Paris Attack Just a Random Shooting, Says Obama

Not only does Barack Obama refuse to admit that ISIL and its ilk are driven by Islamic ideology, he can’t even say that the group has a hit list. After an Islamic militant captured shoppers in a Jewish market in Paris, killing four Jews, Obama basically likened it to a group of gangsters roughing up Katz Deli in New York City. In an interview with Vox, Obama said, “It is entirely legitimate for the American people to be deeply concerned when you’ve got a bunch of violent, vicious zealots who behead people or randomly shoot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris. … It is right and appropriate for us to be vigilant and aggressive in trying to deal with that – the same way a big city mayor’s got to cut the crime rate down if he wants that city to thrive.” But combatting Islamic extremism isn’t the same as keeping the peace as the Italian Mafia and Russian thugs battle over who gets to collect trash and distribute cocaine. Fox News analystCharles Krauthammer asserted, “The reason [Obama] doesn’t have a strategy [to fight radical Islam] is because he thinks there is no need for a strategy because it is random violence.” Either Obama is deluding himself, or he brought political obfuscation to the next level. More…

‘Settled Science’ and Data Tampering

Arctic sea ice was supposed to have melted by now. Polar bears extinct. Sea levels at devastating highs. Civilization on the cusp of socioeconomic disaster. Alarmists' predictions never materialize, but doom is looming, they assure us. Interestingly, the diabolical Leftmedia never question the various narratives, but when it comes to evidence of scientific fraud they act like it’s simply part of the process necessary to narrow down the preconceived day of Climate Armageddon. The federal government is actively manipulating global temperature data to fit the narrative, which London Telegraph writer Christopher Booker reminds us “is the biggest science scandal ever.” In fact, he notes, “When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire panic ultimately rested – were systematically ‘adjusted’ to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified.” The science is “settled,” the Left lectures. So long as you ignore massive collusion and fraud.

The Myth of the One-in-Five Statistic Grows

As Mark Twain observed, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Barack Obama dished out all of it in a PSA about sexual violence that ran during the Grammy Awards. He claimed, “Right now, nearly one in five women in America has been a victim of rape or attempted rape. And more than one in four women has experienced some form of domestic violence.” The lie works because it’s repeated – often. So for the viewers who just wanted to witness Sam Smith sweeping Grammy win after Grammy win, the statistic sounded true. Last summer, commentator George Willquestioned the one-in-five statistic of rape on college campuses, arguing it was so inflated and didn’t make any logical sense that it was only good as government propaganda. Furthermore, Washington Examiner commentator Ashe Schow notes that Obama not only repeated a suspect statistic, but he stretched the truth even further. The statistic was traditionally used by progressives to talk about rape on college campuses. But then Obama went and applied it to all women in the United States. After all, he’s got a “war on women” to maintain. More…

House GOP Works on Life-at-Conception Bill

In the wake of the House debacle over the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, a group of 50 Republicans is working an another bill to establish life at conception. Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) explains, “There are thousands of unborn babies who need us to fight tirelessly on the issue of human life. I cannot think of a more important role for a benevolent society than to offer protection for the right to life of the most vulnerable among us.” Republicans see an opening in none other than the reasoning behind the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade. Justice Harry Blackmon wrote, “If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case [i.e., "Roe”], of course, collapses, for the fetus' right to life is then guaranteed specifically by the [Fourteenth] Amendment.“ It’s guaranteed Barack Obama will veto the bill, but it’s worth putting our representatives on the record regarding the clear science of when life begins. If Democrats claim to be the Party of Science™, this shouldn’t be a difficult question.

Hotline for Illegals, Not So Much for Vets

The Department of Homeland Security set up a hotline for people who believe their rights have been violated. Illegal aliens who believe so, that is. In the wake of Barack Obama’s amnesty, U.S. Customs and Border Protection advised illegals to "please tell us about your experience” if they feel they’ve been treated “contrary to the new DHS enforcement priorities.” Shawn Moran, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, says it’s an insult: “Instead of supporting our agents, this administration has decided it is more important to find new ways to solicit complaints and invite ridicule against them.” Meanwhile, compare that “customer service” to the treatment of veterans. There are hundreds of thousands of veterans awaiting help from the Department of Veterans Affairs in a variety of ways, from home-loan assistance to disability benefits to health care. Veterans quickly became far too familiar with the incredible lack of responsiveness by the VA. It is a near impossibility to actually reach a human being at the VA by telephone, and, if you ever do, good luck getting anything useful out of them. To see such shameful treatment of our veterans while Obama’s administration is placing funds into a program designed to assist people here illegally is beyond appalling. More…

Projecting Weakness Won’t Bring Peace

2015-02-10-f03c019e_large.jpg

For the first time since 2010, Barack Obama has released an updated National Security Strategy (NSS), an overview of threats to U.S. national security and establish a strategy for mitigating those threats. Not surprisingly, Obama’s NSS fails to identify several real threats or set a good course for maintaining security.

Anyone who has been remotely paying attention to world events knows there are several legitimate national security threats. One is the rise of the Islamic State, which continues to slaughter innocents and create major instability in the Middle East.

While the NSS identifies the Islamic State as a threat, Obama still fails to identify Islamic extremism and Islamic terrorism as a threat to the United States and the rest of the free world. Instead, the word “Islamic” is replaced by the word “violent.” Nowhere in the document can it be seen that violent extremism is perpetrated at the hands of Islamists.

Nile Gardiner of The Heritage Foundation notes, “The document steadfastly refuses to identify the ideological nature of the foe the United States is confronting, a brutal and vicious adversary that has made huge gains in Iraq and Syria under Obama’s watch. … Nor does the document outline a concrete strategy for defeating Islamist terrorism, from Iraq to Nigeria and Pakistan to Yemen.”

Releasing this NSS without acknowledging radical Islam as a threat isn’t naïve – it’s absurd. Why can’t Obama for once call our enemies what they are? We have heard him call ISIL “the JV team,” hail Islam as the “Religion of Peace™,” and insists that the Islamic terrorist attacks in Paris were just random shootings. Moreover, he still insists pulling our troops out of Iraq was the right thing to do even though it left a vacuum for the Islamic State to fill, and therefore negated almost everything for which our troops bled and died.

And now that we’ve left, Obama will reportedly seek an authorization for the use of military force against ISIL.

Meanwhile, a second threat is Iran – that is, a nuclear-armed Iran. The NSS mentions the ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and the administration’s goal of reaching a nuclear accord. Why is Obama so adamant about helping Iran acquire nuclear capabilities even though the nation’s leadership vowed to destroy Israel and the United States?

While the commander in chief appeases Iran, Houthi rebels, a terrorist militia in Yemenreportedly backed by Iran, have essentially taken over the Yemeni government. Soft diplomacy doesn’t work when dealing with radical Islamists.

Furthermore, Thomas Donnelly of The Weekly Standard writes, “[T]he most revealing section is that which asserts the administration’s determination to ‘lead with a long-term perspective.’” If leading by long-term perspective means waiting until the next president takes office to battle our real enemies, then Obama is well on his way because the new strategy doesn’t clearly define who our enemy is.

So far, Obama’s diplomatic efforts have failed. All the while, he has downsized the military in the face of growing threats. Our military remains technologically superior, albeit with a smaller force.

To make matters worse, veteran journalist Bob Woodward claims several of our top commanders complain “there is no strategy” and that they are being “micromanaged” by people in the White House – including National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Yep, the same Susan Rice involved in the Benghazi talking points fiasco. If this is the case, then it’s no wonder our top commanders are unclear on Obama’s strategy.

Overall, the new NSS dismisses radical Islam as a threat and aims to tolerate a nuclear powered Iran. Instead of following Ronald Reagan’s proven strategy of peace through strength, Obama has decided that our nation will follow his strategy of peace through weakness. So far, it hasn’t worked. But it seems he will continue on this path until we elect a president who knows that our greatest national security threat isn’t the changing climate.

Is Hillary Really Inevitable?

2014-02-13-132cab48.jpg

It looks as if Hillary Clinton is going to wait until summer to formally announce her inevitable presidential campaign. Her team originally looked at April as a jumping off point, but is now waiting until July. Team Hillary will use this time to work on assembling staff (and keeping them from resigning) and developing her platform. Because she hasn’t had enough time to finish that homework.

Unlike the Republican presidential field, which is well populated and already out on the trail, Clinton is facing little opposition among Democrats. She can afford to take her time in making her announcement. The only serious name that keeps coming up as a challenger is Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). (We know, we left Joe Biden off the “serious name” list.) Despite agrowing attempt to draft Warren, she has remained relatively silent on the matter.

The danger Clinton faces with a dearth of challengers is that her nomination will look more like a coronation. That’s what she and her supporters expected in 2008, but we all know how that turned out.

Iowa Democrat activist Anne Kinzel says, “The hacks think Hillary is entitled to be president. I think she is one of those people who has lost the sense of why they are in politics.” That sentiment seems to be spreading.

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod told USA Today that Clinton has to project a fresh message about where she wants to take the country: “I think she has to approach the campaign like a challenger, not like a front-runner – like an insurgent.” Odd advice for a woman who has been plotting a White House run since at least 2000, and perhaps 1993 if you consider that whole “co-presidency” thing her and Bill had going on.

Clinton’s operation, whenever it kicks in, will not leave anything to chance. Fundraising, public appearances and media relations will all be well orchestrated. It’s Clinton’s truckloads of political baggage that will be the problem.

One interesting tidbit that recently surfaced thanks to Axelrod’s upcoming memoir was Clinton’s plan to get John Edwards out of the 2008 race by offering him the attorney general slot in exchange for his endorsement. This was before Edwards' career went up in smoke thanks to his own scumbag behavior. He cheated on his wife while she was dying of cancer, fathered an illegitimate child and lied about it, and then used campaign funds to support his mistress and cover it all up. Yeah, he would’ve made a great AG.

We can’t be sure how Clinton would have handled the Edwards debacle when it did blow up, and it would have sooner or later. There’s little doubt the Leftmedia will circle the wagons rather than ask Clinton about her 2008 plans for Edwards. After all, it doesn’t exactly burnish her credentials as a champion of women’s causes – especially after she stood by her man, Bill, for little other reason than vain ambition. But at this point, what difference does it make, right?

OPINION IN BRIEF

Plato (429-347 BC): “Strange times are these in which we live when old and young are taught in falsehood’s school. And the one man who dares to tell the truth is called at once a lunatic and fool.”

Columnist Arnold Ahlert: “Right now there is more than $1 trillion dollars of outstanding student debt, with each student from the class of 2013 amassing an average of $28,400. The current default rate has fallen to 13.7 percent from 14.7 percent the previous year, but the Obama administration was still forced to raise its estimated cost for student loans by $22 billion. Why? Because the Obama administration is rigging the payback system. ‘The government is on pace to forgive billions of dollars more in student loans than previously thought as droves of borrowers enroll in federal repayment plans,’ the Wall Street Journal reports. The additional $22 billion is needed ‘due to plans that peg monthly student-loan payments to borrowers’ income and permit balances to be forgiven in as little as 10 years.‘ That’s not a repayment plan. It’s nothing more than welfare, ultimately backed up by the taxpayer. Why the taxpayer? Because universities themselves have no skin in the game. They get paid in full, no matter how many students default on their loans. And that’s because the Obama administration nationalized the student loan program in 2010 – as part of ObamaCare, no less. So what do universities who have no worries about the bottom line do? Pay professors more. Hire legions of worthless 'diversity’ specialists that now inhabit the bureaucracies of campuses across the nation. Build more expensive and fancier campus facilities designed to attract more students – all of which contribute to tuition costs that are completely out of control.”

Columnist Burt Prelutsky: “[I]f those who follow Islam are as peace-loving as those who are Christians, why is it that so many senseless murders are accompanied by shouts of ‘Allah Akbar!’ and so rarely by anyone referencing Jesus Christ? Furthermore, if those shouting ‘Allah Akbar’ as they mow down, behead and crucify infidels aren’t – as Obama and other liberals insist – true Muslims, how is it the pinheads are always so quick to label those who kill abortionists true Christians? And if we’re all the same under our skins, how it is that only the Islamics regard rape and the aforementioned crucifixions and beheadings, as a natural instrument of warfare? For that matter, how is it that some of us regard dogs as members of our family while others, who are allegedly our civilized equals, regard them as merely an optional source of protein? No matter what the adolescent ‘Kumbaya’ crowd says, there are savages who would be right at home in the eighth century all around the planet. They are as different in every way that matters from us as we are from a field of cow pies. And I, for one, say: ‘Viva la difference!’”

OTHER COUNTRIES SEE OBAMA FOR WHAT HE IS BUT AMERICA'S CAN';T?
PRINCIPLES FOR A FREE SOCIETY

Understanding that the Obama Regime is not a reliable ally in the war against Islamic terrorism, Jordan and Egypt join forces with Israel…yes, ISRAEL

UnknownThe two countries that share peacetime borders with Israel, Jordan and Egypt, are dealing with a historic challenge presented by Islamic State, also Flag-Pins-Jordan-Israelknown as ISIS, and its local extensions. The two countries, which over the past year have strengthened their ties with Israel in light of regional instability, could rely even more on the strategic support their neighbor gives them.

Haaretz via Arab America  (h/t Mike F) Only occasionally is information released by foreign media. Thus, according to a report on CNN last week, Israel sent drones to the Jordanian border with Syria to assist Amman in collecting intelligence with the goal of stopping possible attacks by ISIS from the northern border.

The conflict between Jordan and ISIS worsened following publication last week of a video showing ISIS members immolating the Jordan pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh, which actually was carried out more than a month ago. A wave of demands for revenge swept over Jordan following the gruesome murder of the captured pilot.

The Jordanian air force has already conducted dozens of sorties against ISIS targets in Syria. In Sinai, the Egyptian army has undertaken a major operation against the extremist group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, following the murder of 32 Egyptians, most of them members of the security forces, in a series of coordinated attacks by the group in the northern Sinai Peninsula on January 29. The organization announced it was moving its support from Al Qaida to ISIS in November.

PM Benjamin Netanyahu and President al-Sisi of Egypt

PM Benjamin Netanyahu and President al-Sisi of Egypt

The murder of the Jordanian pilot and recent terror attacks in Sinai have created expectations from both regimes to take strong steps. The Hashemite kingdom sees to it that every aerial assault on ISIS targets in Syria gets maximum media coverage. In Sinai, the Egyptian army is attacking Ansar strongholds with infantry and combat helicopters, some of which penetrate Gazan air space in blatant disregard for the Hamas regime in the Strip.

Cairo, which squarely blames Hamas for giving logistical and operational backing to groups working against it in Sinai, has renewed its threats against Hamas and plans on continuing its demolition of thousands of homes in Egyptian Rafah to create a “security zone” two kilometers wide on the border with the Strip. The purpose of the security zone is to reduce to a minimum the number of smuggling tunnels to the Palestinian side.

Israeli and Egyptian flags fly side by side

Israeli and Egyptian flags fly side by side

The Egyptian and Jordanian moves implicitly strengthen what might be called the “unity of the threatened” between those two countries and Israel.

But from the Israeli perspective, not all the results of recent developments are necessarily positive. Organizations affiliated with the Islamist political party Islamic Action Front in Jordan oppose the assaults on ISIS, and the open war King Abdullah has declared on that group is expected to heighten internal conflict and lead to ISIS revenge attacks from the Jordanian-Iraqi border as well.

Jordanian and Israeli flags fly side by side

Jordanian and Israeli flags fly side by side

In Egypt there are two possible negative implications. Renewed Egyptian pressure on Hamas, along with delays in rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip, increase the risk of a renewed outbreak of Palestinian violence from Gaza against Israel. Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which has already mounted attacks against Israel, could once again attack Israeli targets as a means of drawing more attention to the war of attrition it is waging in Sinai against the Egyptian security forces.

A high school senior has won her case over atheists to keep ‘ under God’ in the pledge of allegiance.

Samantha Jones from Highland Regional High School in Blackwood, New Jersey, has defeated efforts by the American Humanist Association to remove the phrase, insisting it is a student’s right to read the pledge in its entirety.

A judge in Monmouth County threw out the latest attempt to have the phrase banished from the pledge because it did not violate the state’s constitution.

The teenager described America as a country of many beliefs and claimed everyone, including atheists, are protected by ‘one nation under God.’

In a statement released Friday, she said: ‘I’m so grateful the court decided that kids like me shouldn’t be silenced just because some people object to timeless American values.’ (Read more about the atheists trying to alter the pledge of allegiance HERE)

dept. of election 850 245 6200

attorney general council 850 245 6536

                                    850 245 6500

Why is it illegal votes are being counted? Why is it that we the people have to beg our elected to file an appeal on a ruling that allows illegal votes before the deadline on Friday 2/13/15?

Florida's Governor and Attorney General need you to hear from you!

You see, this past November, a federal court issued an astonishing ruling forbidding the State of Florida to remove unlawfully present aliens and other noncitizens from its voter rolls in the 90 days before a federal election.

Even more astonishing is the fact that - by all indications - Florida looks set to drop its appeal of this terrible and unprecedented ruling.

We desperately need you to contact Florida's officials to try to convince them to appeal this ruling by going to the United State Supreme Court!

As a supporter of Judicial Watch, you should know that this entire battle began after Florida initiated a systematic effort to remove ineligible voters from its voter registration lists after Judicial Watch alerted the State of Florida that failure to maintain clean voter registration lists violates Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) - popularly known as the "Motor Voter" law.  In response to our letter, Florida then took steps to remove 53,000 dead voters from the voting rolls and, quite reasonably, thousands of non-citizens.

But the Obama administration and allied leftist advocacy groups who oppose clean elections then went federal court to enjoin the state from continuing its purge of illegal voters from the voting rolls.

These challengers relied on a provision of the "Motor Voter" law which tells state officials how to go about canceling the registrations of voters who have moved out of state.  The NVRA also mandates that such efforts must stop during the 90 days right before an election - also known as the "freeze" period.

Those challenging Florida's law argued that this 90-day freeze should apply as well to the effort to remove noncitizens - meaning foreign nationals, whether lawfully or unlawfully present in the U.S. - from the voter rolls!

Consider just how crazy that argument is.  Noncitizens were never eligible to register or vote in U.S. elections in the first place - indeed, it is a crime for them even to try to do so

Two separate trial courts tossed out both the Justice Department and its allies' claims and held that Florida could continue to remove unlawfully present aliens and other noncitizens from its voter rolls.

But last year, a divided three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the Obama-allied groups appeal and reversed the trial court's decision (the case is Arcia v. Florida Secretary of State).  In an activist 2-1 decision, the appeals court held that Florida cannot systematically remove noncitizens from the voter rolls during the 90 days running up to an election.  By the way, it is a felony punishable up to three years in prison to make a false claim of citizenship in order to register to vote! This issue is all the more urgent because of President Obama's refusal to secure our border and his lawless amnesty for millions of illegal aliens.

I think you will agree states should be encouraged to clean their voter rolls and to remove noncitizens.  Now is the time to strengthen electoral integrity laws, not to weaken them.

I think you will also agree that Florida should appeal this ruling. If this ruling is allowed to stand, your vote could be cancelled out by an illegal vote!

Judicial Watch reached out to strongly encourage Florida's Governor Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi to appeal the decision, but their offices don't want to talk to us.  Why on Earth would any Florida official fail to take action to protect clean elections in the Sunshine State!

Effectively, the State of Florida has until this Friday, February 13, 2015, to decide to appeal this ruling.  That is just a few days away.

If you are a Florida citizen, I hope you will do four things right now!

First - please contact Florida's Governor Rick Scott at (850) 488-7146 or send him an email him at http://www.flgov.com/contact-gov-scott/email-the-governor/.  Tell him that you want them to appeal Arcia v. Florida Secretary of State to the United States Supreme Court.

Second - call Attorney General Pam Bondi today and tell her you want them to appealArcia v. Florida Secretary of State.  The main switchboard number for her office is (850) 414-3300.

Third - alert your Florida neighbors and friends to encourage them to call too. (Feel free to forward this email!)

Fourth - please make your most generous tax-deductible contribution to Judicial Watch today so we can continue to fight voter fraud and carry out all our work battling government corruption.

No other organization is fighting voter fraud like Judicial Watch, even going to court when necessary.  And your support now will ensure Judicial Watch and our Election Integrity Project will have the resources to fight this battle and so many other election fraud battles we are waging across the country.

Please act today.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Thomas Fitton

President

Gallup CEOBy Pam Martens and Russ Martens. Years of unending news stories on U.S. government programs of surveillance, rendition and torture have apparently chilled the speech of even top business executives in the United States.

Yesterday, Jim Clifton, the Chairman and CEO of Gallup, an iconic U.S. company dating back to 1935, told CNBC that he was worried he might “suddenly disappear” and not make it home that evening if he disputed the accuracy of what the U.S. government is reporting as unemployed Americans.

The CNBC interview came one day after Clifton had penned a gutsy opinion piece on Gallup’s web site, defiantly calling the government’s 5.6 percent unemployment figure “The Big Lie” in the article’s headline. His appearance on CNBC was apparently to walk back the “lie” part of the title and reframe the jobs data as just hopelessly deceptive.

Low Gas Prices? nObama Says, 'You're Welcome'
As we've noted on numerous occasions, U.S. oil production is up and demand is down, leading to lower prices. Increased production is taking place entirely on private lands, yet, once again, Barack nObama is happy to take the credit. On Friday, he told a crowd of adoring supporters, "We're as free of foreign oil as we've been in 30 years. We've doubled the amount of clean energy that we're producing. A lot of families are saving a lot of money at the gas pump, which is putting some smiles on folks' faces." His remarks received a smattering of chuckles and applause, to which he arrogantly responded, "You're welcome." His policies have nothing to do with lower gas prices. Indeed, those lower prices have happened despite his best efforts. He did warn, "[A]t some point, [gas prices] are going to go back up." He has plans...  -The Patriot Post

His latest national security blueprint contains phony diversions like global warming and homosexual rights, while underestimating the world's greatest enemy. According to the Associated Press, "nObama says the United States must resist the urge to 'overreach' abroad, as he outlined a new national security strategy Friday that is meant to serve as a blueprint for his final two years in office. The 29-page document hews closely to n
Obama's long-held views of America's role in the world and forecasts no major shifts in the military campaign against Islamic State militants or in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine." That's rich, coming from a man who oversteps his constitutional authority every opportunity he can get. These "national security" protocols literally aren't worth the paper they're written on.  Purple Hearts for Fort Hood Victims
After the nObama administration spent years calling Nidal Hasan's murderous attack at Fort Hood an episode of "workplace violence," and thus denying Purple Hearts for the victims, sanity has finally prevailed. Announcing the decision, Secretary of the Army John McHugh wrote, "The Purple Heart's strict eligibility criteria had prevented us from awarding it to victims of the horrific attack at Fort Hood. Now that Congress has changed the criteria, we believe there is sufficient reason to allow these men and women to be awarded and recognized. It's an appropriate recognition of their service and sacrifice." Rep. John Carter (R-TX) fought long and hard to win this battle against foolish political correctness. "The victims of this attack have struggled, suffered and been abandoned by this Administration," he said. "No more. Today is a day of victory and I am honored to have fought on their behalf." Clearly, Hasan was in contact with foreign terrorists, and shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he pulled the trigger. No jihadi is a lone-wolf, and Hasan's rampage was a terrorist attack on our men and women in uniform -- they deserve appropriate recognition. More...   -The Patriot Post

Eric Holder's Biggest Failure: No Gun Control
The outgoing attorney general certainly tried. First, there was Operation Fast and Furious, the program that was supposed to track how U.S. guns were making their way to Mexican cartels. Then, Eric Holder pressured the FDIC to dry up the loans going to the firearm industry using Operation Choke Point, skirting Congress and the open lawmaking process. There was even the political push to pass federal gun control because of the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. It was the latter that Holder points to as the greatest failure of his tenure at the Department of Justice. Holder told MSNBC Sunday, "Well, I'll say this, [viewing the aftermath of Sandy Hook] was the worst day I had as attorney general. It is, I think, the single failure that I point to in my time as attorney general that I was not able to ... convince Congress to really follow the will of the American people -- which was to enact meaningful, reasonable gun-safety measures. The gun lobby simply won." In other words, Liberty was preserved, despite a partisan attorney general with an agenda. More...   -The Patriot Post

Brian Disappears as More Disinformation Emerges   In response to the allegations that he lied about embellishing an Iraq war story, celebrity NBC anchor Brian Williams took a leave of absence and canceled an appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" to lay low until this whole scandal blows over. "As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News," he wrote in a statement, "I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days. ... Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us." However, Williams' stories of braggadocio continue to multiply and grow. Ed Morrissey at Hot Air theorizes that the reason NBC staffers have not come forward to contradict or confirm Williams' Iraq war story is that they edited the footage to suggest their chopper was attacked. Combined with the possibly embellished accounts of Williams witnessing Hezbollah rockets and claiming to see a dead body floating in the French Quarter after Hurricane Katrina, Williams is demonstrating a gonzo streak more at home in Rolling Stone.   -The Patriot Post

Netanyahu, The Churchill Of Our Time, Must Speak Before Congre
(forbes.com) - It is fitting and proper–indeed essential for our very security–that Speaker backstabber John Boehner has extended an invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu to address Congress on Iran and its efforts to develop nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them anywhere in the world...The invitation has bipartisan support because many members on both sides of the aisle recognize the fundamental threat to world peace that a nuclear-armed Iran would pose. Like Winston Churchill in the 1930s with Nazi Germany, Netanyahu has been sounding the alarm about Iran’s ominous nuclear and terrorist activities. It’s a message much of Europe and even segments of the US, particularly in the nObama administration, don’t want to hear. The President has made clear his intense dislike of Israel’s prime minister and his refusal to keep quiet about nObama’s desire to conclude a Neville Chamberlain-like deal with Teheran. In a flagrant interference in another country’s election, nObama operatives are working hard in Israel to help bring down the courageous Prime Minister.       http://www.forbes.com/sites/steveforbes/2015/01/28/why-netanyahu-the-churchill-of-our-time-must-speak-before-congress/

Crusades Response To Jihad – Same Problem, Different Time
(Rick Wells) - Dr. Bill Warner of the Center for the Study of Political Islam put together a highly informative video and associated “dynamic battle map” which puts the early Islamic jihads and the ultimate response of Christians to their relentless attacks and oppression...the Crusades, into perspective. He recommends that anytime we meet someone who is an apologist for jihad, such as the current occupant of the White House, they should be confronted with the truth and he illustrates that truth in a very easy to understand and digest format in this short presentation.       https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_To-cV94Bo

McCain Involved In Major Islamic To Establish Islamic State
(Ben Barrack) - Recently revealed conversations between the Pentagon and the Gadhafi regime in 2011 show that then Secretary of State Hilly Clinton was serving the Muslim Brotherhood by pushing a false narrative to justify the removal of Muammar Gadhafi, as Shoebat.com has reported...With the help of corroborating evidence, we’re closer to proving that Republican Senator John McCain was likely just as invested in facilitating the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya as Hilly was. Before getting to the evidence that implicates McCain, let’s work backward from the Benghazi attacks. Any discussion about what happened in Benghazi on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks usually includes the topic of weapons shipments to Syrian rebels via Turkey. According to a book written by a former Navy SEAL and Green Beret, the man who would eventually become CIA Director oversaw that operation from the White House: By the time this is over with, there'll be more involved whos names have not been mention.       http://sonsoflibertymedia.com/2015/02/leaked-evidence-sen-john-mccain-involved-major-islamic-conspiracy-establish-islamic-state/

nObama Isn't Happy About the Good News That Bibi Just Received
(conservativetribune.com) - Apparently, President Barack nObama is not content to simply lose elections in one country. He’s therefore expanded his efforts to Israel — and doing about as well as you’d expect after the November midterms...Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party to which he belongs have taken a strong lead in polling leading up to the March 17 election for control of Israel’s 120-seat Knesset. Likud is now beating out its closest rival by four seats, according to a Jerusalem Post/Maariv Sof Hashavua poll. Of the six most recent polls, Likud is leading in four, is tied with Zionist Union party in another, and is behind Zionist Union by one seat in the sixth. Moreover, respondents who told pollsters that they want to see Netanyahu retain his role as prime minister outnumbered those who said they would prefer to see him replaced.       http://conservativetribune.com/good-news-bibi-netanyahu/?utm_source=feedblitz&utm_medium=FeedBlitzEmail&utm_content=936184&utm_campaign=0

Al Qaeda Spokesman Receives Deal With nObama Attorneys
(conservativetribune.com) - Given the nObama administration’s embarrassingly soft stance toward radical Islamists — even the ones who like to blow up buildings and kill innocent civilians...it’s shocking but not a surprise that an Al Qaeda spokesman would receive a generous plea deal from President Barack nObama’s attorneys. Terrorist spokesman Adel Abdel Bary, who also sits as a senior member of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, was given a generous plea agreement by Justice Department attorneys that would allow him to shorten his sentence of 25 years down to eight, with good behavior and time served taken into account. Even the U.S. District Judge, Lewis Kaplan, wanted to reject Abdel Bary’s plea agreement as he felt it was far too lenient for everything in which he had been involved. Abdel Bary pleaded guilty to a wide range of terrorism charges — ones that included complicity in bombings in Kenya and Tanzania that killed hundreds of innocent people and injured over 4,000.  Report Exposes EU Illegal Settlement in Judea and Samaria
European Union in Judea and Samaria
(Uzi Baruch, Ari Yashar) - Despite the 2012 Levy Report proving the legality of Israel's presence in Judea and Samaria under international law, the European Union (EU) has bitterly opposed that presence and even threatened sanctions...however, a new report reveals that it is in fact the EU that is guilty of "illegal settlement" in the region. Judea and Samaria was divided into Areas A, B and C in the 1993 Oslo Accords which created the Palestinian Authority (PA), and under the agreements Area C is under complete Israeli administrative and security control. However, the new report by Regavim, an NGO watchdog group for Jewish national property rights, reveals the extent of the EU's illegal actions aiding in PA land grabs in Area C. In doing so, the EU is creating illegal facts on the ground to pave the way for a de facto Palestinian state in the Biblical heartland of Israel.       http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/191036#.VNdxoJt00zt

Islamic Grooming Gang Arrested in Calderdale

(answeringmuslims.com) - Yesterday, I posted an article about the latest Islamic rape-wave in Northumbria, and I drew attention to the number of "Muhammads" on the list of deviants. Here's a list of Muslims recently arrested for grooming young girls in Calderdale...Notice again the number of "Muhammads." Can we really say, with straight faces, that even though the only feature that connects these rapists is their religious background, the problem nevertheless has nothing to do with Islam granting Muslims the right to rape their female captives? Twenty five men have been charged with child sex offences in Calderdale following a major police operation.       http://www.answeringmuslims.com/2015/02/islamic-grooming-gang-arrested-in.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+answeringmuslims%2FynNl+%28Answering+Muslims%29

(STUART WINER) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Sunday he would continue to try to defeat an expected agreement between the US and Iran over the latter’s nuclear development program as Washington predicted a handshake on the matter in the coming weeks... “The [international] powers and Iran are racing forward with an agreement that will allow Iran to arm with nuclear weapons, something that will threaten the existence of the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said before the weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem. Netanyahu declared that he was ready to go head to head with US Secretary of State Hanoi John Kerry in order to stop the deal. “At the end of the week, Hanoi Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif announced their intention to complete the framework agreement by the end of March, and that is what gives rise to the urgency in our efforts to try and halt this bad and dangerous agreement,” Netanyahu said. “We will continue to act and to lead the international efforts against the arming of Iran with nuclear weapons and we will act in every way to foil the bad and dangerous agreement that would cast a heavy cloud over the future of Israel.”       http://www.timesofisrael.com/netanyahu-vows-to-scuttle-world-powers-iran-deal/?utm_source=The+Times+of+Israel+Daily+Edition&utm_campaign=eb90bfa12e-_2015_02_08&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_adb46cec92-eb90bfa12e-54638825
Krauthammer – U.S. Should Make A
Formal Declaration Of War Against ISIS
Rick Wells

(rickwells.us) - The segment comes in the aftermath of the release of video showing the Jordanian fighter pilot being burned alive and begins with the information that the would-be suicide bomber that was originally part of a supposed trade deal has been relocated and will be executed before dawn.

Charles Krauthammer believes that the objective of ISIS in the brutal murder quite likely was to destabilize its neighbors, most particularly, Jordan, who is the only active participant at this point in the limited air campaign other than the United States.

He cites the vulnerabilities of Jordan to social unrest and upheaval, including a significant Muslim Brotherhood population as well as ISIS sympathizers.  He thinks that the goal was to draw Jordan further into a direct conflict with ISIS; a prospect which he believes does not benefit the United States.

Krauthammer remarks that only the United States or Turkey has a true capability to fight ISIS, and that the Jordanian involvement is largely symbolic. He says this was a way for ISIS “to stir the cauldron in a country that is stable, was stable, but is easily destabilized, and that’s what ISIS is after.”

He feels the U.S. needs to somehow get Turkey involved and the fact that they aren’t is indicative of a failure of our diplomacy.  The discussion also moves on to an Authorization for the Use of Military Force by Congress, which all panel members are in agreement on needs to be passed. The nObama regime also claims to want one so it should be a relatively easy thing to do.

Krauthammer believes we need to take it one step further, that Congress needs to actually declare war on ISIS, providing us much more latitude in conducting offensive actions against our enemy wherever they are.

I think there are several serious issues brought up in the article below (and several others I’ve read recently) about Article V Convention of States that should be addressed.  But so far...I haven't found anybody who’s answering a couple of mine.  I think Article V could be disastrous for America with the way the Emperor and Congress are getting in bed with each other.  I suspect the safest way this can be averted is for all 50 states to secede from the Union and partner with each other to overcome Federal grab.  Another question nobody is answering is WHY is Soros in favor of this?  Why is he one of the people backing it?  We KNOW it’s not because he cares what happens to the “peasants” in America.  It sends up a HUGE red flag to me that he’s already figured out a way to manipulate and subvert it.  One thing I advise EVERYBODY…do NOT follow anyone blindly.  Do your own investigating and research before signing or voting for anything.

Many grassroots, Tea Party, and Christian groups are being infiltrated with progressive ideas by people presenting themselves as Conservatives, Christians, or Patriots.   We must all be truth seekers.  Do NOT accept any information without checking out both the message AND the person.  Just because someone claims to be something, doesn’t mean they are.  Everyone / everything needs to be vetted.  Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow, but it is the truth.

You may want to read this article as well—“Exposing the Convention of the States (COS) as an Article V Constitutional Convention … and Who’s Behind It All, including Soros & Levin”

Delegates to an Article V Convention Can’t be Controlled by State Laws!

Our Declaration of Independence (2nd para) sets forth our long forgotten Founding Principles that:

  • All men are created equal.
  • Rights come from God.
  • People create governments to secure God-given rights. The first three words of our Constitution throw off the European model where political power originates with the State; and establish the new Principle that WE THE PEOPLE are the "pure, original fountain of all legitimate political authority" (Federalist No. 22, last sentence).
  • When a government seeks to take away our God given rights, we have the right to alter, abolish, or throw off that Form of government.

These are the Principles which justified our Revolution against a King.

These are also the Principles which permit us today to throw off our Form of government by discarding our existing Constitution and replacing it with another one. This is why the language at Article V of our Constitution, which authorizes Congress to call a convention "for proposing amendments", does not restrict Delegates to merely "proposing amendments": Delegates are invested with that inherent pre-existing sovereign right, recognized in our Declaration, to abolish our existing Form of government (our Constitution) and propose a new Constitution.

This has happened once before in our Country. I'll show you.

The Federal Convention of 1787: Federal and State Instructions to Delegates

Pursuant to Article XIII of The Articles of Confederation, the Continental Congress resolved on February 21, 1787 (p 71-74) to call a convention to be held at Philadelphia

"for the sole and express purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation".

The Continental Congress authorized each of the then 13 States to appoint Delegates to the convention. Twelve of the States 1 made laws respecting the appointment of Delegates and issuing instructions to Delegates. Ten States instructed their Delegates to propose alterations to the Articles of Confederation; and only two (North Carolina and New Hampshire) gave instructions which arguably permitted their Delegates to do more than propose alterations to the Articles of Confederation. 2

But the Delegates ignored the federal and State limitations and wrote a new Constitution.  Because of this inherent authority of Delegatesit is impossible to stop it from happening at another convention.

The Delegates also instituted an easier mode of ratification. Whereas Article XIII of the Articles of Confederation required approval of all of the then 13 States before an amendment could be ratified; Article VII of the new Constitution provided that only 9 States were required for ratification of the new Constitution.

Why is an Article V Convention Dangerous?

So! Do you see?

If we have a convention today, there is nothing to stop Delegates from proposing a new Constitution with its own new method of ratification.

New Constitutions are already prepared and waiting for a convention. Here are three:

  • Fifty years ago, the Ford & Rockefeller Foundations produced the Constitution for the Newstates of AmericaIt is ratified by a referendum called by the President [Art 12, Sec. 1]. If we have a convention, and Delegates propose the Newstates Constitution, it doesn't go to the States for ratification – it goes directly to the President to call a Referendum. The States are dissolved and replaced by regional governments answerable to the new national government. Read the Newstates Constitution and tremble for your country.
  • The Revolutionary Communist Party, USA has a Constitution for The New Socialist Republic in North America.
  • The Constitution 2020 movement is funded by George Soros and supported by Marxist law professors and Marxist groups all over the Country, Cass Sunstein and Eric Holder. They want a Marxist Constitution and they want it in place by the year 2020. It further appears that Soros is funding much of the current push for an Article V convention.

Warnings from the Wise

Brilliant men have warned against an Article V convention. It is immoral
to dismiss their warnings:

  • Alexander Hamilton writes of "the utter improbability of assembling a new convention, under circumstances in any degree so favorable to a happy issue, as those in which the late convention met, deliberated, and concluded…"  Federalist No. 85 (9th para)
  • James Madison writes in his Nov. 2, 1788 letter to Turberville that he "trembled" at the prospect of a second convention; and that an Article V Convention would give "the most violent partizans" and "individuals of insidious views" "a dangerous opportunity of sapping the very foundations of the fabric" of our CountryIn Federalist No. 49he shows that the convention method is NOT GOOD to correct breaches of the federal constitution because the People aren't philosophers – they follow what influential people tell them! And the very legislators who caused the problem would get themselves seats at the convention so they could control the outcome.
  • Former US Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg reminds us in his Sep. 14, 1986 article in The Miami Herald, that at the convention of 1787, the delegates ignored their instructions from the Continental Congress and instead of proposing amendments to the Articles of Confederation, wrote a new Constitution. He warns that "…any attempt at limiting the agenda [of the convention] would almost certainly be unenforceable."
  • Former US Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Berger warns in his June 1988 letter to Phyllis Schlafly that "there is no effective way to limit or muzzle the actions of a Constitutional Convention"; "After a Convention is convened, it will be too late to stop the Convention if we don't like its agenda"; and "A new Convention could plunge our Nation into constitutional confusion and confrontation at every turn…"

Can State Laws Control Delegates?

Convention supporters say we don't have to worry about any of the above because States can make laws controlling their Delegates.

Really? James Madison, Father of our Constitution and a consistent opponent of the convention method of proposing amendments, didn't know that. Two US Supreme Court Justices didn't know that. They said there is no effective way to control the Delegates.

But in case you are uncertain as to who is telling you the Truth – and who isn't - I will show you how easily State laws which pretend to control Delegates can be circumvented.

Let's use House Bill 148, recently filed in the New Hampshire Legislature, to illustrate this:

Section 20-C:2 I. of the New Hampshire bill says:

"No delegate from New Hampshire to the Article V convention shall have the authority to allow consideration, consider, or approve an unauthorized amendment to the Constitution for the United States of America." [italics mine]

Section 20-C:1 V. of the bill defines "unauthorized amendment" as:

"any amendment outside the scope permitted by the Article V petition passed by the general court of New Hampshire".

What is wrong with this?

  • It doesn't prohibit New Hampshire Delegates from proposing or approving a new Constitution.
  • Article V of the US Constitution provides that Amendments will be proposed at the convention. Any state laws contrary to Article V must fall under the supremacy clause at Article VI, US Constitution.
  • New Hampshire Delegates can't restrict Delegates from other States.
  • It ignores the inherent sovereign authority of Delegates to throw off both their State governments and the federal government by proposing a new constitution with whatever new mode of ratification they want. Remember! Under the proposed Newstates Constitution, the States are dissolved and replaced by regional governments answerable to the new national government.

And if the States already know what amendments they want, they should tell their State congressional delegations to propose them in Congress. This is the method James Madison always advised.

Section 20-C:2 II. of the New Hampshire bill says:

"Any vote taken by a delegate from New Hampshire at the Article V convention in violation of paragraph I of this section shall be null and void. Any delegate making this vote shall be immediately disqualified from serving as a delegate to the Article V convention."

What is wrong with this?

Section 20-C:2 III. of the New Hampshire bill says:

"Every delegate from New Hampshire to the Article V convention called for by the Article V petition shall be required to take the following oath:"

"I do solemnly swear or affirm that to the best of my abilities, I will, as a delegate to the Article V convention, uphold the Constitution and laws of the United States and the state of New Hampshire. I will accept and will act according to the limits of the authority as a delegate granted to me by New Hampshire law, and I will not vote to consider or approve any unauthorized amendment to the Constitution for the United States of America. I understand and accept any penalties that may be imposed on me by New Hampshire law for violating this oath." [boldface mine]

Does one need to comment on the efficacy of Oaths of Office in our degenerate times? Article II, §1, last clause, of our Constitution requires the President to take an Oath to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States"; and Article VI, last clause, requires everyone in the federal and State governments to take an oath to obey the Constitution.

Who today honors his Oath of Office?

Section 20-C:2 IV. of the New Hampshire bill says:

"Any delegate who violates the oath contained in paragraph III of this section shall be subject to the maximum criminal penalty under RSA 641:2."

Any criminal defense attorney worth her salt can figure out how to get around this one:

  • As shown above, if the proceedings of the convention are kept secret, or Delegates vote by secret ballot, one would never know if any one Delegate violated his oath. Defense counsel would get any attempted criminal prosecution of any particular Delegate dismissed at a pretrial hearing.
  • Congress can pass a law granting immunity from prosecution to the Delegates.
  • The Delegates can insert a clause in the new constitution granting themselves immunity from prosecution.
  • If the new constitution abolishes the States, as does the Newstates Constitution, there is no State left to prosecute Delegates.
  • The local prosecutor is the one who decides whether he will prosecute any criminal offense under his jurisdiction. Politics are a deciding factor in deciding whether to prosecute. Remember Eric Holder refused to prosecute Black Panthers who intimidated white voters at a polling place?

Do you see? James Madison, Justice Arthur Goldberg, and Justice Warren Burger were right: It is impossible to restrict the Delegates.

Everything to Lose, Nothing to Gain

If there is a convention today, George Washington, James Madison, Ben Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton won't be there to protect you. Who will the Delegates be? You don't know. Do you trust them?

Our Framers never said that when the federal [and State] government violate the Constitution, the remedy is to amend the Constitution they violate. They never said the remedy is to file a lawsuit and let federal judges decide.

They expected us to act as they did – with "manly firmness" 3 - and resist unconstitutional acts of the federal and state governments. Our Constitution doesn't need "fixing" – it needs to be read and enforced by our votes; and failing that, by manly opposition - resistance - nullification.

http://www.pbs.org/latino-americans/en/mi-historia/

America is our country, the land of immigrants that come in search of economic freedom and liberty to be the best they can be through self-determination; many of us know what is like to be an immigrant and what we went through to gain the acceptance and respect of our community. First generation of immigrants is the ones that paid the price so their sons and daughters can have a better life here in American, no matter where we come from, we suffered discrimination and exploitation. The land of the free to the new immigrants becomes the land of the oppressor and the predator that was determined to destroy the immigrant. The irony of this behavior is that they complete forgot about their pass and what they went through when they come as immigrants and the humiliation they experience by discrimination and exploitation to the point that many immigrants were persecute and killed just for being an immigrant.

Today, we must deal with our present immigration issue, and we must acknowledge that we are the ones that are to be blame for this immigration issue. We are the ones that allowed this to take place, Illegal immigration is the result of our failure to enforce our laws, we turned a blind eyes to this issue by convenience, the illegal immigrants are the source of cheap labor, so we do nothing because we benefit from this cheap labor and the exploitation of these people that come here, like us and the millions of immigrants that come to this country before us.

The truth is that Obama have the opportunity to pass an immigration reform in 2004; he had the support of Democratic control of both houses of the United States Congress; and this issue could be resolve as the first act, by the Obama administration after assuming control in 2004, but he preferred to use this issue as a political tool to get political power in the future as projecting an image that he was working on this issue, he continue using this issue by passing the dream act.  Democrats and Republicans use the issue of immigration reform to gain political points at the expenses of human beings that the only thing they want is to have the opportunity to be part of this country, and we did it and our fathers before us.

Fellow Americans 2015 is the time to deal with this issue of immigration reform; this is a matter of human rights and social justice, the exploitation of the illegal immigrants and the incertitude of their families must end.  We must remember that ones we were the new immigrants and were exploited oppressed, discriminate and treated like second class citizens; we do not want to do this to the new immigrants nor to the illegal immigrants; we must embrace this new source of human capital and do our best to educate them and teach them our history and our contribution we made to make this country great.  We are a Christian nation, we believe in our God given rights to freedom, liberty, self-determination and being our brother’s keeper. This is our land the land of the free build by immigrants.

Low Gas Prices? Obama Says, ‘You’re Welcome’

As we’ve noted on numerous occasions, U.S. oil production is up and demand is down, leading to lower prices. Increased production is taking place entirely on private lands, yet, once again, Barack Obama is happy to take the credit. On Friday, he told a crowd of adoring supporters, “We’re as free of foreign oil as we’ve been in 30 years. We’ve doubled the amount of clean energy that we’re producing. A lot of families are saving a lot of money at the gas pump, which is putting some smiles on folks' faces.” His remarks received a smattering of chuckles and applause, to which he arrogantly responded, “You’re welcome.” His policies have nothing to do with lower gas prices. Indeed, those lower prices have happened despite his best efforts. He did warn, “[A]t some point, [gas prices] are going to go back up.” He has plans…

2015 National Security Blueprint Gives America the Blues

Recent terrorist attacks serve as a gruesome reminder that Jihadistan remains a critical threat. In fact, at no other time in history have jihadis controlled such vast swaths of land and boasted such a powerful upper hand. Sadly, rising turmoil has done nothing to sway Barack Obama, who only reaffirmed he’s content to keep the issue on the back burner. His latest national security blueprintcontains phony diversions like global warming and homosexual rights, while underestimating the world’s greatest enemy. According to the Associated Press, “Obama says the United States must resist the urge to ‘overreach’ abroad, as he outlined a new national security strategy Friday that is meant to serve as a blueprint for his final two years in office. The 29-page document hews closely to Obama’s long-held views of America’s role in the world and forecasts no major shifts in the military campaign against Islamic State militants or in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.” That’s rich, coming from a man who oversteps his constitutional authority every opportunity he can get. These “national security” protocols literally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. More…

Purple Hearts for Fort Hood Victims

After the Obama administration spent years calling Nidal Hasan’s murderous attack at Fort Hood an episode of “workplace violence,” and thus denying Purple Hearts for the victims, sanity has finally prevailed. Announcing the decision, Secretary of the Army John McHugh wrote, “The Purple Heart’s strict eligibility criteria had prevented us from awarding it to victims of the horrific attack at Fort Hood. Now that Congress has changed the criteria, we believe there is sufficient reason to allow these men and women to be awarded and recognized. It’s an appropriate recognition of their service and sacrifice.” Rep. John Carter (R-TX) fought long and hard to win this battle against foolish political correctness. “The victims of this attack have struggled, suffered and been abandoned by this Administration,” he said. “No more. Today is a day of victory and I am honored to have fought on their behalf.” Clearly, Hasan was in contact with foreign terrorists, and shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he pulled the trigger. No jihadi is a lone-wolf, and Hasan’s rampage was a terrorist attack on our men and women in uniform – they deserve appropriate recognition. More…

Eric Holder’s Biggest Failure: No Gun Control

The outgoing attorney general certainly tried. First, there was Operation Fast and Furious, the program that was supposed to track how U.S. guns were making their way to Mexican cartels. Then, Eric Holder pressured the FDIC to dry up the loans going to the firearm industry usingOperation Choke Point, skirting Congress and the open lawmaking process. There was even the political push to pass federal gun control because of the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012. It was the latter that Holder points to as the greatest failure of his tenure at the Department of Justice. Holder told MSNBC Sunday, “Well, I’ll say this, [viewing the aftermath of Sandy Hook] was the worst day I had as attorney general. It is, I think, the single failure that I point to in my time as attorney general that I was not able to … convince Congress to really follow the will of the American people – which was to enact meaningful, reasonable gun-safety measures. The gun lobby simply won.” In other words, Liberty was preserved, despite a partisan attorney general with an agenda. More…

Brian Williams Disappears as More Disinformation Emerges

In response to the allegations that he lied about embellishing an Iraq war story, celebrity NBC anchor Brian Williams took a leave of absence and canceled an appearance on David Letterman’s “Late Show” to lay low until this whole scandal blows over. “As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News,” he wrote in a statement, “I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days. … Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us.” However, Williams' stories of braggadocio continue to multiply and grow.

RIGHT ANALYSIS

Barack the Lyin'heart Goes on Crusade

2015-02-09-dc8d2ebf.jpg

In one of the more appalling moments of his presidency, Barack Obama demonstrated last Thursday an unprecedented level of moral bankruptcy, a breathtaking ignorance of history, and utter contempt for a country that twice elected him to the highest office in the land.

The scene was the National Prayer Breakfast, which took place exactly two days after ISIL released a 22-minute video showing captured Jordanian pilot Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh being burned alive. And in one of the most ham-fisted attempts by any politician to downplay the connection between a group of bloodthirsty thugs operating under the self-professed banner of Islam and Islam itself, Obama decided that putting Christianity on the same footing as ISIL was the right thing to do.

“Lest we get on our high horse and think this [barbarity] is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” Obama declared. “In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”

Once again, Obama feels the need to belittle or apologize for America in a pathetic attempt to produce moral equivalency. And even then, he gets it wrong or omits half the story. As noted Islamic historian Bernard Lewis writes, “The Crusades could more accurately be described as a limited, belated and, in the last analysis, ineffectual response to the jihad – a failed attempt to recover by a Christian holy war what had been lost to a Muslim holy war.”

As for the Inquisition, there were several, spanning the 12th and 13th centuries, including some that were secular in nature. In 1998, the Vatican granted 30 scholars access to the archives of the Holy Office, the modern successor to the Inquisition. These scholars produced an 800-page report concluding the barbarism attributed to them was vastly overstated. “The Inquisition was not born out of desire to crush diversity or oppress people; it was rather an attempt to stop unjust executions,” notes historian Thomas F. Madden.

As for slavery and Jim Crow, Obama neglected two things: Slavery was universally practiced by all cultures for centuries, and Christians led the charge in abolishing slavery in the West. Moreover, millions of Christians opposed the institutionalized segregation of Jim Crow that was ultimately undone by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

None of this is meant to excuse abuses, or those who used Christianity as an excuse to perpetrate them. But note the president had to reach at least 50 years into America’s past – and nearly a thousand years into Church history – to find behavioral and cultural comparisons with what Islamist barbarians are doing right now. Furthermore, Christianity and America have engendered something most Muslim nations and Islam have not: genuine reformation.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal aptly addressed that reality. “It was nice of the President to give us a history lesson at the Prayer breakfast,” Jindal said. “Today, however, the issue right in front of his nose, in the here and now, is the terrorism of Radical Islam, the assassination of journalists, the beheading and burning alive of captives. We will be happy to keep an eye out for runaway Christians, but it would be nice if he would face the reality of the situation today. The Medieval Christian threat is under control, Mr. President. Please deal with the Radical Islamic threat today.”

And let’s not forget part of the Islamic threat includes enslavement – again happening right now. In December, ISIL published a pamphlet entitled “Questions and Answers on Taking Captives and Slaves.” Nigeria’s Boko Haram has also sold young girls into slavery, apparently unfazed by the fierce #BringBackOurGirls Twitter campaign launched against them.

Atrocities Jindal listed as well as the ongoing slave trade were all done in the name of Islam, even as our president has fought tooth and nail to avoid using that term. That is, until Obama finally admitted at the same National Prayer Breakfast that the world’s foremost terror threat is being engineered by those who “profess to stand up for Islam but instead betray it” – followed immediately by his denigration of Christianity. Moreover, it is interesting to note that when Obama was illuminating Christianity’s shortcomings he referred to them as being perpetrated “in the name of Christ.” Would he ever speak of the Islamist’s current depredations being perpetrated “in the name of Muhammad?”

Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, gets to the real bankruptcy behind the president’s invidious comparison. “When Christians act violently they are acting in opposition to the teachings of their founder, Jesus Christ,” he told Fox News' Todd Starnes. “They cannot cite a single verse in the New Testament that calls for violence against unbelievers. On the other hand, radical Islamists can point to a number of verses in the Koran calling for Muslims to ‘crucify the infidels.’”

Perhaps Obama could point to a group of Christians currently engaging in savagery similar to that of ISIL, denounced by the UN last Wednesday for engaging in “the systematic killing of children belonging to religious and ethnic minorities … including several cases of mass executions of boys, as well as reports of beheadings, crucifixions of children and burying children alive.”

How tone deaf is Obama? He made his inflammatory remarks at a breakfast commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide – during which more than a millionpredominantly Christian Armenians were exterminated by Muslim Turks.

It appears there is something profoundly lacking in the mental makeup of Obama. This is a man who spent more than two minutes at a Tribal Nations Conference in 2009 making introductory remarks and offering a “shout out” to a Medal of Honor recipient – before mentioning that Maj. Nidal Hasan, a Muslim, had just killed 13 and wounded 31 soldiers at Fort Hood. When Muslims murdered ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith and Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods in Benghazi in 2012, Obama handed off the crisis to then-Secretary of State Leon Panetta and Gen. Martin Dempsey, not to be heard from again until he turned up at a fundraiser in Las Vegas the following day. Literally minutes after announcing Muslims had beheaded American journalist James Foley, Obama went golfing – and blamed the ensuing firestorm on the press and “bad optics.”

All of those were appalling moments as well. And perhaps what Americans should fear most is what this president is capable of doing “in the name of Obama.”

Lessons From an Unenduring Majority

2015-02-09-9f2576e8.jpgPendulum swings aren't enduring

A 2002 book, “The Emerging Democratic Majority,” posited, as the title suggests, an “enduring Democratic majority” in the wake of “permanent changes” to America’s demography. Co-authored by John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira, the book’s central idea – the heart of the Emerging Democratic Majority (“EDM”) theory – was that the Democrat Party had amassed such a solid coalition of voters over the decades that the party could endure occasional bad election cycles and still retain control of the levers of government over the long haul. Recently revisiting his book, Judis noted it is, well, wrong. How times change.

Sadly for EDM – and every other Democrat-ideology theory forced into sustained contact with reality – the theory was flawed. It turns out – to paraphrase Mark Twain – news of the Republican Party’s death was greatly exaggerated. Whathasn’t been exaggerated is the magnitude of just how far the authors' theory missed the mark. The theory wasn’t just wrong: It was exactly wrong – a feat extremely difficult even for Democrats to pull off. As Noah Rothman notes at Hot Air, the fatal flaw in EDM is, “Voters expected results from the party in which they had vested new authority.” After the better part of a decade getting none – or should we say the wrongresults – voters learned to vote with their feet, walking out on Democrats at the polls.

The results of that reality check have been telling. Americans do not believe Democrats can provide economic security, let alone national security. The Democrat Party has become the party of racial, social and economic division, promoting class warfare as a primary means to gain political power, at the expense of all. It has accelerated national spending to a point of unfathomable debt, reincarnated the permanent welfare state, and turned public education into a 12-year babysitting service in which children simply bide time until they are turned out onto the streets of reality, lacking critical skills to become productive members of society.

In broad brushstrokes, in the wake of the contentious Barack Obama Era, Democrats have lost both the House and the Senate, lost control of 69 of 99 state-level legislative chambers, and lost countless officeholder seats. In short, the Democrat Party is in its worst position in 90 years. Americans no longer believe Democrats can deliver on any of their Pollyanna visions of the future.

Lest Republicans succumb to the same ruinous party-in-majority arrogance that (at least for the time being) wiped out the Democrats, we should warn that there’s a lesson here for everypolitician. The lesson is this: Ignoring or mistaking the will of the people can be hazardous to one’s political health.

Surveying the Democrat debris in the wake of the 2014 midterm Republican wave, the Chosen One commented, “To everyone that voted, I want you to know that I heard you.” The problem is that in his arrogance he didn’t hear. Immediately following his seemingly conciliatory statement, he punchlined, “To two-thirds of voters that chose not to participate in the process yesterday, I hear you, too.” Sure, Barry: It wasn’t popular will, it was just all those eeevil Republicans holding “the people” back from the polls. Any wonder why Democrats went 0-for-2 in Obama’s midterm cycles?

Summarizing the myriad lessons-learned littering the landscape of Democrats' political destruction, we offer the same advice to Democrats as we do to Republicans: Take time to do the hard thinking to connect the dots between our nation’s core founding principles and today’s voters. The notion that a party can have an enduring majority without understanding the fundamental principles upon which America was founded is mistaken. The same is true for a party that ignores or misunderstands the will of America’s voters. Listen to the Founders. Then listen to the voters. That’s how to create an “enduring majority.” Anything else is just another political theory on the ash heap of history.

OPINION IN BRIEF

The Gipper: “We need true tax reform that will at least make a start toward restoring for our children the American Dream that wealth is denied to no one, that each individual has the right to fly as high as his strength and ability will take him. … But we cannot have such reform while our tax policy is engineered by people who view the tax as a means of achieving changes in our social structure.”

Columnist Jeff Jacoby: “Perhaps the most chilling words ever written about book-burning were penned in 1821 by the great German poet Heinrich Heine: Dort wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen – ‘Where they burn books, they will in the end also burn people.’ … Just one day after news emerged of the book-burnings in the Islamic State’s so-called ‘caliphate,’ the jihadists released a video exulting in the horrific murder of Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, who was burned alive in a metal cage. There is something uniquely diabolical about setting books on fire, a lust to obliterate that almost ineluctably leads to even more dreadful evils. It is no coincidence that those obsessed with annihilating the physical expression of dangerous thoughts or teachings so often move on to annihilating the people who think or teach them. … Any brute can burn parchment, or ransack a library, or blow up a mosque, or bulldoze cultural treasures. But not even mighty armies can destroy the ideas they embody. … ISIS can’t either.”

FRC president Tony Perkins: “[Obama] didn’t mention his stop in Saudi Arabia on the way back to this country, and the fact that they rank by his own State Department as one of the worst abusers of religious freedom in the world. Did he publicly lecture the Saudis for their current climate of oppression? Did he try attending a Christian church during his stop there? I’m sure he didn’t because there are no Christian churches in Saudi Arabia. They’re illegal. Mr. President, the next time one of your family members becomes ill, try finding a local Muslim hospital. Or the next time your motorcade speeds through a town whose economy has been shuttered by your big government economic policies, try referring people to the local Islamic homeless shelter. In your next speech about families, maybe you could challenge Americans to consider adoption through the local Muslim adoption agency. The reality is, Christianity isn’t just the largest religion in America, it’s also the most charitable. And disheartening as this may be to your worldview, Mr. President, America was in fact founded on Christian truths and principles – and it’s that heritage that makes America an exceptional nation.”

The Real History of the Crusades

Crusader Knights Templar 3 (resized)

by, Thomas F. Madden | Shoebat Foundation & Shoebat.com | h/t Bill Muehlenberg

As a Crusade historian, I found the tranquil solitude of the ivory tower shattered by journalists, editors, and talk-show hosts on tight deadlines eager to get the real scoop. What were the Crusades?, they asked. The Islamic world has a just grievance against the West. Doesn’t the present violence, they persisted, have its roots in the Crusades’ brutal and unprovoked attacks against a sophisticated and tolerant Muslim world? In other words, aren’t the Crusades really to blame?

Osama bin Laden certainly thought so. In his various video performances, he never fails to describe the American war against terrorism as a new Crusade against Islam. Ex-president Bill Clinton has also fingered the Crusades as the root cause of the present conflict. In a speech at Georgetown University, he recounted (and embellished) a massacre of Jews after the Crusader conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 and informed his audience that the episode was still bitterly remembered in the Middle East. (Why Islamist terrorists should be upset about the killing of Jews was not explained.) Clinton took a beating on the nation’s editorial pages for wanting so much to blame the United States that he was willing to reach back to the Middle Ages. Yet no one disputed the ex-president’s fundamental premise.

Well, almost no one. Many historians had been trying to set the record straight on the Crusades long before Clinton discovered them. They are not revisionists, like the American historians who manufactured the Enola Gay exhibit, but mainstream scholars offering the fruit of several decades of very careful, very serious scholarship. For them, this is a “teaching moment,” an opportunity to explain the Crusades while people are actually listening. It won’t last long, so here goes.

The threat of Islam
Misconceptions about the Crusades are all too common. The Crusades are generally portrayed as a series of holy wars against Islam led by power-mad popes and fought by religious fanatics. They are supposed to have been the epitome of self-righteousness and intolerance, a black stain on the history of the Catholic Church in particular and Western civilization in general. A breed of proto-imperialists, the Crusaders introduced Western aggression to the peaceful Middle East and then deformed the enlightened Muslim culture, leaving it in ruins. For variations on this theme, one need not look far. See, for example, Steven Runciman’s famous three-volume epic, History of the Crusades, or the BBC/A&E documentary, The Crusades, hosted by Terry Jones. Both are terrible history yet wonderfully entertaining.

So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already be said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression—an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands.

Christians in the eleventh century were not paranoid fanatics. Muslims really were gunning for them. While Muslims can be peaceful, Islam was born in war and grew the same way. From the time of Mohammed, the means of Muslim expansion was always the sword. Muslim thought divides the world into two spheres, the Abode of Islam and the Abode of War. Christianity—and for that matter any other non-Muslim religion—has no abode. Christians and Jews can be tolerated within a Muslim state under Muslim rule. But, in traditional Islam, Christian and Jewish states must be destroyed and their lands conquered. When Mohammed was waging war against Mecca in the seventh century, Christianity was the dominant religion of power and wealth. As the faith of the Roman Empire, it spanned the entire Mediterranean, including the Middle East, where it was born. The Christian world, therefore, was a prime target for the earliest caliphs, and it would remain so for Muslim leaders for the next thousand years.

With enormous energy, the warriors of Islam struck out against the Christians shortly after Mohammed’s death. They were extremely successful. Palestine, Syria, and Egypt—once the most heavily Christian areas in the world—quickly succumbed. By the eighth century, Muslim armies had conquered all of Christian North Africa and Spain. In the eleventh century, the Seljuk Turks conquered Asia Minor (modern Turkey), which had been Christian since the time of St. Paul. The old Roman Empire, known to modern historians as the Byzantine Empire, was reduced to little more than Greece. In desperation, the emperor in Constantinople sent word to the Christians of western Europe asking them to aid their brothers and sisters in the East.

Understand the crusaders
That is what gave birth to the Crusades. They were not the brainchild of an ambitious pope or rapacious knights but a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam. The Crusades were that defense.

Pope Urban II called upon the knights of Christendom to push back the conquests of Islam at the Council of Clermont in 1095. The response was tremendous. Many thousands of warriors took the vow of the cross and prepared for war. Why did they do it? The answer to that question has been badly misunderstood. In the wake of the Enlightenment, it was usually asserted that Crusaders were merely lacklands and ne’er-do-wells who took advantage of an opportunity to rob and pillage in a faraway land. The Crusaders’ expressed sentiments of piety, self-sacrifice, and love for God were obviously not to be taken seriously. They were only a front for darker designs.

During the past two decades, computer-assisted charter studies have demolished that contrivance. Scholars have discovered that crusading knights were generally wealthy men with plenty of their own land in Europe. Nevertheless, they willingly gave up everything to undertake the holy mission. Crusading was not cheap. Even wealthy lords could easily impoverish themselves and their families by joining a Crusade. They did so not because they expected material wealth (which many of them had already) but because they hoped to store up treasure where rust and moth could not corrupt. They were keenly aware of their sinfulness and eager to undertake the hardships of the Crusade as a penitential act of charity and love. Europe is littered with thousands of medieval charters attesting to these sentiments, charters in which these men still speak to us today if we will listen. Of course, they were not opposed to capturing booty if it could be had. But the truth is that the Crusades were notoriously bad for plunder. A few people got rich, but the vast majority returned with nothing.

What really happened?
Urban II gave the Crusaders two goals, both of which would remain central to the eastern Crusades for centuries. The first was to rescue the Christians of the East. As his successor, Pope Innocent III, later wrote:

How does a man love according to divine precept his neighbor as himself when, knowing that his Christian brothers in faith and in name are held by the perfidious Muslims in strict confinement and weighed down by the yoke of heaviest servitude, he does not devote himself to the task of freeing them? … Is it by chance that you do not know that many thousands of Christians are bound in slavery and imprisoned by the Muslims, tortured with innumerable torments?
“Crusading,” Professor Jonathan Riley-Smith has rightly argued, was understood as an “an act of love”—in this case, the love of one’s neighbor. The Crusade was seen as an errand of mercy to right a terrible wrong. As Pope Innocent III wrote to the Knights Templar, “You carry out in deeds the words of the Gospel, ‘Greater love than this hath no man, that he lay down his life for his friends.’”

The second goal was the liberation of Jerusalem and the other places made holy by the life of Christ. The word crusade is modern. Medieval Crusaders saw themselves as pilgrims, performing acts of righteousness on their way to the Holy Sepulcher. The Crusade indulgence they received was canonically related to the pilgrimage indulgence. This goal was frequently described in feudal terms. When calling the Fifth Crusade in 1215, Innocent III wrote:

Consider most dear sons, consider carefully that if any temporal king was thrown out of his domain and perhaps captured, would he not, when he was restored to his pristine liberty and the time had come for dispensing justice look on his vassals as unfaithful and traitors … unless they had committed not only their property but also their persons to the task of freeing him? … And similarly will not Jesus Christ, the king of kings and lord of lords, whose servant you cannot deny being, who joined your soul to your body, who redeemed you with the Precious Blood … condemn you for the vice of ingratitude and the crime of infidelity if you neglect to help Him?
The re-conquest of Jerusalem, therefore, was not colonialism but an act of restoration and an open declaration of one’s love of God. Medieval men knew, of course, that God had the power to restore Jerusalem Himself—indeed, he had the power to restore the whole world to his rule. Yet as St. Bernard of Clairvaux preached, His refusal to do so was a blessing to His people:

Again I say, consider the Almighty’s goodness and pay heed to His plans of mercy. He puts Himself under obligation to you, or rather feigns to do so, that He can help you to satisfy your obligations toward Himself. … I call blessed the generation that can seize an opportunity of such rich indulgence as this.
It is often assumed that the central goal of the Crusades was forced conversion of the Muslim world. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the perspective of medieval Christians, Muslims were the enemies of Christ and his Church. It was the Crusaders’ task to defeat and defend against them. That was all. Muslims who lived in Crusader-won territories were generally allowed to retain their property and livelihood, and always their religion. Indeed, throughout the history of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, Muslim inhabitants far outnumbered the Catholics. It was not until the 13th century that the Franciscans began conversion efforts among Muslims. But these were mostly unsuccessful and finally abandoned. In any case, such efforts were by peaceful persuasion, not the threat of violence.

All apologies
The Crusades were wars, so it would be a mistake to characterize them as nothing but piety and good intentions. Like all warfare, the violence was brutal (although not as brutal as modern wars). There were mishaps, blunders, and crimes. These are usually well-remembered today. During the early days of the First Crusade in 1095, a ragtag band of Crusaders led by Count Emicho of Leiningen made its way down the Rhine, robbing and murdering all the Jews they could find. Without success, the local bishops attempted to stop the carnage. In the eyes of these warriors, the Jews, like the Muslims, were the enemies of Christ. Plundering and killing them, then, was no vice. Indeed, they believed it was a righteous deed, since the Jews’ money could be used to fund the Crusade to Jerusalem. But they were wrong, and the Church strongly condemned the anti-Jewish attacks.

Fifty years later, when the Second Crusade was gearing up, St. Bernard frequently preached that the Jews were not to be persecuted:

Ask anyone who knows the Sacred Scriptures what he finds foretold of the Jews in the Psalm. “Not for their destruction do I pray,” it says. The Jews are for us the living words of Scripture, for they remind us always of what our Lord suffered … Under Christian princes they endure a hard captivity, but “they only wait for the time of their deliverance.”
Nevertheless, a fellow Cistercian monk named Radulf stirred up people against the Rhineland Jews, despite numerous letters from Bernard demanding that he stop. At last Bernard was forced to travel to Germany himself, where he caught up with Radulf, sent him back to his convent, and ended the massacres.

It is often said that the roots of the Holocaust can be seen in these medieval pogroms. That may be. But if so, those roots are far deeper and more widespread than the Crusades. Jews perished during the Crusades, but the purpose of the Crusades was not to kill Jews. Quite the contrary: Popes, bishops, and preachers made it clear that the Jews of Europe were to be left unmolested. In a modern war, we call tragic deaths like these “collateral damage.” Even with smart technologies, the United States has killed far more innocents in our wars than the Crusaders ever could. But no one would seriously argue that the purpose of American wars is to kill women and children.

Crusaders 4 (resized)

The failure of the Crusades
By any reckoning, the First Crusade was a long shot. There was no leader, no chain of command, no supply lines, no detailed strategy. It was simply thousands of warriors marching deep into enemy territory, committed to a common cause. Many of them died, either in battle or through disease or starvation. It was a rough campaign, one that seemed always on the brink of disaster. Yet it was miraculously successful. By 1098, the Crusaders had restored Nicaea and Antioch to Christian rule. In July 1099, they conquered Jerusalem and began to build a Christian state in Palestine. The joy in Europe was unbridled. It seemed that the tide of history, which had lifted the Muslims to such heights, was now turning.

But it was not. When we think about the Middle Ages, it is easy to view Europe in light of what it became rather than what it was. The colossus of the medieval world was Islam, not Christendom. The Crusades are interesting largely because they were an attempt to counter that trend. But in five centuries of crusading, it was only the First Crusade that significantly rolled back the military progress of Islam. It was downhill from there.

When the Crusader County of Edessa fell to the Turks and Kurds in 1144, there was an enormous groundswell of support for a new Crusade in Europe. It was led by two kings, Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany, and preached by St. Bernard himself. It failed miserably. Most of the Crusaders were killed along the way. Those who made it to Jerusalem only made things worse by attacking Muslim Damascus, which formerly had been a strong ally of the Christians. In the wake of such a disaster, Christians across Europe were forced to accept not only the continued growth of Muslim power but the certainty that God was punishing the West for its sins. Lay piety movements sprouted up throughout Europe, all rooted in the desire to purify Christian society so that it might be worthy of victory in the East.

Crusading in the late twelfth century, therefore, became a total war effort. Every person, no matter how weak or poor, was called to help. Warriors were asked to sacrifice their wealth and, if need be, their lives for the defense of the Christian East. On the home front, all Christians were called to support the Crusades through prayer, fasting, and alms. Yet still the Muslims grew in strength. Saladin, the great unifier, had forged the Muslim Near East into a single entity, all the while preaching jihad against the Christians. In 1187 at the Battle of Hattin, his forces wiped out the combined armies of the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem and captured the precious relic of the True Cross. Defenseless, the Christian cities began surrendering one by one, culminating in the surrender of Jerusalem on October 2. Only a tiny handful of ports held out.

The response was the Third Crusade. It was led by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa of the German Empire, King Philip II Augustus of France, and King Richard I Lionheart of England. By any measure it was a grand affair, although not quite as grand as the Christians had hoped. The aged Frederick drowned while crossing a river on horseback, so his army returned home before reaching the Holy Land. Philip and Richard came by boat, but their incessant bickering only added to an already divisive situation on the ground in Palestine. After recapturing Acre, the king of France went home, where he busied himself carving up Richard’s French holdings. The Crusade, therefore, fell into Richard’s lap. A skilled warrior, gifted leader, and superb tactician, Richard led the Christian forces to victory after victory, eventually reconquering the entire coast. But Jerusalem was not on the coast, and after two abortive attempts to secure supply lines to the Holy City, Richard at last gave up. Promising to return one day, he struck a truce with Saladin that ensured peace in the region and free access to Jerusalem for unarmed pilgrims. But it was a bitter pill to swallow. The desire to restore Jerusalem to Christian rule and regain the True Cross remained intense throughout Europe.

The Crusades of the 13th century were larger, better funded, and better organized. But they too failed. The Fourth Crusade (1201-1204) ran aground when it was seduced into a web of Byzantine politics, which the Westerners never fully understood. They had made a detour to Constantinople to support an imperial claimant who promised great rewards and support for the Holy Land. Yet once he was on the throne of the Caesars, their benefactor found that he could not pay what he had promised. Thus betrayed by their Greek friends, in 1204 the Crusaders attacked, captured, and brutally sacked Constantinople, the greatest Christian city in the world. Pope Innocent III, who had previously excommunicated the entire Crusade, strongly denounced the Crusaders. But there was little else he could do. The tragic events of 1204 closed an iron door between Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox, a door that even today Pope John Paul II has been unable to reopen. It is a terrible irony that the Crusades, which were a direct result of the Catholic desire to rescue the Orthodox people, drove the two further—and perhaps irrevocably—apart.

The remainder of the 13th century’s Crusades did little better. The Fifth Crusade (1217-1221) managed briefly to capture Damietta in Egypt, but the Muslims eventually defeated the army and reoccupied the city. St. Louis IX of France led two Crusades in his life. The first also captured Damietta, but Louis was quickly outwitted by the Egyptians and forced to abandon the city. Although Louis was in the Holy Land for several years, spending freely on defensive works, he never achieved his fondest wish: to free Jerusalem. He was a much older man in 1270 when he led another Crusade to Tunis, where he died of a disease that ravaged the camp. After St. Louis’s death, the ruthless Muslim leaders, Baybars and Kalavun, waged a brutal jihad against the Christians in Palestine. By 1291, the Muslim forces had succeeded in killing or ejecting the last of the Crusaders, thus erasing the Crusader kingdom from the map. Despite numerous attempts and many more plans, Christian forces were never again able to gain a foothold in the region until the 19th century.

Europe’s fight for its life
One might think that three centuries of Christian defeats would have soured Europeans on the idea of Crusade. Not at all. In one sense, they had little alternative. Muslim kingdoms were becoming more, not less, powerful in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. The Ottoman Turks conquered not only their fellow Muslims, thus further unifying Islam, but also continued to press westward, capturing Constantinople and plunging deep into Europe itself. By the 15th century, the Crusades were no longer errands of mercy for a distant people but desperate attempts of one of the last remnants of Christendom to survive. Europeans began to ponder the real possibility that Islam would finally achieve its aim of conquering the entire Christian world. One of the great best-sellers of the time, Sebastian Brant’s The Ship of Fools, gave voice to this sentiment in a chapter titled “Of the Decline of the Faith”:

Our faith was strong in th’ Orient,
It ruled in all of Asia,
In Moorish lands and Africa.
But now for us these lands are gone
‘Twould even grieve the hardest stone …
Four sisters of our Church you find,
They’re of the patriarchic kind:
Constantinople, Alexandria,
Jerusalem, Antiochia.
But they’ve been forfeited and sacked
And soon the head will be attacked.
Of course, that is not what happened. But it very nearly did. In 1480, Sultan Mehmed II captured Otranto as a beachhead for his invasion of Italy. Rome was evacuated. Yet the sultan died shortly thereafter, and his plan died with him. In 1529, Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Vienna. If not for a run of freak rainstorms that delayed his progress and forced him to leave behind much of his artillery, it is virtually certain that the Turks would have taken the city. Germany, then, would have been at their mercy.

Yet, even while these close shaves were taking place, something else was brewing in Europe—something unprecedented in human history. The Renaissance, born from a strange mixture of Roman values, medieval piety, and a unique respect for commerce and entrepreneurialism, had led to other movements like humanism, the Scientific Revolution, and the Age of Exploration. Even while fighting for its life, Europe was preparing to expand on a global scale. The Protestant Reformation, which rejected the papacy and the doctrine of indulgence, made Crusades unthinkable for many Europeans, thus leaving the fighting to the Catholics. In 1571, a Holy League, which was itself a Crusade, defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto. Yet military victories like that remained rare. The Muslim threat was neutralized economically. As Europe grew in wealth and power, the once awesome and sophisticated Turks began to seem backward and pathetic—no longer worth a Crusade. The “Sick Man of Europe” limped along until the 20th century, when he finally expired, leaving behind the present mess of the modern Middle East.

From the safe distance of many centuries, it is easy enough to scowl in disgust at the Crusades. Religion, after all, is nothing to fight wars over. But we should be mindful that our medieval ancestors would have been equally disgusted by our infinitely more destructive wars fought in the name of political ideologies. And yet, both the medieval and the modern soldier fight ultimately for their own world and all that makes it up. Both are willing to suffer enormous sacrifice, provided that it is in the service of something they hold dear, something greater than themselves. Whether we admire the Crusaders or not, it is a fact that the world we know today would not exist without their efforts. The ancient faith of Christianity, with its respect for women and antipathy toward slavery, not only survived but flourished. Without the Crusades, it might well have followed Zoroastrianism, another of Islam’s rivals, into extinction.

Ukraine ExplosionUkraine: Artillery Fire, Not ‘Tactical Nuke’ Attack, Sets Off Large Donetsk Explosion

[Editor’s note: A number of sites, such as Alex Jones’ Info Wars, suggested that the explosion was nuclear, but that seems to be a stretch. Nuclear detonations create significant EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) that would almost certainly have destroyed the electronic cameras recording the events.]

On Sunday night, a series of YouTube videos appear to show a large explosion in Donetsk, Ukraine (several can be watched here). However, it wasn’t a “tactical nuclear weapon,” as some social media users claimed, but just a big blast–reportedly Ukrainian army artillery fire hitting an ammunition depot held by the rebel Donetsk People’s Republic.

Videos that were uploaded Feb. 8 show a massive explosion going off in the distance, with an orange-red fireball lighting up the night sky.

While many details remain unclear, preliminary reports say it was a an artillery attack on a weapons depot owned by the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic. According to Ukrainian news site TSN.ua, right-wing politician Dmitry Yarosh said the blast killed about “200 terrorists,” destroyed 20 Grad rockets, and trucks filled with ammunition. New York Times Warn About Russia “Nuclear Saber Rattling” in Ukraine

By JOHN J. MEARSHEIMERFEB. The possibility that Mr. Putin might end up making nuclear threats may seem remote, but if the goal of arming Ukraine is to drive up the costs of Russian interference and eventually put Moscow in an acute situation, it cannot be ruled out. If Western pressure succeeded and Mr. Putin felt desperate, he would have a powerful incentive to try to rescue the situation by rattling the nuclear saber.

Our understanding of the mechanisms of escalation in crises and war is limited at best, although we know the risks are considerable. Pushing a nuclear-armed Russia into a corner would be playing with fire.

Advocates of arming Ukraine recognize the escalation problem, which is why they stress giving Kiev “defensive,” not “offensive,” weapons. Unfortunately, there is no useful distinction between these categories: All weapons can be used for attacking and defending. The West can be sure, though, that Moscow will not see those American weapons as “defensive,” given that Washington is determined to reverse the status quo in eastern Ukraine.

The only way to solve the Ukraine crisis is diplomatically, not militarily. Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, seems to recognize that fact, as she has said Germany will not ship arms to Kiev. Her problem, however, is that she does not know how to bring the crisis to an end. (Read more from this story HERE)

Obama and SharptonWhen the Rev. Al Sharpton couldn’t make it to Nelson Mandela ’s funeral in South Africa, President Barack Obama brought him back a little souvenir.

The memento, a program from the funeral, hangs on a wall in Mr. Sharpton’s nondescript offices above Midtown Manhattan.

“To Rev. Sharpton,” Mr. Obama wrote. “A fellow warrior for justice!”

Much has been made of Mr. Sharpton’s reinvention, the remaking of a local, sometimes divisive activist into a polished insider with a national TV show and a direct line to the White House.

Yet, at home in New York City, as tensions simmered last year over race, police conduct, and the deaths of Eric Garner and police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, Mr. Sharpton’s new role has been tested. (Read more about what Obama gave Al Sharpton HERE)
