“U.S. forces rescued an American aviator trapped in Iran in a daring mission early Sunday morning, according to two U.S. officials. The crew member had been stuck in Iran for more than 24 hours. A specialized commando force extracted the crew member with the help of air cover, one of the officials said. 

All forces involved in the rescue are safely out of Iranian airspace, according to the officials. The aviator, who has not yet been identified, was one of two aircrew flying in an F-15E Strike Eagle when it was shot down by Iranian forces on Friday. 

A U.S. military team rescued the other crew member on Friday and that person is now safe. The rescue comes less than two days before President Trump’s deadline for Iran to negotiate a deal with the United States or open the Strait of Hormuz.”

“The downing of the F-15E fighter jet marks the first time a U.S. fighter jet has been shot down in combat in over 20 years, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Houston Cantwell, a former F-16 fighter pilot, told The Associated Press. 

At least four U.S. fighter jets have been shot down since the Iran war began on Feb. 28, but three of those were in a friendly-fire incident, the Pentagon said. On March 1, three American F-15s were "mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses," U.S. Central Command said at the time, and there were no casualties from that incident.  

CBS News national security analyst Aaron MacLean on Friday provided insight on how the search and rescue operation for the missing F-15E crew member might play out, explaining the U.S. military uses highly trained forces known as Air Force Pararescuemen who are "dedicated" for such missions.

The missing crew member would have had first-aid gear and "training in how to administer self-care in case they're injured," MacLean explained, and would be equipped with communications gear to "let their chain of command know that they are OK, and ideally participate in their own rescue."

“Finding the downed airman, who had been hiding with little more than a pistol as defense, had been the U.S. military’s highest priority over the last 48 hours.

The mission to save the crew member employed hundreds of special forces troops, dozens of U.S. warplanes, helicopters, and cyber, space and other intelligence capabilities. 

U.S. attack aircraft dropped bombs and opened fire on Iranian convoys to keep them away from the area where the airman was hiding. As U.S. forces converged on the downed airman, a firefight erupted, two former senior military officials briefed on the operation said. 

The airman was equipped with a beacon and a secure communication device for coordinating with forces mounting the rescue. 

A senior U.S. military official described the mission to rescue the airman as one of the most challenging and complex in the history of U.S. special operations. 

In a final twist after the weapons officer was rescued, two transport planes that would carry the commandos and the airmen to safety got stuck at a remote base in Iran. Commanders decided to fly in three new planes to extract all the U.S. military personnel and the airmen, and they blew up the two disabled planes rather than have them fall into Iranian hands. 

The F-15E fighter jet was shot down in a region of Iran where there is significant opposition to the Iranian government As a result, the airman may have been able to rely on locals for shelter and assistance.

Vast mountains deep inside enemy territory and only a pistol: that is all this injured US airman had for survival before he was rescued in a daring mission on Sunday.

Extracted by US special forces before he was captured by Iranian forces, the still unidentified weapons systems officer’s rescue mission went on for 36 hours across the rugged Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province in southwest Iran.

According to reports, this “highly respected colonel" — as hailed by President Donald Trump — survived by hiding in the mountains. Trump has called his rescue the “most daring search and rescue operations in US history".

As details of the operation emerge, his survival is now being painted as extraordinary followed by a sophisticated intelligence deception to enable his rescue.

WHAT WENT DOWN?

On April 3, when an advanced F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was downed by a ground-launched projectile, one pilot was reportedly rescued soon after the crash but the second crew member remained missing.

The F-15E uses a CKU-5 rocket propellant system to blast the airman’s seat through the canopy at a staggering 200 metres per second squared. While sophisticated, this system carries a high probability of spinal fractures and other severe injuries.

American officials said the airman was indeed wounded following his ejection but remained capable of walking and, for 36 hours, he disappeared into the mountains. Armed with only a standard-issue pistol and, perhaps, a flare, his survival depended on his SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape) training.

All US aviators are equipped with a combat vest containing a radio/GPS-coded beacon, minimal food and water, and first-aid material, but in terms of defence, he was almost entirely vulnerable while being “hunted down" by Iranian forces closing in “by the hour".

HOW DID HE SURVIVE?

The Telegraph reported that the US airman’s survival depended on who found him first: his own side or the other side.

Realising the immense value of capturing him alive, Iranian authorities urged local tribesmen and citizens to join security forces in combing the countryside and even offering a reward for his discovery. Social media footage appeared to show dozens of local residents rising to the challenge, searching the arid, mountainous terrain where he was believed to be hiding.

But he managed to evade them all by hiding within a mountain crevice. Later, despite being injured, he hiked up a 7,000-foot ridgeline to reach a position where extraction might be possible.

HOW WAS HE RESCUED?

The Telegraph said while the US airman navigated the physical terrain, the CIA was tracking him to provide the rescue teams with the necessary window of opportunity.

The report said the CIA launched a sophisticated “deception campaign", designed to mislead Iranian authorities into believing he had already been located or recovered in a different area. The feint proved successful, allowing the White House and Pentagon to maintain an “uncharacteristic silence" while the real rescue operation took place.

It said behind the scenes, President Trump remained in the Oval Office receiving constant updates on the airman’s status as the rescue force prepared to cross the border. The final extraction was anything but quiet and involved “dozens of aircraft" and hundreds of special operations troops, spearheaded by the elite Navy SEAL Team 6 – the same unit famed for the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden.

To protect the “extraction zone", The Telegraph reported, the US military established a massive air corridor as MQ-9 Reaper drones and fast jets circled overhead providing a shield for the special forces. These assets were authorised to use “overwhelming firepower", striking any military-aged person deemed a threat within a 3-km radius of the operation.

The final moments of the rescue were reportedly a scene of intense combat. As the airman broke cover to meet the rescue team, US forces dropped bombs and opened fire on approaching Iranian military convoys. A firefight erupted but he was successfully loaded onto a transport plane.
