And here we go folks…the federal government, under the watchful eye of the Obama regime, will now boldly go where they shouldn’t…into local municipal police departments and the tactic being employed will surely lead to grabbing power away from local law enforcement in exactly the same way the feds managed to grab land from the states as outlined in our ‘Land Grab’ series.

Obama is set to award some $20 million dollars in federal grants to local police departments for the purpose of buying body cams for officers and that’s just the beginning. The total package of this ‘gift’ to local law enforcement is $75 million dollars and it seems to have the backing of Congress.

SHOULD local law enforcement officers be outfitted with body cams? Yes.

Should they be glad-handing to the federal government for the funds?

The long, cold winter covered much of Lake Michigan with sheets of ice, but now that the ice has retreated the water is remarkably clear. (The cold held back seasonal algae blooms that make the water murky in warmer weather.) As a result, the many shipwrecks that dot the floor of the second largest of the Great Lakes are visible through the blue waters. NPR reports: “Photos from the flight out of the Coast Guard’s Traverse City, Mich., air station show a variety of ships resting on the lake bottom, including the James McBride, a 121-foot brig that sank in 1857. … ‘An estimated 6,000 vessels were lost on the Great Lakes with approximately 1,500 of these ships located in Michigan waters,’ according to the state Department of Environmental Quality, which calls the wrecks ‘irreplaceable records of our cultural history.’”  -Fox News

 First Quarter GDP Is a Harsh Reality Check  
Other than the first quarter, last year was a better year for the economy. After contracting 2.1% to start off 2014, GDP jumped to 4.6% in the second quarter and 5% in the third quarter before slipping to 2.2% to round out the year. So, how's 2015 looking so far? Well, chilly — literally, according to Democrats. TheCommerce Department released initial numbers for the first quarter of 2015, and, at a sluggish 0.2%, GDP once again tempered America's level of economic enthusiasm. And the "worse-than-expected" downtrend is inevitably being blamed on winter weather woes. Jason Furman, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said this latest estimate "was likely affected by notably harsh winter weather" — interesting considering we're supposedly coming off the warmest year on record and had a record warm start to 2015. It's also the same recycled excuse they used last year.
          Moreover, as Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal reminds us, revisions knocked last year's initial first quarter growth down by a staggering two percentage points — from 0.1% to -2.1%. Is a repeat in the offing? Yesterday's report continues a familiar trend under the nObama recovery — a roller coaster ride that features some signs of life along with harsh reality checks.  Bernie Sanders Challenges Clinton for Democrat Nomination  
At least the Democrat presidential primary got interesting. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the politician who described himself as a "democratic socialist" and who was described by the New York Times as an adherent to "that old-time religion" of populism, announced he is campaigning to win the Democrat Party's nomination as its presidential candidate. The politician that was once too far to the Left for the Democrat Party told the Associated Press, "People should not underestimate me. I've run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country." Right out of the gate, Sanders challenged Hilly Clinton's succession to the throne by bringing the progressive rhetoric that splits rich versus poor and capitalizes on income inequality. "What we have seen is that while the average person is working longer hours for lower wages," Sanders said, "we have seen a huge increase in income and wealth inequality, which is now reaching obscene levels." Between the two candidates, Clinton still seems the greater threat. Sanders appears more harmless than calculating, and a Sanders nomination will pull the Democrat Party further from middle America.  -The Patriot Post

 Did Freddie Gray Try to Injure Himself in the Police Van?  
If true, the death of Freddie Gray may not have anything to do with police brutality and more to do with an irrational man bent on self-harm. This in from The Washington Post: "A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray 'banging against the walls' of the vehicle and believed that he 'was intentionally trying to injure himself,' according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post." This story has the ring of truthiness about it, but is it really? Jazz Shaw writes at Hot Air that the prisoner could be an unreliable witness — similar to the witnesses that said Michael Brown had his hands up. Furthermore, Investigative Reporter at Baltimore's NBC affiliate TV station Jayne Miller said the Post's account contradicts what the Baltimore Police Commissioner said a week ago. At the time, he said the prisoner described Gray as "mostly quiet." The timeline is still being reconstructed. When we do get the complete and truthful story, what will happen if the rioters, who already destroyed much of Baltimore, do not get the conclusion for which they demanded?  -The Patriot Post

 No, Riots Are Not a 'Legitimate Political Strategy'  
Reading the liberal media, you'd think the Baltimore rioters are the reincarnation of Lexington and Concord's minutemen, bravely facing tyrants to defend their freedom. Well, Paul Revere might disagree. Somehow, ruining businesses and running off with condoms doesn't quite equate to Patrick Henry's speech "Give me Liberty or give me death." But the Left wants America to think it does.
          A particularly absurd Salon headline this week reads, "Baltimore's violent protesters are right: Smashing police cars is a legitimate political strategy." The author's argument is that non-violence is "a tactic, not a philosophy" and that black communities are struggling against "premeditated economic exploitation." Riots are simply "reasonable responses to generations of extreme state violence, and logical decisions about what kind of actions yield the desired political results."
          According to Fordham University sociology professor Heather Gautney, "Riots like the ones we are seeing in Baltimore … should be viewed as rational responses to injustice. Riots highlight the injustice and violence that's prevalent in impoverished neighborhoods in this country."
          And BuzzFeed's Adam Serwer writes, "Violence — as harmful and self-destructive as it is — sometimes works." Serwer claims that, for 80 years, the "recipe for urban riots" has been largely the same: "(a)n impoverished and politically disempowered black population refused full American citizenship, a heavy-handed and overwhelmingly white police force, a generous amount of neglect, and frequently, the loss of black life at the hands of the police."  -The Patriot Post

 Media Bears Responsibility for the Violence  
(leanrightamerica.org) - Tuesday morning, 23-year-old Jeremiah Matthews allegedly entered a Houston Wal-Mart, walked up to a female off-duty police officer, and attacked her with a knife...By the time bystander Abe Baker intervened, Matthews had stabbed April Pikes 14 times, leaving her alive but in danger of losing her right arm. According to investigators, he had carried out the attack “because police are oppressive.” Pikes was moonlighting as a security guard for the superstore when Matthews came at her with what witnesses described as a hunting knife. At a press conference that afternoon, a community activist spoke on behalf of the Matthews family. He confirmed that the assailant had a history of mental illness, and he also admitted that Matthews may have taken his cues from the situation in Baltimore surrounding the death of Freddie Gray. Investigators say that Matthews told them that brutal treatment from the police had driven him to the deed. Without question, Matthews deserves the blame for his actions. Anyone who engages in violence must accept responsibility for the consequences. That said, the media should take a close look at this case and turn the camera on themselves. (Tad Cronn) - Lawmakers in the House got up the nerve to strike down a law that pro-abortion groups want very badly...The law in question is the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act, and as you can figure from the euphemistic title, it’s about cramming the abortion agenda down Americans’ throats. The Left portrays the law as protecting pro-abortion workers (now there’s a class I never thought of as discriminated against) from discrimination in hiring because of their political views. It’s the old Left Wing tactic of infiltrate and change from within: Once you pack an opposing group with enough of your own people, just change the sign on the front door and complete the purge. It would almost be funny if it weren’t so serious. (Leo Hohmann) - The multicultural transformation of Idaho will continue with a planned infusion of hundreds of refugees from Muslim countries over the next one to three years...A local newspaper in Twin Falls reported that city will receive 300 mostly Syrian refugees over the next fiscal year starting Oct. 1. But WND has learned the numbers will be much larger statewide and include refugees from Syria, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Congo and possibly Somalia.  Republicans Are Making a Big Mistake Trying to “Fix” nObamacare  
(Onan Coca) - The Supreme Court may very well rule against nObamacare this summer, ending government subsidies for millions of Americans and forcing them to pay full cost for their healthcare needs...This would be a massive blow to the nObama administration and to the Democrat Party, but don’t worry, the GOP is trying to step in and save the day. For the Democrats that is. A group of Republicans Senators are planning to use the possible victory as leverage against the nObama administration in an effort to push the President to end the employer mandate and the individual mandate. At first blush, this seems like a great idea…. Except all this does is salvage nObamacare for another day. The GOP doesn’t think they can end nObamacare while nObama is still President, but a ruling that negates subsidies will end it for them. If the Supreme Court rules against nObamacare this summer, it will destroy any positive impact the nObama administration hoped it might have.  Deportations Plummet As Officials Stop Enforcing Law  
(fixthisnation.com) - According to a new report from the Associated Press, the nObama administration will deport fewer illegal immigrants this year than at any time in the last decade...As of April 20, immigration officials have deported only 127,378 illegals in 2015. If that pace continues, fewer immigrants will be deported this year than at any time since the George W. Bush administration. According to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, there are perfectly reasonable explanations behind the drop. He told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that factors such as changing demographics and fewer arrests at the border have contributed to the decline. “With the resources we have,” he said, “I’m interested in focusing on criminals and recent illegal arrivals at the border.” In other words, he’s interested in carrying out President nObama’s executive actions, even though those actions have been frozen by a federal judge.      (burtprelutsky.com) - I know that a lot of people are waiting to hear Mrs. Clinton answer tough questions from reporters, but I’m not one of them. I’m pretty old and I’m not sure I have the time to sit through too many of her answers.

     For instance, Morton Michaels reminds me that in 2014, when asked about her accomplishments as Secretary of State, she responded: “Well, I’m glad you asked me that! My proudest accomplishment in which I take the most pride, mostly because of the opposition it faced early on, you know…the remnants of prior situations and mindsets that were too narrowly focused in a manner whereby they may have overlooked the bigger picture and we didn’t do that and I’m proud of that. Very proud. I would say that’s a major accomplishment.”

     The scariest thing of all is that tens of millions of Democrats would listen to that incoherent drivel, nod and say, “Yep, she’s the smartest woman in the world.”

     Pundits never tire of pointing out that Hilly has a frosty relationship with the members of the media. Well, I know why I despise them, but I can’t figure out her attitude. It strikes me that theirs is one of the great tales of unrequited love, taking its place alongside “The Great Gatsby” and “Cyrano de Bergerac.” The members of the media, after all, wear their hearts on their sleeves when it comes to liberals, but it’s as if Hilly takes it as an affront that they seem to adore Nancy Pulosi, Barbara Boxer and Elizabeth Warren, every bit as much as they love her.

     Because Hilly treated the members of the media with the contempt they deserve, the twerps were forced to read great meaning into the fact that in Iowa she visited a Chipotle restaurant and ordered a burrito bowl with a side of guacamole, as if they were reading tea leaves or Tarot cards. Was she reaching out to the Hispanic population or perhaps the avocado growers of America? Or perhaps this woman of the people simply had no idea what a burrito was and thought she was ordering a donut.

     How can one not enjoy her attempts to pass herself off as just a typical granny in spite of having $200 million in the family checking account? She can’t even say something as non-partisan as referring to “all the truckers I saw on the I-80 as I was driving here” without reminding us that this self-proclaimed champion of the middleclass hasn’t even driven a car in 25 years.

     I expect when she is finally forced to answer for those millions of dollars that flowed into the Clinton coffers even while she was serving as Secretary of State, she’ll channel her inner Bill, and respond in typical Clintonian fashion: “It all depends on what the meaning of ‘bribery’ is.”

     In the meantime, her utter contempt for journalists is the only thing about her I like.

     ♦ If the media didn’t see its mission as being the propaganda arm of the Socialist Party, someone would ask nObama why, if Islamic terrorists are not really Islamic, he continues to supply Gitmo inmates with Korans, a Muslim diet and prayer mats, and why he insisted that the Navy provide Osama bin Laden’s carcass with a religious send-off at sea.

     ♦ Even I know that as soon as the Federal Reserve stops keeping the economy afloat by printing funny money and maintaining interest rates at zero, the Stock Market will crash and burn. It’s inevitable, just as it was in 2008. How could it have been otherwise, thanks to sub-prime mortgages?

     The banks were happy to cash in, but it was the Democrats who got the ball rolling. They assumed that allowing people with lousy credit to buy homes with no money down would provide them with a windfall on Election Day. After all, on page one of their playbook, it says the best way to win elections is to buy votes with other people’s money.

     Of course one reason the Democrats were able to carry it off is because people like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and the bureaucrats at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lied about the actual number of sub-prime loans, waiting like time bombs to go off. They told us there were six million. Turns out there were 31 million.

     ♦ Here in California, Jerry Brown and his stooges blame the drought on the lack of rainfall without mentioning that we are never more than a few years away from the next drought. What they fail to mention is that they haven’t built a new reservoir in 40 years or even considered taking advantage of a 700 mile coastline by building desalinization plants.

     They even have the audacity to accuse farmers of wasting water, never once blaming the environmental lobby for denying water to farmland in order to safeguard such after-thoughts of Mother Nature as the delta smelt, the spotted owl and the flaky self-important members of the Sierra Club.

     In the ongoing debate, even without knowing any of the pertinent facts, who would you imagine to be the more responsible stewards of the earth: rich San Francisco snots who gather regularly to drink white wine spritzers and nosh on brie or the San Joaquin farmers who depend on the earth for their livelihood?

     ♦ In other news, when the PBS documentary series, “Finding Your Roots,” discovered that an ancestor of uberliberal Ben Affleck had been a slave owner, Affleck persuaded the show to conceal the fact. Naturally, PBS obliged him, explaining, once the story broke, that it wasn’t censorship; they had merely come up with a more interesting ancestor.

     Pardon my cynicism, but would PBS have cut a conservative celebrity, someone like Jon Voight, Pat Boone or Pat Sajak, the same slack? Not likely unless the more interesting ancestor turned out to be Benedict Arnold.

     ♦ Over the course of the past week, I have received a few more questions addressed to Dear Burt, everyone’s favorite seer.

     “Dear Burt: What do you think of presidential debates as a way of deciding on a Republican candidate? Curious in Chicago.”

     “Dear Curious: If they actually proved anything, we’d probably be better off electing members of high school or college debating teams. Which, considering some of the candidates we’ve come up with, might not be the worst idea in the world. A better process would involve arming the combatants with long knives and placing them all in a deep pit. The person who finally climbed out would then be in a better position to run against Hilly.”

     “Dear Burt: What did you make of the melee that recently took place when a large group of demonstrators carrying signs reading “Captivity is Slavery,” “Animals are Innocent” and “Stop the Injustice,” got into a scuffle with employees of the Ramos Brothers Circus? Anxious in Augusta.”

     “Dear Anxious: Frankly, I don’t enjoy seeing elephants being forced to parade around the ring like a bunch of showgirls. But the only surprising thing about watching liberal pinheads brawling with circus clowns is that for once it took place in San Bernardino, CA, and not in Washington, D.C.

In the oral arguments over the Supreme Court case that may institute same-sex marriage nationwide, the Court appeared to split along its usual lines, with Justice Anthony Kennedy once again becoming the justice on which the whole decision rests. Like many, Hot Air's Allahpundit saw Justice Kennedy sympathetic to the arguments made by the pro-same-sex-marriage lobby.  National Guard, Curfew Quell Second Night of Baltimore Unrest  
The rioting Monday night in Baltimore left 19 buildings and 144 vehicles burned, 20 police officers injured and 235 people arrested. But what we saw by dawn on Wednesday is that Tuesday's violence was subdued. Two thousand National Guard members and 400 state troopers enforced a 10 p.m. city-wide curfew. Baltimore was hesitant at first to crack down on the initial stages of unrest because many of the unruly were youth, but then the violence evolved. "When we deployed our officers yesterday, we were deploying for a high school event," Baltimore PD spokesman Capt. Eric Kowalcyzk said. "I don't think there's anyone that would expect us to deploy with automatic weapons and armored vehicles for 13-, 14- and 15-year olds."
          Meanwhile, about 50 protesters were demonstrating in Ferguson, Missouri, last night when a man was shot in the lower leg. While it's not clear if the shooting is connected to the demonstrations, police threatened to use "chemical munitions" to clear the crowd. Later, a group set fire to trashcans and a portable toilet. Even after all this time, violence still lingers in the St. Louis suburb. However, Barack nObama wasn't about to say the riots are due to a malformed relationship between cops and citizens. No, for him, the problem is Republicans. In pushing for a free-trade agreement with countries arrayed around the Pacific Ocean, Barack nObama has managed to enter the rare political situation of gaining opponents in both Democrat and Republican parties. Democrats, led by the likes of Elizabeth Warren, bray that the Trans-Pacific Partnership will hurt the middle class. Republicans, well, they have a right to be suspicious, because the administration that "led" the U.S. economy on its slowest recovery to date wants to negotiate a trade deal that will have huge economic implications. Furthermore, nObama is seeking approval for this treaty in a simple yes-no vote, a move that speeds up the negotiation process, but one that also cheapens Congress' role in negotiating treaties. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, nObama called the skeptics of the Trans-Pacific Partnership scared of a little globalization. After all, if the U.S. does nothing, then China will establish its trade agreements and earn influence over that corner of the globe. "What we can't do, though, is withdraw," nObama said. "There has been a confluence of anti-global engagement from both elements of the right and elements of the left that I think [is] a big mistake."  Why Is SCOTUS Even Considering Same-Sex Marriage?   
Since the very definition of marriage is up for grabs at the U.S. Supreme Court this week — SCOTUS entertained oral arguments Tuesday on a number of cases consolidated under the central issue of the un-constitutionality of states' ability to deny gay marriage — we thought this an appropriate point to interject reason into the debate, strengthened by an understanding of history — Constitutional history. Let's start with the basics: The Constitution of the United States has nothing to say about marriage, "gay" or otherwise. What does that mean?
          Well, if you know nothing about civics, it means nothing. Unfortunately, that's the take the religiously zealous supporters of same-sex marriage are trying to foist off on the Supremes this week. Their approach, of course, doesn't admit to this, or even begin to touch on the truly core issue — Federalism — for the same reason abortionist supporters of Roe v. Wade did not: They would otherwise lose. Let's walk through this Matrix together, Neo.
          The Constitution is the foundational legal document governing our nation. For almost 200 years it served as the backbone behind the body of laws under which the lowliest individual to the U.S. President operated. All of that changed with the Progressive Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s, FDR's New Deal and a host of other progressive assaults on the concept of the Rule of Law. Wiser-than-the-rest-of-us progressives rejected this idea in favor of the arrogation that some people (read: them) are better suited to rule than others (read: you), and accordingly pushed to make the Constitution a "living, breathing document" (read: changeable to suit progressives' needs).  WAIT. WHAT? HILLY CALLS FOR ‘RESTORING TRUST’ IN  POLITICS  
Facing a scandal that threatens to capsize her quest to return to the White House,Hilly Clinton debuted her first major policy speech since the official launch of her current campaign. Clinton focused on a call to end “mass incarceration” in America and denounced racial injustice in the legal system, but her focus was on the question of “trust” saying “we must urgently rebuild the bonds of trust and respect among Americans. …Restoring trust in our politics, our press, our markets.” That’s a pretty tall order for a woman who is now widely distrusted by the American electorate and facing accusations that she and her husband raked in part of their massive fortune through payola from people doing business with her State Department. Remember the last time Clinton spoke in so public a setting in New York, she was explaining that she had destroyed 31,000 emails from her time in office.
          It’s quite a switch for Clinton to join President nObama and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in anti-imprisonment crusade. Clinton has long heralded the tough-on-crime policies of her husband’s administration – laws credited with helping to end the bloody drug turf wars of the 1990s but blamed for a booming black prison population. Under the Clinton administration, federal prosecutors stepped up drug prosecutions and today, and today most federal inmates are behind bars for drug offenses. Facing pressure from her left and a skeptical black electorate, Clinton had no trouble making the reversal.
          Clinton swung hard on the subject and seemed to score – at least with reporters. One called her speech “truly remarkable” and another called it “compelling.” But how about the issue of moral authority? Clinton is no doubt right that Americans, and not just black Americans, have lost confidence in the basic institutions of the Republic. What is unclear is how a woman who has been at the core of the bipartisan establishment for decades and is embroiled in what is only the latest corruption scandal of her long career can credibly claim the mantle of change. The candidate who is famous for shady dealing and intense secrecy doesn’t sound like the one to make the pitch for reform.

     By dismantling the fundamental traditions and beliefs of a nation piece by piece, you ultimate will destroy it. Claiming this is done in the name of “love” or “equality” ignores the greater societal issues involved in marriage; the creation of families with mothers and fathers, and, indeed, the welfare of children raised in same-sex marriages.

     Abortion remains a moral issue in the minds and hearts of many Americans and now they are waiting to see how the Supreme Court will rule on same-sex marriage. As Ryan T. Anderson wrote in The Heritage Foundation’s publication, The Daily Signal, “There simply is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that requires all 50 states to redefine marriage.”

     “The over-arching question before the Supreme Court is not whether a male-female marriage policy is the best, but only whether it is allowed by the Constitution. The question is not whether government-recognized same-sex marriage is good or bad policy, but only whether it is required by the Constitution.”
.
     Anderson points out that “The only way the Court could strike down laws that define marriage as the union of husband and wife is to adopt a view of marriage that sees it an essentially genderless institution…” Marriage is all about gender and the union of opposites that is blessed by the community when a man and woman enter into it. To legalize same-sex marriage is to degrade the essential element of society, the keystone of family.

     What we are witnessing is the current high point in a long campaign to remove any obstacle to being homosexual and the right to marry another homosexual represents an important political goal for  GLBT community. For them it’s not about the thousands of years in which all societies forbid the marriage between those of the same gender or the 227 years since the Constitution was ratified.
.
     Clearly the Constitution neither requires nor bans same-sex marriage. The thought of such a marriage would never have occurred to the Founding Fathers and the creation of a new nation had far greater priorities and responsibilities than same-sex marriage. Most such issues such as abortion were left to the states to determine. Even so, when the voters of California voted in 2008 to ban same-sex marriage, the courts there overturned it.

     We are witnessing a homosexual juggernaut that will settle for nothing less than their own interpretation of the relations between the sexes.
.
     When the Supreme Court hears the same-sex marriage case on Tuesday, April 28, it will be decided by a Court that is sharply divided between liberal and conservative points of view, but in the legal community, there is no argument that, as federal law states, “Any justice, judge, or magistrate judge of the United States shall disqualify himself in any proceeding which his impartiality might reasonably be questioned.”

     That’s why the fact that in late September Justice Elena Kagan performed a same-sex “wedding” takes on tremendous importance. As documented by MassResistance.org, Justice Kagan has a long history of advancing homosexual issues and policies. A 16-page report leaves little doubt that she favors acceptance of homosexuality and transgenderism as “civil rights.”

     There is no way that Justice Kagan should join other Supreme Court judges to rule on this case. That would run counter to federal law and would be an arrogant dismissal of the most fundamental concept of justice before the bench.
.
     What we have learned thus far is that the practice of same-sex marriage has proven more a threat to the rights of those who are opposed to it for sincere religious reasons than for those demanding their services. If there is any justice left in America, a bakery or florist should be able to say no. Demanding that they act against their faith tells you a great deal of the homosexual mindset when it comes to their “rights.”

     I am utterly opposed to same-sex “marriage” for all the reasons the Bible and history provide.

     If Justice Kagan does not recuse herself from Tuesday’s case and her fellow justices do not demand that she does, the rule of law and justice in America will have suffered another serious blow.

True.

Woe to the tyrant... whose eyes seize upon another's life and property; thinking to entice the wicked, too engage him, as his appetite grows bold for more...  until, there is no more. Then, shall we hear the voice of the oppressed rise to heaven, and the Supreme Judge of the Land shall speak judgment upon the wicked.

Look up for the day grows short... and the sun soon sets, then darkness will cover the wicked, for a time and a season.  But in the morning, judgment comes, upon the wings of an Eagle it comes... For, the tyrant shall not escape his end... it is certain... deaths curtain, shall embrace him; tomorrow and tomorrow in an eternity of sorrow.

(rickwells.us) - New information has surfaced which indicates that Baltimore thug-turned police “victim” Freddie Gray might have been exhibiting some self-destructive behavior during his ride in the police paddy wagon during which he is believed to have been fatally injured...A fellow prisoner who was riding in the same vehicle with Gray has come forward with a statement that from the commotion he heard Gray making, which included him “banging against the walls” of the vehicle, he believed at the time that Gray “was intentionally trying to injure himself.” It was recently learned that Gray had previously suffered spinal injuries as the result of a car accident and had received a significant insurance settlement. If he sees his shadow and returns to his hole, that means there will be six more weeks of winter...Skeptics might roll their eyes at the accuracy of a groundhog’s predictions, but when it comes to the new Saudi Crown Prince, Muhammad Bin Nayyef, predictions are much clearer. Whether or not the Saudi groundhog sees his shadow, he will plant the seeds for decades more sectarian hatred and push sectarian warfare to the forefront of Saudi foreign policy. When King Abdullah died and Crown Prince Salman took over the Saudi throne, I wrote that there were dark clouds on the horizon with the appointment of the 55-year-old Muhammad bin Nayef as deputy crown prince.      (burtprelutsky.com) - Like everyone else who can’t wait for the nObamas to vacate the White House, I want to tell 2017 not to dawdle. No stopping to smell the roses while the rest of us are sniffing the swamp gas emanating from what has come to be known over the past six years as the Offal Office.

     I have long believed that you could get a pretty good handle on a person if you knew his friends and his enemies. In nObama’s case, his friends, those folks for whom he doesn’t mind going that extra mile, seem to consist of Vladimir Putin, the Ayatollah Khamenei and the Castros, which explains why Raul Castro recently declared that “Barack nObama is a decent man.” As commendations go, that’s rather like having Hitler calling you a nice guy.
.
     On the other hand, Obama’s enemy list includes Israel’s Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, Egypt’s President el-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Christians, America’s conservatives, law-abiding gun owners and, of course, Fox News.
.
     It is also telling that nObama and his stooges always manage to come up with tax dollars for illegal aliens, Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills and urban blacks, but rarely for our wounded military veterans.
.
     ♦ Speaking of welfare, in Maine, a three-month limit has been established on food stamps for able-bodied adults without minor dependents (ABAWDS) unless they work 20 hours a week, attend job-training courses or volunteer for six hours a week. I think you’d agree that’s not too demanding. And yet the mere notion of doing volunteer work for about an hour-a-day was enough to decrease the number of these clodhoppers receiving food stamps by 80%!
.
     I suspect that if Maine added mandatory drug-testing to the requirements, it could eliminate that last 20%.
.
     ♦ In case you’re unaware of it, the Rolling Stone, the uber left-wing rag, recently ran a story about a gang rape that allegedly took place at a University of Virginia fraternity house. It turned out that Jackie, the “victim” had made it up out of whole cloth, which, unfortunately, is the case far too often when it comes to campus assaults. But what made this case worthy of attention was that nobody insisted that the reporter speak to the alleged rapists, to the woman’s friends or even to the local police.
.
     Even when the Stone’s owner and editors fessed up, the apology sounded a lot like, “Okay, we were mistaken this one time (okay, twice, if you insist on bringing up the Duke Lacrosse team), but the fact is that young southerners enjoy nothing better than raping coeds unless it’s lynching black men.”
.
     For those on the Left who pooh-pooh conservatives when they accuse the mainstream media of having an agenda, whether it involves cases such as these or endemic racism among white cops, this is what we’re talking about.
.
     ♦ Speaking of cops, some of the stupidest people in America, and that certainly includes Al Sharpton and the members of the Congressional Black Caucus, are those who compare cops to Klansmen. However, some of the other stoopnagels are cops. I mean ever since Rodney King, if a police officer so much as coughs without covering his mouth, it’s captured on video. So how is it that some of them still seem to believe that donning the uniform makes them invisible?
.
     ♦ Speaking of stupid, how is it that so many so-called journalists haven’t caught on that if they’re going to devote their lives to shilling for the Democrats, they shouldn’t be working for newspapers and earning peanuts? What they should do is call themselves political strategists like James Carville, Joe Trippi, Mark Hannah and Lanny Davis. They’d not only make a fortune, but force millions of us to fast-forward through any Fox show on which they happened to appear.
.
     ♦ Some of you may have noticed that I have cooled slightly on Scott Walker. It’s nothing that he’s done or even anything he said. In fact, it was his response to the English reporter who asked him what he thought of the Theory of Evolution. Instead of saying he believed in it or that he didn’t, he blinked and said something along the lines of “I wouldn’t touch that question with a 10-foot pole.”
.
     While it’s true that there was no reason to pose the question, and we all know that the same reporter would not ask it of Barack nObama or Hilly Clinton, I don’t want a Republican presidential candidate to ask himself how an answer to any question is going to play in Iowa or New Hampshire, Ohio or Texas.
.
     Frankly, I don’t care what Walker or any of the GOP contenders thinks about Charles Darwin. As president, nothing Walker says or does is going to involve evolution. But if you’re not savvy enough to say, “Darwin had his theories and I have my own when it comes to simplifying the tax code, building up our military, closing the southern border, shutting down the EPA, defending Israel, standing up to Iran and killing Islamic terrorists wherever they raise their ugly heads,” I’m not sure you’re ready for primetime.
.
     ♦ After viewing Hilly’s video announcing her candidacy, showing her posed in front of a white picket fence, which didn’t even slightly resemble the Clinton mansion in Chappaqua, NY, a friend told me he expected some kid to come by and ask her if the Beav could come out and play. For my part, I was surprised not to see one of Ma Clinton’s famous hot apple pies cooling on the window sill.
.
     ♦ When I recently wrote that Rand Paul was too short to be elected president, a couple of Sen. Paul’s fans reminded me that James Madison was a mere 5-foot-4. But I pointed out that was 200 years ago when the average height of American men wasn’t what it is today. Besides, without TV, most Americans had no idea how tall Madison was or how he measured up against George Clinton, Charles Pinckney or Rufus King. Moreover, people were a lot smarter back then, and welfare recipients, not to mention illegal aliens, weren’t being encouraged to vote.
.
     ♦ Finally, I recently read that Olivia de Havilland, a contract player at Warner Brothers, begged Jack Warner to loan her out to MGM so she could take the role of Melanie in “Gone with the Wind.” Although it was commonplace and profitable for studios to rent out their stars, Jack Warner was reluctant because he always felt that when they came back to his no frills factory, they tended to be malcontents.
.
     So after being turned down by Jack, Olivia invited Mrs. Warner to have lunch at the Brown Derby. She presented her case, Jack’s wife interceded on her behalf and before you could say, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” Olivia de Havilland had the role and an Oscar nomination.
.
     The reason I mention this is because it relates to something in my own life. Many years ago when I was in my 20s, living in Los Angeles, I received an assignment from the Sundaysupplement in the Chicago Tribune to write a piece about the upcoming TV season. They told me they wanted me to interview the producers of the many new one-hour dramas that would debut in September. They specifically told me they weren’t interested in the financial impact it would have on the networks when most of their half-hour sit coms were displaced.

     I watched the pilot episodes, interviewed the producers and mailed the article off to Chicago. The next thing I knew, the editor of the Sunday supplement let me know he was dissatisfied. Where, he wanted to know, were all the financial details? I reminded him that he had told me to ignore all that boring stuff.

     When he held fast, I wrote to his boss, the managing editor, who wrote back to say he gave his subordinate editors absolute autonomy to do as they pleased.

     Fortunately, I still had relatives living in Chicago and both editors had distinctive names. So I wrote to a cousin and asked him to find out their home addresses. As soon as I had them, I addressed letters to their wives, explained the situation and asked them how they’d feel if they had a son living 1,800 miles away who was being jerked around this way. .      I never heard back from either of the women, but within a week, I received a check from the Tribune.

     At the time, I realized that nearly every man has a conscience. But as Olivia de Havilland had discovered, they often come by them the same way they wind up with in-laws and mortgages; namely, through marriage.

Freddie Gray Investigation Handed Over to Prosecutors

Baltimore city officials are mum after the police department handed its investigation into the death of Freddie Gray over to state prosecutors Thursday, a day before they said the investigation would be completed. The public still doesn’t know the details surrounding the 25-year-old’s death. Maryland State Attorney Marilyn Mosby said, “While we have and will continue to leverage the information received by the department, we are not relying solely on their findings but rather the facts that we have gathered and verified. We ask for the public to remain patient and peaceful and to trust the process of the justice system.” Prosecutors will decide whether or not to bring charges against the six police officers who are currently suspended from the Baltimore police force.

Meanwhile, the likes of Al Sharpton are in Baltimore, and they will not be satisfied if the prosecutors' decision doesn’t go their way. Daniel Henninger writes in The Wall Street Journal, “When Al Sharpton popularized the chant, ‘No justice, no peace,’ it was unmistakably clear that ‘no peace’ was an implicit threat of civil unrest. Not civil disobedience, as practiced by Martin Luther King Jr. Civil unrest.” Now is the time for conservatives to focus on ways to rebuild Baltimore to counter Sharpton’s race baiting and give residents better paths to prosperity.More…

In Campaign, Hillary Clinton Distances Herself From Bill

On April 29, Hillary Clinton stood before an audience at Columbia University and criticized America’s criminal justice system, the system her husband helped create in 1994 with the passage of his Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. “We have allowed our criminal justice system to get out of balance,” Ms. Clinton said. “And these recent tragedies [in Baltimore and Ferguson] should galvanize us to come together as a nation to find our balance again.” This is not the only instance where Hillary has positioned herself directly opposing the legislation and policies that her husband’s administration instituted some 20 years before. Bill signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law; Hillary now says same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. Bill’s administration repealed the Glass-Steagall Act; Hillary wants it restored. The Washington Free Beacon reports that this distancing extends all the way to edits of Hillary’s official campaign bio. In 2008, her biography said “she followed her heart and a man named Bill Clinton to Arkansas” instead of pursuing a career at a big law firm. Eight years later, Clinton’s bio now says she skipped the big-law career path because she wanted to fight for children and families at the Children’s Defense Fund. With all the revisions, it seems Hillary only kept the name “Clinton” for the name recognition. More…

Updated Satellite Data Puts a Chill on Global Warming

More bad news for climate scaremongers. Remote Sensing Systems recordings, which more accurately reflect global temperatures, have perplexed many scientists ever since they revealed a global warming hiatus that’s now lasted for more than 18 years. In response, alarmists have trashed RSS findings in favor of NOAA’s complicated and flawed method. Three University of Alabama climatologists, Roy Spencer, John Christy and William Braswell, just concluded additional research on UAH Version 6, an alternative system used to study global temperatures. Not only did the new research cast further doubt on the claims of climate alarmists, but the adjustments revealed similar results to that of RSS. You can read more about why revisions are necessary and, notably, how these revisions are different than NOAA’s alleged tampering with historical data. To summarize, UAH’s newest finding is another inconvenient truth for envirofascists — which is exactly why they’ll ignore it.

Sen. Corker’s Stand for a Better GOP Budget

Republicans' first attempt to present a fiscally responsible budget after assuming control of Capitol Hill ran into some snags this week. A budget resolution hashed out between House and Senate negotiators was expected to see an easy passage before Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) stalled the process by refusing to sign on to the final proposal.

Corker, recently listed as one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, where he was described as the “pragmatist of Congress,” is known for having a strong grasp of economics after spending many successful years in the private sector. He withdrew his support of the budget because he saw the proposal as riddled with budget gimmicks.

The resolution that Republicans crafted relies on a budget tool that gives lawmakers flexibility in dealing with spending curbs. This budgetary shell game is cleverly known as CHIMPS ⎯ Changes in Mandatory Programs — and it allows for boosting spending in some areas by offsetting spending in mandatory programs. The trouble with CHIMPS is that those spending cuts in mandatory programs are rarely, if ever, honored, basically amounting to an overall increase in spending.

“CHIMPS is a budget gimmick that is $190 billion in extra spending over a 10 year period,” Corker told reporters Tuesday. “And it’s something our caucus all has been for eliminating.”

Republicans gained control of both chambers of Congress in part because of their promise of fiscal responsibility after a decade of budgetary chaos thanks to spendthrift Democrats. Under the leadership of heavyweight curmudgeon Harry Reid, the Senate flat out refused to craft budgets, as required by law, opting instead to hide the true nature of impending fiscal doom through a series of continuing resolutions.

The GOP wants to bring an end to this craziness by passing budgets that come into balance in ten years. But thanks to CHIMPS, military spending will increase in the coming fiscal year without any significant cuts to entitlements.

Corker’s refusal to sign on to the budget proposal made sense for fiscal hawks. The GOP’s inability to curb spending its first time out as the majority party on Capitol Hill does not bode well for the future of its grand plan to bring fiscal sanity to Washington. So-called moderate Republicans who are just as drunk on spending as Democrats gleefully rely on CHIMPS and other budget tricks to circumvent the sequestration caps put in place four years ago. Corker’s opposition to the status quo offered a welcome change to the lip service being paid on spending.

But all is not what it seems in Washington. Wednesday, Corker reversed himself and signed on to the House-Senate budget proposal. “There is no question this budget is far from perfect,” Corker said, “But it is some progress since it has been a long time since Congress has completed this basic part of governing.”

With Corker allowing the budget to proceed, the House passed the proposal 226-197 Thursday, sticking close to their self-imposed deadline to move things forward before leaving town for a brief recess. Fourteen Republicans joined all the Democrats in opposition. The Senate will vote on the proposal in a few days.

Corker’s change of attitude could be considered a flip-flop since there were no fundamental changes made to the resolution to get him on board. But by making his initial stand, he brought to light some of the fundamental problems that plague the budget process in Washington.

To say that federal spending is out of control may be the mother of all understatements. The national debt is over $18 trillion, close to $10 trillion of which has been amassed since Barack Obama took office. Budget deficits, which averaged around $1 trillion a year for his first term, are still in the $500 billion range. Obama is proposing a 7% across-the-board spending increase for the next fiscal year, and he has vowed to veto any Republican budget that adheres to the sequestration cuts that he suggested then later blamed on Republicans.

Democrats have remained resolutely committed to spending without limits while ignoring the inevitable consequences of the government’s careless fiscal strategy, or lack thereof. Senate Democrats are expected to unanimously oppose the budget like their colleagues in the House.

The budget process is complicated and filled with numerous moving parts. It’s no wonder that it puts people’s brains to sleep. Unfortunately, it’s had the same effect on those elected to actually negotiate it.

Many citizens know the dangers of not cutting back on spending, yet when it comes time for the government to actually do so people balk at their favorite programs being cut because so many are now on the government dole. This was by liberal design. Over the course of many years, Democrats have steadily convinced the public that people need the government to run all these services and provide cradle-to-grave entitlements. No one stopped to consider just how all these programs would be paid for.

That is why Corker’s stand against the CHIMPS budget gimmick, brief though it was, is so important. It highlights the fantasy world in which Congressional lawmakers live, and it reminds us all that this world must give way to reality if America wants to avoid political and economic disaster.

First Quarter GDP Is a Harsh Reality Check

Other than the first quarter, last year was a better year for the economy. After contracting 2.1% to start off 2014, GDP jumped to 4.6% in the second quarter and 5% in the third quarter before slipping to 2.2% to round out the year. So, how’s 2015 looking so far? Well, chilly — literally, according to Democrats. The Commerce Department released initial numbers for the first quarter of 2015, and, at a sluggish 0.2%, GDP once again tempered America’s level of economic enthusiasm. And the “worse-than-expected” downtrend is inevitably being blamed on winter weather woes. Jason Furman, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said this latest estimate “was likely affected by notably harsh winter weather” — interesting considering we’re supposedly coming off the warmest year on record and had a record warm start to 2015. It’s also the same recycled excuse they used last year.

Moreover, as Nick Timiraos of The Wall Street Journal reminds us, revisions knocked last year’s initial first quarter growth down by a staggering two percentage points — from 0.1% to -2.1%. Is a repeat in the offing? Yesterday’s report continues a familiar trend under the Obama recovery — a roller coaster ride that features some signs of life along with harsh reality checks. Stability and sustainability are still lacking in the economy, which will continue through at least 2017.

Bernie Sanders Challenges Clinton for Democrat Nomination

At least the Democrat presidential primary got interesting. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the politician who described himself as a “democratic socialist” and who was described by the New York Times as an adherent to “that old-time religion” of populism, announced he is campaigning to win the Democrat Party’s nomination as its presidential candidate. The politician that was once too far to the Left for the Democrat Party told the Associated Press, “People should not underestimate me. I’ve run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country.” Right out of the gate, Sanders challenged Hillary Clinton’s succession to the throne by bringing the progressive rhetoric that splits rich versus poor and capitalizes on income inequality. “What we have seen is that while the average person is working longer hours for lower wages,” Sanders said, “we have seen a huge increase in income and wealth inequality, which is now reaching obscene levels.” Between the two candidates, Clinton still seems the greater threat. Sanders appears more harmless than calculating, and a Sanders nomination will pull the Democrat Party further from middle America.

Did Freddie Gray Try to Injure Himself in the Police Van?

If true, the death of Freddie Gray may not have anything to do with police brutality and more to do with an irrational man bent on self-harm. This in from The Washington Post: “A prisoner sharing a police transport van with Freddie Gray told investigators that he could hear Gray ‘banging against the walls’ of the vehicle and believed that he ‘was intentionally trying to injure himself,’ according to a police document obtained by The Washington Post.” This story has the ring of truthiness about it, but is it really? Jazz Shaw writes at Hot Air that the prisoner could be an unreliable witness — similar to the witnesses that said Michael Brown had his hands up. Furthermore, Investigative Reporter at Baltimore’s NBC affiliate TV station Jayne Miller said the Post’s account contradicts what the Baltimore Police Commissioner said a week ago. At the time, he said the prisoner described Gray as “mostly quiet.” The timeline is still being reconstructed. When we do get the complete and truthful story, what will happen if the rioters, who already destroyed much of Baltimore, do not get the conclusion for which they demanded?

No, Riots Are Not a ‘Legitimate Political Strategy’

Reading the liberal media, you’d think the Baltimore rioters are the reincarnation of Lexington and Concord’s minutemen, bravely facing tyrants to defend their freedom. Well, Paul Revere might disagree. Somehow, ruining businesses and running off with condoms doesn’t quite equate to Patrick Henry’s speech “Give me Liberty or give me death.”

But the Left wants America to think it does.

A particularly absurd Salon headline this week reads, “Baltimore’s violent protesters are right: Smashing police cars is a legitimate political strategy.” The author’s argument is that non-violence is “a tactic, not a philosophy” and that black communities are struggling against “premeditated economic exploitation.” Riots are simply “reasonable responses to generations of extreme state violence, and logical decisions about what kind of actions yield the desired political results.”

According to Fordham University sociology professor Heather Gautney, “Riots like the ones we are seeing in Baltimore … should be viewed as rational responses to injustice. Riots highlight the injustice and violence that’s prevalent in impoverished neighborhoods in this country.”

And BuzzFeed’s Adam Serwer writes, “Violence — as harmful and self-destructive as it is — sometimes works.” Serwer claims that, for 80 years, the “recipe for urban riots” has been largely the same: “(a)n impoverished and politically disempowered black population refused full American citizenship, a heavy-handed and overwhelmingly white police force, a generous amount of neglect, and frequently, the loss of black life at the hands of the police.”

But is portraying lawless violence as a justified and effective quest for justice accurate?

A closer look at the facts says, “No.”

For starters, as Acton Institute Senior Editor Joe Carter points out, far from empowering black communities, urban riots leave lingering damage. In 2004, The National Bureau of Economic Research published research on riots that took place in the 1960s and 1970s, and Carter notes the research found not only a decline in the median black family income in riot-impacted cities but also declines in male employment rates and in the median value of black-owned property.

And as for “premeditated economic exploitation” and political disempowerment justifying violence, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson notes that even during the era of Jim Crow laws, when institutionalized racism was both legal and praised, black crime was “relatively low” — no riots as a “legitimate political strategy ” then. And since Johnson’s infamous War on Poverty was launched, Peterson adds, there has been a “massive wealth transfer to black Americans in the form of welfare and other handouts.” Certainly, a case can be made for economic exploitation, but the indictment would be against those intent on keeping black voters dependent on the government for handouts.

Is violence, then, justified, or is it simply being used as an escape from tackling problems with resolution — not simply retribution — in mind? Just as profanity is often the discourse of those unwilling to develop a compelling vocabulary, so violence is often the discourse of those unwilling to develop compelling arguments.

And there is inarguably a need for compelling arguments. While America has made exceptional strides toward Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s goal of judging others based not on the color of their skin but on the content of their character, racism has sadly not yet breathed its last in America.

Yet, even amid racism, King himself held firmly his belief “that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt.” He continued, “I’ve been searching for a long time for an alternative to riots on one hand and timid supplication for justice on the other and I think that alternative is found in militant massive non-violence.”

When the colonists took up arms and declared independence from Great Britain, they had for 10 years prior sought reconciliation with the Crown and resorted to arms only when their repeated attempts at peace were disregarded. And in the Declaration of Independence, they set forth clearly their justifications for rejecting injustice.

In presenting a dignified argument against racism, Dr. King did the same. And in so doing, he made incredible strides forward for black Americans.

Tragically, the violence of lawless rioters is doing nothing to continue Dr. King’s work and much to undercut it.

Far from elevating violence to a level of rational discourse, endorsing riots as legitimate political strategy diminishes the quality of discourse and demeans the ability of Americans — black and white — to confront injustice not with stones and arson but with truth, which alone has the power to bring justice.

Given that the legitimate powers of the federal government are constrained only to specific areas described in the Enumerated Powers detailed in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, it is not surprising that the violation of this limited authority is falsely justified by corruptions to various clauses  within those Enumerated Powers.

The three clauses commonly corrupted and abused to falsely validate the overreach of federal authority within those Enumerated Powers are:

1)  The General Welfare Clause, indicated in the preamble of the enumerated powers:

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States;..."

2)   The Interstate Commerce Clause, within those enumerated powers.

"To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;"

3)  The Necessary and Proper Clause (Elastic Clause),  the final enumerated power in Article 1, Section 8.

"To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof."

As a result of the deliberate abuse of these clauses,  an  accurate understanding of their true original intent must be established.

GENERAL WELFARE CLAUSE:

General Welfare is not itself a specifically enumerated power of the Constitution, but rather a general reference in the preamble to the enumerated powers that follow.   The General Welfare clause does not grant Congress the power to legislate for the general welfare of the country, nor to expend whatever money it cares  on any "general welfare" but rather has applicability as determined by the enumerated powers that follow.   Unfortunately this clause has been so abused by Progressive ideology that we have a major breach of federal authority and drain on the economy from the "Welfare" state, specifically named to falsely  this clause in the Constitution, and yet dedicated to individual welfare, not "general" at all.

The so-called "general Welfare" introductory preamble preceding the enumerated powers of Article 1, Section 8:

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;


Each one of the enumerated powers that follow this introduction begin with the "To", indicating that this preceding introductory paragraph is entirely and exclusively applicable "TO" those subsequent specific powers, with the conclusion of the above paragraph being a semicolon to further indicate that general authority is linked to and contingent upon the enumerated powers.

Madison and Hamilton directly address the general Welfare clause, and specifically describe the claim that it is any sort of general plenary power as an "absurd" "misconstruction".

Madison, in Federalist #41, addressed the abuses of Article 1, Section 8 we now commonly see today, before ratification and describes this claims as "misconstruction":


It has been urged and echoed, that the power "to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts, and excises, to pay the debts, and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States," amounts to an unlimited commission to exercise every power which may be alleged to be necessary for the common defense or general welfare. No stronger proof could be given of the distress under which these writers labor for objections, than their stooping to such a misconstruction.



Madison even directly addresses that "semicolon" which I previously referenced, indicating:

"But what color can the objection have, when a specification of the objects alluded to by these general terms immediately follows, and is not even separated by a longer pause than a semicolon? If the different parts of the same instrument ought to be so expounded, as to give meaning to every part which will bear it, shall one part of the same sentence be excluded altogether from a share in the meaning; and shall the more doubtful and indefinite terms be retained in their full extent, and the clear and precise expressions be denied any signification whatsoever? For what purpose could the enumeration of particular powers be inserted, if these and all others were meant to be included in the preceding general power? Nothing is more natural nor common than first to use a general phrase, and then to explain and qualify it by a recital of particulars. But the idea of an enumeration of particulars which neither explain nor qualify the general meaning, and can have no other effect than to confound and mislead, is an absurdity, which, as we are reduced to the dilemma of charging either on the authors of the objection or on the authors of the Constitution, we must take the liberty of supposing, had not its origin with the latter.


The "general phrase", above, which is referring to the general Welfare clause, is the introduction of the powers, a "preamble" and entirely applicable to, and "qualifying" that general expression by those enumerated powers, or "particulars", which follow.

Without this being the case, those enumerated powers which follow would serve no valid purpose, being entirely superfluous, as all those powers, and more, would be assumed in a boundless field of power.

"I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground that 'all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states or to the people.' To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, not longer susceptible of any definition."

INTERSTATE COMMERCE CLAUSE:

Abuse of the Commerce Clause has been so severe that it was a major contributing factor to the Civil War, with Congress having violated over decades its federal obligation to to maintain a regular and unbiased commerce between the States, by instituting a series of trade embargoes and regulations preferential to the North, and debilitating to the South.  Today we have been so habituated to the long-growing corruption of the Commerce Clause that we often forget it's intent was to remove animosities between the several states as a result of trade advantages allowing one state to benefit at the cost of other states, thereby creating a cause for warfare among the States.   That purpose was not to give the federal government any authority within those States.

The original meaning of "regulate" in "regulate interstate commerce" was to "regularize", make regular, or make uniform.  The first affirmation of the intent of the Commerce Clause is indicated the preamble to the enumerated powers which concludes with, " but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States."

Further indication of the intent of the Commerce Clause is found in Article 1, Section 9, Prohibitions to Congress:

“No Preference shall be given by any Regulation of Commerce or Revenue to the Ports of one State over those of another: nor shall Vessels bound to, or from, one State, be obliged to enter, clear, or pay Duties in another.”


Here the obvious intent is to prohibit the federal government from legislation preferential to any one state, and thereby more harmful to others by relative comparison. The only legitimate application of "duties" would be on cargo entering the country, with the further application of duties from interstate traffic being prohibited.

This is further supported by Article 1, Section 10, "Limits on States" themselves:

No State shall, without the Consent of the Congress, lay any Imposts or Duties on Imports or Exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing it's inspection Laws: and the net Produce of all Duties and Imposts, laid by any State on Imports or Exports, shall be for the Use of the Treasury of the United States; and all such Laws shall be subject to the Revision and Controul of the Congress.


This not only prohibits any states from any imposts or duties without the Consent of Congress, but also removes any profit incentive from the practice by having any proceeds from those that are necessary beig the property of the U.S. Treasury. Thus, there is further evidence that the ability to "regulate" commerce is intended to prohibit any imbalance between the states - again to "make regular".


The historical record establishes that the word “commerce”, as used by the Founders during the framing and ratification process , as the exchange of goods between between point A and B. In effect Congress was solely given the power in question so as to to insure free trade among the States --- an uninhibited transportation of goods among the states and prevent one state from taxing another state’s goods as they passed through its borders.. or again "make the trade regular".

This is a far cry from how Congress now abuses the Commerce Clause in a way to inhibit or even prohibit trade commerce.

Gonzales v. Raich, 545 U.S. 1 (2005) hinted at the original intent of the Commerce Clause in its decision:


The Commerce Clause emerged as the Framers' response to the central problem giving rise to the Constitution itself: the absence of any federal commerce power under the Articles of Confederation. For the first century of our history, the primary use of the Clause was to preclude the kind of discriminatory state legislation that had once been permissible.


The real problem resides not just with the state legislation, but with the expansion of federal legislation, when it really had no authority to apply that legislation under the "interstate commerce" clause, and a falsely claimed authority beyond that, when in truth the federal government has no constitutional authority to apply legislation within the territory of the States themselves, not anywhere, under any terms.

Madison clarified the original intent of Interstate Commerce in Federalist #42:


“A very material object of this power was the relief of the States which import and export through other States, from the improper contributions levied on them by the latter. Were these at liberty to regulate the trade between State and State, it must be foreseen that ways would be found out to load the articles of import and export, during the passage through their jurisdiction, with duties which would fall on the makers of the latter and the consumers of the former. We may be assured by past experience, that such a practice would be introduced by future contrivances; and both by that and a common knowledge of human affairs, that it would nourish unceasing animosities, and not improbably terminate in serious interruptions of the public tranquility.”


Once again we see the intent of the Interstate Commerce clause being to "make regular" (or "uniform") the commerce between the states, so as to prohibit hostility between them, even preventing a cause for war.  Most certainly the "Civil War" was indeed a "serious interruption of the public tranquility". However the federal government's actual actions leading up to the Civil War were quite contrary to the Founder's intent, with these grossly violating both Congress' constitutional limitations and obligations, and are still creating conflict within the country to this day, even now.

Prior to reaching the "first century" of U.S. history, Congress was already abusing its obligation to "make trade regular" between the states by introducing a series of tariffs and embargoes over more than 20 years that were prejudicial against the South's agriculture, and preferential to budding North's industry, particularly textiles, giving rise to the Civil War.

However the real abuse of the Interstate Commerce clause began after the Civil War opened the floodgates, with the Interstate Commerce Act (1887), and then gross abuse later under the Progressive's expansion with the New Deal (1936) under Roosevelt.

NECESSARY & PROPER CLAUSE (Elastic Clause)

The Necessary and Proper Clause, also known as the "Elastic Clause", is the last of the enumerated powers, and specifically indicates its applicability to only those "foregoing Powers", previously enumerated:

"To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof."

Given the clear and specific reference of applicability being to those "foregoing Powers", the Necessary and Proper clause can not be viewed as any sort of broad, plenary power legitimizing Congress to act on anything it deems to be both "necessary" and "proper" for the nation. .   Many recognize the Necessary and Proper Clause as being the primary means by which the Executive and Legislative branches  have validated their gross overreach of power, resulting in the restriction of rights.

The first test of the Necessary and Proper Clause came in 1791, with Alexander Hamilton's proposal of a national bank,  as Secretary of the Treasury under Washington.   Hamilton defended the bank's legitimacy under the Constitution, indicating that:

“If the end be clearly comprehended within any of the specified powers, and if the measure have an obvious relation to that end, and is not forbidden by any particular provision of the Constitution, it may safely be deemed to come within the compass of the national authority.”

Notice that Hamilton is relying in this argument on the specific negative prohibitions (i.e. "forbidden)  to the federal government, rather than the positive limit of the specifically enumerated powers.  Hamilton is relying on the federal government's  authority to collect taxes, and to expend those taxes in on necessary ends, results in the necessity of a national bank not relying on any private bank.  


Thomas Jefferson, Edmund Randolph and James Madison  were unified in opposition to a national bank both because they did not believe it would be beneficial and because it was not “necessary and proper.”    Jefferson submitted an official cabinate paper to President Washington, at Washington's request:At President Washington’s request:

“I consider the foundation of the Constitution as laid on this ground: That ‘all powers not delegated to the United States, by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States or to the people.’ [XIIth amendment.] To take a single step beyond the boundaries thus specially drawn around the powers of Congress, is to take possession of a boundless field of power, no longer susceptible of any definition. The incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in my opinion, been delegated to the United States, by the Constitution."

“[The Constitution authorizes Congress] to lay taxes to provide for the general welfare of the United States, that is to say, ‘to lay taxes for the purpose of providing for the general welfare.’ For the laying of taxes is the power, and the general welfare the purpose for which the power is to be exercised. They are not to lay taxes ad libitum for any purpose they please; but only to pay the debts or provide for the welfare of the union.”

“They are not to do anything they please to provide for the general welfare, but only to lay taxes for that purpose. To consider the latter phrase, not as describing the purpose of the first, but as giving a distinct and independent power to do any act they please, which might be for the good of the Union, would render all the preceding and subsequent enumerations of power completely useless. It would reduce the whole instrument to a single phrase, that of instituting a Congress with power to do whatever would be for the good of the United States; and, as they would be the sole judges of the good or evil, it would be also a power to do whatever evil they please.”

“Certainly no such universal power was meant to be given them."

Today we suffer under the burden of Congress believing it is no longer limited by the enumerated powers, nowhere recognizing the limitations of those specific powers, instead doing whatever it deems to be "necessary and proper", essentially whatever evil they please,  even resulting in the gross breach and denial of our freedoms.

Dark Days Ahead for the Jews of Russia?  
(blog.standforisrael.org) - As we noted yesterday, The Fellowship continues its Freedom Flights, allowing Ukrainian Jews to make aliyah (immigrate to Israel) to escape the war and anti-Semitism they face in Ukraine...Today, Commentary’s Seth Mandel notes that an all-too-familiar anti-Jewish sentiment is growing in nearby Russia: The ultimate goal of state censorship is self-censorship among the citizenry. If you can get the people to police themselves, and each other, it takes part of the burden off the state and also makes people complicit in their own oppression. And so it’s disturbing to see things take this turn in Putin’s Russia. As the New York Times reports, Moscow bookstores removed from their shelves–voluntarily (sort of)–their copies of Maus, the pathbreaking graphic novel of Nazi crimes against the Jews. It’s the “voluntarily” part of this that stands out, and makes it clear that Putinism has not been, and will not be, good for the Jews of Russia…Putin’s war on Ukraine scattered the remaining Jewish community in the war zone. Palestinians Vote for Iran’s New Ally: Hamas

Sen. Tom Cotton Calls Out ‘Cowardly’ Iranian Foreign Minister  
(gopthedailydose.com) - Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is firing back at comments from Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif about sanctions. In a statement posted on his Senate website, and followed by a series of sharply worded tweets, Cotton goes so far as to call Zarif “cowardly.”...In his statement, Cotton noted that President Barack nObama had “promised sanctions would only be lifted when Iran’s compliance with restrictions on their nuclear program were verified.” However, Zarif has contradicted Obama, issuing his own statement that mentioned Cotton, who had led a group of 47 Senators to sign a letter opposing the deal with Iran unless it was ratified by Congress: If we have an agreement on the 30th of June, within a few days after that, there will be a resolution before the UN Security Council under Article 41 of Chapter 7 which will be mandatory for all member states whether Senator Cotton likes it or not. Another Jewish Charm Offensive Won't Fix What Obama Has Broken

     (jewishworldreview.com) - After several months of insults (chickensh*!t) and threats about re-evaluating U.S. policy, the nObama administration appears to have awakened to the fact that its feud with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has gone too far.
.
       As the New York Times reports, the White House is making a conscious effort to play down its anger at the Israeli government, primarily by making nice with American Jewish groups.
.
       But what is sounding very much like another edition of the Jewish charm offensive that characterized administration statements about Israel during the year preceding President nObama's reelection is not going to fix what has been broken by President nObama and his foreign-policy team.
.
      The problem is an American government that is intent on creating distance between itself and Israel, not misunderstandings rooted in a personality clash between nObama and Netanyahu.
.
       Its only purpose is to disarm Jewish groups and to persuade them to stay quiet during the impending debate about the Iran nuclear deal while still threatening Israel with diplomatic isolation over the Middle East peace process.
.
       As with the reelection year charm offensive, the administration is doing little to mend fences with an Israeli government that it has slandered and undermined. Rather, it is focused on holding the hands of Jewish groups that face the difficult choice between standing up to the president or keeping quiet in order to maintain their access to the White House.
.
       The administration is rightly fearful that its public venting of anger about Netanyahu's opposition to its push for détente with Iran and their insistence on blaming him and not the Palestinian Authority leadership for the latest collapse of the peace process is exposing the rift between much of the Democratic Party and the pro-Israel community.
.
       That doesn't necessarily threaten the Democrats' hold on the Jewish vote in 2016, but nObama isn't really worried about Hilly Clinton's fate right now. What bothers him is the prospect that a critical mass of American Jews will be sufficiently fed up with the president's threats toward Israel and insufficiently sold on the virtues of the Iran deal that they will exert pressure on wavering Democrats to vote against the agreement if it is actually signed and then comes up for a vote sometime this summer.

       That's what's behind the meetings with Jewish groups (though most of those invited to the tête-à-têtes at the White House have been either loyal administration cheerleaders like J Street and other left-wing groups or mainstream organizations that can usually be counted on not to make trouble for the powers that be) and, just as important, leaks from administration sources that lead to articles like the New York Times feature intended to calm the nerves of the paper's liberal Jewish readership.
       Despite the talk of recognition that, in the words of former U.S. ambassador to Israel and veteran peace processor Daniel Kurtzer, "anger was replacing policy," the division between the two countries had little to do with pique on either side of the alliance. The White House temper tantrums about Netanyahu's prickly personality, his acceptance of an invitation to address Congress without bespeaking nObama's permission first, or even some of the things he said in the days before his election victory certainly added to the tensions that have been building for six years. But the real source of the problem lies in policy prescriptions not inadequate personal relations.

.     The president entered office convinced that the U.S. must distance itself from Israel and engage Iran and after years of effort, he finally seems to have accomplished both objectives. To that end, the president has consistently sought to pressure Israel to make concessions and blamed the Jewish state when these efforts failed, as they always have, to entice the Palestinians to make peace.
.
       Consistent Palestinian rejections of peace offers have convinced most Israelis that peace is impossible in the foreseeable future and to reelect Netanyahu, but the administration has reacted to the same facts by seeking more distance between Washington and Jerusalem and overtly threatening to abandon Israel at the United Nations.
.
      Even more ominously, the White House has embraced a new bizarrely Iran-centric policy in the Middle East that has alienated both Israel and moderate Arab nations while negotiating an agreement that, at the very least, establishes Tehran as a threshold nuclear power and gives it two paths to a bomb, one by cheating and the other by waiting until the deal expires.

      Neither of these problems can be papered over by mere meetings or statements. President nObama's disingenuous efforts to convince the country that, despite everything that has happened during his time in office that would convince any objective observer to the contrary, he is true friend of Israel ring false even for many Democrats.
.
      But nObama doesn't need, as he did in 2012, to convince most supporters of Israel that he is one of them. After all that has happened in the last year, let alone the five that preceded it, that isn't going to work despite his avowals of friendship. All he needs is to neutralize the mainstream groups that could make a lot of trouble for him if they decided to go all out to try and defeat an Iran deal that poses a potential mortal threat to the security of the West, regional security, as well as Israel's existence.

      Such an effort on their part might be enough to tip many ostensibly pro-Israel Democrats to oppose the deal even though the president has tried to make support for the deal a test of partisan loyalty.
.
     That's why nObama says he won't meet Netanyahu until after the Iran deal is finalized and approved even if he has to get that approval by stopping Congress from overriding his veto. Supporters of Israel in both the Democratic and Republican parties need to recognize that what is needed are not feel-good meetings but a presidential promise that the final Iran deal will insist on the inspections and other points the Iranians currently refuse to countenance. They should also get guarantees that the president won't stop backing the Jewish state in the United Nations when the Palestinians and their supporters seek recognition for their state without first being required to make peace. .      Anything less than that is a diversionary tactic, not an effort to heal a breach the president has worked so hard to create. .

After all, statistics show that in 2013, there were 2491 black people murdered in the United States and that 2.245 OF those murders were at the hands of other BLACK people and while that stat simply shows murders…here’s something a little more poignant…in 2014…cops killed 414 white people but only 233 BLACK people and yet BLACK people, who comprise just 13% of the U.S. population, are responsible for 42% of all cop killings.

Yesterday, the streets of cities across our nation FILLED with protest marches…BLACK people…PROTESTING black on black violence.

In Atlanta…New York…Detroit…Dallas…Los Angeles…from sea to shining sea…BLACK people took a stand…a long awaited stand…a much NEEDED stand against black perpetrated violence.

Jesse was on the streets of Chicago leading the protests…Al was in Atlanta leading the way and Barack, from a golf course somewhere added HIS voice to the rising chorus of black leaders decrying black violence.

 Lynch Officially Takes Up Holder's Torch  
On Monday, new Attorney General Loretta Lynch was sworn in, formally taking over for the contemptuous Eric Holder. And to say she entered the position amid chaos is an understatement. Gangs throughout Baltimore continued to wreak violence and havoc, injuring police officers and destroying property in protest over the death of Freddie Gray, the circumstances of which are still unknown. In response, one of Lynch's first acts on the job was to send in the troops. "The Department of Justice will send two officials to Baltimore amid clashes in the city between police and citizens," The Hill reports. We wish we could say she will be an improvement over her predecessor, but all evidence suggests she will continue the Holder legacy. loose lips Joe Biden illuminated this concern at Monday's swearing-in ceremony when he said, "[Lynch] is a woman who is incredibly qualified, just like Eric Holder, who I’ve known and has been my close friend for years and years and years, over 30 years." He added, "He might be one of the finest attorney generals [sic] we have had. He has been in this environment of such political hostility. He has stood his ground on principle. He has never yielded. And he has been right." If he was one of the finest attorneys general in American history, why are sights like Ferguson and Baltimore seemingly becoming the norm?  Arguments Begin in Contentious Same-Sex Marriage Case  
Today is a big day for the Supreme Court as the debate over same-sex "marriage" takes center stage. Two and half hours of oral arguments will be presented to the justices, whose decision on America's biggest social controversy since Roe v. Wade will have monumental implications. And just like Roe v. Wade, as Family Research Council's Tony Perkins points out, the government meddling in what should be an issue left to the states isn't going to end the debate. Forty-two years after that dreadful ruling, America has come no closer to unanimously accepting abortion, and the same fate awaits the gay marriage dispute. Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Perkins explained, "The courts are decided to interpret the Constitution and the constitutionality of laws, not create public policy." And as Jennifer Marshall of The Daily Signal reports, some 50 million Americans have voted in support of traditional marriage — only to have the courts silence the majority of them. "Only 11 states have redefined marriage democratically," writes Marshall. "In the 37 states that currently recognize same-sex marriage, 26 have been forced to do so by courts." Today, Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee and Ohio will defend their bans on same-sex marriage against 16 plaintiffs, and a decision will be announced before the Court adjourns in June. The Tenth Amendment states, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."  Russian Hackers Read nObama's Emails  
Regarding the security breach of the White House's computer network, it might be easier to ask what the hackers didn't gain access to. In the early part of April, news broke that a group of hackers — probably with some link to the Russian government — compromised the White House email system and accessed Barack nObama's full schedule. But the White House has remained mum on how deeply the hackers penetrated. According to The New York Times, the hackers were reading some of nObama's unclassified email messages, the ones where he drafted upcoming speeches, worked out upcoming policy, complained about Congress, talked about staffing changes and, yes, even described his golf game. The Times says nObama's account itself was not compromised, nor was the classified email system the White House uses. As Noah Rothman writes at Hot Air, "This administration has a problem with information security, and it's becoming clear that their carelessness is a threat to American national security."  Baltimore Mishandled Seeds of Unrest  
The city of Baltimore is reeling after a savage night of rioting downtown that led to the burning of stores, looting and violent confrontations with police officers. The violence erupted in the hours leading up to and following Monday's funeral of Freddie Gray, who died several days after suffering a spinal cord injury while in police custody. Facts are still hazy about Gray's arrest and injury and just how an initially peaceful demonstration devolved so quickly into full-scale rioting.
          Republican Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency late yesterday and called out the National Guard to assist overwhelmed city law enforcement. "The National Guard represents the last resort in restoring order," Hogan told reporters. "I have not made this decision lightly. 
          Up to 5,000 soldiers could eventually be deployed. There are already at least 100 Maryland State Police officers already in the city, as well as municipal police from surrounding towns and counties. Close to two-dozen Baltimore police officers have sustained injuries in close-quarter confrontations with rioters who assaulted them with rocks, bottles and other objects.
          Schools are closed today in Baltimore, and last night's Orioles game was postponed, with baseball commissioner Rob Manfred suggesting the matchup between the Orioles and Chicago White Sox could be played elsewhere.   -The Patriot Post

 CAN CLINTON COALITION BE REBUILT AMID RACIAL  UNREST?  
Under President nObama, who once offered America the chance for racial healing, the nation is instead experiencing an era of conspicuous racial unrest worse than any in the past 40 years. Like another candidate who ran on ending “nation building” but who launched the most ambitious nation-building project in American history, nObama’s legacy on the subject of race relations will be the opposite of his promise. And as the unrest has grown and now, one hopes, culminated in the burning and looting in Baltimore, the president has mostly been a cipher.
            He condemns violence but sympathizes with its perpetrators. He extolls the service of police officers, but suggests widespread systemic racism in their ranks. It’s complicated, for sure, but the fact that all nObama has produced is a couple of blue-ribbon commissions – Washington’s version of policy euthanasia – shows us a man tested on a core belief and promise and apparently at a loss. Despite the frustration among his supporters, nObama will continue to enjoy enormous support and understanding from black America. But what about his party’s presumptive nominee?    
            Hilly Clinton’s political rise was in part a product of the prior, more severe era of widespread racial unrest. Back when she spoke with an Ozark twang, she and her husband came to the national stage as “New Democrats” – white Southerners, who were moderate and socially conservative. This had particular appeal because of the way the radicalism of the late 1960s and early 1970s had put much of the country off the Democratic brand. And the race riots of the era were a big part of that. If Richard Nixon’s two victories were partly a backlash against urban unrest and Ronald Reagan’s new coalition consolidated such gains, the Clinton Democrats were about trying rebuild the old Democratic coalition.
          Bill Clinton could connect with black voters but put blue-collar white voters at ease. He could be America’s “first black president” but champion welfare limits staunchly opposed by black leaders. He and his wife’s return to the White House, however, was derailed by a politician who no less skillfully bridged the racial divide in the Democratic Party, but did so from the other side of the chasm. Along the way, African American voters grew distrustful of the Clintons and the Clintons, at least Bill, grew resentful of the way black supporters had thrown them over for a “fairy tale” about nObama. It got very ugly. Now, as the Clintons mount another White House quest, the issue of race relations burns far hotter than it did in 2008. So how will they play the issue? So far, Hilly is attempting to channel nObama’s cipher stance – lamenting injustice and calling for healing. But black voters, and white liberals who share their cause, are unlikely to accept opacity on the issue from Clinton. Her top primary rival certainly isn’t going to let her get away with some Twitter sadness as an answer.
           No matter what she does, Clinton will not be able to drive the kind of black turnout and support that nObama enjoyed. But she needs a strong African American showing in her new New Democrat coalition. At the same time, if she overcorrects to the left, she will destroy the fundamental part of her coalition: middle class white voters who are not likely to blame police when they see arson and looting in major American cities. This will be a test for even the most scalene triangulator. nObama was an empty vessel for voters, but there is too much in the Clinton carafe to start afresh.  -Fox News

 IRS watchdog recovers thousands of missing Lois Lerner emails  
(foxnews.com) - The Treasury’s Inspector General for Tax Administration notified the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday that they have recovered thousands of Lois Lerner emails that were not previously produced to Congress, committee members told Fox News...The inspector general recovered approximately 6,400 Lerner emails and will carefully examine them as part of the committee’s bipartisan IRS investigation. The Hill reported that around 650 emails were from 2010 and 2011, while most of them were from 2012. I asked each class if someone could define abortion. Fourteen-year-olds have fully developed brains, but lack nuance. I’d call on a student whose hand was up and he/she would say something like: “Abortion is when a woman is pregnant and she kills the baby inside her.”

That plainly worded definition is typical of 14-year-olds. They’re refreshingly direct. Every year, in every class, the first student I called on would define abortion in almost exactly the same way.

“Does everyone agree with that definition?” I’d ask.
There would be nods all around, and I’d write it on the blackboard. Then I’d explain that people who supported abortion called themselves “Pro-choice” and people who were against it called themselves “Pro-life.” Pointing to the definition, I’d circle the words “kill” and “baby,” then tell them that a seasoned “pro-choice” person would never utter those words in a debate. A pro-life person, however, would nearly always use them. “A definition like that,” I’d say, pointing the board again, “indicates a pro-life bias. I can tell what somebody thinks about abortion by the words they use to define it.” At this point I’d look toward the student who gave it. “Is that your opinion? Are you pro-life?” Usually he or she was, but not always.

Then I’d ask how a pro-choice person would define abortion. Students would ponder what I said and offer suggestions like: “It’s when a woman finds out she’s pregnant and doesn’t want to be, so she goes to a doctor and he takes it out.”

“Not bad,” I’d say. “A pro-choice person would never say ‘baby’ or ‘kill.’ Instead, he or she would use words like ‘fetus’ for ‘baby,’ and ‘remove,’ or ‘terminate’ for ‘kill.’” Then I’d ask if anyone else could craft a pro-choice definition. Eventually I’d get one that sounded just like something out of NARAL literature, such as: “When a woman terminates her pregnancy,” which I’d also write on the board.

Often a student would ask my opinion on abortion at this point, and I’d say, “I’ll tell you after the debate is over.”

Then students chose which side they wanted to argue. If there were too many on one side or the other, I’d try to even them up by challenging some to argue the opposite of what they believed. Some of the sharpest students would usually offer to do so.

After that, I let them sit in their groups to prepare. My instructions were that they start recording their side’s strongest arguments on one list, then record their opponents’ strongest arguments on another.
“Why do you want us to list our opponents’ arguments?” they’d ask.

“So you can prepare counter-arguments to use during the debate when they bring up those points,” I’d answer. “It’s what opposing lawyers would do in a courtroom. You need to research all sides of any issue. As someone said once: ‘You don’t fully understand your own side unless you understand your opponent’s.’”

Then I’d write the names of organizations championing one side and the other, and instruct students to write to them, telling them they’re debating abortion in class, and could they please send materials. For the pro-choice side, I’d give contact information for Planned Parenthood, NARAL America - then called The National Abortion Rights Action League, and NOW - National Organization for Women, etc. For the pro-life side I’d give contacts for the National Right to Life Association and a local, Maine group called the PLEA - Pro-Life Education Association, which always responded right away.

Of course this was during years before students could download information from the internet. They’d have to write away for it and I’d allow time for that, usually a couple of weeks. The PLEA information always came first, maybe because they were in Maine - and they’d always send pictures of just what resulted from abortions at various stages. When those pictures arrived, they’d be shown around before my classes began. Students would come up to me in the hallway with solemn looks and ask me if I’d ever seen pictures of aborted babies.

“Can we use these in the debate?”
“I’ll have to think about that,” I’d respond.

The pictures would be seen by some staff as well. Women, usually teacher aides (now called “ed techs”) who worked in my classroom, would approach me with serious looks just as my students had. “Have you seen the abortion pictures floating around?”

BALTIMORE RIOTS

My brother texted me in Florida reporting from Baltimore, our hometown. He said the thugs have gotten crazy and need to be dealt with. My nephew who is a video journalist said it was appalling witnessing local black ministers arguing over street corners for their group of protesters, jockeying for position for the TV cameras.

A friend called interrupting me watching Bizarre Foods TV show, wanting to know if I was watching the coverage of the Baltimore riots. Upon turning the channel to watch the mainstream media coverage, I had to turn the channel away from it. It was too much to stomach.

All I saw was people behaving badly; from Baltimore's insanely liberal mayor to black talking head liberal operatives spewing idiotic excuses to domestic terrorist thugs turning the city into a war zone.

I thought, I have seen this stupid evil horror movie before (Ferguson) and I “ain't gonna” watch it again.

The media is reporting that some black leaders are calling for peace. Well, I am sorry, but that is too little too late. How do you expect black youths to react to the Left's orchestrated campaign to convince them that white Republicans and conservatives are racist and out to get them; white cops murder them at will, the rich got rich stealing from them and business owners are selfish and evil?

These lies have been sold to black youths by the highest black voices in the country – Obama, Oprah, Democrats, Sharpton, Holder, Jackson, the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus and assorted other race exploiting scumbags. If I sound angry it is because I am.

What was that mantra George's dad on Seinfeld used to keep calm? Oh yeah, he said, “Serenity now! Serenity now!”

Enough with this hogwash that Christians should not get angry. The bad behavior destroying peoples' livelihood in Baltimore and the nuanced response to it should make decent honorable people angry.

The Baltimore riots and other incidents of black mob attacks and assaults on innocent whites across America are the result of the Left's hoax that blacks are victimized in America; perpetrating hate for political gain.  Such evil should make decent Americans angry.

When Jesus turned over the tables of the crooks in the temple, he was angry. Jesus even called evil doers names, “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Jesus pretty much expressed my thoughts regarding modern day black so-called civil rights leaders.

I am not advocating bad behavior from our side. The Bible says, be angry, but sin not. I am advocating that we stop putting up with it. These thugs do this stuff because they can.

I still can not wrap my head around the mayor of Baltimore saying the thugs must be protected and given space “to destroy.”

In essence, the liberal mayor is saying that taxpayer businesses are acceptable collateral damage. I mean, who cares? Most of the trashed businesses are probably owned by rich white racists. Their ancestors probably owned slaves. So, they deserve it.

I am sick of it folks, liberal officials, liberal talking heads and liberal media justifying, tolerating and even celebrating bad behavior.

My brother asked if I noticed that all the blacks heralded as modern day civil rights heroes are criminals? I said, “Great observation grasshopper”, impressed by my low-info-voter brother.

Trayvon Martin was shot while attacking George Zimmerman.  I remembered watching a youtube video of Alabama State marching band honoring the thug, spelling out “Trayvon” on the field. I thought, you have got to be kidding me.

Equally frustrating is that all the black outrage, anger and violence is based on lies. For example. It has been proven that witnesses lied about Michael Brown after robbing a Ferguson convenience store and assaulting the clerk had his hands up in surrender to police. Brown was shot while attacking a police officer.  And yet, from the Grammy Awards to pro football players running out of the tunnel with their hands up, the lie, slander of America's police and hatred was furthered and nurtured.

Serenity now! Serenity now!

Meanwhile, truly extraordinary black role models such as retired black neurosurgeon Dr Ben Carson continue to be rejected and despised by black civil rights leaders. Only blacks who hate America with victim mindsets need apply for membership in their black civil rights movement club.

Blacks angry because of high black unemployment and poor economic conditions need look no further than their messiah (small m), Obama and his job killing policies and mountain of new outrageous regulations.

So please forgive me folks, my blood pressure can not take getting sucked into watching 24/7 sympathetic media coverage of this latest episode of Blacks Behaving Badly, Baltimore edition.

If the mayor of Baltimore and liberal media are going to take a don't-make-the-black-kids-angry approach to dealing with white bystanders being brutalized, businesses being destroyed, looting and chaos in the streets, there is nothing I can do about it. Someone said voters get the government they deserve. Baltimore is notorious for electing liberals.

While I pray for my former hometown, I must emotionally sit this one out.

(Jon Fleischman) - Last month, Oregon Governor Kate Brown received considerable media attention when she put her signature on a new law that automatically registers every licensed driver in the Beaver State to vote...Here in California, newly-minted Secretary of State Alex Padilla is pushing for the state legislature to follow Oregon’s lead. Padilla is supporting a bill, AB 1461, authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), that would, as in Oregon, require that every person with a driver’s license in California be automatically registered to vote. AB 1461 says that a licensed driver would have to affirmatively opt out of being registered in order not to be enrolled automatically. The bill passed its first legislative hurdle yesterday when Assembly Transportation Committee Democrats, on a party-line vote, approved the bill. What a big mistake that is.     (freedomsback.com) - In December, President nObama said that he wished to see Iran ultimately become a “very successful regional power.” His wish — a nightmare for the Western-oriented Arab states — is becoming a reality. Consider:      

     Gulf of Aden: Iran sends a flotilla of warships and weapons-carrying freighters to reinforce the rebels in Yemen — a noncontiguous, non-Persian, nonthreatening (to Iran) Arabian state — asserting its new status as regional bully and arbiter. The nObama administration sends an aircraft carrier group, apparently to prevent this gross breach of the U.N. weapons embargo on Yemen. Instead, the administration announces that it has no intention of doing anything. Meanwhile, it exerts pressure on Saudi Arabia to halt its air war over Yemen and agree to negotiate a political settlement involving Iran.       

     Russia: After a five-year suspension, Russia announces the sale of advanced surface-to-air missiles to Iran, which will render its nuclear facilities nearly invulnerable to attack. nObama’s reaction? Criticism, threats, sanctions? No. A pat on the back for Vladimir Putin: “I’m, frankly, surprised that the embargo held this long.”


     Iran: Last week, nObama pre-emptively caved on the long-standing U.S. condition that there be no immediate sanctions relief in any Iranian nuclear deal. He casually dismissed this red line, declaring that what is really important is whether sanctions can be reimposed if Iran cheats. And it doesn’t stop there. The Wall Street Journal reports that nObama is offering Tehran a $30 billion to $50 billion signing bonus (drawn from frozen Iranian assets) — around 10 percent of Iranian GDP.

      Syria: After insisting for years that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria “step aside,” the U.S. has adopted a hands-off policy toward a regime described by our own secretary of state as an Iranian puppet. .      Iraq: Iran’s Quds Force Commander Qassem Suleimani, director of Shiite militias that killed hundreds of Americans during the Iraq War and were ultimately defeated by the 2007-08 U.S. surge, operates freely throughout Iraq flaunting his country’s dominance. In March, he was directing the same Iraqi militias, this time against the Islamic State — with the help of U.S. air cover.       

     This is the new Middle East. Its strategic reality is clear to everyone: Iran rising, assisted, astonishingly, by the United States.      

     nObama’s initial Middle East strategy was simply withdrawal. He would enter history as the ultimate peace president, ushering in a new era in which “the tide of war is receding.” The subsequent vacuum having been filled, unfortunately and predictably, by various enemies, adversaries and irredeemables, nObama lighted upon a new idea: We don’t just withdraw, we hand the baton. To Iran.      

     nObama may not even be aware that he is recapitulating the Nixon doctrine, but with a fatal twist. Nixon’s main focus was to get the Vietnamese to take over that war from us. But the doctrine evolved and was generalized to deputize various smaller powers to police their regions on our behalf. In the Persian Gulf, our principal proxy was Iran.      

     The only problem with nObama’s version of the Nixon doctrine is that Iran today is not the Westernized, secular, pro-American regional power it was under the shah. It is radical, clerical, rabidly anti-imperialist, deeply anti-Western. The regime’s ultimate — and openly declared — strategic purpose is to drive the American infidel from the region and either subordinate or annihilate America’s Middle Eastern allies.      

     Which has those allies in an understandable panic. Can an American president really believe that appeasing Iran — territorially, economically, militarily and by conferring nuclear legitimacy — will moderate its behavior and ideology, adherence to which despite all odds is now yielding undreamed of success?       

     Iran went into the nuclear negotiations heavily sanctioned, isolated internationally, hemorrhaging financially — and this was even before the collapse of oil prices. After 17 months of serial American concessions, the Iranian economy is growing again, its forces and proxies are on the march through the Arab Middle East and it is on the verge of having its nuclear defiance rewarded and legitimized.      

     The Saudis are resisting being broken to Iranian dominance. They have resumed their war in Yemen. They are resisting being forced into Yemen negotiations with Iran, a country that is, in the words of the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., “part of the problem, not part of the solution.” .      nObama appears undeterred. He’s determined to make his Iran-first inverted Nixon Doctrine a reality. Our friends in the region, who for decades have relied on us to protect them from Iran, look on astonished.
