“No one can predict the long-term outcome of the so-called Arab Spring with assurance. Up to now, that uncertainty has protected democratizing optimists, who argue that the Middle East’s internal turmoil, and accompanying set-backs to American interests in the short and medium term, will be balanced out by democratic evolution over time.

In effect, the optimists’ core scenario — which envisions Islamist parties tamed and transformed into peaceful liberal democrats by multi-decade entanglement in the constraints of electoral politics–protects the democratizing vision from disconfirmation.

No matter how bad things look for Western interests today, optimists can say that this is actually part of the plan. Only through the rough and tumble of bickering and necessary compromise over constitutions, elections, and day-to-day legislative politics can a genuinely liberal democracy emerge, we are told.

If Islamists or renascent Arab nationalists get elected and rule poorly–taking their countries to war, trampling minority rights, or running their economies into the ground–eventually they will suffer at the ballot box, thus bringing a slow but steady trend toward liberalization and peace. This has been the apparently disconfirmable argument-in-the-face-of-adversity of those who look upon the so-called Arab Spring with hope.

It may still be impossible to see the future with certainty, but Joshua Kurlantzick’s just-published overview of the emerging world-wide trend away from democracy gives us the best argument yet against optimism about even the long-term outcome of the current turmoil in the Middle East. Not that this is Kurlantzick’s purpose. On the contrary, his essay, “The Great Democracy Meltdown,” has little to say about the Middle East, focusing instead on an emerging trend of democratic reversals in the rest of the world. And for all his pessimism, Kurlantzick is an activist democratizer himself.

Yet Kurlantzick’s powerful analysis undermines optimism about the so-called Arab Spring in two important ways.

First, Kurlantzick shows that it’s wrong to assume that democratization deepens with time. That may have been true for the past few decades, as democracy spread throughout the world and measures of deeper liberalization in countries holding regular elections grew. Yet that worldwide process has now reversed. For example, the number of “highly defective democracies,” countries that hold elections but are in fact close to being failed states, autocracies, or both (think Pakistan), doubled between 2006 and 2010. This trend challenges those who argue that elections can come first–that instead of postponing votes until a deeper social liberalization has taken hold, elections themselves serve as the motor of liberalizing social transformation. That hurry-up-and-vote strategy is looking a lot less reliable today.

Second, although Kurlantzick does not make the connection himself, the forces he points to as driving the world-wide trend away from democracy can already be seen at work in the Middle East. Classically, for example, democratization is supposed to be driven by economic development and the emerging middle classes it creates. Yet Kurlantzick points out that in many developing countries, the new middle class is vastly outweighed by the very poor. Once these poor get the vote, they elect populist leaders who undermine liberty and raid the wealth of the middle class. That turns the middle class away from democracy and prompts them to support military coups, in hopes of keeping the poor at bay.

We forget it now, but one reason democracy took hold so successfully in England is that the franchise was extended only gradually, as wealth and education spread through the population as a whole. America had a near-universal franchise from the start, yet we also had a great deal more social equality than England early on. East Asia, where economic development has been relatively broad-based, has also been a stronghold of democratization.

Contrast Egypt, where the tiny middle class that sparked the Arab Spring is vastly outnumbered by the extremely poor.

Those poor voters, who know little of liberalism, supported the position of the Muslim Brotherhood in the recent constitutional referendum, to the consternation of the middle class.

In fact, Egypt’s middle class revolutionaries are already pressuring the military to delay elections, so as to hold the Muslim Brotherhood at bay.

We see here, in nucleus, the pattern now undermining democracy worldwide.

The other key factor in Kurlantzick’s analysis is the growing influence of autocratic powers, who are now actively working to counter democracy and to spread their own pattern of decidedly illiberal rule world-wide instead.

We can see that dynamic at work in the Middle East, which is currently caught in a tug-of-war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The Saudis, who feel abandoned by the United States, are gathering an alliance of mostly monarchical states to counter revolutionary trends.

On the other side, the Iranians are trying to pull the region toward their own Islamist model, forging an alliance across sectarian lines with the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, for example.

Either way this breaks–toward Saudi autocracy or Iranian Islamism — the outlook for authentic liberal democracy is poor.

Even if we cannot know the future with certainty, then, Kurlantzick’s analysis shows the long-term scenario for the Middle East sketched out by democratizing optimists lacks credibility. That scenario depends on a series of hidden and highly questionable assumptions about the relative irreversibility of social liberalization once the practice of elections take hold. It turns out, however, that as democracy spreads to unaccustomed territories, those who’ve warned against moving to elections in advance of deep-lying social liberalization are being shown to have had a point.

Will the Arab Spring win out in the end?

While the long-term possibility cannot be entirely discounted, democratizing optimism is looking a great deal shakier as a basis for making policy in the present.”

“Princeton’s Cornel West, one of the most famous black intellectuals in America, says that President Obama is afraid of “free black men.” Because of Obama’s atypical upbringing, West says, “when he meets these independent black folk who have a history of slavery, Jim Crow, Jane Crow, and so on, he is very apprehensive. He has a certain rootlessness, a deracination.”

With whom does the rootless cosmopolitan-in-chief find himself most comfortable?

Jews and rich white men, says West. No surprise given the professor’s view that Obama is a “black mascot” and a “black puppet” for Wall Street and corporate America.

Meanwhile, Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking Democrat in the House, offers a far more familiar if no more persuasive take:

“The president’s problems are in large measure because of his skin color.”

If forced to choose, I’d say West has the slightly more plausible position, only insofar as there’s an argument to be made that Obama has been a puppet of Wall Street. What that has to do with his skin color is beyond me (a community organizer with a phobia about “black folk,” married to a black woman, strikes me as the recipe for a hilarious Tyler Perry sitcom).

Still, I find the whole thing fascinating. Here are West and Clyburn, two of the most influential black people in America, bitterly clinging, as Obama might say, to ideologically racial views — He’s not black enough! He’s too black for racist Americans! — that have less and less relevance. This is not to say that there is no racial animus against Obama. Of course there is. But is it significant, as Clyburn suggests? Well, certainly not enough to keep him from being elected president of the United States (!) or being the establishment favorite to be re-elected.

Clyburn’s take strikes me as the left-wing version of the right-wing theory — popularized by Dinesh D’Souza — that everything Obama does can be explained by his “post-colonial” worldview.

Simpler explanations are available. Obama is a liberal Democrat. He does things a white liberal Democrat would do, and he receives mostly the same opposition a white liberal Democrat would receive. If a Pres. John Edwards (shudder) had rammed through the economic stimulus or “EdwardsCare” the same way Obama did, Republicans wouldn’t say, “Well, since he’s white, it’s okay.”

Take the tea parties, which have been accused of racism by the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus, mainstream-media outlets, and entertainer-activists such as Janeane Garofalo, who proclaimed they are “about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up.”

So, after nearly two years of “experts” telling us that the typical tea-party member is two holes in a white sheet shy of being a Klansman, guess who is arguably the most popular tea-party candidate for president? Herman Cain, a black businessman.

Perhaps the most telling sign of the changing racial landscape comes with voting patterns, though not at the ballot box. Blacks — particularly among the young and educated — are voting with their feet by leaving cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit in huge numbers and moving to places like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Dallas. Clement Price, a Rutgers history professor, told the New York Times, “The black urban experience has essentially lost its appeal with blacks in America.”

(One reason that might be the case: Black entrepreneurialism skyrocketed from 2002-07, according to the Census. Perhaps the rise in black-owned small businesses breeds disenchantment with big-city bureaucracy?)

For years, liberals have glibly smeared the GOP as racist because it is disproportionately Southern. Obviously there are historical reasons behind the charge, but in 2011?

If the region is so racist, why are blacks so eager to flee to the less “progressive” South?

Blacks are still largely lockstep Democratic voters and will probably remain so for a while. But when listening to the likes of West and Clyburn, never mind silly white liberals like Garofalo, one cannot help but be reassured that the ground is shifting under their feet as inexorably as it shifted under the feet of racists more than a generation ago.

“The other shoe has dropped. As I predicted in a previous column:

“When truth is being suppressed, people who refuse to accept the deception have every reason to be grateful to a well-known public figure who loudly trumpets his similar skepticism. But once the grateful public gathers behind him in sufficient numbers, his response to events can be portrayed as authoritative. Then it’s just a matter of trotting out some contrivance intended to placate public opinion, one that superficially appears to resolve the matter, but without addressing what’s really at stake. By the time the bellwether conveniently announces that he’s satisfied, the grateful grass-roots support he has received will have made him enough of a public opinion authority to discourage and stigmatize those tempted to challenge him. This will assure that, unlike Don Quixote’s pasteboard helmet, the placatory contrivance is never made to undergo anything like real scrutiny.”

On Wednesday this week, after refusing the simple request for several years; after expending several million dollars in lawyer’s fees to battle anyone who dared pursue it; after vindictively engineering the court-martial and imprisonment of an honorable soldier who stood by his sworn oath to defend the Constitution of the United States; Barack Obama finally gave in and released what purports to be a copy of his full and complete birth certificate.

This constitutes incontrovertible proof that he, his media claque (including snopes.com, etc.) and the gullible or cowardly politicians (Democrat and Republican alike) who repeatedly claimed that he had already done so, were lying. The people they derided and ridiculed as “birthers” were telling the truth. The Certification of Live Birth published on the Internet, which these liars repeatedly referred to as his birth certificate, was an abridged certification that omitted the vital information needed to verify that he was born on U.S. soil, and could therefore claim, jus soli, to be a citizen at birth.

The Certificate of Live Birth released on Wednesday specifies the hospital where he was born and includes the signature of the attending physician. Assuming that it is not a convenient fabrication, it constitutes prima facie evidence as to the matter of fact involved in the eligibility controversy. The liars and dupes who asserted or accepted the Certification of Live Birth as his birth certificate will now contend that this ought to end the controversy. But since they were either lying or deceived up to now, it hardly matters what they contend. They ought properly to be accorded little or no credibility.

But until it has been submitted to forensic examination by unbiased and trustworthy experts, the same must be said of the document released Wednesday. Several years of now incontrovertibly proven deceit have generated a poisonous atmosphere of distrust. It cannot be dispelled except by careful steps, intended to reassure the many score millions of Americans who must now deeply resent the studied and deliberate campaign of deception and ridicule waged against them.

But more telling than this distrust of the evidence is the inevitable distrust of Barack Obama himself. Throughout this whole controversy, I and others like me have pointed to the fact that Obama could have ended it at once by releasing the requested documentation. We rightly pointed out that, having repeatedly sworn to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, he had the moral duty and obligation to show, and be seen to show, respect for its authority. Impressed by this obligation, what sane, responsible public official would deliberately, stubbornly refuse to do so, particularly after assuming the presidency, the office most singularly responsible for preserving the Constitution’s integrity?

Well aware of this logic, some people speculated that the actual birth certificate contained facts or information that would embarrass Obama, either by contradicting his own version of events or in some other way. But the document released this week is unexceptional in that respect. Assuming that it is what it purports to be, it provides no explanation whatsoever for Obama’s stubborn campaign to withhold it from public scrutiny. Why would a sane, responsible public official, secure in his electoral claim to the nation’s highest office, behave in a manner that resists and therefore derogates from the Constitution’s authority? Why would he contrive, or allow others to contrive, the professional ruin and imprisonment of an honorable military officer who sought only to ascertain (as his officer’s oath requires) that the orders he received came from a constitutionally lawful source of authority?

The Constitution derives from and represents the sovereignty of the American people. Each of Obama’s responsible fellow citizens has the right to exercise a share in that sovereignty. Why, therefore, would a sane and responsible public official order or permit his lawyers and cronies to demean the standing and deride the concerns of these citizens as they seek to assure respect for the Supreme Law of the Land, the highest permanent expression of the sovereign will of the people of the United States?

Except we find a rational explanation for his conduct, Obama’s actions must appear to be the result of some irrational and defensive pride, some insanely arrogant sense that the oath, duties and lawful obligations of his position do not apply to him, as they have to the others who have occupied the office he claims. But we are in fairness forbidden to suspect Obama’s moral sanity unless we also question the rationality of the politicians, judges and media personalities who joined in the campaign of lies, ridicule and derision intended to quell public insistence that due respect be shown for requirements plainly stated in the Constitution. In addition to demeaning the status and responsibilities of American citizenship, some of these people went so far as to suggest that the Constitution can be amended de facto by simple majority vote in a general election, casting aside the procedures for amendment the Constitution establishes.

As a government based on the consent and sovereignty of its citizens, the United States of America is the longest lived democratic constitutional republic known to history. That longevity is due, in large part, to the fact that for almost the whole of its existence its responsible citizens and especially its public officials worked to seed and cultivate a patriotic love of the Constitution. Such constitutional patriotism embodies and stabilizes the people’s sovereignty, so that, as Abraham Lincoln said, a government “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal … can long endure.” Never before in our history has a clique of so-called leaders acted in a way that systematically questions and undermines the responsibility of all Americans – plain citizens, military officers and public officials alike – to show and be seen to show respect for the Constitution’s authority.

The issue of Obama’s eligibility is important only and precisely because such confirmed and visible respect for the Constitution is critical to the stability and survival of government of, by and for the people. Donald Trump’s unseemly boasting aside, it is thanks to the insistent common sense of ordinary Americans that Barack Obama has finally been compelled to take the first step toward apparently submitting to the nation’s vital and honorable tradition in this respect.

Is this the beginning of the end of the elitists’deliberate attempt to overthrow the sovereignty of the American people?

That remains to be seen. Having by this first victory revealed the deliberate deception the elitists sought to impose upon the nation, citizens of goodwill must continue in their common-sense determination to assure that the eligibility issue is fully resolved, in a manner that respects the grave issue of constitutional integrity that is at stake.

The GOP leaders in the House of Representatives kicked off the new term by reading the Constitution of the United States into the record. Such lip service is not purely worthless, so long as the words it contains are implemented with integrity.

In that spirit, will the House now move to demand proper forensic examination of the new evidence Obama has released?

Will they put fealty to the Constitution above all fearful political considerations?

Will they seek by proper constitutional means to assure a fair hearing for the issue, by due process of law, and including the issue of law the courts have refused to address, to wit: Does the phrase “natural born citizen” mean that both parents must have been U.S. citizens at the time of the child’s birth?

Deception, gullibility and cowardice have prevented resolution of this whole matter for far too long. It is time for the elected representatives of the people to show themselves worthy of the courage and common sense of the people they are supposed to represent.

Then and only then will this controversy be properly resolved; then and only then will the Constitution gain the victory.

And it will not be a triumph for one person’s vanity and ambition, or for any self-serving faction or party. Rather, it will be a victory for the sovereignty and self-government of the whole free people of the United States.”

“This is the first of three articles on the criminal complaint that scanner-expert Doug Vogt filed last week with the FBI.

An international expert on scanners and document-imaging software filed a 22-page criminal complaint with the FBI, charging that the long-form birth certificate released by the White House is criminally fraudulent.

“What the Obama administration released is a PDF image that they are trying to pass off as a Certificate of Live Birth Long Form printed on green security paper by the Hawaiian Health Department,” Doug Vogt writes, “but this form is a created forgery.”

Vogt’s criminal complaint asserts: “I have irrefutably proven that the Certificate of Live Birth that President Obama presented to the world on April 27, 2011, is a fraudulently created document put together using the Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator programs, and the creation of this forgery of a public document constitutes a class B felony in Hawaii and multiple violations under U.S. Code section Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 47, Sec.1028, and therefore an impeachable offense.”

When the Obama birth certificate “forgery” comes to the public’s attention, Vogt continues, “It will surpass all previous scandals including the Watergate scandal of the Nixon administration.”

Since 1993, Vogt has owned Archive Index Systems Inc., in Bellevue, Wash., a company that sells a wide variety of document scanners worldwide and develops document imaging software.

Before that, Vogt owned Nova Typesetting for 11 years.

Curved and non-curved lines of type:

Vogt says that the curved surface on the left margin of the Obama birth certificate suggests the county employee who did the original scanning of the document did not take the individual page out of the binder.

“The result is that all the pages in that book display a parallax distorted image of the lines and type,” he says.

He claims, however, that the information typed into the form does not curve like the printed text on the form itself.

As seen in Figure 1 below, the word “Sex” on the printed form curves into the binder, while the typed word “Male” does not, Vogt argues.

Vogt observes that the word “Sex” printed on the form slants more to the left than the typed-in word “Male” below it.

He claims to have found another parallax problem in line 6c, “Name of Hospital or Institution.”

The word “Name” printed on the form and the lines above and below drop down two pixels while the typed-in hospital name, “Kapiolani,” does not, he says.

“The conclusion you must come to is that the typed-in form was superimposed over an existing original Certificate of Live Birth form,” Vogt writes.

Vogt contends that the forger placed the typed-in text over the printed copy, creating a composite from a variety of original birth certificate forms.

“In fact, since I found some of the form headings scanned in as binary and grayscale, the form itself is a composite but the person who created it did not flatten the image of the blank form and save it as one file before they started placing the typewriter text on the composite form,” he says. “The individual(s) who perpetrated this forgery could not evidently find a blank form in the clerk’s imaging database, so they were forced to clean up existing forms and overlay the typewriter type we see here.”

‘Halo’:

A “white-halo effect” around some of the printed and typed-in letters on the form convinced Vogt that the document was a forgery.

If the birth certificate were a scan, as the White House maintained, it should have been a grayscale image in which no haloing effect would be visible, he reasons

The next image is a color scan in which there is no halo effect, with the green color of the security paper touching the edge of the type:

Vogt’s argument is that a grayscale scan or a color image scan, as seen above, can be converted to a black-and-white binary image.

However, the presence of grayscale and binary images on the same scan is a clear indication of document manipulation, he contends.

“The important thing to remember is that you cannot have grayscale and binary on the same scan unless the image is a composite,” Vogt argues. “This means that different components of the whole image are made up of smaller parts.”

What produced the white-halo effect?

“We know that all the original Certificates of Live Birth were microfilmed because we can see the Nordyke certificate (below) was microfilmed,” he explains. “Then, some time after 2004, the paper original copies, in post binder books, were scanned using a commercial document scanner with a flat bed, scanned as grayscale images.”

Vogt concludes that the forger was forced to convert the microfilmed images of original birth certificates to grayscale, as seen below,  before the originals could be used to form a composite.

Next, Vogt says, the forger converted the grayscale converted image to a binary image and placed it onto a background form image.

“The problem was that there were still image values for the pixels around the placed type,” Vogt observes, “so when he/she placed the type image over the background and instructed the program to bring the type “forward” it blanked out the background image, hence the haloing effect around the type.”

‘Another smoking gun’:

Finally, Vogt contends that the birth certificate released by the White House is loaded with binary and grayscale letters, “which is just another smoking gun that this form is a forgery.”

Some of the lines and some of the boxes on the White House birth certificate were scanned using grayscale, but only some of the form headings and some of the letters were grayscale, he said.

Vogt produced the image below to illustrate his point:

Vogt explains:

“You will notice the H and al in Hospital, and I in Institution. If and again the h and l in hospital were grayscale images, but the rest of the line is binary. The typewriter line below was scanned in as a binary image. I can also tell you for certainty that the form type was scanned in at a lower resolution (≤200 dpi). This is because of the size of the pixels on the letters were such that the openings on the a and s on the first line are not visible and filled in. This may also further indicate that forger took some of the type images from the microfilmed copies.”

As another example of grayscale and binary type on the same line, Vogt selected the name “BARACK” from the form’s box “1a,” as show below:

“For some reason the ‘R’ is a grayscale image and the rest is binary,” he writes. “That means the ‘R’ was originally on the form and the rest was not until it was added.”

Vogt asks why the forger would leave some grayscale images in the form and not just erase the whole form.

He answer is that the forger needed to leave the grayscale images to re-establish the baseline of the type in order to place the superimposed binary type properly, in line with the other typing on the form.

“This also told me that the forger was an experienced graphic artist,” Vogt concludes.

Another example was the birth certificate number itself, as seen below:

“This is just another example of a cut and paste job,” Vogt noted. “It also means we do not know what the real birth certificate number is, if there even is one.”

Vogt’s verdict:

Vogt concludes that the Obama birth certificate document released by the White House on April 27 is an “outrageous and obvious” fraud.

“You could truly call this a Frankenstein Certificate of Live Birth,” he says in summary.

“It is a logical conclusion,” he says, “that since President Barack Obama felt it necessary to have a Certificate of Live Birth forged for himself then we must conclude that there is in fact no birth certificate in Hawaii and therefore he was not born inside the United States, as the Constitution requires, and he knew it and others also knew it but wanted him in office for whatever reason.”

“As we approach next year’s presidential elections, the chances of President Barack Obama being ousted by a rival from either side of the political divide are low, according to Thanos Papasavvas, the head of currency management at Investec Asset Management.

“History is very much on the side of the incumbent President and unless we have a double-dip recession with a significant increase in unemployment I don’t believe Obama will lose 2012,” Papasavvas said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday.

“On the economic side, any signs of a deteriorating economic environment will see the Fed enacting QE3 (the third round of quantitative easing, or creating money) and hence indirectly reducing the probability of the economy derailing Obama,” Papasavvas added.

With the Republicans divided and no major rival yet to emerge, Papasavvas believes the American right wing will keep its powder dry for 2016 when four years of fiscal austerity will play into their hands.

“With no credible Republican heavyweight to face Obama, even those who have indicated their intent to run like Mitt Romney are unlikely to burn significant political or actual capital for 2012 preferring instead to wait for the 2016 election,” said Papasavvas.

Strong Dollar Policy?

John Snow, the US treasury Secretary during George W. Bush’s first term as president, spent a lot of time talking up his strong dollar credentials.

The problem for Snow was that no one believed a word he said as he stood by and allowed the period of benign neglect in which the dollar remained weak as the US economy recovered from September 11 and the collapse of the dotcom bubble.

Now Tim Geithner is spending a lot of time talking up his strong dollar credentials and the market is beginning to think the current US Treasury Secretary is beginning to sound an awful lot like Snow during the first term of the Bush administration.

“The market has been interpreting the Geithner comments on the dollar at face value, this is now changing as the evidence of a weaker dollar makes people skeptical about rhetoric,” Papasavvas said.

“What Tim Geithner actually means is that he wants to protect the purchasing power of Americans, not intervene to make the dollar rise against foreign currencies,” he added.

“It must be remembered that the US is a domestically-biased economy. The big costs like healthcare are not exposed to a weak dollar. What Geithner is trying to do is stop domestic inflation that will be felt by the average American,” he added.”

“A closer look at the Moscow-funded Russia Today television channel, whose host, American Adam Kokesh, was arrested after a disruption last Saturday at the Jefferson Memorial, reveals some interesting and disturbing corporate and foreign intelligence connections.

As AIM reported, Kokesh, who hosts the show, “Adam Vs. The Man,” joined with pro-Marxist agitator Medea Benjamin to disrupt Memorial Day weekend activities. “I had to spend 4 hours in jail,” whined Kokesh. Now he is threatening to do it again this coming Saturday.

Under pressure from false media reports that Kokesh was just “dancing” and had been unfairly roughed up by police, U.S. Park Police officials are now saying that they are investigating whether officers were “too aggressive” in handling Kokesh and other demonstrators.

As we explained in a column, what happened at the memorial was a deliberately designed provocation, planned in advance by Kokesh, Benjamin, and their comrades. The video shows officers warning them to stop and arresting them when they didn’t. They were arrested because the law prohibits activities that interfere with the solemn atmosphere at the memorials.

A sympathetic profile of Kokesh, a veteran who served in Iraq, gives some of the background necessary to understanding his motivation. It says:

“in February 2006, two days before he was to be deployed on his second tour, he was told by his commanding officer that he was under investigation for bringing back a pistol he had purchased from an Iraqi policeman. His car had been broken into on campus and the pistol was missing. He was charged with three felonies, but accepted a plea bargain for disturbing the peace—a misdemeanor—and his case was passed along to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. After an eight-month investigation, he was demoted from sergeant to corporal and given an honorary discharge.”

This incident reportedly played a role in his decision to participate in protests as a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. His Facebook page when he ran for Congress as a Republican describes him as a Ron Paul supporter and “freedom fighter spreading the message of liberty.”

Subsequently, the article said, a Marine Corp three-person review board found “significant negative” conduct on the part of Kokesh and recommended a “general discharge under honorable conditions” for him.

A website for the group, American Patriots Against Kokesh, which opposed his run for office, accused him of working with several different Marxist groups.

This may be why Russia Today, which regularly features Marxist groups on the air, gave Kokesh a show on its English-language affiliate. RT treats fringe characters such as Gloria La Riva of the Party for Socialism and Liberation as major political figures, even using her to defend Castro’s spies jailed in the U.S.

But Kokesh is just one part of this growing propaganda operation. Russia Today has various “partners” in the media business, including the Huffington Post, which is now part of AOL, and What REALLY Happened, a web site that features such stories as “Israel’s Whores in Congress” and “Reflections of Comrade Fidel.” The web site mostly features articles about a number of conspiracies, with a focus on the “inside job” theory that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were staged by the U.S. Government.

Other RT “partners” include Izvestia, which was the official publication of the old Soviet regime, and Trud, the mouthpiece for Soviet labor unions.

A partnership with RT means that the channel runs articles from those “news” organizations.

The acquisition of the Huffington Post by AOL produced a media group claiming to reach 117 Million Americans and 270 million globally. For its part, Russia Today is one of the foreign networks, along with Al-Jazeera, carried by the American taxpayer-supported MHz Networks, into various U.S. media markets.

But the focus on Kokesh has missed the addition of another American to the line-up. Thom Hartmann, who describes himself as the leading “progressive” radio talk show host in the U.S., is hosting a show called “The Big Picture” on the Russian channel.

In a defense of its programming, the channel has also pointed out, “Cenk Uygur of the Young Turks was coming on RT long before MSNBC snatched him up to fill a seat in their very own anchor chair.”

The embrace of the channel by the liberal-left, which regularly criticizes Fox News, a private media company in the U.S., is shocking. The relationship demonstrates that the liberal media have no real objection to government sponsorship or funding of media companies, even when the money comes from authoritarian regimes such as Vladimir Putin’s in Russia. But the controversy goes beyond the simple matter of progressives sharing a political ideology with those, including Putin, a former KGB intelligence officer, behind the Russian channel.

“America is enjoying euphoria of victory over Communism in the Cold War, but Russians say the war is still going on,” notes Konstantin Preobrazhensky, a former Soviet KGB officer. He says the channel is serving the interests of the Kremlin, especially its intelligence agencies, by spreading disinformation about Russian intentions in domestic and foreign affairs.

During the Cold War, it was customary for the Soviet intelligence services, led by the KGB, to use American and Western news outlets and personnel in operations against the United States. Preobrazhensky says nothing has really changed, except that Russia Today television is a more overt way of carrying out the aims of the Kremlin.

This is why AIM published the column, “Russian TV Sounds Like Soviet TV.”

It is so overt that RT hired an alleged Russian spy, Katia Zatuliveter, who is in the process of being deported from Britain. Oleg Gordievsky, the KGB’s former London station chief, directly accused the Russian of spying, saying the 25-year-old woman was working undercover for the Russian foreign intelligence, the SVR, and gathered information about British naval bases around the world.

Nevertheless, RT now features her as a “contributor,” where she criticized the West and its “double-standard” on protests and demonstrations. This is the basic Kremlin propaganda line, which is designed to inhibit Americans from criticizing human rights violations in Russia.

RT covered a conference I sponsored at the National Press Club to deal primarily with the influence of Al-Jazeera. A minor focus was Russia Today’s anti-American programming. Out of courtesy, I agreed to be interviewed on camera. But I was not surprised to discovered that the finished product, reported by Kaeyln Forde, ignored all of the points I made about the channel’s links to the Russian intelligence service.

Shaun Walker of the British newspaper The Independent has discussed this issue in the context of an article noting that the Russian channel has tried to de-emphasize the connection to Moscow by referring to the channel as RT and not Russia Today. Its programs for the American audience are called “RT America.” Since last year, he points out, anchors and correspondents have been told they must refer to it only as “RT,” never “Russia Today,” which has “led some to wonder what the Russians are up to in the U.S.”

The answer, quite clearly, is to mask the hand of Moscow and its intelligence agencies in what goes on the air.

Walker adds, “There have been suspicions, even among some of those inside the channel, that the aim might be a Kremlin, or even a Russian intelligence plan to stir dissent in the US. At the very least, it seems an attempt by Russia to get its own back on a Western world that often lectures Moscow on democracy and human rights, and shine a light on what it sees as the sore points for the US.”

This was the apparent purpose of the provocation launched by Kokesh and Medea Benjamin of Code Pink at the Jefferson Memorial last Saturday. By breaking the law against demonstrations and disorderly conduct at the memorials, they knew they would be arrested and then be able to charge that they were victims of a “police state” just the sort of propaganda that Moscow wants, in order to divert attention away from the Kremlin’s human rights record. Not surprisingly, RT covered the demonstration extensively.

“Several journalists at the channel have told The Independent that while some coverage of problems in Russia and sensitive issues is allowed, any direct criticism or questioning of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin or President Dmitry Medvedev is strictly prohibited,” Walker reported.

In the September 10, 2010, piece, Walker said, “Even before the recent spy scandal about Russian ‘illegals’ in the United States, western intelligence services have been wary about Russia Today’s correspondents.”

Like Al-Jazeera, RT has hired a number of Western and American faces, many of them attractive females.

RT’s on-air talent includes a number of Americans, including Staci Bivens, a former CNN producer; Lindsay France, formerly with CNN and ABC-TV affiliate KAPP; Lindsay Garfield, formerly with NBC’s Meet the Press; and Sean Thomas, who worked for the NBC affiliate, KSEE in Fresno, California.

The bio for Kaelyn Forde, the RT reporter who covered my conference, notes that she “comes to RT from Spanish-language news network teleSUR.” The bio fails to disclose that teleSUR was launched by Marxist Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.

The bio goes on, “Kaelyn’s interests include investigative and multimedia reporting. In 2009, she produced a full-length investigative documentary, Detrás del Golpe (Behind the Coup), which unmasked the architects of the 2009 Honduran coup d’état and how it was subsequently legitimized in Washington.”

This was, of course, the Hugo Chavez line. Chavez wanted the world to believe that the overthrow of his ally, Manuel “Mel” Zelaya, was a dangerous military coup. In fact, elements of the Honduras government directed the military to oust him from power after he committed illegal and unconstitutional acts.

Rep. Connie Mack noted that teleSUR signed agreements with Al-Jazeera, thereby “creating a global television network for terrorists and other enemies of freedom.”

A “journalist” from teleSUR would seem to be a natural fit for Russia Today television.

Exhibiting some of the provocative behavior that Kokesh would demonstrate at the Jefferson Memorial last Saturday, Forde was arrested by police last November as she was “covering” a leftist demonstration against the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, where members of foreign militaries are trained by U.S. forces. The institute, once known as the Schools of the Americas, has been a long-time target of Marxist forces. An entire organization, SOA Watch, is devoted to trying to close it down.

Forde, insisting she was a member of the press, was nevertheless charged with unlawful assembly, demonstrating without a permit and failing to obey a police order to disperse.

RT said it paid a fine to have Forde, whose real name is Kaelyn Forde Eckenrode, and a cameraman, Jonathan R. Conway, who was also arrested, freed from jail. A newspaper account said, “Eckenrode was arrested in front of the gas station after a tense exchange with a police officer who told her to leave.”

Columbus (Georgia) Solicitor General Ben Richardson was quoted as saying, “She does comply with police officers, but she does it after some time. The question was whether that constituted reasonable substantial compliance to police. We see why they arrested her, but we have a bigger burden of reasonable doubt.” Hence, charges were ultimately dropped.

It has been quite a road for Forde, whose “Linked in” profile says that she started out at NBC News, where she “Tackled the tough logistics of newsgathering for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, The Today Show and MSNBC.”

“Markets Suffer Severe Drop During 1^st Week of May.

Just weeks ago DAPAC reported on SEIU official Steve Lerner’s stated plans to crash the stock market beginning May 1. It now appears that Mr. Lerner’s plan may be playing out right before our eyes. It also appears he may be receiving help from none other than Obama friend, former Nazi henchman and current Marxist one-worlder, George Soros.

On May 1^st, the SEIU joined hands with the Communist Party USA and the Maoist Progressive Labor Party (PLP), staging Marxist May Day parades across the country.

When market bells opened the following day, May 2^nd, the New York Stock Exchange was limping along, struggling vainly toward the much promised recovery. That all ended nearly as soon as trading began. By Friday, May 6, some trade publications were describing the previous 5 days as “a week of carnage”!

In addition, George Soros’ Quantum Hedge Fund literally dumped their silver holdings, causing one of the largest silver price crashes in history. The market began following suit, and large scale dumps of most precious metals continued throughout the week, further depressing the already weakened market numbers.

All this forces the question, why is it that every time something drastic and disastrous happens in our economy, the names of Obama friends prominently pop up?

Audio files have recently been released which outline a very real plan to collapse the American economy – including crashing the stock market – in an effort to finally and irrevocably bring about the fundamental change, radical change, Obama promised.

This sinister plan apparently launched on schedule and ran through a tumultuous week, replete with a Cinco de Mayo and “Black Friday” commodities stampede. It was complete with rabidly anti-capitalist, pro-Communist “Red” parades co-sponsored by the SEIU and the AFL-CIO. The New York Stock Exchange plunged as planned all during the first week of May, with oil down 15%, widespread “commodities carnage” – and evidence suggests seditious the plan may go all the way to the White House.

Steve Lerner is well known in union thug circles as the guy who uses intimidation to ensure success. March 19, 2011 Steve Lerner met with Abby Scher of Brooklyn College CUNY, Gerardo Dominguez of the Mexican American Workers Association, John Atols of ACORN and a number of other openly Marxist, Obama-faction activists. Surrounded by fellow radicals, Mr. Lerner was unaware he was being recorded, and clearly felt comfortable enough to lay out his step by step plan already underway to “put a boot in the wheel” of the American economy – crashing the stock market and orchestrating a complete banking collapse – in an effort to force Marxism upon the masses. Full audio with transcripts of Lerner’s plot can be found on You Tube, at The Blaze website where this story broke, and all over the Internet.

Lerner identifies this as a union plan, presumably crafted by his long-time cronies at the SEIU, and he calls for the aid of other Obama-faction leaders and community organizers. But evidence suggests Lerner may already have the assistance of Administration insiders and the Community Organizer in Chief – Barack Hussein Obama.

White House visitor logs show that Stephen Lerner has visited the White House repeatedly over the last two years. At least one of these visits was arranged by the office of then White House Political Director Patrick Gaspard – one of Lerner’s previous SEIU colleagues and former leader of one of the most notoriously militant SEIU chapters. Gaspard, not coincidentally, is a close Obama advisor who is now the Executive Director of the Democratic National Party and a key player on Obama’s 2012 election team.

Obama made clear in a now infamous 2008 campaign rally that SEIU’s agenda is his agenda.

Obama led a SEIU member chant after recalling how he started his early “organizing career” with SEIU troops on the ground, and went on to declare, “Just imagine what we can do together. Just imagine a President whose life’s work is your (SEIU’s) work”! It seems we no longer need to imagine. The present occupant of the Oval Office has brought sedition to the presidency – the highest office in the land. Barack Obama’s own front group “Organizing for America” helped stage the recent Wisconsin “Days of Rage” protests that were notable for union-led violence, death threats and radical acts of intimidation, and now it appears he and his Administration may be connected to a far-left coalition actively plotting to collapse the American economy.

My friends, Stephen Lerner’s closed-attendance discussion at The Left Forum was not some simple academic and theoretical discussion of what revolutionary resistance might look like. It was a high-level presentation of a very real, well thought out plan for economic terrorism already in play, and a well-received recruitment call to leftwing radical leaders of other Obama-faction organizations to join him.

Stephen Lerner’s terrorist plans, and actions of incitement and enlistment are outright sedition, all potentially prosecutable offenses.

In normal circumstances, we could count on the Department of Justice to investigate and uphold the rule of law. But alas, as we have seen with Eric Holder’s refusal to prosecute colleagues, supporters and friends of Obama, including the election fraud and racist thuggery at the hands of the New Black Panthers, the once venerable DOJ is a rogue agency in a rogue Administration, and can no longer be trusted to do its duty.

Why have not the murky, possibly orchestrated causes behind the terrible economic crisis of the 2008 national fiscal collapse been investigated and disclosed to the nation?

No, we must instead call upon this 112^th Congress, and demand an immediate investigation of Stephen Lerner, and all of those who participated in his conspiratorial call to anarchy, sedition and economic terrorism on March 19.

That investigation must include disclosure of all the participants and plotters lurking behind the scenes who are actively working to disrupt and destroy America – even if that road leads us to Obama billionaire funders like George Soros, and directly to the White House.

This is no longer a matter of speculation. The Marxist plan to smash our republic is alive and active within the corridors of power in America as never before. Their plans to launch their latest assault on these United States evidently launched, of course, Marxist May Day – May 1, 2011 – and have been sounded to their foot soldiers in a very real and potentially calamitous call as just the beginning of their designs to harm our nation.

I warned when Obama first appeared on the national scene that he was at the least an academic Marxist surrounded by radicals, and a menace to the security, sovereignty and prosperity of the nation.

Now there is evidence in abundance to confirm my judgment. We MUST force Congress to act NOW – before the evil forces that mean to destroy America are able to fully implement their plans.

The very survival of our country is at stake if we do not take seriously the threat within. I implore you, fax Congress TODAY.

I’m prompted to write this blog by Glenn Beck’s argument that America is Judeo-Christian.  Beck is extremely knowledgeable on what is taking place, but on this I disagree. America’s Declaration of Independence includes the phrase, “to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle them” does not assume a religious origin.  The Declaration was signed by Congress’ representatives of the thirteen colonies.  In the First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution, we read, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . .”

While America’s morals come from Judeo-Christian values, to say that America is Judeo-Christian is an important misstatement of facts,  an idea that has gotten America in a heap of trouble, and can get us in far more trouble than we can handle.

It took close to a billion years of life on our planet to produce the person you are, the most aware of all life.  While the law of the jungle applies to all other life, the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle us to God-given rights, the U. S. Constitution says, to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and specifically, that no law respecting the establishment of religion  be enacted, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

Religion is based on superhuman agencies involving devotional and ritual observances dating back to ancient times.  Compare ancient times to today’s world. In just the past 100 years, our world has considerably revved up.  Ancient beliefs may be comfortable,  but they block us from addressing current issues—cause us to live in the comfort of a past that we know, thus to prevent us from facing stark reality: our world is on fire and religion is fanning the flames. Clearly, America should remain with natural law and Nature’s God—respecting the establishment of religion, but also respecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  By fighting ancient religious beliefs in the Middle East, we are contributing to a building disaster, causing faithful adherents of ancient religious beliefs opposed to Judeo-Christian beliefs to hate both all the more.

I’ve learned the hard way. I cut from the herd—went on my own.  Everyone I knew thought I was nuts, including Uncle Sam. The IRS was going to teach me a lesson I’d never forget.  Natural law and Nature’s God has become the law of the jungle in America.   Uncle Sam ended hanging himself with his own rope.  In my case, natural law won. Nature’s God is for the individual.  The Judeo-Christian religions, based on  ancient doctrines and dogmas, are the problem, not the cure.

It is all a matter of conscious awareness, of which we are individually in control.  To a large extent, and most unfortunately, we are ruled by fear of the unknown and comforted by that which we’ve known for ages.  We’re living in the past, but time waits for no man.

Chance favors the prepared mind. The New Age was born in 1925, in the year that Hitler wrote Mein Kampf, the year Congress authorized the Nazi tax collector, the IRS, to examine personal records for income tax purposes, the year that  physicist Werner Heisenberg published his uncertainty principle (the forerunner of quantum mechanics).  I was born in 1925.

My makeup, according astrologer Jean Avery, “He becomes the water-bearer by walking to the beat of a different drummer. He may be the person to bring back information that has been lost to civilization for centuries.”  According to Numerology and The Divine Triangle, as to my path of destiny number 7, I may be the person to “reveal some of the mysteries of life to a waiting world.” And, according to Astrologer’s Handbook, with my Saturn, the learning planet, trine Pluto, the generational planet, “This trine gives the natives the ability to understand the laws by which subtle forces are organized, enabling them to use those laws consciously or unconsciously. It favors those who work in such fields as physics . . .”  

According to The Physics of Consciousness, under “A God for Tomorrow,” “Now we see that the independent existence of matter and the absoluteness of space were false dogma. But it has only been with the advent quantum theory that we have discovered proof that we exist as something more than pieces of matter. In the development of quantum theory, the observer emerges as a co-equal in the foundry of creation. . . The tests of Bell’s theorem have shown us that objective reality as it has been conceived is not the true fabric of reality. . . The observer interacts with matter. Consciousness, the substance of this new-found reality that defines the observer, has fundamental existence.  It is the quantum mind that is the basic reality.”  

Bell’s theorem has proven that it is not the supernatural God of Islam, Judaism, or Christianity that rules the universe, but as written in America’s Declaration, natural law and Nature’s God.

Bell’s theorem has shown science that once two subatomic particles connect, they are always in communication, no matter if on the opposite extremes of the universe.  Science is now aware that there is more than the time-space dimension.  

Somebody please tell Glenn that instead of talking about  Jews, Christians, and  the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood, none of which is going to bring peace, it going to take learning that it is all the orthodoxy’s flapdoodle to keep people under its control that brings on war. 

How long is it going to take for Obama to become aware that there is no such thing as a supernatural God, or objective reality, or collective salvation?  We are all subjective and according to one definition of anarchy, a theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal and that proposes the voluntary and cooperative association of individuals and groups as the principal mode of organized society, this is our future.  Welcome to the Age of Aquarius.

With talk of Unions running the show, most folks aren't seeing the other side of the picture.  That being, George Soros and the Sandler Banking Family.  Our government for years, longer than my short life, have been catering to special interest groups.  The future of our country needs to be by the people for the people and stay that way.

Unions donate to the Democrats and the benefits only help the Union workers, yet our taxes go to pay for not being represented by the unions.  In fact we're loathed by the unions.  The Democrats dance to Soros and Sandler like puppets on a string, knowing they'll be taken care of and again we loose.

Today, the Tea Party has punched a hole in this structure as the Tea Party is not playing along and the big money changers have not infiltrated the Tea Party.  This is the time to move on stopping all donations from special interests groups, all businesses and all foreign interests.  Business exists to feed its own interests therefore, donations from any business is a selfish donation.  Donations by legal US citizens, with a cap, will keep the playing field real and eliminate specials interests such as Soros and the Sandlers.  

In this way, should your children go to war, it's a war of US interest and not one that helps the bottom line of Special interests.  Nothing could be more ill than the death of one child because it's good for our banking or hedge fund companies.  Nothing could be further from God and Country.

“Which is worse: bad leadership or no leadership?

That’s a question for a Congress that remains AWOL while young Americans continue to be placed in harm’s way in military missions increasingly divorced from American national interests. Like developments in Afghanistan and Iraq that cry out for a public examination of what U.S. forces are doing overseas, President Obama’s incoherent war in Libya brings increasing urgency to the question.

To recap, the president unilaterally ordered air strikes in Libya despite the fact that Moammar Qaddafi’s regime had neither attacked nor threatened the United States and that the regime was considered a valuable American ally in the war on terror by the Obama administration, just as it had been by the Bush administration. Indeed, the Bush State Department had opened the foreign-aid spigot to Qaddafi, and settled past terrorism claims against him, after the dictator forswore the pursuit of nuclear weapons and shared intelligence on al-Qaeda supporters in his country. Those supporters largely hail from eastern Libya, which — surprise! — is now the stronghold of an opposition affectionately called “the rebels” by pro-interventionists.

That opposition is better understood as the Libyan mujahideen — Libya having sent more jihadists to fight against American forces in Iraq than any other country proportional to its population.

If you’re not dizzy enough yet, President Obama started out even more enthusiastic about Qaddafi (an Obama admirer) than was his predecessor. Foreign aid, including military aid to the brutal regime, was increased.

Moreover, when violent unrest broke out, Obama gave Qaddafi the same kid-gloves treatment he extended to anti-American dictators repressing their opponents in Iran and Syria.

Soon, though, Obama convinced himself that Qaddafi was about to fall. This misimpression was compounded by European pressure (driven by the continent’s dependency on Libyan oil reserves) and by what Victor Davis Hanson sagely diagnosed as a desire to avoid being seen as once again trailing rather than leading events, as in the case of Egypt. All this together induced a lethal flip-turn, and the president announced that it was time for Qaddafi to go.

Yet, Obama’s unprovoked military offensive, in conjunction with NATO, is ostensibly divorced from this stated American goal. We began attacking Qaddafi’s forces and his compound while disavowing any intention to oust him. We are there only to protect civilians, administration officials maintain. Meanwhile, attacks against Qaddafi intensify,“rebel” atrocities against black Africans are ignored, and intervention hawks like Sen. John McCain (until recently asupporter of the U.S. embrace of Qaddafi) advocate that the rebels be armed and trained, notwithstanding their known terrorism ties.

Obama did not seek congressional authorization to commence combat operations in Libya. In compliance with the 1973 War Powers Act (WPA), however, he notified Congress about his commitment of U.S. forces.

This triggered the 60-day time limit within which the WPA instructs a president to either obtain congressional approval or withdraw U.S. forces. That deadline came and went on May 21 with no congressional authorization and no movement to wind down the mission — even though, when he began bombing, Obama had assured Americans that the mission would last “days, not weeks.”

The WPA is probably unconstitutional. It was enacted over the veto of an embattled Pres. Richard Nixon, and, ever since, presidents of both parties have regarded it as non-binding, though they have substantially complied with its terms to avoid a constitutional showdown. I could exhaust you with a couple of thousand words on the relative merits of the arguments pro and con, but that would be pointless, for two reasons.

First, WPA disputes between the political branches are not justiciable.

The federal courts are not going to intervene, certainly not with a left-wing Democrat in the White House. Such controversies were meant by the Framers to be worked out politically, not by resort to the courts.

Which gets us to the second and more important point: The WPA is craven. It is designed to allow Congress to carp from the sidelines or stay silent without being accountable. Presidents are implicitly encouraged to initiate hostilities, and the issue becomes whether they comply with the WPA’s arbitrary deadlines. Of course, in the absence of an attack (or at least the threat of an attack) on the United States, presidents should never take the nation to war without the approval of the people’s representatives; the salient issue in debates over the use of force is whether war is necessary to advance some vital American interest. If the stakes involve something important enough to go to war over, fidgeting over 60-day time frames is frivolous.

The WPA is sideshow. The Framers vested Congress with not only the power to declare war but also with the power of the purse. Federal legislators don’t need to wait 60 days. They can vote at any time to deny public funds to a presidentially initiated war, and they can deny the aggression political legitimacy by voting against the use of force. But such congressional action requires leadership rather than gamesmanship. With rare exceptions, today’s lawmakers would rather lie low in the tall grass.

Our young men and women deserve much better. In the absence of congressional debate over the Libyan intervention, the administration has not been compelled to clarify American goals.

If the true objective is protecting civilians, how does doing so in Libya advance American interests?

Are there limiting principles, or is our financially strapped nation now obliged to be the world’s policeman and, ultimately, the world’s nation-builder?

Why Libya but not Iran, Syria, Yemen, Tunisia, Bahrain, Sudan, etc.?

And if, as Stanley Kurtz persuasively argues, the Obama administration is stealthily sowing a novel“responsibility to protect” doctrine into international law, what are its ramifications?

Why wouldn’t it, for example, justify other uninvolved nations to impose their policy preferences on American allies (such as Israel) under the cover of protecting “oppressed civilians” (such as the Palestinians)?

The road to jihadist terror is paved from here to Afghanistan, Gaza, and Kosovo with good intentions toward besieged Muslim “rebels” who invariably turn out to be virulently anti-Western and allied with Islamic militants.

How do we know Libya is not a rerun of that costly error?

With a few honorable exceptions, Congress is sitting on its hands rather than pressing for answers. Meanwhile, President Obama takes the imperial presidency to warmaking heights George W. Bush would have been flayed for even contemplating, much less trying.

The antiwar Left has gone mute — proving yet again that its main objection is not to war but to commanders-in-chief whose names are followed by the designation “R.” The Republican leadership is feckless — making very little noise, and doing even less.

As we learned in the Bush years, lawmakers love to yap about Congress’s constitutional war power. That power, however, is a duty not a debating point. It’s a duty on which the current Congress is derelict.

President Obama recently called the U.S. military operations in Libya, which began 71 days ago, a “slow, steady process” where the U.S. and its allies attempt to “wear down the regime forces and change the political calculations of the Gadhafi regime to the point where they finally realize that they’re not going to control this country.”

“LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Two Iraqi men living as refugees in Kentucky tried to send sniper rifles, Stinger missiles and money to al-Qaida operatives in their home country, and both boasted of using improvised explosives against American troops there before moving to the U.S., according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

Thirty-year-old Waad Ramadan Alwan and 23-year-old Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, both of Bowling Green, were arrested last week after an investigation that began months after they arrived in the U.S. in 2009. Neither is charged with plotting attacks within the United States, and authorities said their weapons and money didn’t make it to Iraq because of a tightly controlled undercover investigation.

Alwan is charged with conspiracy to kill a United States national, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. Hammadi is charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists and knowingly transferring, possession or exporting a device designed or intended to launch or guide a rocket or missile.

The FBI said in an affidavit that Alwan told an informant that he took part in insurgent attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq using both improvised explosive devices and a sniper rifle, saying “lunch and dinner would be an American.” Court documents say Hammadi also told an informant he planted improvised explosives in Iraq.

The men pleaded not guilty to the charges during a preliminary hearing Tuesday, and they’re in federal custody pending a detention hearing.

The criminal complaints against the two men say they entered the United States legally in April 2009 and had refugee status. By late 2010, Alwan had told the informant he wanted to help terrorists in Iraq, and he recruited Hammadi early this year, authorities said. They are accused of trying to send the rifles, missiles and C4 plastic explosives to Iraq.

Federal prosecutors and the FBI declined to say how the two men were able to enter the country as refugees, or what they were doing in Bowling Green, a city of 60,000. State officials said at least 253 Iraqi refugees have moved to the city since 2008 but wouldn‘t comment on whether the state’s refugee office dealt with the suspects.

“Perhaps they just thought it was a lovely community,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Elizabeth Fries, who declined to say what the men did for a living.

A Department of Homeland Security official, who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said Alwan and Hammadi slipped through gaps in the immigration vetting system that have since been filled. The official said the agency now checks people repeatedly as new information becomes available.

Their arrests come after FBI Director Robert Mueller said in February that his agency was taking a fresh look at Iraqi nationals in the U.S. who had ties to al-Qaida’s offshoot in Iraq. The group had not previously been considered a threat in the U.S.

Hammadi’s court-appointed attorney, James Earhart of Louisville, said he doesn‘t know much about the case beyond what’s in the criminal complaint.

“I haven’t had a chance to sit down and talk with him yet,” he said.

Federal Public Defender Scott Wendelsdorf, who represents Alwan, declined comment.

No one answered the door Tuesday afternoon when a reporter went to Alwan‘s and Hammadi’s listed addresses in Bowling Green.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the government is trying to find out more about Alwan and Hammadi but currently has no information.

Court documents say the probe of Alwan began in September 2009, five months after he’d come to the U.S. Late the next year, authorities started using an informant to record conversations with him.

According to the criminal complaints, Alwan told the informant he was involved in insurgent attacks in Iraq from 2003 until 2006. The FBI said Alwan drew diagrams of four types of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, for the informant.

In January, investigators identified fingerprints belonging to Alwan on a component of an unexploded IED that was recovered by U.S. forces in Iraq in 2005, the FBI said.

The informant told Alwan that he worked for groups that received money from Osama bin Laden and was planning to send money and weapons to Iraq in secret compartments on cars.

The criminal complaints say that in January, Alwan recruited Hammadi to assist him, describing the younger Iraqi to the informant as a relative whose work as an insurgent was well known. Later that month, Alwan and Hammadi allegedly delivered money to a tractor-trailer, believing the money would ultimately be shipped to al-Qaida in Iraq. They later helped delivered weapons that included two Stinger missiles, authorities say.

“In reality, these weapons and money never made it outside of Kentucky,” Fries said.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear said state officials have known about the investigation for several weeks, but declined further comment.”

“Martin Bashir, it seems, is not a fan of Sarah Palin. And during his MSNBC show and “Clear the Air” segment, he went looking for a way to roast the possible 2012 candidate who is now on a national bus tour. So what tool did he use to blast the woman even many of her detractors see as patriotic? The American flag.

According to Bashir, Palin could be breaking the law by displaying the American flag on her tour bus:

Yet that’s precisely what Sarah Palin is doing. She’s using the flag of the United States for her own financial purposes. She drapes herself in the stars and stripes and makes millions of dollars in the process. This has got nothing to do with the presidency and everything to do with filling her pockets. NewsBusters quickly takes Bashir to task, especially reminding him that the U.S. Flag Code is not federal law:

“The only problem: the Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that flag burning is protected by the First Amendment. If flag burning is protected speech, certainly displaying the flag on a tour bus is legal. Or do the rules not apply to Sarah Palin? In Bashir’s warped sense of reality, conservatives like Palin would be arrested for flying the American flag at rallies in which they promote causes that Bashir does not support.

The Congressional Research Service, a non-partisan organization that provides legal analysis to members of Congress, clarified that observance of the Flag Code is “purely voluntary” in a 2008 congressional report: “While wearing the colors may be in poor taste and offensive to many, it is important to remember that the Flag Code is intended as a guide to be followed on a purely voluntary basis to insure proper respect for the flag.”

Considering Palin’s profile has been raised so much in the last week, she can expect attacks like this from the left. But attacks like this are a weak attempt at a nuanced smear campaign.”

The left-leaning blog ThinkProgress isn’t happy with Sen. Chuck Schumer’s statement that Palestinians and Arabs“don’t believe there should be an Israel.” Here’s the text of the statement Schumer made at a Jewish function this past Sunday:

“The reason there is no peace in the Middle East is very simple. It’s because the majority of Palestinians and the majority of Arabs don’t believe there should be an Israel. It’s that simple. Anyone who tries to figure out a way to solve this conflict without realizing that truth will never get anywhere.”

ThinkProgress cites various polls that seem to contradict Schumer’s statements:

“Polling conducted in 2009 indicated that 74 percent of Palestinians support a two-state solution based around the contours of the international consensus. Polling conducted in 2010 found that 71 percent support peace negotiations with Israel and that a majority of Palestinians oppose rocket attacks on the country.”

“RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Egypt lifted a 4-year-old blockade of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, greatly easing travel restrictions on the 1.5 million residents of the Palestinian territory in a move that bolstered the Hamas government while dealing a setback to Israel’s attempts to isolate the militant group.

The sense of relief was palpable as buses piled high with luggage crossed the Rafah border terminal and hundreds of people traveled abroad for overdue medical appointments, business dealings and family affairs. In Israel, fears were heightened that militants and weapons will soon pour into the territory.

“I was so happy to hear that the Egyptian border is opening so I can finally travel for treatment,” said Mohammad Zoarob, a 66-year-old suffering from chronic kidney disease.

He said he had been waiting for a medical permit from the Palestinian health ministry for five years so he could go to Egypt for treatment. When Palestinian officials coincidentally approved the permit on Saturday, he kissed his family goodbye, rushed to the border and was quickly whisked across.

“They put me in an ambulance and in five minutes I reached the Egyptian side of the crossing,” he said.

Saturday’s expansion of the Rafah crossing was a tangible benefit of the popular unrest sweeping through the Arab world. The blockade, which has fueled an economic crisis in Gaza, is deeply unpopular among Arabs, and Egypt’s caretaker leaders had promised to end it since the ouster of longtime President Hosni Mubarak in February.

Israel and Egypt imposed the blockade after the Islamic militant Hamas seized control of Gaza in June 2007. The closure aimed to weaken Hamas. But the Iranian-backed group remains firmly in power, operating the border crossing even at a time when it is supposed to be reconciling with the rival Fatah movement.

Until Saturday, the Rafah border terminal had functioned at a limited capacity. Only certain classes of people, such as students, businessmen or medical patients, were eligible to travel and the crossing was often subject to closures, leading to huge backlogs that forced people to wait for months.

Under the new system, virtually anyone can travel, and a much larger number of Palestinians are expected to be able to cross each day.

Hundreds of Gazans gathered early Saturday as the first bus load of passengers crossed the border at 9 a.m. Two Egyptian officers stood guard next to a large Egyptian flag atop the border gate as the vehicle rumbled through. One after another buses crossed Rafah, pulling blue carts behind them with luggage piled high.

“All we need is to travel like humans, be treated with dignity and feel like any other citizens of the world who can travel in and out freely,” said Rami Arafat, 52, who hoped to catch a flight out of Cairo on Sunday to attend his daughter’s wedding in Algeria.

Nearby, 28-year-old Khaled Halaweh said he was headed to Egypt to study for a master’s degree in engineering at Alexandria University.

“The closure did not affect only the travel of passengers or the flowing of goods. Our brains and our thoughts were under blockade,” said Halaweh, who said he hadn’t been out of Gaza for seven years.

Inside the border terminal Saturday, the atmosphere was orderly, as Hamas police called passengers one by one to register their travel documents.

By the close of operation at 5 p.m., 410 people had crossed into Egypt, said Salama Baraka, head of police at the Rafah terminal, well above the daily average of about 300 in recent months.

Thirty-nine were turned back because they did not have the proper visas or travel documents, Baraka said. Israeli media quoted Egyptian officials as saying some were also on Egyptian “terror lists.” In the past, Egypt had rejected passengers found to be on “blacklists.” An additional 150 people crossed from Egypt into Gaza.

With the crossing now operating six days a week, officials hope to raise the daily number of travelers to 1,000. Baraka said ten thousand people are registered to travel between June and August 25.

“Today is a cornerstone for a new era that we hope will pave the road to ending the siege and blockade on Gaza,” said Hatem Awideh, director general of the Hamas border authority in Gaza. “We hope this facilitation by our Egyptian brothers will improve travel and will allow everyone to leave Gaza.”

About 100 Hamas supporters marched with Palestinian and Egyptian flags outside the border terminal in a gesture of gratitude to Egypt.

“This courageous step by Egypt reflects the deep historic relations between the Palestinian and Egyptian nations,” said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zahri.

The new system will not resolve Gazans’ travel woes completely, though.

Men between the ages of 18 and 40 still will have to obtain Egyptian visas, a process that can take months. Women, children and older men must get travel permits, which can be obtained in several days.

Israel, which controls Gaza’s cargo crossings, allows most consumer goods into Gaza, but still restricts exports as well as the entry of much-needed construction materials, saying they could be used by militants. Israel also enforces a naval blockade aimed at weapons smuggling.

Israeli and American officials have expressed concerns that Hamas will exploit the opening to bring weapons and fighters into Gaza. In January 2008, masked militants blew open the Rafah border wall, allowing thousands of people to pour in and out of Egypt.

Egyptian officials say they have security measures in place to keep weapons from crossing through Rafah.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said the Rafah opening puts “additional responsibility on the Egyptians about what happens in Gaza.”

“Both Israel and Egypt have mutual interests against global Jihad terror and against Hamas terror and I expect that cooperation will continue for the benefit of both sides,” Ayalon said on Channel 10 TV.

Opposition lawmaker Nachman Shai blamed the Israeli government for failing to prevent the opening of Rafah. Israeli officials had lobbied Egypt to leave the restrictions in place.

“Mubarak is gone, there is a new government and we already see how Israel-Egypt relations are substantially deteriorating,” he said. “A significant security breach was created today under our noses.

Hamas has long used tunnels to get arms into Gaza. Gaza militants now have military-grade rockets that have hit cities in southern Israel. Israeli military officials believe that Iranian experts are already in Gaza training Hamas. The fear is that it will now become even easier for them to get into the territory.

“One trainer who tells them how to set up the rockets and how to use them is equal to a large quantity of weapons,” Amos Gilad, a senior Israeli Defense Ministry official who works closely with Egypt, told Channel 2 TV.

The border opening comes on the heels of an Egyptian-mediated unity deal between the rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah.

Hamas has governed Gaza since routing Fatah forces in 2007, leaving the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority in control only of the West Bank.

Earlier this month, the sides signed a reconciliation deal in Cairo. But details are still being worked out, and Hamas will be in charge of the Palestinian side of Rafah.

Both Egypt and Fatah officials played down any significance, describing the expanded operations of Rafah a victory for all Palestinians. Nabil Shaath, a senior Fatah official, said he considered the border opening a fruit of the unity deal.”

Sara Palin, speaking of her current bus tour to historical places, said it is so important for Americans to learn about our past that we might clearly see our way to our future. Sara is visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, which is now a national museum. It was where nine million European immigrants entered the United States, long before government entitlements.  Well Sara, since you brought it up, I’ll talk about our past, something I have not been hearing.

The game Congress is playing, called the shell game, is to make you think the pea is under a shell other than the one it is under.  In the end, there is not a dime’s worth of difference in Republicans and Democrats. They are all after the same goal.  

A vote was taken yesterday in the House of Representatives, part of Congress’ shell game, rejecting the Presidents spending plans.  As much as the President, Congress wants to keep government redistribution of the nation’s wealth in place.  Spending taxpayer money to help people out is what allows Members of Congress to keep permanent career jobs.  Imagine how many votes a politician would get who advocated the elimination of government entitlement. 

Politicians put government entitlement in place and now we can’t survive without them.  The President has now given us a $14.7 trillion debt, and wants to give us trillions of more debt. Half of the voters approve of him while few approve of Congress. There is little doubt of who is going to win.

I’m privileged to have lived before government redistribution of the nation’s wealth, when hard work and doing the job well was what counted; when the American people depended on the family; when we saved for a rainy day.  In so doing, we left the nation a better place for future generations. 

By turning what used to be a personal responsibility over to career politicians, we leave future generations with an astronomical debt, for the first time in the history of America, a worse place to live. 

Congress has us over a barrel and knows it. Our so-called representatives are trying now to convince the public that they are taking the needed steps to balance the budget—in the future, nothing specific.  

We elect representatives to public office for the purpose of doing something constructive. What we’ve gotten from our elected representatives, made out by construction, is the greatest fraud of all times.

Going to Congress for the cure is like going to the fox to watch over the henhouse.

It isn’t a pretty picture.  How do you think we got in this mess? Congress is making  you think it is doing something for you when it is not. As always, Congress is doing for itself. The future of the American people is grim.  Best that you be prepared.

“On October 28, 1980, President Ronald Reagan looked into the camera for closing remarks during his last debate with Jimmy Carter and said:

“Next Tuesday is election day. Next Tuesday all of you will go to the polls. You will stand there in the polling place and make a decision. I think when you make that decision it might be well if you ask yourself, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

While I don’t know what went through the minds of the millions of television viewers who heard Reagan ask that question that night, by the time they entered the voting booth a week later a clear majority of them had decided the answer to Reagan’s question was: “No, we are not better off.”

The results of the presidential election of 1980 proved that Reagan had done a masterful job of drawing attention to the disaster Carter wrought upon our economy, our military, our energy supplies, our national morale, and on and on.

And though we’re just over halfway through President Obama’s first term in office, it seems all Americans should ask themselves if we’re better off now than we were two years ago.

The answer is just as straightforward: No, we’re not.

Unemployment is at 9% and our national debt is over $14,000,000,000,000. According to Reuters, our floundering economy is only poised to get worse. Obama’s answer to the unemployment and incomprehensible debt is to raise taxes to the tune of $2 trillion: that’s “$1 trillion in new taxes on wealthier Americans (and small businesses)” and another trillion sought “in higher tax revenues by reducing tax breaks and subsidies.”

Gasoline, which was $1.81 a gallon when Obama took office, has jumped to over $4 more than once. (It’s now hovering around $3.70.) Throughout this more than 100% jump in gasoline prices, Obama maintained his offshore drilling moratorium and prevented us from drilling for more oil in the western states and Alaska.

Obama’s arrogance is so great that when a citizen asked him how average Americans were supposed to make ends meet with gas prices so high, Obama simply “suggested that the gentleman consider getting rid of his gas-guzzling vehicle.”

We don’t even have to revisit Obama’s quasi-government takeovers of GM, Chrysler, and a myriad of banking institutions to understand why our national morale is low. It’s so low, in fact, that columnists and bloggers grasping for a suitable analogy now compare today’s political and social climate to the malaise we endured under Carter.

And if you think the comparison to the Carter years is a stretch, just consider the irony of one of the other questions Reagan asked as he looked into that camera in 1980:

Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the store than it was four years ago?

Well? Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the store than it was two years ago?

Reagan wanted the people listening to him to know that it was time to make a choice: that America faced a perilous future unless we changed course at that moment in time.

And I dare say we will face an even more dire future now than we would have then, if we don’t determine to change our course in 2012.
