Reagan identified the betrayal of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as a permanent stain of shame upon the American record. The Shah had stood as a formidable, reliable pillar of regional stability in the Middle East for three solid decades. His administration prioritized rapid economic advancement, secular education, and sweeping social reform.
Yet, Jimmy Carter pulled the rug from under a faithful partner. Carter severed strategic backing, withdrew vital diplomatic support, and surrendered an entire sovereign state to religious extremists. This cowardly retreat tore down a progressive, forward-looking monarchy and installed Ayatollah Khomeini. Carter’s shocking weakness transformed a prosperous regional ally into a blood-soaked epicenter of global jihad
The tragic fallout of Carter’s treasonous error reverberated across the entire planet for decades. The collapse of Iran erased decades of social and economic progress in a single stroke. Reagan understood a fundamental rule of international statecraft: strategic weakness always invites brutal aggression. He publicly condemned the Washington foreign policy cartel for abandoning a sovereign monarch who actively constructed modern hospitals, technical universities, and national transport networks. Iran-linked outlet releases video urging assassination of Melania Trump, threatens Barron!-Posted on The Washington Times-By Kerry Picket, The Washington Times-On July 28, 2026:
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Tasnim news agency posted a video Monday urging its supporters to assassinate first lady Melania Trump and threatening presidential son Barron Trump.
The video, narrated in Persian, named department stores in Manhattan where Mrs. Trump is known to shop for clothes and noted security measures deployed in advance of her trips, including the removal of trash cans on the streets.
The footage, first reported by The Times of Israel, called on “freedom fighters” to use a nerve agent to poison President Trump’s wife and named three of her personal stylists, who they suggested be bribed to poison her clothing.
Toward the end of the video, a narrator threatened the Trumps’ 20-year-old son, who is a student at a Washington university:
“This is just the beginning. Barron Trump, wait for us!”
The video surfaced just before Mr. Trump was expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House to discuss how to approach Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified facility buried deep underground near one of Iran’s main nuclear sites.
The threatening video also follows billboards in Tehran last week demanding the deaths of other Trump family members, including Melania, Don Jr., Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany and Barron — reading “Blood for blood.”
Separately, banners stating “We will kill Trump” appeared in Mashhad around the burial of Iran’s former supreme leader.
Tasnim’s media license is held by an outlet founded by an IRGC commander, is seen as the Guards’ mouthpiece, and was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2023 over its ties to the IRGC.
Iran has previously threatened to assassinate Mr. Trump, and earlier in the month Israel told the White House about an Iranian plot to assassinate him.
The president publicly acknowledged the plan to reporters recently, saying that the Iranians, “want to take out the U.S. leader — me.”
“I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long,” he said.

The U.S. paused strikes on Iranian targets for the second straight day on Sunday, reportedly in part over concerns about dwindling stockpiles of the interceptors needed to shoot down retaliatory Iranian missiles.
The last wave of U.S. military strikes in Iran occurred Friday, concluding a sequence of 13 consecutive nights of bombings.
Diplomatic talks and indirect negotiations are underway, including Oman’s mediation efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
A struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz erupted between the U.S. and Iran even after the signing of an interim ceasefire deal in June. Tehran demanded that all commercial ships going through the strategic choke point use a route near its coastline and said it could charge fees for the passage.
On Sunday, the Iranian foreign ministry summoned Ukraine’s envoy to the country to protest a long-range drone strike on one of its commercial vessels in the Caspian Sea that Kyiv said was transporting military supplies to Russia.
“The Ukrainian government must be held accountable for the incident and punish those responsible,” officials in Tehran said, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv has evidence Moscow is providing satellite information to Iran for its use against targets in the region, including U.S. bases in the Middle East.
“We have recorded active Russian satellite surveillance of the Gulf states and U.S. military facilities located there. These images subsequently appear in Iran,” Mr. Zelenskyy said this weekend on his Telegram page. “There is a clear correlation between Russia’s satellite imagery of those sites and Iranian strikes.”

CAIRO — Iran reported no strikes overnight into Saturday, an apparent break from nearly two weeks of consecutive nights of U.S. attacks, but tensions remain high following a recent escalation over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Health Ministry spokesperson Hossein Kermanpour posted on X, saying that “Iran had a peaceful night,” without any attacks reported. The U.S. Central Command didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. However, unlike the previous 13 nights, it did not announce new strikes.
Sirens sounded multiple times early Saturday in Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu and Jizan provinces, which house crucial oil facilities on the Red Sea, according to the Saudi Civil Defense. It said the sirens were because of a “potential danger” that was later lifted, without providing further details. Bahrain also sounded missile alerts early Saturday, but no casualties have been reported.
A tenuous ceasefire that appeared to halt major operations in the conflict that started with American and Israeli attacks on Iran seemed to unravel early July. Iran was accused of striking three ships in the strait. The U.S. responded by striking dozens of targets in Iran, which retaliated by firing at Arab states in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for world energy supplies effectively shut down by Iranian attacks, has been at the center of the conflict. The U.S. military fired Friday on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Oman that was trying to breach its renewed blockade of Iran’s ports, while Iran targeted U.S.-allied Gulf Arab countries.
Iran’s Houthi allies targeted two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea this week, raising concerns the group may again try to block Red Sea shipping routes. In response, Saudi Arabia struck the port city of Hodeida in Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said early Saturday.
U.S. embassies in the Middle East also alerted Americans in the region on Friday that options to leave could become more limited, as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard advised residents of neighboring countries to stay away from bases with U.S. troops.
The war has so far killed more than 3,400 people in Iran, according to the Iranian Health Ministry. Eighteen U.S. service members, 24 civilians in Israel, and smaller numbers of civilians were reported dead in countries across the region.
In Lebanon, more than 4,000 people have been killed, as well as 38 Israeli troops, after the Iran-backed Hezbollah militants fired at Israel in support of the Islamic Republic.

CAIRO — Mediators have achieved progress in efforts to get the United States and Iran back to negotiations and avert an all-out war in the Middle East, two regional officials said Monday, with a pause in attacks coming after a period of rapidly escalating tensions.
The comments came after neither the U.S. nor Iran reported carrying out any attacks for three straight days - a respite after about two weeks of sustained bombardments that had led to increasing fears of a return to all-out war.
The two regional officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regional talks, said mediators led by Qatar and Pakistan were working to bridge the gap between Washington and Tehran to return to an interim ceasefire deal that had been largely undermined by recent exchanges of fire.
No strikes over weekend
The U.S. has paused attacks after targeting Iranian coastal areas and infrastructure in a nearly two-week escalation sparked by Iran’s firing at ships trying to transit the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global oil shipments. The Pentagon did not respond to questions.
U.S. President Trump is “giving talks some space. He’s giving it a little bit of room,” Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told Fox News.
Waltz dismissed the idea that the U.S. stockpile of interceptors crucial in defending against Iranian attacks is running low, but experts have questioned how long both the U.S. and Iran can afford to keep up attacks.
Since the U.S. has halted attacks for the past two nights, Iran has as well, its army spokesperson told Iran’s state TV on Sunday. Tehran in recent days has counterattacked against countries in the region hosting U.S. military forces, killing at least three service members at a base in Jordan and one in Iraq.
Regional officials cite progress in talks
One of the regional officials who spoke to AP Monday described the progress made in mediation efforts as “significant.” He said mediators were working with Iran and Oman on a mechanism for managing vessels’ transit through the Strait of Hormuz, the flashpoint for the latest strikes and counterstrikes.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said during a news conference in Tehran Monday that mediators were conveying messages but there were no direct negotiations.
“Mediators may convey messages to us from the American side regarding ongoing developments in the region. But at present, we have no negotiations with the American side,” Baghaei said.
He said Iran and Oman, which lies on the other side of the Strait of Hormuz, had already held talks on Friday and Saturday on how to manage ship traffic through the waterway.
“The objective is for Iran and Oman, as the two coastal states, to develop mechanisms to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights and sovereignty of both coastal states, as well as Iran’s security and national interests” Baghaei said. However, he stressed that the waterway remains closed.
Tehran has asserted that the interim deal with the U.S. allows it to manage shipping on the waterway for now, and it has objected to U.S. efforts to support a route that passes close to Oman instead. The strait was considered an international waterway before the war.
The U.S. military on Saturday said its recently reimposed naval blockade against Iran continued, with a dozen commercial ships redirected, two disabled and two boarded. U.S. forces “remain highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready,” it added.
The 60-day period established by the interim deal in mid-June is now well into its second half, and major issues that were meant to be negotiated - notably Iran’s nuclear program at the heart of tensions - remain set aside as mediators try to keep both sides talking.
Shipping traffic on the strait is at a 3-week low
Concerns continue about shipping through another crucial waterway in the region, the Bab al-Mandeb strait to the Red Sea. Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen last week threatened a blockade of Saudi shipping there, and fired on at least one Saudi tanker, setting it alight.
Global energy supplies and the economy remain in the balance as gasoline prices have risen again.
Commercial shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz was at a three-week low, a maritime body overseen by the U.S. Navy said Sunday, adding that no new attacks had been confirmed in the past 72 hours. It said traffic remained steady through the Bab el-Mandeb.
Netanyahu says he ‘fully’ backs Trump’s efforts
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to travel to the United States and meet with Trump in Washington on Tuesday, his office has said. They last met in Washington in February, weeks before they launched the war on Iran that killed senior leaders including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Iranian-backed Hezbollah fired at Israel two days after the war began, and Israel responded with airstrikes and ground forces in southern Lebanon. Since then, the U.S. has supported landmark direct talks between Lebanon and Israel to try to calm that front and find a way to disarm Hezbollah.
Iran criticizes Ukraine for targeting ship in Caspian Sea
Separately, Baghaei slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after he said over the weekend that Ukraine had struck “vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran” in the Caspian Sea.
On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Ukraine’s strike on an Iranian vessel had killed a sailor.
In a statement on X, Araghchi denounced the attack as a “blatant U.N. Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war.” He said he made it clear in calls with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the attack “can’t go unanswered.”
Iran is an ally of Russia in its war against Ukraine, helping Moscow build up its drone expertise.
Speaking during the news conference in Tehran Monday, Baghaei said that “all parties that consider themselves in some way supporters of the Ukrainian regime must be held accountable.”
He said Zelenskyy’s “behavior is reminiscent of the anarchists who, on the eve of World War I, carried out theatrical and highly dangerous actions whose repercussions engulfed all of Europe.”
