The critics on the left opposed President Trump’s war in Iran and now a few cranks on the right are upset he ended it too soon. Both sides are wrong. America’s military has performed splendidly and President Trump has wisely decided to declare victory and pursue a settlement that puts pressure on Iran to denuclearize its country and move the regime in the direction of neutrality in the region.

Some object that the regime still exists, in some form, and it is still committed to regional instability. However, its nuclear program is in ruins, and the regime’s hierarchy knows that we know where they are, and that further American bombing is always an option.

Iran, the only country in the world where Shia Islam is the official state religion, is further isolated as a result of the war. It is surrounded by Sunni Arab countries that understand its dangers to the region, especially after Iran attacked them.

The coverage is a rerun of the Vietnam War, when U.S. military forces were defeating the enemy but the media transformed the American victory at Tet in 1968 into a defeat.

Trump can’t win with these people, demonstrating the fact that there is TDS on both sides of the political spectrum on the subject of Iran.

“If it weren’t for me, Israel would not exist today,” Trump has told the publication Axios, and he’s right. Tragically, some supporters of the Jewish state do not understand this fact, and are ganging up on Trump’s plan to end the war. They risk further isolating the Jewish state.

Vice President JD Vance put these people in their place, noting that “Over the last three months, two-thirds of the defensive weapons that have protected your homeland have been built by American hands and paid for by American tax dollars.”

A simple thank you will do.

Vance added, “Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel. And he happens to be the head of state of the world’s superpower.”

I repeat something I said in a previous column: America didn’t go to war against Iran on behalf of Israel. If some supporters of Israel don’t understand this fact, they are putting Israel’s interests above those of the United States.

The only alternative to the Trump proposal to end the war is a massive American ground invasion of Iran, and nobody wants that. Or do they? When you watch critics of Trump on programs on Fox, you get the impression that they DO want more American blood.

On the right, the New York Post has attacked the president with sensational front-page editorials insisting that Trump’s proposal constitutes surrender.  These critics are the new version of liberal newsman Walter Cronkite.

As CBS Evening News anchorman, Cronkite campaigned against the American effort to save Vietnam from communism and attacked President Reagan for his anti-communist and anti-Soviet views. His coverage of Tet helped convince LBJ that the war was unwinnable.

Later in life, as if to confirm his role as an agent of influence against his own government, Cronkite made an appearance before the World Federalist Association, which favors world government financed by global taxes, and called for the U.S. to renounce “some of its sovereignty” and pass a series of United Nations treaties. Then-First Lady Hillary Clinton also appeared, via videotape, to pay tribute to the former CBS Evening News anchorman.

In 1988, Cronkite addressed a left-wing People for the American Way conference and denounced President Reagan for the “unilateral” military actions in Grenada, when the U.S. military evicted a communist gang, and Libya, when Reagan ordered a military strike in retaliation for the acts of terrorism against Americans.

Incredibly, Cronkite said that the smartest president he ever met was Jimmy Carter. The Carter presidency paved the way for the coming to power of the communist Sandinistas in Nicaragua and the Islamic zealots in Iran. Later in life, Carter became an advocate of the interests of the Arab/Muslim world against Israel.

By contrast, President Trump has been the best friend Israel ever had, as Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated.

However, America never went to war for Israel. Equally significant, by any objective measure, Trump’s peace deal is a victory for the United States, militarily and economically. The alternative, to repeat, was a full-scale ground war against the regime, promising thousands of American war dead and wounded warriors.

Haven’t we had enough of that?

The war was an honorable cause but it had limitations, as we saw in the failure of the people to rise up against the regime. Too many Iranians were here in the United States, appearing on shows urging American action, rather than in Iran, organizing a counter-revolution against the Ayatollah.

I remember one dentist I had in Maryland who escaped Iran. Many fled rather than stay and fight. It’s tragic.

One Iranian resistance group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, claims to be working for the collapse of the regime, as well as democratic change. Its president, Maryam Rajavi, said she “welcomed the emerging U.S.-Iran understanding aimed at ending hostilities while asserting that peace poses a greater threat to the survival of the Islamic Republic than military confrontation.”

If true, then “peace” is an opportunity for the people of Iran to fight for themselves, perhaps with outside support.

Senator Roger Marshall notes, “First of all, we’re dealing from such a position of strength that we have broken them militarily and economically — their inflation rate is 70%, their GDP per capita now is equivalent to someone that lives in Haiti, poorest country in this hemisphere. So, I think we’re just in such a much better position of strength. We’ve destroyed their military, their economy, they’re on their knees, they really are.”

If these facts are not acknowledged, the critics are either infected with TDS, biased, or have ulterior motives. I suspect some want Americans to die in a ground invasion of Iran. But Americans have had enough of these bloody American wars in the Middle East.

Like Vance, I suggest that critics of the deal in Israel regroup and rethink their positions. The conduct of a few critics in Israel threatens a reduction of American support for the Jewish state. I am astounded by their attacks on the American President. He is not Jimmy Carter, Joe Biden, or Barack Hussein Obama. He is Donald J. Trump.

Trump Just Slapped Down This Iranian Scheme for Strait of Hormuz!-Posted on Townhall-By Jeff Charles-On June 20, 2026:

President Donald Trump on Saturday affirmed that there will be no tolls in the Strait of Hormuz for the 60 days following the deal established between the U.S. and Iran to allow more time for negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:

“There will be NO TOLLS in the  Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired, unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America, should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both past, present, and future reimbursement of costs.”

Trump’s announcement comes days after he signed a deal with the Iranian regime to curtail the fighting while reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had blocked since shortly after the war began in late February. It also calls for the cessation of fighting in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah and requires the Iranian regime to dilute its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and halt its efforts to get nuclear weapons.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the regime is “not seeking to levy transit tolls; however, fees will be charged in exchange for the services that are provided,” according to The New York Times.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz restarted after the agreement was signed. But the flow of vessels is still below normal levels. Mine clearing teams are working to remove the hazards left during the war. However, there has been some uncertainty over whether the regime will still try to impose tolls despite what the agreement mandates.

Meanwhile, oil prices have finally begun to drop now that the waterway is open again. The waterway carries about 20 percent of the world’s oil and natural gas, as well as other resources. But if Iran imposes fees on traffic through the region, it could slow any relief Americans might get at the gas pump.

President Trump threatened Sunday to resume bombing Iran unless Tehran keeps its Hezbollah allies in Lebanon from attacking Israel.

The president’s dire warning comes just hours after Vice President J.D. Vance arrived in Switzerland to start nuclear talks with the Iranian regime.

“Iran must immediately stop their highly paid proxies in Lebanon from causing trouble,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social. “If they don’t, we will hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!”

Hezbollah and Iran have renewed fighting, threatening to undermine the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Iran. The fighting even delayed peace talks, which began Sunday after initially being scheduled for Friday.

A ceasefire in Lebanon has become a critical focus of the peace talks as Iran has made it one of their key conditions to strike a deal. The memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran declares “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon.”

Fighting between Israel and Lebanon has continued since the memorandum of understanding was signed, bringing the death toll since Israel’s air and ground offensive on March 2 to more than 4,000.

Hezbollah and Lebanon have both demanded a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, with the Lebanese government saying that it should come as part of the U.S.-Iranian negotiations rather than direct talks with Israel.

On Saturday, Iranian officials closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil travels, over Israeli strikes in Lebanon, arguing it violated the ceasefire.

Mr. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistani army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in Switzerland on Sunday. Pakistan has been mediating the conflict in the Middle East.

Sen. Lindsey Graham predicted Sunday that diplomatic talks with Iran over its nuclear program and keeping open the Strait of Hormuz will “fail,” but he noted that negotiations are the better path than taking talks off the table.

“Let’s try a diplomatic solution,” the South Carolina Republican said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” “I think it’s going to fail. What happens next?”

Mr. Graham, a staunch Trump ally who said he spent 4½ hours with the president on Friday, described what he thinks will happen if talks ultimately fail.

“If this deal fails, President Trump is going to take the Strait of Hormuz over by force,” he said. “The United States will control the Strait of Hormuz, we’ll charge a fee for all those who go through to pay for the operation and we’re going to expand the Abraham Accords in calendar year 2026.”

“If Iran contests control of the Strait of Hormuz by the United States, we will obliterate them,” he said.

“So to all of the people listening, if this diplomatic effort fails, President Trump is going to take the Strait of Hormuz. We’re going to run it,” Mr. Graham said. “We’re going to try to get Saudi Arabia to join the Abraham Accords, end the Arab-Israeli conflict in 2026. And if Iran continues to attack Israel and Lebanon, the new policy will be, we’ll hit Iran.”

Mr. Graham’s comments come as Vice President J.D. Vance began talks with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qailbat and Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi at a Swiss mountainside resort near Lake Lucerne. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar were also in the room, helping with negotiations.

The things we cherish often tell us a great deal about who we are.

There are many historical statements of the nature, “Tell me...and I’ll tell you.” Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are. Lavrentiy Beria supposedly said tell me the man, and I’ll tell you his crime. Churchill said that a man is as big as the things that make him angry. And so forth. One might add to the list that one can learn a great deal about a person by what he celebrates.

The U.S. is quickly approaching its 250th birthday. Most normal Americans find this cause for celebration. The U.S. is the freest and richest country in the world, and the two go hand in hand. Without the freedoms and recognition of God-given rights, America would just be another bland Western country like those in Europe. Without the emphasis on property rights and the idea that the money is yours and the government taxes it versus Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment, which means that the government owns everything and gives you a bit of the goodies, the U.S. would not have trillion-dollar corporations. Rags to riches, legal immigrant to millionaire, are common stories in the U.S. Does everybody make it? Nope. For every Apple, there are a hundred companies that tried but did not make it. Facebook made it; MyCrowd not so much.

It was telling last week when the Obamas formally opened their penitentiary on Chicago’s South Side. Valerie Jarrett reappeared to address the convocation. She knee-jerkedly started with a “land acknowledgment” for about half of the tribes that once lived in Illinois. This is the great weakness of the Left. If you really believe that you swiped the land from the true Indian owners, then give it back. Imagine the headlines if Obama had handed a deed of ownership to a local tribe chief. But the Left says a lot of words but never means any of it. It was once your land, but it’s ours now. We’ll just “acknowledge” and hang on to the valuable property. They wax philosophic on illegal aliens but would never let them near their homes. They babble about being the Party of Science but ignore all scientific facts related to COVID, its origin, trans mania, and climate hocus-pocus. The Left talks a good game, but they don’t believe a word of what they say. Our caring socialist senators Sanders and Warren fly private so as to feel one with the crowds they bamboozle.

So while Americans celebrate the U.S., what do Palestinians, Hezbollah terrorists, and Iranian mullahs celebrate? The death of Jews, Christians, and the West. Have you ever heard anything positive come from a Hamas or Palestinian Authority official? It’s always complaints and demands. “The Israelis stole our land! They owe us big time!” They have nothing positive about them. Their goals are to kill Jews and destroy Israel. When Hamas and its buddies murdered over a thousand Jews in southern Israel, in many quarters, there was much rejoicing. While normal people around the world were aghast at the torture, rape, and murder, Palestinians and their lefty flunkies, Muslims and their Woke Right toadies rejoiced. Some came out to say how thrilled they were. Others kept a lower profile but at times gave a glimpse into their joy in seeing so many Jews not just dead but being murdered in such a horrendous fashion. We celebrate life, and Israel is known to add features to U.S. fighters that further help protect and save pilots. They celebrate death and name streets and squares after people who blew up innocents going about their daily activities.

What we celebrate is a reflection of who we are as individuals and as a nation. When word percolated through that the second F-15 pilot had been found and safely removed with all U.S. forces from Iran, we rejoiced. Out of a country of 330 million, isn’t a single pilot just a rounding error? No. He is a cherished member of the U.S. military, and an entire country became his second cousin while waiting to hear that he was alive and out of danger. When I was a kid, and they liked to terrify us about the Red Army and the Chinese People’s Army, they would tell us that the latter would clear a minefield by running soldiers through it. While I can’t say if that was official CCP doctrine, it seems that life in the communist world was never valued as it was in the West. The U.S. built a “nuclear airplane” but never turned on the reactor. Due to the heavy shielding, the project was not practical. The Russians also built such a plane and did turn on the reactor. They didn’t have much shielding, and their pilots died some years after flying the beast for its first and only flight.

There was a time when my wife worked in a governmental ministry. Friday in Israel is generally not a workday. A friend called to say that there was a sick boy who needed to get to Switzerland for medical treatment but did not have a passport. My wife called her boss, who immediately went to the office, where she met the family and produced an Israeli passport on the spot. Normally, one waits a few weeks for such a document to arrive. Not in this case. The boss did not know the family, and she didn’t owe my wife any particular favors. She understood that she could take an action that could save a life, and that possibility was more important than her day off at home. Americans would do the same in a heartbeat. We see it all of the time when Americans give of themselves selflessly for others. The Cajun Navy? That is about as American as it gets.

Watching some of the reactions of Europeans visiting the U.S. for the World Cup has been entertaining. On the one hand, they seem to be having a great time, enjoying American hospitality and standing in awe of Costco and the size of meat portions they receive at restaurants. On the other hand, one gets the impression that they have been sold an image of the U.S. that was so negative that their shock results from waking up from what they had been told for so many years. Trump is Hitler! His supporters are fascists! America is an evil country that boots poor, unfortunate Mexicans for no reason. Then they meet real Americans and are dumbfounded at how nice they are. The World Cup has been a great opportunity for America to showcase its beauty, wonderful citizens, and great prices to the world. I saw an army of Japanese tourists at Walmart. Nobody had to worry about somebody walking out of the store with unpaid goods.

So let us actively celebrate the United States of America. I don’t pretend to be a world traveler, but visiting a country is not the same as living in one. I am partial to the U.S., and I still believe that one would be hard-pressed to find a better country. Elon Musk’s story may be unique, but in some ways it is not. He came to the U.S. with little money to his name. He leveraged his exquisite capabilities and the opportunities available to him in his new country not only to become the richest person in the world (by about $700 billion over the next guy) but also to bestow upon us amazing cars, reliable rockets, useful tunnels, and revolutionary brain implants. America is not perfect, but I have never heard that something or someone has to be perfect to be appreciated or celebrated. Here is to another 250 years of American exceptionalism and success!

Bill Maher used his closing monologue on Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time” to argue that Democrats have surrendered the flag to Republicans — and that only honest patriotism, not tactical displays, can win it back.

The comedian and host told his audience that Americans across the political spectrum should be more enthusiastic heading into the nation’s 250th birthday. Rejecting the idea that celebrating the country amounts to endorsing President Trump, Mr. Maher warned against blurring the distinction between the president and the republic itself.

“That’s what wannabe authoritarians do,” he said. “Don’t be an accomplice.”

Mr. Maher acknowledged concerns about threats to democratic norms — including what he called “creeping authoritarianism” and the politicization of law enforcement — but argued those concerns do not justify abandoning pride in the country’s founding ideals. He pointed specifically to the American system of checks and balances as something worth celebrating this Fourth of July, even if that system is “taking on water.”

The host drew a contrast with his own youth during the 1976 bicentennial, recalling that he wore a patriotic T-shirt that whole summer and that nobody interpreted it as an endorsement of Richard Nixon. Liberals at the time, he argued, did not concede patriotism to the right. He invoked Abbie Hoffman, the 1960s radical who appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in an American flag shirt, as an example of the defiant patriotism he believes the left has abandoned. The most threatening message to authoritarians, Mr. Maher said, is not that America is broken, but that it belongs to everyone.

His sharpest criticism was reserved for what he described as Democrats’ habit of reviving patriotic rhetoric only when it is electorally useful. He said the party seems to recall the flag for roughly an hour every election cycle at its convention — citing Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 speech as an example — before reverting to treating patriotism as an embarrassment.

“You can’t take back the flag in an hour if the rest of the time you treat patriotism as something vaguely embarrassing,” Mr. Maher said.

The remarks continued a theme Mr. Maher has pressed with increasing urgency. Last year, he warned that Democrats face a “serious problem” on patriotism after polling from the Harvard Kennedy School found that fewer than one in four Democrats under 30 said they were proud to be American, compared with three in four young Republicans.

Friday’s episode also featured a one-on-one interview with Sam Levinson, creator of HBO’s “Euphoria,” and a panel discussion with Rep. Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, and Jonathan Martin, senior political columnist for Politico.
