Trump Reverses Obama on Iran. There’s no doubt that Trump’s vision of the Middle East is more in keeping with U.S. interests than Obama’s!-Posted on The Patriot Post-By Rich Lowry-On March 16, 2026:
Donald Trump has always been the anti-Obama.
He rose in opposition to President Obama and has reversed many of his Democratic predecessor’s policies. But perhaps no Trump undertaking runs so directly counter to Obama’s approach than the Iran war.
Obama sought to accommodate the Iranian regime, while Trump hopes to topple it.
Obama tolerated an Iranian nuclear program, even if one theoretically constrained by a nuclear deal, whereas Trump wants to destroy it.
Obama facilitated the rise of Iranian power in the region. Trump, in contrast, is endeavoring to crush it.
Back then, Obama operated on the basis of conciliation and caution. Today, Trump is all about confrontation and assertion.
We don’t know how Trump’s operation in Iran will turn out. There are many ways it could go sideways. But there’s no doubt that Trump’s vision of the Middle East — with Israel and the Arab states putting their enmity behind them, while the Iranian regime is defanged or eliminated — is more in keeping with U.S. interests than Obama’s.
The Obama theory was that Iran could be made into a responsible regional player if the nuclear issue were set aside, and if the U.S. forged a balance of power between Sunni powers in the region and Shia Iran. The 2015 Iran nuclear deal restricted Iranian nuclear activity, while allowing the regime to sit on the cusp of a nuclear weapon and giving it major sanctions relief. The Obama administration literally sent pallets of cash to Tehran, and the relaxation of sanctions gave the regime more runway to build up its missile arsenal and its terrorist proxies.
Trump 1.0 disrupted this model by tearing up the nuclear agreement and creating a “maximum pressure” campaign to squeeze the regime financially. The campaign had kneecapped Iranian oil revenue, when Joe Biden came into office in 2020 hoping to revive the Obama strategy.
Before October 7, Iranian power had reached a high-water mark. Its proxies dotted the region, from Gaza to Lebanon to Iraq to Syria to Yemen. It was working with U.S. adversaries China and Russia. It was a regional leader, just as Obama had imagined, but not a moderate one. Iran wielded its proxies as instruments of an Islamic radicalism threatening to Israel and U.S. interests.
In retrospect, October 7 looks to be for Islamic extremists what Pearl Harbor was for the Japanese — a brilliant tactical success that carried within it the seeds of strategic defeat.
Israel went about systematically degrading Iran’s proxy forces and then hit Iran’s defenses in retaliation for Iranian missile launches. This paved the way for the twelve-day war, and Trump’s strike on Iran, Operation Midnight Hammer. The operation was a signal that we weren’t going to trust or verify — we were going to blow up as much of the Iranian nuclear program as possible.
Operation Epic Fury is the second act. It seeks to destroy Iran’s nuclear program and is going after the foundations of Iranian power unaddressed in the Obama nuclear deal — namely, the missile program and other elements of the Iranian military.
If it achieves maximal success, there won’t be any Iranian regime to deal with any longer; failing that, it can still reduce Iranian power and influence (assuming Iran isn’t allowed to establish de facto control over the Strait of Hormuz).
The hope is the war will open the way to build on the Abraham Accords. That first-term Trump initiative rejected the conventional wisdom that the U.S. had to distance itself from Israel to make diplomatic progress. Instead, the U.S. could embrace Israel in a way that was anathema to Obama and bring together the Jewish state with its Gulf allies, while marginalizing Iran.
Much depends on successfully prosecuting Operation Epic Fury, but what Trump is trying to achieve would be better for the peace and security of the region than the policy of one of the least worthy Nobel Peace Prize winners in history.

Sir Edmund Burke, in a speech to the Electors of Bristol in 1774, said: “Your representative owes you not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.”
That may not sit well in an age of polling and clamor for direct democracy, but the reality is this: the duty of statesmen is not to follow public opinion, but to lead it. In moments of crisis, leaders are not called to read the polls — they are called to rise above them.
And that is exactly what President Donald Trump has done to this point in the war with Iran. When asked about public polling — where most surveys show a majority opposing the war — Trump responded, “I don’t care about polling.”
That statement gained my immediate attention, because in almost every conversation or meeting I have had with the president, he often references the polls — favorable polls.
I note this not as criticism, but to commend the president for stepping into the role of a statesman who leads in the direction the nation needs to go, regardless of the political consequences.
The stock market — very familiar territory for the president — has gone a bit wobbly. Gas prices have risen quickly, though they remain below the peak Americans experienced in the summer of 2022, when the average gallon approached $5. Some congressional Republicans are also expressing concern about the possible impact on the midterm elections.
These are big issues — in the short term. That is why most administrations confronting the Iranian nuclear threat sought to contain it, if they could not avoid it altogether.
To use a familiar phrase from American politics over the last 60 or 70 years, they simply kicked the can down the road so the next administration — or the next generation — would deal with it.
Donald Trump concluded there was no road left.
Open sources suggest Iran possessed roughly 1,000 pounds of uranium enriched to 60% before the launch of Operation Epic Fury. Iran was racing to reach the 90% weapons-grade level — enough material for roughly 10 nuclear warheads. Enough to hold the world hostage, if not destroy large parts of it.
If there has been a justifiable war since World War II, this may be it. This is not defending oil-rich countries made wealthy by American dependence. This is confronting a direct threat to our security and to that of our natural ally, Israel.
When the leadership of a rogue regime repeatedly calls America the “Great Satan,” vows to destroy us, and sponsors repeated terrorist attacks against Americans — at what point should we believe them?
As president, Donald Trump had the constitutional authority to act. Based on the available facts, the war is justified, and the stated purpose is right: peace in the Middle East and justice for the Iranian people.
President Trump should be commended for taking the regime at its word and responding — not because it was politically popular, but because it was justified, militarily and morally.
And in doing so, he illustrated the very principle Burke described 250 years ago: a leader who governs not by the polls, but by judgment.

Major activist groups protesting war in Iran have had millions of dollars funneled their direction through George Soros-backed groups in the last decade.
Leftist groups such as the ANSWER coalition and Code Pink deployed protests almost immediately following the launch of U.S. strikes on targets in Iran. Several of those anti-war nonprofits organized a “mass mobilization call” as part of that response to Operation Epic Fury, including MoveOn and Win Without War — two organizations heavily funded by the Soros network through his Open Society Foundations and Open Society Policy Institute.
Tax filings and grant disclosures between 2016 and 2024 showed that Soros sources have donated a combined total of more than $6 million to those activist organizations, with more than $4 million contributed in just the last four years.
Both groups lobbied the Biden administration in 2021 to rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement as part of a large coalition of left-wing conglomerates, including the Open Society Foundations and Indivisible.
MoveOn, a self-described “challenge to America,” describes its activism as “progressive power through advocacy and elections” that has “been on the front lines of resistance to Trump and the GOP’s toxic agenda.”
The organization credits itself with “game-changing victories,” including support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and is an official partner of the national “No Kings” protests. MoveOn’s lobbying wing, MoveOn.org Civic Action, has received more than $3.4 million from the Open Society Foundations since 2016, and the organization has received over $2 million in funding since 2022 alone, for the stated purposes of “non-partisan policy advocacy,” supporting “social welfare activities,” and “policy advocacy on reproductive rights.”
MoveOn overall directly took in $670,000 from the Soros-backed Tides Foundation between 2017 and 2024, according to the organization’s own gift disclosures.
MoveOn did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
Win Without War, according to its website, works to promote a “progressive national security strategy that prioritizes human security and diplomacy over war.” Prior to Operation Epic Fury, the organization released a statement saying strikes against Iran would be “another reminder of the President’s perception of himself as a would-be king.” Following the failure of the War Powers Act in both chambers of Congress, Win Without War stated that, “Congress failed one of its most basic duties” by not preventing President Donald Trump from continuing the strikes on Iran.

Despite calling itself a “national grassroots organization,” Win Without War has received over $2 million in grants from the Soros-backed Open Society Policy Center. The organization received $600,000 in 2020 and 2022, as well as $1 million in 2024.
The Open Society Policy Center granted the money to support the organization’s “policy advocacy” and “social welfare activities,” according to tax records between 2020 and 2024. Win Without War did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
The Open Society Foundations has also invested heavily in Win Without War’s parent organization, the Center for International Policy. The organization, according to its website, is “committed to making a peaceful, just, and sustainable world the central pursuit of U.S. foreign policy.”
CIP says that it “does not accept funding from the U.S. government or private corporations” and is “not beholden to special interests.” The Open Society Foundations has granted the organization nearly $4.9 million since 2016 and $2 million since 2021, according to its website’s “Awarded Grants” page.
The DCNF was unable to reach CIP for a comment. Including the CIP’s grants, the Open Society Foundations alone has donated a combined total of $10.6 million to these groups since 2016 and $5,7 million since 2022.
The Soros family is no stranger to funding “grassroots” leftist activism. The Open Society Foundations has awarded Indivisible, the No Kings protests’ lead organizer, over $7 million since 2018 and over $4 million since 2022. Win Without War and MoveOn are also listed as official partners of the protests. The Tides Center, a companion organization to the Tides Foundation working “to advance social justice and equity,” in 2023 financially sponsored pro-Hamas activist groups celebrating the terrorist organization’s Oct. 7 attacks in Israel.
The Tides Center has also advocated for multiple left-wing agenda items including anti-police activism, abortion expansion, and transgender sex changes.
The Open Society Foundations did not provide a comment to the DCNF. Indivisible and the Tides media team did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
