In the ongoing case of the exploding narco-terrorists, President Donald Trump has once again been blessed by the low character of his enemies. And I don’t mean the narco-terrorists themselves. I mean the Trump-deranged Democrats who’ve been forced to defend the indefensible.
Take Connecticut’s Jim Himes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee. As he put it to the Autopen President’s erstwhile paid liar Jen Psaki: “What you need to do is you need to see two terrified men clinging to the wreckage of a ship. And these men are not, this is not Pablo Escobar out there, on a, on a, on a boat. Um, y'know, these are guys that probably didn’t have a lot of economic opportunity, and made a terrible decision to participate in the drug trade.”
So you see, these hapless drug smugglers are really no different than the poor schlub who picks your lettuce.
Here, I’m reminded of all the suicide bombers who probably didn’t have a lot of economic opportunity, either, and who probably just made a terrible decision to detonate themselves on behalf of The Religion of Peace™.
Speaking of self-harm, the Democrats have been committing one act of ballistic podiatry after another in their ongoing war with Trump. How so? By reflexively taking one suicidal policy position after another — from defending criminal illegal alien trannies to defending narco-terrorists.
As I pointed out a few months back, Trump has perfected a common-sensical two-step process for political success. First, by virtue of his mere existence, he’s forced the Never Trumpers and the Democrats to hate his guts; and second, he’s unearthed and embraced the issues that are wildly popular with the American people — the 60-40 and 70-30 and 80-20 issues — and thereby forced his political opponents to paint themselves into one emotively unhinged electoral corner after another. All just to spite Trump.
The result? Democrats have come out against closing the border, against getting rid of the criminal illegal aliens, against rooting out government waste, against getting rid of ridiculous foreign aid, and in favor of men competing against women in sports.
So hate-filled are the Democrats toward Trump that they’ll defend Hamas if Trump defends Israel’s right to exist.
As our Nate Jackson noted last week, Congress has set the parameters for how we handle drug traffickers and how we handle terrorists — with no overlap. But Trump is arguing — rightly, I believe — that there should be overlap because both of these entities pose very real and very deadly threats to the American people.
Just as Clausewitz called war a continuation of policy by other means, these deadly drugs are a continuation of war by other means. And the war is being conducted by the narco-terrorists — and by China — against the American people.
But that’s not how another Democrat, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, sees it. “Everything that they’ve done has been illegal,” she shrieks. “It’s illegal under international law, it’s illegal under the Geneva Convention, and it certainly is even illegal under domestic law. It was essentially murder with that double-tap strike. It is a war crime. It’s illegal. However you put it, it’s all illegal.”
Republican Senator Tom Cotton sees things differently. “Any boat loaded with drugs that is crewed by associates and members of foreign terrorist organizations that are trying to kill American kids, I think, is a valid target,” he said. “I’m not just comfortable with it, I want to continue it.”
Donald Trump is a businessman. And businessmen become successful by solving other people’s problems. The flow of illegal drugs into our country is a deadly problem for the American people, and Donald Trump is attempting to solve it on our behalf.
Concerning the Democrats’ defense of the narco-terrorists and their knee-jerk persecution of the man whose administration is literally saving American lives, I’m reminded of Jack Nicholson’s Colonel Jessup from “A Few Good Men.” While the movie is pure Hollywood melodrama, and while its characters are mostly caricatures, the film’s climactic moment hits all of us who appreciate the awesome burdens and responsibilities of the American presidency.
As Jessup dismissively puts it to the idealistic JAG Corps lawyer: “I would rather you just said ‘thank you,’ and went on your way.”

President Trump may be the alleged drug boat destroyer, but he has a long way to go before he tops the drone warrior.
Mr. Trump’s campaign against those he says are drug couriers is garnering headlines, but it’s also sparking comparisons to President Obama’s drone mission to kill people he identified as terrorist targets, including an American citizen overseas.
Mr. Obama’s death toll, figured to be in the high hundreds or even low thousands, is well above the 83 presumed kills from strikes on suspected drug boats, though Mr. Trump is quickly adding to his numbers.
Untroubled by the deaths, Mr. Trump said he is certain that those on the boats deserved to be killed.
“We know everything about them,” he said.
Mr. Obama also privately celebrated his death toll.
“Turns out I’m really good at killing people. Didn’t know that was gonna be a strong suit of mine,” Mr. Obama told senior aides in 2011, according to the book “Double Down” by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.
The comparison has put a spotlight on members of Congress who either defended or were largely silent about Mr. Obama’s strikes in the Middle East but are now harshly critical of Mr. Trump’s actions in the Caribbean and Pacific.
Congressional Democrats say the chief difference is that Mr. Obama was acting as part of the global war on terrorism. In the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks, Congress passed a resolution authorizing the president to use military force too root out al Qaeda.
“They were all tied into the 9/11 war authorization, where Congress voted to go after non-state terrorist organizations. So the drone strike on a boat — it’s a similar use of a kinetic activity, but it’s not congressionally authorized. And I just feel like anything like this that’s not congressionally authorized is legally suspect,” Sen. Tim Kaine, Virginia Democrat, told The Washington Times.
Mr. Obama and Mr. Trump are part of a long line of presidents who have kept Congress at arm’s length while leading military action. In addition to the drone strikes, Mr. Obama sent U.S. forces to conduct airstrikes on Libya and placed troops on the ground amid Syria’s civil war.
“Those who appear ‘troubled’ by videos of military strikes on designated terrorists have clearly never seen the Obama-ordered strikes or, for that matter, those of any other administration over recent decades,” said Rep. Rick Crawford, Arkansas Republican and chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
“I call upon them to remember their own silence as our forces conducted identical strikes for years — killing terrorists and destroying military objectives the same as in this strike — and ask themselves why they would seek to attack our forces today,” Mr. Crawford said.
Charlie Dunlap, a law professor at Duke University and a former Air Force deputy judge advocate general, pointed all the way back to Thomas Jefferson, who sent warships to attack the Barbary pirates without first obtaining congressional approval.
Jefferson later sought approval retrospectively.
Mr. Dunlap said not enough information is known about Mr. Trump’s strikes on alleged drug boats.
“We do not have sufficient public information to definitively conclude, one way or another, on the legality of the boat strikes,” he wrote on social media.
Other legal scholars question the actions of both Mr. Obama and Mr. Trump.
“Our country has become much too ready to conduct operations without the clearest congressional authorization than it should be and when there was no direct and imminent danger to the homeland,” said Eugene Fidell, who teaches military justice at Yale Law School.
Still, he said any comparison to Mr. Obama shouldn’t be seen as a justification for Mr. Trump.
“The fact that prior administrations may have engaged in questionable uses of force is water over the dam and should not distract the country from the continuing current operation.”
Mr. Trump’s campaign against drug traffickers came under heightened scrutiny after reports, now confirmed, of a Sept. 2 “double-tap,” killing two crew members who survived the initial missile strike on their boat.
The White House said Adm. Frank M. “Mitch” Bradley, the head of U.S. Special Operations Command, correctly issued the order for that second strike.
“[Defense] Secretary [Pete] Hegseth authorized Adm. Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “Adm. Bradley worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated.”
Sen. Mark R. Warner, Virginia Democrat, told The Times that the administration is simply passing the blame to Adm. Bradley.
“The administration seems to be throwing him under the bus, and I think that’s pretty despicable,” Mr. Warner said.
Mr. Obama had a crisis moment after a drone strike in 2011 assassinated Anwar al-Awlaki, an American Yemeni cleric. The Obama administration said he was a legitimate target because of his association with al Qaeda.
Courts dismissed lawsuits, including one from the American Civil Liberties Union, challenging the administration’s authority to kill U.S. citizens without due process.
Sen. Mark Kelly, an Arizona Democrat who has been critical of the Trump strikes, told The Times he was unaware of al-Awlaki.
Yet he was firm in his belief that the double-tap strike in September crossed the line.
“When you have shipwrecked crew members, there is a duty to rescue them, and that if you restrike them and kill them, that is against the law,” said Mr. Kelly, a retired Navy captain.
Mr. Kaine defended the Obama administration’s al-Awlaki kill by saying it was “pursuant to a congressional authorized war against non-state terrorist groups.”
“He was an American citizen, but he had chosen to associate himself with terrorist groups against whom Congress had declared war,” he said.
Kyle Shideler, director and senior analyst for homeland security and counterterrorism for the Center for Security Policy, saw little difference from a tactical standpoint between how the U.S. “would approach striking drug boats, versus how we would approach striking a caravan of known or suspected jihadist terrorists.”
He said drone strikes were alternatives to capturing terrorism suspects, which was not attractive to the Obama administration. It was rushing to empty the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
“They had a policy where they did not want to take a terrorist prisoner because that would require sending them to Guantanamo, which they were trying to close,” Mr. Shideler said.
“So they went away from capture missions, which would have required them taking somebody prisoner, and then you could send them to Guantanamo, get interrogation and get intelligence from them. And in order to further their effort, they went almost wholly to ‘We’re just going to do drone strikes.’”
He added, “Now [Democrats] are complaining that the U.S. military didn’t pick up some narco-terrorists after a strike.”
Mr. Shideler said there is a “difference in the sense that there was an authorization for the use of military force to go after any entity associated with the 9/11 attacks,” but the Trump administration has implied that “they believe this is an inherent part of their Article II powers of the president.”
Brenner Fissell, who teaches military and national security law at Villanova University, said the 2001 authorization to use force against terrorists around the globe didn’t excuse all the strikes.
“The only difference is Obama had some congressional authority to fight Al-Qaeda through the AUMF. But the drone strikes were illegal in a number of cases because they killed U.S. citizens, as in Al-Awlaki, without due process, or they killed an excessive number of civilians who should not have been targeted, or who should have been taken into account when making the targeting decision.”

President Trump’s Republican allies in Congress responded Sunday to concerns from lawmakers in both parties that a U.S. Navy commander’s decision to launch a second strike on a capsized boat spotted with two survivors could constitute a war crime.
Sen. Tom Cotton, Arkansas Republican, said the Sept. 2 strike was a legal operation against a boat that was loaded with narcotics and bound for the U.S. He said the military has been ordered to strike such boats, crewed by associates or members of foreign terrorist organizations that are trying to kill Americans.
“Before our military conducts such a strike, they have multiple sources of intelligence. They give high confidence that everyone on that boat is a foreign drug trafficker, not an innocent civilian who is being ‘human trafficked,’ for instance,” Mr. Cotton said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Illinois Democrat, accused the Trump administration of sanctioning a war crime in the follow-on attack in September that killed two survivors of a destroyed vessel.
“It was essentially murder with that ‘double-tap’ strike,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “If a pilot bails out and he’s in a rubber dinghy in the middle of the ocean, under all international laws of warfare, you are supposed to help render aid to that individual.”
Republican Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have also been sharply critical of the Sept 2 incident.
During a speech at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum on Saturday, Mr. Hegseth stood by the admiral’s decision to launch a second strike. He said the days of foreign “narco-terrorists” operating freely near the U.S. borders are over.
He called them “the al Qaeda of our hemisphere.”
“We are hunting them with the same sophistication and precision that we hunted al Qaeda,” Mr. Hegseth said. “We’re tracking them, we’re killing them, and we’ll keep killing them so long as they are poisoning our people with narcotics so lethal that they’re tantamount to chemical weapons.”
Mr. Hegseth said detailed intelligence work informs whether U.S. naval warships will target suspected drug boats. Intelligence helps determine where the vessels are originating, who is piloting them and, most important, what cargo they are hauling.
“At the top of all this, the president has designated these as terror organizations, poisoning and threatening the American people, making them a target, just like al Qaeda,” he said.

Mr. Cotton said it was simply not the case that U.S. forces were ordered to kill helpless survivors of the initial attack.
“They were not floating in the ocean on a wooden plank or in life jackets. They were on the capsized vessel. They were not incapacitated in any way,” he said. “It was entirely appropriate to strike the boat again to make sure that its cargo was destroyed.”
Rep. Adam Smith of Washington, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, viewed the same video of the “double tap” mission as his Republican colleagues but drew a dramatically different conclusion.
“The boat was clearly incapacitated. A tiny portion of it remained capsized, the bow of the boat,” he said on ABC News’ “This Week.” “They had no communications device, [and] certainly they were unarmed.”
White House claims that the drugs had somehow survived the initial attack were “hard to square” with the images on the surveillance tape, Mr. Smith said.
“The boat was adrift. It was going where the current was going to take it, [and] these two were trying to figure out how to survive,” he said.
Mr. Hegseth said the first strike mission lasted 30 to 40 minutes. He was satisfied that any legal questions had been satisfactorily answered. He left before Adm. Bradley ordered the second strike.
“A couple of hours later, I was told, ‘Hey, there had to be a re-attack because there were a couple of folks who could still be in the fight [with] access to radios,’” he said. “There was a link-up point with another potential boat. Drugs were still there, [and] they were actively interacting with them.”
Mr. Hegseth said he agreed that the second strike was appropriate. Anyone with experience in Afghanistan or Iraq over the past 20 years knows that follow-on strikes on enemy positions on the battlefield aren’t uncommon.
“I fully support that strike. I would have made the same call myself,” he said. “In this particular case, it was well within the authorities of Adm. Bradley, who is an incredible American.”
He said U.S. forces have launched dozens of similar strikes using the same criteria. The Pentagon is reviewing the video of the Sept. 2 secondary strike to protect any potential intelligence sources and methods before it could be released to the public.
Mr. Smith said he believes the Trump administration is reluctant to release the video because it doesn’t want the public to learn firsthand what happened with the second strike.
“And is this really about drugs, or is it about regime change in Venezuela? Are we about to go to war with Venezuela?” Mr. Smith said. “The president has alluded to that repeatedly over the course of the last several weeks, couple of months now. That too, I think, would be very, very bad for the national security interests of our country.”
Sen. Eric Schmitt, Missouri Republican, said President Trump is well within his authority to “blow narco-terrorists out of the water.”
Congress delegated the authority for the White House to designate terrorist organizations, which he has done, Mr. Schmitt said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“He sent a letter to Congress saying he’s going to initiate these strikes,” Mr. Schmitt said. “We’ve had regular briefings about it, including from Secretary of State [Marco] Rubio and high-ranking officials in the Department of Defense.”
He said Democratic opposition to the strikes on suspected drug boats is based on their goal to oust Mr. Hegseth from the Pentagon.
“That’s what this whole thing’s been about. They didn’t want him confirmed, [and] they don’t want a ‘realist’ in place,” Mr. Schmitt said. “We have core national interests at stake: the homeland and the Western Hemisphere and the rise of China. That’s what this administration is about.”

If Donald Trump flirted with the “birther” controversy, Dr. Terry Lakin, then a lieutenant colonel in the US Army, took it as seriously as a truck bomb. In 2010, this much honored, 17-year veteran and father of three questioned why he had to produce his birth certificate to be deployed overseas if the commander-in-chief sending him did not.
Despite exhausting every legal avenue available to him—including letters, filings, and attempts to seek judicial clarity—the system refused to engage. That left Lakin in the position of either acting against his oath or standing by it. He chose the latter, fully understanding the personal risk. “I ultimately believed that civil disobedience was the only remaining path consistent with fidelity to the Constitution,” says Lakin.
Given his commitment to reason and lawful dissent, Lakin has reacted with disgust at the behavior of the so-called “Seditious Six” From his perspective, the six Democrat members of Congress, all with military or intelligence backgrounds, “called for military personnel and federal employees to disobey President Trump’s constitutional authority—without citing any specific unlawful action.” He considers their actions “profoundly dangerous.”
Lakin, by contrast, proceeded with caution, finally taking the one bold step he thought might force the president to respond. He conditioned his second deployment to Afghanistan on Obama’s willingness to produce his birth certificate.
”In taking that stand,” says Lakin, “I accepted the full weight of the consequences.” For his efforts, Lakin was court-martialed, thrown out of the military, stripped of all benefits, and shipped in chains, literally, to the Army’s Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Fort Leavenworth.
The media barely noticed. Those who did, such as Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, attributed Lakin’s “craziness” to his “biases about race and religion.” What else could have motivated him? Dowd concluded her mocking assessment of Lakin’s gesture with “one big truth.” Wrote Dowd, “President Obama doesn’t have to show Terry Lakin anything. The colonel should have followed orders.” The media had finally found a military protestor they did not like.
Obama had not been showing anyone anything for the previous two years. In fact, it was respected Democrat Philip Berg, a former deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania, who filed the first suit challenging Obama’s eligibility. Others followed.
A diligent researcher, Lt. Col. Lakin knew about the holes in Obama’s birth narrative, knew about the Berg suit, and knew Obama’s attorneys at Perkins Coie, the sponsors of the Steele dossier, had invested considerable time and money fighting all efforts to get at the facts of the case. Lakin believed the oath he took as an officer in the U.S. Army to defend the Constitution mandated that he seek the truth. If Maureen Dowd knew what Lakin knew, she might not have dismissed him as crazy or denounced him for not following orders.
When I asked Lakin what drove him to do what he did, he told me of an exchange that occurred during his intake assessment at Leavenworth. The psychologist asked him why he thought Obama was born outside the United States.
Lakin corrected the psychologist. He explained that he did not know where Obama was born or whether he was eligible to be president. The problem, he informed the psychologist, was that no one did. Mainstream journalists like Dowd had refused to do their job. As a result, concerned citizens like Lakin knew more about the president’s background than did the naïfs in America’s newsrooms.
Lakin was down to his last two weeks in prison in April 2011 when Obama produced at least a facsimile of the long form birth certificate that Trump and others had been asking to see. After considerable study, Lakin, like most who have researched the document, thought it a likely forgery. Still, Lakin wonders why the Obama White House, knowing the ordeal he and his family were about to face, did not produce the document before his court martial.

If Obama didn’t care, neither did the media. During those years they treated military dissidents as pariahs. The public took their cues. After his release from Fort Leavenworth, Lakin attempted to secure his Kansas medical license, only to be denied based solely on the conviction. He ultimately found work in Colorado where he became partner and Vice President of the Board at Southern Colorado Clinic. He has since moved back to Wichita, and happily, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts has recently granted him an unrestricted medical license.
Now, Dr. Lakin is seeking a pardon. If any president can sympathize with Lakin’s plight it is surely Trump. On April 27, 2011, Obama commanded network time for no greater purpose than to humiliate Trump. In presenting the birth certificate his Perkins Coie attorneys allegedly retrieved from Hawaii, Obama said, “We’re not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by sideshows and carnival barkers.”
Obama did not have to name the carnival barker. The media knew he meant Donald Trump. From his cellblock at the US Army Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Lieutenant Colonel Lakin winced when Obama added, “We do not have time for this kind of silliness.” Is that what it was, Lakin wonders, silliness? If so, why did Obama waste three years and millions in legal fees to suppress the truth?
In retrospect, Obama may have wished he had. Many believe that this attempt at public humiliation goaded Trump into running for president. And one day soon it may be Obama who is asking for the pardon.
