Yesterday, the Federal Reserve confirmed that its chairman, Jerome Powell, had earlier this year been duped into a conversation about the economy by a Russian comedic duo pretending to be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The fake interview, which a Fed spokesman gamely tried to dismiss as “a friendly conversation,” ended up being broadcast on Russian TV. And from there, as the BBC reports, “Video now circulating on the internet shows Mr. Powell describing a sharp slowdown in growth in the U.S., following the bank’s efforts to rein in price rises.”
Anytime a Fed chairman so much as sneezes, markets move, domestic and international economies recalibrate themselves, and huge sums of money are won and lost. So the news of Powell’s gullibility, and his grimly pessimistic outlook, couldn’t have come at a worse time for Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats.
After all, our octogenarian president just announced he wants to “finish the job.”
If “the job” is bringing the United States to its knees, he’s well on his way. “Biden’s record,” as Ben Shapiro notes, “is one of the worst for any first-term president. His ‘Finish the Job’ slogan sounds more like a threat by a movie villain than a guarantee of future prosperity. Joe Biden has nothing to run on. Nothing except former President Donald Trump.”
Begging Ben’s pardon, but running against Trump’s economic record would be idiotic, even suicidal — at least if Scranton Joe and his handlers are even remotely honest about it. Democrat voters certainly tend to be of the low-information variety, but not even these eyes-closed, hands-over-the-ears hordes can deny the difference between the roaring Trump economy and the whimpering Biden one. They can feel it in their bones, just as the rest of us can. As economic analyst and former Trump adviser Larry Kudlow has pointed out, “In January of 2021, we left Joe Biden a 6.5% economic growth rate and a 1.4% inflation rate.”
Anyone care to guess what those two measurables are today? The annual inflation rate is 5%, more than three times what it was when Trump left office. And, as our Nate Jackson pointed out recently, all the Democrats and their Leftmedia lickspittles can do is lie about it.
As for economic, ahem, growth, that too is going the wrong way. As Biden’s own Bureau of Economic Analysis reported yesterday, “Real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 1.1 percent in the first quarter of 2023, according to the ‘advance’ estimate.”
The Wall Street Journal digs into what’s behind those bleak GDP numbers: “Democrats say the Inflation Reduction Act will stimulate a new investment bonanza. But that will only be for a narrow cohort of favored green businesses. Everyone else will pay higher taxes and much higher energy prices while facing tighter regulation on environmental and many other grounds — on top of higher interest rates. The wonder is that business investment hasn’t fallen further.”
Gallup’s recent polling shows the president’s terrible timing: “As Joe Biden begins his reelection campaign, his job approval rating among the U.S. public has slipped to 37%, the lowest Gallup has measured for him to date. Biden’s job approval has been in the low 40% range for most of the past 19 months, apart from the current reading and a 38% score last July. … The drop in Biden’s job approval corresponds with Americans’ worsening evaluations of the U.S. economy. Gallup’s Economic Confidence Index for April is -44, down from -38 in March.”
Lest you think Gallup has it out for Biden, the normally friendly pollsters at Fox News have equally bad tidings: “Most voters think the economy is in bad shape, a record number feel it’s getting worse for their family, and not many think the White House is helping. … Economic views are negative by more than three-to-one: 21% say it is in excellent/good shape, while 78% rate it as only fair/poor.”
How far has Joe Biden fallen? It seems like ages ago when President Unity stood before the American people and boldly read this off the teleprompter:
On this January day, my whole soul is in this: Bringing America together. Uniting our people. And uniting our nation. History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity. We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.
Ever since, it’s been just that — bitterness and fury, with a steady diet of awful leftist policies and one sophomoric “Ultra MAGA” denunciation after another.
When Joe Biden took to the stage on Inauguration Day, his approval rating was at 57%. Today, he’s at 37%.

If you're not a little bit terrified about the head of the executive branch of the federal government, the commander-in-chief, the leader of the free world, the president of the United States... you need to be.
If you're not deeply concerned, you're not paying attention.
The fact that Joe Biden needed a cheat sheet with a reporter's name, affiliation, and picture is an embarrassment. The fact that he had the question the reporter asked pre-screened and typed out for his reference is a scandal.
A scandal not just for the president but for the compliant journalist and newspaper she works for.
The fact that this reporter agreed to play her part in the farcical little dramatic play presented at the White House Rose Garden called a "press conference" is an absolute scandal.
Don't believe the blatant gaslighting from both sides who claim the cheat sheet didn't match the question. Of course, it did. Both the question and the cheat sheet detailed the trade and manufacturing policy pertaining to semiconductors (or chips) and how it related to China and other countries in the region.
Just because the plucky little reporter engaged in a nice ad-lib and threw in some improv to make the script "her own" doesn't change the fact that she asked just what the president expected her to ask.
Scandal.
Also... notice how Biden is wearing his sunglasses in the press conference. The sun is not in his face; it is above and behind him. Look at it bounce off his head.
His face is in the shadows. He doesn't need the sunglasses to protect his eyes. His guest, the Prime Minister of South Korea, is not wearing sunglasses. How rude do you think it is for a president to keep his sunglasses on when meeting the leader of a foreign nation? Especially one from Asia, where such insults are very disrespectful.
So, what's with the glasses? He doesn't want anyone to see his eyes. The sullen, sad, tired, sunken eyes with dilated pupils and the blank stare shows how much he's aged in the past three years.
Be concerned... no, be afraid.

According to a Friday report from Axios, some White House aides are fed up with President Joe Biden's light schedule that's become the norm as the administration seeks to give the gaffe-prone commander in chief the best possible chance of making it through public-facing events without becoming a viral meme.
We're all used to the strange whispers and sudden yelling that typify Biden's speeches, as well as his pre-cleared reporters with apparently approved questions being asked at his rare press conferences. As Axios noted in its report, the White House "rarely puts Biden in improvisational settings — or in front of hostile questions from reporters," meaning "it's tough for anyone outside his tight bubble to truly appraise the reality of Biden being the oldest president in U.S. history."
Axios is right and, according to White House aides that spoke anonymously for the report, it's by design — even if that makes running the West Wing tricky.
"Some White House officials say it's difficult to schedule public or private events with the president in the morning, in the evening, or on weekends," Axios reported. After crunching the numbers, the aides' claims check out.
By the numbers: A breakdown of Biden's schedule so far in 2023 reveals how his staff tries to ensure he's at his best:
- Only four public events before 10 a.m.
- Just a dozen public events after 6 p.m. — mostly dinners and receptions with foreign leaders or fundraisers.
- 12 full weekends with no public events.
The light and limited event schedule for Biden's official calendar is expected to be mirrored in his recently announced reelection bid, continuing his 2020 strategy of waging a campaign from his basement. Axios said as much, explaining that the "White House is basically hiding Biden as he auditions for another term."
More from Axios' White House sources:
- Some White House aides privately have compared Biden to an aging king: He has a tight-knit palace guard of longtime aides whose first instinct is to protect him, and not take chances.
- As president, Biden hasn't done an interview with The New York Times, The Washington Post or The Wall Street Journal — a break from decades of presidential precedent.
- Biden's team points to scores of brief Q&A "interactions" he's had with reporters, along with the access he's given to largely sympathetic social media influencers and others — part of a strategy to help him reach voters by working around traditional media.
The White House's official spokespeople, predictably, are denying what aides told Axios, even though their explanation of the hazards of trying to run a West Wing helmed by an octogenarian mesh with Biden's schedule so far this year. "False," was Deputy Chief of Staff Jen O'Malley Dillon's response to Axios.
Further corroboration for claims that Biden is being sheltered from the public and the press came in March, as Townhall reported at the time, when former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki declared that "President Biden does nothing at 9:00 AM."
What's more, CNN explained in a previous piece about how Biden operates as president that his daily schedule includes a "return to his residence by 7 p.m.," more evidence that evening events are not an option for Biden.
It's of little surprise that Biden's handlers prefer to keep him away from cameras, reporters, and the public, however limiting doing so might be. Biden made hiding out in his basement the trademark of his 2020 strategy, and little changed when he took office in 2021. With false anecdotes about his upbringing, claims of disproven travels with Xi Jinping, and his frequent inability to accurately identify members of his own cabinet make keeping Biden hidden an understandable decision.
It does not, however, make for a competent leader — a reality that has become exceedingly clear with each new and worsening Biden crisis.
