Pakistan works to broker U.S.-Iran peace as Washington’s economic pressure campaign continues!-Posted on The Washington Times-By Vaughn Cockayne, The Washington Times-On August 25, 2026:
Pakistani officials met with key Iranian officials on Tuesday in an attempt to broker a peace agreement between Tehran and Washington, even as the Trump administration ramps up its economic pressure campaign against the Islamic republic.
Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi traveled to Tehran on Monday for a whirlwind visit that included meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Notably, Mr. Munir also met with Mohsen Rezaei, a member of the Supreme National Security Council and a top advisor to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and delivered a U.S. peace proposal. The scheme would end the U.S. naval blockade and remove sanctions in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending Iranian proxy attacks in the region.
Mr. Munir also reportedly urged a total return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the peace agreement brokered by Pakistan and signed by the U.S. and Iran in June. The agreement, which proposed sanctions relief, reopened the strait and instituted a regional ceasefire, has been effectively dead since July, when the two nations restarted hostilities.
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry, said on Tuesday that the meetings were focused on bilateral relations and had reached “one of their strongest stages.”
Iran has not issued a formal response to the reported U.S. proposal, and it remains unclear if Mr. Munir plans to deliver a response to Washington.
The trip by the Pakistani delegation is the second of its kind this month after Mr. Munir previously traveled to Tehran in early August to revive peace talks and push for a return to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Mr. Munir and Mr. Araghchi also held at least two phone calls in the lead-up to this week’s meetings.
Still, despite the diplomatic overtures from each side, it’s unclear whether the meeting will move the needle on U.S.-Iran relations as Washington pushes to isolate Tehran economically and the Islamic republic vows retaliation.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an expansion of secondary sanctions on Monday, warning countries that trade with Iran will be cut off and face serious consequences.
“Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” he said. “Iran now faces a very clear choice with only two paths before them: complete global isolation and a subsistence economy, or a path back to normalcy with an opportunity to rejoin the global economy.”
However, Mr. Bessent’s announcement offered few details on exactly what the U.S. would do to countries maintaining economic relations with Iran, likely intending to warn potential violators. He confirmed that President Trump was calling world leaders to warn them of the consequences if they did not comply with the directive, but did not clarify which ones.
When asked why the U.S. wouldn’t just impose sanctions on countries trading with Iran immediately, Mr. Bessent implied that such a move would “blow up the global financial system.”
Indeed, sanctions experts say that unless the U.S. targets large financial institutions in China and elsewhere, the effects of the new round of sanctions are likely to be heavily muted.
“Bessent spoke as if he just discovered things that have been known for decades now and that he’s authorized actions in turn that have also been done for decades,” Richard M. Nephew, senior research scholar at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs, told The Washington Times.
“To demonstrate that this is at all meaningful, they need to do actual things, like targeting banks in China, Turkey, etc. that may have connections with Iran. More threats, and vague ones at that, aren’t meaningful in the slightest.”
China remains one of Iran’s closest trading partners, purchasing the vast majority of its oil exports and providing Tehran with one of its few links to the world economy through its state-run banking system.
The Treasury Department designated more than 60 entities and ordered Bank Melli Iran to shut down, but Chinese state banks were largely spared.
If U.S. sanctions hit Chinese banks hard and cut them off from the U.S. dollar system, it could undermine the dollar’s centrality in global trade and, in turn, the power of Western sanctions.
Emily Kilcrease, senior director of the Energy, Economics and Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, said removing Chinese banks from the U.S. dollar system is the “nuclear option.”
“They are the largest banks in the world, and they facilitate China’s trade with the world,” Ms. Kilcrease told the Times. “And so you have to keep in mind that if you sanction one of those Chinese banks, you’re going to have a damaging effect on overall global financial stability by taking out one of the major institutions in a very disruptive, abrupt way.”
U.S. economic pressure has only ramped up during Mr. Trump’s second term, but has reached a fever pitch during the war with the naval blockade. Iran’s gross domestic product has contracted by nearly 3% this year, annual inflation has inched above 57.7% and the rial fell to a record low of roughly 1.9 million per U.S. dollar by late April.
Still, Iranian officials remain adamant that the mounting economic issues facing their country will not result in economic collapse and that the U.S. will face more intense consequences if it continues its campaign.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf insisted on Tuesday that the economic pressure campaign will fail, just like “America was defeated by Iran in the military and political war.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced secondary sanctions Monday targeting businesses that maintain relationships with Iran as the Trump administration ramps up its efforts to economically isolate the Islamic regime.
The new sanctions are intended to force businesses and countries to sever their remaining economic ties to Tehran and facilitate a faster collapse of the Iranian economy. The goal is ambitious, given Iran’s proven ability to withstand financial pressure from Western nations.
Speaking at a news conference, Mr. Bessent said the U.S. military operation had created the conditions for the administration to wage economic pressure against Iran. He insisted that the sanctions would further isolate Tehran from the world economy.
“Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” he said. “Iran now faces a very clear choice with only two paths before them: complete global isolation and a subsistence economy, or a path back to normalcy with an opportunity to rejoin the global economy.”
The new sanctions, dubbed Operation Economic Outcast, specifically target Iran’s ability to exploit digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping, Mr. Bessent said. The determinations build on earlier Treasury actions targeting Iran’s financial, petroleum and petrochemical sectors.
Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control is also sanctioning more than 60 individuals, entities and vessels for assisting Iran in obtaining nuclear material, conducting cyber operations and generating oil revenue, Mr. Bessent said.
The Trump administration also suspended licenses previously authorized by the Treasury, thereby restricting remittance payments to Iran and Iranian participation in U.S. cultural and academic exchanges. It also warned shipping companies that they could face sanctions if they complied with Iranian demands in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials have repeatedly threatened to charge tolls on commercial vessels in the strait under the guise of “service fees.”
Mr. Bessent said President Trump was calling world leaders to insist that they work to sever all financial ties with Iran or risk facing severe consequences. When pressed, Mr. Bessent declined to clarify which leaders Mr. Trump was calling.
However, he indicated that the United Arab Emirates, which publicly suspended its trade relationship with Iran last week, was a positive sign.
“The president is making phone calls to world leaders with specific requests to cease their interactions with the regime,” he said. “We are already seeing results. Over the weekend, comments from Iranian leadership clearly acknowledged the effect of this campaign.”
Mr. Bessent also indicated that an unidentified financial institution would face sanctions “by the end of this week.”
Mr. Trump announced last week that a sweeping new economic campaign — which he termed an “economic D-Day” — was coming, and Mr. Bessent separately expanded on that framing in a Sunday op-ed in the Financial Times, previewing a new round of sanctions intended to move the pressure campaign into its next and most intense stage.
The sanctions add to an already suffocating set of tactics, including a comprehensive naval blockade of Iran’s ports, which aims to eliminate Tehran’s ability to export its oil.
Iran for decades has avoided a total economic collapse through a sophisticated network of land and sea smuggling routes that has enabled it to remain a global player in international energy markets and to coordinate with its small collection of allies.
It was unclear whether the new sanctions, and indeed the transition from military operations to economic pressure, would force the Iranian regime to fold. Iranian officials have insisted that Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is causing far greater economic pain than the U.S. sanctions and that Washington would be the first to cave.
“We’ve been down the maximum pressure road with Iran many times. What we’ve learned is that President Trump can impose extensive economic pain on Iran, but ordinary Iranians overwhelmingly bear the cost. The ruling elite in Iran remains largely insulated, while Tehran has repeatedly refused to capitulate to Washington’s demands. Trump’s gamble is that this time, amid the destruction of war, and with the reinforcement of a blockade, time is on his side and ultimately Iran will be forced to concede defeat,” Ryan Costello, policy director with the National Iranian American Council, wrote in a statement.
The U.S. and Israel launched a joint war on Iran at the end of February. Mr. Trump insists that Tehran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
In retaliation, Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, with a combination of small boats, drones and missiles. At least one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas moves through the strait each year, and its closure has driven up energy prices globally.
Brent crude oil, the standard international benchmark, stood at about $92 a barrel on Monday afternoon, up from $90 a week earlier.
The U.S. and Iran traded military strikes for weeks after fighting restarted in earnest in July, but Washington shifted to an economic pressure campaign after Mr. Trump called off another round of strikes earlier this month.
Iran has insisted that it will escalate the conflict well before it concedes defeat at the hands of an economic pressure campaign. Regional powers that go along with the Trump administration’s plans to isolate Tehran could face military reprisals from Iran.
Iraq, the UAE, Oman, Turkey and Pakistan all have relatively extensive economic ties to Tehran, mostly through oil imports and the export of manufactured goods.
Also unsaid in Mr. Bessent’s sanctions announcement was how the restrictions would affect U.S. relationships with China, Russia and North Korea, three of Iran’s most important allies.
Notably, several of the individuals and front companies designated Monday are based in Hong Kong and mainland China.
China buys at least 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, and Russia, although a smaller economic partner than Beijing, provided about $5.8 billion in trade in 2025. Moscow and Tehran have cooperated closely on security for years. The Kremlin reportedly shared tracking data with Iran’s military during the first weeks of the war with the U.S.

You can see Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi trying to dissemble about what's going on, but he can't get around the problems they are in with the naval blockade and the economy.

As we reported, the Iranian regime has lost its grip on the one piece of leverage it may have had with the Strait of Hormuz in its battle with the U.S.
Ship traffic has greatly increased by 400 percent over the past couple of weeks. That's thanks to the U.S. helping to shepherd vessels through the area. While it's still not up to the pre-military action traffic, it's increasing, and it shows people are thumbing their noses at the regime.
Add that to their economy being in free fall, and the civilian leaders in Iran know they are in trouble. As we noted, the Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, was arguing they needed to bring the war to an "end now," while they could do so in a "position of strength and dignity,” Translation: while they could pretend before the complete collapse. He appeared to take a shot at the hardliners, criticizing people "sitting outside the circle" who "do not know the state of the government."
But Pezeshkian wasn't the only one admitting there were big problems and flashing warning signs for the regime.
“No matter how strong we are militarily, if the people are hungry and we do not have financial circulation, economic growth and domestic production, we will not endure,” parliamentary speaker Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said while visiting Iraq on Friday.
In another swipe at Iran’s hawks, he added, “As someone who has experienced war, we understand the true value of peace.”
On top of that, Iran’s central bank governor admitted on state TV that the U.S. naval blockade has stopped Iran from selling its oil, which is a critical part of its revenue.
“It is a reality that we are not exporting oil,” Abdolnaser Hemmati said. “The Americans have frozen our foreign exchange reserves and do not allow us to access them.”
The blockade is also preventing critical products from coming into Iran. On top of that, the United Arab Emirates’ decision this week to impose a total embargo on trade and financial transactions with Iran will cut off a vital lifeline.
The numbers are bad.
The economic toll is already catastrophic. Inflation has soared above 80%, with prices for certain food staples up 100%. The currency, which triggered nationwide protests late last year after it collapsed, has lost a further 30% of its value this year.
President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have already promised even more, with an "Economic D-Day" coming.
It sounds like they are teetering on the brink.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent doubled down on the administration’s threats in a Financial Times commentary published Sunday in which he cited the World War II actions of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
“In 1943, the Allied powers convened the Tehran Conference to plot the course of an uncharted act,” he wrote. “As Roosevelt and Churchill weighed a campaign that would culminate in the Normandy landings, they asked themselves what could be done ‘to bring the greatest pressure to bear on the enemy’.
“History has returned that question to Tehran. And the moment has arrived to answer it with the full weight of American resolve.”
He continued by noting that although the Trump administration has decimated Iran’s military capabilities and its nuclear program, it’s now time for an “economic D-Day” that’ll not only target Iran but also its allies as well.
“The world should understand that our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” Bessent explained in both the Financial Times and an accompanying post to the social media platform X.

All this comes days after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued a shocking public statement warning the rogue nation’s leaders that their military alone can’t protect them if the Iranian people are starving and economic conditions continue to deteriorate.
“We are hungry, we cannot survive,” he said, according to the Middle Eastern news outlet Al Bawaba. “No matter how much military power we have, if people are hungry and we don’t have financial circulation, economic growth and domestic production, we will not endure.”
Meanwhile, Iran’s currency has dropped to a “record low against [the] dollar,” according to CNN.
“Iran’s currency – the rial – has dropped to a record low of more than two million to the US dollar on the open market,” the network reported.

Key Iranian officials warned of “seismic” retaliation against the country’s Middle East neighbors and the U.S. ahead of what the Trump administration describes as a massive new economic sanctions push, expected to be announced Monday.
Mohsen Rezaei, the recently appointed secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, told Iranian state-run media that any nation joining Washington’s economic sanctions campaign against Tehran will be considered an enemy. He also threatened that Iran will do whatever it can to fully stop energy exports from the region, signaling that Tehran is doubling down on its most powerful remaining leverage: squeezing the global oil market to extract a more favorable deal with the Trump administration.
“If they start such an action, we will not allow a single drop of oil to pass through the Persian Gulf. Oil will leave neither through the Strait of Hormuz nor through the Persian Gulf,” he said.
“If [President Trump] wants to do something, we will retaliate in a seismic manner,” Mr. Rezaei told Iran’s IRIB state broadcaster in an interview that aired Saturday. “Any country that takes part in imposing economic restrictions on us will be regarded as an enemy.”
Mr. Rezaei, widely viewed as a hard-liner whose appointment signals a tougher Iranian stance against the U.S. and other Persian Gulf states, specifically warned that Tehran could target other oil-shipping routes outside the region.
Maritime traffic through the crucial Strait of Hormuz is already at a near-standstill as the Iran war nears the six-month mark. The Trump administration appears set to use economic sanctions, rather than more direct military strikes, to pressure Iran into a deal that fully opens the strait to commercial shipping.

Iran is suffering greatly under the weight of a U.S. naval blockade and already harsh sanctions aimed at economically isolating the Islamic regime. Now the administration is ready to go further, though the exact details of its new economic sanctions plan have not been disclosed.
Mr. Trump announced an upcoming round of sanctions, which he dubbed “economic D-Day,” and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent amplified the announcement last week. Those restrictions are likely to serve as a substitute for further major U.S. military operations, Mr. Bessent said.
“It is time for our allies and the rest of the world to make a decision,” Mr. Bessent told CNBC in a Thursday interview. “We are going to squash the economy of this murderous regime.”
The U.S. blockade has had a massive impact on Iran’s oil economy, which has long stood as its economic lifeline even during periods of intense strain. Crude oil production in the country has fallen dramatically in recent months, now standing barely above domestic needs, according to oil-tracking firm Tanker Trackers.
Top leaders of the Iranian government acknowledge that the situation cannot last. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told state media Sunday that his nation must get out of the economic crisis.
“Capital and money are extremely sensitive to risk,” Mr. Pezeshkian said. “We have to remove this risk from the country.”
Mr. Pezeshkian’s comments underscore what appears to be a growing split within the Iranian government over how to handle negotiations with the U.S. Some favor diplomacy, and others are more willing to escalate militarily or otherwise lash out against America and its allies.
Should Iran retaliate militarily, it could once again target U.S. military bases in the region. Previous attacks on those installations have led to American casualties and the destruction of U.S. military equipment.
Iran could also try to further clamp down on energy exports from the Persian Gulf. In concert with proxy allies such as the Yemen-based Houthis, Iran could try to choke other oil shipping routes from the region or perhaps aggressively target key pieces of energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia or other oil-producing Middle Eastern nations.
Critics of the war against Iran say it has become clear that the U.S. has failed in its military objectives.
“What I reject is the catastrophic leadership of Donald Trump and [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu that has led to this debacle in the Middle East against Iran, a six-month war that was launched illegally, that was conceived incompetently, and that has been lost,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss, Massachusetts Democrat and retired Marine, told “Fox News Sunday.”

A state-run media outlet in Iran recently released a video targeting President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron, claiming that a $10 million bounty has been put on his head.
The clip is titled “Where and how should we kill Barron Trump?” and was published by a Tehran-based outlet with supposed ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to a Monday article by Euronews.
In addition, the video claimed Barron is being “fully monitored” and depicted virtual images of the dorms at New York University’s Constance Milstein & Family Global Academic Center.
It was also posted to the social media site X Sunday by “Israel War Room.” The clip opened with a disturbing image accompanied by the message “Where to Kill Barron Trump?” spelled out in red letters that appeared to be dripping blood.

The nearly three-minute-long narration suggested various methods for penetrating Barron’s security net, specifically citing escort vehicles and the positioning of his Secret Service detail.
Moreover, the propaganda piece claimed that Barron has been privately communicating with people on platforms like Xbox when his security detail is not around. These claims, including whether the bounty is legitimate, could not be verified by Euronews or the New York Post.
The New York Post did, however, include a translation of the video’s conclusion, which proclaimed, “This is just the beginning! Barron Trump, wait for us!” The newspaper also reported that the narrator said “many would be willing” to kill the president’s son.
This isn’t the first video of its kind. Last month, an IRGC-linked media outlet, Tasnim News Agency, published a clip entitled “How to Kill Melania Trump,” targeting her for assassination by listing stores that she likes to shop at.

Trump has repeatedly said that he’s left behind specific instructions “to just literally bomb” Iran “at levels that they’ve never seen before,” if any assassination plots come to fruition.
“I’ve left instructions, if they do it, they get obliterated. There won’t be anything left,” the president told reporters last month. “And they shouldn’t be able to do it. And Biden should have said that, but he never did; I don’t know why — lack of intelligence perhaps, but he never said it.”
