of limitations expires. You are hereby put on notice”), Larry Krasner (referred to a group of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as “wannabe Nazis”) and James Carville (acknowledged fantasizing about Mr. Trump being “shaved, dressed in orange pajamas and spit on”).

The senator from Michigan did not write the gospel. She just read it aloud to the choir.

Of Ms. Slotkin, Mr. Trump said, “She’s a person that should be tried for what she did.” Said Sean Davis of The Federalist: she “should be censured by the Senate and then charged with treason.” Mike Davis of the Article III Project says that she “expressly called for the arrest of political opponents,” which is precisely what Democrats accuse the president of doing.

My message to Republicans: If they can come for me, your sons and daughters, then they can come for you. That alone is reason to vote on Nov. 3. Here is the clear and present broader danger.

If Democrats take Congress, Ms. Slotkin’s “Star Chamber” moves into high gear, and we have seen that movie: two years of gridlock under a thunderstorm of subpoenas, televised denunciations, contempt votes and impeachment votes.

Kennedy asked what you could do for your country. Ms. Slotkin’s answer is a subpoena and a cell. On Nov. 3, go to the polls and give her your answer.

Musk has contributed so much to the country, from his efforts to cut spending and waste with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to helping to increase free speech with X. He's provided amazing technological advancements through his companies, even flying cars and saving astronauts in space. Not to mention all the thousands of people he employs. He even made over 4,000 people millionaires when he took SpaceX public. He may be the most productive person on the face of the planet. 

Of course, he has committed a grievous offense. He's spoken out against bad Democrat policies, and he's a big donor to the Republicans. 

Yet Democrats, others on the left, and the Never Trump crew are practically salivating over the possibility that if they get power, they think they can go after him. This from the Bulwark crew was completely unhinged. Notice how they refer to the plotting underway by Democrats in Congress.

Perhaps one of the worst takes was from Democrat political commentator and former Clinton Secretary of Labor Robert Reich. He spoke about how the Democrats needed to "defund Musk." Then, it got even worse when he said the Democrats should start laying the groundwork to "nationalize" Musk's companies.

If we tend to forget how bad it was, our friends on the Left simply chose not to know. As of October 27, 2022—just four years ago—former president and future presidential candidate Donald Trump was still permanently banned from Twitter, the world’s leading political forum.

On the night of the long knives, January 8, 2021, some 70,000 Trump followers were purged along with the sitting president. Within days of Trump’s Twitter ban, YouTube and Facebook followed suit. For the next two years, at the urging of the Biden White House, the social media giants suppressed information about the subjects most in need of debate: election integrity, climate change, and COVID most forcefully.

Kimmel wasn’t suspended for Melania joke, but for lying about Charlie Kirk’s murder

Leftists who fret over the brief suspension of Jimmy Kimmel or the even briefer banishment of certain news organizations from the White House sat silently throughout this crackdown, the most consequential infringement of free speech in their lifetimes.

Biden apologists lamely contended that the First Amendment had no relevance for private enterprises like Twitter. The justices of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit thought otherwise. Their ruling in Missouri v. Biden showed just how fascism works: private companies make the money, the government makes the decisions, the media make believe nothing is out of order. In the first paragraph of their decision, the justices disabused the apologists of their excuses:

“For the last few years—at least since the 2020 presidential transition—a group of federal officials has been in regular contact with nearly every major American social-media company about the spread of ‘misinformation’ on their platforms. In their concern, those officials— hailing from the White House, the CDC, the FBI, and a few other agencies—urged the platforms to remove disfavored content and accounts from their sites. And, the platforms seemingly complied.”

To be sure, deep-state media control preceded Joe Biden’s ascension to the White House. One particular incident illustrates just how deep the penetration was. The story involves one James Baker, the general counsel of the FBI at the time he and other intel officials were scheming to derail Trump for alleged Russia collusion.

In 2018, Baker got caught leaking unauthorized information to the media. This disgrace did not stop Twitter from hiring Baker as deputy general counsel in June 2020. He arrived just in time to control the COVID narrative and corrupt the upcoming election. At a February 2023 House Judiciary Committee hearing, Baker was asked, in particular, about his role in suppressing the New York Post’s killer story about the Hunter Biden laptop.

To virtually every salient question regarding the laptop, Baker pleaded memory loss. “You were entrusted with the highest level of power at Twitter, but when you were faced with the New York Post story, instead of allowing people to judge the information for themselves, you rushed to find a reason why the American people shouldn’t see it,” said committee chair James Comer. “You did this because you were terrified of Joe Biden not winning the election in 2020.”

One poll showed that 17 percent of Democrats would have switched their vote had they known of the laptop. This number is too high, but 1 percent would have been enough to change the election’s outcome and the world’s future.

A one-time “Obama fanboy,” Elon Musk had seen enough. Musk took his first red pill in May 2020 when a COVID-manic California tried to shut down production at Tesla’s Fremont plant just as it was about to gear up. Musk was outraged. Said he in his Braveheart moment, “Give people back their goddamn freedom.”

His eyes opened, Musk began to see the “antiscience, antimerit, and antihuman” effects of the “woke-mind virus.” So enlightened, he made a series of moves that left willfully blind liberals like biographer Walter Isaacson befuddled. If Musk believed Twitter “had suppressed certain viewpoints,” Isaacson refused to see either the suppression or its consequences.

As a case in point, Isaacson dedicated barely a page to the New York Post story “about what was purported to be” Hunter Biden’s laptop. Purported? The Musk biography was published in 2023, two years after the FBI acknowledged the Post’s accuracy. The story of this unprecedented media-security state conspiracy deserved its own angry book, not a skeptical, half-hearted page.

But that was the state of the world before X. In October 2022, establishment liberals like Isaacson controlled not only the social media networks, but also the vast majority of mainstream media newsrooms throughout the Western world. These like-minded souls decided which subjects could be discussed and what could be said about them. That changed on October 27, 2022. When Musk sprung Trump and his supporters, Facebook and YouTube felt compelled to spring them as well.

Musk’s opening of the Twitter files in December 2022 had an effect not unlike the opening of the Soviet vaults after the collapse of the communist empire. Intellectually honest leftists had the opportunity to see how badly they had been played. Some took advantage. But not most, not even many. For all of Elon’s efforts, leftists are no more inclined to believe the “big guy” guilty of extortion than Alger Hiss was guilty of treason.

They may love their Teslas and marvel at StarLink and SpaceX, but unfiltered truth is something our proto-commie friends cannot abide.

The West would do well to remember King Solomon’s most famous ruling. 

Last weekend, France erupted in widespread rioting. One French official put the number involved in protests at 550,000. Of those, more than 100,000 were in Paris, including on Paris’ famous Champs-Élysées Avenue. The marauders vandalized at least 3,000 shops. They stole from high-end stores like Apple and Louis Vuitton. And they turned cars and government buildings into bonfires. The most dramatic was the burning of the town hall of Limoges, France. The 143-year-old building had survived the Nazis, but not this black-clad mob waving Palestinian flags. Police arrested around 2,400 people. 

French President Emmanuel Macron described the riots as “political and seditious acts by ultra-left groups whose aim is to bring down the Republic.”

Far-left politicians and political groups are openly siding with the rioters. Seven left-wing political parties have objected to restrictions on new demonstrations. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left Indomitable France party, took part in the Paris protests. He lashed out at police for “unleashing” on the crowds. He seems to think that rallying with the rioters will help his chances in the April presidential election. 

What a contrast to a month ago, when Pope Leo held an open-air Mass on that same street, Champs-Élysées Avenue. It was attended by 800,000 people. There were many French flags in the massive crowd. The event took place during daylight, and attendees had no reason to hide their faces. 

France isn’t the only Western country dealing with violent uprisings. Recent riots in Milan, Italy, injured almost 200 police officers. Of the 330 people whom police detained, around half were foreigners or children of immigrants. Many of the rioters also flew the Palestinian flag. In recent years, America has seen similar scenes in New York City, Washington, D.C. and many college campuses. 

These protests aren’t merely organic uprisings. Dozens of groups that seek to destroy the West are coordinating and amplifying these violent outbursts. Some are anarchists. Some are communists and socialists. Some are foreigners. They may not share the same long-term goals, but they are rallying around a common cause — destroying the West.

To understand their lust for violence, consider a dilemma King Solomon once faced. As I Kings 3 recounts, two prostitutes once came to him. They had each had a son and lived in the same house. One night, one of the boys died. One woman claimed she woke up to discover a dead boy next to her, but she realized it wasn’t her son. She claimed the other woman had switched babies during the night.

Since Solomon didn’t have DNA testing, he asked for a sword. He said he would cut the living boy in half and give a piece to each woman. The false mother agreed, but the true mother said the other woman should have the boy. Because she loved her son, she didn’t want him to die. Solomon then knew that woman was the boy’s mother. 

Here’s the point. Antifa, the DSA, Muslims who want to impose Sharia law and some immigrants who don’t assimilate are like the mother who’d be perfectly happy with half a dead baby. These groups don’t love America, France, Italy or whatever country they are in. They want to destroy it and remake its government. They want to erase its past to write a new future. They want to plunder its wealth for themselves. 

They don’t value the country they are in because they don’t consider it — its heritage, its institutions, its values, its people, its land — to be theirs. This is why they are perfectly happy to use violence to accomplish their goals. They aim to conquer. 

It’s up to those of us who love this country — and the leaders we elect — to stop them.

At the end of every trial, the respective legal representatives, defense and prosecution, deliver their closing arguments to the jury before deliberation.

This is the final week before the very consequential midterm elections. The American people are the jury, and they are hearing diametrically opposed arguments. I have said this before and will reiterate: this is not about two political parties, Republican and Democrat. This is an ideological confrontation between constitutional conservatism (classical liberalism) and Marxism/Islamism. The long-term ramifications of this election are not just about “political power” in Washington, D.C., or even in several respective states. It is truly about America 300, charting the course for the next 50 years in the sense of this constitutional republic, the longest continuously running in the history of the world.

This election, in our 250th year of independence, is firmly about two competing visions of individual liberty. I sadly must admit that the political party known as the Republican Party is horrific at messaging. The other political party is very adept at manipulating language and tugging at the emotional heartstrings as they enslave the indomitable individual spirit. Consider how perplexing it should be to hear a political party that embraces collective subjugation try to champion affordability. I tend to laugh my a*s off when I hear leftists ramble on about healthcare costs when they passed legislation and signed it into law under the deceptive name, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Now, these same delusional decepticons are trying to make us believe that they can solve the issue of healthcare affordability, which they have made unaffordable. Their insidious solution is just to have the government, them, take over the entire healthcare system: Medicare for All. Like, sure, that is a winning strategy: socialized healthcare.

It is just the same as they are laughably attempting to make us believe that they care about high gas prices. It was the leftists, going back to Barack Hussein Obama, who wanted exorbitant fuel prices to force Americans to buy overpriced electric vehicles. Ya think fuel prices are high now? Just wait until the Marxists force the Green New Deal 2.0 on America, along with unachievable fuel economy standards. Leftists have admitted in this election cycle that they desire to end oil and natural gas. They are the ones continuously blocking any and all efforts of America to increase its fossil fuel exploration, production, refining, consumption, and even export. I am sure you all remember the leftist assault against the Keystone XL pipeline. Now, do you really think that the Marxist energy agenda will bring down gas prices?

And all the leftist blather about high prices… where were their voices during the Biden administration when inflation topped 9.1 percent?

The leftist plan for America’s economic security: more government spending to chain more Americans to government largesse, at the expense of our free market economic system. Marxists hate American innovation and ingenuity because it is reflective of individual liberty. Funny, leftists used to be all in on railing against millionaires, until Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) became millionaires. Now they hate billionaires, but only the ones who are not Marxists and Islamists.

So, in my closing argument, I think it is evident that the Marxist left truly has no grounds to speak on when it comes to our economic and energy security, as well as the issue of healthcare and affordability. I think it is simple to surmise that Obamacare was intended to fail. How duplicitous that Marxists say they hate insurance companies, yet they shut down the government for them to get taxpayer-funded subsidies.

Perhaps we have forgotten what the border looked like during the Biden administration. Do we really want to go back to that? The Marxists have declared their desire for open borders, and no, this is not just a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) objective. Now, if you are upset with ICE, well, you should really be upset with the leftists who are providing “sanctuary” for those here illegally and undermining law enforcement, precluding them from protecting our streets, to the detriment of American citizens. Shall I remind you of the names Sheridan Gorman, Rachel Morin, and Laken Riley? Leftists prefer criminal illegal aliens like the “Maryland Man” or the New Yorker who has been here illegally, is a member of a criminal gang, and was convicted of armed robbery. 

Yes, I know that the war against the number-one sponsor of Islamic terrorism, Iran, the one that has killed and maimed thousands of Americans, is not popular. But consider who the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) prefers to win the midterm elections? Don’t know? Just read their 26-page endorsement of the Marxist left in America. And should we really entrust our national security congressional oversight to an ideology that is allied with Islamic jihadists?

We can certainly have a debate about the social issues, but I tend not to care for those who would dismember a baby in the womb right up until birth. That is called infanticide. Or the same people who would criminally punish parents who would not allow THEIR children to have their bodies mutilated because they do not agree with the mental condition of gender dysphoria.

No, Republicans did not deliver on the SAVE America Act, something that had an 81 percent approval from the American people. They stumble about the ideological battlefield. And some of them make some very questionable political ads, but the case against Marxist control of America has to be understood. With all of their faults, failures, and shortcomings, at least Republicans know what a woman is and do not want biological males in bathroom facilities with REAL women.
