A nation lives through the hearts of its people. America is an ideal as much, if not more, than a nationality. The American ideal traditionally has been to live free and do no harm to others. In that ideal, we become Americans by assimilating to the values of our nation-freedom, equality, respect for others, rule of law. Founded in the principle that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us, we have the freedom to own land, to enterprise with our skills and dreams, to worship how we see fit, and, as Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 3:13, to "enjoy the good of all his labor, it is the gift of God." This is America. If you hold to these principles, you are an American. It's an ideal that lives in your heart.
 
Lately, especially in the last nine years, the American ideal has come under tremendous threat. There are people in gangs like Antifa, the news media, and even elected politicians who do not ascribe to the American ideal. In fact, they want to tear down everything that is American, and as the immediate past "president" put it, "remake America." It is in their heart to oppose everything that is American-its history, its capitalism, its religious foundations, its family units, its natural affections for those who are countrymen. This spirit that lives in these people is a rebellious one. The heart of these is as described in Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it."
 
There are those, however, who still embody the heart and spirit of America. They believe in freedom. They abide by the laws. They respect others. They stand for what is right according to a Godly standard. They are willing to speak up and take action when there is injustice. They hold dear to the creed that all men are created equal and have the God-given right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They have a love for family. They are loyal. They are trustworthy. They are not afraid of a fight, but seek peace first. In short they are a King David type of people, to whom God may testify as conveyed in Acts 13:22, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will."
 
One way or another, if you are reading this, you are the heart of our nation. Whether you are a God-fearing American, one who understands that the American ideal and values also flow from the heart of God who created all things and called them good, or if you are a rebellious spirit having a wicked heart living in America, there is before you a choice of good or evil, of life or of death. The American ideal is goodness and life that shows lovingkindness and civility, but is not afraid to stand strong against unrighteousness. It's all about the heart. Let us pray a Psalm 51:10 prayer for all our countrymen that the Lord create in them, in all of us, "a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within" us.

Texas Woman’s Gospel Performance at Harvey Shelter Goes Viral

A Texas woman’s gospel performance inside a shelter for Tropical Storm Harvey evacuees has gone viral after the impromptu performance lifted the spirits of people stranded away from home.

Although it is difficult to understand the full extent of damage from the monster storm until flood waters fully recede, at least 10,000 people have been rescued, more than 30,000 are in shelters and 20 people are reported dead.

Part of the 21-minute long performance was posted on Facebook by Joni Villemez-Comeaux, a volunteer at the Lone Star Convention and Expo Center north of Houston in Conroe. The video has been viewed over seven million times.

Victoria White, who works as an admissions counselor at Sam Houston State University, belted out songs with a few other evacuees, at one point singing “Spirit Break Out,” which was widely shared on social media. by Lewis Morris:  Kim Jung Un continues to stir up trouble in Asia and danger for the entire world. The attention-starved North Korean dictator fired off another missile, sending this one over northern Japan and warning that it was a “meaningful prelude to containing Guam.”
          Japanese were startled by the launch and were sent running for cover by air raid sirens. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Donald Trump both condemned the action. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called upon the Security Council to take strong action. What that might look like is still unknown, though the UNSC did issue a condemnation of North Korea’s “outrageous” launch.
          The Security Council heaped sanctions on North Korea already for its missile launches earlier this month. Keeping China on board for tougher measures will be vital, as Kim’s fellow communists are pretty much the only friends he has — well, besides the Iranian mullahs.
          PJ Media’s Claudia Rosett recaps the history briefly: “North Korea launched a ballistic missile over Japan on Tuesday, an act that all by itself qualifies as a stunning provocation. This followed a bout of North Korean threats earlier this month to girdle Guam with missile strikes. Those threats followed North Korea’s successful tests last month of two intercontinental ballistic missiles. Those tests followed an 11-year span from 2006-2016 in which North Korea conducted five nuclear tests, prepared to conduct a sixth — which could come anytime now — and in 2010 unveiled a uranium-enrichment program to complement its production of plutonium for bomb fuel.”
          Some have speculated that Kim is trying to push the U.S. and its allies to sit down for negotiations, though he almost certainly won’t come to the table without first sufficiently demonstrating his capability of striking the U.S. mainland. It’s hard to see anything coming of negotiations, though — at least not anything better than has come out of a quarter century of such dialogue. Trump has vowed to keep North Korea from developing long-range nuclear capability. And Kim has sworn he won’t give up his nuclear program. Beyond that, what else is there left to discuss?
          We’ve been to this rodeo many times. The stakes are higher now, though, with North Korea’s growing nuclear capability. As The Wall Street Journal observes, “The intermediate-range missile test will further roil the politics of security in Northeast Asia and is another prod toward Japan acquiring its own nuclear deterrent.” Trump recognizes that, but what’s to be done about it?
          Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was short-sighted enough to say just days before this latest launch that we were actually making progress with North Korea. “I am pleased to see that the regime in Pyongyang has certainly demonstrated some level of restraint that we’ve not seen in the past,” he said last week. “We hope that this is the beginning of this signal that we’ve been looking for that they are ready to restrain their level of tensions, they’re ready to restrain their provocative acts, and that perhaps we are seeing our pathway to sometime in the near future having some dialogue.” His boss was little better. Trump declared last week that Kim was “starting to respect” the U.S.
          Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon went so far as to say there is no military solution to the problem in North Korea because of the inevitable damage to Seoul, South Korea, just 30 miles from the border. Bannon may be right that it’s at least a costly option, but it’s one of those things an administration shouldn’t say out loud.
          Trump has noted that “all options” remain on the table, and in order for that threat to deter Kim, he has to believe it. Force is the only language dictators understand. A display of power in Asia will let North Korea know that we will protect our allies. Trump standing side by side with South Korea and Japan will also demonstrate that we will protect our allies. After eight years of “leading from behind” and apologizing for American greatness, the international community needs to be reminded that we will not tolerate acts of aggression.  ~The Patriot Post

by Thomas Gallatin:  Several Ivy League professors from the universities of Harvard, Princeton and Yale sent out a letter of advice to all incoming college students this week. Their message: “Think for yourself.” In the letter they challenge students to avoid “the vice of conformism” and to avoid the trap of “what John Stuart Mill called ‘the tyranny of public opinion.’”
          Over the years, the once-high ideal of America’s institutions of higher learning being bastions of tolerance for the expression of freedom in thought and speech has eroded into them being little more than “safe space” echo chambers of leftist ideology and propaganda. In the past couple of years in particular Americans have witnessed various university and college campuses produce some of the most intolerant policies, voices and behaviors. The list includes the banning of various religious and social groups based on their supposed “bigoted” (non-leftist) ideology, the dis-invitation of various conservative speakers and the creation of “safe spaces” designed to prohibit and limit the freedom of speech in public places on campus. And finally, the growth of leftist social justice warriors who have advocated and engaged in violence in places like UC Berkeley and Middlebury, and most recently the takeover of Evergreen State College by a mob of these leftist SJW students.
          The sad thing is that only 15 professors signed the letter. This letter should have garnered near universal support from Ivy League faculty. When concerns over offending another individual’s feelings prohibit someone, specifically one whose career is based on educating and challenging others to learn about and engage new ideas or concepts, from honestly expressing their knowledge and thoughtful opinions without fear of reprisal, we have a problem. The concept that equates unpopular speech to literal violence against individuals with opposing views is a fallacy that has unfortunately gone unchallenged by many on the Left.
          Leftists’ argument for engaging in physical violence against others (like “punching a Nazi”) because they find their views repugnant or bigoted is the antithesis of tolerance and objective reasoning. Just yesterday a visiting assistant professor at the University of Tampa was fired for tweeting that he believed residents of Texas suffering from Hurricane Harvey were getting what they deserved because they voted for Donald Trump. His tweet read, “I don’t believe in instant karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas. Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn’t care about them.” It is this type of what might be best described as anti-logic that elevates emotion over and against rational thought. It seeks to limit the freedom of speech because it simply cannot objectively justify the irrational over the rational. It cannot logically support the anti-scientific over the scientific and still refer to it as “science.”
          Popular opinion does not create or establish truth; it simply sets cultural precedent that should never be immune from challenge. Thankfully, at least 15 professors are brave enough to point out this reality to incoming college students. We hope many more embrace this truth.  ~The Patriot Post

That was February 1st, 2017.

Since then, ANTIFA has revisited Berkeley on March 4th 2017, in a supposed “protest” against President Donald Trump…on April 15th 2017, ANTIFA struck at Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park in Berkeley at yet another pro-Trump rally but this was the first time they were billed as “counter protesters” by the liberal mainstream media.

Unsung Heroes: The Cajun Navy

Wrapping up a long day day, thanking our awesome dev team:

Just so you know, we got a ticket, this morning, you might find interesting. The ticket came in as an extreme emergency from a mother. There was a 19 year old man that needed immediate rescue. He was restricted to his bed, on a ventilator, with only a couple minutes of gas left in their (oxygen) generator.

Emergency 911 refused to go out and help him, so our dispatcher got into our main channel on Zello and starting asking for help. Within seconds, someone on the channel responded, that he would find help. Within two minutes, the other guy was able to find a citizen with a private helicopter and a medic to go out there and try to rescue this young man.

As the helicopter touched down, sprinting into the house, the medic found a hysterical, screaming mother, watching her suffocating son dying in front of her eyes, because the generator had run out of gas shortly before.

Tonight, the man on the main Cajun Navy channel shared his secret as to how he was able to recruit a helicopter, in a matter of seconds. He simply called every phone number around the Lake Charles airport, asking if they had a helicopter. After about the third try, he found a man who said, “Yes, I have a bird, a medic and enough room. I’ll go get him.”

We later received a phone call from the mother, sobbing and in tears, that this young man was transported to the hospital, placed in the ICU and is in stable condition, tonight. She thanked the Cajun Navy for saving her son’s life, when nobody else, even 911, could or would respond.

This young man is alive, tonight, because os Ticket and the other devs in this team gave us the ability to field and respond to his mother’s request for help. You guys at os Ticket should know, even though you don’t have a single boat in the water and you’re in Alexandria, north of Ville Platte, the unofficial end of Cajun Country, you and the other devs, @fedaykin422, @alex are still a vital part of the Cajun Navy. Also I was involved in this call as medical assistance from *C.H.I.N.D.

I lost contact last night with a family of 5 in Port Arthur with a newborn. They put the baby in basket on the shelf.

Later, all 5 adults are confirmed dead. The baby survived.

"Today, during a swift water rescue, one boat of two swift water trained rescue volunteers capsized.

Both volunteers have been found and are no longer with us. Please say a prayer for these two Search and Rescue volunteers and their families.

It wasn’t for nothing, they were saving lives at the risk of their own. All teams understand the inherent risk involved. This shows that it’s truly a dangerous situation and that brave men and women are willing (and VOLUNTEERING) to risk their own lives, vehicles, and boats in order to save others. When the police department chaplain announced himself over the radio, it became a very heavy moment. It’s a really difficult call to listen to knowing that it’s out of your hands while bowing your head for the chaplain’s prayer followed by a moment of silence."

          A president’s true effect on his country can’t be fully and accurately assessed until some time after his term ends. But looking at Donald Trump’s record so far indicates his effect will be almost 100% negative — at least if you believe obnoxiously biased media coverage and the estimates of his Democrat and leftist enemies.
          Sure, he’s been in office for only seven months, but all that really means is that his negative record is ultimately going to be absolutely YUGE and unparalleled! Right? Right? How could so many American voters have been so wrong last November?
          Trump is a man who has become famous only because his father gave him money, right? Daddy, we are told, provided gifts of $1 million or maybe $100 million. Detractors say that’s why he’s now worth $3.5 billion, according to Forbes, only 35 times the highest reported level of help of $100 million. What’s special about that? Surely any or all of the rest of us could have done that well?
          Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) saw this coming and wisely wanted to save the country all this pain by impeaching Trump before he was even sworn in as president. Perhaps she was in such a hurry because she wanted get it done before her trial for ethics violations begins. And some of her patriotic Democrat comrades are still working toward that end. Bless their hearts!
          And CNN “reporter” Jim Acosta — who has benefitted from his own journalistic failures since Trump made him famous by noticing and publicizing them — acted on an assumption. Immediately upon hearing the dire predictions of catastrophe of Hurricane Harvey advancing on the Texas coast, Acosta apparently assumed Trump was watching baseball rather than acting in advance of the storm to deal with the developing crisis. He tweeted at Trump with the question, “What is your administration doing about the hurricane to keep Texans safe?” By then, Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had already talked by phone and the federal government was already acting, and Abbott has praised the federal response. Oops!
          No doubt Al Gore will soon publish another book or make another movie with withering criticism of Donald’s exit from the Paris Climate Accord, that “doctrine with no teeth,” which Gore will swear could have turned the storm to the south, sparing America altogether.
          Sure, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a hero to many Arizonans for his unwavering enforcement of federal immigration laws the federal government refused to enforce. The feds’ abdication meant great harm and discomfort to the people of Sen. RINO-John McCain’s home state. But how could Donald dare to pardon the man before he was even sentenced for the misdemeanor charges he was found guilty of — by a judge, not a jury — and robbing that judge of the pleasure of punishing a man she convicted during a witch hunt?
          Shouldn’t a president’s powers of pardon and commutation be reserved for people convicted of serious federal crimes, as Bill liar-Clinton did on his last day in office for 140 such criminals, some of whom were his relatives and friends? Or, for releasing 1,500 federal prisoners and Gitmo detainees, as Barack liar-nObama did over eight years?
          Even some so-called Republicans, like the aforementioned RINO-John McCain, are critical of Trump. RINO-McCain said the timing was bad and especially so because “Mr. Arpaio has shown no remorse for” doing the job the federal government refused to do to protect Sen. RINO-McCain’s Arizona constituents.
          With these acts Trump has joined the ranks of previous presidents, doing things their enemies dislike. Remember liar-nObama’s “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” bragging on the “Affordable” Care Act, or “The police acted stupidly” trying to protect personal property, or when he curtsied to Muslim leaders upon meeting them?
          Many people do not like Donald Trump, a condition he readily contributes to by some actions, but also because he doesn’t do things the way they expect a president to do them. However, being different isn’t necessarily being wrong. Remember, in 1532 it was a certainty that the Earth was the center of all things. But Nicholaus Copernicus revived an ancient theory saying the sun was actually the center and Earth revolved around it. According to the existing beliefs, he was wrong. But he wasn’t.
          Many in the media and the public take Trump’s words literally without thinking about what he was trying to communicate. Yes, that may be hard work, but reporting accurately is also hard work, and reporters and talkingheads need to step up their game. Of course, Trump should do a better job of ensuring his words convey their intended meaning; but the media must remember that their job is to convey the true message, the intended message, and leave their petty, adolescent feelings aside.
          Reporters and media outlets are charged with accurately, objectively and fairly informing the public. Report what happens, good, bad and ugly, and let the people decide how to respond. Americans don’t need reporters to tell them what to think.

 The Need to Define 'Winning' in Afghanistan 
by Todd Johnson:  Last week, in a packed Conmy Hall at Joint Base Myer-Henderson, President Donald Trump made his long-awaited announcement about the United States’ future role in Afghanistan.
          After hearing Trump’s remarks, we’re heartened by a few of his comments. First, it was good to finally hear Trump acknowledge that making life and death decisions about national security issues as president is a lot different than following his instincts as a private citizen. While some may see this as a low bar to clear, it is still significant to note because it shows Trump publicly acknowledging the gravity of the office he holds.
          Second, he made a clear distinction about separating his administration from his predecessor when he articulated that his national security team will be focused on implementing a conditions-based approach rather than a strict timeline. This significant deviation from the previous administration is a positive first step in sending a message to the Afghan government, as well as to the governments of Pakistan, Iran and Russia, that America is committed to fighting the Taliban and al-Qaida, now and in the future.
          However, after ruminating on his speech the next day and examining the transcripts, we recalled the lyrics to “We Won’t Get Fooled Again,” penned by Pete Townshend of The Who. The last two lines of that song, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” perfectly encapsulates Trump’s failure, much like Barack liar-nObama, to set the strategic context of America’s future involvement in Afghanistan.
          As we wrote a few weeks ago, the purpose of war is to serve national-interest objectives and Trump failed to articulate that in his speech. He said, “Our troops will fight to win. We will fight to win.” But what does that mean?
          Many years ago, the famed military theorist Carl von Clausewitz wrote, “We see, therefore, that war is not merely an act of policy but a true political instrument, a continuation of political intercourse carried on with other means.” In other words, wars are meant to further political goals, not just kill bad guys.
          When President Trump says we aren’t nation-building, he is missing the point of our presence in the region. In order for any country to function, it must have institutions that cater to the needs of the populace. The reason why any state becomes a safe haven for terrorists, from Somalia to Yemen to Afghanistan, is because of the central government’s inability to serve the people. Like it or not, by committing more American troops to Afghanistan, Trump is implicitly nation-building.
          Which made Trump’s conspicuous omission in his speech about the role of his State Department in Afghanistan more troubling. While he did state, “A fundamental pillar of our new strategy is the integration of all instruments of American power: diplomatic, economic and military,” he never elaborated about how his administration will fuse these efforts into one cohesive strategy.
          And that is a major problem with Trump’s speech, and by extension, his policy for the region. There are no clear-cut objectives. That ambiguity may serve to keep jihadis off balance, but it doesn’t help our nation commit to win.
          While Trump talks about “winning,” his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, is saying that U.S. efforts are “intended to put pressure on the Taliban to have the Taliban understand you will not win a battlefield victory.” Yet he added, “We may not win one, but neither will you.” Talk about mixed messages.
          If President Trump wants to be serious about American efforts in Afghanistan and South Asia, he needs to oversee a series of measures that should be a combination of pragmatism and resolve.
          He and his team need to make a case about why we need to stay involved in the region. They need to explain to the American people, and the rest of the world, why the United States is committed to this fight and why it’s in our best interests to continue pouring blood and treasure into this part of the world.
          As America begins its 16th year of war in Afghanistan this fall, it’s time to reflect upon what has been accomplished and what still needs to be achieved. President Trump has the chance to make a difference but only time will tell if he is serious about committing the vast resources and leadership needed to achieve success on the ground.  ~The Patriot Post

          However, after ruminating on his speech the next day and examining the transcripts, we recalled the lyrics to “We Won’t Get Fooled Again,” penned by Pete Townshend of The Who. The last two lines of that song, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” perfectly encapsulates Trump’s failure, much like Barack liar-nObama, to set the strategic context of America’s future involvement in Afghanistan.
          As we wrote a few weeks ago, the purpose of war is to serve national-interest objectives and Trump failed to articulate that in his speech. He said, “Our troops will fight to win. We will fight to win.” But what does that mean?
          Many years ago, the famed military theorist Carl von Clausewitz wrote, “We see, therefore, that war is not merely an act of policy but a true political instrument, a continuation of political intercourse carried on with other means.” In other words, wars are meant to further political goals, not just kill bad guys.
          When President Trump says we aren’t nation-building, he is missing the point of our presence in the region. In order for any country to function, it must have institutions that cater to the needs of the populace. The reason why any state becomes a safe haven for terrorists, from Somalia to Yemen to Afghanistan, is because of the central government’s inability to serve the people. Like it or not, by committing more American troops to Afghanistan, Trump is implicitly nation-building.
          Which made Trump’s conspicuous omission in his speech about the role of his State Department in Afghanistan more troubling. While he did state, “A fundamental pillar of our new strategy is the integration of all instruments of American power: diplomatic, economic and military,” he never elaborated about how his administration will fuse these efforts into one cohesive strategy.
          And that is a major problem with Trump’s speech, and by extension, his policy for the region. There are no clear-cut objectives. That ambiguity may serve to keep jihadis off balance, but it doesn’t help our nation commit to win.
          While Trump talks about “winning,” his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, is saying that U.S. efforts are “intended to put pressure on the Taliban to have the Taliban understand you will not win a battlefield victory.” Yet he added, “We may not win one, but neither will you.” Talk about mixed messages.
          If President Trump wants to be serious about American efforts in Afghanistan and South Asia, he needs to oversee a series of measures that should be a combination of pragmatism and resolve.
          He and his team need to make a case about why we need to stay involved in the region. They need to explain to the American people, and the rest of the world, why the United States is committed to this fight and why it’s in our best interests to continue pouring blood and treasure into this part of the world.
          As America begins its 16th year of war in Afghanistan this fall, it’s time to reflect upon what has been accomplished and what still needs to be achieved. President Trump has the chance to make a difference but only time will tell if he is serious about committing the vast resources and leadership needed to achieve success on the ground.  ~The Patriot Post

the discredited document. The Senate Judiciary Committee has sent repeated requests that the FBI make two of its top agents available for questioning on matters regarding the dossier. The FBI has so far refused. The question Grassley wants answered is whether the FBI used the dubious dossier as a pretext to gain FISA approval for surveillance of Trump campaign personnel.

Vote for one, and there’s a good chance you’ll be extremely disappointed.  You might even find yourself floating your kids down the road in a refrigerator like a guy in Houston did back in 2016, one year before Hurricane Harvey.

Back then, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner found himself standing in hot water with residents in an area of Houston prone to flooding who expected more from their mayor. One resident said, “We’re just frustrated. There was no help for us,” KHOU-TV News reported.

What’s happening in Houston now feels like it’s 2005 all over again. Former Democrat mayor, Ray Nagin discouraged New Orleans residents from evacuating like Mayor Turner who also encouraged Houston residents to stay put. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, offered other advice: “Even if an evacuation order hasn’t been issued by your local official, if you’re in an area between Corpus Christi and Houston, you need to strongly consider evacuating.”

So, who is to blame for people stranded on rooftops?

While everyone wants to blame it on President Trump, as I’ve written before, the government is not our savior, so people need to get over the blame game and take care of themselves if they are physically and mentally able.

Those who don’t, join the rank of perpetual victims when they refuse to acknowledge that they are able, with God’s help, to take control over the rising water of their circumstances. Instead, they choose to assume zero responsibility for their situation and sit on the rooftop of their despair waiting for their government “savior” to rescue them. But it rarely does.

It is a lie to believe every malady known to man has absolutely nothing to do with poor choices, bad judgment or weak character. We cannot control nature, but we can make wise choices in the face of nature’s onslaught.

Mark my words, the left-leaning media will do their best to blame everything on President Trump the same way they blamed Bush for Katrina. Bush cut his vacation short to do a flyover of New Orleans, yet was accused of being a racist by those seeking to paint a sitting Republican president in the worst possible light.

Of course, they looked the other way in 2016 when former President liar-nObama continued to play golf at Martha’s Vineyard as if nothing were happening during the Baton Rouge flooding.

Don’t be surprised if NBC News’ Brian Williams shows up in Houston like he did in New Orleans. Williams and NBC News were awarded the Peabody award for misreporting un-facts about un-events the Washington Post said Williams perhaps “misremembered” the same way he misremembered his helicopter misadventure in Iraq. Williams was eventually demoted for the kind of tale telling one would expect to hear while eating smores around a campfire at Lake Wobegon.

Surely, the media will go fishing in the floods for a million ways to blame Trump, it is heartwarming to know that during a devastating time such as this we have a president who cares.

liar-nObama found time to pull away from Martha’s Vineyard to attend a posh liar-Hillary fundraiser, but was too busy to be comforter-in-chief in Baton Rouge. liar-nObama was just smoke-and-mirrors. As a senator, he condemned Bush as the “president who only saw the people from the window of an airplane instead of down here on the ground to provide comfort and aid…”

At least Bush showed up. And Trump too, wisely planning to visit locations hit by Harvey, while judiciously avoiding areas where his presence could interrupt evacuations or emergency response.

Unlike the guy whom leftists believed walked on water and who promised on his watch the planet would heal and the waters would recede. Looking at Houston right now, it obviously didn’t.

{townhall.com} ~ In the course of one short week, America witnessed an extremely unique solar eclipse and then watched the state of Texas get hit with a catastrophic hurricane. Is God trying to get our attention, or is it foolish and even dangerous to speculate like this?

On the one hand, we have not had a similar eclipse in America since 1776, as it’s the first total eclipse visible only in the USA since the year of our founding. That is certainly striking.

And, when the path of the next solar eclipse, which is expected in 2024, is charted on a map, it intersects with this year’s eclipse in the form of a giant X over the nation. That is also quite striking.

There are other, interesting facts connected to the August 21 eclipse, and an Orthodox rabbi in Israel has pointed out in rabbinic literature, eclipses were signs of judgment (see Sukkah 29a in the Babylonian Talmud).

Not only so, but the eclipse came at a dark time in our nation’s history, with deepening divisions on every front.

Could it be that God was speaking to us through this eclipse? Surely, if this took place in biblical times it would have been taken as a divine sign. Should we take it as one today?

Perhaps, but we need to tread carefully here, since it’s just as wrong to speak for God when He’s not speaking as it is to miss His voice when He does speak.

When it comes to the eclipse, those who witnessed it around the country had a sense of awe and wonder, not a sense of dread and fear. And, for the most part, those who believe that God created the universe sensed the majesty of the Creator in the eclipse more than a sign of impending judgment.

I’m not saying that the solar eclipse was not a divine warning sign. I’m simply saying that we need a lot more evidence, accompanied with a clear prophetic warning, before we make a solemn pronouncement.

When it comes to hurricanes, we need to be even more careful before making divine pronouncements, as tempting as it can be to do so.

For example, it was striking that Hurricane Katrina wiped out the Southern Decadence, gay pride event in New Orleans, a gay pride event worthy of its name. Many Christians felt it was a clearly an act of divine judgment.

And there were some who claimed that Katrina was a judgment on America for pressuring Israel to get out of Gaza, resulting in the forced and painful resettling of thousands of Jews. Similarly, Katrina displaced thousands of Americans who now became refugees in other states.

But are we prepared to look into the eyes of the families who lost loved ones in Katrina, some of whom were devout believers, and tell them their loved ones were struck down in an act of divine judgment because of our treatment of Israel?

Right now, the city of Houston is bearing much of the brunt of Hurricane Harvey. Yet, from a Christian perspective, Houston is one of the few cities that has stood bravely against the rising tide of LGBT activism. Why would God single out Houston for judgment?

Read the account of Christian apologist Jeremiah Johnston, a husband and father of five including 13-month-old triplets, as he describes what it’s like to be living in Houston right now. Are you willing to tell him along with the families of the bereaved that this hurricane is divine judgment?

Again, had we been living in biblical times, we would have recognized a hurricane like this as a sign of divine judgment, repenting of our sins and asking for mercy. And certainly, there’s no way that we could view something like Hurricane Harvey as a blessing from God. Also, events like this remind us of our fragility and of God’s power, which often lead us to prayer.

But we must be very careful before we make divine pronouncements about hurricanes and other natural disasters, as if they were specific acts of divine judgment against specific sets of sinners.

I once polled my radio audience about hurricanes, asking whether they were acts of divine judgment.

One caller asked, “If that’s the case, why don’t the hurricanes wipe out churches first, since there’s so much sin in our midst?”

Another caller said, “If God wanted to get our attention, why not send a hurricane to a part of the country that normally doesn’t get hurricanes? Or why not send it at a time of the year when hurricanes are rare?” This tornado would seem to fit the description of an unusual event, pointing to divine judgment.

I believe these are fair questions and observations, reminding us that we need to be careful before making divine pronouncements.

Are you 100 percent sure that the eclipse and hurricane are acts of divine judgment? If not, perhaps you should think and pray more before posting and speaking? On the other hand, are you 100 percent sure that they are not acts of judgment? If so, perhaps you should think and pray more before attacking those with whom you differ?

Either way, I hope we can we agree on this: America needs the Lord right now, and we should join together in asking God to have mercy on our nation, especially on those suffering effects of Hurricane Harvey today.

Seattle Times  Rome is looking into the confiscated buildings after police officers were criticized last week for using water cannons against phony Muslim asylum-seekers. The Muslim freeloaders had camped out on a central piazza after being evicted from a building they had illegally occupied since 2013.

Raggi added that the city government was now looking into the possibility of housing the thousands of African scroungers — who demand food, housing and welfare payments — in buildings confiscated from criminal cartels such as the Mafia. Rome authorities are looking into whether buildings confiscated from the mafia can be used to house the illegal Muslim squatters, a move that comes after police were criticized for the violent clashes that erupted as they tried to evacuate a building occupied by invaders.

Raggi defended the police action Tuesday and said the city wouldn’t tolerate illegal squatters. She estimated that squatters had occupied about 100 buildings around the capital. Raggi said she had tried to improve the situation, but her year-old administration has been unable to make good on many campaign pledges to fix Rome’s worsening public services, from garbage pileups to potholes.

Police said they intervened because of intelligence that the Africans planned to use gas canisters and Molotov cocktails after they occupied the square in defiance of an order to leave an office building in which they had been squatting for 5 years. 

Most of the Muslim squatters had actually been granted “asylum” by the Italian government. However, they had refused to accept the accommodation offered to them by the city, preferring instead to stay in their self-created slums.

According to an officer on the scene, someone started to write the words “Islamic State will rema[in],” in black spray paint on a wall outside the church.

It is reprehensible when any place of worship is vandalized; this is the second such incident recently in Ontario. A Burlington Church sustained “heavy damages” from a fire only two weeks ago, and “ISIS” was spray-painted on the building.

There should be a loud outcry in Canada over these two acts against Christian churches in such close proximity, both of which were marked with Islamic State graffiti.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, spoke out after a mosque fire in Ontario last year, and that is good. Unfortunately, no such statement has come from Trudeau or his government regarding the church  fire or the Islamic State graffiti. The silence is deafening and sends a loud message. Intolerance apparently is recognized only in one direction.

Linda Sarsour seems unable to pass up any opportunity to make a quick buck, even at the expense of vulnerable Americans. Her latest target? Caring people all across the country who are looking for ways to help the hundreds of thousands of Texans who have lost everything as the result of Hurricane Harvey.

Sarsour recently requested donations for the Harvey Hurricane Relief Fund, which, on its face, sounds innocuous enough. But it turns out that this fund is, in fact, a thinly veiled front for leftist community organizing. From the fund’s website:

Together we will organize and advocate for our devastated communities, shining a spotlight on inequalities that emerge in the restoration of lives, livelihoods, and homes, amplifying the needs of hard-hit communities, and providing legal assistance for residents wrongfully denied government support.

This is pure political activism, not a charitable quest to assist hurricane victims as they rebuild their lives. It’ll reroute the money not to actual charities such as the Texas Diaper Bank or the Houston Food Bank, but instead to the Texas Organizing Project Education Fund, a nonprofit that advances racial and economic justice through community and electoral organizing.” On its Facebook page, the Project announced that all donations received “will only be used to organize in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.”

In other words, not one cent of this money will be donated to people who have lost their cars, possessions, and even their entire homes. Instead it’ll be poured straight into the pockets of activists such as Sarsour as they continue their political posturing, dividing the country over race and “inequality” in the wake of Harvey’s devastation rather than focusing on the nonpartisan goal of helping Texans restore their community.

This week, Sarsour has also actively discouraged people from donating to the Red Cross, suggesting instead that they contribute to sundry political-activist organizations. Sarsour has already shown her willingness to use disunity to turn a profit. Now we know she’s willing to exploit disaster in the same way.

The Roe v. Wade decision struck down dozens of state abortion laws when I was a college freshman. It was a 7-2 decision that prevailed only with the help of three Republicans appointed to the Supreme Court by Richard Nixon, including Chief Justice Warren Burger. Otherwise the Texas abortion statute would have been upheld by a 5-4 prolife decision, and the other states would have been allowed to make their own abortion laws instead of obeying the Supreme Court’s abortion law.

Roe’s guardians against reversal over the ensuing decades were two Justices (Anthony Kennedy and Sandra Day O’Connor) appointed by Ronald Reagan and one (David Souter) appointed by George H.W. Bush. Pro-abortion Democrats on the Court never broke a sweat.

I would have been thrilled to see the Constitution amended to protect unborn life, but it hasn’t happened in 44 years and that was more than 61 million dead babies ago. Are we willing to let another 61 million die before we end legalized baby-killing in America?

“We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins,” wrote Justice Harry Blackmun on behalf of his colleagues in the Court’s majority. And they didn’t. He wrote that “the judiciary, at this point [1973] in the development of man’s knowledge, is not in a position to speculate as to the answer.”

And yet they admitted elsewhere in the same decision that “if this suggestion of personhood is established, [Roe’s] case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [14th] Amendment.” That is the Amendment that forbids states to deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law.

Who can legally establish the personhood of unborn children, then, if not the Supreme Court? Well, Section 5 of the 14th Amendment says Congress has the “power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this [14th Amendment] article.” Those provisions include, in Section 1, the guarantees of due process and equal protection of the laws to “any person.”

The United States Congress, therefore, by a simple majority of both chambers, may establish the personhood of an unborn child. It’s not necessary to amend the Constitution. It’s not necessary to overturn Roe v. Wade. It’s only necessary to take the Roe majority at its word, and establish the personhood of unborn children – legislatively – from conception. Then enforce the 14th Amendment guarantees of due process and equal protection.

S. 231, the Life at Conception Act of 2017, was introduced in January by Sen. Rand Paul. It declares “that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual comes into being.”

If you have a Senator – Republican or Democrat – who claims to be prolife but isn’t on the list of 11 co-sponsors (Google it), you might have a fake pro-lifer on your hands. This is the time of year when they’re going home and meeting the folks. Ask them if they’re fake. Maybe they’re not, in which case – what are they waiting for?

The bill has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Its Republican members include Orrin Hatch of Utah, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John Cornyn of Texas, Mike Lee of Utah, Ted Cruz of Texas, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Jeff Flake of Arizona. None are co-sponsors of S. 231. What are their intentions?

Alexander Mooney (R-West Virginia) introduced an equivalent bill in the House of Representatives, H.R. 681, “to implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person.” It declares that the right to life is vested in each human being.

H.R. 681 defines “human person” and “human being” as “each and every member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.”

The House bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee, and from there to the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) is chairman of that subcommittee. Four other Republicans are members: Ron DeSantis of Florida, Trent Franks of Arizona, Karen Handel of Georgia and Louie Gohmert of Texas. King, Franks and Gohmert are listed as H.R. 681 co-sponsors. This is a solidly prolife subcommittee. When are we going to see some movement on H.R. 681?

I see my own Congressman’s name listed as an H.R. 681 co-sponsor. Now I wish he would have a talk with my two invisible prolife Senators.

Ever wonder why you have less money to spend? That it seems like every time you go to the grocery store, you get a whole lot less for a whole lot more? Part of the reason is inflation. The way the government accounts for inflation these days kind of fudges the numbers-food and gasoline don't count in the same figures anymore. Convenient right? But on the other side of the equation, it may seem like you're paying more for essentials because you don't have as much available cash to spend. According to this week's report by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, you are paying more in taxes than you are for food. In fact, since 2013, you have seen an average increase of 41.13% in taxes.
 
The report talks about spending in terms of "consumer units," which means families. The average American family's food expenditures increased by $601 from $6,602 in 2013 to $7,203 in 2016. Food expenditures were about 14% of the average American's income. The BLS's Average Annual Expenditures for American Consumer Units report indicates that the average American family paid $7,432 in taxes in 2013 compared with taxes of $10,489 in 2016, an increase of $3,057 or 41.13%. It is no wonder why most of us are feeling "pinched" because we are actually in a tax vice that is squeezing tighter each year. The government has become a leviathan that wields tremendous and absolute power over the people.
 
In March 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act, a tax to be levied on documents from legal papers to newspapers to playing cards, ranging from a penny to about a dollar depending on the number of pages. By November 1, 1765, the day the Stamp Act was to officially go into effect, PBS says: "there was not a single stamp commissioner left in the colonies to collect the tax." They were tarred and feathered and ran out of town. This unfair taxation of a penny-a penny--gave impetus to the American Revolution. The Founders believed that the government was not to intrude into people's lives beyond providing safety and security--the true meaning of providing for the general welfare--for the people.
 
There are certain Biblical principles being violated by such taxation. First and foremost, Exodus 20:3 says, " Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Government is not God. In America, we have a choice in how we are governed. We can vote. Government should never be allowed to stand with the life or death power of a god-either over our ability to have food or in our health care decisions. Exodus 20:17 says, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's." As well, Exodus 20:15 says, "Thou shalt not steal." A 41% increase in taxes over four years seems a lot like coveting and stealing to me.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs apparently approved the posting of a newsletter around the campus that calls for the banning of U.S. military veterans from attending four-year colleges and universities . . .

Blogger Paul J. O’Leary, an Army and law enforcement veteran responded to the newsletter on Friday. In a lengthy post titled “An Open Letter to a UCCS Student,” he wrote, in part:

Isn’t it wonderful that we live in a country where all of us are free to express our opinions in a public forum? Where we are all free to pursue educational excellence? […]

Why do you feel it is acceptable to minimize the safety and well-being of those who attend trade schools? Are you assuming there are no LGBTQQIP2SAA students going to trade schools?
