BRACKETTVILLE, Texas—The chaos caused by millions of illegal immigrants flooding across the southwest border under the Biden administration left scars on this border town.
The constant high-speed chases, buzzing helicopters, screaming emergency sirens, hurried school lockdowns, torn barbed-wire fences, and decomposing bodies on ranches and along the Rio Grande all took their toll on Texas towns near the Mexican border.
The border crisis drained resources and changed the lifestyle of Brackettville, a little town with two traffic light intersections in Kinney County. Residents of the county and beyond said the madness stopped almost overnight after President Donald Trump took office.
Now they say the chaos of illegal immigration has just moved into the country’s interior to places that include Minnesota.
Illegal border crossings plummeted to record lows after Trump took office. In fiscal year 2025, Customs and Border Protection reported 443,000 encounters at the southwest border with Mexico.
In 2024, that number stood at a little less than 2.5 million.
‘Back to Mayberry’
Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe estimated that 30,000 to 40,000 people per year moved through the county in 2022 and 2023.
Images of illegal immigrants were caught on game cameras meant to give ranchers photos of deer and wildlife on their property, which allowed Coe to estimate the traffic.
“If we hadn’t stepped up when we did in the way we did—I think it would totally destroy the county, had the wave of illegal immigrants continued,” he told The Epoch Times.
Brackettville sits north of the Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Route 57 past Eagle Pass and west of the Uvalde checkpoint, making it an ideal location for gotaways, or illegal immigrants who evade capture.
“It’s really a geographical thing with the checkpoint locations to some degree,” Brent Smith, Kinney County attorney, told The Epoch Times.
The area attracted state and national attention as a hot spot for high-speed chases involving smugglers during the border crisis.
The depth of the problem along the smuggling corridor was the subject of an Epoch Times documentary: “Gotaways: The Hidden Border Crisis.”
But now, ranchers are not spending all their time repairing fences, picking up dumpsters full of discarded water bottles and clothing, or worrying about who might walk out of the brush.
They no longer have to black out their windows in fear that the light will attract unwanted nighttime visitors. Families are once again accompanying hunters to their deer leases, Smith said.
“So, it’s kind of back to Mayberry,” Coe told The Epoch Times, referring to the idyllic small town featured in the 1960s TV series “The Andy Griffith Show.”
Matt Benacci, a school board member for Brackett Independent School District, said life has returned to normal at the district’s K–12 campuses as well.
School lockdowns have all but stopped, he told The Epoch Times.
During the border crisis, schools would sometimes have to lock down two times per day because of smugglers bailing out of vehicles and running on foot through the town, he said.
A car of gotaways once jumped the curb onto school grounds and the occupants fled, and one illegal immigrant tried the gym doors to get inside the school, he said.
Brackett Independent School District placed giant stones along the perimeter of its schools to serve as barricades to protect against future incidents.
Death in a Small Town
Those kinds of chases turned deadly for residents because it sapped their town’s resources.
Smith recalls two instances during the mass migration in which Kinney County residents suffered life-threatening medical emergencies when their resources were dispatched to crashes involving smugglers.
“If we have, like, a huge crash or pursuit, 20 miles, 25 miles north of town, all of our resources are out there,” he said.
If an ambulance had been available on a fateful day in 2024, perhaps Benacci’s mother might still be alive.
“I try not to dwell on it because the only thing you can do is get really angry,” Benacci said, his voice breaking, eyes pricking with tears.
Gloria Benacci, who was in her 70s, died two years ago after suffering a stroke, he said.
The local ambulance crew was not available because it was responding to a deadly crash involving illegal immigrants. Likewise, rescue helicopters were tied up, he recalled.
State troopers chased a vehicle containing a U.S. citizen and several illegal immigrants in early March 2024. The vehicle rolled over, throwing people from the truck. Four died.
With local emergency services tied up, an ambulance from Uvalde, about 40 miles away, was dispatched for Benacci’s mother and arrived in about an hour.
It took another couple of hours to get her to a hospital in San Antonio. She never recovered the ability to breathe on her own, he said, and she passed away on March 13, 2024.
“Once an ambulance is dispatched out there to something like that, you can’t divert them to something else,” he said, referring to the illegal immigrant crash.
Larger border cities were not spared, either.
In Eagle Pass, Fire Chief Manuel Mello said his department received as many as six calls per day for drownings along the Rio Grande in 2022. In 2025, the number dropped to about six for the entire year, he said.
Now, emergency calls to the Rio Grande and those involving foreign nationals have dropped by 95 percent, he said.
“Once the new administration came in, things started to slow down significantly,” he said. “We were getting calls almost every day to the river’s edge, and right now, I don’t think we’ve had one call in the last two, three months.”
Things were so bad for a while that he had a designated crew just for responding to calls to the river’s edge. It would get multiple calls and, at times, get overwhelmed, he said.
People trying to ride the trains into the United States often incurred horrific injuries or death, he said. Many had their limbs crushed or amputated in the doors that would slide shut as the train moved.
“We were seeing a lot of amputations, a lot of decapitations, a lot of injuries,” he said.
Mass migration strained the entire medical system, he said. Emergency medical services and the hospital system were overwhelmed, according to him.
“There was a point where we were waiting 45 minutes to an hour outside, waiting for a bed,” he said. “So right now, I guess my guys are breathing a little easier.”
Border Scars
Wanda Selby, 88, said she no longer feels the need to carry her Smith and Wesson .38 revolver when she goes on walks with her dog, Lady.
“They’re just not coming through like they were,” she told The Epoch Times as she ambled among the towering live oaks in Red Bridge Park.
Selby told The Epoch Times that in 2022, she decided to forgo her frequent walks alone after striking up a conversation with a young Texas highway patrolman.
He was parked along a rural road near a friend’s ranch where she liked to walk. The lawman told her that a .38 would not help her because human smugglers, or coyotes, working for the Mexican cartels carried AK-47s.
“‘You don’t want to let anybody know you have a gun, because they have a bigger gun,’” she recalled him saying.
She opted to walk in her neighborhood afterward.
In 2022 and 2023, it was common to hear helicopters buzzing overhead in her neighborhood. Sometimes illegal immigrants on the run would come onto people’s porches, she recalled.
Border Patrol agents and state troopers frequently combed her neighborhood.
“It was a nightmare down here,” she said. “[Former President Joe] Biden, he didn’t just let them in—he welcomed murderers, drug dealers, anybody that wanted to come in. They were not vetted at the border.”
Damage to Ranches
Ben Binnion, 39, is a wildlife biologist who manages thousands of acres of ranchland outside of Eagle Pass across from the Mexican border.
Beginning in 2021, the ranch became a superhighway for human traffickers, suffering at least $350,000 in damages, he said.
Many illegal immigrants would walk around the checkpoint east of Eagle Pass, with some using Farm Road 481, which is near the ranch, to head north.
“It was like a perfect storm,“ he told The Epoch Times. ”You have a two-hour ride to San Antonio, and then you’re free.”
People have no idea just how bad things were, according to him.
He witnessed daily high-speed chases. Sometimes, coyotes would drive their vehicles straight through the fence, he said.
He moved his wife and infant son off the ranch for their safety, knowing that his wife would defend their baby if needed.
“My wife would have killed somebody,” he said. “I mean, they were coming up to our house probably twice a week.”
In an 18-month period between 2021 and 2022, at least 200 people per night came through the ranch, he said. Once a week, they broke into houses, barns, and structures on the ranch.
“That’s a city, a big city, coming through ... right here,” he said, gesturing to the miles of scrub brush and mesquite. “It was insane there for a while.”
Binnion held up his cellphone, rattling off a list of 21 nationalities of people who had discarded their identification on the ranch. The list included people from Afghanistan, China, Congo, Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan, and Nigeria.
Groups of eight or 10 young men would show up, demanding food and a way to charge their phones, he said.
The constant traffic made hunting on the ranch dangerous, he said. There was always the chance that an illegal immigrant might walk into the line of sight when someone pulled the trigger to take down game.
It is rare for an illegal immigrant to cross onto the ranch nowadays.
When Trump won the election, it was like someone flipped a light switch and the madness stopped, he said.
The last incident he remembers was in December 2025. Border Patrol caught a Honduran with cartel ties who broke into a hunting lodge and stole a pistol on a nearby ranch, he said.
Fear and Broken Fences
Quail scatter along the single-lane blacktop roads leading to the Tequesquite Ranch, an 8,200-acre exotic game ranch spanning Kinney and Maverick counties.
Wayne King, 74, who has managed the ranch for eight years, said the border crisis cost the ranch $300,000 in lost exotic game animals that escaped through holes in the fencing cut by smugglers and illegal immigrants.
King scanned the rugged land, turned silvery by the dusty purple sage, and nodded at a ladder leaning against the fence.
He put it there to no avail, hoping that illegal immigrants would use it rather than cut holes in the fences.
During the Biden administration, he fixed 450 holes along the ranch’s 22-mile fence line.
The illegal immigrants would gather in the city of Jiménez, Mexico, before heading across the border and through the ranch.
One Border Patrol agent told him that entrepreneurs running a taco stand on the Mexican side were giving away free wire cutters with a food purchase.
“Without a doubt, so much crime went through here,” he told The Epoch Times.
King testified before the Texas Senate about a 2021 encounter with a band of illegal immigrants.
One night at about 1:30 a.m., he heard knocking on his door. He looked out the window to see 12 men in black camouflage sitting in his driveway.
“I sat there and grabbed the AR,” he said. “They’re not good people.”
King said he installed motion-censored lights around his ranch house, which seemed to deter nighttime encounters.
Then there was the time a smuggler drove a truck through the ranch fence trying to escape Border Patrol. It made it about a mile into the ranch and hit a ditch. The tires caught fire, and the entire pickup went up in flames.
The driver and three occupants got away but were later caught in another stolen truck, he said.
Same Problem, Different Cities
The drain on resources and the effort to stop it has not really let up. It has just moved on to other cities such as Minneapolis, according to Smith.
Smith said he is all for deporting everyone who is in the country illegally, not just those with criminal records, as a deterrent.
“All this ties back to us here in Kinney County, because if they don’t enforce the removals of mass deportations, it incentivizes more people to come in,” Smith said. “I mean, that’s just how it works.”
The problems Minneapolis is experiencing due to illegal immigration are just the natural outcome of what King considers an invasion at the border.
He approves of Trump deporting the millions of people who came in illegally under Biden.
“We’re just now getting over the invasion,” he said. “After you live through it down here, yes, we want every one of them to be gone.”
Selby said she does not understand the attacks against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers she is seeing in Minneapolis.
“I’m a patriot, and I believe that [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] is just trying to enforce the law,” Selby said.
She wondered aloud why there were no protests or riots when Americans were raped or killed by illegal immigrants.
What scares Binnion is the thought that the onslaught could return in 2028, depending on who is elected.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Lawmakers and the White House offered no signs of compromise Sunday in their battle over oversight of federal immigration officers that has led to a pause in funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
A partial government shutdown began Saturday after congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump’s team failed to reach a deal on legislation to fund the department through September. Democrats are demanding changes to how immigration operations are conducted after the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal officers in Minneapolis last month.
Congress is on recess until Feb. 23, and both sides appear dug into their positions. The impasse affects agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Coast Guard, the Secret Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The work at ICE and CBP goes on unabated because Trump’s tax and spending cut law from 2025 provided billions more to those agencies that can be tapped for deportation operations. About 90% of DHS employees were to continue working during the shutdown, but do so without pay - and missed paychecks could mean financial hardships. Last year there was a record 43-day government shutdown.
White House border czar Tom Homan said the administration was unwilling to agree to Democrats’ demands that federal officers clearly identify themselves, remove masks during operations and display unique ID numbers.
“I don’t like the masks, either,” Homan said, But, he said, “These men and women have to protect themselves.”
Democrats also want to require immigration agents to wear body cameras and mandate judicial warrants for arrests on private property.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Democrats are only asking for federal agents to abide by rules followed by law enforcement agencies around the country.
“And the question that Americans are asking is, ‘Why aren’t Republicans going along with these commonsense proposals?’” Schumer said. “They’re not crazy. They’re not way out. They’re what every police department in America does.”
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., said he could back Democrats calls to equip immigration officers with body cameras and would support efforts to bolster training. But he balked at their demands that federal officer remove masks and clearly identify themselves, noting some officers taking part in immigration enforcement operations have faced doxing and other harassment.
“What are you going to do, expose their faces so you can intimidate their families?” Mullins said. “What we want is ICE to be able to do their job. And we would love for local law enforcement and for states to cooperate with us.”
Republican Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, a Trump ally who had pushed for a two-week extension of DHS funding while negotiations continued, said it was “shortsighted of Democrats to walk away” from talks.
Trump made enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws a centerpiece of his 2024 campaign for the White House and he promised to be aggressive in detaining and deporting people living in the United States without legal permission.
DHS reports it has deported more than 675,000 migrants since Trump’s return to office last year and claims some 2.2 million others have “self-deported” as the Republican president has made his immigration crackdown a priority.
“President Trump is not going to back away from the mission, the mission that American people said they wanted him to complete, and that is securing our border and making sure that we actually do interior enforcement,” Britt said.
Homan was on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Schumer and Mullin appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” and Britt was interviewed on “Fox News Sunday.”

In an explosive interview with Benny Johnson, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) didn’t hold back, tearing into Barack Obama’s sudden political rise and his administration’s alarming proximity to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
While the mainstream media continues to run cover for the Democrat elite, Burchett is asking the questions they refuse to touch: How did Jeffrey Epstein operate so freely while Obama was in the White House?
The conversation kicked off with breaking news regarding Kathryn Ruemmler, Obama’s former White House Counsel, who recently resigned from Goldman Sachs.
Ruemmler’s name has surfaced repeatedly in connection to Epstein, raising serious questions about the access the disgraced financier had to the highest levels of the Obama administration.

“The vast majority of Epstein's most heinous crimes took place while Barack Obama was President,” Johnson noted. “Jeffrey Epstein got out of jail right as Barack Obama was being put into office... And it's his lawyer, the White House Counsel, who's communicating with this pedophile.”
Johnson pointed out the glaring double standard in how the media treats Obama compared to anyone else. “Obama is the one who's skated on this, and nobody's really brought up his name,” Johnson said. “Why is nobody asking Obama, ‘Why didn't you do something about Jeffrey Epstein?’”
Burchett’s response was nothing short of a MOAB.
According to the Tennessee Republican, Obama’s presidency wasn't a natural political phenomenon—it was a calculated move by powerful shadow figures.
“Because President Obama was created. He's not organic,” Burchett said. “I mean, you pick this obscure guy from college who has zero records. You have college professors that don't remember him ever being there.”
Burchett described a pattern of mysterious dropouts and unopposed races that paved the way for Obama’s meteoric rise from a state senator to the Presidency.
“He goes from a state senator to a US senator to an unknown to being President of the United States because he was created,” Burchett explained. “They found somebody that fit their mold.”
Burchett compared Obama to “Johnny Bravo” from the Brady Bunch—a character chosen solely because he “fit the suit.”
“That's the way Obama was. He fit the suit,” Burchett said. “He was a good-looking, articulate guy... and came up through the corrupt Chicago machine.”
The Congressman warned that this wasn't a one-time event, pointing to members of “The Squad” like AOC as other examples of candidates manufactured by billionaire donors to push a radical agenda.
“You had billionaires putting money behind probably 30 or 40 different candidates across the country, and they hit on a half dozen... that's how they got there.”
Burchett also expressed frustration with the media's refusal to cover the Oversight Committee's work on the Epstein files and other corruption investigations, noting that despite having “20 or 30,000 pages” of evidence, the legacy press ignores it to protect their own.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has officially transmitted to Congress the Department of Justice’s Section 3 report under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, confirming that the DOJ has now released ALL Epstein-related materials in its possession.
The February 14, 2026, report — addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, Ranking Member Dick Durbin, House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin — confirms that the Department has released all the files.
“In accordance with the requirements of the Act, and as described in various Department submissions to the courts of the Southern District of New York assigned to the Epstein and Maxwell prosecutions and related orders, the Department released all ‘records, documents, communications and investigative materials in the possession of the Department’ that ‘relate to’ any of nine different categories,” the letter read.
The Department released materials tied to the following nine categories:
- Jeffrey Epstein — all investigations, prosecutions, and custodial matters
- Ghislaine Maxwell
- Flight logs and travel records — aircraft manifests, itineraries, customs records, vessels, vehicles used by Epstein or related entities
- Individuals named in connection with Epstein’s criminal activity, civil settlements, immunity deals, plea agreements, or investigations
- Entities (corporate, nonprofit, academic, governmental) tied to Epstein’s trafficking or financial networks
- Immunity deals, non-prosecution agreements, plea bargains, sealed agreements involving Epstein or associates
- Internal DOJ communications regarding decisions to charge or decline prosecution
- Communications regarding destruction, deletion, or concealment of evidence
- Documentation of Epstein’s detention and death, including incident reports, witness interviews, autopsy files
The DOJ stated:
“No records were withheld or redacted on the basis of embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity, including to any government official, public figure, or foreign dignitary.”
The only materials withheld were those protected by traditional legal privileges such as attorney-client or deliberative-process privilege.
Bondi’s letter also details the redaction process. According to the report, redactions were limited to:
- Victim personal and medical information
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
- Information that could jeopardize active investigations
- Graphic images of death or abuse
No classification-based redactions were used.
Unredacted versions are available for congressional inspection at the DOJ.
The letter includes a list of more than 300 high-profile names. The list is a “Who’s Who” of the liberal elite and establishment figures, including Barack and Michelle Obama, Joe and Hunter Biden, Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Gates.
