  • Citizen Valor and Urban Vigilance: A Legacy Worth Leading

By Gary N. Darby Marine Corps Vietnam Combat Veteran Retired Law Enforcement Officer | Memoirist | Public Commentator

When Curtis Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels in 1979, New York City was teetering on the edge. The subways were battlegrounds. The streets were ruled by fear. And the political class had no answers. So Sliwa did what real leaders do—he acted.

He didn’t wait for funding. He didn’t ask for permission. He put on a red beret, rallied volunteers, and began patrolling the city. Unarmed. Unpaid. Undeterred.

That kind of courage resonates with me. I’ve seen what happens when institutions fail and citizens step up. As a boy delivering the Richmond Independent during the Stanworth murders in California, I learned early what proximity to evil feels like. The fear was real. The silence was deafening. And the need for vigilance was absolute.

Later, as a Marine in Vietnam and a law enforcement officer, I saw how communities fracture when crime goes unchecked. I also saw how they heal when ordinary people refuse to be passive.

Curtis Sliwa’s Guardian Angels weren’t just a patrol—they were a symbol. A declaration that New Yorkers wouldn’t surrender their city. That message spread across the globe. Chapters formed in Tokyo, London, and Johannesburg. But the heart of the movement was always the same: citizen valor.

In 1992, Sliwa was shot multiple times in a mob hit. He survived. He kept fighting. That’s not politics. That’s grit.

Today, New York faces a new wave of disorder. The names have changed, but the stakes haven’t. We need leadership rooted in lived experience—not theory. Curtis Sliwa has already proven he’ll bleed for this city. That’s why he deserves the chance to lead it.

This isn’t just an endorsement. It’s a call to remember what real courage looks like—and to demand it from those who seek power.

    • I agree 1 million % Curtis Sliwa is a hero!

    • Thanks for your post. Good one.

      • I agree.  No evil weapon formed against NYC shall prosper.  The communist running for NYC's mayor is funded by Soros Foundation.  Trump and the FBI followed the funding lines for that evil candidate.  One group has given much to him.  But that group was heavily funded by another group.  And that group was funded by the Soros Foundation.  The Soros Foundation tried to hide their tracks, but to no avail.  This info was brought to you via Ilona's favorite dairy-air!  That's Ilona's hole truth!

    • Justice is HERE.

      • Well, it's #3.  Comey - Tish - Bolton.  Sad for him.  What got to his brain.  But, yes, he is guilty.  Orange suit time.

No reply from Steve or Dee.  The format has not changed one iota.  Stinks.  Kings do not reply to serfs.  I may leave.

I recently conducted the Bedford Symphony in concert.  Many positive comments.  All glory to God.  Tonight;'s rehearsal saw the members present me with beautiful card signed by each of them.  Many wonderful comments.  No, Ilona,  nobody called me that word which dribbles over your bottom lip like diarrhea.

Isn't it time to get the lobbyist OUT of Congress and DC?

    • You begin the process of breaking this cycle by drastically reducing the number of days that Congress is in session and you control their living environment while they are in Washington, DC.  If we went back to the original intent of the US Constitution, Congress would be in session in Washington, DC four or five months out of the year and back in their home State Districts the remainder of the year.  Anytime Congress is in session in Washington, DC, they must be required to live in, what amounts to, Bachelor Officer's Quarters (BOQ), over on Fort Myer (right next to Arlington National Cemetery), eat their meals in the Fort Myer Dining Facility or in the Congressional Mess and be bussed back and forth.  There also must be strict accountability that Congressmen and Senators can meet with no one outside of a Government Building and their discussions must be recorded for the Congressional Record.  Just watch how fast we get control over our elected officials then.
