I believe President Trump has prioritized speed of action over consensus and coordination for his first year back in office.Ā This could be because he does not have a deep enough team in the White House of fully qualified individuals to work through both current and future fights.Ā He needs to enhance his White House team to include a current operations staff, a near-term planning staff (i.e. to work ongoing issues that require significant negotiation), and a long-term planning staff that socializes his ideas with LOYAL Republicans (no RINOs) in the Congress to set the stage for future actions.Ā This will slow progress in the near-term but will pay huge dividends later AND help to unify the Republican Party around his agenda so that they Win the Mid-Terms!
I understand what you write, but I am not covinced you are correct, but, you may be.Ā So much to do...so little time.Ā He may be dizzy from all the spinning around: four years of lawfare, campaign with lawfare, agenda is hounded by rogue judges and rebellious republicans and/or RINOs, MTG, Paul.Ā Maybe he should have a staff of three who, working well together, would advise him on his schedule of tasks in order to steady the dizziness, point him in the correct direction, and walk with him.Ā Or am I sayimg the same as you, just differently?
John, I liken the Presidency to leading a Unified Combatant Command (UCC).Ā A UCC Commander is a 4-star General/Admiral who is provided with a staff of roughly 1,000 soldiers, sailor, Marines, Airmen, and DoD Civilians.Ā The Commander may come from the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps which means that he must lead a staff made up of folks from across the military spectrum but he also must watch over his shoulder for the Chairman, the Joint Chiefs, the SecDef, and many other equally powerful opponents.Ā The UCC Commander has another problem.Ā Since most of his staff comes from different services there is a tendency for those from the Air Force to side with the Chief of Staff of the Air Force or Navy to side with the Chief of Naval Operations, etc.Ā So his staff is not necessarilly loyal to the commander.Ā This means that the UCC Commander must handpick a core set of staff officers who are fully loyal to him through which he can manage the entirety of the staff he is given while fending off attacks from the Pentagon.
President Trump, in his first term, failed to surround himself with that core staff of loyalists who understood the importance of Unity of Command; however, he has corrected that somewhat for the second administration.Ā Nevertheless, he still has the problems of disloyalty within the White House, the Executive Branch Departments/Agencies, and then dealing with the Congress, Senate, and the Judiciary.Ā Ā
As I said above, President Trump hit the ground running with a lot of policies that he wanted to enact rapidly through Executive Orders; however, now is the time to settle down a bit and build out a much deeper and very loyal staff that can engage with the external forces that oppose the Trump Agenda.Ā To do this, he must focus on dealing with the immediate issues of the day with a Current Operations Staff while having two Planning Staffs, an Operational Planning Staff that can plan and set the conditions for success on his Agenda in the near term (1 week to 6 months) and a Strategic Planning Staff that can plan and set the conditions for success beyond the 6 month time horizon.
This type of staff structure would free him to provide guidance and direction across three time-frames and bring about more stability to the overall operation of the White House.Ā He might even find a few minutes to take a nap.
That certainly makes sense. Thanks for the insights.Ā
The law hasn't changed! We allowed judges to get away with not applying the law!Ā
