Iran’s strategy in this war was never complicated. The mullahs believed that if they choked the Strait of Hormuz long enough, Americans would feel it at the gas pump and Washington would lose its nerve before the midterms. Brent crude spiked past $107 a barrel this month, and Iranian-aligned militias sent drones into Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and shut it down for more than a week. Tehran was betting that pain at the pump would break us before its own economy broke.
That bet has failed, and President Donald Trump deserves immense credit for it.
Crude exports from the Persian Gulf are back at pre-war levels. JPMorgan puts the 10-day average at 17.5 million barrels a day, which is 98% of where it stood before the war. Goldman Sachs estimates the region exported 19 million barrels a day over the past week. Brent has come off its highs to about $103, and West Texas crude is trading around $90.
Before the war, 83% of Gulf crude had to cross the Strait of Hormuz. In September, about 60% crossed the strait, and 23% went through a UAE pipeline to the Gulf of Oman. 17% flowed through a Saudi pipeline to the Red Sea. Iran thought it held a chokehold on the world economy, and the Gulf simply routed around it.
Iran is now the one country in the region whose oil is not moving. Before the war, it exported roughly 1.7 million barrels a day. In September, satellite data showed no Iranian crude leaving by sea at all. That is the work of the American naval blockade reimposed in July.
Last week, Iran offered to reopen the strait within seven days. Its price was the release of frozen funds, an end to sanctions, and an end to the blockade. The president said no. A regime that was winning would not be begging for its money back. The mullahs cannot pay it; armed thugs protect them.
The Obama administration sent pallets of cash to Tehran. The Biden administration looked the other way while Iranian oil flowed to China. This administration has paired American naval power with the reach of the American banking system. It has blockaded Iranian ports while making it dangerous for any bank anywhere to move money for the Revolutionary Guard.
Something more remarkable is happening alongside the oil. Our Arab allies are cooperating with Israel in ways they never have before. The Abraham Accords proved in President Trump’s first term that Arab governments could work openly with the Jewish state, and this war has turned that diplomatic normalization into practical cooperation. Iran has fired on Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain. Those governments now understand that the threat to their people comes from Tehran, not Jerusalem.
Inside Iran, the regime is losing its grip. Outbreaks of violence suggest a destabilization campaign that the security services cannot contain. This regime has waged a 47-year war on Americans, plotted to shoot down Air Force One, and gunned down its own people in the streets in January. Its enforcers are now the ones who are afraid.
None of this means the war is won. I was hard on the administration this summer when it called off strikes on the promise that Iran wanted peace. Iran did not want peace then, and it does not want peace now. It wants a bomb. The Houthis are stepping up attacks in the Red Sea, and exports of diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel from the region are still running below last year’s pace. The pressure has to continue, and this White House should resist the voices internally who think a regime that chants “Death to America” can be bargained with.
But the situation has changed. Our allies are working together, oil is flowing at pre-war levels, and Iran is broke, isolated, and begging for relief. That happened because the President was willing to use every tool of American power at once and refused to accept that the Strait of Hormuz belonged to Tehran.
A month ago, Iran thought it could hold the world hostage at the gas pump. Today the Gulf’s oil is moving and Iran’s is not. President Trump deserves the credit for that.

Iranian officials signaled on Sunday that peace negotiations with the U.S. are continuing, even as Washington prepares for a potential escalation in the war later this year and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen threaten global energy markets.
The developments come as the U.S. pulled its bombers from the RAF Fairford base in Britain just a week after an alleged terror plot threatened the military base. The bombers, which were used by the U.S. during its war with Iran, have been redeployed to their home bases in the U.S., according to reports.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in a statement that Iran is reviewing the U.S. response to the seven-day peace proposal delivered to Washington via mediators late last month.
The proposal would have established a framework agreement leading to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a comprehensive ceasefire after one week.
Mr. Gharibabadi’s comments follow President Trump’s public rejection of the agreement last week. Mr. Trump argued that the deal did not go far enough and that Iran had lost significant leverage over the strait in the past month.
Separately on Sunday, several Iranian members of parliament said talks with the U.S. continue through mediators, but that Washington remains heavily focused on getting Iran to agree to denuclearization while Iran’s proposals center on the future control and security of the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr. Trump launched the war against Iran in late February with the explicit goal of removing Iran’s ability to manufacture nuclear weapons.
U.S. negotiators under Mr. Trump have attempted to elicit concessions from Iran on the nuclear issue, including a promise to halt all enrichment forever, but Iranian officials have repeatedly refused, citing national sovereignty.
Iran has long insisted that it does not seek nuclear weapons, though its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium concern analysts who say Tehran is only a few steps away from weapons-grade levels.
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, told a press conference Sunday that Tehran is considering a Russian proposal to take custody of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. He said the final decision will rest on national security interests.
It remains to be seen whether the U.S. would accept Russia taking control of the uranium stockpiles.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed that the U.S. is keeping diplomatic tracks with Iran open, though he insisted that Mr. Trump reserves the right to resume military pressure on Tehran if he sees fit.
“We’re looking at every avenue to achieve that goal economically, to be prepared for what comes militarily,” Mr. Wright said.
Asked whether he was concerned about the effect further military action against Iran would have on the flow of global energy, Mr. Wright said he was aware of the risk but pointed to Mr. Trump’s concerns that Tehran could build nuclear weapons.
The U.S. has signaled it is prepared to increase military pressure on Iran before the year ends.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group departed San Francisco for the Middle East late last month and is expected to join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington in the region by the end of November.
Additionally, vessels from the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group deployed to the region last week.
Together with the carrier strike group, the new deployments are expected to bring approximately 9,000 additional troops to the Middle East.
Iran has not missed the signaled escalation. Iranian officials have repeatedly said that Tehran is prepared to launch massive retaliatory attacks if the U.S. restarts kinetic action. They have also indicated that new targets would be hit, perhaps in reference to regional energy infrastructure.
“We hope the United States will choose the path of wisdom and reason, but if it again moves toward military solutions, we are more prepared than before and will do whatever is necessary to defend ourselves,” Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, told ambassadors at the international mission in Tehran on Saturday.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported yet another strike on a commercial tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the fourth since the start of October. All of the strikes have occurred on the Omani side of the waterway, according to UKMTO.
The attacks, which have seemingly increased in recent weeks, have reportedly slowed traffic in the strait to single-digit vessel movements.
Last month, U.S. officials insisted that the strait was open and that Iran had no control over the waterway.
Reports from late September found that traffic in the strait was approaching pre-war levels, though tallies from independent tracking firms varied and oil prices mostly remained above $100 a barrel.
Further threats to international energy came from Yemen on Sunday, as the Houthis continued to strike at oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
The Houthis said on Sunday that their forces launched several ballistic missiles and drones at oil facilities near Saudi Arabia’s capital, heightening fears that the Yemen war and its consequences could spread beyond its borders.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the strikes successfully damaged sites in Riyadh and the Khurais oil field, which sits just east of the city. Photos and video from the sites show scattered fires at the facilities and large plumes of black smoke.
The Saudi government has not issued a formal response to the allegations. Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki, the spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition forces, said in a statement to state-affiliated media that the Houthis’ account of the attack is “misleading.”
Houthi militants, supplied with weapons and equipment by Iran, have in recent weeks overtaken large swaths of territory in Yemen’s west, including strategic islands in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The territorial expansion has shocked international observers and likely given the rebels more options for launching strikes into Saudi Arabia and on ships traveling in the Red Sea.
There are also indications that Iran could use its proxies to target U.S. military infrastructure beyond the Middle East.
Last week, British counterterrorism authorites arrested five men in connection with an alleged terror plot near RAF Fairford. The men, all British nationals, were arrested with three vans after one of the suspects dialed emergency services and residents called the police.
Investigators found no explosives in the vans, and officials have released scant details on what exactly the suspects were allegedly planning to do at the base. All five men were released on bail within 24 hours, though authorities have indicated they are under surveillance.
Another 25-year-old British-Iranian national was arrested later in the week and was also released on bail the next day.
The incident sparked fears that the suspects could have been operating under orders from Iran to target the base. Iranian officials said earlier this year that the base, which was used by the U.S. to launch bombing raids against targets in Iran, was a legitimate target.
U.S. officials declined to provide specifics as to why the bombers, many of which had been stationed at RAF Fairford for months, were redeployed on Sunday.
“While operational security precluded us from confirming the movement of our assets and forces in real time, we can acknowledge now that all U.S. bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States,” a Pentagon spokesperson said in a statement.

I'm sure there will be some ignorant leftists who sign up for that offer and find out the hard way how Iran treats American hostages.
Color me skeptical, but given the chance, I'm pretty sure the Iranian regime would kill us all while happily shouting "Allahu Akbar."

The spokesperson for the Yemeni forces, Col. Majid Abdullah al-Nuzaili, said government forces had struck “vital targets” and Houthi strongholds in Sanaa and Saada.

What to know about the Iran war today:
- Senior Trump administration officials met at Camp David on Friday to discuss the war with Iran and escalating conflict between the Iran-backed Houthi militia and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government army.
- President Trump claimed at a rally Friday night that if the U.S. were to end the war immediately, it would still take Iran years to rebuild the damage to its infrastructure. Prior to traveling to Vandalia, Ohio, to host a midterm campaign rally on Saturday, President Trump referenced "a decision" he's going to make regarding Iran while speaking to reporters at the White House.
"We have a decision that I'll make about Iran," said Mr. Trump. "Iran's been decimated, so the only question is, it'll either be the easy way or the hard way, or we'll have it the easy way, or the hard way."
His comments followed reports that senior Trump administration officials met Friday at Camp David to discuss the Iran war and escalating conflict between the Houthis and Saudis. Among the officials at that meeting was Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who told reporters Saturday that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is "ironclad," but said Mr. Trump has "all the options he needs on the table" if Iran continues to "play games" with the waterway.
With midterms approaching, high gas prices prompt states to waive taxes and other regulations
As critical November midterm elections approach, state officials across the U.S. are focusing on rising gas and diesel prices tied to the Iran war, as affordability remains a leading concern for voters.
Ohio is among about one-third of states that have instituted fuel tax relief in some form or another, with its lawmakers on Wednesday passing a 90-day state gas tax holiday that earned broad bipartisan support.
A number of other states have taken action to ease fuel costs within the last week. Some have suspended their fuel taxes, while others have temporarily reduced theirs or adopted targeted relief measures for farmers, loggers and others who use a special type of diesel fuel.
Yemen announces military operation to "retake the remaining territories" from Houthis
Yemen will begin military operations to retake all territories currently held by Iran-backed Houthi fighters, the head of Yemen's presidential council, Rashad al-Alimi, announced Sunday.
"I announce today the start of military operations to retake the remaining territories of the republic and extend the authority of the state and its institutions across the entire national territory," Alimi said in a statement, marking the latest major escalation in the conflict between Yemen's internationally recognized and Saudi-backed government and the Houthis.
On Sunday, Alimi called on "the armed forces, security forces and all military formations to begin carrying out their assigned missions, in accordance with the approved plans, until the country is liberated from the grip of the Houthi terrorist militia."
The announcement followed a rapid offensive by the Houthis last month, which saw them seize large swaths of the Red Sea coastline.
Earlier Sunday, several security sources also told AFP that the group had effectively encircled Taiz after cutting the main supply route to the city, which is held by Yemen's government.
Unknown projectile strikes tanker in Strait of Hormuz, UKMTO says
An unknown projectile struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center, a British maritime security agency. The projectile damaged the tanker's engine room, but its crew was safe, the agency said Sunday. It didn't specify when or exactly where the incident occurred.
No environmental impacts were reported in connection with the strike, the agency said, adding that authorities had opened an investigation into the incident. Vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz are advised to transit with caution.
Hegseth calls U.S. blockade of Strait of Hormuz "ironclad"
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is "ironclad" and that President Trump has "all the options he needs on the table" if Iran continues to "play games" with the strait.
"Iran wants to play games with things like the Strait of Hormuz. They don't control it, we do," Hegseth told reporters. "They have literally gotten nothing through. Our blockade has been ironclad and we're running almost at prewar levels every single night through that, you see that as far as the throughput."
He added: "So we feel like we're in a very strong position. Iran ought make the right choice. If they don't, the president is going to have all the options he needs on the table. But he is not going to let these things extend unnecessarily. He understands what the mission is and we can get it done when called upon."
Hegseth also said that Mr. Trump is "hellbent" on Iran not having a nuclear weapon.
"The message is very simple: Iran will never ever ever have a nuclear weapon. President Trump is hell-bent and determined to ensure that they do not; they will not," Hegseth said.
325 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves released, IEA says
Member countries have so far released 325 million barrels of oil and oil-derivative products from strategic reserves, from 400 million barrels promised in March, the International Energy Agency said Saturday.
The update came a day after G7 countries, in coordination with the IEA, agreed to immediately release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude oil to ease global energy supply concerns caused by fallout from the U.S.-Iran war.
The G7 did not say whether the 100 million barrels included the outstanding 75 million barrels from the March IEA commitment, or came on top of that.
President Trump has been pressuring allies to release diesel reserves to ease a spike in prices for the fuel, being felt in America and elsewhere.
Restricted diesel supplies are one of the consequences of the war in the Middle East, where Iran has been throttling ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for U.S. and Israeli attacks.

DUBAI, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until seven Iranian conditions set out in a June interim agreement with the US are met, state media reported Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf as saying on Sunday.
Iran presented a proposal during the UN General Assembly under which the Strait of Hormuz waterway could be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days if the conditions were met, with the US replying to this proposal last week via Qatari intermediaries.
"The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is completely clear and firm, and the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until our seven conditions, based on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, are met," Qalibaf, who is Iran's top negotiator, was quoted as saying.
He said Washington "must understand that the period of dragging out the (diplomatic) process and dictating one-sided demands is over".
IRAN SAYS NO NUCLEAR DISCUSSIONS
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Sunday that Tehran had clarified its broad positions via mediators to the US response but that additional points remained to be communicated to Washington.
"The Americans' propositions are more or less in line with their previous positions, specifically on the nuclear issue. We told them our focus in this stage is the issue of the Strait of Hormuz and the return to security in this waterway requires clear steps from the US," spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said.
He also denied Tehran had offered UN nuclear watchdog inspections of its nuclear facilities in exchange for US sanctions relief, saying Iran had not entered into nuclear discussions with Washington.
The document being circulated outlines a seven-day period of trust-building aimed at returning the two sides to an enhanced version of the memorandum of understanding agreed in June, including concrete steps on Iran's nuclear programme, an official briefed on the talks said last week.
The disagreement centres on the sequencing of the steps rather than the components of the plan, the official added.
WARNING FROM ARAQCHI
Qatar has been shuttling messages between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas before the war that began at the end of February with US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
The June memorandum of understanding led to a brief ceasefire and included provisions on the strait and Iran's nuclear programme.
Separately, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told foreign ambassadors and diplomats in Tehran on Sunday that Tehran hoped Washington would choose diplomacy but warned that Iran was prepared to respond if the US again chose military action.
On Thursday, sources told Reuters that Iran was preparing a broader and more forceful response if Washington resumed large-scale military attacks.
“If they again move towards military solutions, we are more prepared than before and will take whatever action is necessary to defend ourselves,” Araqchi said on Sunday.
Army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia told Fars news agency on Sunday Iran would upgrade the range of its missiles.

Iran is weighing how to respond to growing US pressure as nuclear negotiations with Washington remain stalled, creating an increasingly complex regional situation, a senior Israeli defense official said on Friday.
"The Iranians are looking for tools within this campaign. They are asking themselves how they can get out of this situation. It is reasonable to assume that they are also discussing the possibility of influencing the elections in order to understand the other side," the official said.
The senior defense official said there had recently been a large number of unresolved incidents, some of which could potentially develop into attacks on the Israeli home front from a variety of directions, and not necessarily from Iran.
"There were many warnings and many nights when the system was occupied with clarifying the situation and raising and lowering the alert level. There were many nights of heightened readiness. Hezbollah? It definitely factors into Iran's calculations if Iran enters into a confrontation with Israel," the official said.
According to the defense official, the Iranians are constantly assessing the situation in the US and the extent of Washington's readiness to enter into a confrontation with them, and this affects Tehran's own assessment of the situation.

Economic pressure mounts on Iran
The official also stressed that conditions in Iran are deteriorating and that the effect of US sanctions can be clearly seen.
The number of tankers leaving the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz has been rising, and according to IDF data, an average of 30 to 40 tankers are now passing through each day. That figure reflects levels seen before the war. In other words, Iranian influence in the strait is declining.
The official also noted that the Iranian rial had reached a new low in recent days, with nearly 2.5 million rials now equivalent to one US dollar. At the same time, he clarified that Iran had not yet reached hyperinflation.
The official illustrated the economic situation by citing a critical article in an Iranian newspaper identified with the regime that compared the price of eggs in Iran with the average salary, adding that the cost of living in Iran was now "unbearable."
Compounding the economic pressure is what the official described as a US naval blockade of Iran that began this week. In addition to the sanctions, he said, the measure contains elements that are humiliating for Tehran because it prevents even family visits to neighboring countries.
As a result, the Iranians quickly approached neighboring countries and asked them to restore civilian flights. So far, according to the official, only Iraq has agreed, while there are currently no flights with Azerbaijan.
Israel prepares for risk of escalation
Israeli defense officials assess that Tehran is considering how to respond to the situation, what tools remain available to it, and what form its response should take. As evidence, they point to Iranian efforts to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz that have so far failed.
The defense establishment believes Iran's range of options has narrowed significantly because of the naval blockade. This comes alongside Iranian attempts to carry out attacks abroad that have also failed, according to the assessment.
Israeli defense officials further assess that unless Iran attempts to break the blockade through a deliberate military move or reaches understandings with the US, it will be forced to contend with worsening domestic problems caused by the sanctions.
The IDF is therefore preparing for the possibility that an Iranian initiative could spiral out of control, such as a cruise missile striking a US vessel and causing fatalities, creating a situation in which it would be unclear how Washington would respond.
Israeli defense officials also assess that if the Iranians conclude that they are about to come under attack, or that the regime is losing ground in its confrontation with the US, they could potentially launch attacks against US assets in Jordan or Israel.
A senior official said the Iranians understand very well what the price of such a move would be, and that this is why they have not attacked Israel.

DUBAI, Oct 4 (Reuters) - Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad has resigned and Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the government-owned National Iranian Oil Company, will be in charge of the ministry as acting minister, state media said on Sunday, without providing a reason for the resignation.
Mohsen Paknejad has been the oil minister of the OPEC member country since August 2024 and resigns as the seven-month war between Iran and the US puts pressure on the country's economy.
"With acceptance of Mohsen Paknejad's resignation by Dr. Pezeshkian [the country's president], Hamid Bovard has been appointed as acting oil minister", state media cited an official at the president's office as saying.
Paknejad was cited by state media, ahead of the news of his resignation, as saying "revenues of the oil that we have sold are still coming and that will continue God willing".

US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Iran is “ready to fold up" and again predicted that the war with Tehran could end shortly after the November midterm elections.
Speaking at an event in Denton, Texas, Trump said, “We have a war going on with a country that will never have a nuclear weapon and is ready to fold up. We'll win very easily right now. I believe right after the election we'll win, but maybe before the election."
“Nobody wants to be president [of Iran]," Trump continued. “We have intercepts where it says, 'Who wants to be president? No, I don't want to be president'. Because their presidents aren't with us any longer, but we're trying to be nice to the current person. We've got to deal with somebody at some point, right?"
Trump also said Iran had been “three to four weeks away, maybe sooner" from obtaining a nuclear weapon when the war began at the end of February. “And if they have a nuclear weapon, the whole game is over. We can't let them have."
He said the conflict would end “one way or the other...either they'll do something very proper and smart or they won't be around very long, which is, you know, frankly, I hate to see that, but they won't be around very long."
Trump made similar remarks Wednesday, saying the US was nearing a decision on its next steps toward Iran and indicating that Washington could either carry out additional strikes or reach an agreement with Tehran.

Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei sharply criticized US President Donald Trump on Friday as the American leader considers whether to resume strikes against Iran, accusing him of repeatedly declaring victories that do not exist.
In a social media post apparently directed at Trump, Rezaei described him as “the worst president in American history" and said his rhetoric had “outrun his own fantasies."
“You can win every day in your own imagination. But reality is shaped by Iran - by its people, its soldiers, and its missiles," he wrote.
Rezaei’s comments came after Trump said Thursday that Iran is “ready to fold up" and again predicted that the conflict could conclude shortly after the November midterm elections.

9,000 More US Troops Head To Middle East As Trump Mulls Resuming Iran Strikes!-Posted on The Daily Caller-By Jillian Butler, National Defense Reporter-On October 2, 2026:
While President Donald Trump contemplates further strikes, America is deploying seven more warships to the Middle East, with the fleet carrying approximately 9,000 more troops.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt and three accompanying destroyers left their port in San Diego early this week and they are expected to reach the Middle East at the end of November, The Financial Times reported. It remains unclear whether the USS Theodore Roosevelt will join the USS George Washington and USS George HW Bush in the region or replace them.
Additionally, the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), consisting of an amphibious warship and two docking ships, is traveling to the region, according to the outlet. The ARG also carries the 13th Marine Expidentiary Unit.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) declined to comment to the Daily Caller News Foundation. (RELATED: Iran’s IRGC Addresses The American People In Unprecedented Open Letter)
Altogether, the ships carry around 9,000 troops. Carrier strike groups have approximately 5,000 troops, with dozens of aircraft aboard the carrier, The Financial Times reported. ARGs have about 4,200 sailors and Marines aboard.
On Thursday, Trump told TIME Magazine that it was “possible” he would resume strikes after the midterm elections if an adequate deal with Tehran was not met. The U.S. has not officially announced strikes on Iran or Iranian vessels in nearly a month. As midterms approach and Republicans fight to maintain control of the Legislative Branch, the war in Iran remains an unpopular issue.
Throughout the conflict, America has kept approximately 20 warships in the region, The Financial Times reported. The Navy has maintained a blockade of Iranian ports while helping tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. After the Iraqi withdrawal, there are now approximately 50,000 troops in the region.

Loud blasts were reported Thursday night in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital held by the Iran-backed Houthi movement, according to AFP.
The rebel-affiliated Saba news agency accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out what it described on social media as “Saudi aggression."
The reports followed an announcement by the Saudi-led coalition that it had intercepted and destroyed four drones launched by the Houthis toward Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia, along with two ballistic missiles targeting Khamis Mushait and Jazan.
Yemen returned to fighting in July after several years of relative calm, with the Houthis battling the Riyadh-backed government.

Senate secures vote on Trump’s Saudi nuclear deal. US senators secure a vote on Trump’s proposed Saudi nuclear pact, with concerns over uranium enrichment and its potential impact on regional proliferation!-Posted on Israel National News-On October 3, 2026:
US senators concerned about nuclear proliferation said Friday that they have secured a Senate vote on President Donald Trump’s proposed nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, with the vote expected before December 13, Reuters reported.
The agreement, known as a 123 Agreement, was announced in July, submitted by Trump to Congress in late August and entered the Senate record on September 14. Lawmakers have 90 days from that date to review the pact and potentially introduce a resolution of disapproval.
“The Senate will now have a chance to fulfill its statutory responsibility to study and weigh in on the impact this agreement could have in driving a nuclear arms race in the Middle East and potentially undermining nuclear nonproliferation efforts around the world," Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley said. Merkley said he worked with Republican senators to secure the vote alongside Democrats Tim Kaine, Ed Markey, Chris Coons and Chris Van Hollen.
Critics of the agreement, including some Democratic lawmakers and nuclear nonproliferation advocates, have raised concerns that it does not prevent Saudi Arabia from enriching uranium or reprocessing nuclear waste, both of which can provide pathways toward developing nuclear weapons. The Trump administration maintains that the agreement contains the nonproliferation safeguards required under US law.
A bipartisan group of senators previously urged the administration to declassify information concerning the proposed civilian nuclear agreement, including two classified “side letters" negotiated with Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has said Riyadh does not seek nuclear weapons, but has also said Saudi Arabia would develop them if Iran obtains such weapons.
The agreement has also drawn scrutiny over whether Saudi Arabia must normalize relations with Israel for the nuclear pact to take effect. Trump has said normalization is a condition, but congressional aides have said the agreement itself contains no provision addressing the issue.

“I just say that in order to do it, they have to be a member of the Abraham Accords, which have been very successful. But it's time now that they do it," Trump told reporters two days after the agreement was signed.
The Abraham Accords were negotiated during Trump’s first administration and resulted in Israel establishing diplomatic relations with several Arab countries. Saudi Arabia and Israel had also been pursuing a potential normalization agreement before Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, after which Riyadh suspended the US-backed process.

On Wednesday, a FlyDubai aircraft en route to Tel Aviv was nearly hijacked by a religious extremist. He stabbed the captain, who managed to open the cockpit door, allowing the crew and other passengers to regain control of the plane. Reserve pilots on board made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia before transferring all passengers safely to their destination.
There were red flags with the would-be hijacker, who has been identified as Omani Hamam al-Hammami, including refusing to shake hands with women. The terrorist was later revealed to have been banned from flying due to his religious extremism. Furthermore, Oman does not share diplomatic relations with Israel, a prerequisite to land in the Jewish State. How was he able to get on that plane (via WSJ):

“The FlyDubai co-pilot who stabbed his captain and sent Flight 1073 diving toward the ground had previously been banned from flying by Oman over concerns he had adopted radical ideological views, people familiar with the matter said.
Despite the ban, the pilot was hired by FlyDubai, the people said, allowing him to fly on the sensitive route connecting the United Arab Emirates and Israel. The alleged attacker is an Omani national named Hamam al-Hammami, said other people briefed on the investigation.

The U.A.E. is leading the investigation into the incident. A U.A.E. spokesperson declined to comment on the attacker’s history in Oman “to avoid prejudging the outcome of the investigation or interfering with its course.”
FlyDubai and Oman’s government didn’t respond to requests for comment.
A senior adviser to the U.A.E.’s ruler and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Wednesday’s near-downing of FlyDubai Flight 1073 as terrorism on Friday.

Aviation-security analysts said the incident represented a significant security failure. While a screening error might have let a weapon through, a motivated assailant should have been detected and caught long before reaching the airport, they said.
Netanyahu said the picture of what happened on the flight is becoming clearer. The prime minister said he was Omani, but other details of his identity remain unclear.
The prime minister said Israel was investigating whether the pilot was working alone or had worked with others.”
All flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv have been suspended. All pilots undergo security checks before flying. They also conduct annual mental health checks.
