WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday said the conflict in Iran is “small potatoes” as he defended Vice President JD Vance for asserting that months of on-and-off attacks in the Middle East are not a “war.”
Asked during an Oval Office exchange about Vance’s comments made a day earlier, Trump said U.S. strikes on Iran are now “intermittent” and “a lot of people don’t call it a war.” The conflict has cost U.S. taxpayers more than $37.5 billion and left 18 U.S. service members dead.
“I can understand what he’s saying,” said Trump. He added: “I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us. It’s not a big thing.”
Vance, during a White House press briefing Thursday, rejected the use of the word “war” to describe the U.S. fighting with Iran and steered clear of predicting that the 6-month-old conflict would be over by November’s midterm elections, in which Republicans are trying to hang on to their narrow majorities in Congress.
“I wouldn’t call it a war,” Vance said after being asked about whether the fighting could end before voters cast their ballots in the Nov. 3 elections. “Right now, there is no active shooting.”
Vance’s assertion came even as Iran fired at U.S. Gulf ally Kuwait on Thursday in retaliation for rounds of U.S. strikes on Iran earlier in the week.
Trump in Friday’s exchange with reporters added that the U.S. death toll in the Iran conflict is relatively lower than some other recent U.S. wars. The U.S. and Israel have only carried out air strikes in the Iran war, which began Feb. 28, and have not deployed troops into the country.
“We did Venezuela and we did this. In Venezuela, we lost nobody,” said Trump, referring to the January U.S. military operation to seize former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and spirit him to New York City to face federal drug trafficking charges. “And this, we lost 18 people. And, in Vietnam we lost 100,000 people. And in other conflicts, we lost tens of thousands of people.”
A total of 58,220 members of the U.S. armed forces died during the Vietnam War, according to records from the U.S. National Archives.
Pressed by a reporter on describing the conflict as “small potatoes” when 18 U.S. service members have been killed, Trump responded by reiterating his argument that the conflict — one that he said at the outset of the war would last a matter of weeks — has led to the defanging of Iran’s nuclear program.
“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon because if they did you probably wouldn’t be standing here,” Trump said.

CAIRO — U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers after Navy warships were targeted with missiles, the American military said Saturday, warning that it would, “if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet.”
The strikes — a day after U.S. President Trump sought to minimize the conflict as “small potatoes” — keep up a new tilt back toward fighting after six months of on-again, off-again war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on the country on Feb. 28. Both sides have sought to inflict both military and economic pain, and negotiations have collapsed.
The military’s statement said that an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer evaded “multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks” while patrolling in the region and no U.S. personnel were hurt. It said that two Iranian oil carriers were “permanently disabled” and the third, unladen one, was destroyed.
The U.S. statement said that the tankers were part of a shadow network helping to fund Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard and its armed proxies in the region.
There was no immediate Iranian response.
Iran had reported a strike near Kharg Island
Earlier, Iranian state television had said that four U.S. missiles struck a tanker about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Kharg Island, home to a terminal through which the country exports most of its oil. Kharg Island has been repeatedly targeted during the war, including U.S. strikes on military sites there in March.
The U.S. said that one tanker was struck off Kharg Island and another was struck near Jask, east of the Strait of Hormuz. The unladen tanker was hit in the Gulf of Oman, and the U.S. said its crew had been “directed to abandon ship.” The statement shared what it called video footage of the strikes.
After the U.S. statement, Iran’s state broadcaster reported the two other tankers attacked, saying their crews had evacuated.
“We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran’s limited and exposed oil fleet,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, the head of U.S. Central Command.
The strikes came nearly a week after the U.S. and Iran resumed attacks following a month of relative calm, with the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian communities along it again being targeted. At least five people were killed earlier in the week during a U.S. bombardment of southern Iran. One strike hit a wedding.
Masoumeh Zarei, 13, was wounded in the attack. She spoke to The Associated Press at a hospital while being treated for injuries to her abdomen.
She said that the wedding celebration had already begun when she set out to join it. She never made it there. She was knocked unconscious when a telecommunications tower was struck. Her next memory was of waking up in a hospital.
“The party had just started, and we wanted to go there,” Zarei said, her voice hoarse. “I had made my nails really pretty for the party, but everything changed.”
Her friend, 14-year-old Kiana Karimi, also was wounded and in intensive care. She told the AP that she heard five explosions.
“The first three explosions at the telecommunications tower threw us to the ground,” Karimi said. “I quickly got up to pick my brothers up off the ground. Then there were two more explosions, and after that I don’t remember anything.”
U.S. had tried to turn to economic pressure
The resumption of fighting in the past week came after new U.S. efforts to apply economic pressures on Tehran, whose hard-line new senior leaders have signaled the willingness to dig in after weathering decades of sanctions. The elected government of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, however, has said that it favors a negotiated end to the war.
Iran has found ways over the years to circumvent sanctions — and now a U.S. blockade of its ports — and get its oil to buyers to help ease growing economic pressures. That relies in part on a shadow fleet transporting its oil.
Meanwhile, the issue that helped lead to the war — Iran’s nuclear program — was meant to be addressed in negotiations that fell apart soon after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June. Now diplomats say the U.S., Britain, France and Germany seek to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for failure to comply with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations.
Instead, Tehran’s new leverage focuses on the strait that is crucial to global oil and natural gas shipments and was seen as an international waterway before the war began.
The U.S. military has been helping to guide ships through the strait as Tehran asserts control and targets some vessels, but overall traffic remains low.

Vice President J.D. Vance on Thursday said the U.S. is not in diplomatic talks with Iran and that the silent treatment would continue as long as control of the Strait of Hormuz is contested.
Speaking to reporters in the White House, Mr. Vance said Iran’s blockade of the strait and its attacks on tanker vessels in the waterway remain the primary obstacles to peace.
“We’re not talking to them. And we’re not going to talk to them unless they stop shooting at commercial shipping,” he said.
The U.S. has not met diplomatically with Iran since June, after both sides signed the Pakistani-brokered Islamabad memorandum of understanding. Mr. Vance led the original delegation for the first round of direct talks with Iran.
Asked about the Trump administration’s efforts to combat inflation and improve affordability, namely with rising gas prices, Mr. Vance quickly blamed Iran.
“We would have had an energy crisis because the Iranians refused to stop acting like terrorists in the Strait of Hormuz,” Mr. Vance said. “The Iranians would like zero million barrels to come out of the Strait of Hormuz. Last night, 15 million barrels came out of the Strait of Hormuz. That’s because of the United States of America.”
The U.S. has coordinated an escort campaign in the strait through Omani waters in recent weeks, allowing for millions of barrels of oil to move safely out of the Persian Gulf. However, the ships often must travel at night to avoid detection from Iranian forces, and transit levels remain far below prewar levels.
Gasoline prices are a particular worry for the Trump administration. The average price per gallon is above $4 per gallon, on average, up from about $3 at the start of the war, according to the AAA auto club.
At least one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz each year, and its closure has forced international energy prices to soar. Brent crude, the international benchmark for crude oil, sat at about $95 a barrel on Thursday afternoon, compared to $79 in early August and $66 a year ago.
Mr. Vance’s comments come as the U.S. war with Iran shows no signs of de-escalating, with missiles and drones fired from both sides across the Middle East in the most explosive week since July.
President Trump on Thursday raged against reports that the Iran war has severely depleted the nation’s munitions stockpiles. In a social media post, the president insisted that stockpiles of the essential ammunition are “virtually unlimited” and said the U.S. is producing them “at levels never seen before.”
“Far more than we could ever use for this, or for any other War (which is highly unlikely!), that could improbably take place,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social.
A Fortune report analyzing the cost of the first two months of the war, which began in late February, found that the U.S. burned through roughly 45% of its Precision Strike Missiles and about half of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors, or about $24 billion worth of ballistic missiles and interceptors.
An independent analysis published by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that it could take up to four years for the Pentagon to rebuild the U.S. stockpile of critical munitions to prewar levels.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine reportedly briefed Mr. Trump on the extent of the nation’s munitions shortage in July, shortly before the president decided to temporarily pause the air campaign against Iran.
Notably, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Mr. Trump has been privately considering declaring an end to the Iran war despite the heavy presence of U.S. troops in the region and an ongoing naval blockade.
Mr. Trump paused active combat operations against Iran in late July after citing diplomatic progress. He recently has been relying on an expanding economic pressure campaign to force Iran to the negotiating table by facilitating the collapse of its economy.
Separately, reports are circulating that Trump aides are looking to avoid a major escalation in the war ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections as officials grow increasingly concerned about the political cost of the war on Republicans up for election.
Iran has already signaled that it is prepared to escalate the conflict further.
Iran targeted U.S. bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates with missiles and drones on Thursday, marking the third consecutive day of strikes on American assets in the region. U.S. defense officials have said that neither of the attempted attacks caused significant damage.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said this week that it had launched successful attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan and Bahrain, targeting radar and training sites. While Iranian security officials said the attacks caused serious damage, regional ministries and U.S. Central Command rejected Tehran’s claims.

FBI Investigating Report of Millions of Driver’s Licenses Sold on Dark Web
This morning, we learned that the FBI has confirmed the findings of a journalist that over 150 million scans of US and Canadian ID information from drivers’ licenses, including that of the assistant FBI Director’s, are being sold on the dark web. People whose personal information may be involved in this theft, are advised to monitor their credit reports often and frequently.
According to the Epoch Times, “The FBI said Wednesday it is investigating a site on the dark web after reports it was selling more than 150 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses. Among them was the license information of the assistant director of the FBI.”
“Independent journalist Brian Krebs was the first to detect the criminal site, which was advertised on a Russian cybercrime forum with his own Virginia driver’s license appearing as a free sample on the site.
That detail caught his attention and led him to examine the rest of the site.”
Krebs published a report on Sept. 1, detailing that the site was offering digital scans of millions of the licenses. He said that nine people impacted by the data breach confirmed to him that the scans were real.
Remember Idemia, the international company which provides 55 million ID’s for Americans, PER YEAR – which was recently put into the hands of China? See my article, from just one month ago.
Oh, and don’t forget that a CCP Party member bought a building just 650 feet from the White House in DC. Recently hired by the Pentagon, Jennica Pounds, the blind and deaf Utah data analyst known as the “Data Republican” is under fire after unveiling a database she built to track people with ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Why shouldn’t we know who they are?? The Communist wannabe’s parade themselves on streets across the nation, waving their DSA banners. They run for office in blue states and talk about their desire to cancel the Supreme Court and the office of the President, and to promote limitless immigration with welfare for all. They remove police and put citizens at risk.
They demand “free everything”, to be produced by a Communist philosophy that has failed EVERY time it had been tried. EVERY TIME, through history.
I commend Ms. Pounds, and the Department of War. Why should the whole world NOT know who they are and be braced to stand against them? Those aggrieved by the smart move, are the same ones planning to destroy our Republic. Guaranteed.

Our 2026 Midterm is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. All 435 U.S. House seats, 35 U.S. Senate contests and 36 governor races are on the ballot in 2026. There is a lot on the line. And there is LOT of dark money behind the candidacies of the Communists who are running. Look at the defeat of strong Conservative, Andy Ogles, of TN, made possible by $6 million from liberal billionaires from California.
WITH WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR ILLEGITIMATE VOTES BEING CAST, Nov. 4, 2026 may be the end of our free Republic. Should the control of both houses of Congress be lost by the duly elected party in this Midterm, it would take decades to return to a semblance of freedom, if ever we could.
Frankly, I don’t believe America would ever be the same.
Those who think we need change (those who “hate Trump”, disagree with his moves as 47, are angry about gas and food prices, or think they love socialism) and might think they are inclined to vote for the “other guy” or just stay home, will learn, when they lose their homes, their bank accounts, their very freedom. And THAT is way too late.
Or has the process of mind-bending by the media, taken the lemmings to the edge of the cliff? As they mindlessly jump into the abyss at the directions of the communist leaders, voting for Communists and/or “anyone who isn’t Trump”, will they experience some quick sense of freedom should they “win” in the coming Midterms?
A victory by the Socialist/Communists will completely shred our Constitution and the nation that has stood strong on that document for 250 years.. America has done more for more people, during that time, than has any country in the history of man.
Communist countries cannot even do for their own .
What’s my message here? It’s simple: Have patience. And vote for our Constitution.
Stow your peeves at things that have been done or said by this current Administration. There are ZERO options from which to choose, on the Communist/”Democrat Socialists” side of the ballot if we still want freedom. Voting for one or more of them will NOT help our country.
Voting just to lift your leg on Donald Trump is NOT an answer to anything. I beg you to stay the course for now. Lose to the Communists in this election, and it will be our last, that is meaningful.

President Trump has begun his nationwide campaigning for midterm candidates, which will end up in Dallas on Sept. 9 and 10, at the Republican Party Midterm Convention, a first in national elections. Clearly, the Party is trying to overcome the massive voter fraud planned by the Left.
Pray that the Lord and cool heads prevail, and the results of the 2026 elections reflect the wishes of only legitimate US voters.
That is the best we can hope for any election.

President Trump said Wednesday that the Iranian regime is getting weaker by the day as the U.S. economic pressure campaign and military strikes continue.
Mr. Trump told reporters that Tehran eventually is “not going to be able to shoot so easily because I think the people aren’t going to take it,” implying that Iranian citizens would soon rise up and overthrow the government.
On Feb. 28, when Mr. Trump launched Operation Epic Fury, he called on Iranian civilians to take the opportunity to seize control of their country and depose the regime.
Mr. Trump said he was prepared to order another round of attacks on Iran after its forces responded to U.S. attacks overnight.
“We hit them very hard last night. We took out all of the new equipment that they tried to build along the Strait of Hormuz. Some offensive, some defensive,” he said. “It was a very heavy attack last night, and we’re prepared to do another one any time we want.”
In a trademark display of Trumpian bravado, the American president even suggested on social media that he was considering renaming the critical waterway after himself.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT??? Like America itself, it would be ’hotter’ than ever before!” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade earlier Wednesday that the U.S. would continue to strike at Iranian forces that threaten maritime traffic in the strait and U.S. service members stationed in the region.
“We will continue to target those things that pose an imminent threat to our forces and to global shipping in the straits,” Mr. Rubio said. “The straits will remain open, and they will not be under Iranian control.”
He said the U.S. had successfully demined the strait and accused Iran of continuing to fire on commercial vessels attempting to transit the waterway.
Earlier this week, two tanker vessels, the Saudi-flagged Sidr and the Liberian-flagged Senegal Prosperity, were hit by unknown projectiles within minutes of each other while transiting the strait.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported Wednesday that the incident resulted in two deaths. The Foreign Ministry of Bahrain confirmed that the two people killed were Filipino sailors.
The tanker attack was condemned by several regional powers on Wednesday, including Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Mr. Rubio confirmed that the U.S. economic pressure campaign against Iran would continue at full force.
Iran’s strikes on U.S. targets, along with Iran’s attacks on an American air base in Jordan earlier this week, sparked U.S. attacks on Iranian targets Tuesday.
U.S. Central Command, which oversees American military operations in the Middle East, said in a statement Tuesday evening that it had targeted “air defense sites, radar systems, [and] maritime assets.”
Reports from state-affiliated media in Iran indicated that the U.S. bombed sites near the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, Konarak, Chabahar, Qeshm Island and Sirik.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said one of the U.S. strikes hit a wedding party in Kuhestak, killing and wounding more than 50 people.
CENTCOM denied targeting civilians in a statement but did not specifically deny the accusation that a U.S. strike resulted in civilian casualties.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who announced Operation Economic Outcast last week, warned Wednesday that Washington was considering expanding its sanctions regime to target airlines, maritime organizations and digital assets.
“We all want this conflict to end, and the fastest way for the conflict to end is for no one to provide any support to this regime. We are going to sever every tie that they have,” he told Fox News.
On the military front, Iran’s retaliatory strikes began Tuesday evening and lasted into Wednesday.
The Jordanian Defense Ministry confirmed that 13 missiles entered the nation’s airspace from Iran, targeting the King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases. Three impacts were detected, but Jordanian authorities said the missiles crashed in remote areas and caused no damage.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said an attack on a Marine Corps training facility in Jordan known as Camp Titin killed several U.S. service members. The claim was denied by Jordanian and U.S. authorities, who said there were no American casualties.
The IRGC also targeted the Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Iranian officials said the strikes were intended to hit U.S. forces and destroy radar facilities.
Neither U.S. nor Bahraini officials confirmed the strike.
Iran also reportedly launched drones at Kuwait, but all were intercepted.
The Trump administration’s expanded sanctions regime is intended to squeeze Iran out of its economic relationships with other countries by threatening to cut off nations from the U.S. dollar system.
Thus far, the U.S. has targeted dozens of individuals and entities with ties to Tehran but has stopped short of targeting many of the economic institutions that provide Iran with access to the world economy despite heavy sanctions.
However, the Treasury did announce sanctions last week on the UAE branch of one of Egypt’s state-owned banks. Major state-run banks in China, Russia, Turkey and Pakistan have so far been untouched by secondary sanctions.
The U.S. is also maintaining a naval blockade of Iran’s ports, limiting Tehran’s opportunities to export its oil.
The blockade was conceived in response to Iran’s own blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Tehran has largely maintained the blockade since March.
Approximately 25% of the world’s seaborne oil trade and roughly 19% of the global liquefied natural gas trade pass through the strait, according to the International Energy Agency, and its closure has rocked international energy prices. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, stood at approximately $96 per barrel Wednesday, compared with $83 per barrel in early August.
The U.S. has worked consistently to reopen the waterway, often using military force.
Mr. Trump has said the strait is completely open for business, but traffic has remained well below prewar levels and tankers are often forced to travel at night to avoid being hit by Iranian drones or missiles.
Average crude oil departures through the strait passed 7.5 million barrels a day Wednesday, according to data cited by maritime intelligence firm TankerTrackers. That was well below the 17.67 million barrels a day that passed in February.
