First round of U.S.-Iran talks in Switzerland postponed!-Posted on The Washington Times-By Vaughn Cockayne, The Washington Times-On June 19, 2026:

Swiss officials on Friday announced that the first round of negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, scheduled to be held at the mountaintop resort of Bürgenstock, had been postponed until further notice. 

The Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Switzerland is still ready to facilitate negotiations between the two nations, adding that “preparatory work” for the talks continues. 

However, Swiss officials provided no details about why the talks were called off or when they may be rescheduled. 

The U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, signed electronically on Wednesday, provides a 60-day ceasefire window during which time both sides are directed to sit down for in-depth negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, its support for proxies and sanctions relief. 

Vice President J.D. Vance was scheduled to fly to the Bürgenstock Resort on Friday for what was originally a signing ceremony for the agreement. But Mr. Vance abruptly canceled the trip late Thursday evening. 

A White House spokesperson cited logistical issues as the primary reason the talks were called off.

“As the Vice President said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement. “But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. As of now the Vice President is not departing tonight.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday that the meeting had been postponed, adding that the electronic signing on Wednesday had lessened the urgency of the meeting. 

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the U.S. and Iran are still talking through mediators and that negotiations will continue once the conditions of the memorandum of understanding are met. 

The delay comes after Israel launched airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Friday, killing at least more than 40 people and adding pressure to the U.S.-Iran agreement.  

Iran has insisted for weeks that Israel’s continued airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon violate the agreement, which calls for a ceasefire on all fronts of the war. 

Israeli officials in recent days have openly refused to withdraw their forces from southern Lebanon, where they maintain a wide “security zone.”

Talks between Iran and the United States went up in smoke Friday after Israel slammed Hezbollah targets in the aftermath of an attack that killed four Israeli soldiers.

A ceasefire brokered by the U.S. and Qatar was said to take effect Friday, according to The Times of Israel.

However, it was unclear when talks between the U.S. and Iran would take place.

Switzerland’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that planned talks would not take place, according to Politico.

Vice President J.D. Vance, who had been planning to make the trip, canceled his plans, according to Reuters.

“The logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable,” a White House representative said.

Iran has demanded that Israel cease its attacks on Hezbollah, its Lebanon-based terror proxy, as a condition of its peace deal with the United States.

However, on Thursday, a Hezbollah IED exploded, killing four Israeli soldiers and wounding five more, according to NBC News.

Israel responded with attacks that left what Lebanese officials said were 18 people dead.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he called for an attack “with force” after the “blatant violation” of a previous ceasefire.

The Israeli Defense Forces attacked “more than 80 terror targets and eliminated dozens of terrorists,” Netanyahu said.

“As I have made clear unequivocally, including yesterday: Israel will remain in the security zone in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to protect the northern communities,” he added.

Iran has said it will not move forward with the peace framework it agreed to if Hezbollah is attacked.

Iranian and Israeli officials traded bellicose statements, as noted by CNN.

Israel National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said “all of Lebanon should burn” after the Hezbollah attack.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi fired back, saying, “This is not a rant by a random genocidal lunatic. It’s a public post by the national security minister of the Israeli regime.

President Trump has a message for Americans regarding the memorandum of understanding with Iran: let's "play it out." 

In a series of posts on Truth Social, the president sought to remind Americans of the extensive damage inflicted on what he called the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism. Trump said it was the Iranian regime, not the United States, that came to the negotiating table out of desperation. 

He went on to argue that Americans should allow the next 60 days of detailed and technical negotiations to unfold to determine whether Iran is genuinely willing to negotiate in good faith. After all, if Tehran chooses to play too many games, the president has said he has no hesitation in resuming military operations against the country.

"The War has diminished Iran!" the president wrote on Truth Social. "It doesn’t, any longer, have an Air Force, a Navy, Antiaircraft Equipment, Radar, or practically anything else, and yet the Dumocrats say that Iran is better off now than it was four months ago. Can you imagine getting away with that??? How stupid can some people be??? President DJT."

"We didn’t meet out of desperation, Iran did," Trump added in a separate post. "They are FINISHED! We’ll play out the 60 days. They get no money, not ten cents!"

This comes as controversy and speculation have surrounded the Trump administration's Iran deal. Critics have pointed to provisions they claim would provide Iran with a $300 billion reconstruction fund, interfere with Israel's ability to defend itself, or allow Tehran to immediately resume oil exports. 

The administration has pushed back on those concerns, arguing that Iran will not receive significant benefits without first engaging in a lengthy process of concessions and negotiations with the United States. Officials have been particularly forceful in addressing claims about the $300 billion reconstruction fund, insisting that any such funding would not come from American taxpayers and would be contingent on Iran meeting a series of obligations.

The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for the global oil supply in the region.

The Iranian Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters via IRGC state television.

“It is hereby announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic; It is noted that this first step is a response to the enemy’s breach of promise, and if the aggression continues, further steps will be planned and taken to force the enemy to comply with its obligations,” the announcement said.

Iran blamed its move on Israel’s military action in Lebanon. On Thursday, four IDF soldiers were killed overnight in a Hezbollah attack in southern Lebanon, per The Times of Israel.

Hezbollah is a terror group backed by the IRGC.

Israel retaliated with a series of missile strikes on over 80 targets. At least 18 were killed and 33 wounded.

Iran has continued to insist that the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran may be voided if Israel continues to operate in the region.

However, the nation has made no public effort to pressure its own terror proxy in the region, Hezbollah, to discontinue its own attacks.

Understanding Trump’s Iran Memorandum. President Trump’s administration has unveiled the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran, and there are both pros and glaring cons!-Posted on The Patriot Post-By Nate Jackson-On June 18, 2026:

President Donald Trump has been teasing a deal with Iran since the middle of March, just a couple of weeks after the initial operations were launched. By early April, he announced a ceasefire that, as the weeks progressed, didn’t have much “cease” to it. Well, here we are, with the 14 points (transcribed below from a Trump administration official’s reading) of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to keep working toward a final deal. This isn’t the actual deal.

It doesn’t seem like we’ve achieved much, and I can’t say I’m full of confidence yet.

There are a couple of huge reasons for that. Namely, two of the 14 points outline how the U.S. will make money available now in exchange for promises of future actions. “Trust, but verify,” Ronald Reagan famously said. Memo to the Trump administration.

The U.S. “undertakes with regional partners to develop a definitive, mutually agreed plan with at least USD $300 billion for the reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” reads point six. Point 11 adds a promise “to make fully available for use the frozen or restricted funds and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran … during the negotiations” [emphasis added]. That frees up roughly $24 billion.

Meanwhile, point nine says, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program, and the United States of America will not impose any new sanctions and will not deploy additional forces in the region.” The MOU concedes that Iran still has “nuclear needs,” and the only reference to enriched uranium is “down-blending on-site under the supervision of the IAEA.” That comes pretty much straight from Barack Obama’s 2015 Iran deal, orchestrated by Traitor John Kerry — the one Trump ditched in his first term.

So, after blowing Iran’s military to smithereens in the first 40 days or so of combat operations, we’re going to … give the radical Islamic and apocalyptic mullahs of Tehran a bunch of money and allow their (Peaceful!™) nuclear program to continue, essentially in exchange for a promise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. And even that language implies that Iran may be permitted to exact tolls from passing ships.

Obama’s presidential library is opening tomorrow, but I didn’t realize he was still delivering pallets of cash to the Iranians.

Okay, that’s overly harsh, to make a point. However, as our Mark Alexander cautions, “Trump knows the only way to herd these squirrels is through incremental steps. The optics are bad, but I think the process is not as bleak as the MSM and some conservatives make it out to be.”

If things don’t work out, Trump threatened that the bomb-dropping will continue until morale improves.

“We’re gonna bomb the hell out of them if they violate the agreement,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “If it doesn’t get done in 60 days, that’s all right. We go back to bombing,” he added. “I don’t want to do that because [the MOU is] so good, but we might have to because we’re never going to let them have a nuclear weapon.”

Historian Victor Davis Hanson argues, “If we’re willing to … hit them hard every time they break it, then it might eventually work.”

We’ll see. President Trump already “bombed the hell out of them” last year in Operation Midnight Hammer, and again this year in Operation Epic Fury. The second operation was necessary because the first wasn’t as successful as Trump’s boasts suggested. Somehow, the regime stood the test and doesn’t appear to have conceded a whole lot.

The Iranians’ ballistic missile and drone stockpiles were conspicuously absent from the MOU. “We knocked out probably 84, 85% of their missiles,” argued President Trump. Besides, he added, “Missiles aren’t the problem. Missiles, they hurt a little location, but they don’t blow up the planet.” Well, missiles, drones, and mines are how the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has effectively held the Strait of Hormuz hostage. Missiles, as Trump himself noted in 2018, “could deliver nuclear warheads.” That seems like a problem to me.

Neither does the MOU contain any provision for Iran’s support and direction of proxy terrorists in the region. The only mention of it is in point one, which specifies “the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t seem to be on board with leaving Hezbollah alone because Hezbollah will never leave Israel in peace. “Just the other day,” notes Ben Shapiro, “Hezbollah literally attacked northern Israel. Israel then went after Dahiya, which is where Hezbollah’s leadership lives. And President Trump called up the prime minister of Israel and yelled at him.”

As for the people of Iran, Trump promised early on that “help is on the way” should they choose to topple the regime in Tehran. Tens of thousands of slaughtered Iranians later, we haven’t heard much about any public uprising or effort at regime change in Iran. Perhaps that was never realistic, given the brutality of the Islamofascists in charge, but we shouldn’t forget the Iranian people.

Strategically, this deal is, as most things in life, full of tradeoffs. There are rarely silver bullets that solve every problem, as much as we’d like there to be. Trump is playing a long game, calculating that he has so critically handicapped Iran militarily that the mullahs understand the danger. He’s also playing a much shorter game, realizing that high gas prices and rising inflation are going to kill his party in the midterms — and thus for the remainder of his term — if he doesn’t do something fast.

Given that he refused to go to Congress, has weathered numerous rebukes by resolution, and didn’t fully make a case to the American people before launching operations, he knows he’s got a short leash.

Vice President JD Vance is dutifully making the case for Trump’s MOU. He explained, “What the agreement does is fundamentally set up a structure whereby if the Iranians behave like a normal country, then we want to treat them like a normal country and welcome them to the world economy.”

For the last half century, the radical Islamists in charge of Iran have repeatedly said loud and clear that they don’t want to “behave like a normal country.” They want to bring about the demise of the “Great Satan” and the apocalypse itself because of their deluded theology. This war and deal are, at best, a setback for them, and Trump is merely the latest in a long line of U.S. presidents to discover just how difficult Iran can be.

Right now, there remain more questions than answers. But on the bright side, the U.S. has killed Iran’s ayatollah and much of its leadership, destroyed most of Iran’s military capabilities, and no matter its desires, it will take a long time to rebuild.

Here is the text of the MOU’s 14 points:

1.) The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran and their allies in the current war, by signing this MOU, declare the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and undertake from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other, and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other, and ensuring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon. The final deal will confirm the permanent termination of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and other provisions of this paragraph.

2.) The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran undertake to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to refrain from interfering in each other’s internal affairs.

3.) The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran commit to negotiating and achieving the final deal in maximum 60 days, extendable with mutual consent.

4.) Immediately upon the signing of this MOU, the United States of America will begin the removal of its naval blockade and any disturbances or impediments against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and will fully end the naval blockade within 30 days. During this period, the traffic of vessels will be in proportion to the numbers of pre-war traffic being restored by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The United States of America further undertakes to remove its forces from the proximity of the Islamic Republic of Iran within 30 days after the final deal.

5.) Upon the signing of this MOU, the Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days only from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman, and vice versa. The traffic of commercial vessels will immediately start, and considering the need for removing the technical and military obstacles and demining by the Islamic Republic of Iran will be instated within 30 days. The Islamic Republic of Iran will conduct dialogue with the Sultanate of Oman to define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz, in discussion with other Persian Gulf or littoral states, in line with the applicable international law and the sovereign rights of coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz.

6.) The United States of America undertakes with regional partners to develop a definitive, mutually agreed plan with at least USD $300 billion for the reconstruction and economic development of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The mechanism for the implementation of this plan will be finalized as part of a final deal within 60 days. All required licenses, waivers, and permissions needed for the relevant financial transactions will be granted by the United States of America.

7.) The United States of America undertakes to terminate all types of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the United Nations Security Council resolutions, IAEA Board of Governors resolutions, and all unilateral U.S. sanctions, primary and secondary, in an agreed-upon schedule as part of the final deal. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America acknowledge the critical importance of the sanctions termination issue above mentioned, and expressed their intentions to immediately address these issues in the negotiations in order to achieve mutual agreement on them.

8.) The Islamic Republic of Iran reaffirms that it shall not procure or develop nuclear weapons. The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran have agreed to resolve the disposition of stockpile enriched material pursuant to a mechanism that will be mutually agreed upon in accordance with the schedule mentioned in paragraph seven, with the minimum methodology to be down-blending on-site under the supervision of the IAEA. The two parties also agreed to discuss the issue of enrichment and other mutually agreed matters related to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear needs, based on a satisfactory framework being agreed upon in the final deal. The final deal will confirm the provisions of this paragraph. The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran acknowledge the critical importance of the nuclear issues above mentioned and express their intention to immediately address these issues in the negotiations in order to achieve mutual agreement on them.

9.) Pending the final deal, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran agree to maintain the status quo. The Islamic Republic of Iran will maintain the current status quo of its nuclear program, and the United States of America will not impose any new sanctions and will not deploy additional forces in the region.

10.) The United States of America undertakes that immediately upon the signing of this MOU until the termination of sanctions, the U.S. Department of Treasury will issue waivers for the export of Iranian crude oil, petroleum products, and derivatives, and all associated services, including banking transactions, insurances, transportation, etc.

11.) The United States of America undertakes to make fully available for use the frozen or restricted funds and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Upon the implementation of this MOU, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will mutually agree on the procedures related to the release of these funds during the negotiations. Such funds, whether retained in the original account or transferred, shall be made fully usable for payment to any ultimate beneficiary designed by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The United States of America undertakes to issue all necessary licenses and authorizations accordingly.

12.) The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran agree that an executive mechanism will be established to monitor the successful implementation of this MOU and the future compliance of the final deal.

13.) After signing this MOU, and subject to the beginning of the implementation of paragraphs 1, 4, 5, 10, and 11 of the MOU, and the continuing implementation of these measures, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will start negotiations regarding the final deal exclusively on the other paragraphs.

14.) The final deal will be endorsed by a binding UNSC resolution.

Victor Davis Hanson, a military historian and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, said the biggest test of the Iran deal will be how the United States enforces it, as the full text of the memorandum of understanding was finally released Wednesday.

Hanson said he's not entirely worried about the core issues, like issues surrounding the enriched uranium or opening the Strait of Hormuz. He explained that Iran needs the Strait open nearly as much as the rest of the world due to the economic pressures currently on the country, and U.S. intelligence can track enriched uranium so precisely that if Iran moves toward building a nuclear weapon, the U.S. can immediately resume a bombing campaign.

However, the very real threat of those attacks, or other serious U.S. action against Iran, will determine how closely Iran complies with the rest of the agreement and broader American interests.

"So the two chief issues I'm not so worried about," Hanson said. "I think we know where the enriched uranium is, it's sealed, we have great intelligence, we can bomb it, bomb it, bomb it, we can hit more of their industrial complexes if they cheat, and they will open the Strait of Hormuz because they're just about broke."

"The other things are known unknowns. It's going to be more difficult to ensure they're not giving money to Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Hamas. That's more murky, and we don't know what they're going to do in Lebanon. And then, of course, we don't know what's going on in Iran, because this is the first real air war," he continued. "We don't have boots on the ground, we don't have embeds, but we will learn very shortly, and we're going to get an idea of just how much damage was done. I think it might have been half a trillion dollars or more in the nuclear military-industrial complex."

“We don't know the mood of the people. Are they going to come out and say to their own government, you mean we lost everything we had, and now you could have done this peacefully? Instead, you acted so tough, you were humiliated, and now we're broke and destitute, and all you had to do was agree in the first place. And then we don't know how the government will react to that. There could be a widespread uprising. We don't know what we're going to do if they try to kill another 40,000 people.”

"So the main denominator, though, that has to be ironclad is we have to react disproportionately any time they break the agreement," Hanson added.

This comes as concerns have been raised about the memorandum, which essentially serves as an extended 60-day ceasefire to allow negotiating parties to work out the technical details of a more lasting peace deal. The concerns primarily center on the fact that those technical details remain unworked, including how the United States will ensure Iran abandons its nuclear weapons pursuit, how it will prevent Iran from funding its terror proxies in the region, and how the agreement will serve as more than empty commitments by the Iranians.

The Trump administration has maintained that enforcement will hinge on financial incentives: a $300 billion reconstruction fund, an upfront arrangement allowing Iran to immediately begin selling its oil, and U.S. vows to free up sanctioned money and assets upon Iran's compliance. President Trump also said Wednesday he has no problem resuming military strikes if Iran begins to play games.

President Trump said Tuesday that second-stage talks over Iran’s nuclear program will unfold rapidly after a preliminary deal is signed Friday and that “all hell will rain down” if Tehran violates its commitments.

Mr. Trump, traveling in France for the Group of Seven summit, said he would release the text of the first-stage deal soon and took pains to clear up misunderstandings.

He said Iran would not receive U.S. funding or investments and the Strait of Hormuz would remain toll-free in perpetuity.

“It’s toll-free beyond the 60 days,” he said, referring to the time frame of nuclear talks. “It’s toll-free, period.”

Members of Congress and the media are itching to see the text of the memorandum of understanding, which Mr. Trump and a top Iranian official signed late Sunday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the American naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Hardly anyone has seen the deal, raising suspicions that it might not be as good as advertised, though Mr. Trump said everyone can see it at least by the planned signing Friday.

“I’ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word so that the press covers it accurately,” he said.

The preliminary deal alleviates economic pressure on both nations and sets the stage for restricting Iran’s nuclear program.

“The ships are starting to move now. We’re going to have it fully opened by Friday,” Mr. Trump said. “Oil is starting to go, and the prices are coming down rapidly.”

Iran would be allowed to immediately begin selling oil and fuel under the memorandum. Sanctions relief would take effect after the agreement is signed, The Wall Street Journal reported.

A senior U.S. official said the agreement is “performance-based,” and Iran would not receive any benefits unless it satisfies terms, “including no nuclear weapon, neutralizing its enriched material, and not interfering with the free flow of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Mr. Trump said a 60-day period of nuclear negotiations would start immediately.

“Iran wants to get it done. They have to get back to business,” he said. “I think it’s going to go pretty quickly. It could take longer, but it could go fast.”

Mr. Trump said the U.S. is capable of retrieving the “nuclear dust” — the enriched uranium buried from previous U.S. strikes — from Iran’s mountains but is in “no rush” to dig it out.

He said the Americans, and possibly the Chinese, are the only ones able to excavate the material, and it is under close surveillance.

Vice President J.D. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to attend the deal signing in Switzerland.

Critics say the agreement simply returned the U.S. to the prewar status quo, accomplishing nothing.

Still, Mr. Trump said the deal says “loud and clear” that Iran cannot develop or purchase nuclear weapons.

“If they do, all hell will rain down on them. They are not going to do that,” Mr. Trump said during a bilateral meeting with the emir of Qatar.

The U.S. and Israel launched a military operation against Iran on Feb. 28 to prevent Tehran from getting a nuclear weapon. Early strikes killed top Iranian leaders and decimated the country’s military.

Iran retaliated by restricting oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, causing energy shocks and higher gasoline prices in the U.S.

American negotiators struggled to reach a consensus with a fractured Iranian leadership, though Mr. Trump said they found a trustworthy group.

“They are not radicalized and [are] looking to help their country,” he said.

The president confirmed Tuesday that the U.S. would not pour funds into Iran as part of the preliminary agreement, even as Tehran said Washington agreed to assist in rebuilding the country.

“We are not investing any money in Iran, by the way. That rumor that got out there yesterday. It was ridiculous,” Mr. Trump said.

His comments echo those of Mr. Vance, who said other countries in the region would pick up the bill for the rumored $300 billion postwar reconstruction effort.

Specifically, Mr. Vance told CBS that countries in the Persian Gulf region would be the ones to assist Iran in rebuilding after more than three months of war with the U.S. and Israel.

“That’s the sort of things they could have access to so long as they honor their end of the obligation,” Mr. Vance said of the Iranians.

Qatar, which played a significant role in negotiating the preliminary deal between the U.S. and Iran, said it had not allocated any funds for the reconstruction effort.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari told reporters that he did not expect the region to return to “business as usual” after the war concludes and that “there is a lot of need for dialogue and for agreement over how to guarantee the security of our region.”

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said it was bizarre that no one knows what is in the plain text of the deal. He called on the administration to deliver a briefing to members of Congress, starting with the Gang of Eight, which includes leaders and senior intelligence committee lawmakers in both parties.

“I’m calling on Trump to inform the American people on whatever his understanding with Iran involves, and he should do it immediately so we all know what the heck is going on,” Mr. Schumer said on the Senate floor. “We’re in the middle of a war; no one quite understands what Trump is up to. And now, he’s keeping everyone in the dark.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican and a national security hawk, said he hopes Mr. Trump’s effort to “forever foreclose” Iran’s nuclear ambitions is successful. Further, he wants more Middle Eastern nations to normalize relations with Israel through Mr. Trump’s Abraham Accords.

“The ultimate win for taking on Iran is to open up a pathway to peace through Abraham Accord expansion and build on regional integration,” Mr. Graham said on X. “If the conflict with Iran yields this outcome, it will be one of the most successful military operations in American history.”

One of the major sticking points, beyond whether Tehran can be trusted in nuclear talks, has been Israel’s assault on Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon.

Mr. Trump broke sharply with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday by declaring Israel has been “fighting Hezbollah too long” and killing too many civilians in Lebanon.

“If Israel can’t do the job without killing everyone else, he’ll do the job,” Mr. Trump said of Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa. “Syria will do the job.”

The president said Israel has been “fighting Hezbollah too long and too many people are being killed” and criticized the tactic of striking apartment buildings.

“You don’t have to knock down an apartment house every time you’re looking for somebody,” he said, “because there are a lot of people in those apartment houses, and they’re not all Hezbollah.”

Mr. Trump said he personally urged Israel to have Syria take over the role of fighting Hezbollah.

“I suggested to Israel to let Syria take care of Hezbollah because, to be honest with you, I think they’d do a better job of doing it,” he said.

The president said he was unhappy with an Israeli attack on Beirut that occurred as he was negotiating the U.S. peace deal with Iran, and he let that be known to Mr. Netanyahu.

Mr. Trump said his relationship with Mr. Netanyahu is “unbelievable,” but added, “Bibi has to be more responsible with respect to Lebanon.”

Israel signaled Monday that it had no intention of stopping combat operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, despite the U.S.-Iran deal promising a ceasefire on all fronts.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz wrote in a statement that he and Mr. Netanyahu were opposed to withdrawing Israeli forces from Lebanon.

“Holding territory and maintaining security zones are among the IDF’s greatest achievements in the War of Revival, under the decisions and guidance of the political leadership,” Mr. Katz wrote, referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

“Therefore, we oppose an IDF withdrawal from Lebanon, despite all existing pressures and those that may still come.”

Mr. Katz said Mr. Netanyahu made his position on withdrawal clear to Mr. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in conversations Sunday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tuesday that continued Israeli attacks or occupation in Lebanon would constitute a violation of the deal.

In remarks before diplomats stationed in Tehran, Mr. Araghchi said that, from the beginning, Iran has considered a full ceasefire in Lebanon to be a prerequisite for ending the war. He warned that none of the deal’s provisions would be realized if Israel continues to attack Hezbollah.

President Trump drew a stark line Tuesday between his Iran nuclear agreement and his predecessor’s, calling former President Barack Obama’s 2015 deal “a road to a nuclear weapon” and insisting his own agreement leaves no such opening, warning Iran that any attempt to develop, buy or acquire a nuclear weapon will bring catastrophic retaliation.

“This deal is a wall to a nuclear weapon. [Mr. Obama’s] deal was a road to a nuclear weapon. My deal — they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the G7 summit in Evian, France.

“They’ll get blown up if they have a nuclear weapon. … In his deal, they were allowed to have a nuclear weapon.”

Mr. Trump also noted that the U.S. paid the Iranian regime “nothing,” while the Obama administration “paid them billions of dollars, and it was a disaster.”

The new agreement, brokered with Qatar’s mediation, contains no such expiration window, according to the president, and pairs its prohibitions with the implicit threat of military force demonstrated by last year’s B-2 bomber strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Mr. Trump told reporters he pushed for stronger language in the deal, saying the Iranians “originally wrote that ’We will not develop a nuclear weapon.’ I said, ’No, no, you’re not going to develop it. You’re not going to buy either.’ That took another couple of days of time.”

Mr. Obama was among several Democrats who criticized Mr. Trump’s planned peace deal with Iran, telling ABC News last weekend it was “doubtful” any agreement would significantly improve on his 2015 nuclear pact with Iran.

“It is doubtful that any agreement that arises is going to be significantly different, or a significant improvement from the deal that we had in the first place,” Mr. Obama told the news organization, adding that the agreement “worked for a long stretch of time”

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, reached 11 years ago between Iran and world powers, including the U.S., traded sanctions relief for limits on Tehran’s nuclear program — capping uranium enrichment, shrinking its stockpile and opening its facilities to expanded international inspections.

But the agreement came with an expiration date. Sunset clauses would have let Iran resume full-scale enrichment by the mid-2030s, a timeline critics warned was a delay, not a permanent fix.

President Trump said Wednesday a pending deal with Iran will bring peace, forestall Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and avoid the “economic catastrophe” that would have unfolded if bombs kept falling in perpetuity.

Mr. Trump rattled off potential benefits as the world got its first glimpse at leaked versions of the first-stage deal that ends hostilities in the Middle East and gives both sides 60 days to make a final deal.

The president said he achieved “everything, and much more” in the memorandum of understanding, and that it could be signed as soon as Thursday — ahead of a planned Friday signing.

Mr. Trump said he was impressed by the Iranian leaders who negotiated the deal.

“Actually, I think they’re smart. I think they’re very smart. I think they’re far less radicalized,” he said at a concluding press conference at the Group of Seven summit in France. “I think they’re going to behave much differently.”

Mr. Trump pointed to rising stocks on Wall Street in the wake of the tentative peace settlement, which lifts a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and reopens the Strait of Hormuz over a 30-day period.

The administration announced the deal on Sunday after months of fighting in the Middle East.

Various media outlets published leaked versions of the memorandum of understanding.

The White House has not released the official version, with Vice President J.D. Vance suggesting Middle East partners, such as Qatar and Pakistan, requested a delay before the Friday signing.

Mr. Trump said he expects both sides to reach a positive deal in the second phase of negotiations.

He also said the first-stage deal could change, but he’s ready to resume bombing if the agreement falls apart.

“I think it’ll be done. They want to sign,” Mr. Trump said. “They want to get back to a normal life.”

A version of the deal says the war must end “on all fronts,” including Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists.

“I want Israel to be able to protect itself,” Mr. Trump said. “But I do want them to use good judgment.”

Senate rejects another Democrat-led effort to end Iran war despite peace deal!-Posted on The Washington Times-By Lindsey McPherson, The Washington Times-On June 16, 2026:

Senate Democrats, not confident that President Trump’s first-stage peace deal with Iran will hold, are continuing their push for Congress to formally end the war.

But they remain one Republican supporter shy of the 51 votes needed to pass a war powers resolution terminating hostilities with Iran.

“Trump’s Iran war blunder can’t end soon enough,” said Senate Democratic Leader Charles E. Schumer of New York. “We’ve been told dozens of times that this war is over – dozens of times that proved to be a lie.”

Senate Democrats’ ninth attempt to advance a war powers resolution failed in a 47-48 vote on Tuesday.

Four Republicans – Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Rand Paul – voted with most Democrats in support.

Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania remains the only Democrat voting in opposition.

“While no one has seen this agreement – and there is still some doubt that it will even actually materialize – it appears at the foundation to be a payment to Iran to open the strait,” Sen. Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrat, said, noting that giving Iran significant sanctions relief now removes the leverage needed to get them to negotiate on an end to their nuclear program.

With full Senate attendance, Tuesday’s vote would have been a 50-50 tie. Three Democratic supporters and two Republican opponents were absent.

Vice President J.D. Vance, a key broker in the peace talks with Iran, would have sided with Republicans in breaking the tie, so Democrats need to flip one more Republican if they hope to pass the war powers resolution.

A previous war powers resolution advanced because of GOP opponents who were absent. Democrats are preserving that resolution in case they can flip one more Republican needed to pass it.

Two weeks ago, House Democrats successfully passed an Iran war powers resolution in their chamber with the help of four Republicans.

Even if the war powers resolution were to pass the Senate, Mr. Trump would certainly veto it and neither chamber could muster up the two-thirds majority needed to override that.

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. and Iran agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to bring the months-long war to an end. The formal signing is planned to take place at a meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday.

The MOU is not a final, negotiated “peace deal.” But it is the first important hurdle in a longer process that could potentially end the costly war that began Feb. 28. Trump said he might send the MOU to Congress for review and that he’d read it aloud at a press conference once it is released to the public.

The details surrounding the MOU are scant. But the basic gist is that, barring a total breakdown, the MOU ends hostilities on all fronts (including Lebanon) and begins a 60-day period in which both parties can negotiate thornier issues: Iran’s nuclear program and uranium enrichment capabilities, the long-term arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz and whether Iran will keep its fee system permanently in place, and sanctions relief. An Iranian news outlet published a 14-point proposal purported to be the actual MOU, “electronically signed” by Trump and Vice President JD Vance. What’s more clear, however, are the factions who want to derail the peace process, continue the war, or else want the opposing side to get nothing out of any future deal and thus make peace all but impossible: the Israelis, the Iran Hawks and Israel Firsters, and hardliners in the Iranian regime.

The Israelis

The Israelis have made it known since Sunday that they have no intention of ending their occupation of Lebanon, even though it would appear that this is a crucial part of the MOU. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said in a statement that “under the agreements reached, the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, are ended immediately and permanently.” Trump’s stinging and very public criticism of Israel and the IDF at the G7 summit on Tuesday also suggests that Lebanon is key to any future deal. Yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is digging in, insisting Israeli troops will continue to occupy Lebanon “for as long as necessary.”

“We established deep security zones around the state of Israel. We did this in Gaza, in Lebanon and in Syria,” he said at a press conference Monday. “And I want to make it clear: we will remain in these security zones … to protect our country.”

Other members of his right-wing coalition have indicated Israel will spoil the progress in the coming days or weeks. Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday that the Israel Defense Forces will remain in Southern Lebanon and promised that Israel will “resist any pressure” to end the war. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the MOU was “bad for Israel and for the entire free world. Period.” National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir also attacked the deal and said: “Trump’s agreement does not bind us.”

“Israel is not subordinate to the United States. We are an independent and sovereign country,” Gvir said. “We are not partners to this agreement, which does not safeguard our security. We must not withdraw from any territory [in Lebanon] that our fighters have captured.”

The Iran Hawks and Israel Firsters

Prominent neocons, Iran Hawks and pro-Israel voices on the right have come out of the woodwork in recent days, knives unsheathed, in a desperate attempt to pressure the Trump administration out of the peace process and return to full-scale war.

Marc Thiessen, a Fox News contributor and Washington Post columnist who has praised Trump at every turn since Feb. 28, referred to a leaked 14-point proposal as a “complete disaster” if true. Rather than directly criticizing the president, he framed the MOU as the “Vance peace deal,” even though Trump signed off on it. Meanwhile, Fox News host Mark Levin was furious that Israel got left out of the negotiating process.

A slew of others, including Foundation for Defense of Democracies CEO Mark Dubowitz, several Fox News contributors, Ben Shapiro and radio host Erick Erickson, have slammed the MOU and likened it to former President Barack Obama’s 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

This faction’s main goal is to pressure the administration as much as possible so that Trump fully backs out of the MOU, asks Iran to make concessions that would be a virtual nonstarter in future negotiations, or restarts the war.

The Iranian Hardliners

Al Jazeera reported Tuesday that hardliners in the Iranian regime have “shown their anger at the prospect of signing a deal with US President Donald Trump.” This faction believes Trump is the key culprit behind the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and General Qassem Soleimani, according to the outlet.

The hardliners reportedly do not want the regime to make any major concessions to the U.S., want full and permanent control over the Strait of Hormuz, and want U.S. troops to leave the region entirely. Some of these hardliners are associated with the political group Paydari Front, led by Saeed Jalili. Jalili was a longtime representative of Khamenei on Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Al Jazeera reported. He is believed to be the main opponent to a deal.

On the other hand, moderates and centrists, who include Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have pushed for a negotiated settlement that still secures Iran’s interests, Al Jazeera reported. Surviving members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are also said to be playing a role behind the scenes in shaping negotiations, according to Al Jazeera.

Trita Parsi, an Iran expert and the vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, believes there is an Iranian hardliner faction currently attempting to poison the well before future negotiations even take place. In an interview Monday, Parsi told Tucker Carlson some of the proposals and recent leaks coming from Iranian state media are, in fact, poison pills.

“There have been so many different versions that have been floating around. Some of them, frankly, do seem to be sabotage efforts,” he explained. “Some of the hardline media in Iran that has been sending out versions that I think deliberately were trying to raise people’s expectations in order to make the final deal look bad. They’re doing it to try to sabotage.”

Parsi also noted that the Paydari Front is “dead set” on opposing a deal and that the group organized protests outside the Iranian Foreign Ministry in Tehran, calling for the death of Abbas Araghchi and others who were negotiating with the U.S.
