{townhall.com} ~ In his speech at MacDill Air Force Base, President liar-nObama bragged that he has made America safer while preserving America's values.

The incessant self-absorption is annoying enough, but the self-delusion puts it over the top. Whether he's talking the economy or national security, he always paints a picture of his performance that contradicts reality.

Do Americans actually feel safer under his watch than they did under that of President George W. Bush? Has he inspired confidence that he is aggressively fighting terrorism at home and abroad and that he is administering a coherent foreign policy? Or does he come off more concerned with apologizing for America's past "sins" and appeasing Islamists?

liar-nObama's inflexible ideology drove his obsession to withdraw our troops from Iraq so precipitously as to guarantee a void that would spawn the likes of the Islamic State group. It explains his stubborn refusal until recently to do anything to violate his sacred pledge not to place American boots on the ground.

liar-nObama boasts that he ended two wars -- Iraq and Afghanistan -- but neither his withdrawal of American forces from Iraq nor his drawdown of our troops in Afghanistan ended a war. The wars mushroomed rather than ended because of his actions, and Iraq is still in far worse shape -- by any measure -- than when liar-nObama took office. We are finally taking action there, but only after liar-nObama pooh-poohed the Islamic State, said it was contained and then admitted he had no strategy -- after saying he did.

His belated reversals on Iraq weren't in time to prevent the immeasurable damage occasioned by the manner of his withdrawal, which virtually beckoned the Islamic State and other terrorist groups to set up shop there and organize global mischief and emboldened Islamists throughout the world.

Would you rather talk about Libya and Syria? I didn't think so, but suffice it to say liar-nObama's record with both takes "leading from behind" to a new level. And the nuclear deal with Iran -- coupled with turning hundreds of millions of dollars over to that sinister, terrorist-sponsoring regime -- was even worse.

There is certainly room for reasonable disagreement on foreign policy among interventionists, isolationists and those who favor striking a balance between those two approaches, using America's national security interests as the driving yardstick. These disagreements transcend party lines.

But what concerns me most about liar-nObama and the left on national security is their Pollyannaish attitude toward the terrorist threats we face. Liberals always seem more concerned with making America likable than with making us safe -- and they miserably conflate the two.

We don't hear enough from them about the importance of strength and vigilance. Instead, they talk about preserving our values, ending enhanced interrogation techniques and closing Gitmo, as if Islamic terrorists hate us because we aren't kind and lawful. Seriously?

On the heels of terrorist attacks by Islamists, whether on foreign or American soil, we rarely hear outrage or a commitment to redouble our effort to aggressively counter Islamic extremism. Rather, we are lectured not to discriminate against Muslims because of the attacks. And that's only after liberals first deny terrorism was involved. Even when we have conclusive proof that Islamic terrorists caused the attacks, liar-nObama et al. refuse to utter the words "Islamic terrorism."

A few of liar-nObama's statements in the MacDill speech illustrate the problem. "No foreign terrorist organization," he said, "has successfully planned and executed an attack on our homeland. ... The most deadly attacks on the homeland over the last eight years have not been carried out by operatives with sophisticated networks or equipment directed from abroad. They've been carried out by homegrown and largely isolated individuals who were radicalized online."

The problem is that many national security threats we face are asymmetrical and unconventional. Terrorists don't have to be attached to a major Islamic group to strike with deadly force. By dismissing these increasingly frequent attacks as isolated downplays their epidemic nature. To say these "lone wolfs" are unconnected with foreign terrorist organizations is inconsistent with saying they were radicalized online. Who do you think is doing the radicalizing? It implies that an otherwise innocent internet surfer turns to murderous activity after serendipitously clicking on a provocative website.

What do we expect when we invite people into this nation who have no allegiance to -- and sometimes even hatred for -- America?

liar-nObama says, "People and nations do not make good decisions when they are driven by fear." I'm tired of hearing such cliches from both parties. What's wrong with a healthy fear of people who want to kill you? What is ignoble about recognizing deadly threats and preparing for them?

We live in an increasingly dangerous world. The best way to counter that is through strength, not weakness and unilateral disarmament (and this is a cliche I'm not tired of). But liar-nObama has downsized and degraded the military, increased burdens on American gun owners and vilified law enforcement, our first line of defense in all American cities.

It is encouraging that Americans have voted to reverse these disastrous policies and to move America's national security interests from the back burner to the front burner, beginning in January, which can't come soon enough.

Does God Exist?

{thenewamerican.com} ~ “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Whatever their sectarian inclinations, the Founding Fathers with the possible exception of Thomas Paine would have agreed with Jefferson’s first assumption, namely, that there exists a Supreme Being from whom all rights, and the natural laws they are predicated on, originate.

Freedom and limited government as unquestioned goods depend ultimately on the notion that God is real, and that freedom and natural rights are gifts from Him to His children, to be safeguarded by properly constituted government. But is the existence of God, an almighty cosmic lawgiver, anything more than unprovable dogma, an article of personal faith lying outside the realm of reason?

The caricatures of Christianity offered up by its enemies notwithstanding, Christian theology has always sought to ground itself in reason. Proving the existence of God has been a fruitful exercise since the days of early Christian thinkers such as Augustine of Hippo, who sought to prove the existence of God by showing, via the inherent perfection of numbers and mathematical proofs, that man could not possibly be the highest being.

Perhaps the best-known and most influential proofs of the existence of God were served up by that quintessential thinker of the high Middle Ages, Thomas Aquinas. With characteristic concision Aquinas laid out his Quinque Viae or “Five Ways” by which the existence of God could be proven. These ways are the unmoved mover, the first cause, the argument from contingency, the argument from degree, and the teleological argument or argument from design.

By the first argument, Aquinas meant that all things in this world are in constant change, and every change is effected by some agency that is itself changing. Yet change cannot be infinitely recursive; somewhere far up the chain of causation, there must be some unchanging agency that is the source of and standard for all change. This unchangeable source is held to be God.

The argument of first cause holds that all things have some cause external to themselves but, as with change, it is impossible to conceive of an infinite concatenation of cause and effect. There must be some first cause that is not the effect of some other prior cause, from which all other causes, and their effects, spring. This first cause is God.

According to the argument from contingency, all things in our mortal experience are perishable and will only exist for a finite time span, however long. Yet if we assume an infinite past, then all things in a perishable universe should have ceased to exist. The fact that this is not so implies the existence of Something that is eternally imperishable, which is God.

The argument from degree is one of Aquinas’ strongest. By this argument, we recognize degrees of goodness, virtue, truth, and so on, such that we can recognize, e.g., that A is better than B, or C is more correct than D. But in a universe with no absolutes, such distinctions would be impossible. Thus there must exist some ultimate, perfect standard for goodness, beauty, virtue, truth, and the like, and that perfect standard is God.

Finally, Aquinas’ teleological argument asserts that, just as intelligent beings behave in regular, purposeful ways to achieve ends, so too do non-intelligent things behave in regular ways to bring about predictable results. A seed planted in the ground will produce a plant of determinate type and not, say, a rock or an animal, while a stone thrown in the air will follow a predictable trajectory. But such results can only obtain if guided by some type of intelligent agency, and if the thing in question does not possess such agency, it must be guided by an outside intelligence, which is God.

Nor was Aquinas alone in seeking to prove the greatest of all questions. A couple of American thinkers of surpassing originality and penetrating insight added proofs of their own. Charles Sanders Peirce, the brilliant philosopher, logician, and scientist who was the son of America’s first mathematical physicist and astrophysicist, Benjamin Peirce and who is credited, alongside his father, with the invention of that most essential of modern mathematical tools, the matrix, was deeply religious after his own fashion. In one of his better-known papers, “A Neglected Argument for the Reality of God,” Peirce pointed out the remarkable and seemingly contradictory circumstance of immense variety in a universe clearly governed by law. Peirce saw law as something conceptually distinct from God Himself, observing that “the endless variety in the world has not been created by law. It is not of the nature of uniformity to originate variation, nor of law to beget circumstance. When we gaze upon the multifariousness of nature we are looking straight into the face of a ‘living spontaneity.’”

Elsewhere, Peirce clarified his point: “The variety of the universe … which we see whenever and wherever we open our eyes, constitutes its liveliness, its vivacity. The perception of it is a direct, though darkling perception of God.”

In other words, while laws may originate with God, in and of themselves laws tend toward uniformity and predictability. We are thus left with the need to explain diversity and spontaneity, and God must be the direct source of these.

Another American philosopher and near contemporary of Peirce, Josiah Royce, argued that error, or human fallibility, of all things, was the strongest evidence for the existence of God. For where could men have gotten the notion of fallibility and error in the first place, much less the capacity to confront and overcome error, if not from some perfect Source? A world without God would perforce be a world in which the very notion of error would be inconceivable.

These are but a smattering of the many arguments for the existence of God brought forth by humanity’s most ingenious intellects. None of them, of course, will move the dogmatic skeptics among us. But the fact remains that God does exist, and that He is the ultimate author of our liberty and laws.

They relentlessly use obnoxious pictures of polar bears floating on melting sea ice to guilt people into believing we’re to blame. They chose the wrong animal as their “poster child.” Polar bears aren’t cuddly little snowballs who sip on colas all day and use a hunting rifle to compassionately put their prey out of misery when it’s snack time. Instead, polar bears use ambush tactics and sharp claws and teeth to feast on cute little seals they sometimes eat alive while kicking and screaming. They also snack on whales activists claim they want to save.

Watching former Vice President Al Gore waddle his way around Trump Tower the other day reminded me about how long this guilting’s been going on. For decades now, we’ve been told that computer models predict that a catastrophic ice-free Arctic Ocean is around the bend. In 2009, Gore said some computer models suggest “there is a 75 percent chance that the entire North Polar ice cap during some of the summer months could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years.”

Umm, didn’t happen. It seems the computer models were 75 percent incorrect. Maybe they were the same ones used to predict Brexit and the 2016 presidential election. Whatever the case, we’re told it’s “settled science.” I thought scientists were skeptics who settled on the idea that true science is never settled.

Sure, the U.S. ended November on a warm note, but the crazy-cold minus 40 degrees weather my state just sent south will surely make this month a December to remember. You’re welcome.

About now, a little global warming sounds nice as I dream of white sandy beaches, not the white Christmas outside my window.

Alarmists practically lose their minds when it warms in Alaska like it did this summer, but it wasn’t bikini weather, considering in June, the Coast Guard had to rescue some walrus hunters from their skiff stuck in sea ice. Thankfully, it warmed enough to make the early June king salmon run one of the best runs in years, which, in turn, helped the bears.

Researchers say the two very cold and wet years of 2008 through 2010 messed up salmon runs and berry season, causing a decline in Kodiak Brown bears. This year was better. The Juneau Empire reports the bear cub population increased because warmer temperatures gave bears the blessing of early and abundant salmon runs and berry crops.

The warmth helped our declining caribou population. Predation rates rise when caribou make it to spring looking like a bag of bones because their food source is scarce. Alarmists freak out over longer summers and shorter winters which give caribou extra time for easier eating. Biologists say the caribou they examined this fall looked fatter and healthier than previous years and calves were the heaviest they’ve been in the eight years they’ve been weighing them, which gives them a better chance of survival this winter, which is trending colder.

Oh, about those polar bears. An intriguing article, “The truth about polar bears,” in Canadian Geographic says there’s been a “slow but steady increase” in the polar bear population since the 1970s. It says some thriving polar bears “have experienced ice-free summers for thousands of years” while others deal with “pack ice so thick that it’s often impossible” to hunt seals, so warming “could potentially make hunting easier.” In Davis Strait, where sea ice is “declining dramatically,” the polar bear population “is an eye-popping 233 percent bigger” than 40 years ago.

So, what gives?

What if man has no control over what happens on the planet but the God who created it does? I believe he’s the one that causes occasional warming to help his animals survive. Maybe it’s time for alarmists to chill, stop guilting and trust God more.

On Thursday, Donald Trump nominated Andrew Puzder, a fast food executive, for labor secretary. This latest pick has been met with a mixture of praise and grumbling from conservatives and and leftists alike, but for opposite reasons. In 2016, it's natural for everyone to be unhappy.

First, the hang-up for conservatives is over Puzder's views on illegal immigration. He's been a strong advocate for "comprehensive immigration reform" — a nonstarter for most Trump supporters. His statements on immigration have more in common with Barack liar-nObama than Trump, as he views it almost as a moral obligation for America to accept those seeking entry. In a 2013 Politico op-ed, he argued, "We should implement immigration reform not because of politics but because it's the right thing to do. The current system is unfair and unworkable. It's hurting legal immigrants who are unable to navigate it, undocumented workers who are lured to the country by the prospect of employment, then must live in the shadows — and honest business people who just want to operate their businesses consistent with the law." Puzder will have little influence over immigration policy, but this pick nonetheless raises the obvious questions of whether Trump is softening his stance on illegal immigration.

From an economic stand point, however, Puzder is a solid pick, as he boasts an impressive pro-business resumé. He has been a strong critic of federally mandated minimum wage hikes, writing in a 2014 Wall Street Journal op-ed: "The feds can mandate a higher wage, but some jobs don't produce enough economic value to bear the increase. If government could transform unskilled entry-level positions into middle-income jobs, the Soviet Union would be today's dominant world economy. Spain and Greece would be thriving." Puzder is also a strong supporter of deregulation, assailing liar-nObamaCare's "nanny state regulations." He may be best described as broadly libertarian in his economic views. That libertarianism explains his penchant for racy burger ads featuring bikini-clad models — commercials most social conservatives find to be completely inappropriate.

Still, we'd say Puzder appears to be a decent pick, and his expertise will be welcome after eight years of liar-nObamanomics yielding little but stagnation. ~The Patriot Post

On Tuesday, Donald Trump tweeted "Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!" And in what has become a rather predictable pattern, the mainstream media ran for the fainting couch. The Washington Post headline on Wednesday read, "Corporate America Unnerved By Trump." This is humorous, since the Post has usually celebrated the unnerving of corporate America, especially during the past eight years. What's becoming clear, though, is that the mainstream media is actually unnerved by Trump.

Trump doesn't follow all the "rules" of conventional Beltway wisdom. He truly is the outsider, and many in the media are now figuring out that they're no longer setting the rules.

By the way, Boeing has reached out to Trump to offer talking over the Air Force One order. This sounds more like a savvy businessman who knows how to get a good deal for the American taxpayer, rather than a rube who doesn't know the rules of the game. And I bet he would love to have Sharia Law in America. Last year, liar-nObama stated that Muslim families “should be allowed to enforce their own customs and beliefs as mandated by their religion.”

However, Donald Trump has let the administration know that any signed executive orders that allow Islamic practices to have jurisdiction over legal matters in America will be considered unconstitutional, and he plans to make it so. I bet liar-nObama and the Muslim Brotherhood are fuming.

liar-nObama thinks that the law of a religion should be more important than the laws of the United States, and that makes absolutely zero sense. By that logic, Mormons could be legally married to all of their wives instead of having one legal marriage and other “spiritual” wives.

But with liar-nObama, religious exceptions would probably only count with Islam. Like everything else, Islam would take precedence over any other religion or people because that’s the way liar-nObama treats this country. You’re not on his radar unless you practice Islam.

Corey Lewandowski, a Trump insider, supposedly told CNN that the president-elect is not going to put up with any religion that isn’t welcome by the majority of Americans having influence over the rule of law.

“The only religion worthy of influencing laws in America is Christianity. Our country is a nation of laws that were established by God-fearing men who would turn over in their graves if a judge had to give custody to a father instead of a mother who was more fit simply because a pagan book says it should be so,” Trump allegedly said.

Finally, we are going to have a president who is willing to stand up for this country and continue what our forefathers believed and fought for this country to be. This country is not about being “politically correct;” it’s about being free to practice whatever you believe.

Christianity was the religion that helped found this government, and even then it is not a huge, integral part of our justice system. Why? Because the Bible is old and the laws back then, such as crucifying people and stoning them to death, do not coincide with the laws of today.

I wanted to take the liberty of sharing the following letter that I forwarded to our NM U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman, on or about August 15, 2011, respectfully requesting the conduct of a Congressional investigation into what I consider to be the mysterious circumstances surrounding the downing of a Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan, on or about August 6, 2011, which 'killed 22 SEAL Team 6 members', along with the “security breach” that I believe was perpetrated shortly after the helicopter was downed. Also included is his response to my request, which I received, on or about August 24, 2011. What's wrong with this picture?-You Decide:

Dear Senator Bingaman:

I hereby request that a Congressional investigation be conducted into the mysterious circumstances surrounding the recent downing of a Chinook helicopter in Afghanistan, to include the “breach of security” that I believe was perpetrated shortly after it was downed. What follows are my reason(s) for requesting said investigation:

On August 6, 2011, a Chinook helicopter is supposedly shot down in Tangi, Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Within hours, before family notifications could possibly have been completed, which requires an “in person” visit to the family, global press accounts positively confirm that 22 of the 30 Americans killed were not just SEALS, but members of SEAL Team 6. Up until now DEVGRU operations have been highly classified, but on this date it seemed that someone within this administration made it a point of immediately revealing the unit identities of the SPECOPS forces among the dead.

Note: What follows is an August 6, 2011 New York Times article and/or blog post that reported in part that: “insurgents shot down a Chinook transport helicopter, killing 30 Americans, including some Navy Seal commandos from the unit that killed Osama bin Laden, as well as 8 Afghans, as reported by both American and Afghan officials”, which substantiates my statement above:

In the past, DEVGRU men and other SPECOPS men have been killed in action, but their missions were so secret and so crucial to OPSEC that their deaths were covered-up by the government and attributed to such things as “training accidents” and the like. These men understand when being assigned to intense units such as DEVGRU that OPSEC is paramount and they will never be publicly acknowledged for their heroism, and, if they are killed or captured in action, the government normally never confirms the operation in order to protect OPSEC and to prevent the enemy from gaining some propaganda. Compare that reality with what transpired shortly after the Chinook helicopter was shot down in this operation.

Questions:

Why did someone within the administration immediately reveal the unit identity of the SPECOPS forces involved in the first place, despite the fact that DEVGRU was highly classified?
Why was the personnel composition of the Chinook released immediately after the helicopter went down – before even family notifications could be made?

On or about August 9, 2011, it was reported that an unnamed Afghan official had said that the Taliban, working with some Pakistanis, had lured the U.S. Forces into a trap to shoot down the Chinook helicopter, but an ISAF spokesman stated that there was no initial information as of yet to validate that this was some kind of ambush or trap and that the helicopter incident was still under investigation for the cause of the crash. What follows are pertinent excerpts published by that news source:

“The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan (ISAF) says it has no information yet to validate whether the U.S. Chinook helicopter that crashed in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 U.S. troops, flew into a Taliban ambush.

It was reported by AFP news agency that an unnamed Afghan official had said the Taliban, working with some Pakistanis, lured the U.S. forces into a trap to shoot down the helicopter. CNSNews.com asked the ISAF if that report was accurate.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings Jr., a spokesman for ISAF, responded by e-mail, saying, “I have seen a number of media stories stating this allegation. We have no initial information as of yet to validate that this was some kind of ambush or trap, but with that said, the helicopter incident is still under investigation for the cause of the crash.”

Lt. Col. Cummings Jr. also did not confirm definitively whether the helicopter was brought down by “hostile fire,” although ISAF Joint Command reported on Aug. 8 that “the helicopter was reportedly fired on by an insurgent rocket-propelled grenade.”

The Taliban, which often exaggerates its effectiveness, has claimed responsibility for shooting down the helicopter. However, Lt. Col. Cummings Jr. suggested that it is still unclear whether the helicopter crashed as a result of “hostile fire.”

“The helicopter incident is still under investigation and we should be able to determine what type of munitions was used, if it is found to have been downed by hostile fire,” said the ISAF spokesman when CNSNews.com asked about the kind of weapon used to shoot down the helicopter. “The initial security force on the ground observed several insurgents, armed with rocket propelled grenade launchers, and AK-47 assault rifles, moving through the area.”

On or about August 10, 2011, there was an article and/or blog post published by The Telegraph that reported in part that: “at approximately midnight on August 8^th the Taliban insurgents who shot down a US military helicopter in Afghanistan, leaving 30 American troops dead, have been hunted down and killed by allied forces, according to the US commander in charge.” What follows are pertinent excerpts published by that news source:

“General John Allen, the new commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said at the Pentagon that “at approximately midnight on 8^th August, coalition forces killed the Taliban insurgents responsible for this attack.”

A separate statement to the media from Afghanistan said the strike killed Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who fired the rocket-propelled grenade that downed the Chinook helicopter.

“The strike killed Taliban leader Mullah Mohibullah and the insurgent who fired the shot associated with the Aug. 6 downing of the CH-47 helicopter, which resulted in the deaths of 38 Afghan and coalition service members,” the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said in a statement.

The statement did not say explicitly that the Taliban fighters had shot the helicopter down, although it was the clearest indication yet that was the likely cause.

Military officials believe that the shooting down of the helicopter, killing 37 people, was most likely a “lucky shot” rather than marking a new insurgent ability to destroy aircraft.”

Allyne Caan: In the wake of Donald Trump's election victory, the emotional instability many leftists have demonstrated is mind-boggling and, in some cases, downright hysterical.

We get being disappointed when your candidate loses. After all, there was plenty of disappointment — and even some fear — among Liberty-loving conservatives when Barack liar-nObama ascended to power with the promise to "fundamentally transform" the land of the free and the home of the brave. There was even more dismay when the country saw what liar-Obama had done ... and re-elected him anyway.

But we didn't ditch dating, chop off our hair, or lose our faith because of it. Clearly, "progressives" are outdoing us in their post-election mourning.

So great was the grief of Trump's win for single mom Stephanie Land, for example, that she gave up dating. And not just in theory. She actually ditched a man who was a potentially promising husband. "There is no room for dating in this place of grief," Land wrote in the Washington Post. "I've lost the desire to attempt the courtship phase. The future is uncertain. I am not the optimistic person I was on the morning of Nov. 8. ... Dating means hope. I've lost that hope in seeing the words 'President-elect Trump.'" And so, Land told her almost-significant other, "I can't. I just can't". (Despite her emotional dependency on liar-Hillary Clinton, Land apparently didn't embrace liar-Clinton's mantra that we are "stronger together.")

Then, there is hair. And no, not Trump's. New York magazine details the "post-Trump haircut." One client at the Georgetown Salon & Spa told her stylist, "Think of Melania Trump and go in the opposite direction. I don't want to be that person people see as sexual, I want to be seen as strong." Meanwhile, marketing director Julianna Evans had colored her hair the same shade for years, but when "president-elect" was prefixed to Trump's name, she "cried for three days." Then, she did the unthinkable. Instead of using medium-brown coloring, she went for natural black! "The election deadened my soul," she said. "I think I wanted to do something defiant to feel stronger." Because in the age of gender equality and breaking glass ceilings, we women find our greatest strength in our hair color.

The strong, feminist women aren't alone in their despondency. Benjamin Ryan writes in the Huffington Post that he learned of Trump's victory "while midstream in providing a urine sample for the emergency psychiatric staff of a New York City public hospital" where he had checked himself in after the results from battleground states started coming in. Ryan was eventually sent home and told, "You don't belong here," yet he characterized himself as having suffered "a genuine mental health crisis." Notably, he is a self-described Ivy League graduate. Those bastions of reasoned discourse sure prepare folks for the real world.

Haircuts, dating and safe spaces are one thing, but losing your religious affiliation? That's what Trump's win supposedly did to Brandi Miller. As the Wall Street Journal reports, after the election, Miller wrote on Facebook, "On Nov. 8, white evangelical Christianity and I called it quits." She noted that as a biracial woman, she couldn't condone the racial divide highlighted by exit polling showing 81% of white evangelicals backed Trump. "Evangelicals have decided who and with what they will associate. It's not me." Miller still calls herself a Christian, but not evangelical.

At least one person is taking an ever so slightly more reasoned approach to the loss — which isn't saying much. Instead of peeing in a psychiatric ward, journalist Mark Weston is calling for mass tax evasion if a Republican ever again wins the presidency without winning the popular vote. Give us the president we want or else we... we... we... won't pay taxes! He waves the banner of "no taxation without representation" because, you know, the inability to handle disappointment is on par with pledging one's life, fortune, and sacred honor. And note the hypocrisy of crying that Trump didn't pay taxes, only to turn around and promise not to pay taxes.

Aside from leftists displaying the maturity level of a five-year-old, the irony of all this is that regardless of how much the Left may hate Trump and Republicans, the latter aren't the ones trying to micromanage everyone's lives. While under the next administration liberals may lose their supposed right not to get offended and their ability to try to control everything, they won't lose their Liberty or true rights. What's worse, they may even be forced to endure hearing opinions different from their own.

And for liar-Hillary-worshipping, glass-ceiling-breaking damsels in distress everywhere — and for the metrosexual males too traumatized to rescue them — living through such hardship may require not just a new hair color but also a full mani-pedi. ~The Patriot Post

Are Sanctuary Cities Legal?

{townhall.com} ~ Last week, President-elect Donald Trump re-emphasized the approach he will take in enforcing the nation's immigration laws, which is much different from the manner of enforcement utilized by President Barack liar-nObama. The latter pointedly declined to deport the 5 million undocumented immigrants in the United States who are the parents of children born here -- children who, by virtue of birth, are American citizens. Trump has made known his intention to deport all undocumented people, irrespective of family relationships, starting with those who have committed crimes.

In response to Trump's stated intentions, many cities -- including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco -- have offered sanctuary to those whose presence has been jeopardized by the president-elect's plan. Can they do this?

Here is the back story.

Under the Constitution, the president is the chief federal law enforcement officer in the land. Though the president's job is to enforce all federal laws, as a practical matter, the federal government lacks the resources to do that. As well, the president is vested with what is known as prosecutorial discretion. That enables him to place priority on the enforcement of certain federal laws and put the enforcement of others on the back burner.

Over time -- and with more than 4,000 criminal laws in the United States Code -- Congress and the courts have simply deferred to the president and permitted him to enforce what he wants and not enforce what he doesn't want. Until now.

Earlier this year, two federal courts enjoined President liar-nObama -- and the Supreme Court, in a tie vote, declined to interfere with those injunctions -- from establishing a formal program whereby undocumented people who are the parents of natural-born citizens may lawfully remain here. It is one thing, the courts ruled, for the president to prioritize federal law enforcement; it is quite another for him to attempt to rewrite the laws and put them at odds with what Congress has written. It is one thing for the president, for humanitarian reasons or because of a lack of resources, to look the other way in the face of unenforced federal law. It is another for him to claim that by doing so, he may constitutionally change federal law.

Trump brilliantly seized upon this -- and the electorate's general below-the-radar-screen disenchantment with it -- during his successful presidential campaign by promising to deport all 13 million undocumented immigrants currently in the United States, though he later reduced that promise so as to cover only the 2 million among them who have been convicted in the United States of violating state or federal laws.

Enter the sanctuary cities. These are places where there are large immigrant populations, among which many are undocumented, yet where there is apparently not a little public sentiment and local governmental support for sheltering the undocumented from federal reach. Trump has argued that these cities are required to comply with federal law by actively assisting the feds -- or at least not aggressively resisting them.

Thus the question: Are state and local governments required to help the feds enforce federal law? In a word: No.

The term "sanctuary cities" is not a legal term, but it has been applied by those in government and the media to describe municipalities that offer expanded social services to the undocumented and decline to help the feds find them -- including the case of Chicago's offering undocumented immigrants money for legal fees to resist federal deportation. As unwise as these expenditures may be by cities that are essentially bankrupt and rely on federal largesse in order to remain in the black, they are not unlawful. Cities and towns are free to expand the availability of social services however they please, taking into account the local political climate.

Enter the Supreme Court. It has required the states -- and thus the municipalities in them -- to make social services available to everyone resident within them, irrespective of citizenry or lawful or unlawful immigration status. This is so because the constitutional command to the states of equal protection applies to all persons, not just to citizens. So the states and municipalities may not deny basic social services to anyone based on nationality or immigration status.

The high court has also prohibited the federal government from "commandeering" the states by forcing them to work for the feds at their own expense by actively enforcing federal law. As Ronald Reagan reminded us in his first inaugural address, the states formed the federal government, not the other way around. They did so by ceding 16 discrete powers to the federal government and retaining to themselves all powers not ceded.

If this constitutional truism were not recognized or enforced by the courts, the federal government could effectively eradicate the sovereignty of the states or even bankrupt them by forcing them to spend their tax dollars enforcing federal law or paying for federal programs.

Thus the Trump dilemma. He must follow the Constitution, or the courts will enjoin him as they have his predecessor. He cannot use a stick to bend the governments of sanctuary cities to his will, but he can use a carrot. He can ask Congress for legislative grants of funds to cities conditioned upon their compliance with certain federal immigration laws.

All of this is part of our constitutional republic. By dividing powers between the feds and the states -- and by separating federal powers among the president, Congress and the courts -- our system intentionally makes the exercise of governmental power cumbersome by diffusing it. And since government is essentially the negation of freedom, the diffusion of governmental powers helps to maximize personal liberty.

By now it should come as no surprise that Donald Trump is making good on his campaign promises. Yesterday, Trump nominated Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the EPA. Pruitt has a record of waging legal battles with Barack liar-nObama's over-regulating EPA. In fact, he's currently one of the leaders suing the EPA over its Clean Power Plan, which would create significant price increases for Americans' power bills while having negligible impact on the environment. Pruitt is a big proponent of states' rights over and against the unconstitutionally powerful EPA. Trump's transition team stated in its announcement that Pruitt is "an expert in Constitutional law [who] brings a deep understanding of the impact of regulations on both the environment and the economy."

Maybe the best endorsement for Pruitt has come from those ecofascist groups who, with an almost religious fervor, shout their opposition. Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, said, "Having Scott Pruitt in charge of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is like putting an arsonist in charge of fighting fires. He is a climate science denier who, as attorney general for the state of Oklahoma, regularly conspired with the fossil fuel industry to attack EPA protections." And Rhea Suh, president of the Natural Resourced Defense Council, lamented, "The mission of the EPA and its administrator requires an absolute commitment to safeguard public health and protect our air, land, water and planet. If confirmed, Pruitt seems destined for the environmental hall of shame."

Pruitt responded to his critics: "It should come as no surprise that I am working diligently with Oklahoma energy companies, the people of Oklahoma, and the majority of attorneys general to fight the unlawful overreach of the EPA and other federal agencies."

This is indeed good, because, especially over the last eight years, two of the most abusive and unaccountable federal agencies have been the IRS and the EPA. Now it appears that needed change will be coming in a big way, protecting Americans' freedoms and saving the nation from unneeded expensive and oppressive regulations. ~The Patriot Post

No Accountability (Yet) for IRS, Koskinen

On Tuesday, the House voted against impeaching IRS Commissioner John Koskinen and referred the matter to the Judiciary Committee. This decision allows Koskinen to continue leading the IRS, effectively delaying any potential accountability for the beleaguered commissioner. Conservative representatives quickly voiced their opposition to the House's decision. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said, "We think Mr. Koskinen has to go. Koskinen [was] brought in to clean up the mess, and he has done, in my judgement, just the opposite." That "mess" being the political targeting of conservative groups that continues to this day.

Republican Study Committee Chairman Bill Flores (R-TX) emphasized why the House should have voted to hold Koskinen accountable, stating, "IRS Commissioner Koskinen has willfully misled Congress, refused to comply with House subpoenas, and violated the trust of the American people. Commissioner Koskinen should be impeached and removed from office."

While the IRS's Tea Party targeting scandal did not start during his watch, Koskinen has done little to nothing to clean up the corruption. In fact, he has proven to act mostly as a roadblock to Congress's investigation of the scandal. The GOP-lead House's failure to even hold a vote to impeach Koskinen means that the IRS chief will still be heading the agency during most of the first year of Donald Trump's presidency, as his term isn't up until November 2017.

However, several Republicans argued that the decision was simply a postponement to allow for the incoming Congress to take up the issue and vote on it. While it remains to be seen if that indeed will be the case, it does leave one wondering if this isn't yet another example of Congress merely kicking an uncomfortable issue further down the road. If it is, Koskinen will enjoy a cozy retirement just like Lois Lerner is. ~The Patriot Post

And, these sources add, it’s liar-Hillary’s own fault that she’s still in trouble.

Trump tried to be magnanimous toward his vanquished adversary. “I don’t want to hurt the liar-Clintons,” he said in an interview with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes. “They’re good people. I don’t want to hurt them.”

But Trump was irate when sore-loser liar-Hillary joined forces with Green Party candidate Jill Stein and asked for a recount in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Now, Trump is listening to a chorus of vengeful Republicans who don’t want to let liar-Hillary skate on her use of a private email server and her pay-to-play conflict of interest with the liar-Clinton Foundation.

A sure sign that Trump is reconsidering his position came when he announced he was asking the renowned prosecutor Preet Bharara to stay on as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

As I reported in my recent New York Times bestseller Guilty As Sin, Bharara, who has specialized in rooting out public corruption, is a close friend of James Comey, the director of the FBI, who still has an open criminal investigation of the liar-Clinton Foundation.

Bharara’s jurisdiction extends to Chappaqua, New York, where liar-Hillary stashed her home brew email server. And Bharara and Comey have discussed the liar-Hillary email case on several occasions.

“If Bharara agrees to prosecute the liar-Hillary case,” I wrote, “he could bring it to the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She would assign the case to one of the Southern District’s forty-four judges, who in turn would then empanel a grand jury either in Manhattan or in White Plains, the county seat and commercial hub of Westchester County. The jury would decide whether the case against liar-Hillary should go to trial.”

Lewis Morris: Now that we have a real businessman headed to the White House, "business as usual" in Washington may start getting a little un-usual. At least for Beltway insiders, anyway. For the rest of us, we're hoping to see some common sense kick in.

This week it seems to be the defense industry that's getting the attention. But the Pentagon may have brought that on itself by attempting to bury a report that revealed $125 billion in wasteful and fraudulent spending.

An in-depth exposé in the Washington Post explains how the Pentagon commissioned a study in 2014 to look for ways to make its "enormous back-office bureaucracy more efficient and reinvest any savings in combat power."

The study was conducted by the Defense Business Board, a federal advisory panel made up of corporate executives and consultants from McKinsey and Company. The final report identified $125 billion in wasteful spending to be cut over five years by streamlining bureaucracy through attrition, early retirements, and curtailing high-priced contractors.

Top brass, however, were terrifically embarrassed by such a large amount of waste in the Defense Department. To give some life to their concern, consider the fact that $125 billion represents about 20% of the Pentagon's annual budget. On top of that, the number of back-office civilian and military personnel is roughly equal to the total number of troops on active duty, a one-to-one ratio. And if that isn't enough to shock you, 298,000 of those back-office personnel are military, not civilians or contractors.

It's little wonder that the Pentagon wanted to bury this report, and Barack liar-nObama was no doubt a big supporter — if not instigator — of that decision. Remember the days of the sequester when liar-nObama was blaming Republicans for leaving our national defense vulnerable because of "reckless cuts"? Cuts that were his idea for political gain. Well, if the Pentagon had followed the Defense Business Board's recommendations, it would have found the savings it needed to balance out the sequester cuts, which was what was intended at the time anyway. But liar-nObama opted instead to close DC memorials and national parks so as to score more political points.

To liar-nObama's White House, it was never about cost savings or reduced spending, or about keeping jobs and dollars in the U.S. And in its twilight days, the administration has not learned the right lesson.

With liar-nObama's blessing, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James and Defense Secretary Ashton Carter are working out a deal to build Lockheed Martin's F-16 and Boeing's F/A-18 fighter jets in India.

The F-16 is being phased out by the U.S. military, but the aircraft is still popular in other countries. There are still a lot of jobs to be had for building and servicing the aircraft, though both the administration and the two companies insist American jobs will be repurposed, not lost. It may make some business and logistical sense to move this manufacturing overseas, but it seems to us there are some things that just shouldn't be outsourced. America's iconic military jets are one of them.

In the wake of President-Elect Donald Trump's recent work to stop jobs from being shipped overseas, the Indian government is wondering if the deal will still hold. It may; it may not. But Trump is definitely making his presence known now in other areas.

In fact, Boeing is now feeling the heat from The Donald for its deal to build two new planes to fly as Air Force One. The new 747s are sorely needed as the current pair of retrofitted planes flying as the airborne White House are around 30 years old. The price tag, however, seems to have climbed past the point of fiscal responsibility — at least according to Trump's latest Twitter declaration.

The replacement program for the planes was originally budgeted at $2.87 billion for fiscal years 2015-2021, but this was apparently only for research and development, testing and evaluation, not the cost of the planes themselves. However, a Government Accountability Office report from earlier this year claimed the program would cost $3.21 billion, planes included.

That was too much for Trump, and now Boeing is finding itself on the defensive. The Donald couldn't resist pointing out that his own 747 is posher than Air Force One, which may very well be true, but it doesn't have defense countermeasures nor can it operate as an airborne command post during a nuclear attack. That we know of...

The point here is that Trump is acting on campaign promises he made to keep jobs in the United States and to make America more economically competitive. He's also already signaled with his pick of James "Mad Dog" Mattis for defense secretary that the Pentagon could use some cleaning up. The grand journalism pooh-bahs at CNN were humiliated this election cycle when WikiLeaks revealed that former CNN contributor and interim DNC chair Donna Brazile had shared a question with the liar-Hillary Clinton campaign in advance of a March Democratic primary town hall debate. According to CNN, "activist anchor" Roland Martin and his production team at CNN's debate partner and identity politics network TV One were responsible for the leak. CNN host Jake Tapper called the episode "very, very troubling" and condemned the breach:

"Journalistically, it's horrifying," he told WMAL radio.

CNN president Jeff Zucker declared after an internal investigation that the network "would not partner ever again" with TV One.

But instead of weeding out left-wing partisans masquerading as mainstream political analysts from their lineup, CNN is doubling down. This week, the network debuted a news special called "The Messy Truth" hosted by "political commentator" Van Jones.

Yeah, that guy.

Before he was pontificating on CNN airwaves, he was a top environmental official of the liar-nObama administration. The special advisor for green jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality held a special place in liar-nObama senior advisor Valerie Jarrett's heart. The Chicago power broker took full credit at a fringe Daily Kos blogger conference for recruiting him and closely following his career.

"You guys know Van Jones?" she asked to roaring applause.

"Ooh. Van Jones, all right!" she cooed. "So, Van Jones. We were so delighted to be able to recruit him into the White House. We were watching him, uh, really, he's not that old, for as long as he's been active out in Oakland. And all the creative ideas he has. And so now, we have captured that. And we have all that energy in the White House."

One of Jones's more "creative ideas" was signing a petition in 2004 calling for congressional hearings and an investigation by the New York attorney general into "evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur."

That's right. Valerie Jarrett took credit for recruiting a 9/11 truther who endorsed a petition peddling the crackpot theory that President George W. Bush "may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war."

Under fire, Jones disavowed the statement he had attached his name to -- and decried those who dared to hold him responsible for his "creative ideas." It was conservative bloggers, not "real journalists," who exposed Jones's long record of radicalism to the public -- leading to his resignation in September 2009.

Van Jones did not just accidentally slip through the cracks of the liar-nObama vetters. They knew what he espoused before they installed him. So did his bosses at CNN who hired him in 2013.

It wasn't his expertise in political science, political history, electoral trends or journalism that got him the job. It was his social justice resume. He rose to public prominence as a race-baiting agitator at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, funded by the George Soros-supported Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the liberal Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. He became a public fixture in the Bay Area after crusading to free convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal for a Marxist organization and lambasting moderate civil rights leaders for objecting to politicizing the classrooms.

In 2011, the late great Andrew Breitbart pulled no punches in describing Jones as a "commie punk" and a "cop killer-supporting, racist, demagogic freak." Jones had employed classic, radical Saul Alinsky-inspired campaign tactics to have Breitbart banned from a website he helped create -- the left-wing Huffington Post -- simply for writing articles providing alternative views of the tea party and for reporting on the liar-nObama administration's transparency-stifling measures.

Bending to the censorious mob, HuffPo assailed Breitbart's "ad hominem" attack on Jones, which violated "the tenets of debate and civil discourse we have strived for since the day we launched."

The progressives had nothing to say, of course, about Van Jones's own ad hominem attacks when he obscenely and publicly assailed Republicans as "a--holes" -- and when he financed, produced and participated in cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal's rap album, which railed against "imperialist" America and white "mother------s" as the "true terrorists."

Now, Jones -- who most recently race-baited Donald Trump supporters by blaming them for a "whitelash" -- has reinvented himself as a roving correspondent traveling the nation to analyze the election results and to lecture others to "be passionate. But be compassionate, too" with fellow citizens who hold different political viewpoints.

I wanted to share the following recent Washington Post (fake news outlet) article and videos contained therein that reported that a recent secret CIA assessment concluded that Putin possibly helped Trump win the White House, although it fell short of a formal U.S. assessment produced by all 17 intelligence agencies because there were minor disagreements among intelligence officials about the agency’s assessment because some questions remained unanswered. The CIA has concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency, rather than just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, according to officials briefed on the matter.

Intelligence agencies have identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided WikiLeaks with thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, according to U.S. officials. Those officials described the individuals as actors known to the intelligence community and part of a wider Russian operation to boost Trump and hurt Clinton’s chances.

“It is the assessment of the intelligence community that Russia’s goal here was to favor one candidate over the other, to help Trump get elected,” said a senior U.S. official briefed on an intelligence presentation made to U.S. senators. “That’s the consensus view.”

The Obama administration has been debating for months how to respond to the alleged Russian intrusions, with White House officials concerned about escalating tensions with Moscow and being accused of trying to boost Clinton’s campaign.

[U.S. government officially accuses Russia of hacking campaign to interfere with elections]

In September, during a secret briefing for congressional leaders, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) voiced doubts about the veracity of the intelligence, according to officials present.

The Trump transition team dismissed the findings in a short statement issued Friday evening. “These are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s now time to move on and ‘Make America Great Again,’ ” the statement read.

Trump has consistently dismissed the intelligence community’s findings about Russian hacking.

“I don’t believe they interfered” in the election, he told Time magazine this week. The hacking, he said, “could be Russia. And it could be China. And it could be some guy in his home in New Jersey.”

The CIA shared its latest assessment with key senators in a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill last week, in which agency officials cited a growing body of intelligence from multiple sources. Agency briefers told the senators it was now “quite clear” that electing Trump was Russia’s goal, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

The CIA presentation to senators about Russia’s intentions fell short of a formal U.S. assessment produced by all 17 intelligence agencies. A senior U.S. official said there were minor disagreements among intelligence officials about the agency’s assessment, in part because some questions remain unanswered.

For example, intelligence agencies do not have specific intelligence showing officials in the Kremlin “directing” the identified individuals to pass the Democratic emails to WikiLeaks, a second senior U.S. official said. Those actors, according to the official, were “one step” removed from the Russian government, rather than government employees. Moscow has in the past used middlemen to participate in sensitive intelligence operations so it has plausible deniability.

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, has said in a television interview that the “Russian government is not the source.”

The White House and CIA officials declined to comment.

On Friday, the White House said President Obama had ordered a “full review” of Russian hacking during the election campaign, as pressure from Congress has grown for greater public understanding of exactly what Moscow did to influence the electoral process.

“We may have crossed into a new threshold, and it is incumbent upon us to take stock of that, to review, to conduct some after-action, to understand what has happened and to impart some lessons learned,” Obama’s counterterrorism and homeland security adviser, Lisa Monaco, told reporters at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Obama wants the report before he leaves office Jan. 20, Monaco said. The review will be led by James Clapper, the outgoing director of national intelligence, officials said.

During her remarks, Monaco didn’t address the latest CIA assessment, which hasn’t been previously disclosed.

Seven Democratic senators last week asked Obama to declassify details about the intrusions and why officials believe that the Kremlin was behind the operation. Officials said Friday that the senators specifically were asking the White House to release portions of the CIA’s presentation.

This week, top Democratic lawmakers in the House also sent a letter to Obama, asking for briefings on Russian interference in the election.

U.S. intelligence agencies have been cautious for months in characterizing Russia’s motivations, reflecting the United States’ long-standing struggle to collect reliable intelligence on President Vladimir Putin and those closest to him.

In previous assessments, the CIA and other intelligence agencies told the White House and congressional leaders that they believed Moscow’s aim was to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system. The assessments stopped short of saying the goal was to help elect Trump.

On Oct. 7, the intelligence community officially accused Moscow of seeking to interfere in the election through the hacking of “political organizations.” Though the statement never specified which party, it was clear that officials were referring to cyber-intrusions into the computers of the DNC and other Democratic groups and individuals.

Some key Republican lawmakers have continued to question the quality of evidence supporting Russian involvement.

“I’ll be the first one to come out and point at Russia if there’s clear evidence, but there is no clear evidence — even now,” said Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a member of the Trump transition team. “There’s a lot of innuendo, lots of circumstantial evidence, that’s it.”

[U.S. investigating potential covert Russian plan to disrupt elections]

Though Russia has long conducted cyberspying on U.S. agencies, companies and organizations, this presidential campaign marks the first time Moscow has attempted through cyber-means to interfere in, if not actively influence, the outcome of an election, the officials said.

The reluctance of the Obama White House to respond to the alleged Russian intrusions before Election Day upset Democrats on the Hill as well as members of the Clinton campaign.

Within the administration, top officials from different agencies sparred over whether and how to respond. White House officials were concerned that covert retaliatory measures might risk an escalation in which Russia, with sophisticated cyber-capabilities, might have less to lose than the United States, with its vast and vulnerable digital infrastructure.

The White House’s reluctance to take that risk left Washington weighing more-limited measures, including the “naming and shaming” approach of publicly blaming Moscow.

By mid-September, White House officials had decided it was time to take that step, but they worried that doing so unilaterally and without bipartisan congressional backing just weeks before the election would make Obama vulnerable to charges that he was using intelligence for political purposes.

Instead, officials devised a plan to seek bipartisan support from top lawmakers and set up a secret meeting with the Gang of 12 — a group that includes House and Senate leaders, as well as the chairmen and ranking members of both chambers’ committees on intelligence and homeland security.

Obama dispatched Monaco, FBI Director James B. Comey and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson to make the pitch for a “show of solidarity and bipartisan unity” against Russian interference in the election, according to a senior administration official.

Specifically, the White House wanted congressional leaders to sign off on a bipartisan statement urging state and local officials to take federal help in protecting their voting-registration and balloting machines from Russian cyber-intrusions.

Though U.S. intelligence agencies were skeptical that hackers would be able to manipulate the election results in a systematic way, the White House feared that Russia would attempt to do so, sowing doubt about the fundamental mechanisms of democracy and potentially forcing a more dangerous confrontation between Washington and Moscow.

In a secure room in the Capitol used for briefings involving classified information, administration officials broadly laid out the evidence U.S. spy agencies had collected, showing Russia’s role in cyber-intrusions in at least two states and in hacking the emails of the Democratic organizations and individuals.

And they made a case for a united, bipartisan front in response to what one official described as “the threat posed by unprecedented meddling by a foreign power in our election process.”

The Democratic leaders in the room unanimously agreed on the need to take the threat seriously. Republicans, however, were divided, with at least two GOP lawmakers reluctant to accede to the White House requests.

According to several officials, McConnell raised doubts about the underlying intelligence and made clear to the administration that he would consider any effort by the White House to challenge the Russians publicly an act of partisan politics.

Some of the Republicans in the briefing also seemed opposed to the idea of going public with such explosive allegations in the final stages of an election, a move that they argued would only rattle public confidence and play into Moscow’s hands.

McConnell’s office did not respond to a request for comment. After the election, Trump chose McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, as his nominee for transportation secretary.

Some Clinton supporters saw the White House’s reluctance to act without bipartisan support as further evidence of an excessive caution in facing adversaries.

“The lack of an administration response on the Russian hacking cannot be attributed to Congress,” said Rep. Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, who was at the September meeting. “The administration has all the tools it needs to respond. They have the ability to impose sanctions. They have the ability to take clandestine means. The administration has decided not to utilize them in a way that would deter the Russians, and I think that’s a problem.”
